Disabled Children Gain New Rights

The United Nations has formally adopted a draft Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The convention compliments the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and highlights the ways in which children and young peoples with disabilities rights are often violated.

England Launches Children’s Rights Survey

The government has launched a new online survey to hear if children and young people think there rights are being respected.

The survey is open to anybody Under 18 in England and covers a range of questions about implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Falconer Launches Human Rights Campaign

A campaign to encourage police and other public sector workers to adopt a common-sense approach to human rights has been launched today.

The Human Rights: Common Values, Common Sense will aim to promote, argue for and advance the case of human rights. The campaign will promote the view that human rights are reflective of our values, and that, informed by those values, human rights are common sense.

Government Rights Record Condemned

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England has published its annual State of Children’s Rights in England report. The report calls for further action to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – an international set of minimum standards for children’s rights ratified by the UK government in 1991.

Maze Advocacy Project launches website

The Maze Advocacy project has launched a national website for young people experiencing emotional and mental distress.

Advocacy in Somerset and Tros Gynnal in Wales run the project in partnership. Both organisations jointly provide independent advocacy services for children and young people aged 6-19 experiencing emotional and mental distress who live in Somerset and Cardiff.

Personalised Learning is Participative Learning

A new government backed report on the future of education has called for personalised learning to become the norm in British schools.

The Gilbert Review of Teaching and Learning 2020 was created by then Education Secretary Ruth Kelly in March 2006. The review aimed to avoid the creation of a ‘one size fits all’ approach to learning in schools. Children who will be entering higher education, work or training in 2020 will be starting in reception class in September.

PW Launch New Guide To Participation Rights

Participation Works has produced a new publication for top-tier managers that sets out the legal obligations relating to children and young people’s participation rights.

The guide, Listen and change, states the case for participation in a human rights context. This is based on the United Nation’s Convention of the Rights of the Child that guarantees every child aged 17 or under has the right to express their views on all matters that affect them.

Respecting the rights of under 18’s: New guidance for doctors

The General Medical Council (GMC) has published new guidance that sets out the doctor’s role and responsibilities towards children and young people. The guidance, which comes into effect on The 15th October 2007, will be of interest to children and young people themselves as well as all those with an interest in their care.

UK Children’s Commissioners Report on State of Children’s Rights

The four Children’s Commissioners for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have launched their report today on the state of human rights for children in the UK. The commissioners will present the joint report to the United Nations in Geneva on Wednesday (11th June).

UK Government failing to protect children’s rights

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England have launched their annual State of Children’s Rights in England report today.

The report provides a damning criticism of the UK Government’s progress in implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The UNCRC was ratified by the UK in 1991 and sets out key children’s rights recommendations.

UN calls for urgent action on participation

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has called for significant action on children’s participation rights.

In its verdict on implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in the UK over the past five years, the Committee of international experts called for urgent legal and policy reforms. In some of its strongest criticisms to date it expressed concern about the “general climate of intolerance and negative public attitudes towards children”.
