Penn State Wrestling, 2009: Cael Sanderson declares 'We can create a dynasty here'

In April 2009 Troy Sunderland resigned as Penn State's wrestling coach.

Penn State was ready to hire Cornell coach Rob Koll, the son of legendary Penn State coach Bill Koll.

Then Cael Sanderson called Penn State and everything changed.

Cael understood that Penn State was a sleeping giant, the biggest university in the nation's most talent-rich state...

"It's like if I was a football coach with a chance to go to Texas where all the great players are, where they have the best facilities, and where the fans support you to this incredible level."

Cael's goals were bold. He was focused on National Championships, plural...

"It's the mark of a program, and it shows that you got a group of guys together and they shared in a common goal. It's something I have missed.

"I don't only want one of them. I want a bunch of them like the University of Iowa. I believe I'm in the right place for that to happen."

When Cael sat down with WPSU's Kellie Goodman (video below) he didn't mince words...

"If we do things the right way, with a lot of hard work and a little luck I think we can really create a dynasty here."

It's safe to say the Penn State Wrestling Dynasty has arrived!

2013 NCAA Wrestling: Penn State takes razor-thin lead into Championship matches

Penn State stands of the precipice of claiming their third consecutive NCAA Wrestling Championship, but victory is anything but assured.

Penn State takes a three-point lead (114.5 to 111.5) into tonight's Championship matches. ESPiN will carry the action live at 8 PM Eastern.

For those of you unfamiliar with tournament wrestling scoring, each of tonight's individual Champions earns four team points. Additional team points can be earned for a Fall (2 points), Technical Fall (1½ points), or Major decision (1 point).

At first glance Penn State would appear to be in the driver's seat, with the lead and five Championship finalists against just two for Oklahoma State. But the match-ups do not favor the Nittany Lions.

Tonight's matches will begin at 174 pounds instead of the typical 125 pounds. (More on that later.)

Penn State's Matt Brown (33-4) has a chance to end the suspense early. The 2-seed can clinch a Championship for Penn State by defeating Oklahoma State's top-seeded Chris Perry (36-2) in the 174-pound final.

Penn State National Champion Ed Ruth (36-0), the number one seed at 184, will be favored against Lehigh's third-seeded Robert Hamlin (30-3). Ruth defeated Hamlin 11-9 back in November. Ruth will be looking for bonus points. Even a Major decision could be enormous in the team race.

2011 National Champion Quentin Wright (35-0), seeded second, squares off with the top-seeded Defending Champion Dustin Kilgore (47-0) of Kent State in the 197-pound final.

The 125-pound final will be a rematch of a quarterfinal match in the Big Ten Championships. Fourth-seeded Penn State sophomore Nico Megaludis (32-3) was beaten 6-3 by second-seeded Jesse Delgado (29-3) two weeks ago in Champaign.

Undefeated Jordan Oliver (41-0) of Oklahoma State carries a number-one ranking into the 149-pound Championship against second-seeded Jason Chamberlain (34-1) of Boise State

If the seedings hold and there are no bonus points, Penn State will be trailing by one point heading to the 165-pound "Match of the Century."

Cornell's Kyle Dake (40-0) will be gunning for his fourth National Championship...in four different weight classes! His opponent will be Penn State's David Taylor (34-1), the defending 165-pound Champion, whose only loss in the last two years was to Dake. The two battled to a hard-fought 3-2 decision in the finals of the Southern Scuffle earlier this year.

In a rare wise move, the NCAA changed the typical starting point to make this the final match of the Championships.

In the starkest contrast in styles, Dake has not allowed a point during these Championships, but nor has he recorded anything more than a Major Decision. Taylor, but contrast, has pinned all four of his opponents.

During an interview after last night's semi-finals, Taylor promised to push the action and vowed that this would not be another 3-2 match.

Racism has no place at Penn State: Ken Frazier must resign from the Board of Trustees

We were shocked and disgusted by Ken Frazier's racist remarks at the Penn State Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, March 14, 2013 in Hershey.

For the good of the University and the integrity of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Frazier must resign or be removed.

This exchange between Bill Cluck, a candidate for the Board of Trustees who is white, and Ken Frazier, a current Trustee who is black, was recorded by reporter Mike Dawson of the Centre Daily Times...

On Sunday, March 17, 2013, a full three days after Mr. Frazier's racist outburst, he issued an apology of sorts in the Centre Daily Times...

"I hope that people will see my comments for what they were: a momentary lapse in judgment in the heat of frustration, and not a reflection on what I truly believe and stand for. My commitment to racial equality, diversity and social justice is well-established, and deepens my regret that my poorly chosen words have distracted from the important issues at Penn State."

Frazier's claim notwithstanding, how a person acts when faced with "the heat of frustration" truly is "a reflection on what one truly believes and stand for."

Anyone can be polite and have a "commitment to racial equality, diversity and social justice" when nothing is happening, but how does one act when pressed?

