In the U.S., we started celebrating Mother’s Day about 150 years ago. Anna Jarvis called it “Mother’s Work Day”. It’s focus was to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community. Her daughter also lobbied to create a special day to honor Mothers.

What can we, as individuals, do to help? Recycling is something each of us can do. If everyone does a little, a lot can be accomplished. Instead of throwing all that paper in the dumpster, recycle it. Recycle all those glass and plastic bottles.

What about your workplace? Most break rooms have stacks of plastic and styrofoam cups for coffee breaks. Imagine how much your business could save if they didn't buy styrofoam cups for a year. Imagine how much less trash would go to the landfill.

Instead, your company could purchase each employee a coffee mug. It can even be personalized with your company logo, or a personalized mug can have each employee's name on it. What a great idea to make your employees feel appreciated, and at the same time, save the expense of plastic and styrofoam cups.

Let's all do our part and "Go Green". Small changes in our everyday life can have an enormous effect.

Quinceanera - A Tradition to Celebrate

The Quinceanera is a ceremony traditional to Mexico, Cuba, Central and South America and Puerto Rico. The ceremony incorporates religious traditions, family virtues, and responsibility of adulthood. On her 15th birthday the Quinceanera celebrates with family and friends the fact that she is leaving childhood behind and entering adulthood as a young lady.

The Quinceanera begins with a religious ceremony and ends with lots of food, music, and dancing. Traditionally, up to 14 people comprise her court, younger girls (her Dama) and younger men (her Chambelan or Escorte or Galan). The Quinceanera makes a total of 15 people. Attire is formal with the young lady wearing a beautiful long gown. Her court is also dressed in gowns and formal attire. Attending guests receive favors of caplas (corsages) and ceramicas (small ceramic clay items). Today, Quinceanera favors may include photo favors of the young lady, or other beautiful keepsakes. During the reception, guests toast the Quinceanera. Guests raise their traditionally decorated glasses and congratulate her on leaving childhood and entering young adulthood. She may be given a doll to remind her of this day and the passing of her childhood.
