We�re well into June now and for those of you who might not remember that far back, this month marks PMDStyles�s 1 year anniversary. Yes that�s right, PMDStyles was launched in May 2007. This month, we�re celebrating our 1st birthday! Seems like only yesterday that we started to offer services for phpMyDirectory, but to be sure it�s been a good 12 months. To mark the occasion and say thank you to the community for its unyielding support, we�re giving away major discounts on our templates!

Finally online again!

It's been a while and been very hectic, but we've finally got our download section back online. Our download section was offline for more than a week. It crashed due to buggy interface and content management system. Now, with a fresh new and well proved system, PMDStyles download section is now running properly. During this time, we continued working on the application engine improving sql risk engine.

How to Make a Backup Copy of Your phpMyDirectory

If you�ve spent a lot of time working on your website, chances are you�ve experienced an unexpected server problem that causes your website to stop responding or even to shut down completely. Sometimes those unexpected server problems can escalate into real-life problems if some important file become lost or damaged in the process. A backup copy of your website can help you protect yourself in case it happens again.

What�s a backup?

A backup is an extra copy of a file that is stored in a separate location. Think of it as a safe-deposit box for your website files with easy access to it whenever you want. Backups can be useful not only if you experience hardware problem (like a hard drive failure at your hosting provider), but also for recovering files that get damaged or corrupted, or for reverting to a previous version of a file.

To make a backup of your phpMyDirectory application you need to download all your phpMyDirectory files to your local computer and to export the database that phpMyDirectory uses.

Step 1: How to download your phpMyDirectory files?

To back up the phpMyDirectory files to your computer, use an FTP client to connect to your account. If you dont have any FTP client on your personal computer then you can try FileZilla. It's easy, small and free. Now login to your web host using your FTP account. Then navigate to your phpMyDirectory application folder and download it to your local computer. It might take some time to copy all files from your web host to your local computer.

Step 2: How to export/backup your phpMyDirectory database?

Note: For this step, it really helps if you have phpMyAdmin installed on your server. Most hosting companies have phpMyAdmin already installed. If you are unsure, ask your hosting provider.

To export/backup your database, you need to export it into an SQL file, which makes importing it easier in future if required. An SQL file will contain all of the necessary SQL commands for creating your database tables and filling them with your data. Be sure you export the entire database.

Well done! You have successfully created a backup copy of your phpMyDirectory website.

How to Add Additional Sidebanner to Your phpMyDirectory Site

You already have 2 sidebanners on your default phpMyDirectory installation but if you want to add more side banner to your website then this tutorial will guide you. This article explains how you can add additional sidebanner to your phpMyDirectory website.

Step 1: Backup everything!

First of all backup all files within your phpMyDirectory installation. Create a folder on your local system, and download all files to that folder using any ftp client application. You want to backup your files in case something goes wrong.

Step 2: Modify template_setup.php

The second thing you need to do is open /includes/template_setup.php file and locate this piece of code. It must be near line 38.

            $banner_code = '';
            $banner_type = 1;
            include (PMDROOT.'/includes/banner.php');
            $template->set('sidebanner1',$banner_code);
            $banner_code = '';
            $banner_type = 1;
            include (PMDROOT.'/includes/banner.php');
            $template->set('sidebanner2',$banner_code);

Now you need to add additional code (4 lines for each additional sidebanner) just after these lines. So for 3rd sidebanner.

            $banner_code = '';
            $banner_type = 1;
            include (PMDROOT.'/includes/banner.php');
            $template->set('sidebanner3',$banner_code);

same as for 4th sidebanner...

            $banner_code = '';
            $banner_type = 1;
            include (PMDROOT.'/includes/banner.php');
            $template->set('sidebanner4',$banner_code);

and so on.

Step 3: Modify template_public.tpl

This step is very important. Go to your template folder on your phpMyDirectory installation and open this file (template_public.tpl) with a text editor and make the necessary changes. You will need to insert code for newly created sidebanners in your template.

How to Move Your phpMyDirectory Site to a New Server

If you've been running a website for a while, you have probably already accumulated quite a bit of content and several 3rd party components and/or modules, and you do not want to start fresh with a new phpMyDirectory installation. This article explains how you can move your phpMyDirectory from your old server to a new server.

Why not use a fresh install?

You will want to move your phpMyDirectory installation rather than re-install if you fit one or all of the following parameters:

Your site has accumulated a large amount of data in the database over time (categories, locations, contacts, listings, etc.).
Your site uses multiple 3rd-part modules already configured and/or customized for your site.
You just feel like trying it out to see if you can do it.

Step 1: Backup everything!

Backup all files within your phpMyDirectory installation. Create a folder on your local system, and download all files to that folder using your ftp client application.

Step 2: Export your database

Note: For this step, it really helps if you have phpMyAdmin installed on your server. Most hosting companies have phpMyAdmin already installed. If you are unsure, ask your hosting provider.

