New 2012.2 Release

PhotoModeler and PhotoModeler Scanner have been updated to version 2012.2. The new version is available as a download patch or from within PhotoModeler using the Check for Updates function. There are 42 fixes and improvements including 6 exciting new features.

We are calling 2012.2 the "Point Cloud / Laser Scanner Integration" release! There are two new features which make importing and using point clouds and scanner data in PhotoModeler a breeze. The first feature is the Import Geometry system which handles point mesh files directly.

These imported point meshes can be used to generate control points, multi-point transform points, or be pinned / static model objects. In addition to this functionality, the imported cloud / meshes are treated like regular PointMeshes, that is, they can be textured, re-exported, etc.

The second feature is the new Sphere Target subpixel marker. Small spheres are commonly used as 3D scanner alignment tools. PhotoModeler can mark these spheres in a photo at subpixel precision making it easy to accurately align imported point cloud data to the PhotoModeler 3D data.

With this new functionality you can scan a scene with a laser or white light scanner, import the cloud data into a PhotoModeler project of the same area, match up points in the scan to marks in the photos (manual points or sphere targets), and then use the resulting merged data as one. Study the data together in the 3D Viewer, generate textures, generate ortho-photos, or re-export in new formats.

The new 2012.2 release features do not end there! In addition, there is a new cross-section / profile tool for PointMeshes, a new flexible text and CSV file import capability, a revamped and easier to use Add / Import Geometry dialog, and fly-out visibility control panels for each 3D View window. See New Features for more detail, including a video.

Tip 19: Automatic masking of backgrounds in DSM creation

Often when creating Dense Surface Models (DSM) you need to trim out part of the image to reduce noise and improve efficiency. This trimming is done with DSM Trims - which are user-defined polygonal regions.

For a more precise and somewhat more automated trimming method, DSM Masks can be used. A DSM Mask is a pixel by pixel map of what should and should not be in the DSM extraction. DSM Masks can be created in external programs or PhotoModeler can use a chroma-key approach to extract a mask out of a constant color background (what the movie industry called blue or green screen). This video demonstrates DSM masking via chroma-key / background extraction.

Tip 18: Animation and Video Export

The 3D view of a PhotoModeler project can be animated (flyby, fly-around, etc.) and exported as a video for local study, a GIF file for use on the web, or uploaded directly to Youtube.

This tip video shows the steps and some of the options.

Tip 17: Open photos to show object relationships

To create a 3D object in PhotoModeler the object usually has to be visible on multiple photographs. The process of 'marking' and 'referencing' the object (point, edge, curve, cylinder, etc.) on more than one photograph is what determines its 3d position in space. When you are viewing a photo with an image of an object it can be very useful to ask, 'open all other photos that show a mark of this object'. The 'Open Photos Showing Selected' is the tool that carries this out.

Tip 16: Paste Table Data into Excel

A great way to analyze data from PhotoModeler is to display one of the many Table Views (such as the 3D Points Table, or the Photos Table), and export it to Excel. You can then use the power of Excel for sorting, analysis, etc. This video shows the easy steps to copy/paste from PhotoModeler to Excel.

Tip 15: Camera Frustum View

PhotoModeler's 3D Viewer is a great tool for viewing your 3D model, as well as viewing the positions of the camera(s) that took the photos. A new feature in 2012.1.1 now shows the camera view frustums as well. A frustum is the volume the camera sees, shown graphically by a 3D wireframe solid. These are useful to determine overlap and to view the relationships of the view volumes.

The Wikipedia Frustum article describes it further.

Tip 14: Curves Through Points

PhotoModeler can create b-spline curves (NURBS) in two ways. The first is by marking the curve edge in multiple photographs and referencing these curve marks. The second is fitting a curve through a set of existing 3D points. This tip demonstrates the latter technique of selecting one-by-one, or group selecting points to fit a curve through. This method is useful when you have target points on a surface or curve.

Tip 13: Video Import

This tip demonstrates a recently added feature: Video Import. Video files can now be used as a source of photogrammetric information - stills are extracted from the video and used the same way photographs from a digital still camera are. The frame extraction can be done manually, with a small embedded video player in PhotoModeler Scanner, or with SmartMatch, the frames are extracted automatically for optimal separation. This video shows an automated SmartMatch project using videos and stills combined.

Video cameras (even HD ones) do not have the high resolution of most modern DSLR cameras so accuracy will be lower, but the convenience of taking many photographs easily can be a benefit.

