I didn't understand how it helped, but I was faithful. After a few months, I was laying down doing a form of palming (warm rice bag on the eyes) and feeling very relaxed, when I noticed that my eyes were moving back and forth, on their own. Since then, I have found that if I focus on that feeling, my eyes relax and begin to sway without my conscious effort. I just found some cool articles by Dr. Bates explaining how this helped other people, as well.

http://www.central-fixation.com/better-eyesight-magazine/better-eyesight-1926-10.php

I just found this website. I need to see, but I wanted my eyes to be able to relax. I also spent lots of time outside in the bright sunshine. I didn't do very many eye relaxation techniques, but I checked my eyes before I started, and then a few days later. I couldn't believe the difference. I was always under the impression that your eyes couldn't get better while wearing lesser prescription glasses, but my eyes were much better. I do think that you have to be constantly mentally trying to see better. You can't just wear them and not do anything else. Even looking and this monitor, I start to see the words become blurry, and I have to remember that I can see them clearly, and then they clear up again. You have to focus on one letter, and remember what it looks like clearly. If you try to do the whole screen, it just gets worse. I usually have to blink a few times, as well. For some reason, that helps me. So, I've ordered a stronger pair of glasses for driving, that are still below my full strength prescription. You can order them online from Zennioptical.com for only $13 or, more specifically, $8 with $5 shipping. I've got three pairs now. The strongest pair is for night driving. I just keep them in the car in case I need them. I still struggle keeping my eyes relaxed at night. Last night I looked at my eye chart, and I couldn't read the three bottom lines at all. They were completely blurry. Usually I can read them all. Boy, our eyes are complex.

Sunlight

Sunlight is one of the best light sources for eye relaxation. Most people are scared to look at it because it will supposedly permanently damage the eye. Well, that is up for debate. But, since most people won't even consider the idea, I have come up with a way to still achieve a great deal of relaxation from the sun, without looking at it. I, personally, have achieved the most relaxation from this method than any others. (Dr. Bates has written about sun treatment but it was ommitted from the online version of the book)

There are a couple of different ways to do it. Both involve looking towards the sun with the eyes closed. For people with extremely bad eyesight, this cannot be done without much discomfort. So, I like to hold my hands in front of my face to shield the light from coming in. Then, I open my fingers slowly, gradually letting the light in. Only open them as far as you can comfortably go. To make sure that the sun is shining directly on the eyelids, it may be necessary to open your eyes for a split second. It is important that the suns rays are shining directly on your eyelids. I like to lay out on the grass and relax while doing this. First, I look at something easy to remember, such as the siding of the house, and then, after I have relaxed for a few minutes or more (the more the better) I look back at the siding to ascertain my progress. I love that part. I am continually amazed at what I can see when I am done. And continually disappointed when I have to stop due to kids, clouds, or sunburn.

Another thing I have tried recently, is closing my eyes really tight and holding it as long as I can. This somehow relaxes my eyes and at first they go all bright inside, and then they go dark with a red glow slowly shining in. I slowly relax and let the light in. If I tilt my head back so that my pupils are in position near my lashes, I seem to be able to endure the light better, and can relax.

When your eyes are tense, when looking at light with your eyes closed, it appears shadowy. The more you relax, the brighter the light and less shadows. My sister says that when looking at the sun (with the eyes closed) it should appear white. I have only ever seen a bright orange color, so I'm assuming that I haven't achieved total relaxation yet.

Dr. Bates' Book

It is very beneficial to read Dr. Bates' Book. You have to believe in what you are doing to achieve results. The more you know about the whole process, and why it works, the more you will have faith in it. I strongly suggest reading the entire book before starting your own home training sessions. Don't give up on the confusing parts. Just keep reading.

Here is the link to one of his books. It is completely free to read online. Read Dr. Bates chapter 24 http://www.i-see.org/perfect_sight/chap24.html on the best method for doing so. A few points to remember are...

