Sorry, I have not posted in a few days. Just when I thought my life was slowing down a little, it goes into overdrive. I am just thankful that I am able to keep going and doing all the things that are put before me…..

I hope you will see something that you will want to try from these “Finds” that I am loving these days.

If you like orange flavored treats or “Dreamsicle Popsicle”, you are going to love these Pillsbury Orangesicle cookies. I like them hot and then I like them cold (after they have been in the refrigerator overnight). Walmart is where I have been finding these….

And, to “top off” those wonderful cookies…..You can spread some of this Orangesicle Frosting on top. Seriously, when these are cold, you think you are eating a Popsicle.

I love lotion and don’t feel complete unless I have it on. On the other hand, my girls have to be made to put it on…. That is until I discovered this spray on lotion made by Vaseline. This is the next best thing to ‘spray on’ sunscreen. You will love it. You can find this at pretty much any store or pharmacy type store.

Some days, I wish I had never stumbled upon this and I have a good friend to blame for that happening. If you like almonds, soy sauce and the ‘kick’ of wasabi, you will LOVE the Blue Diamond Almonds (BOLD-Wasabi & Soy Sauce). Walmart is where I have found it but some weeks they have the small bags and then some weeks, they have the larger bags. Great snack!

Rain Boots have become a ‘must have’ for most of us girls but the ones that we see in stores are the cute patterns (that you have a hard time deciding which ones you want to buy). I love these SOLID pink and green rain boots that you can find at CVS. Those Kelly Green ones make me smile. Did I mention that they are $10.00?

I have told you before that I love the Brookside Dark Chocolate Blueberries and Pomegranates. Well, I have found a new one that I like just as well. This is the Dark Chocolate Goji with Raspberry. If you are not sure what Goji is, the best way to describe it, is it is like a cranberry (at least that is my definition of it). You can find these at CVS and I have not found them anywhere else.

When Hardees is mentioned at our house, it is for breakfast but that has changed for me. I have found a ‘fast food’ Turkey Burger that I love and it is at Hardees. It comes on a wheat bun and I like mine with just lettuce and mustard but there are numerous ways you can get it. You need to give them a try. They are made fresh and HOT too.

This is not exactly a “Find” except for I did “find’ out some news that I wanted to share regarding The Clay Pot’s ferns.

Mark, with The Clay Pot, will have his first load of ferns in next week. If you are interested in ‘pre-ordering‘, you may call him at 259-2277.

He will have the following:

3 Gallon Macho Ferns

10 Inch Hanging Basket Macho Ferns

10 Inch Hanging Basket Boston Ferns, Asparagus Ferns & Sun Ferns

3 Gallon Sun Ferns

If you have never had a fern from The Clay Pot, you will want one this year. They are not only great looking but they are so healthy too.

Until next time….

There are many places in Scottsboro and Jackson County that are not that ‘well known’ to a lot of people but there is one place that you can be pretty sure of that is familiar to everyone…. Even kids. That place is the Jackson County Courthouse. I thought I would share a little interesting information about this building that we just assume has been in the middle of our square since the beginning of time and how it became the permanent county seat.

Following is from the book written by Mr. Jerry Gist, The Story of Scottsboro, Alabama.

“The court met on September 10, to select the spot for the county courthouse in Scottsboro. Andy Whitworth and G.W. Stovall were appointed to supervise the project. A special term of the court was convened at Bellefonte on October 12, 1868, whereby they instructed the judge of probate to add the sum of 25% on all license and revenue collected by him to be set aside as a fund for the construction of the courthouse and jail.

The regular term met on Monday, November 9, 1868, and ordered county records to be moved from Bellefonte to Scottsboro. These records were moved on Friday, November 13, 1868, at a cost of fifteen dollars.

Plans of A.M. Bradley for building the courthouse were adopted on January 4, 1869, and the next day he was employed for seventy-five dollars per month to supervise the building of the courthouse. The contract to build the courthouse was made with John D. Boren of Stevenson on March 9, 1869. The building which would cost $24,500.00 was to be completed by December 1, 1870. In the spring of 1879, the new courthouse burned and was rebuilt that same year. The original walls were used and nothing was new except the woodwork.

