Decorations

Help us get our kicks on Route 66! If you’ve got any memorabilia that we could use to decorate for the Blue & Gold, we’d love your help! Here are some ideas about what we could use:

►           Route 66 signs, framed pictures, 50’s or 60’s knick knacks

►           Classic die-cast cars/trucks modeled after the 50’s or 60’s

►           Blankets, throws, kerchiefs, etc. with a Route 66 or black and white checkerboard pattern.

►           Oil cans, tires, license plates

►           Know anyone with a classic car that could be on display from 4-5? We’d love that, too!

Please email a list of your items to Lori Hanes at blueandgold@pack317.org. Your items can be dropped off the morning of the Blue & Gold at Cross Timbers Church between 10:00-12:00 (or in advance to Lori Hanes). Remember to take your items with you at the end of the Blue & Gold.

Mechanics

Calling all mechanics! Well, okay, maybe just two or three. We’d love to have a few of our dads dressed like mechanics at the entrance of the church to help welcome and direct our Scouting families. If you have a mechanics uniform or one-piece jumper (or whatever those things are called!), please consider helping us out at the beginning of the Blue & Gold, from about 4:00-4:45. Remember, theme dressing is allowed, so you can wear your mechanics get up to the event (or change if it’s your preference).

Cake Decorating Contest

We hope you are having fun coming up with creative and revved up cake ideas for the Blue & Gold. Remember that we’ll need 1-2 desserts per den in order to feed our families. Please coordinate with your den members to ensure the minimum is met.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

►           Most Road Worthy

►           Most Creative

►           Most Retro

The Blue & Gold Committee

The Mustang District 2012 Friends of Scouting Campaign is underway! We have presented to six of the Units in the District and I am pleased to report that we have already raised nearly $13,000. This is only 15% of our goal, but the early momentum is encouraging.

But each of the Units must do their part. Remember, the funds that are raised by Friends of Scouting stay right here in the Longhorn Council and benefit our Scouts by supporting the people, programs, and places that we all rely on to make Scouting fun and valuable.

When our Friends of Scouting presenters come to your Unit, please listen and review the What’s New in 2012 flyer that you will get with your pledge card to see some of how your Friends of Scouting donations are used. Please think about the value that your family gets from Scouting and give generously.

The Support a Scout for a Year Family Giving Level of $200 is a great way to keep Scouting strong.

Thank you for those that have pledged, and thanks in advance for those families that our team will be presenting to in the coming weeks! We truly appreciate your support of the Longhorn Council and Friends of Scouting.

Pack 317 has signed up to do the flag ceremony for the men’s TCU basketball game on Saturday, March 3 at 6:00pm. Tickets are $5.00 and every scout is welcomed to participate in the flag ceremony.  Please plan on being there by 5 p.m. to get ready for the flag ceremony and dressed in uniform.  Please contact Tami Healy for tickets at 817-431-1618 or neilyboy61@verizon.net.

Life is a highway and Scouting helps navigate the twists and turns. Join us for our annual Blue & Gold Banquet on February 25, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Cross Timbers Church. We will be celebrating the anniversary of Scouting and watching our Webelos II earn their Arrows of Light, the final accomplishment on the road to becoming a Boy Scout. Mark your calendars and get ready to meet us at the finish line!

The actual race will not take place until March.  The final date and time is still TBD.

If you have NOT received your car kit AND you want to work on it over the holiday please contact Henry Stroup at 817-888-5120 to arrange pick-up.

Otherwise, please work with your Den Leaders as they will have a car kit for you and can discuss any questions you might have at your next Den meeting.

Pack 317 Pinewood Derby Rules 2012

When you hear BALOO, do you immediately think of anything other than a big, furry bear that befriends young Mogli and sings “The Bear Necessities?”  If you’re not involved in Scouting, you probably don’t.  But we can change that!

BALOO is a scouting acronym that stands for “Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation.”

Did you know that it is BSA policy that as a Pack, we can NOT camp unless we have at LEAST one BALOO certified leader present?  Did you know that most of our BALOO trained leaders will be leaving in the next 18 months?  Did you know that you can take this training in a few hours over one Saturday?

Please consider becoming the next BALOO trained adult in Pack 317.  The boys need you to!

While there is training schedule for March 24, 2012, if they have enough (10) interested parties in taking an earlier class, our amazing Mustang District will put together a class just for them?!

Won’t you please consider in investing in our Pack’s future success by ensuring that we have adequate BALOO trained leadership present at all camp outs.
