</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The paranormal is interesting; it’s exciting; it’s revealing. It is controversial, mainstream, a way of life for some and something to be avoided by others. The paranormal is a divisive topic - a bit like politics and religion!<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Today, the paranormal is popularised by images of ghosts, messages from the dead and reports of objects flying around rooms - but it is so much more than all this sensationalised hype. The paranormal is at the heart of what it means to be human, to be alive and to be dead! It seeks to challenge us to look at who we are, why we are here, and what are our beliefs about life itself, life after death, life before birth, even life between life! <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The paranormal challenges us to question what we know about consciousness - not only human consciousness but all living consciousness (very little, apparently). What do we know about death (not much that the experts agree on, least of all when it actually happens)? What about the reports of levitating spirits and unearthly calm that occur at that moment of some deaths (but not all)? Is there a step-by-step process of preparation that takes place before the final encounter (a new area of study)? Do memories pass from one life to the next (reincarnation is widely accepted in some cultures, but not others)? If this is the case, then what is actually transferred, and how (personal genetics and human consciousness spring to mind)? <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Yes, the paranormal is exciting but for so many more reasons than those that first spring to mind.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The paranormal is at the very heart of who and what we are. The study of the paranormal embraces the phenomena that cannot readily be explained by the laws of science and in my studies specifically this includes deja vu, apparitions, near-death episodes, out-of-body experiences, psychokinesis, premonitions, auras, mediumship, reincarnation, and telepathy.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">So, what do we mean by these phenomena? Recently I completed a Master’s Degree at Monash University in Melbourne Australia and the topic of my dissertation was the paranormal, or more correctly parapsychological experiences. My thesis was based on the results of an online survey and to gather responses I needed to define what it was that I was studying. Here are the definitions I relied upon:<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* telepathy is defined as mind-to-mind communication; <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* precognition or premonition refers to the experience in which information about the future is obtained without the use of the five senses; <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* clairvoyance or remote viewing encompasses the phenomenon whereby current information is obtained without using the five senses (ESP is a general term which encompasses telepathy, precognition and clairvoyance); <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* psychokinesis (PK) refers to the ability of the mind to impact living and non-living entities; <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* near-death episodes (NDE) are reported by people who have been brought back from the brink of death; <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* out-of-body experiences (OBE) occur when the mind’s awareness is external to the physical body; <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* reincarnation applies to the recall of events, people and places from previous lifetimes; <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* hauntings include apparitions, and unexplained sounds and movements of objects, which are associated with particular locations; and <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* poltergeists, which are a type of PK that may depend on the presence of some individuals who unwittingly produce the disturbing effects. More recently, poltergeists have become specifically linked to the presence of adolescents and children.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Some of the earliest reports of parapsychological phenomena are to be found in the ancient spiritual texts - The Egyptian Book of the Dead, and the Talmud, Bible, Koran, and the Kabbalah - and in the writings of the early philosophers such as Homer, Socrates, and Aristotle. Historically, the remarkable events in these texts have tended to be attributed to divine powers but more recently people have begun to question these teachings. <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">What, for example, is the difference between prophecy and premonition? Are miracles and psychokinesis symptomatic of the same thing? Is hearing the voice of God a type of clairvoyance? Are these the same experiences but under different names?<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">In some corners of academia, there are quiet rumblings to have these, and other matters involving the paranormal looked at more closely - but be warned. Studying the paranormal is a career-limiting move. Today, there are few parapsychologists in the world (under 50, at the last count) and even fewer who make a living from their expertise. Studying the paranormal is still regarded as more of a retirement hobby than a career choice!