As early as 1909, there was some talk of building a new courthouse. Judge J.B. Hackworth and the commissioners decided to renovate the courthouse, using the old walls. The work of dismantling the old courthouse began in May, 1912. An architectural engineer, R.H. Hunt of Chattanooga, condemned the original walls, and after much discussion and some delay, the commissioners decided to tear away the old walls and build a new courthouse.

From the northeaster part of the county there was a great deal of opposition to the building of a new courthouse. Citizens of Bridgeport, Bass, and surrounding communities held a mass meeting at Stevenson. W.W. Wann was made secretary of a committee that was formed at this meeting. This committee requested the commissioners not to build a courthouse at Scottsboro. They proposed that the people of the county be allowed to vote on the place where the new courthouse should be built. Lawrence Cooper of Huntsville was employed to investigate the legal status of the courthouse controversy.

Another attempt by the citizens of Stevenson to sercure the courthouse was a petition circulated throughout the county. In reference to this, the following article was taken from the Stevenson Chronicle June 13, 1912:

“The following is a duplicate of the petition that is being mailed to each voting precinct in Jackson County for qualified voters to sign for the purpose of calling an election to move the courthouse from Scottsboro to Stevenson:

TO HIS EXCELLENCY
EMMETT O’NEAL
GOVERNOR OF THE

STATE OF ALABAMA

“The undersigned, who are qualified electors of the County of Jackson, State of Alabama, respectfully represent that a courthouse has not been built in a said county within the past twenty years, or more: that Stevenson, in said county is thriving progressive town, and is more suitable for the county seat than the town of Scottsboro, the present county seat: and that it is desirable to change said county seat from Scottsboro to Stevenson. WHEREFORE, petitioners pray that you may order an election to be held throughout the said county of Jackson, for the purpose of determining whether the county seat shall be removed from the town of Scottsboro to the town of Stevenson.”

On June 19, 1912, Stevenson and Bridgeport filed a bill in chancery court to cancel the contract to build the courthouse at Scottsboro. Chancellor W.H. Simpson rendered a decree favorable to Scottsboro as follows:

“Upon due consideration, thereof, it is the opinion of the court that the said demurrer is well taken. It is, therefore, ordered, adjudged and decreed by the court that the said demurrer to the original bill as amended be, and the same is hereby sustained. It is further ordered that the complainants have fifteen days from this date in which to amend their bill as they may be advised. Rendered on July 1, 1912.”

After Judge Simpson’s degree, the courthouse construction was resumed at Scottsboro on July 16, 1912,”

Until next time, I hope you enjoyed learning or maybe just being reminded of how Scottsboro became the permanent county seat.

Before I begin today’s post, I wanted to tell you that I have made a big decision (after much thought, prayers and consideration) to no longer have advertisers (the ones who pay) on my purse. My life seems to be busier than ever, like most everyone’s is these days. I was finding myself not having time to gather information, take photos and do what I felt I was suppose to do for my advertisers.

With that said, I do plan to continue to give ‘shout outs’ to local businesses, churches, groups/organizations, schools, etc. so know you are still going to be able to hear about my ‘finds’ and events that are going on in town. I will also make sure you know of any ‘beneficial news’ that will help save you a dime or maybe save you some stress to deal with.

So please continue to send me news, information, ‘finds’ or good deals on items or services that you would want to know about if you did not already.

I am so grateful for the advertisers that allowed me to share their business with everyone on my ‘purse’. I look forward to continuing on with my purse posts and sharing history and news with you all. After four years of having Penny’s Purse, I still cannot believe that I have new ‘readers’ sign up for Penny’s Purse each week after. I am grateful that I have this opportunity to talk about wonderful places, people, events, goods that have to do with this place I call home, Scottsboro and Jackson County.

Now, I want to share some history with you.

“On July 28, 1954, bids were received at the Scottsboro City Hall for a new thirty-five bed Jackson County Hospital.

H.O. Bynum and children donated a seven acre tract of land in southwest Scottsboro for the location of the hospital.

Financing for the project was a combined effort by the city, state, and federal governments. Scottsboro provided approximately $220,000 by a four-mill ad valorem tax levied several years prior for the specific purpose of building and maintaining a hospital.

