In contrast, the poor level of the diet can give impact for the immune system too. They can even experience the epilepsy, diabetes, hypertensions, cancers, arthritis, and also liver failure.

Both dogs, such as pitbull mixes, and bully dog breeds or the smaller pets, are sometimes offered by a wide range of the diets which have been grouped as the hyperactive behavior with the low level of the diets.

Dog is one of the most animal which most of people pick as a pet at their house. People tend to choose dog as a pet because of some reasons. As we know that dog can be included on ‘people’s friend’ kind of animal. Research shows that dog listen to human’s command very well. It also shows that dog is the most loyal animal among the entire pet. On the Hachiko movie, we can see how loyal a dog to its owner. For some people who just raised a dog as a pet may have a problem on knowing how long are dogs pregnant, how to know when they are pregnant, how to prepare dog’s pregnancy and many more.

So, actually, how long is it?

There is no exact answer for how long are dogs pregnant question. Just like the other mammals and human, dog’s length of pregnancy depends on some factors. However, some people said that the length of dog’s pregnancy is about nine weeks. The range of the day is between 58 to 68 days. It can be faster or slower than that range of days.

What are the factors that cause the length of dog’s pregnancy?

The first factor is the litter size. Usually, a dog that has smaller litter size will have longer days of pregnancy. This is because some puppies absolutely mean more room on the uterus. On the contrary, dogs that have bigger litter size might deliver the babies sooner.

That’s because the puppies might trigger the labor sooner and run out from the room faster. The mother of puppy’s size can be the second factor of how long are dogs pregnant. Big breed mothers usually carry the babies on a shorter time than small breed mothers. Even though there are always exceptions for this factor. The size of the mother and also the number of pups carried by the mother are two elements that can’t be despite.

The last factor of how long are dogs pregnant is family line average. If you want to know how long your dog will carry her babies, try to track down the mother’s and the grandmother’s pregnancies. Although it seems so impossible to find out the history of the pregnancies, some professional breeders keep on trying to track down the history line of dog’s birth to know the length of the pregnancy for sure.

The Bernese mountain dog is lovable and big. It is known for having traits such as loyalty and attentiveness. It is precisely because of these attributes that it needs to be included in different types of family activities.

What is more, it learns quickly regardless of the fact that it takes a longer duration to mature. To take proper care of this breed, there are a couple of things you need to bear in mind, and some of these are as highlighted below.

As soon as you get the Bernese mountain dog, it is advisable to have it vaccinated. Afterward, you should ensure it gets yearly vaccinations booster to ensure its immunity from diseases is enhanced. In addition to this, it should also be de-wormed after every 3 months and consult with a vet for the purpose of flea control. Vets bills can be costly but by taking out a good pet insurance plan will help with any unexpected vets bills.

The kind of food you choose for the breed should be high grade. For quality products, settle for meat and avoid crude protein or keep it a minimum of 30%. Crude fat should not exceed 20%, and the fiber content should at the very least be 4% or lower.

When it wakes up, it should spend quality time with the family and not left in the backyard alone.

The dog should be trained while it is still at the puppy stage. This is because of its huge size. The earlier you teach it household manners and basic obedience, the higher the chances you will end up with a well-behaved dog. Since they are always eager to please and quick at learning, training a Bernese should not be a difficult task.

Take into consideration the fact that these breeds take a longer duration to mature compared to other breeds and for this reason; you need to exercise a high level of gentleness and patience. The Bernese dog should be taught how to socialize with other family members from an early age.

A lot of dog breeds have health problems, and all responsible dog owners should have sufficient dog insurance as you should have regular visits to the vets and some treatments may be costly.

Apples – There are Vitamin C, fiber, potassium and flavonoids in apples. A good size apple treat is half of its slice.

Bananas – Except lots of carbohydrates and potassium in bananas. Cutting a 1 inch part of a banana is more than to be a good size treat.

Blackberries – Blackberries contain Vitamins A, C, E and K. The fruit also has Omega-3, antioxidants, folate, and manganese. Two or three blackberries as treats should be more than enough.

Blueberries – Vitamins A, B complex, C, and E along with iron, selenium, antioxidants, and zinc are in blueberries. As with blackberries, two or three of blueberries will suffice for your pet.

