Feels like heaven to be able to sit back and write something after ages :) Liking the comeback, needless to say! It's been almost three months since I moved to a new country, city and a whole new hemisphere...yeah i like to say the last one too! Being in the Rainbow Nation - South Africa - the Republic of South Africa - whatever, in the oldest city of Cape Town - Kaapstad - City of Cape Town - Ah..whatever, here are answers to FAQs...as I see it and as you like it!

So, how is it in South Africa?

Whatever the it is, this is a beautiful country. Very new in its today's existence (the new RSA was formed in 1994 after "killing" the apartheid system) and a lot of things to offer. The country is definitely in the state of "transition" - people are seeing colors, no more black and white, and there is definitely increased grey matter.

Being in Africa, has your skin color changed?

Putting this question quite subtly...No, not everything is black in Africa, the milk is still white and so
are a few people! I am as brown as I was before coming here!

So have you been to *XYZ* national parks and seen the lions and the elephants?

No I have not yet! It is quite a disadvantage to be living in a tourists' city :( Most things are in the market for tourists and filtering the highly priced crap out of the lot is quite a task! But that said, local sightseeing is super affordable thanks to the buses and the trains! They do come at the right time and are extremely safe! Going far away from here needs a car which in turn needs a license that you can procure after an year of you landing here, unless you want to offer a help!

Is it safe? How about the crime rates?

Unfortunately this country clocks the highest numbers of rapes, murders and HIV in the world and they are form this vicious circle. There is inequality, thanks to apartheid. There is an attitude of You stole from us, now it is time we did the same. You can see magnificent buildings and envying infrastructure right next to townships that lack proper drinking water and sanitation. Like every city, there are places that you do not want to go to unless you have a solid reason. Being safe is as simple as 1-2-3. Just use common sense!

Is it dangerous to be out late in the night?

Honestly, I do not know! I have been super safe in Cape Town and when we move out we usually come back by 21 30, if we walk. Or take a taxi if it gets late. I have heard that things can get out of control when venturing around known "unsafe" places and there is definitely a reason to heed advices.

How about the people?

Irrespective of the skin color, most of them are sweet. No, they are not cannibals and they do not harm you, unless they have a reason to! I have had random people on the road ask me if they can carry my heavy grocery bag, or help me with my bicycle fixing, smile and say good evening, give a ride back home and wish a great stay here!

Cooking...how do you manage Indian cooking? Are there Indian stores?

This needs some history knowledge! Okay, so I do most of Indian cooking with ease and most stuffs are available here. This is not the Silicon Valley, so no Indian stores per se, but Durban (a city like Cape Town) has the highest number of Indians outside of India, most of whom are now South African citizens. Their previous generations did migrate from India during the British Raj and the world wars. And a few of them settled in Cape Town as well - so there are a few Indians here. Also, there are Cape Malays - a sect of people with Malaysian origins who were brought from Malaysia to work on the fields generations ago. Most of the spices that we use are similar to the Malay cuisine and hence there is no problem with cooking!

So you are in the southern hemisphere, does the water turn anti-clockwise when you flush it down the drain?

Okay, so this has to be a geek asking me. People do think that there is a dramatic difference when you go to the other half of the earth, but I have seen none. Neither the water turning anti-clockwise nor the sun rising in the west! Things seem all the same to me apart from a different view of the night sky. Because my husband is an astrophysicist, I do know that the axis of the Milky Way is visible from the Southern Hemisphere, the farther you go away from the equator, the better is the view. Since the city is so much light polluted, I can hardly see it yet!\

Looks like everything is hunky-dowry right? Good!

Well, no! There are same issues that plaque a developing country! There are bigger things like corruption, poverty, bureaucracy, inefficiency in the system, all kinds of mafias, power politics etc. There are also small issues like load-shedding and telecom outages. But I am not complaining :)

Hmm...!?!

Hmm...Its a great place and I am loving it!

