PhillyMag's Biz Philly blog reported on new Penn research suggesting Yelp offers hospital assessments that line up closely with more formal, government-approved appraisals, and may even be more comprehensive in its outlook. Authors Raina M. Merchant, MD, an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine and director of the Penn Social Media and Health Innovation Lab, and Benjamin L. Ranard, a junior fellow at the Penn Social Media and Health Innovation Lab, are quoted in the story.

An article from Medical Ethics Advisor says that according to a recent study comparing the site of death, healthcare utilization, and hospital expenditures for terminally ill cancer patients in seven developed countries, ICU admissions are far more common in the United States than other countries, yet the U.S. has the lowest proportion of in-hospital deaths. Justin E. Bekelman, MD, associate professor in the departments of Radiation Oncology and Medical Ethics and Health Policy, is quoted.

STAT reports on a new Penn study showing that Yelp user reviews of hospitals may be more helpful to consumers than the official nationwide hospital survey, a new study finds. HCAHPS surveys are only given to people admitted to the hospital. On Yelp, researchers found reviews from caregivers and family members who spend time in the hospital with patients, too. Senior author Raina M. Merchant, MD, MSHP, an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine and director of the Penn Social Media and Health Innovation Lab, is quoted.

The New York Times interviewed Daniel Rader, MD, chair of Genetics, for comment on results from a study presented at the American College of Cardiology 65th Annual Scientific Session in Chicago, which examined the use of statins for those with extremely high cholesterol and found that some patients may be statin-intolerant. Rader said he would like to give these patients a clinical trial in which the patient is the only participant, in order to evaluate whether they really are intolerant. Wendy Todd, a patient of Daniel Soffer, MD, an internist and lipidologist, enrolled in a statin intolerance study, taking a statin then switching to placebo after a few weeks, and was surprised to find that she could actually tolerate the statin.

David Casarett, MD, MA, director of Palliative Care, authors a Newsweek opinion piece about the recent national attention on opioid addiction. “Fifteen years ago, a crowd of experts—including many physicians—proclaimed that opioids such as morphine were safe for use in chronic pain,” Casarett said. “We also downplayed the risk of opioid addiction.”

It's estimated that one in six people in the United States use some form of wearable fitness technology. But how does anecdote square up against science in the fitness tracker revolution? Mitesh Patel, MD, MBA, MS, an assistant professor of Medicine and Health Care Management, discusses the trend and what studies on the technology's effectiveness suggest in a segment on The Health Report, a podcast from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

An article from the Daily Local News says mindfulness and meditation have become popular trends in the U.S. as a way to release tensions from the body. Mara Wai, associate director of The Penn Program for Mindfulness, shares her personal experience with mindfulness, and talks about the popularity of Penn's program, which began about 25 years ago when physician Michael Baime, MD, founded it to help support patients with the suffering that comes along with illness.