<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The well-practised tradition of reporting paranormal phenomena continues today - in books, films and the media but with one very powerful addition - the internet. More and more, those who encounter the scientifically unexplained in everyday life are turning to cyberspace to make sense of what has happened to them. Some need reassurance; others are searching for like-minded people. Today, the paranormal is openly and freely discussed across websites, on blogs and in chatrooms. Yet, remarkably, very little formal research has been carried out on these everyday paranormal experiences. <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">In stark contrast to the abundance of paranormal self-reports on the web there is a noticeable shortage of contemporary research on spontaneous parapsychological phenomena. Unlike most academic research, my paranormal study was open to everyone aged 18 years and over (according to university ethical guidelines). Participants were self-selecting - believers, non-believers, paranormal experients and sceptics - all were welcome. All that was needed was an ability to speak English, access to the internet and a willingness to participate. As this was the first time such a study had been conducted it was impossible to know at the outset how many participants there would be. Fifty? A hundred? A thousand? Maybe more?<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Over 4,000 people stormed the survey website to document their paranormal experiences and while the majority of the participants were from the United States of America, Australia, United Kingdom, and Canada nearly 60 countries were represented. More women than men participated, but that ratio was closer than most people would have guessed - 60/40. The majority of the participants were in the 18-35 year age range but they were closely matched by the 36-55 year olds.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Some results were predictable: spontaneous parapsychological experiences appear to be universal, and not limited to adulthood; deja vu was the most widely reported experience; and very few people reported experiencing near death episodes. Other results were far more surprising including the (statistically significant) tendency for women to report experiences of deja vu, apparitions, out-of-body experiences, auras, mediumship, reincarnation, and telepathy. Conversely, why do men and women equally report incidences of psychokinesis? Why did some countries report more of certain types of phenomena than others? And, why all the references to the female bloodline? <br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The survey raised as many questions as it answered! So, what could I do but listen to the requests to reopen it. My aim is to gather the largest database of information on spontaneous paranormal experiences. Would you like to contribute anonymously? Click here http://bit.ly/pVh5D<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I believe the study of the paranormal is the study of the essence of life. Do you agree?<br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">There is a discussion going on in the wider community - and it has been ongoing for a few years now - involving numbers. Apparently there are websites and email trails dating back years on this and the matter has not been satisfactorily resolved. My attention was drawn to this by a reader, Marianne, who asks:<br />
</span></span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Why do people keep seeing 444 all over the place? I've been seeing them for years and when I meditate on "why" I get no clarity. I've been seeing 4s everywhere for years. On licenses plates. Bills. Telephone numbers. DVD & VCR players, route markers, stamps, sales slip at grocery markets, etc. Absolutely *everywhere* - is there a rhyme or reason to this?? I would love a simple (good?) explanation if you have one. Thank you (smile). </span></span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Is this just a matter of where we put our attention is what we notice - like when we decide to buy a blue car and suddenly that's about all we see on the roads? Is this to do with the paranormal? I don't have an explanation? Do you?</span></span></span><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><b style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">From Laura: Hi I feel like I have bad karma or some sort of negetive (sic) energy around me. It seems that I have the tendency to be impulsive, I get paranoid, then I lose friends. I let the best get to me, my feelings so easily hurt. I don't want to lose the people I love in my life.</b></span></i><br />
<br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">I'm wondering if this really is karma as you suggest Laura. There are many more things at play in our lives than karma. I'm thinking there's our own genes; upbringing; the lessons we learn from others and from our own life experiences. The list is quite long.</span><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Have you thought about talking to your friends or family about this? Often those closest to us can give insights on how we come across in life - and even if we don't want to hear what they are saying - if they know us well they can have good insights to share.</span><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">I'm certainly not an expert on karma but my intuition tells me this is something that you could tackle head on in this life - and with the help of those who love you. If there isnt anyone, then think about talking to a professional. It may only be a case of learning a few new life skills - nothing too heavy. And who knows, by doing this you may actually contribute to your karma balance!</span><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">I'll leave this open for insights from others ....</span><br />

Maybe it is the case that once we get the hang of it (whatever that means) we are able to see ghosts almost at every turn. Keep going Mike and Andrew. The world needs more ghost hunters - just don't scare them away please. I was going to say that the world needs ghosts. But does it? What do you think?</span></span><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">From Stephanie: S</span></span></b><b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">chizophrenia runs in my family, I believe that if doctors would study the spiritual aspects of s</span></span></b><b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">chizoprenia they would find a cure. I know people need meds also. What do you think?</span></span></b></i><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </i></b></span><br />
