Patanjali wrote a book known as the Yoga Sutras (in Ancient India).
In  this book he discusses 5 Yamas (restraints) & 5 Niyamas (observances). They have a similar idea as the 10 commandments & both start with a concept of thou shalt not kill. Only Patanjali takes it much deeper – he says to not cause any trouble to any creature. So where killing is the harshest form of behavior, Patanjali says any form of discord—of bitter heart is not advised.

Then he takes it even further. He admonishes no behaviors that cause trouble, keep pleasing speech as well, and no thoughts that cause trouble (ie, keep harmonious and loving thoughts) (most difficult to follow)

Here are the first 3 Yamas

1. Ahimsa – avoiding causing any trouble to any creature – physically, verbally, mentally.
2. Truth – say what you mean & if you give your word, keep it.
3. Non-Stealing – not desiring other people’s posessions – in action, word & thought. Patanjali Yoga Sutras

The benefits of living these qualities:

1. when ahimsa is established all enmity toward you ends.
2. when truth is established granting rewards for other’s actions is gained.
3. when non-stealing is obtained the world is seen as jeweled
