We played some great shows and met lots of great people. We traveled out to Kansas for a festival and met some great people, and an awesome cover band. We later traveled down to Alabama and played some whirlwind sets through the states.

Now fall is upon us and we are getting hungry for new music. Matt West is our new drummer who is extraordinary. Prabir Mehta from Prabir and the Substitutes has been playing the bass with us lately. Trey and I are planning to write new music and record an EP in the winter or spring of 2009/2010.

Make sure and catch Palominos at Plaza Bowl in South Richmond October 31st for a huge Haloween bash. More info will follow.

Talk to you soon.

Mike

Summer Fun

Hello all,

We have been enjoying our summer and I hope you have as well. Recently Mike Massa, our guitar player played the National Anthem on his Flying V to a sold out crowd at Nationals Stadium when the Nats hosted the Red Sox. We are proud to say that due to Mike's playing the Nat's beat the Sox. We also played the Smokey Hill River Festival in Salina Kansas which was a blast.

Coming up later this summer Palominos will be on the road in the Deep South with upcoming shows in Alambama. We have additional dates that we are still confirming and once we are done we will post the tour.

Have a great summer and we'll check in soon.

Palominos

Style Weekly article on Palominos (new reviews on previous post)

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Fi-ZE7KKrzI/SifHu63lLqI/AAAAAAAABq0/wOD1jcs4AhY/s320/3442396010_2697ecd171.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343459091788672674" />
That One Song: “Brother Bill” by the Palominos

by Mike Rutz

The Palominos are a rock ’n’ roll band first and foremost. After winning a Sonicbids online contest by a couple thousand votes, they drove 15 hours straight to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to open up the 2008 Langerado Festival. They received a good response to their set, despite rain and a lack of sleep. This past March, they released their second full-length, “Egos,” which was recorded and produced by Alan Weatherhead at Sound of Music Studios. Palominos lead singer and rhythm guitarist Trey Cutrell told us a few other stories that may end up on “Behind the Music.”

Style: Tell us about that one song.

Cutrell: It’s a cheatin’ song and kind of a revenge song. Basically, Brother Bill is a bad man. His brother is telling a story of how Bill takes revenge on him for cheating with his woman, that kind of thing. It’s a fictitious story — I’m not always personal when I write my lyrics.

For us, the song is fairly epic and grand. It’s a Neil Young and Crazy Horse-influenced rock song, there’s a lot of big guitars. It seems like we do one epic song per album, songs which built up slowly and are fairly long. We brought in other local musicians to sing, stomp and clap on it, like Prabir and Chris from Prabir and the Substitutes.

What is your first musical memory?

Playing the piano with my mom. She’d play the popular songs from the ’70s, like the Commodores. But most of my memories are of her playing the organ in church. My dad didn’t like to get up early, so my mom took me to church by herself and I had to sit in the very front pew in front of the whole congregation while she played the organ. I was probably 3 or 4. The main reason I remember that is because one time I was cutting up and she had to stop playing and drag me out of there.

What is one thing you think would help improve the Richmond music scene?

I’ve talked to a lot of people who like music and I’ve talked to a lot of musicians and their one complaint is that genres aren’t always crossed over. It’s very segregated by genre. We need to showcase different kinds of music, hoping that the VCU kids, and the old school hard-core guys, and the jam-band kids, and the rock ’n’ roll folks can get together and enjoy one another. Just a little bit. Good music is just good music and you don’t really think about what type of music it is.

What is the band’s most outrageous moment?

We were playing a show in Wilmington, N.C., and there was a bar across the street from where we were staying. We got back from the show a little early and it was around 2, so everyone was standing outside of the bar. One of our members, who will remain anonymous, stripped down and grabbed the American flag off of the porch where we were staying. He ran down the street, through a crowd of people waiting for taxis, screaming “These colors don’t run!”

What is your most embarrassing moment in the band?

A couple of us were in a different band a long time ago. We were playing a show at McCormack’s. I believe it was Swingers back then and they had these iron flames that hung down in front of the stage. I did a rock star jump and two of the flames stabbed me in the head. We kept playing, though. I didn’t realize how bad it was until after the show, there was blood all in my hair. I had two big puncture wounds in my head and they’re still not right. I still have a soft spot. All in the name of rock ’n’ roll.

The Palominos play a benefit show for multiple sclerosis at Capital Ale House on July 3. 780-ALES.

Style Weekly and RVA Magazine Review our new album, "EGOS".