</div><div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Great question Stephanie! Throughout history, many brilliant minds have had one form of mental illness or another and some of them have also been intimately involved in the study of the paranormal. Even today, I know of at least one very high functioning parapsychologist who has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">As far as the medical fraternity is concerned there is still along way to go before we will see the study of paranormal experiences being included in the curriculum. Having said that, however, inroads are being made in this area. One hundred years ago psychology was regarded with deep suspicion - today it is totally mainstream. </span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Change takes time - lots of time! From the encounters I had during my paranormal studies with eminent academics (including senior post holders in the medical faculties), parapsychological studies are usually regarded as something to be undertaken in the twilight years. This has its good and bad points. On the plus side, there are well credentialed academics such as <a href="http://deanradin.blogspot.com/">Dean Radin</a> </span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">who have made a name for themselves in the so-called hard sciences before turning to studying psi. The fact that they have established credibility in another field adds to the credibility of their paranormal work. The downside is that it takes decades to become credentialed elsewhere!</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Every academic study that adds to the database of knowledge on the paranormal helps move psi towards becoming mainstream. The current study being carried out by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK7_T9CpvGw">Sam Parnia</a> in the UK, while not directly linked to mental illness, is another example of how credible medicos are bridging the gap between mainstream medicine and non-traditional approaches.</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">So, I guess that's my long answer Stephanie. My short answer is it will happen. Indirectly, it is happening already. It is just that the nature of science requires that progress be made in a careful and measured manner.</span></span><br />

</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">There are a couple of things you might like to look at.</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">First, if you feel the images are symbolic then check out a few books on the subject - Amazon perhaps.</span></span><br />

</span> </span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Secondly, however, if you feel that you actually have the answer inside yourself (and who knows ourselves better than us?) then perhaps go inward and see what you come up with.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">I guess another option is that you may actually be frightened of snakes.</span></span><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">As my thesis confirmed, experiencing the paranormal seems to be a universal possibility. This is not limited to any country in particular, and I suspect it crosses every divide - race, age, gender, language - but with variations (more on this later). While the online survey was written in English and it did attract the largest number of respondents from the expected countries, it was the responses from the residents of the unforeseen countries that really caught my attention.</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">First, to the major contributing nations. Overwhelmingly, it was the Americans who checked in and contributed the most (62%), followed by the Australians (15%), British (8%), and Canadians (7%). One notable, and indeed unfortunate omission from the survey was the Chinese. Their absence was presumably due to the Government's tight controls on the Internet, rather than a language barrier or a lack of spontaneous paranormal experiences to report.</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The small remaining balance of responses came from residents of 55 other countries. And what a list that is!</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The second largest group of contributors were from South Africa, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand, and India with smaller numbers emanating from Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, and Zambia.</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">There were also contributions from Croatia and Cyprus, Hong Kong and Hungary, Macedonia and Malta, Nepal and Nigeria, and Tanzania and Turkey. Antarctica was the only continent not represented (anyone know someone based down there? Let them know that the survey is now </span></span><a href="http://bit.ly/pVh5D"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">live</span></span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"> once more.)</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">I must admit that it was surreal to see my Explanatory Statement translated into other languages including Russian and Finnish. Such a buzz!</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span> </span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Summary:</span></span></b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"> the data supports the notion that spontaneous paranormal experiences are widely encountered. </span></span><br />