The state and federal governments provided $60,000 and $350,000 respectively under the Hill-Burton Act.

In August, 1955, the Jackson County Hospital Board consisting of Dr. E. Julian Hodges, chairman; Dr. M.H. Lynch, Dr. E.L. Trammell, Judge John Snodgrass, George Browning, Dr. E.A. Browder, John Tally, Joe Dawson, and H.O. Bynum announced the formal opening of the new hospital for August 28, 1955.

An estimated five-thousand persons were present on dedication day. Senator Lister Hill delivered the key note address and Miss Jesse Sue Bynum cut the ribbon which officially opened the new $500,000 structure.

First patients were admitted on September 1, 1955. Ralph Hart was selected as the first administrator of the hospital.”

Until next time…

If you love Hot Dogs with that wonderful Red Slaw, you need to try Pikeville Store. I know most people go there for their million dollar Cheeseburger Baskets but if you are a “Red Slaw” lover like myself, you need to give the hot dog a try next time you are there.

Also, who does not like the ‘pellet’ ice that Pikeville Store has for their drinks….

You can now buy a bag of that to take home with you for only $1.50 a bag. You cannot beat that for price and most importantly to enjoy.

Until next week…Will have you some more ‘history’ of this place we call home.

I thought it was time for me to share some more of my wonderful “Finds” with you so I hope you see something that you put on your next grocery list….

If you like S’mores, then you are going to like Pillsbury Toaster Strudel (S’mores). These are only available for a limited time so make sure you get to enjoy them what this flavor is out in the stores. Walmart is where you can find these.

I would have to say that this is my new cereal ‘find’ but really it is my Jimmy’s new favorite breakfast food. Blueberry Special K is the name of this cereal. We get this at Piggly Wiggly. I have not been able to find it at Walmart but they may have it but just out when I am there.

If you have not had the pleasure of eating some of Big Marv’s BBQ, you are missing out. Big Marv’s is located on Highway 35 (on the right, before you turn to go up Skyline Mountain) but beginning this week, you will be able to enjoy some of that BBQ at their “traveling” lunch cart.

The Big Marv’s ‘lunch cart’ will be located on Willow Street (across from Family Dollar and beside the Scottsboro WSG Warehouse). They will be there every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. til 2:00 p.m.

Another convenient option for lunch on the go…..

Don’t let the name of this product stop you from reading further….. This big sexy hair (dry shampoo) is by far one of my favorite finds lately. I wash my hair every day and sometimes twice a day. Well, a friend of mine told me about this dry shampoo, and how my life has been made easy on some mornings. You spray this on your hair (close to roots) and leave in for two minutes then brush. You will be shocked at how it makes your hair go from flat and drab to full and shiny. Not only do I use it but my girls use it too. Makes our lives a lot easier on those mornings where ‘time’ is of essence.

You can get this at many salons but you can also get it at Walmart Salon and is $17.95. It will be the best $20.00 that you have spent when it comes to hair.

Until next time…

I have been having this crazy ‘addiction’ (that is what I am calling it these days) of looking through old Annuals (High School Yearbooks). My girls love looking at how people (adults) they know now, looked ‘back then’. So, after they are through looking, I find myself going through them and I have to say it has been very entertaining.

I thought I would share a few photos that were in a 1985 Annual from Scottsboro High School. These were photos that I either had forgot about the places or ones that I just found interesting in their own way.

I bet many of you remember Lorch’s Diamond Shop that was located on the North side of the square. This was always a neat jewelry shop and I always thought it was such a neat looking store when I was growing up. I am not sure if it was the “Jail Bars” (that is what I would refer to them as) that were to the left of the store front or just the burgundy color of the outside of the store.

I am sure many of you also are familiar with the Gold Lance Class Rings that could be purchased here.

How I remember this car dealership…. Eager Beaver which was located where High Country is located today. They used to have a Beaver costume that someone would wear and walk around the car lot and you would also see the “Eager Beaver” in parades, ballgames, etc.

I love this old photo of Trammell Stadium. I looks so big from the air. What great memories this football stadium and track have brought to so many people.

