My new book venture is a collection of short stories concerning Bottle Mining Adventures. Gert and Nina, friends for many years, now share a common passion - bottle mining. Nina is a homemaker and a widow. Gert, a spinster, had spent productive years as a beloved schoolteacher who started her career in a one-room schoolhouse and ended with her retirement at a district high school. Now, with those early responsibilities gone, the two women have time to search for antique bottles in old, abandoned dumps. They meet an eclectic variety of characters as they trade-off collectibles and sell old bottles at flea markets.

Stories include, The Crazy Jug, The Pink Victorian Lady, The Rescue, Hikers and Bottle Miners, The Conjurer, The Willowbrook Inn, The Wedding Reception*, A Catty Arrangement*, and Not Suitable Viewing For Children*.

MEET KATHY STEMKE:

"Moving Through All Seven Days"

I'm very excited to announce that Action Alley Education is close to publishing, Moving Through All Seven Days. This book inspires movement as children learn about the days of the week. The lyrical rhymes also teach them how to spell each day! The activities at the end of the book are designed to reinforce the concepts as well as give impetus to movement exploration.

The illustration above is from the new book. Tony Glisson is the talented illustrator who cleverly depicts the fun we have on Saturday.

That's exciting news, Kathy. Now tell our readers a little about yourself. Where are you from?

I'm originally from New York. I went to school in Connecticut and stayed there many years. In 1990, I moved to Georgia, and I now live in the North Georgia Mountains.

When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing poetry when I was a teenager to express all those new feelings and frustrations.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book was an anthology of poems and photography. I've always liked using mixed mediums to express myself.

Do you have a poem that you could share with us?

Sure, here's one:

"Dance."

The mirror of my soul

Reflects from deep within my core.

Dance with unconscious roots

From the murmur of blood is born.

A moment captured in time,

Expanding rays of light in space,

Soaring beyond Earth's grip,

Imagination takes a visible place.

An innate force that must be released.

Communes with God and transcends

Life’s trials and joys, simply becoming

DANCE, the essence that my heart extends.

NOT SUITABLE VIEWING FOR CHILDREN

"Study this photo, class, and tell me what you see,"
instructed Lewis Golden, a math teacher at the Marin Middle School in Carmen, New York. Lew held up a picture of a tortured, dismembered body. The seventh graders squealed with delight before he slapped the picture face down on his desk and took several deep breaths to compose himself.
The realization came too late he had picked up the wrong folder from his brother, Ralph's, cluttered desk at the crime lab in nearby Renssalear when he had stopped early morning to have a cup of coffee. Lew's folder had contained photos of rare plant and insect specimens which he was going to incorporate into a statistical study project for the class in session. (more)

Settled cozily in her sunny kitchen, Gert Carver was deeply absorbed in The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie when a loud knocking on her unlocked back door snapped her to attention. Doors were frequently left unlocked in the village of Indian Falls, so she carefully marked the page she was reading, and simply called out, "Come on in."

The visitor was her cousin Brett's grandson, Scott, who came through the door and stood indecisively on the welcome mat. "Damn, that's sun's bright! I can't see a blasted thing in here," he said. "My eyes have spots in front of them." He rubbed his eyes hard and blinked. . . more