These included: variations in the levels of incidence of the different types of phenomena; gender differences; national variations; and the trend for paranormal experiences to have a marked impact on the experients, their values, and the way they lived their lives. The research outcomes also supported the notions that spontaneous parapsychological experiences are universal, and not limited to adulthood. The majority of first encounters, of eight of the ten types of paranormal phenomenon, occurred in childhood - under 18 years of age, including a small number of pre birth experiences. In addition, the narratives offered numerous references to the perceived significance that race, genetics, and the female bloodline play in the paranormal experience.</p><p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Verdana"><br /></p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Verdana">The current findings both support the existing literature and suggest new research directions. At the personal level, for those charged with the mental, spiritual, and educational welfare of the individual, particularly the young, this exploratory study highlights the need to take spontaneous parapsychological experiences, and their experients, seriously. At the broader level, the findings confirm the ubiquitous nature of the paranormal and suggest both unifying and independent themes in the nature, incidence, impact and integration of parapsychological phenomena. Additional research is indicated and a catalogue of eleven recommendations for future study is proffered.</p></span></span></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><br /></span></b></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'times new roman';"><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#3333FF;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">Put your Paranormal Experiences on the Record - complete the anonymous survey n</span></b></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#3333FF;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">ow</span></b></span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"> </span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#CC0000;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">http://bit.ly/omr7y</span></b></span></div></span>Rosemary Breenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12711026746719488363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4979289761160182942.post-64141543414245562932009-08-13T11:22:00.017+10:002009-08-19T11:55:42.685+10:00Paranormal Thesis Finally Catalogued!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk-qoY_uY9wvAwg3DgVPcZv4NRQxCnNEMoBRgOwlSuL8CFzLj5kKoPJDC-xGMTnBb9pvWoD1GF3BfKtRAq4uPoGvHz6Ing8ZauXO6qwHZiPAOwxOlHwFSCRh54Bn3L5pET8CkBmJFqgtA/s1600-h/trinity-college-library-dub.jpg"><img style="text-align: justify;float: right; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 158px; " src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk-qoY_uY9wvAwg3DgVPcZv4NRQxCnNEMoBRgOwlSuL8CFzLj5kKoPJDC-xGMTnBb9pvWoD1GF3BfKtRAq4uPoGvHz6Ing8ZauXO6qwHZiPAOwxOlHwFSCRh54Bn3L5pET8CkBmJFqgtA/s200/trinity-college-library-dub.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5369257971188245778" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></span></div></span><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#3333FF;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">My thesis has hit the shelves of the Monash Library. In addition to the numerous books, films and media articles, there is a growing body of personal narratives which is readily accessed through online websites, blogs and chatrooms. By comparison, there is a paucity of documented research on spontaneous parapsychological phenomena in the academic literature. The current exploratory study sought to redress this imbalance by addressing the research problem: what types of paranormal phenomena do people spontaneously encounter, and are there unifying themes in the reports of these experiences? </span></span></span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; "><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">This research followed the Mixed Methods Research model. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered via an online survey instrument, which was written in English. The majority of the paranormal experients were from the United States of America (N= 1979), Australia (N=485), United Kingdom (N=252), and Canada (N=228). I've just finished a book and I'd like to recommend it. It's not about the paranormal but I could draw a long bow and say that it is about research.</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
</div></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">All this new technology! Are you on top of it? Did I mention how much the internet changes while I had my nose in al those journals dating back decades? Well there's been this explosion of technological connections and I've just finished a great book that has in some ways brought me up to speed with Web 2.0 and social media. If anyone is interested in understanding - rationalizing? - this latest wave (before the next wave arrives) - I'd recommend reading this book. Sure it's a hardback and it's got graphs and statistics and an index and pages of notes in it, but it has so much more. I love the insights it offers.</span></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
</div></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> </span></span><br />
</div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Times;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Anyway, the book is called the Groundswell and the authors are Charlebe Li and Josh Bernoff. They are both from </span></span><a href="http://www.forrester.com/Groundswell"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Forrester Research </span></span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">and, as Im a researcher well - that's probably another reason why I really like this book. Having read it, I feel like I've time travelled 5 years in 5 weeks and maybe, just for a moment at the end of the book I was up to speed on the internet. Of course, now Im behind again because the internet is evolving so fast! But at least, for a split second, I did feel I had a handle on what was making cyberspace tick.</span></span></span></span><br />