I do remember The Jackson County Bank but I thought this ad in the Annual was interesting. Notice the Bank hours. They were open Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. t0 3:00 p.m. On Thursday and Saturday, they were open from 9:00 a.m. to noon and then on Friday they were open for business from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. I suppose the old saying, “Bankers hours” refers to when banks were open these hours each week.

Make sure to notice also that this was “Jackson County’s First 24-Hour Teller”. I am sure that was really a big deal back then and made this bank a place for many to use because of that service.

I do not remember when Maples (the main plant, located on Willow Street) look like this…. How times have changed and definitely for the better when it comes to Maples and how they have provided Jackson County with employment for so many people.

I can so remember learning to type on the huge electric typewriters. I honestly believe learning to type is like riding a bike…. After you learn, you never forget. I laugh thinking about how the kids today would look at the piece of equipment and be scared to death.

Until next time….

There are many things that we all take for granted and most of those are those ‘necessities’ (or we believe they are a ‘must’) that have been around as long as we can remember. I thought I would share when some of those became a part of Scottsboro and how that took place.

“A $180,000 sewage disposal plant for Scottsboro was completed in December, 1951. The system, erected by Construction Corporation of Birmingham, was built to be utilized by a maximum of 7,500 inhabitants with a design which could be expanded for use by 15,000.”

I realize many of you remember when ‘sewage systems’ were not around but as for me, I cannot imagine not having that “luxury”. I have lived at a home where there was a septic tank but to think of not having a sewage disposal plant really could make you loose your appetite.

“An announcement was released on June 1, 1960, that the Community Facilities Administration had approved a loan of $1,300,000 for the construction of a natural gas transmission and distribution system. Natural gas was turned on in Scottsboro on August 17, 1961.”

I will be the first to admit that I am a big natural gas fan for several reasons. The first being, that is where my Jimmy works and I like him to have a job. But I will tell you that there is nothing better than to have ‘instant’ heat on those cold mornings or nights. There is no exaggeration when I say you can have a room warmed up in a matter of a few minutes with natural gas. I also love that when the power goes out (like a few years ago, when we had no electricity for several days), I can still cook and have hot water because of those two words… Natural Gas.

“On April 20, 1959, an advisory election was held in Scottsboro for the purpose of permitting or denying the city council to proceed in negotiations to secure water for the city from the Tennessee River. The city voted in favor of the plan by a vote of 242 to 5.

Scottsboro had been securing water from an inadequate water system which was installed in 1913.

Prior to 1953, the only source of the city water supply was from five small mountain streams. The water was pumped into the water system for purification and distribution.

In 1953, two wells were drilled in order to increase the city’s diminishing water supply. Only one of these wells could be used because of the high gaseous and mineral content of the water.

With the assistance of the United States Geological Survey Department four more wells were drilled in 1957 in northeastern Scottsboro. The best of these wells produced only twenty gallons per minute.

Two additional, and just as unsuccessful wells, were drilled in southeastern Scottsboro in 1958.

After the citizens overwhelmingly approved, Mayor John T. Reid and the city council began taking action by establishing a Water Supply Board. The board, consisting of O.L. Chambers, chairman; Rudolph Jones and John C. Harris, would be incorporated and would issue bonds and supervise construction and operation of the new facility.

The board would sell water to the Scottsboro Water Board for distribution. Bids were let for the the $800,000 project on December 1, 1959. Construction began several weeks afterwards by Dethlefs and Hannon of Anniston, Alabama, and was completed in March, 1961.

Scottsboro began receiving water from the Tennessee River in April, 1961, R.A. Smith was placed in charge of the plan, and James Starnes was selected as superintendent of the water system.”

I will also admit that I had never really thought about when Scottsboro was fortunate enough to have water in ‘abundance’ and to have a system, people, equipment that make it run accurately and smoothly. It really is hard to believe that all of this took place just a little over 50 years ago.

If you have anything to add to any of the above, please share with me at pennyg@scottsboro.org

Today is an ‘easy read’ but has so many memories for me. Sometimes I forget about a particular place that I LOVED to go to when I was young, but then a see an old photo and the memories start flowing.

I hope these photos will do the same for you.