Tip 12: Linking 3D Views

This tip shows a recently added feature called '3D Viewer Linking'. For some time, you have been able to open multiple 3D Viewer windows and show different object types, different layers, and different rendering qualities (points, meshes, surfaced, textured) in the different windows. Now with multiple open 3D View windows you can sync their view direction so that all contents zoom, pan and rotate together. This is a great way to study a model closely while seeing different characteristics.

New 2012.1.1 Release

PhotoModeler and PhotoModeler Scanner have been updated to version 2012.1.1. The new version is available as a download patch or from within PhotoModeler using the 'Check for Updates' function.

This has been released shortly after the 2012.1.0 version because we found a serious bug that was introduced inadvertently in 2012.1.0. It was a crash during referencing of points that define scale.

There are 19 fixes and improvements in total. Three interesting improvements included in this release are: a) The ability to use an Edge or a Cylinder as an axis in a coordinate system rotation definition; b) The camera frustum (view volume) can be shown graphically in the 3D viewer; and, c) PMV can now show volume changes of a PointMesh over time in a new report.

Tip 11: Using the Object Name Field

This tip shows how to use the name field property on PhotoModeler 3D objects. Points, lines, edges, surfaces, point meshes, and cylinders all have a free-form, text-based 'name' field where the user can type extra information about that object. This name appears in tables, on photos and 3d views for some types, and with exports for some formats. It can be useful for labeling and keep tracking of objects.

4D Measurement Innovation and Special Offer

PhotoModeler Video (PMV) provides the capability of doing measurement and modeling over time : 4D = 3D (xyz) + 1D (time).

PMV was recently upgraded in the 2012.1 release with some eye-popping new capabilities. The two most exciting are the ability to run SmartMatch, and the ability to run DSM (Dense Surface Modeling) over time.

A typical PMV project has two or more synchronized cameras watching a subject that is changing shape or moving. Photographs are taken at fixed time intervals to catch the subject's changes, which can be at a fast rate or slow rate depending on the subject and your image capture equipment. With the new DSM capability in PMV you can now model surface changes over time. Watch this video for an example:

YouTube link

Here is some additional information explaining PMV on our website.

Special Offer

We are looking for customers that already perform, or are interesting in doing, 3D measurements or modeling of changing subjects. We need your input to help build on this initial PMS/PMV integration to make PMV even better and more practical. We have room for a few customers within this offer, each of whom will receive a free PMV module add-on for PM Scanner 2012.1 (if you want to participate but are on an older version of PM Scanner let us know). Please submit a description of the type of measurement or modeling you would like to do, and we will pick the first few that we think are good applications for the technology. You will have direct input and contact with the developers to get PMS/PMV working well in your application. In addition we will showcase your results within the PhotoModeler community when the project is complete. Please contact James at support@photomodeler.com with your project description and any questions you may have.

New 2012.1 Release

PhotoModeler and PhotoModeler Scanner have been updated to version 2012.1. The new version is available as a download patch or from within PhotoModeler using the Check for Updates function.

There are 51 fixes and improvements. The big new feature in PM Scanner is video import (including mpeg4), with both manual and automated image-frame extraction. In addition, a very important fix has been added that increases the accuracy and reduces the noise of DSM PointMeshes - esp. when the roll angle between the camera pair increases. Very important if you have cameras with 180 degree rolls (like in a flight line from a UAV).

Tip 10: Moving Selection between photo marks and 3D objects

This tip shows how to 'expand' selection from 2D photo marks to 3D objects, or reverse. Object Selection let's you choose objects with a mouse so they can be easily identified in 3D Views and Tables. In addition, Object Selection is used to view object properties, delete objects, and center the photo view window. The relationship between 2D marks (for points, edges, cylinders, and curves) to the 3D objects they create is a key one in PhotoModeler. The ability to easily see these relationship can be quite helpful.

PhotoModeler - what's in there?

At Eos we like to think of PhotoModeler like an onion. For many tasks you'll find the standard operations, that are front and center, are all you need. For other tasks you'll discover that PhotoModeler offers a wealth of feature-rich layers, giving you the power to efficiently and accurately handle complex 3D measurement projects.

Many of PhotoModeler's features have been added over the 20 years since it was initially introduced - most as a result of user input and an understanding of what real-world projects our customers are carrying out. We've created a new Comprehensive Feature List to help you learn about all of PhotoModeler features and benefits at a glance. We are peeling the onion for you!

Tip 4: 3D View Rotate and Zoom Point

To follow up on tip #3, that was on 3D viewer navigation, this tip demonstrates the very useful ability to change the rotation- and zoom-about point. When you want to study some part of your 3d model in more detail, the default centered zoom- and rotate-about point can be cumbersome. The 'A key' answers that. Take a look.

