a stray cat has been coming to my house, ive been feeding it because it was starving , i think it has mange, its fur is all messed up and its eyes are weird…i havent touched it but i have 2 cats of my own that go outside and they fight with it.what should i do?i dont want it to be put to sleep…is their a cure for mange?

although there are treatments for mange, you cannot be sure that it has mange until you take it in to a vet. Do your cats have their vaccinations up to date? have you recently had them checked out by your vet? when you say fighting, is it just some scratches or bite wounds as well? If this cat is a stray, call the local humane society to pick it up, if it is sick, it needs to be cared for, and if nobody is willing to care for it, it deserves a humane death instead of being hit by a car, chewed up by a dog or die of feline leukaemia or infectious peritonitis by itself under a bush or deck slowly. If you can trap it and get it looked after you may find that it is not a bad cat, just simply an unkempt one and it might learn to live with your cats. In the end, don’t trust it has ‘just mange’, it may carry any number of other diseases, that may not only be dangerous to your cats but perhaps to dogs or humans also, like rabies for example. I don’t like to see these cats be euthanized either, but it is better to have a humane death, than a miserable life and suffer for some irresponsible human’s actions. You never know, it might be tattooed or microchipped and then you can try to locate the owner. Good Luck to you and your cats with this situation.

extreme itching, flakey skin, loss of hair, build up of flakey skin skin red and sores due to scratching.

How did you know that it is Sarcoptic mange? Did you take the dog to a vet and have a skin scraping done?

Mange comes in three varieties: Demodectic, Cheyletiella and Sarcoptic. It is caused by different species of mites, tiny eight-legged critters related to spiders.

Sarcoptic mange, also known as scabies, is caused by a microscopic mite. The female mite causes the characteristic intense itching as they burrow under the skin to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch in a few days, develop into adults, and begin laying their own eggs in less than three weeks.

Dogs with scabies dig and bite at themselves with great ferocity. Their skin reacts with oozing sores, and secondary infection may set in, requiring treatment with an antibiotic in addition to treatment for the mites. Unfortunately, the sarcoptic mange mite can be difficult to find in skin scrapings, and unless the veterinarian parts the hair and carefully examines the bare skin for the characteristic pin-point bite marks, diagnosis is difficult. Furthermore, the presence of a secondary skin infection can hamper the search for the mite bite marks.

Telltale signs of sarcoptic mange are crusty ear tips, fierce itching, and hair loss, particularly on the ears, elbows, legs, and face in the early stages. Later on, the hair loss spreads throughout the body.

Sarcoptic mange is contagious to canines and humans. If the dogs share sleeping places or if the infected dog sleeps on beds or furniture, everyone will begin scratching. It is not unheard of for the family dog to infest the kids, the kids to infest their playmates, and the playmates to infest their pets and parents with scabies. Fortunately scabies in humans is self-limiting, that is the mite can burrow under the skin and cause itching, but cannot complete its life cycle on humans and dies within a few weeks.

Veterinarians now use Ivermectin in two doses, two weeks apart, to kill the mites. They may also prescribe steroids for short-term use to relieve the itching until the mites begin to die off and give the dog some relief. Itching usually begins to subside within a few days of the first dose of Ivermectin.

Canine skin damaged by sarcoptic mange and secondary skin infections can take weeks or months to recover, depending on the scope of the problems. Frequent medicated baths may be necessary to soothe irritated skin.

Mange damage can mimic that caused by other skin conditions, including autoimmune diseases, bacterial infections secondary to flea allergies, and contact dermatitis, making it impossible for the pet owner to diagnose with any success. If your dog suffers from irritated, itchy skin, make an appointment with the veterinarian. Early diagnosis of any of these problems will give you a head start on a cure and will be less uncomfortable for the dog and your wallet.

Please take your dog to the vet for the appropriate treatment.

He is going to get treatment for mange but I was wondering if he will have those bald spots permanently.
This is our first dog and he has always scratched from day one. We have been giving him flea medication also from day one. He started with 2 small bald spots on his leg and we thought he might have scraped himself while playing in the yard. However, more spots started to appear and we finally took him to the vet. What is this spots?

Will the hair of the dogs grow back after treatment for mange?

How to get dogs to grow hair back? My understanding is that his hair will grow back with time and healing. I’ve heard of some really bad cases where pets have lost 50% or more of their hair, and have had a full recovery, but it will take time… sometimes weeks or months depending on how bad the loss is.

I’d like to ask you a question in return, if you dont mind…
What was the very first sign you noticed, that your dog had it?

I’m actually researching this very issue, as my little chihuahua has had a horrible case of the ‘itchies’ for over a week now, but NO other signs. No hair loss, no sores, no rash. But definitely intense itching. So much so, that she’s waking me up at night. I’m so sad for her, and I’ve already treated her with Revolution, but no relief. She just keeps scratching and biting at her hind-quarters. Thank goodness… not so bad to make herself bleed. What is the best treatment for this? What will you recommend?