Cantaloupe – This fruit has lots of nutrients and minerals such as folic acid, niacin, potassium, magnesium, fiber, Vitamins A, B complex and C. Just a 1-inch wedge of sliced cantaloupe should be enough for a canine to eat as a treat.

Cranberries – You can find manganese, fiber and Vitamin C in cranberries. Stewed Cranberries are the best kind to serve to your pet.

Kiwis – The fruit has potassium, fiber and large amounts of Vitamin C. You can choose to either give one slice or half a slice to your dog.

Oranges – Not only does the orange taste sweet, but it has fiber, phytonutrients, iron, flavonoids, calcium and folic acid. Additionally, Vitamins like A, C, B1 and B6 are in abundance in oranges. Half of an orange’s segment should be enough to eat.

To reiterate these are safe fruits for dogs to eat. However, there are some fruits here that have parts that are inedible to canines. An apple’s core along with its seeds contains arsenic so remove them first before serving it to your pet. The orange’s rind and seeds are also not edible hence their removal is necessary.

The list of fruits above is the recommended fruits for dogs. But if your pet is allergic to particular fruit then stop feeding it with that fruit. However there are types of fruits available so if you want to, then give them a try. However do avoid grapes or raisins, figs, coconut, avocados, lemon tree and orange (not fruit) tree. Avoid these fruits since they are a health hazard to canines even in little bits. If your pet managed to ingest some of the fruits, then have a veterinarian check it.

So fruits can have positive benefits to canines, but what exactly makes them good fruits for dogs? That answer is that fruits contain various minerals and nutrients that maintain the well-being of your pet. If you are interested to know what are the nutrients and minerals and how they work, then read the list below.

Potassium – Helps in several cellular functions like conducting electrical charges to a canine’s muscles, heart, and nerves. Low levels of potassium results in hypokalemia.

Fiber – Provides assistance to a dog’s digestive system and can’t prevent diarrhea as well as constipation. Fiber also bulks up your pet’s food intake and makes it easier to pass through its colon.

Phytonutrients – This particular nutrient has antibacterial, anticancer, anti-aging, antifungal, anti-degeneration and antihelminthic (anti-worm) properties.

Carbohydrates – Carbohydrates are a good source of energy for very active dogs. If your dog likes to walk, play, run and do doggie sports, then an influx of carbohydrates is what it needs.

Antioxidants – Free radicals in dogs tend to speed up aging and cause ailments like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and arthritis. Antioxidants are the best components in a dog’s body to offset these effects.

Omega-3 – You are going to need Omega-3 to deal with allergies, skin conditions, kidney functions, lymphoma, heart disease, arthritis and cognitive functions in your pet.

Vitamins – Expect some Vitamin A, C, E, K, B1, and B6. Vitamin A prevents dull coat and dry itchy skin. Vitamin C boosts the immune system of canines. Vitamin E improves the circulatory system, muscles, and injury healing. Vitamin K allows for dog blood to clot properly. Vitamin B1 prevents thiamine deficiency. And finally, Vitamin B6 serves as a cofactor for amino acid metabolism reactions.

Iron – Certain enzymes depend on iron to function normally. Iron also prevents anemia or low red blood cells. Red blood cells are important to dogs since they carry and distribute oxygen throughout canines’ bodies.

Folic acid – A necessary nutrient for pets that are pregnant since it prevents pregnancy deficiencies. Folic acid or B9 helps combat low cholesterol, cataracts, depression and hardening of the arteries.

Calcium – Calcium plays a significant role in developing strong bones and keeps a dog’s coat, teeth, and nails healthy.

Now all of these nutrients and minerals are not in just one fruit. You may have to feed your dog several kinds of fruits sometimes to maximize the health benefits. Also be careful of excessive fruit feeding since some minerals and nutrients can become harmful in large quantities. Nevertheless, fruits for dogs are an excellent source of minerals and nutrients.

That is all the recommended fruits for dogs so give some of a try. Just remember that fruits are not a dog’s main meal and don’t serve them on a constant or daily basis. Fruits are treats or snacks for canines and should not be a substitute for what they usually eat. So go ahead buy some fruits, prepare it and give some to your dog. Your precious deserves the best that benefits its health and serving fruits are the means to do it.

Hungry dogs often scratch their food bowl. If your dog has to use the bathroom, you might see it paw at your back door. When you have a dog wanting attention, it could give you a certain look. Your dog cannot communicate everything that he needs easily so read the advice below to learn how to understand your dog.