Tip 3: Navigation in the 3D Viewer

There are more ways to change the view (zoom, rotate, pan) in PhotoModeler`s 3D Viewer than the controls on the bottom right. There are mouse and keyboard short-cuts, you can customize (to make more like other 3d software you use), and 3Dconnexion`s 3D mouse is supported as well.

New Tips - Tip 1: Sizing Photo Thumbnails

We are instituting a new regular feature called "PhotoModeler Tips". These tips will come out every 2 to 5 weeks and will contain a short video describing one feature. The features will be those often overlooked but very useful none-the-less.

Our first tip is below. Tip #1 - Sizing Photo Thumbnails

New Articles and Search

There are some interesting new third-party articles on PhotoModeler: one is a comparison of laser scanning and photogrammetry in geology and terrain modeling, one shows an unmanned aerial vehicle capturing landslides, and one points out some interesting forensic work done by a long-time PhotoModeler customer.

In addition, all the reports and articles have been reorganized. They can now be searched by application field, product type and version number; they are sorted by date (most recent first); and most of the external publicly-available articles have a local pdf cache (for when remote site is inaccessible).

It is interesting to see the date range of these articles that shows the longevity of PhotoModeler. Our first article in the database is dated 1995 and the most recent Nov. 2011 !

Neat Examples of SmartMatch and DSM

We have a new web page that shows projects that use both SmartMatch and DSM. Currently the two projects shown are at two ends of a scale - a ceramic bunny at one end, and a 2000 foot-long coal storage area at the other. The coal storage area would be very difficult (or far more expensive) to do without the SmartMatch and DSM capabilities in PhotoModeler Scanner. Take a look!

2011.1 Major Release

New versions of PhotoModeler and PhotoModeler Scanner have just been released. The new version is 2011.1. This new version contains some significant improvements along with a number of fixes. The major improvements are:

- 64 bit versions of the programs are out of beta and now officially released. If you have a license for 32 bit PhotoModeler, a 64 bit version of Windows (Vista or 7), and often work with big projects (high resolution images or many images) then the new 64 bit versions will be significant for you.

- SmartMatch (PhotoModeler Scanner) has had a significant rewrite in a number of areas. The feature detection and matching have been sped up and are both threaded, now taking advantage of multiple CPU cores. The orientation stage has been revamped to handle larger projects and return better results with larger numbers of photos. In addition the user interface and reporting has been improved considerably.

- The animation export has been improved with new abilities for a) automatically adding key frames from each camera position in the project, and b) uploading a newly created PhotoModeler animation directly to YouTube. Combining these features allows one to quickly present a video of your scene and object to YouTube viewers.

- There are new file imports and exports: a) The new LAS format export is used to move point clouds to a number of external 3rd party tools that accept the increasingly popular format. LAS files can also be imported as Point Meshes. b) For those that work with Total Station survey equipment and/or surveying software, PhotoModeler now imports and exports CSV data files that match common survey data file formats.

In addition, there are over 100 other improvements and fixes in 2011.1 - with several of these aimed at improving stability. See the Updates page for additional detail and download instructions.

New Money-Back Return Policy

We've introduced a new money-back return policy for products ordered from Eos.

With the training videos, the demo downloads, the trial key with your own photos, and lastly this new return policy, customers can be very confident starting with PhotoModeler.

Our return rate has been extremely low, so we thought why not make it even easier for those that do need to return it for whatever reason? Between the products and our support services we are confident that customers will find new levels of productivity for 3d measurement and modeling, but it's also nice to know there's no risk to try it out!

New 2011.0.3 Release and 64bit PhotoModeler

The 2011.0.3 upgrade is now available. PhotoModeler customers can get it by using Check for Updates (or by downloading from the support web site).

With this new version we have:

64 bit versions of PhotoModeler and Scanner available in beta. Please contact PhotoModeler support if you are interested in testing it out. The beta is available to existing 2010/2011 customers. The main improvement is that the 64bit version can access more memory so larger photos and projects can be handled. Windows Vista 64 or Windows 7 64bit are required.

The 3D Viewer options dialog now has an Apply button (no need to leave the dialog to try out settings).

The 3D Viewer has a gradient background and new buttons (its great looking!).

Text size for on-photo dimensions can be set in a preference.

SmartMatch can now be called externally via DDE (Scanner only)

... and 59 fixes and small improvements.

Amazing New Examples

Our customers have shown us some very interesting projects recently.

First, we have a forensic application which is also an illustration of performing DSM scanning on a very small object using macro photography. One of the advantages of photo-based 3D scanning is its size independence. This example is a perfect illustration of that. The object is the end of a bullet cartridge and is less than a cm across. See full description here.