There is an enormous body of research that points to the freedom that being anonymous gives the respondents. Among the arguments for this type of research are the removal of any pressure for the respondents to conform to the expectations (no matter how subtle) of the designer of the survey. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, fantasy;font-size:16px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;">In the past, academic institutions relied on students to be their guinea pigs and often the cohorts chosen were the first years - barely adults themselves, and with limited life experiences. This practice continues. Members of the academic fraternity are still being recruited, often by their own lecturers and tutors. They are surveyed and the findings of the studies are written up in academic journals, and the participants are presented as being representative of the general population! </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, fantasy;font-size:16px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, -webkit-fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;">Many will argue against this. Some will protest that this practice doesn't go on; others will be appalled and call its abolition or at least a true disclosure of what the results reflect. </span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, fantasy;font-size:16px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, -webkit-fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;">However, as with many things in life, change takes time and some changes take longer than others. Furthermore, research in general is not immune to pulling power of the prevailing unit of currency, and academic research in particular is even more beholding to those who control the limited pools of research funding. Students are readily available; they are keen to contribute to the body of academic knowledge (and even keener to get good grades?); and they are a cheap source of labour (for this read free). This is the reality of university research. But it doesn't have to be - particularly where non laboratory based research is concerned. </span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, fantasy;font-size:16px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, -webkit-fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;">Through the openness of the Internet it is possible to invite the world to become part of the whole academic research process. And that's what I did. I wanted my survey to be different. I knew it was a topic that touched the hearts, minds and lives of many people and it was them that I wanted to invite into my study. Sure, the Monash University cohort, of which I am still a member, were invited to contribute but I wanted to reach out beyond the four walls of the academic institution; beyond even the University's website and its reach, into the real world - the world that most paranormal experients inhabit. </span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, fantasy;font-size:16px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: normal; font-family:Georgia, -webkit-fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;">It worked. font-family: tahoma; line-height: 18px; "><p class="art_text" style="text-align: justify; "><br /></p><p class="art_text" style="text-align: justify; ">Every year millions of hours are spent in private psychic consultations. People choose their clairvoyant, make an appointment or speak on-line immediately, and all this is done often and without much thought.<br /><br />Why do users turn to clairvoyants? The list of reasons is long and wide. Some seek solace in times of grief; others are looking for excitement and fun. While the motivation for the consultation is rarely discussed, it is the outcome of the transaction (for that is what it is) that interests me more. Clients are unlikely to prepare themselves for their sessions by asking such questions as "what do I hope to get out of this?" or "how will I get value for money?" but these are just the questions, I suggest that should be asked.<br /><br />Who owns the psychic realms? Who are the gatekeepers and are they charging a fair price for access? Generally, the supernatural planes are not discussed in such terms and yet I think it is for this very reason that so many charlatans are allowed to flourish. The question of whether all psychics are equal is a question for another time. that’s a different issue. What I’m calling for is more accountability and guarantees regarding quality of service.<br /><br />Is it too much to ask? With the advent of on-line psychic websites it is now possible to choose from a smorgasbord or talent. Photos, audios, bios and even testimonies are the order of the day. But have you ever looked behind these sites, at the small print? It makes for interesting reading, or not, depending on whether you are a user or non-user, skeptic or believer.<br /><br />Some disclaimer statements refer to on-selling personal information (I wonder what that means, given we are talking about oftentimes very personal information, not only about the client but also those who are drawn into the session, from the metaphysical spheres?) There is even the legal requirement in some countries for psychic sessions to be classified as being for entertainment purposes only. This is a whole issue in itself and one that has been hotly debated in the last year or so in the UK especially. This use of language certainly doesn't help the the grieving widow or the distressed parent. I doubt if they’ve signed up for a round of diversion and amusement and hopefully they are able to look past the wording to the service they require. Such people are oftentimes vulnerable and lacking in objective judgment. Is this a case for more openness in the industry? Websites can reserve the right to edit or omit any feedback items which they consider inappropriate, whatever that means. Seemingly this allows them to control the image which they project. Not very reassuring I would suggest.