And this time its after a great refreshing experience :) Well, Blogger has been too kind to me to show whats new in it and remind me that I can use these great features! Not bad at all!

That apart, let me share what my experience was. To put it as a one liner it could just be said that I had been to Infosys for an academic talk...but it was much more than just that! Its been two months since I have started visiting Infosys but today was special. All the excitement started when I received a mail from Mr. Narayana Murthy Sir about a talk in Infosys from the Chancellor of a university. That was just enough to make me wait for this day!

And today was right here! To start with, the security person who gives me a "Visitor Pass" everyday at the gate, called me and said "You have a special pass today!". Great hospitality I must say. And then I was lead into a beautifully decorated banquet hall and an auditorium. The facilities were mesmerizing. By the time I stood on my feet and recovered from the amazement, the talk began.

It was given by Dr. Robert Easter, Chancellor and Provost at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The topic of the talk was "Information Technology and the 21st Century Food and Agriculture System". Here are some of the interesting points thrown at us:

The big challenge of this century, Do we have enough food? (Food for thought indeed!)

The shift in the eating habits of people in the developing countries...gradual shift from staples and cereals to vegetables and meat.

If green revolution revolutionized the world in the 1960s, its the turn of biology and Information Technology to do it now!

How IT can help agriculture in terms of guidance, prediction, management of resources and energy and also the logistics of the farm produce. (Kind of Supply Chain Management problem)

IT for Animal welfare in agriculture.

Bare necessities of micro farmers which IT can help with, like production technology, market information and fertilizers.

The talk was followed by a Q/A session which was interesting and informative. On the whole it was a great learning experience to know what we could do for the society!

Talking about the dignitaries at the event, it was a small gathering of around 50 including industry experts and academia. We represented the latter part when a whole bunch of students and faculty were there. Industry experts included SETLab heads at Infosys and research heads from other organizations. We could meet a few of them too! And not to forget the dinner was also great!

The most memorable event for the day was when our Director Sir came to me and said "Did you look at the first slide about the University of Illinois? We are not even a speck in front of that!" Well he actually made that comment after watching the slide that said there were 23 Nobel laureates fro U of I. I would like to tell him, Sir, we would be there sometime soon!

It’s a season of FIFA 2010 and the fever has definitely caught up all parts of the world. It also has caught up the young guys who play in the play ground near my place. Each evening when I went out for a walk in the ground, I used to see them play with the cricket bat and ball. But this week it was all different. I saw five teams play football and was amazed and amused. What caught my sight was that there was this team of boys of around 12-15 years of age. The image I got after seeing them was that they came from one of the posh schools in the locality speaking the “cool” form of English and naming each other with the most famous footballers of today. I saw a “Rooney”, a “Ronaldo” and a “Beckham”. I was taking my usual path and when I was almost near the goal post, I saw a poor child all of 6 years staring at the ball. All he wanted to do was just pick the ball when it went out of the court and give it to the boys. He was also cheering them in the language he knew and the game went on…

After I finished a couple of rounds, I saw these boys hit a ball outside the goal post and within a blink of the eyes that poor boy went running behind the ball. Well, that was expected, but what I did not expect was this! As soon as he caught the ball, he called out for another four guys to just feel the ball. And they all came closer to see the ball and played with it for a few seconds until one of the boys in the team asked them to hurry up and return the ball. This was not uncommon in our country but I felt a strong comparison with that of capitalists and the poor, the policies, the law and everything else. Let me explain how.

Let’s go back to a decade earlier when the United States ruled the world in terms of technology and economy. (It’s not that they don’t do it now, but it was stronger before the recession). And the developing and underdeveloped countries were aplenty in the world, which waited for help from the riche rich. So comparing that with the football team, here is what I saw. I could compare the rich boys with these strong countries who have the money to buy whatever they needed and be always joyful. They had their own limits to cross and formed a different cult. That poor guy at the goal post was one of these poor countries who always waited for a missed opportunity at the goal post. And of course try and utilize every missed opportunity along with other fellow mates. Was this not how outsourcing started? Not that we are slaves or so, but that we had the knack of utilizing someone else’s opportunities waiting for it all the time. And that’s what put us where we are today! I was completely lost in these thoughts for few minutes. And when I came out of it I saw that the football team was continuing their game and the poor boy’s team started cricket on their own and of course indulged in the same! Is this inspired by today’s way of the world? I gave up thinking!

