Happy 5 Year Anniversary to P&B’s Garden Blog

5 Years ago on Mother’s Day, Jennifer created this blog for me. Here I have had a place to post pictures and journal about our garden. Below is a picture of our First Bloom of 2013 in the Rose Garden at P&B Garden, along with an arrangement I made from the blooms and nandina bush for filler. What a great gift that continues to live on. Thank you again Jennifer and Brian for this great idea. Love, Mom

Happy Ten Years at 2537

This Memorial Day weekend we celebrate ten years at 2537 and it is so hard to believe that much time has gone by. When I look around, I sometimes take for granted or forget about all the hard, sweaty work that went into each project. Looking back at all the pictures this morning reminded me of all our accomplishments, not just in the garden, but inside out. I am so fortunate to have Paul and a lovely garden and home to enjoy. I would not have it all of this without all Paul’s hard work, design mastery, vision, and most of all extreme love and patience. Thank you Paul !!

Mama Cardinal and Don Juan

This Mama Cardinal decided to build a nest in our climbing Don Juan rose bush just outside the dining room window. We watched her all day sitting on her nest protecting her eggs. I took this picture through our window.

Spring Has Sprung

Brian visited a rose garden, Parque del Rosedal at Plaza Holanda in Buenos Aires, Argentina and took a few pictures for me.

Here was Brian’s favorite Rose ! Charles Aznavour – Floribunda. I agree, just beautiful.

Thursday Brian heads off to Patagonia. I wonder what kinds of roses he will find there? Thanks for thinking about me Brian. I miss you ! !

January and the Conservatory

It’s January. After the Christmas stuff is put away it is a pretty long, gray, boring month. We leave for work in the dark in the morning and come home in the dark at night. But we have started an exciting project that has been on our wish list for a long time, so this January is a little bit more exciting than most.

Each year Paul pulls all the plants in under our back porch around December 1st and hangs a plastic wall to close them in for the winter. The back of the house faces towards the sun, so the plants have perfect conditions during the winter months. It has been a vision of Paul’s to design a conservatory for the plants winter home. Late last year he finished his drawings and worked with a contractor to get the project going.

We are building the structure out of metal. This weekend the welding of the roof pieces was completed. The next steps are to float the floor, plaster the walls and put in the windows and lighting. The back porch of the house and the shape of the roof was not changed because Paul’s plan was to use as much of the existing frame for less construction costs. The drainage and the pot sprinklers had to be re-routed but luckily not through my rose bed. I am so excited about our new conservatory. Thank you Paul !

The Miracle of Bulbs

Happy New Year ! December was so busy that I did not have any time to post pictures on my website, so I am glad to be back in my routine.

Each year I force various varieties of amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs in water. I always have a lot of fun watching the bulbs burst out into full flower during the Christmas holidays. Here were some of my favorite amaryllis bulb flowers from this season.

To stunt the growth of your paperwhites so the stems don’t get so long and tip over, mix 1 part vodka to 7 parts water.

Beautiful Outside Today

Even though I have been fighting a cold this weekend, it was lovely to putter in the garden for awhile this afternoon. Fall color and cannas were still in bloom. Paul was busy cleaning the leaves out of the pool and watching the Cowboy Game. I got to see Jennifer, she was going to meetings over this way and I am so glad she had a chance to stop by. Brian has been taking good care of me while I have a cold. Thank you very much, Brian.