<br /><br />I’m not talking about content here. Where are the regulations and consumer protection? There is always the old dictum ‘buyer beware’ but that is not enough. The psychic industry is huge. It involves numerous people - on both sides of the transaction - and yet it’s almost impossible to get any data on the industry. How much money is ‘invested’ in this type of ‘entertainment’? How many individuals derive their income from this source? How many people use the services of psychics and how often do they outlay their cash? And just as importantly, are the end users satisfied customers? Sure, feedback is subjective. Sure, it is open to misinterpretation but what is the alternative. Silence! It’s been the only option for too long.<br /><br />I don’t know the answer to these questions but I’m going to try and find out. Someone has to.</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p><table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td class="bio" style="font-size: 12px; font-family: tahoma; line-height: 18px; background-color: rgb(244, 249, 235); "><p>The writer has recently graduated from Monash University, Australia with a Master's degree in Education. Getting the actual instrument working correctly is just one of the factors which contributes to the overall success of an survey. Another important factor is knowing what data is needed. There are two broad types of information - qualitative and quantitative. Both have a part to play in scoping whatever the phenomena under investigation, which in my case were spontaneous paranormal experiences.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;font-weight: normal; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">Traditionally, in academia especially, researchers either come down on the side of collecting qualitative information or collating quantitative data. There is a deep, historical divide between the two camps who oftentimes regard themselves as being diametrically opposite. There is a third path and, given that my topic of research is considered to be far from mainstream, it is probably not surprising that this option is one I chose. It is called Mixed Methods Research and for those who see the benefits of gathering both 'objective' numbers and 'subjective' narratives, then I suggest this is an option worthy of further investigation.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;font-weight: normal; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">By and large Mixed Methods Research is still considered to be alternative, not mainstream, by academics. Indeed, there is a lot of heated argument (or to be more polite, intellectual discussion) about the merits, or otherwise, of using this method but, having used it so successfully myself, I am in no doubt that it has a place in research. The book which has become my permanent point of reference for this research model and one that I recommend is Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research by John Creswell and Vicki Plano Clark.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;font-weight: normal; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">Mixed Methods Research involves the gathering of both statistical and qualitative data - and therein lies its elegance. Statistics can mask the true face of the topic under review - the human element - and in my research, it was the personal impact of parapsychological experiences that I was looking to document. Using the Mixed Methods Research model I achieved this and a whole lot more.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;font-weight: normal; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">On numerous occasions during the running of the survey participants left me notes thanking me for the opportunity to tell their story. In part, this was because of the topic being investigated but I also believe that the actual design, layout and composition of the survey played a significant part in making the participants feel welcome and appreciated. Indeed, the survey was deliberately designed to build trust. Looking at the alternative, namely face to face interviews, it is relatively easy to build rapport (and indeed, the sales and marketing fields are awash with tips on how to do this). However, when the audience is unsighted and unknown, the demograph is potentially as wide as possible, the main thing, almost the only thing I had to work with was my words. And they worked. A survey is much more than a bunch of question. Take the time to consider how those questions come across and you will be rewarded not only with more responses, but with notes of thanks. Truly amazing, really!</span></p></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(75, 75, 75); "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><br /></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(75, 75, 75); font-family:Verdana;font-size:13px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); "><a href="http://www.PayPerClickSearchMarketing.com/r/a.php?NDY1u"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">Get 17 Free AdWords Cheat Sheets, MP3s, and Videos </span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">from someone with a proven track record of AdWords success.</span></span><br /></span></div>Rosemary Breenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12711026746719488363noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4979289761160182942.post-5382941620672824852009-05-18T18:21:00.008+10:002009-07-16T08:56:18.966+10:00How To Choose A Psychic - Or Not<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-EdN6mWtl_sV74IUe7n8QgZgnOeYqa9j8HYcqLYSVWpXMsaq0N_02ADT-bHyTs7YrjBl_ND_qGx1dAqZ2rqPr2CBdUoFmnSxaoPtS5cwu1BwEXTHhL75Df2eoE7OjjvHCgj0Lbf3jvDM/s1600-h/3100055200_e3ce4bc2d7_m.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-EdN6mWtl_sV74IUe7n8QgZgnOeYqa9j8HYcqLYSVWpXMsaq0N_02ADT-bHyTs7YrjBl_ND_qGx1dAqZ2rqPr2CBdUoFmnSxaoPtS5cwu1BwEXTHhL75Df2eoE7OjjvHCgj0Lbf3jvDM/s200/3100055200_e3ce4bc2d7_m.