Be sure your house is dog-proofed. Before you bring a new dog home, make sure the whole area is safe. Store things like meds and cleaning products in a safe location, and be sure to keep any indoor trash cans behind a cabinet. Some plants in your house may be toxic to your dog, so they should be kept where your dog cannot reach them.

It’s an excellent idea to keep a snapshot of your dog handy (a digital pic on your phone is ideal) whenever you’re traveling with him. Therefore, if your animals get lost, there is a recent photo that can be used for the purpose of locating them.

[alert-note]TIP! Consider the situation before allowing a dog to kiss your face. While those sloppy kisses may be cute, be aware that your dog’s mouth is apt to be crawling with germs and bacteria.[/alert-note]

Use flea treatments with caution. Several have cancer causing ingredients, and they can be especially harmful to young children. Ask your vet about alternative treatments that are more family-friendly, and be sure to keep small children away during applications.

Keep a leash on your dog at all times. Something could distract him, like a squirrel or a cat, causing him to leave your side. You’re responsible for their actions and safety.

Avoid the bargain brands of pet food. Cheap dog food usually includes fillers (such as corn or soybeans) which are not appropriate for dogs. It may also contain poor quality ingredients which may hurt your dog’s health over time. Check out professional recommendations from groups online. Your dog is going to be healthier if he eats better.

[alert-note]TIP! Your dog speaks to you, but it is through non-verbal cues. Your job is to learn to listen carefully, so you understand the message.[/alert-note]

Don’t force your dog to eat something. If your dog doesn’t like a treat you give him, let it go. It’s important to take your pets likes and dislikes into consideration and to not push them into anything unnecessary.

Fostering a dog teaches you about the responsibilities of dog ownership. Many animals need love and care. Fostering a dog will both help the cause and allow you to test drive the responsibility involved with pet ownership.

If you are in the market for a pedigree pup, you just may find him at the pound. A lot of dog owners leave their pet at the pound if they do not want them or cannot keep them. Speak to the nearest pound to see if an option suits you. This can help save the life of a beautiful dog.

[alert-note]TIP! Be wary about certain flea treatments to use for your dog. They contain carcinogens proven to cause cancer in kids.[/alert-note]

It’s said that humans can read dog feelings by just looking at their faces; after years of human/dog interactions, that is no surprise. This article has provided you a piece of knowledge which goes even deeper than that. You and your dog will benefit greatly from that fact.

Almost all dogs shed hair, so dealing with it is a serious question for a great number of dog owners. I want to look at this problem in two ways – prevention and cleaning up. Having the problem of dog hair solved in your home means that you have one less thing to concern yourself with, and maybe make life a little easier on yourself. So you have a dog that sheds hair (poodle owners talk amongst yourselves for a while!) the question is what can you do about it. As I said, I want to tackle this in two phases: Phase 1 – prevention, and Phase 2 – clean up.

Prevention

You cannot stop your dog from shedding hair, but you can minimize it. The secret to prevention is frequent and proper grooming. There are several tools that can be useful here. They are specific to the size of your dog, but since you are on this site, I think that its fair to assume that your dog is on the small side of the scale. That being the case, there are a few recommendations that I can give, based on feedback I have received from enthusiastic dog owners across a variety of breeds.

The furminator is probably the best-known solution to shedding hair, and with good reason. They have a variety of products based on the size of your dog and the length of hair – all of which are listed and available here. At the time of writing, they are reduced in price by almost 50% so now would be the time to get one. They have some guidelines on use, which are important to read. The instructions are listed here too, so have look if you want!

There are some dogs, however, who cannot stand the rake type brushes. Sometimes it’s due to the previous trauma of an owner who was far too heavy handed with it, other times sometimes they just hate the sensation of hair being potentially tugged. But whatever the reason, if your dog dislikes the rake style solution then its just not going to work for you. Thankfully there is another solution – the rubber brush! This type of brush is designed primarily for skin massage, but it also removes dirt and loose hair. It can be used with your dog being wet or dry. The soft massage feel of the brush means you will struggle to find a dog that does not enjoy the sensation. It is, however not quite as efficient as a good rake style brush when it comes to hair removal, but it’s still pretty good. It’s certainly better than nothing… and as I say, your dog is going to love it.