I LOVED the Berry Patch which was located in the Derrick’s Mini Mall (where you can find Country Cottage and Bounce Hair Salon now). I can remember the yellow drawstring plastic shopping bags with the ‘berry’ symbol and name on it. There was NEVER a time that I did not want to make a stop here. Very thankful that my mom loved it too.

I always thought this building was the neatest looking thing on Broad Street. I never went inside it but I can remember going past it and always made a point to ‘check it out’ each time. Do you remember when All State (think it was Hollice Kendrick’s business location) was located here? I have to wonder what the reasoning, inspiration, logic was behind the design of this building….

Do you remember what this building used to be home to? I will tell you that it is located on Broad Street and the other hint is…..Broad Street Church of Christ.

This was where GTE General Telephone Office was located MANY years ago.

I just smile when I look at this old photo of Belk Hudson and all the wonderful memories that I have of this place (The Rock Church is located in this building now) from years gone by. I remember where every department was…. Jewelry/Accessories in front/middle, Women’s Department on the left, Men’s Department on the right, Shoe Department at the back and Home goods, restrooms and Office in the back right corner. I cannot remember what I wore yesterday but I can remember Belk Hudson like I was in there shopping this morning.

This is another store that I miss and every time I pass by there (this is the vacant building beside KMart), I think how sad it is to have that wasted space not being used for something useful to everyone. Food World was one of my favorite grocery stores and I loved how the end of the buggy’s would fold down so you could just ‘slide’ the goods out at the checkout counter.

Lizard Thicket was another favorite place to shop for clothes when I was younger. The ‘look’ on the inside was so casual and I can ‘see’ the dressing rooms clearly with the fabric hanging as doors. This was the place that you got your sunglasses, swimsuits and jeans for sure along with many other good ‘stylish’ clothes.

If anyone ever should ask me if there was a store that I was thankful to have while growing up but no longer open, Woolworth would definitely be at the top of the list. There were so many things I love about this store… including the ‘turning bars’ that you would go through when you entered the store. I also love the cafeteria that was located inside the building. You could sit in booths to eat or my favorite was to eat at the bar while sitting on one of the stools.

I guess you could say this is a good example of the ‘little things’ bring much happiness in ones life. Memories of people, events and places are something that no one can take from you and for that I am thankful for the memories, stories and visions of the above places.

I have had server problems with my site this week so I am just getting to post for the first time in several days. Thank you for being patient with me and ‘technology’.

I wanted to share a few old photos that I borrowed from some Facebook friends. I am so thankful for parents, grandparents, etc. who were smart enough and took the time to save old newspaper clippings, photos from the past so that 50 years later, they could still be enjoyed by many.

Following are some that brought back some good memories for me. Thank to Caroline Lynch Minor for the photos.

I can remember seeing houses being moved down the street and always brought excitement to anyone who was on the road as a house was being brought down a street. I love all the street signs and how close the buildings look to be to the streets. This was on Willow Street (or I think) when it was 4-lanes.

“These houses had been located facing Mary Hunter Ave. behind the house I grew up in on East Willow Street. They had been sold, and the new owner was having them moved to a new location. I believe this photo was taken in the early 1970′s.”

I don’t think that I go a week without thinking about this place, Lay’s …. It may be when I am driving by Akin’s Furniture (which was the building that used to ‘house’ Lay’s), or thinking about the best slaw dog in town and a Coke Icee…. I have so many wonderful memories of this store.

One of my favorite memories is when you could get the baby chickens at Easter. Those are the days that I will always cherish.

I love this old photo that Bill Talley shared on FB a while back. I love it for many reasons. One being that there is still some snow on the ground and then the buildings that he is standing in front of is on the property that we all know as the “old” Page School… on of my favorite buildings in Scottsboro.

Following are some of the ‘memories’ and ‘history of this photo:

“February, 1958. That’s me behind a pile of snow on the ground. What’s known now as the Carter Gymnasium would soon be built where the old girl’s gym appears in this picture. The field where I’m standing was used for football practice.”

“Wish that building were still standing so we could still enjoy its architectural lines and features.”

Facing the entrance to the gym, the band room was in a single-story room on the left. It’s a weight room now. The really old band room was in the very back of what’s now known as the O’Brian Gym.”