1. Track your progress. You'd be surprised how quickly you forget what you could and couldn't see the day before.

2. It is okay, and good, to memorize the letters. You know what you can see. It's not like its a test or anything.

3. If you can't see today, what you could yesterday, don't dwell on it. That is normal. Try not to 'try' and see it. Just look away and try again another time when you are more relaxed. Remember to use a relaxation technique before looking at it. (palming, light, etc.)

When I first started using the eye chart, I had to stand four feet from it to even see the third line. So, that's where I stayed. It took me about two months to see the next two lines down. Now I can barely make out the seventh line.

I just recently started teaching my brother and neice about Dr. Bates' method. They were able to see two more lines after only a few minutes of palming. That is so not fair. But, more power to them.

Here are some links for eye charts.

This one you can buy for $1 or print for free. You print it on two pages and paste it together. That's where I got the one in the picture. If you can't get the link to work, you can click on my pictures and save them to your computer for printing.
http://www.hometrainingtools.com/articles/eye-chart-science-project.html

This one can be printed on one page.

http://www.disabled-world.com/artman/publish/eye-chart.shtml

This one you use on your screen.

http://www.medindia.net/patients/eye_test/visual_accuracy.asp

This one you can buy for $10.

http://www.allegromedical.com/diagnostic-products-c521/snellen-eye-chart-p189809.html

My Favorite

This is my favorite relaxation technique. It never fails to leave me seeing much better. Problem is, I can't do it very often. You'll see why.

First, you have to make a rice bag. I just used a sock and filled it with about two cups of rice. It has to be a big sock, so it can drape comfortably over your eyes. Heat it about 45 sec. until the temperature is not too hot to be uncomfortable. Then, lay down in a nice cozy place and put it on your eyes. Just relax and think happy thoughts, maybe even play relaxing music. If you fall asleep, that is fine. When you wake up, heat it again, and repeat as long as you are allowed to nap. When you finally get up, you should notice a huge difference in your sight. Try looking at your eye chart and note the difference. I tried it today, again, and was thrilled with the results. Too bad my kids prevent me from doing this more often.

Tip - when removing the bag, keep your eyes closed to get used to the light, before opening them.

FYI - this sometimes relaxes one eye more than the other. Don't be alarmed. Your eyes will even out again within a few minutes of resuming regular activities.

Wore Glasses to a Movie

Yesterday I went to a movie. I wanted to see the movie clearly, so I wore my -5.00 glasses. (Remember, my original perscription was -6.5) I could see clearly for the whole movie, and everything on the way home. When I got home, I took them off and looked at my eye chart. It was extremely blurry, and I lost three lines that I could see earlier. That's the affect of glasses that are too strong. Hmm, I guess my sight has improved a lot since last I wore them. I should have worn my -3.25 pair. Anway, not all is lost. This morning I could see all the lines again.

Starting the Program

I first heard about curing your eyesight from my sister. I was skeptical, besides the fact that you are supposed to take off your glasses and leave them off. So, I forgot about it. Later, when I was researching a recurring earache I have, I stumbled on the works of Dr. Bates. His books are not easy reads. They're very scientific, which of course, to me, made them more believable. So, I read one, and was very convinced that it would work. I began immediately. I had to car pool everywhere I went, and I couldn't tell my boys apart. Cleaning was a joke. Well, who needs perfection anyway, right? So, I shortly ordered a pair of plain -3.25 in both eyes, glasses from Zennioptical.com for only $13. You can get any kind of fancy prescription, but I just wanted the same in both eyes, without compensation for astigmatism. (I am -6.5 in one eye and -6 in the other) They took two weeks to get in, and by the time I got them, my eyesight had improved enough that I could where them driving during the day. Night was a different story, and I recently got a new pair for night driving. They are prescription -5.00 in both eyes. During the day, I can see perfectly with them, but my vision gets worse at night, so they aren't perfect. Clarity is pretty good, but I do have a problem with double vision at night. Makes sense. I'm afraid of the dark, and fear causes strain in the eyes. Anyway, I do best on my progression when I am not wearing them unless I have to. The -5 glasses are now too strong for daytime use, so I just don't wear anything.