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337089213965666162" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></span></span></span></span></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Every year millions of hours re spent in private psychic consultations. People choose their clairvoyant, make an appointment or speak online immediately, and all this is done often and without much thought. Why do users turn to clairvoyants? The list of reasons is long and wide. Some seek solace in times of grief; others are looking for excitement and fun. While the motivation for the consultation is rarely discussed, it is the outcome of the transaction (for that is what it is) that interests me more.</span></span></span> </span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Clients are unlikely to prepare themselves for their sessions by asking such questions as "what do I hope to get out of this?" or "how will I get value for money?" but these are just the questions, I suggest that should be asked. Who owns the psychic realms? Who are the gatekeepers and are they charging a fair price for access? Generally, the supernatural planes are not discussed in such terms and yet I think it is for this very reason that so many charlatans are allowed to flourish. The question of whether all psychics are equal is a question for another time. that’s a different issue. What I’m calling for is more accountability and guarantees regarding quality of service. Is it too much to ask? With the advent of online psychic websites it is now possible to choose from a smorgasbord or talent. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Photos, audios, bios and even testimonies are the order of the day. But have you ever looked behind these sites, at the small print? It makes for interesting reading, or not, depending on whether you are a user or non-user, sceptic or believer. Some disclaimer statements refer to on-selling personal information (I wonder what that means, given we are talking about oftentimes very personal information not only about the client but also those who are drawn into the session from the metaphysical spheres). There is even talk of psychic sessions being for entertainment purposes only. Tell that to the grieving widow or the distressed parent. I doubt if they’ve signed up for a round of diversion and amusement. Such people are oftentimes vulnerable and lacking in judgement. Is this a case for more openness in the industry? </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Websites can reserve the right to edit or omit any feedback items which they consider inappropriate, whatever that means. Seemingly this allows them to control the image which they project. Not very reassuring I would suggest. I’m not talking about content here. Silence! It’s been the only option for too long. I don’t know the answer to these questions but I’m going to try and find out. Someone has to. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Article Source: </span></span></span></span></span></span><a href="http://www.articlepool.com/how+to+choose+a+psychic++or+not-55797" title="How To Choose A Psychic - Or Not"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">How To Choose A Psychic - Or Not</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> About Author: The writer recently graduated from Monash University, Australia with a Master of Education degree. So, undaunted, I launched to questionnaire in September and left it open till the end of the year. From time to time Id check to see how the numbers were going. Of course it started off slowly but, once it gained momentum, the word spread, and the marketing campaign kicked in, the response to the survey was overwhelming and heartwarming at the same time.<br /></div></span><div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">My survey was handled by a third party - a company called SurveyMonkey. I used their infrastructure to format the survey, set the parameters and design the overall look and feel of the onscreen questionnaire. I tested and modified it before going live by using friends as the guinea pigs. They were patient and effusive with their comments and as it turned out, so were more than a few of the survey respondents. I couldnt count the number of times that survey participants left me a note thanking me for the opportunity to tell their story. Many expressed a sense of relief to be given the chance to document their anecdotes; others spoke of this being the first time they felt able to bear their souls and talk from the heart about incidences that had obviously impacted them greatly.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">In stark contrast to the deeply personal narratives sits the quantitative data. It seems somehow wrong to reduce the participants to numbers - but that is the nature of research that deals in numbers. On the one hand quantitative data gives the reader (and the researcher) a handle to hold onto - facts to easily quote, an elegant way of managing a mass of data. But, it also veils the personal, the intimate, the heartbreaking stories behind the numbers.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">I'm very pleased I chose to use a new research model - Mixed Methods Research. There is a lot of heated argument (or to be more polite, discussion) within academia about the merits of this method but, having used it so successfully, I'm in no doubt that it has its place in research. The book which became my permanent point of reference and one I'd recommend is entitled "Mixed Methods Research" by John Creswell and Vicki Plano Clark. This is widely regarded as the bible of this particular research model and for those contemplating formal research - be it in psychic studies of otherwise, it is well worth investigating.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Mixed Methods Research requires the gathering of both statistical and qualitative data - and therein lies its elegance.