It hurts deep inside!

Coming out of the feverish blues, I was just analysing the other day as to what would be the worst (or rather call it best) way to hurt a person...Not that i am that bad to do it, but i am sure many of us would have at least been a victim of this, if not the cause :P So finally i came to a simple one liner that said hurt his/her ego and thats the most worst/best way of doing it!

I know its a well known fact but just mulling over what and why is the 3 letter word so important in ones life. I dont believe in people claiming "I am not an egoist" coz the sentence itself shows it all :P, but if one could say it from his/her heart that means they have achieved something great in life....May be something deserving more than a Nobel.....Sadly i have not yet come across someone like that, though i would love to :)

Psychologically i think the 3 letter word has a great impact on everyones' lives....Sometimes its a motivator to achieve something great in life...And many a times its the breaker in a relationship. Good that only humans can enjoy its benefits and pitfalls! (Imagine if every atom on earth had ego.......It would be a sad life to live) But giving it up like a saint is something not very practical i think coz at the end of the day "you" live for "yourself" or rather "i" live for "myself".

Knowing this, why should someone's comment hurt your ego? I think its purely because "you" love "yourself" more than you love anyone else. And coming over this fact is something that i can never do :( Or may be i don't want to try.........

And will trying help? Well, i don't really know because day by the day you count the number of achievements "you" have done in life rather than what the "others" have done. And as the number of days increase, so will the number of achievements.Even if its a failure, you don't bother to count the "others" failure but only "yours"....So eventually its "you" all the way down.........

So when someone hurts your ego, its "you" who will be hurt and its obvious that you can never forget something/someone who hurt "you"! So the next time "you" are hurt, just forget it thinking that it was not "you" but "your" ego :) Sounds funny? Well, thats one idea that i have, to forget and forgive who hurts me :) :) (Thankfully, there have not been many..........)

Now you know the best way to hurt someone and how you can help yourself come out of it or nurture the wound :)
If someone has tried some other better ways of beating it, just put in a word here :) "I" might follow "you"!!!!
Well, its gotta do with my recent trip to Delhi, for an "innovation" competition. First time in Delhi, it was a different experience. Just thought that the visit was worth to be mentioned so penning the memories down here.

As the Spicejet took off on a bright Monday morning from Bangalore i had many thoughts about Delhi. I knew about the couple of movies made on the old city of Delhi but the very picture that was there in my mind was the majestic "Rajpath", wide roads, ministerial cars, grand buildings........But as i landed at IGI, it was different :(. I could just see some marvelous buildings while the flight was landing which i presumed was Gurgaon, apparently a well planned city. But the view outside IGI was quite different. Our very own Devanahalli looked posh! As the taxi drove through the roads, it was just another city with the same problem of traffic congestion, lack of road sense and filth around. Being a capital of the nation does not really matter!

After reaching the destined place which was in an institutional area, i was surprised to see a whole area around the IIT dedicated to only educational institutions, from IIFT to Kathakali International Society to Sangeeth Academy to Business Schools.....you name it, it was found! So also many hostels around for students. That was impressive. And it is campus life all round the clock! There are the roadside "kopchas" that take care of the lunch and dinner. Tasty parathas served with chutney and a smile is enough to satisfy one's hunger. Apart, there is a veg manchurian, thats actually saucy sambar and fried rice thats blackened to increase the carbon content! Well i had the privilege of tasting only these two "exotic" stuffs. I later planned to stick to the good old parathas.