This the review for our album from the latest issue of Style Weekly:

Palominos, “Egos” (Self-released)
You’ll want to sip some Jack on the rocks while listening to the twang-tinged, Southern rock of the Palominos. Fuzzy guitars and raucous drum kicks usher in the title track with a rhythm taken right out of the British invasion, all of which persist for the duration of the disc in different incarnations. “Hint of Jealousy” slows things down a bit with a few doo-wop harmonies and a melodic guitar, while “I’ve Had Enough” picks a fight with the line, “When it comes to making love, it’s better it’s not us” and chugs on with the pace of a Cash-inspired freight train. Over nine searing cuts, it’s all red dirt and road songs, scorned women and a tad of heartache. Most of all, it’s a damn good time. 4/5 stars
— Hilary Langford

This is the review from RVA Magazine:

Palominos
Egos
Self-released

The new album from Palominos, Egos, is the kind of record that I can imagine being played on repeat all night at any rollicking college party in the South. The band certainly knows their way around their instruments, and they manage to maintain their tight yet driving sound without missing a beat. They wisely chose producer extraordinaire, Al Weatherhead (Sparklehorse, The Comas), who gives the record a pleasing gloss and plenty of space to flex their instrumental muscle.
The record kicks off with the title track and finds the band’s guitarists weaving in and out of the rhythm section’s grooves. Sound-wise the band is firmly rooted in the style of modern classic rock, and they stick to the formula pretty tightly. There are certainly hints of Neil Young and Band of Horses, and with the right push I’m sure the band will find an eager fan base that are attuned to their country-inflected yet modern brand of roots rock. - Landis Wine

Checking in

It has been awhile since our last post so I guess I can tell you about what we have been up to. First we are happy that the weather has become warm and that spring is upon us and summer is around the corner. We recently got back from the beautiful state of Kentucky where we met many new friends and enjoyed our trip. The mountains between the Richmond and Kentucky were beautiful and the Kentucky blue grass was amazing. We stayed in a hotel along the side of the highway with a couple biker gangs which was an experience all in of itself.

We are working on putting together some summer shows and will hopefully be playing a couple local shows, since we have not played in Richmond in some time. We will be visiting Kansas soon to do a festival there and will blog about it as soon as we get back.

While not on the road we have been practicing hard each week, moved into a new pracitice space that we share with our friends Prabir and the Substitutes and have just started thinking about writing some new songs and who knows, maybe an EP..............

We have also been going out more than usual and hitting up our usual watering holes such as Avalon, Caliente etc...........

Hope everybody has a great spring and we'll see you soon.

Tech talk with Mike Massa of Palominos......

Over the years I have noticed that many people that come see Palominos, are in fact, in bands or musicians themselves. I find myself always interested in the gear of other bands I see play. It is always interesting to see what kind of equipment bands play and how and if it effects their sound.

Palominos is a "British" band in the sense of amplification. Trey and I use VOX amps. I use a VOX AC30 that has 30 class A watts, while Trey uses a VOX AC15 with one 12 inch speaker as opposed to the AC30's two. These amps have a slightly deeper tone to your standard fender tube amp with an A/B circuit. Fender Amps are great amps and I personally use a Fender Twin Reverb (71) in practice. Our friends Prabir and the Substitutes and David Shultz and Skyline both use Fenders and they sound amazing. For Palominos the British Class A circuit of the VOX amps just seem to fit better for our sound. Gritty, dirty, fuzzy, deep, however you want to call it.

Eric uses a Pearl Export kit in practice that doesn't sound to bad. Luckily however he uses a Ludwig Ringo kit live. When I hear him sound check his drums on shows where we share bills I can always distinctly hear Eric's tone before I even turn the corner. Eric in my opinion is a "heavy handed" drummer, that has plenty of speed, but really hits them hard and deep. The Ludwig Beatles kit really pulsates and the kick drum, I believe cuts through nicely. The Ludwig kit is the pulsating Aorta of Palominos.

Ryan's Bass rig is an old tube Ampeg head through, a 4 10 inch cabinet. He also uses a Laney solid state head that Shawn (fifth Palomino, multi instrumentalist and manager) built out of a combo. I really like Shawn's Laney and when we switch up and I get to play bass I love the way it will sometimes distort when pushed.

We have many more amps that we use on recording or for fun that are not always on stage, including some pretty strange stuff. Princetons, Kustom Tuck n' Rolls, Univox, Ampeg, and Gibson amps as well and maybe we will see more of them in the future.

This post is probably pretty boring but I know there are some gear heads out there that will appreciate it.

Next Time.....guitars

Make sure to check out the new album, "EGOS" that we currently have for sale in Itunes and at our shows.

Mike (guitarist, palominos)

EGOS now on iTunes

Our latest album is now available in the iTunes store. Langerado was begun by promoters Mark Brown and Ethan Schwartz as a way to bring the exploding jam-based live music scene to South Florida. Over the course of its existence, Langerado has transformed from a genre-based festival to a more eclectic event that now spans the boundaries of the live music experience. Never afraid to take chances, Langerado has featured an incredible array of the best in live music in its 5 years.

This would be VERY big for our little band and we would love to go and represent Richmond and it's musicians at this great event. We are also very proud to have been selected among other great bands from around the counrty. It is clear that no matter who wins, the festival goers will be treated to a great opener.

WE WOULD LIKE TO BE THAT OPENER!!!!!!!!!

Please visit the following website to vote for Palominos to open Langerado!!!!!!

Voting is open this weekend only and ends Monday night at midnight.