Its also important that you bathe your dog regularly to help with getting rid of shedding hair. A good combination of regular baths and grooming will dramatically reduce your dog’s shedding around your home.

Clean up

As I said, there is no technique or solution that will completely get rid of your dog’s shedding problem. So you will always need to be involved in some cleanup operation. As you will have noticed, a standard vacuum cleaner will struggle to deal with pet hair on soft furnishing (unless you have this vacuum cleaner of course)

A much more affordable alternative to the Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner is something like this rubber bristled brush. At around ten times cheaper, it’s not quite as effective but it sure does work. It’s decent for cleaning up on hard floors, carpets, and even soft furnishings.

Do you have any hints or tips on how to deal with shedding dog hairs? Why not share them with the community in the comments section, I just know that we would all love to hear them!

Debates will always rage between owners of various small breeds as to what specific breed makes the best all round pet. Of all the small breed owners, there are few more passionate about their dogs than the owners of pugs and dachshunds. So we felt like we had to ask the tough question ( with our tongues firmly in our cheeks) – why do Pugs make so much better pets than Dachshunds?

Firstly let me say this – we love dachshunds. We really do. They are amazing dogs. But then so are Pugs. So we wanted to write an article from the perspective of those who are mad about their pugs. I have no doubt at all that there will be an article in the future from the doxie owners.

Pugs are so ugly they are cute

Different dogs have their own personalities, and dachshunds are not short on personality. But look at a pug for a second and tell me that they are not something special?!?! I like to call a spade a spade, so I am comfortable saying that pugs are not pretty creatures. But that does not mean they are not cute. In fact, they are sooooo ugly that they transcend the whole thing and become utterly adorable in a way that a pretty animal could never manage.

Pugs love hugs

Dachshunds may enjoy the occasional cuddle, but what non pug owners need to understand is that hugs are hardwired into Pugs. Pugs literally need hugs and cuddles and affection. It keeps them calm and centers them. Most dogs are in some way independent, but Pugs., Pugs are not that. For some, this may well be a downside, but for us, this is an incredible plus point. Why? Because we love our doggie hugs too!

Pugs don’t walk

This final point will divide people depending on how active they are. Some people love having dogs for the long treks in the countryside. Others prefer a more sedate lifestyle. If you are the latter, then you have just found the dog of your dreams, because Pugs do not walk. I mean of course they can literally walk, but they do not like to. In fact, its not advisable to walk a Pug for any distance. Its actually not good for them. No, a Pug would rather be sitting on some luxurious pillow being gently stroked by its owner. So if you favor a laid back life, without the hassles of long walks outside, then Pugs are absolutely for you!

Picking the perfect small dog breed as a pet is a subjective thing. Its more about matching the personality of the dog to the owner. But for many, the personality and attitude of the Pug make them the ultimate pet. What do you think about the debate between Pugs and Dachshunds? Which do you prefer? Tell us in the comments.

Dental hygiene is so important to your dog. Looking after the teeth of your dog is a vital role of any responsible dog owner. But not everyone knows how to best look after their dog’s teeth, with a shocking 85% of all dogs in the US having dental problems, I want to bring to you a simple 4 step plan to good doggie dental health.

Dogs need their teeth. You might think that your teeth are important to you, but that’s nothing compared to how important they are for your dog. Remember dogs don’t have hands, so they carry everything with their teeth – from new born pups to the morning newspaper – everything goes in their mouths. And don’t forget eating. You and I have the luxury of a knife and fork so we can get our food bite size before it goes in our mouth. Once again, all the dog has are its teeth. I am sure that you get the idea. So here is a simple guide to keeping your dog’s teeth in tip top condition.

Brush your dogs teeth regularly

Does this go without saying? Perhaps, but this would be a pretty bad article if I didn’t at least mention it. As with humans, dogs really ought to have their teeth brushed daily. In the real world, I know that lots of people struggle with this frequency. But that’s the recommendation. Do your best to meet it. The more you brush your dog’s teeth, the less it will struggle over time as it gets used to it.

Remember that dogs need their own toothpaste – the stuff that you or I use will only make them sick. And if you invest in a decent dog tooth brush, you will find things are a whole lot easier.