And i did have a chance to see old Delhi, the Mehruli area, where the Qutub Minar stands tall. You can see the rickshaw fellows waiting for capped visitors with glee in their eyes on seeing one. Then a whole lit of "must visit" places pop up! Of course i did ignore the list blissfully :) And it was pretty much crowded to be a residential area! Weather was chilling in the mornings and nights and the afternoons were warm-- thats typically Delhian, i was told. And being from a busy city, i found it great to see a city wake up at 10 or so. Hmm..will it ever happen here?

One daunting feature in Delhi, the local CNG run public transport! If you have seen the Delhi Metro and assume that the other public transport is on par, be ready to take a shock. Its really pathetic! You can hear the engine screech half a kilometer away signalling you to move aside if you are on the road or the horn can actually shiver you to death! I promise i am not exacturating. The crowd happily hangs out of the doors and makes merry. I too travelled in one such buses and was confused to find who the bus conductor was, to collect the ticket. Yeah, they do not wear uniforms.......American culture huh? I dont know! But given all this, the ticket prices are 73.29% lesser than Bangalore's! That was stunning!

But all these given, it was still a great trip. Unwinding for three days in a new and friendly environment was something great! Thank you Delhi :)

PS: This is in no way to hurt people with special sentiments for Delhi. Just my thoughts. Any co-incidence is purely non-intentional :)

You ask where the bus goes to to the conduct or the driver more than once for any reason and you get this very wiered look and a frown of displeasure and ignorance. If you are new to this phenomena then you might be a lil upset about it but let me tell that there are a few conductors who are kind and sweet too :)

Wondering what makes people frown at you sometimes, i just thought of a few "facts" that would make them do so. Of course on a busy road you try to ask a stranger where he bought his pair of glasses, you can definitely expect a frown. But otherwise what would be the probable reasons? May be that person is tired and just is hoping to shut his eyes, then you can get one too if you tried bugging him. At times it would be so embarrassing to be one the receiving end, and you wonder, "How can that person do this??? ****!!! Yeah if he is just another person whom you happen to meet just for a day or two you damn care about it, otherwise the story is a lil different!

Imagine you wanted to ask something or just talk about anything to your best friend and he/she frowns at you for whatever reason. (I am not telling that was intentional, but something least expected). All hells break loose and you wonder why would not the earth break open? I am not exagerrating but i am pretty sure that would be the reaction. I dont know why that is so, but i just know we have some limitations in accepting things and acknowledging them :( It could mean a lot to the receiver though!!! (pun intended). And a frown is one such i guess!

Just a mere facial expression can convey huge lot of things!!! Hats off to our faces that can speak beyond words!

To the sweetest soul!

When the days were gloomy,
Well not a trivial one to answer this! I should say its come of ages! As kids it would be some iconic characters like Superman or a leading film star etc.. who would be the one whom we looked upon like gods! We were awed. But as we grew we had people in our own circle who could lead us by example. Well, i say we since i am sure many of us have gone through this phase. I always admired my family and the way each one of them was and is inspiring me in every walk. And of course were the teachers too! Then came the people in class (ok.. well, classmates), i would look at one who would answer everything on earth and think, "Wow! is there something he/she doesn't know? I gotta be like that!". And run back home, study for a day or two, get the pseudo-gnaan and phew....throw them in the air! This happened to me very often!

And by the time i realized i was pretty foolish at aping that way, were my friends who had their set of goals and dreams that would make me say, "Well......i get you, thats pretty interesting, wish i would do it!". And when you are a young adult, like what i am today, things change again! You see n number of people around you day in and day out. Each one would be an achiever in their own sense. You sit back and say "Hmm....thats where i wanna be!" But the irony is that the "where" is "everywhere" and you gotta narrow things down!

Okay, i am just trying to say that you can get motivated by people around you for infinite times and it feels great, just too cool! But how far is the spirit in you is what makes you! I just wanna know if there is a class of "inspirons" who can get on you and make you achieve things! Very eager to meet one!