Mange Cream Can Eradicate Mites And Mange

Your dog could have skin troubles just like we human beings do too and that’s why mange cream is made. They have the very same disorders such as oily skin, dried-out skin, itchiness as well as rashes etc that needs to be treated with mange cream. At the very first hint of problems you’d need to hurry to the veterinarian’s clinic and the rest of the medicine is comparable including ointments and mange cream with appropriate dietary modifications.
Pets get skin ailment and other ailments as a result of different causes. A lot of them are very similar to human beings. Issues caused due to inner body conditions as well as ailments like thyroid problems and so on. They develop allergies to just like we do. Of course pets also fall prey often to skin illness on account of flea, ticks as well as mange.
Your pet foods particularly wheat, diary and beef are known to cause worms and skin ailment inside the dogs. The sure shot sign that some thing is wrong occurs when your pet starts biting himself continuously or keeps licking him all the time. You ought to then take him to the veterinarian’s clinic instantly for a check-up. Is Mange Cream effective?

Mange Cream Recommended By Veterinarians

These disorders may trigger substantial skin rashes and also infection. Mange Cream should be applied. Your veterinarian ought to have the ability to recommend the suitable anti-biotics with required skin creams and lotions to take down the infection.
When in case of infection, your vet will prescribe necessary oral medication also as the skin creams, mange cream and anti bacterial creams to quit the infection from spreading as well as curing faster.
Component of the mange cream treatment may also involve abstaining from giving particular foods to the dog to stop further chances of infection. You vet can advice a diet plan which is devoid of such foods and a healthier option.
In all cases of food infections, the veterinarians will suggest a course of anti-biotics to remove the bacterial infection, sometimes Mange Cream. This can include either oral medication or perhaps injections or skin ointments dependant on the trouble and also mange creams.
You must often get such illnesses treated by the vet, for he knows what exactly is the best course of treatment and be able to identify the problem accurately.Mange Cream is recommended. He has a lot of options of oral antibiotics, injections, flea collars, skin creams, mange creams, shampoos, steroids etc and can select suitable course dependant on the seriousness of condition.

Using Mange Cream is an Effective Way for Getting Rid of Mites in Pets

All such remedies take a while for curing the pets using mange cream. Whilst in some instances your dog may well get nicely within a few weeks, sometimes the procedure using Mange Cream might need to be continued for a number of months before he is entirely remedied or at time some years too.Mange Cream is effective.

I have taken my dog to the vet 2x’s within 2 months and she has been diagnosed with mange. She started getting better after a month the bald spots started coming back. I took her back they said she had fleas (which I kind of figured that out because I saw one when I gave her the 2nd dip bath), they treated her with frontline. Now the hair loss is happening again in a different spot around the same location (right over her tail and down her tail) and red spots are present. I have a poodle mix 6 1/2 months old and the person I bought her from didn’t take care of them well, so she had to come to me with these problems. Anyone with a pet know vet bills aren’t cheap and I can afford to take my dog to the vet but I refuse to allow them to continue to take my my money and my dog isn’t getting better. This is my 1st dog I love her to death, please somebody help me help my dog. What can I do at home or buy over the counter to treat mange? Not trying to avoid the vet I need something to work.

It is a long process for some dogs, also it depends on the type of mange your dog has. Sounds probably like Demadex which is also called blood mange for the simple fact it is in the blood… This can be stress induced, fleas make matters much worse. You have to watch what food you feed your dog. I would recommend purina one sensitive systems. No table scraps, really no treats if possible. I have just aquired a dog who has been dealing with it for about a year… of course the mom didn’t stop the table food, or treats full preservitives. Now she is strictly on purina dry food and is starting to look a little better. I really hope this helps you and good luck. Email me if you have any other Q’s.

Could my dog have mange?

She is a lab/rot mix and recently started acting lazy and tired. She also is losing patches of hair on her chest and she also has a patch missing on the top of her neck that looks like an open sore. She is usually very active running everywhere hunting and playing. I don’t want the expenses of going to the vet, but I wondered if anyone knew what she might have and how I could treat her over the counter. I will take her to the vet if need be, but looking for alternative. Closes thing I could find for her symptoms was mange. We lost a cat 1 year ago to these same kind of symptoms because we just asumed he had gotten in a fight with another animal, but now that my dog is showing the same symptoms, I don’t want to lose her too. Thanks

Have him checked for mange and other diseases

Mange can cause hair loss, but usually not lethargic behavior. Other alternatives might be Lyme Disease (carried by ticks), heartworms, distemper, or intestinal parasites. These are just a few I could come up with- the sypmtoms you are describing could be ascribed to many different illnesses, other than mange.