After about two weeks of practicing Dr. Bates methods, I started seeing things. It was so amazing. It would be something new everyday. First, just simple line designs started showing up. Then, more intricate line patterns, like plaid shirts. Now I can see almost any type of pattern, from designs on couches, to outlines of objects, and even the wheat in my jar. My favorite is bark patterns on trees. I love to use sunlight relaxation, and then judge the change by looking at the bark from about ten feet away. Today I was marveling that I could see road signs, and such. That means that I can almost drive without glasses. Well, not quite yet. But, it's exciting.

My Eyesight History

I thought I should give a little background on my bad eyesight. I got my first glasses in third grade. In fifth grade, I had to get a new pair. In sixth grade I got an even yet stronger prescription, so this time I got contacts, to help stop my eyes from changing. I'm pretty sure I got two more stronger prescriptions after that. So, before I started this program, my eyesight was about -6.5 in one eye, and about -6 in the other. If I put my glasses down, and forgot where I put them, I couldn't find them again without having my face about six inches from the surface. When people were in comfortable conversing distance, I could see basic shapes for their facial features, but I couldn't tell if they were happy or sad. At a distance, sometimes I couldn't even tell they were there, especially if they didn't move. Everything was just colors mixed into each other. Without my glasses or contacts, I was useless.

So, now I am 29, meaning that I have had to wear corrective lenses to function, for 21 yrs, or most my life.

Eye Massage

I have a little setup that I use on family and friends to show them instant results in eye sight change. I printed out a page of plain black and white stripes. Then I posted it on a wall, about 4 feet from a chair. Next to the chair is a bright lamp. Bright lights help your eyes relax. Make sure the lamp is placed such that it doesn't block the view of the stripes, or shine in your eyes while looking at the stripes. Now for the procedure. Study the picture of the stripes for a few seconds. Then sit down in the chair and close your eyes. Look towards the light, and gently massage the tops of your eye balls. Next, gently hold your eyelids down without blocking the light. Think happy soothing thoughts as you let the light in through the lids. Repeat the process several times, never opening your eyes, until they are no longer sore and the light is brighter on the inside of the eyelids. Then, relax and turn towards the stripes. Think about what the stripes look like and then open your eyes. Because stripes are easy to remember, you should be able to see them more clearly than normal for a split second or two. The more you try this, the longer you can hold the clear picture.

If this method doesn't work, try palming instead of using the light. If you love to read, you can use the eye chart instead. http://perfecteyesightnaturally.blogspot.com/2008/06/eye-chart.html

(you can click on the picture for full size and save it to your own computer for personal use)

Another way to palm

I tried a new thing today. For me, it seems much easier to relax if I don't have to hold my eyes closed. And, I get tired holding my hands in place. So, I made something to cover my eyes, blocking the light, and putting slight pressure on my eyes to keep them closed. It's just a simple piece of fabric with a cut out for the nose, and a strap around my head. I just handstitched it. I was able to walk around the house, as if blind, and therefore distract myself from trying to relax. I could see much better after trying this for a while. I probably had it on for ten minutes or so. It was like a game. The kids love to watch me stumble into things. I am going to try sleeping with it, and see what happens. I tend to really tense up at night when trying to keep my eyes closed.

Truth Must Always Be Truth

Dr. William H. Finally, about half a dozen years ago, I undertook a series of observations upon the eyes of human beings and the lower animals the results of which convinced both myself and others that the lens is not a factor in accommodation, and that the adjustment necessary for vision at different distances is affected in the eye, precisely as it is in the camera, by a change in the length of the organ, this alteration being brought about by the action of the muscles on the out"

In normal English terms - the lens of the eye isn't the cause of bad eyesight, but the outside muscles of the eye change the shape of the eye.