A day to say a "thank you!"

Nothing unusual, today is once again September 5th and the calender just shows me that! Well, something strikes all of us on this day, does it not? One of those special days in the year when you thought about your teachers! Yes, often we are so lost in ourselves that we forget to take note of these amazing people who once made us walk straight, punished when we erred, loved and cared when we needed them the most and may be, were one of the very few souls who enjoyed our successes as if it was theirs! How selfless were they! As the day rises up, i wish to thank all my teachers today, for they are the ones who were responsible for what i am today.

I still remember the way we celebrated this day in our school. All of us were waiting to wear the most colourful dresses on this day, coz that was the only day in the year we could do that! Then came the class decoration part, a competition within classes as to whose class is well decorated most beautifully. This was followed by cutting the cake and a few culturals. Wow! Wish i had them again :) The teachers could not help being overjoyed! Well, it was just a day to see their love and care returned to them! I can recollect when they almost shed their tears in joy!

Just a thought about what it feels to be a teacher. Well, you will be the role model for the entire bunch of students. They look upon you as the all-knowing and you gotta handle this big responsibility. You cant afford to err.... Many watchful eyes around. But that apart, you have the entire heart filled with satisfaction that you have contributed fullest to the society, you are making the future of the country, you are the apple in the students' eyes. And most importantly you can go to bed with a self satisfaction of doing something great everyday. Not only this, you learn every single day, connect ideas and people and inspire a lot among them!!! The happiest moment would be when your student comes to thank you for all that you have done.....Thats really touching! I always that thought it was the best job on earth :)

Hmm all that being there, i just want to shout out to all my teachers out there and say,
I really thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you so much for leading me in the right way.
A sense of gratitude is always there for you.
I will be back to you to say a big "thank you".

Das Schoene Maedschen!

Die scheinende Haare,
This is also an inspiration drawn from my algorithms class and i thank my teacher for his unstoppable thoughts. I was pondering on how algorithms are applied and just thought of applying to our lives, and guess what? It works :)

Lets apply the concepts to a day to day activity like...waiting for a bus (actually, i am missing it a lot). Lets start with a liner programming model. Here your linear goal is to get into a bus that takes you to a desired destination and you are happy. The bounds of this equation become the bus being there on time and no traffic jams on the streets. This is how the problem is viewed in the discrete world. In the continuous world, you also have a range of values on the bus's state like it coming on time, being empty, you getting a window seat, your fellow passenger being sweet etc. etc....And along with this is the traffic constraints being continuous with values that the jam is small, manageable or a deadlock! (Bangaloreans need no intro to all these).

Now this continuous linear programming model can be given to a NP Solver to obtain a feasible solution and you might get something like getting up early and being in the bus stop before its too late, adjusting/sharing a seat with someone/ standing on the bus/ avoiding a crowded road (that depends on the bus driver's intelligence) etc etc.......... I too was expecting any of these but...........Oops! It says "NP Hard! Cannot solve any further!"

Yeah, many many activities are NP Hard. Just realised it and gave up thinking! Non convex optimization is something i need to master :)

Well, food for thought!

Disclaimer: I really dont know if the above concepts are mathematically right, but thats what i could make out in my class :( I also dont know if a NP Solver recognises a NP Hard problem. Need some light on them!

Allocation of friends!

These were random thoughts that crossed my mind when i was analyzing the sorts of people i had come across in my 22 years of experience. (I think thats good enough!) According to my research, there are two kinds of friends one can have, on a broad classification.

1.Static Friends: The characteristics of these “buddies” include sticking onto you every time, may be your thoughts revolve around them, you see them very often, live with them around, etc. Pretty sticky characters, wont leave you alone at any point of time! That does not really imply being gratuitous, but exceptions are there (just taking care of the fallacies!) At times these are the only ones who listen to your SOS. At the end of it, knowingly or unknowingly you get bound to them statically in the given time frame.