Second, we have an interesting application in hydrology and geomorphology. This is scan of a stream bed simulation table. See full description here.

Third, we have a mining project where the photographs were taken by a micro-drone. See full description here.

Lastly, we have a large architectural project done with 50 photographs and a number of overlapping scans resulting with a point cloud of 14 million points. Included is an interesting video that starts with an apparent solid model and zooming in until you can see the detail in the point clouds. See full description here.

PhotoModeler 2010 Released!

PhotoModeler 2010 and PhotoModeler Scanner 2010 are released today for sale.

With a new cornerstone feature in PhotoModeler Scanner 2010 called SmartMatch, the result can often be a stunning, photorealistic 3D model generated from photographs entirely automatically. SmartMatch detects and matches natural features in images - giving automated project setup and 3D data without the use of targets.

In addition, all of the software’s core algorithms have been rewritten for higher performance, and many of the algorithms are now threaded to take advantage of modern multi-core CPUs. Comparing the previous version PhotoModeler 6 to the new PhotoModeler 2010 on a four core computer, a user may experience speed improvements of up to 4x in project processing, 16x with automatic target marking, and 32x during Dense Surface Model creation.

PhotoModeler 2010 is the culmination of two years of development, combining Eos’ own research with feedback from our users, helping to push the new version onward to the key goals of more results, in less time, with less work.

In addition to the speed improvements and SmartMatch, other new features include support for geographic coordinates (geoids, map-systems, conversions); on-photo dimensions; an automated in-background project review; and a new External Geometry Explorer that consolidates control points, scale, rotation, external CAD file import and adds check distances, and multi-point affine. A complete list of new features can be found at: www.photomodeler.com/pm2010. A new set of tutorial videos describe many of the new capabilities in detail at www.photomodeler.com/tutorial-vids/online-tutorials.htm.

PhotoModeler 2010 New SmartMatch

An amazing new feature was added to the PhotoModeler 2010 beta on Friday. The feature is called SmartMatch.

SmartMatch brings automation to create 3d data from every-day images. SmartMatch searches out natural feature points in images, matches them between photos, and generates 3d xyz points automatically. It is as simple as loading your photos and pressing “Go”.

The best way to understand SmartMatch is to watch the video on YouTube (try HD and full screen for best viewing)

For those familiar with PhotoModeler’s coded targets and automated coded target projects, you can think of SmartMatch as automation for photos without targets. SmartMatch creates SmartPoints as a replacement for coded targets in certain scenes. Think of the time that you can save - not having to place targets in your scene. Or consider the ability to work on projects automatically where the targets needed would be too large or difficult to place.
See What's New in 2010.

Since Eos Systems, the developer of PhotoModeler, is located in Vancouver, BC - the home of the 2010 Winter Olympics, what better project to carry out than to model the iconic Inukshuk. Inukshuk are native Inuit statues made of large stacked rocks. They are stone landmarks used for navigation, or markers for hunting grounds or food caches. Vancouver has a large Inukshuk on the shores of English Bay that many say was one of the inspirations for the games logo.

Is the camera in an iPhone 3GS good enough to do photogrammetric modeling? It is indeed! The project described on the iPhone Inukshuk page shows that you can model a complex shape like an inukshuk with an iPhone camera.

New Customer Accuracy Study for a PMV Setup

A new customer-written article titled "Metric Potential of a 3D Measurement System Based on Digital
Compact Cameras" has just been published on our site.

Customers that use multiple cameras simultaneously might wonder what sort of accuracy is possible. Multiple cameras are used with the PhotoModeler Video add-on (PMV) to track object movement or shape change.

This article addresses that while using inexpensive consumer-grade digital cameras with zoom lenses. This type of camera is not ideal for photogrammetry but is inexpensive and if you need more than one (when capturing an object frozen at one instant in time from multiple views) it is nice to keep cost down. When keeping cost down, can you still have accurate measurement? - this paper addresses that concern.

Newly Published Whitepaper

A new white paper titled "A New Way to 3D Scan" has just been published on our site.

Here is an excerpt:

Introduction
Do you need to create dense 3D point clouds and detailed surface models of physical objects, and do you want to do it in a cost-effective and efficient manner? A new class of 3D scanning technologies, called photo-based scanning, may be the solution you are looking for.

This new technology uses a standard off-the-shelf digital camera in combination with specialized software that analyzes the digital images - there is no additional hardware required. The new technology is called photo-based scanning, or photogrammetric scanning.

In this white paper we define 3D scanning, review the current methods for 3D scanning, introduce photo-based scanning, plus examine strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies.