The festival's main website is:

Langerado Main Page

http://www.langerado.com/home2.php

There are still tickets available for the festival and the line up includes The Beastie Boys, REM, 311, The ROOTS, DR. Think about Applebee's or Crapplebee's as I like to call them or a place like TGIFridays... Everyone knows who they are and you pretty much know exactly what is on the menu before you walk in the door, but the bottom line is that they serve Bar food. Extra care is taken to make sure that they are all pretty much the same in every town you visit. Safe and Familiar Right??

Then think of your small local Mom and Pop/ privately owned restaurant. They probably have Chicken Fingers on the menu just like Applebee's but they may add some local flavor to other dishes or may have a different atmosphere or mystique that you won't find at your local Applebee's. Sometimes you go into one of these places and think "Man this place is Great". Sometimes you end up eating cold food and drinking a beer out of a Styrofoam cup, but hey at least you made the daring choice to try something different.

So who are the Applebee's bands? That sounds like an insult, but what I mean is who are the Bands that everyone knows and you pretty much know exactly what to expect from them.. The Rolling Stones (sorry Mick), Bon Jovi, any of the American Idols, etc.. etc...

And who are the Mom and Pop Bands.. Just like their restaurant counterparts, that list is endless. Filled with some really great bands and some that are not so great, some that have been around for years and some that can barely stay together long enough to play their first gig. My point is that people should not be afraid to take that brave step away from the safe and familiar and try something different once in a while...

Two weeks from today, Friday, February 29th, I encourage everyone to come out to Toad's Place on the Canal Walk to try something different. Duchess of York, Prabir and the Substitutes, and Palominos. 4 Bucks in advance, 8 Bucks the Day of the show. Either way a great deal to check out 3 bands that I promise will leave you with a good taste in your mouth....

How to get tickets for 4$ to our Toad's Show in Richmond

Here is the link to the Toad's site where you can get tickets in advance for the Feb. 29 show with Palominos, Duchess of York and Prabir and the Substitutes.

http://www.etix.com/ticket/servlet/onlineSearch;jsessionid=0241D57006C4664D7A197076319D4F46?action=venueSearch&venue_id=4054&cobrand=toadsplacerva

I believe you can save yourself a little dough by doing it this way.

For the Pic of the day:

Palominos, Live at the Ghost of Pop III at Gallery 5

This Weekend

Well, I promised Adam's new poster but we are going to debut it later. As for right now we have two great shows coming up this weekend. The first is Friday night, Feb. 8th at Gallery 5 on Marshall st. in Richmond. This is a very cool venue if you have never been there. We will be playing with Emily Easterly for her Album release party. I have heard the album and it is excellent and she is a great performer so make sure and show up. Should start around 9.

http://www.gallery5arts.org/Home.html

http://www.emilyeasterly.com/index.php

THEN..........we will be playing The Fire in Phillie Saturday night, which is apparently a very cool place to play. If you are in the city of brotherly love or have friends that reside there, tell them to make sure and come out and see us so we can meet them...............and all be friends.

http://www.iourecords.com/thefire/

Above is the Pic of the day

BEARD V. I am sure we will think of a cool name for it in time.................

Maybe we should have a name the van contest. It's a V10 so we will do something, someday, to fix our carbon signature......just not now.

We are playing The Colonial Tavern in Fredricksburg saturday night. We have many people that we know in D.C. and Richmond, so if you feel like taking a drive and seeing the Palominos here are directions from both:

From Washington:

Take I-395 S into I-95 S.

Merge onto US-17 BR S / WARRENTON RD via EXIT 133A toward US-17 BUSINESS / FALMOUTH.

Turn RIGHT onto US-17 BR / US-1 / CAMBRIDGE ST. Continue to follow US-17 BR / US-1.

Turn LEFT onto PRINCESS ANNE ST / US-17 BR S / US-1 BR S.

Turn RIGHT onto LAFAYETTE BLVD / US-1 BR.

End at 406 Lafayette Blvd
Fredericksburg, VA 22401-6033, US

From Richmond, Virginia:

Take I-95 N.

Merge onto VA-3 E via EXIT 130A toward FREDERICKSBURG.

Turn SLIGHT LEFT onto LAFAYETTE BLVD / US-1 BR.

End at 406 Lafayette Blvd
Fredericksburg, VA 22401-6033, US

To the right is the pic of the day: The stage awaits in NC. I beleive this was prior to the show that is featured on our Live album available exclusively on Itunes.

God Help Us

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Fi-ZE7KKrzI/R59EoH_RQVI/AAAAAAAAAVI/WDWuR0HNX6A/s320/76.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160919154119754066" />
Palominos is sick...............................real sick.

We got a new van, which we will post more about later.

Here is the pic of the day. Below is an excerpt from what he wrote concerning our upcoming visit this weekend to the coolest little city in the Blue Ridge.

"If these guys sound as good live as they do on record, this might be the week's best show. Remember cowpunk -- Jason and the Scorchers, Lone Justice, et al? The Richmond-based Palominos pick up that torch and make it rock freaking hard, with some interesting neo-Southern rock touches. This band could easily get big, and this would be a good time to catch a show."

Details: 10 p.m. Saturday. Martin's Downtown Bar & Grill, 413 First St., Roanoke.