I think this is a serious enough condition, even if it is not mange, that a visit to the vet is in order. Explain your financial situation to the vet, and I’m sure they will do the best they can to work within your budget. No one likes to talk about money when it comes to caring for a loved member of the family, but it is a practical issue that no doubt the vet has helped clients with before. They can help you narrow down the possibilities based on the dog’s vaccination and behavior history, and diseases/parasites that are common in your area.

Knowing what is causing the dog’s symptoms will actually save you money in the long run, becuase you’re not wasting money on over-the-counter remedies that were cures for a disease the dog didn’t actually have. (Example: buying a mange treatment when the dog actually has ringworm would be useless).

I always thought it was rare for dogs to get it and it’s nothing I ever worried about my dogs getting or asked my vet about. I thought if there was some kind of high risk for it, they’d tell me about it and what to do to prevent it. But I see so many questions in here that everybody’s dog has mange so how exactly do they get it and what can you do to prevent it? Thank you.

Demadex is caused by a mite that almost all dogs have but their immune system keeps the mite in check enough to have no symptoms. An immune deficient dog (which can be caused by stress, poor food or heredity) may show symptoms- still usually it self cures (usually when stress passes), unless the dog stays immune deficient…..
SArdeptic mange is contagous. its also a mite -but less common

Its also worthy of note that the “diagnosis” in many questions here is made by a layman owner – usually from some hair loss and may well be another condition

Most dog owners will handle mange at 1 time or another. There are 3 distinct sorts of mange, 2 of which need vet intervention. Cheyletiella is the least significant kind of mange. Mange is due to mites, where each kind of mange is due to a different species of mites. Although there are a few mites that will affect both kittens and cats of any age or breed, the most typical ear mites which will influence your kitty is the Demodex canis, Sarcoptes canis, or Notoedres cati mites. The bugs that cause this condition are ear mites. Mites are highly transmissible and can be transmitted awfully simply from ma to kitten, for moggy to kitty, or from pussies to dogs along with dogs to moggies. In extreme cases of mange in cats, they can also be spread to humans and the major kind of mange that may be broadcast to humans is known as scabies.

If you can utilize a home cure for dog mange it will also help to clear up the difficulty as he gets a little older. Here is where you begin to see some alopecia and he will be eternally itching and scratching away at the inflamed areas. Infrequently nonetheless, the mange continues to cause him difficulty and can spread to cover parts of his complete body. In this circumstance you may help to reduce his symptoms by utilizing a home cure for dog mange. So what precisely is a home cure for dog mange? The best home remedy for dog mange has to do a couple of things. When the affected dog has Mange the living mites can lay twenty to thirty eggs. These eggs can hatch anywhere between eight to seventeen days.

The different signs of Mange are : Hair Loss-this could be a tiny or a lot, Itching and scratching-This often only occurs in the influenced areas, Red spots, Blisters, and Infection. There are various symptoms for each illness, condition and infection out there so it’s important if you have got any concerns or your dog is showing symptoms to search out medical assistance for your dear family pet. With all that scratching going on, it’ll cause sores on the skin. The skin will also become dry, crusty, thick and wrinkled. The mites will reproduce and when this occurs, there’ll be a strong odour coming from the area affected. Your pet could also develop blisters and bleeding.

I got a puppy (a bischon mix) and everything was fine for a year, then he started scratching and biting himself until he looked like I had been abusing him (bloody, bald spots everywhere). He hid under the bed for the next year and a half while I took him to several vets. One of them only gave me an antibiotic spray for hot spots, which of course didn’t work; one of them said he needed a $40/week dip in something, so we did that for awhile and he always felt better but after 6 weeks of this he really wasn’t getting any better. Then my friend suggested I take him to an old country vet, which I did and I’m glad I did!

More About Mange

He did a scraping, looked under the microscope and said he has red mange, not contagious and he explained it to be like acne was for humans, i.e., all dogs have it, it lives in their hair follicles, he just happens to be bothered by it. Because he still had bloody sores all over, he gave me cipro (an antibiotic) and he said it HAD to be cipro and to go to the farm store and get 1% injectable ivermectin. The dosage to use for heartworm medication is .1cc per every 10 lbs., but he at least needs to be on .8cc’s of the ivermectin for it to do any good, so to increase it every few days until I got him up to the .8cc’s a day and if he starts throwing up, drop back down to the previous dose and try to work him back up to the .8cc’s a day. He is 28 lbs. so the dose needs to be triple the norm. Thankfully, this treatment has worked and I now have a happy dog but I still have to keep him on the ivermectin or it comes back. The vet also said that if it didn’t work, then we could try cancer drugs but the dog won’t last very long on them. He also said it is an immune disorder that is found in certain breeds…not contagious.
