A Truckee Thank You

Well, I'm still wiping the sweat and joy off my guitars this morning. The two reunited Truckee Brother shows were off the hook on Friday. I think all four of us are still in shock about just how great it was. I guess that if you break up acrimoniously but do it quietly, go about your business keeping it all "in the family" and all of you keep on making music that you believe in, then finally four years later get tricked into reuniting by an old a friend and a band members' girlfriend, then you might find that you're better than you ever were. Different AND better. More relaxed. More focused. And grateful to be there. Everyone of us.

Thank you to everyone who came out, whooped and hollered, danced, drank, hugged us and packed the Casbah for two shows on Friday. It was insane! We were humbled and emboldened by you. From before the very first chord struck you were all with us and so we gave back everything we had. So many familiar faces and friends from all over the country, Truckee supporters, and many new faces and names to try and remember. It really was amazing to us.

There will be pics video and more specific thank you’s posted soon but for now we simply say thank very very much. We don’t know what might come next for us, but you have helped to light a spark that has got us thinking. This show was truly a surprise in more ways than one, so we’ll just see what more surprises might wait down the line for the TBs.

Until then, we thank you, we applaud you, we salute you! Especial those in the “splash zone” of the first three rows. Have a very Happy and Truckeefied New Year! We’ll be talking with you soon.

Daughter's band in best of 2013 list

Death And Taxes included the Daughter's band Wax Queen Standard in their best of 2013 along with Deap Vally, Kanye West, Daft Punk, HAIM & Paramore. Says they: "I felt obligated to bring special notice to this single (the bands’ first), as it is rare that I am so completely taken by a single release."

I'd say that's something to crow about.

It's finally official, I've signed an agreement with music publisher Little Brother to represent my entire past catalog including Truckee Brothers and Wirepony records as well as everything new that's coming down the pike. Really proud to be part of this family with Eddie Gomez and his team and a growing roster of some of my favorite songwriters like the legendary Exene Cervenka. Rolling Tape

I snuck a shot of the tape rolling on the recording sessions at Playground Sound in Nashville, TN where we're in the thick of working on my next full length album. Producing with Cosmic Thug is proving to be not only the right fit, but the music is coming out in a flood of ideas and sounds. Studio all day, then home at night to write for the next day's session with a little good food tossed in between. And to top it off, my old Truckee Brothers bandmate, Matt Lynott agreed to join us for the duration so we're like a four armed Quad-clops on steroids. And I love that guy. He's helped carry me through a lot. Inspiring. Inventive. And funny as hell. All I know is we are on our way. All our asses are wigglin'. What a blast. The excitement mounts.

Truckee Brothers in new book

Along with the Clash, Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Husker Du, The Fall, George Harrison and more, my old outfit Truckee Brothers is featured in a new book on music with some very heady words said. In "The Music Obsessives Guide to Life", forward by Henry Rollins, author Joel Freimark has the cajones to say "...it is abundantly clear that TBs were far beyond almost any other band on the planet in every area of musical creation...there is literally nothing from the past decade of recorded music that can stand on the same plane...". And this is a book that includes Songs in the Key of Life! Geez Louise. The book is actually a great collection of entries arranged to encourage firing up the album in question, reading the entry and settling in for the duration of the record. I'm already enjoying checking out some that I've never heard, and re-checking some old favorites. Perfect book for an obsessive like me.

Unity within Disunity

I have many friends that I value and who make my life all the better for being in it. I am proud to say that they are of every political and social stripe. Some are Democrats, some are Republicans, some are libertarians, some are socialists, some communist (yes, the ideal still exists), some are highly religious even religious leaders, some are simply spiritual, some agnostic, some are fiercely atheist, some gay, some straight, single parents, happily married, young people, elderly folks, some a bit messy, others steady and solid. And I have to say that I'm inspired to know all of these people. They are ALL good hearted individuals who try and live by their ideals. Who have and express their opinions. Who embody the ideas that are written into our Constitution of freedom of thought, expression and faith. An idea that is still better than we have yet achieved, but inspires us to keep reaching. People who want leaders that represent them, their needs, their experience, their beliefs in our government, whatever those ideals might be. I'm proud of them because they care enough to listen, speak up and then vote! And despite a disturbing trend in our politicians and our media to create and feed disunity and divisiveness amongst us in order to get their man or woman elected, what we vote for does not decide whether we are friends, but the quality and character of the human beings that we are is what determines it.