Everyone resorts to their core values in the heat of battle. Obviously one of Ken Frazier's core values is to judge people by the color of their skin rather than the content of their character.

It's time for Ken Frazier to resign from both the Penn State Board of Trustees and as CEO of Merck.

2013 Big Ten Wrestling: Penn State Re-repeats! Four Nittany Lions Crowned!

Penn State won its third consecutive Big Ten Wrestling Championship on Sunday at the Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Four Penn State wrestlers won the Championship in their weight class.

David Taylor (165) and Ed Ruth (184) each won their third consecutive Big Ten Championship. Matt Brown (174) and Quentin Wright (197) were also at the top of the podium.

Fun Facts from the 2013 Big Ten Wrestling Championships...

All ten Penn State wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships
Cael Sanderson's wrestlers are now 13-0 in Big Ten Championship matches
Iowa did not have an individual champion for the first time since 2006...and didn't score a single takedown in their four Championship matches!

2013 Big Ten Wrestling Championships: Penn State in position for third straight title

Penn State went 11-3 Saturday night, including 4-2 in semi-final action, to roar into the lead at the 2013 Big Ten Wrestling Championships.

The Nittany Lions are seeking their third consecutive title.

Penn State (123) leads top-ranked Minnesota (112.5). Morning leader Iowa trails by two touchdowns with 109. The upstart Hawkeyes were hurt by a 4-5 performance in the semi-finals.

Today's key Championship matches are #5 Matt Brown vs. #2 Mike Evans (Iowa) at 174; #1 Ed Ruth vs. #2 Kevin Steinhaus (Minnesota) at 184; and #1 Quentin Wright vs. #2 Scott Schiller (Minnesota) at 197.

Penn State's other finalist is David Taylor, who did his best Spider vs. Fly routine in the semi-finals, turning Iowa's Nick Moore at will en route to a 15-0 first-period Technical Fall. Taylor will be heavily favored against #2 Conrad Polz of Illinois.

All ten Penn State wrestlers have qualified for the National Championships in two weeks.

Penn State's six non-finalists will all be wrestling in early action today, which commences at 12:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time:

#2 Nico Megaludis vs. #5 Nikko Triggas (Ohio State) in the consolation semi-finals at 125.

#4 Jordan Conaway vs. #6 Chris Dardanes (Minnesota) in the consolation semi-finals at 133.

#4 Bryan Pearsall vs. #2 Nick Dardanes (Minnesota) in the consolation semi-finals at 141.

#5 Andrew Alton vs. #7 Chris Osterman (Michigan State) in the consolation semi-finals at 149.

#3 Dylan Alton vs. #1 Derek St. John (Iowa) in the consolation semi-finals at 157.

#5 Jimmy Lawson vs. #7 Mike McClure (Michigan State) for Seventh Place at Heavyweight.

The Big Ten Championship matches will be broadcast live by the Big Ten Network at 2:30 (EDT) this afternoon.

Penn State trails upstart Iowa after Session One of the 2013 Big Ten Wrestling Championships. Top-ranked Minnesota is third.

The Nittany Lions (62 points) send six wrestlers to tonight's semi-finals. Iowa (79 points) lost just one wrestler in the Championship bracket this morning and have nine wrestlers vying for a spot in tomorrow's Championship matches. Minnesota (49 points) has five semi-finalists. (Updated brackets here.)

Key matches tonight include #1 David Taylor against #4 Nick Moore (Iowa) and #1 Ed Ruth against # 5 Ethan Lofthouse (Iowa).

Penn State's other semi-finalists are #2 Nico Megaludis against #3 Jesse Delgado (Illinois); #4 Jordan Conaway against #1 Logan Stieber (Ohio State); #5 Matt Brown against Michigan's Dan Yates, an 8-seed who upset #1 Logan Storley of Minnesota in the quarterfinals; and #1 Quentin Wright against #4 Andrew Campolattano (Ohio State).

In the wrestlebacks, #4 Brian Pearsall vs. unseeded Alex Gregory of Indiana; #5 Andrew Alton vs. unseeded Dylan Marriot of Northwestern; #3 Dylan Alton vs. unseeded Tommy Churchard of Purdue; and #7 Jimmy Lawson against #9 Spencer Johnson (Nebraska).

Hockey Valley: Penn State upsets No. 16 Wisconsin!

A number of years ago we purchased football tickets from the University of Illinois and have been on their mailing list ever since.

Unfortunately, the Illini promotions department sent a cringeworthy email in an attempt to sell tickets for next week's Penn State game.

On Wednesday Coach O'Brien appeared at the 2013 Shenango Alumni Society Dinner.

We're grateful that OB has embraced the legacy of Joe Paterno rather than distancing himself from JoePa.

Penn State vs. Notre Dame in Dublin in 2014?

Penn State football coach Bill O'Brien wants to play a game in Ireland.

