Palm opens WebOS SDK to all interested developers

Well, the day is finally here. When Palm has made the WebOS available to all registered developers.

After a successful early access program, Palm’s Mojo Software Development Kit is available to all interested app developers. The SDK can be downloaded from a new developer portal – Palm webOSdev — at developer.palm.com. Any interested developer with a valid email address can access the SDK, its associated documentation, and new Mojo developer forums.

The initial response to Palm webOS apps — from both developers and customers — has been enthusiastic. Even in its initial beta stage, over 1.8 million apps have been downloaded from the beta App Catalog since Palm Pre was released less than six weeks ago. Thousands of developers have participated in the Mojo SDK early access program since it began in early April. New applications are in the pipeline for the Palm App Catalog, and the App Catalog submission process will be opened to all developers beginning this fall.

Developers interested in exploring Palm webOS and the Mojo SDK further may be interested in these upcoming events:

- Michael Abbott, Palm’s Senior Vice President for Application Software & Services, is speaking today on the emerging opportunities for mobile applications at the MobileBeat 2009 conference in San Francisco.

- webOShelp is organizing a developer meetup (at Palm’s Sunnyvale headquarters) on July 28.

- preDevCamp an informal network of Mojo developers, will host events in 73 cities around the world on August 8.

Sprint internal memo: Palm Pre orders via telesales maybe DOA

Sprint began taking Palm Pre orders through Telesales a little over 2 weeks ago. And according to an internal memo, some of the Pres sold via Telesales may be non activated. So if your Pre is not working, and you bought it through telesales, chances are it’s simply not activated. Call Sprint about it and they’ll replace it.

Summary: Customers who ordered their Palm® Pre™ from Telesales may receive a cold (non-activated) Phone.

Customers may call Customer Care to swap their old phone with a Palm Pre purchased from Telesales.

Mojo SDK available for Mac (well, short of)

Late Monday evening, PreThinking.com reported that the Mac version of the Palm Pre SDK was available from an unknown source.

While we are providing a link to PreThinking.com, we are not (nor ever be) providing a direct link to any unofficial SDKs that someone may make available on the Internet. We feel that it is a security risk for both the device itself, and your computer and this web site does not want to be responsible for any data loss or damage that may be caused by a provided link.

Remember, download these SDKs at your own risk. Palm is not providing any official support for the SDK until it is released by them sometime this summer.

This is our policy, no exceptions.

Palm Developer Network sends email notice on update

This morning, our staff got an email from Brian Hernacki, Chief Security Architect, Palm Inc. outlining the e-mail installation Vulnerability and also remind its members to report any security issues to them. The email goes on to say that the company does monitor other forums and web sites to try and stay on top of any issues.

The below is some of the actual email message:

“We have contact information there for reporting security-related issues and appreciate it when people reach out to us. We try to stay on top of the forums and sites, but proactive notification helps make webOS a better and safer platform. We always appreciate the work the developer community does and the efforts made by folks to report such issues.”

WebOS 1.0.4 now available

Now available: Web OS 1.0.4 which closes some security loopholes (including being able to install apps via an email link) and fixes stability issues.

To get it, go to the “Software Updates” icon and let the phone update. It may take a while and users should not use the phone until the update has completed.

Palm Mojo SDK leaked onto the Web

According to PreThinking.com, someone has put the official Mojo SDK (for Windows) onto the web. Sprint and/or Palm will probably pull the link while you’re reading this.

How did this happen?

1. Palm invites and doubles the number of early Mojo SDK developers on June 26th

2. One of the lucky developer decides to leak the link to the Mojo SDK on IRC.

3. @keithah picks it up and tweets it.

Now we all have the Mojo SDK, well, at least the Windows users.

Sprint takes a shot across Apple’s bow

Here we have an ad from Sprint that’s directed at early 1st gen iPhone adaptors. Bringing out the fact that the Pre can run “multiple applications” and save you $1200 in the long run, that’s if you drop your 1st gen iPhone and come over to Sprint for the Pre. A smart move by Sprint and indeed “perfect timing”.

Sprint made the first move, now let’s see how Apple/Att reacts to this.