I am proud that I have friends of every political stripe who feel compelled to use their vote to address their personal views and needs. We are not products, we are not villains, we are people. People with different opinions and vastly different experiences that mold our attitudes and needs. People who think. People who care. And by our example, by refusing to take part in the destructive campaign of political spite, by practicing cooperation and communication with each other, by talking, by working FOR rather than AGAINST ideas, we will force those who we all vote for to do the same. To achieve results for us. To begin to find solutions rather than simply throw mud. To stop vilifying those who disagree with them as the enemy. To grow up and become stewards for the country rather than schoolyard bullies, and to work in our best interest together. Pushing and pulling, not always agreeing, but moving forward with positive action. We have the strength to make that happen if we want it. We've got more power within us common folk than we even realize.

You all inspire me to vote it, use it and live it. And I thank you for that.

Painting 2012

Here's a partial detail of a painting I completed last week, commissioned by one of my favorite young playwright voices, Megan Breen with whom I shared a love for the work of the Andalusian poet Federico García Lorca. This piece incorporates her own writing into it and is inspired by her words spread over four interconnected panels.

I'm extremely happy that she approached me to create this and I'll post more about it once it is properly unveiled later this month.

Began recording yesterday at Playground Sound with the production duo of Cosmic Thug (Justin Collins and Adam Landry), and was it ever a pleasure magnetizing new music with those two fine gents. They midwived well as my newest sounds came barrelling down the cosmic canal. They make damn good records with Deer Tick, Diamond Rugs and lots more folks and I'm excited to be cutting with them. It's also great working with such fine human beings. The music it has begun.

Truckee Ghosts in NYC

Taking a break from working on new songs in NYC and I throw iTunes on random. A few songs in it delivers up what I think is some outtake from the Verve or My Morning Jacket or some such epic outfit. Soaring, changing time signatures, seamless left turns in the dynamics and progressions. Turns out it's from Truckee Brothers' last ever session and is being written on the floor as it's being recorded. We churned out about 20 of our best ever ideas in just 3 days in those sessions. Huge epic and close intimate stuff. And in this track I'm hearing everyone is on FIRE!

Thirteen minutes of ceaseless roller coaster bombast. Hoffee's licks are driving and diving like an attacking spitfire and Ott and I are laying down a riff and progression I don't even remember writing, taking left and right turns on a whim. And the engine is Matty playing some of the best fills and dynamics I've ever heard him play (and you know that's saying a lot as my favorite drummer of all time). All of it being written as it's being played with not a note or progression missed. And at the end...I seem to shout "Matty on guitar!". Well then I'm more of a bad ass drummer than I even thought if that's the case and Matty should have been on guitar the whole time! And it's possible. I remember coffee and whisky. Movies, food and song after song spilling out of us. I even remember switching instruments frequently. All I can say is...fuck, I guess we were really that good.

Brazilbilly Covers

Here's a sneak peak at the packaging for the new Brazilbilly release. I had the great pleasure of being asked by Kenny Vaughan and Jesse Lee Jones to direct & designing the concept for this release which was produced by Kenny. It resulted in two cover versions; one for the CD release and an alternate version for the 12" vinyl release. The photos, shot by Stacie Huckeba, were just as conceived; that the band positioned under the neon of their name on Lower Broadway, Nashville and reflected off the polished surface of band leader, Jesse Lee's, '53 Cadillac would give us an old-school "Columbia" style cover shot with a modern color-scape. Stacie nailed it in minutes as we ducked in and out of Robert's Western World between cloud bursts and the band's sets.

Wirepony Right Hook Of Love : Review

I'm really excited to be playing The Basement Nashville tomorrow night (Monday Dec 5th) solo! It was one of the first clubs in the country outside of San Diego to embrace my old band, the Truckee Brothers, and they made us feel very welcome then. Now Mike Grimes and Dave Brown have already made me feel right at home again. It's the perfect place to unveil some new songs I've been working on over the last year during a host of personal change. Some of my favorite writing I've ever done. I am honored and looking forward to seeing old friends again. P x