What better opponent could there be than the Fighting Irish?

Last week at high school coaches event at the Hershey Lodge, O'Brien said, "We are definitely looking into playing in Ireland, no question about it. We're working on an opponent and we're working with the Big Ten on that. So that's something that's definitely in the works."

Could that opponent be Notre Dame?

The 2014 Notre Dame schedule shows an open date on September 20.

Penn State's 2014 schedule has Massachusetts on September 20.

But the UMass schedule shows September 13 as an open date. Penn State is also available on the 13th. It would presumably be feasible to move the game up a week.

If Penn State can work out a game with Notre Dame (or someone else), the likely sight would be Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Proof that Louis Freeh is lying about former Penn State coach Joe Paterno

This morning Louis Freeh defended the "independent" Freeh Report by attacking the Paterno Report. But in the process Freeh got caught up in his own lies.

On page 53 of the Freeh Report we find the following statement...

"The Special Investigative Counsel requested an interview with Paterno in December 2011. Through his counsel, Paterno expressed interest in participating but died before he could be interviewed."

At his subsequent press conference, Freeh said, "We don't have the benefit of having spoken to Mr. Paterno, as I believe he intended to do..."

But in a statement this morning, Freeh made the following claim...

"During the investigation, we contacted Mr. Paterno's attorney in an attempt to interview Mr. Paterno. Although Mr. Paterno was willing to speak with a news reporter and his biographer at that time, he elected not to speak with us."

Was Freeh lying last July when he said Joe was willing to speak with Freeh's investigators or is he lying now in claiming that Joe chose to not speak with them?

The tide is turning as the Paternos fight back!

The next couple days should be very interesting.

At 9 AM (Eastern) Sunday the Paternos will release their exhaustive report at Paterno.com.

At the same time ESPiN's Outside the Lines will discuss the report. Former Pennsylvania Governor and U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh will apparently lead the Paterno's response.

On Monday Katie Couric's exclusive interview with Sue Paterno and her family will be shown on her talk show, katie. Check local listings for air time on ABC affiliates.

It appears that hole has now been filled.

Sources say Marshall University losing new DB coach Anthony Midget to Penn State.

Midget simply couldn't afford to turn Penn State offer down.

Marshall had just hired Midget away from Georgia State on January 28th.

Midget's biography looks promising. He was an All-American defensive back at Virginia Tech and spent time in the NFL.

He played high school football in Florida and has coached in both Florida and Georgia, two states that Penn State is targeting for recruiting.

Tom Dienhart ‏is an Insensitive Creep

Tom Dienhart is a senior writer for the Big Ten Network (BTN.com).

Today on his Twitter page he tweeted:

I suppose it never occurred to Dienhart that Sue Paterno had to work through an enormous period of grief and sadness.

Not only did she lose her beloved husband of 50 years (they were married in 1962), she lost him to a vicious cancer.

Layered on top of that was a period of incredible chaos where Joe was abandoned by many of his closest friends, and vilified in the press for the actions of Jerry Sandusky.

Many concluded that Joe "did not do enough" to stop Sandusky.

Oddly, it seemed unimaginable that anyone could conclude that Joe did not do enough. He lead an exemplary life that was filled with good works and acts of kindness. Sadly, the previous 60 or so years did not seem to influence their conclusions.

I often thought and discussed with friends how much I hoped that someday we would hear from Sue. Quite frankly, I am surprised it is happening now, so soon. I look forward to her interview with Katie Couric.

I think it is safer and kinder to conclude that Sue Paterno is now ready to speak. Too late? You decide.

Joe once said,

He said that when he was 82 years old.

I am looking forward to hearing from Sue.

Maybe Dienhart should have listened first and then reacted.

Penn State Wrestling: It's here, Iowa 2013!

It's finally here, THE dual meet of the year, #1 Penn State (8-0) against #3 Iowa (15-1)!

The Big Ten Network will bring us the action live at 9 P.M. (EST) this evening.

Last Sunday's 33-9 wipeout of Nebraska was supposed to be shown on the Big Ten Network on Wednesday afternoon. Instead we got a basketball replay.

We called BTN for an explanation and a spokesman told us that the microphone had gone out on the high definition camera, so there was no audio available for the replay.

The spokesman said technical challenges happen occasionally with Student U broadcasts. When they are pulled from the lineup it's almost always a quality issue.

As the name implies, these broadcasts are produced by students, sometimes with unintentionally hilarious results.

Penn State Wrestling: Iowa Week 2013!

Fans of Penn State Wrestling have three dates circled on their calendars for the 2012-13 season: the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships (March 21-23), the Big Ten Wrestling Championships (March 9-10), and this Friday night (February 1).

This Friday the undefeated and top-ranked Nittany Lions travel to America's heartland to wrestle against #3 Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The action will be carried live (finally!) on the Big Ten Network at 9 PM Eastern.