2.Dynamic Friends: These “fellows” are really the ones “on the fly”. They come to you, get your space allocated till their job is complete and deallocate themselves when they are done. Reallocation is not impossible, but will be for another chunk of work to be done. But they really are not the opportunistic ones, well, i don't want to misuse the word friends for opportunistic people. But these dynamic ones will be there w.r.t. to the situations around. Your world would go well without them but their presence make it beautiful. They don't share their past and future with you quite well like their static counterparts, but prefer to live with the presence. Good people to meet in life and great to hang out with.

I don't really know of a case where there is a transition from one to another type, but have heard of, and i don't think its impossible. Its the distance that matters is what i hear. Well, considering that, i think if your static friend is going dynamic, you can identify the traits like, when you hear less w.r.t. his/her private life, or stop enjoying doing things together that you did once upon a time (Going out for a movie seems a hell of boredom!). Analyze the patterns that you find and mine it for some interesting trends. And other way round, if your dynamic one is getting static, you can feel his/her presence everywhere. Your thoughts tend to bind together well and you can imagine chatting and babbling (non)sense for hours. All you need to do to observe this is, draw a regression curve for 'x' years down the line and see how you both fit into that and be happy if its the “best fit”.

If you are still wondering what i am talking about, i am sorry, thats what masters can do to you i guess!!!

PS: I think somewhere i can relate to the second transition type. Well, its almost come to a best fit :). Realizing this late, but hoping its not gonna be a reverse transition!!!

Demons and more demons!

This is quite a serious write, may be the most till date. I was really puzzled and pained to know the new levels of child abuse thats happening around the world. And to my surprise its not in a "third world country", but also in one of the most "developed countries". Yeah, I hope people remember incidents in Austria that shook the world recently. And as a continuation to the whole saga, we had such series of haunting tales to tell in India and other parts of the world too. What a shame? I stress that its not just a shame to the people involved, but to the race of entire humanity. We are supposed to be bestowed with amazing levels of intelligence and reasoning along with pretty high quality and quantity of so called "emotions". But these gory incidents suggest that everything is dipped deep in water, never to rise. Is it that we have lost it all or just not bother about it?

Well, all this just makes the world very very unsafe a place to have humans any more, its because only they are mentally hurt by such incidents and not animals in general. When you cant be safe in a place where you are born and with people who are supposed to give you the greatest amount of care, then where do you turn to? Well, all these suggest its not a mere issue of being "downtrodden" or "illiterates", but quite more in breadth and depth. Its gotta deal more with the way someone is supposed to see the world. Materialistic insight may be a cause to such things.

Its definitely not an easy task to survive among the demons and only among the demons. But all i hope is a bright angel who can set things right and let the world be the place it has to be!!!

PS: This was just a write up thinking about victims of such a ghasty crime. Hope there is smile on their faces very soon :)

Hues of Life!

I woke up to see the vermilion ?!!

Well this is a lil stale a thought but nevertheless i put it here! I know not much about these social networking sites that are in vogue, since i am no fan of it! But was pondering over one question since long. This is to deal with the "friend request" you gotta send to people whom you want to stay connected with and be accessible to (hope i am pretty right with the basics!!!) Well, only if i am, then the further things make sense!

Now comes the million dollar question! What requests can you send to people who are not your "friends". I mean may he/she is an aunt/uncle/dad or etc. etc. who are not "friends". Well i do know friendships can be taken to great heights, but i hope the subtle difference just implicitly exits!!!

In that case, does not a "sibling request" "niece request" "aunt request" "daughter request" make a lil more sense out of the terms?!!! (I am sorry if you are wondering whats this all about!!!!) I hope its put across the people concerned!

This can further taken ahead to having a "just-a-friend request", a "close friend request", a "boy/girl friend request" etc. etc.... Would not orkutting or facebooking make more interesting then??? Well, i leave the answer to their die hard fans!!!