Eyesight changes periodically

Dr. William H. Bates, "Perfect Eyesight Without Glasses" chapter 7

"Of twenty thousand school children examined in one year, more than half had normal eyes, with sight which was perfect at times; but not one of them had perfect sight in each eye at all times of the day. Their sight might be good in the morning and imperfect in the afternoon, or imperfect in the morning and perfect in the afternoon. Many children could read one Snellen test card: with perfect sight, while unable to see a different one perfectly. Many could also read some letters of the alphabet perfectly, while unable to distinguish other letters of the same size under similar conditions. The degree of this imperfect sight varied within wide limits, from one-third to one-tenth, or less. Its duration was also variable. Under some conditions it might continue for only a few minutes, or less; under others it might prevent the subject from seeing the blackboard for days, weeks, or even longer. Frequently all the pupils in a classroom were affected to this extent."

Glasses

Dr. William H. Bates, "Perfect Eyesight Without Glasses" chapter 8

"That glasses must injure the eye is evident from the facts given in the preceding chapter. One cannot see through them unless one produces the degree of refractive error which they are designed to correct. But refractive errors, in the eye which is left to itself, are never constant. If one secures good vision by the aid of concave, or convex, or astigmatic lenses, therefore, it means that one is maintaining constantly a degree of refractive error which otherwise would not be maintained constantly. It is only to be expected that this should make the condition worse, and it is a matter of common experience that it does. After people once begin to wear glasses their strength, in most cases, has to be steadily increased in order to maintain the degree of visual acuity secured by the aid of the first pair."

Eyestrain

Dr. William H. Bates, "Perfect Eyesight Without Glasses" chapter 9

"It has been demonstrated in thousands of cases that all abnormal action of the external muscles of the eyeball is accompanied by a strain or effort to see, and that with the relief of this strain the action of the muscles becomes normal and all errors of refraction disappear. ... so long as it does not try to see, the external muscles act normally and there is no error of refraction. This fact furnishes us with the means by which all these conditions, so long held to be incurable, may be cured."

"Primarily the strain to see is a strain of the mind, and, as in all cases in which there is a strain of the mind, there is a loss of mental control. Anatomically the results of straining to see at a distance may be the same as those of regarding an object at the near point without strain; but in one case the eye does what the mind desires, and in the other it does not."

"Fortunately, all persons are able to relax under certain conditions at will. In all uncomplicated errors of refraction the strain to see can be relieved, temporarily, by having the patient look at a blank wall without trying to see. -To secure permanent relaxation sometimes requires considerable time and much ingenuity. The same method cannot be used with everyone. The ways in which people strain to see are infinite, and the methods used to relieve the strain must be almost equally varied. Whatever the method that brings most relief, however, the end is always the same, namely relaxation. By constant repetition and frequent demonstration and by all means possible, the fact must be impressed upon the patient that perfect sight can be obtained only by relaxation. Nothing else matters."

Don't Buy Eye Programs

You can learn all about curing your eyesight through researching the internet. After that, progress was very speedy, as long as I only used my lower prescription glasses for emergencies. (these can be bought online for $13 from Zennioptical.com) This will be different for everyone. Don't give up. This allows your eyes to relax because there is nothing to see. Doing this five minutes a day, or more, will help your vision get better. There is an exception to this rule. People who have worn glasses for many years, sometimes find that blocking all light actually causes them to strain more. This is common, and other forms of relaxation should be used. I have this problem, but, after several months of using other forms of relaxation, and learning what it feels like to relax, I am now able to use the palming method.

Strain and the Brain

Wow! I just had a realization. I'm sitting here reading Dr. William Bates book entitled, "Perfect Sight Without Glasses" and my son is in the other room singing a song. He sang his favorite song through once, and then started over. He missed one word, and became frustrated. After that, it was near impossible for him to remember the words, and he proceeded to cry. Then came the realization. When our eyes strain, it becomes more difficult to see. This also applies to the brain. This is my sons favorite song, yet when he messed up once, his perfectionism caused him to brain strain, making him unable to remember the rest of the song.