“Noticed in the background by Obrien gym that what looks to be a coal truck unloading coal for heating the buildings.”

The Toad Stool have already started getting in their spring and summer clothes for the kids and these are just a few of my favorites for the boys. I love the shorts/shirt set and then the shark John John is reversible. If you have little boys to buy for, don’t count on these cute clothes being there in a month or two. These will go fast. Did I mention that Greta has Layaway available for you at The Toad Stool.

Thousands of families across Alabama are eligible for low-cost or free health insurance for their children and don’t know it. Children without health insurance may be able to receive health and medical services through ALLKids (Children’s Health Insurance Program) or Medicaid. Both programs cover a wide range of services including regular checkups, dental care, eye exams, and glasses, too.

Highlands Medical Center is doing their part in helping Jackson County resident’s easily enroll their children for health insurance. A free standing enrollment device is now available anytime in the lobby of Highlands Medical Center Emergency Department. It only takes five-minutes and you can do it yourself.

“We hope with the free standing device, families will feel more comfortable enrolling, it is very easy to navigate,” says Jennifer McCurdy, marketing manager at Highlands Medical Center. “Highlands will continue to offer services to assist with insurance options for adults through our billing department.”

Don’t wonder if you can afford insurance for your children, find out! You may also enroll at www.alaaccess.com or call 888.752.2731

I have not shared some “finds” lately, so I decided this is a perfect time. Seeing that it has rained non-stop for DAYS now and there is not much you can do outside, I thought you might want to shop and try out some of my “finds” to see if you like them yourself.

This Dasani Pineapple Coconut Drops I cannot say enough good things about. I have these bottles everywhere (purse, work, home, car) and I have been putting them in my water for over two months and have not even thought about getting tired of them. Zero calories. You can get about 32 servings out of one bottle.

I have a lamp similar to this and when I saw these I knew I wanted to share. They have these at Family Dollar and would go great in a rustic room, lake house or porch. They have canvas material around them. Different style lamp….

These Spicy Buffalo Wheat Thins are my girls favorite new cracker. They fight over who gets the last few in the box. If you like wings or just spicy food, you will love these. No dips needed either. Perfect to eat straight out of box.

i finally got lucky and received a Keurig Coffee Maker for Christmas and it has definitely been one of my favorite gifts. Since I am the only ‘coffee drinker’ in my house, I have been trying different hot chocolates for Jimmy and the girls. They have decided that the Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate is the best. You can find this at Walmart.

If you have not heard by now, Scottsboro High School has a new Football Coach, Patrick Nix. What many of you may not know is that he has written a book and you can purchase one by going here on Amazon.

I could think of a thousand ways to use the ‘tinsel’ hearts that I found at Family Dollar (on Willow Street). You could put several together to make a big puffy wreath for your door. They are only $1.00 each so you cannot pass up a good these days that is that cheap.

I had a friend give me one of the Fleece Heated Blanket and it is wonderful, especially for cold nights like we are about to have next week. It is the perfect size and you can regulate what ‘hotness’ you want at any given time. These make great gifts too for any age. The colors are great too. You can find these at Walmart.

Purse Advertisers:

Stacy Ledwell, owner of Mr. Rooter Plumbing in Scottsboro strives to provide the very best when it comes to service. His philosophy says it all to me and I think you will agree. Also, after you have used Mr. Rooter Plumbing one time, I am pretty sure you will be calling on them again.

Mr. Rooter plumbers work extremely hard to deliver the highest level of customer service- it’s their #1 priority. In fact, they actually call it “World Class Customer Service” because they truly believe it is unmatched in the plumbing industry. It all starts when you call their office.

They know that when you have a plumbing emergency, the last thing you want to deal with is an unfriendly person on the other end of the phone. They promise to greet you with a warm friendly voice that will understand your situation, make you a priority and schedule an appointment time that fits your schedule.

I don’t think I will ever get tired of festive flags to hang outside. I love these Valentine Flags that The Clay Pot has hanging outside. These are just a few of the very cute flags that you can find here.

There is nothing better than to drive by a home and see a pretty wreath or flag on the front porch. It just says, “A loved home”.