Check their mouths often Gum infections show as red areas of the gum

You should check your dogs mouths once a week. A check only takes a moment, so is not too time consuming for anyone. You want to look for red spots on the gums, or any kind of swelling. While you are there, you should check your dogs breath. if it smells worse than unusual then that’s a sign of tooth decay. If you suspect any issues then get your dog to a vet for a professional assessment. Remember that early identification will minimize any issues. This step is key in the dental health of your dog.

Feed them properly

A good diet will do more than just help your dogs weight; it makes a big difference to their teeth too. Human food should never be served to your dog, especially anything processed. These things are full of sugar and will not help your dogs teeth one little bit. Feeding your dog properly should allow you to prevent dental issues from arising in the first place. This is important for your dog’s teeth. Plus, small breeds especially will benefit from having a proper diet since smaller dogs need to monitor their weight much more closely than bigger animals. Breeds like dachshunds and pugs need to have a carefully controlled diet for this reason. Weight issues can increase a dachshunds likelihood of spinal issues, and pugs breathing can be affected too.

Dental chews really help

Dental chews are readily available and do not cost very much at all. You can get plastic dental chews, or if you prefer something more natural, the consensus is that antler horns make the best dental chews. You can get dental treats (edible dental chews) but they can be a problem if you are concerned about your dog’s weight. Dental chews can even be flavored to make them more appealing to your dog. They work by essentially grating against your dog’s teeth, and can make a noticeable difference to your dog’s dental health. But remember that they are not a substitute for brushing.

What ever type of dog you have, you need to ensure that their teeth are well maintained. Its the responsibility of the owner and not the dog to ensure this. Dental issues can lead to all kinds of bigger problems as your dog wont chew food properly which can cause all sorts of gastric conditions. Not to mention the day to day issues your dog will face not being able to carry all those things that it other wise would. It doesn’t take much to look after your dogs teeth, so please take a little time and help your dog.

If you are anything like most of the other dog owners out there and me, you will have bought toy after toy for your beloved pooch, only to have the toys rejected for some old thing that’s falling apart. It’s more than just a frustration – broken toys represent real choking hazards for your dog.

If you want to know why they do that, and how to stop it, then read below. This could, in all honesty, save your dog from choking to death one day. Recent studies have shed some light on the way that dogs think about their toys. The study took place in the UK and included 16 Labrador Retrievers (apparently selected for their natural playfulness) those dogs almost entirely favored certain toys over all others.

In trying to pull apart a reason for this pattern, the researchers came up with the following reasoning.

“Dogs perceive toys in the same way that wolves perceive prey; they prefer toys that either taste like food or can be torn apart” Quote taken from the article “Habituation and dishabituation during object play in kennel-housed dogs.”

In other words, dogs want toys that remind them/fool them into thinking that they are hunters, and the toys are the prey. Soft toys, or things that make noise, that the dog can feel being destroyed in their teeth are always going to win when it comes to the favorite toy contest.

But toys that feel like they are destroyed between the teeth of your dog have a nasty habit of breaking… quickly. Often the more robust toys are left gathering dust as your pet pooch is gleefully destroying the softer toys.

How can you combat this Dog toy favoritism?

There are things that you can do to combat this. Two things actually. There are what I like to call the ‘pretend its alive’ technique, and the ‘hide it, so the dog forgets about it’ technique.

The ‘Pretend its Alive’ Dog Toy Technique

This is such a simple thing to do, many of you probably do it automatically. But if you have a robust toy that is being ignored, then you can play with it with your dog. Hold one end of it and let the dog fight for it. If you can get your dog to bite on to one end of the toy, then you can try and wrestle it from the dog. If you think back to the whole ‘Your dog thinks that its prey’ concept, then pulling one end of it and fighting against your dog a bit will trick your dog into thinking the prey is alive (yes, even if its just a rope toy).

‘Hide It, so The Dog Forgets About It’

This technique is, at its core, the idea of not giving your dog all its toys at once. You should keep most of the toys in a box or drawer somewhere that your dog cannot access. Switching out favorite toys in place of more robust ones (perhaps even utilizing the previous technique to generate interest) will keep your dog interested in different toys. Switching out toys regularly will keep your dog interested and save it from getting bored with the same old toys.

There is a danger with the naturally favored toys of your dog, and that’s the fact that broken toys can present a danger to your pet. Choking hazards are potentially fatal so its important to keep on top of your dog’s toys. Its no exaggeration to say that these simple little steps could potentially save your dog’s life.