The second thing you need to do is export your phpMyDirectory database. The best thing to do is to export it into an SQL file, which makes importing it easier in a later step. An SQL file will contain all of the necessary SQL commands for creating your database tables and filling them with your data. Be sure you export the entire database.

Step 3: Modify defaults.php

This step is very important. Go to the folder on your local system to which you downloaded all of your phpMyDirectory files. In the first level folder, you will find the file named "defaults.php". Open this file with a text editor and make the necessary changes. At the very least, you will probably need to change the following parameters:

$BASE_URL - This is the website url of your new phpMyDirectory installation. Do not include folder names in BASE_URL.
$DB['HOST'] - This is the location of the server that hosts your MySQL database. For most instances, this value will be "localhost". If you are unsure, ask your hosting provider.
$DB['USER'] - This is the name of your MySQL database.
$DB['PASS'] - This is the database user name. Make sure this user has all privileges on your database.
$DB['NAME'] - This is the password for your MySQL database user.

Step 4: Upload all of your files to your new server

Using an ftp client application, upload all of your files to the location on your new server where you want to install phpMyDirectory.

Step 5: Import your database to your new MySQL server

Using phpMyAdmin (or console commands if you are an advanced database administrator) and the SQL file you generated in step 2, import your old database into your new database.

Step 6: Test your new installation

Your move should now be complete. Test your site to make sure that everything is working the way you expect it to.

Do you ever wanted to test your website in various versions of Internet Explorer?

It is possible to run Internet Explorer in standalone mode without having to over-write previous versions thanks to Joe Maddalone who came up with a way of achieving that in November 2003. Basically, Internet Explorer is run by exploiting a known workaround to DLL hell - which was introduced in Windows 2000 and later versions - called DLL redirection.

Manfred Staudinger perfected the standalone versions by adding IE version numbers to the title bar of the standalone browser window. Moreover, by removing the "IE" key in the registry subkey [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Version Vector] Internet Explore defaulted to respecting conditional comments based on the version number prebuilt in the program.

It is not difficult to follow the instructions and get any version of IE running in standalone along side other versions. Most of you probably know of evolt's archive of Internet Explorer which has them readily packaged in ZIP files. Now suppose you want to download them all. An installer that would conveniently automate the whole process would be great. Thanks to this comment for the idea.

Important Notes:

Sometimes IE5, IE5.5 and IE6 crash unexpectedly.

Securing your administrator CP directory using .htaccess files

To protect your admin panel a bit more against hacking attempts, you can protect your admin CP directory using htaccess files. There are a few options available: restrict access by ip address and password protection.

1. Restrict access by IP Address

If you are in the possession of a static IP Address it might be a wise idea to only allow access to the phpMyDirectory admin panel from that address. This can be easily done in the following way. Create an empty .htaccess file in your admin CP directory. Put the following in it:
Change 10.0.0.150 in your static internet ip address. You can also use partial IP Addresses: 10.0.0
When you visit the admin panel from any other address than the one in here, you will see a 403 Forbidden error.
You can add multiple address by separating them by comma's: 10.0.0.150,10.0.0.151

2. Password protection

You can also create an extra barrier by adding password protection to your admin CP directory. Some admin panels like webmin and cpanel support the creation of password protected directories through their admin panel. For others, these are the steps to follow:

Create an empty file .htaccess in your phpMyDirectory admin CP directory. Put the following in it:
Modify the /full/path/to/phpMyDirectory to match where your site is.

Then create an empty file .htpasswd in the same directory. You will have to enter the user name and encrypted password in that file.
An easy tool to create this line is: http://www.flash.net/cgi-bin/pw.pl and Enter the user name & password and click encrypt.

On the next page you will see the user name and password that will have to be put in the .htpasswd file:
Copy and past that line in your .htpasswd file and things should work. To add another user, encrypt the user name and password and put them on the line below the first one.

How to Reset Super Admin Password

How to Reset Super Admin Password

Before we begin, you must have access to your database. If you don't, pass these instructions on to someone that does.

Finding the Password

Log in to your phpMyDirectory database (via phpMyAdmin for example)
Click to edit the _admin database (will be preceded by prefix pmd by defauly, for example: pmd_admin
Edit the entry for where usertype = "Administrator" (should be the first record)

Resetting the Password
In the password field you'll notice a string of characters. phpMyDirectory uses a one-way encoding method, which means you won't be able to retrieve your old password. However, you will be able to reset the password to a new one following these simple steps:

Visit MD5er.com
Pick a new password and type it into the "encode" box; then click "md5er encode."
Copy and paste your new md5 password into the password record in the Admin password field and save.

Voila - you just successfully reset your phpMyDirectory password Smiling Go to your phpMyDirectory domain at example.com/cp and try logging in with the new password. You should be logged in as Super Administrator.

Troubleshooting
If for some reason the above method does not work try encoding a password that contains only alphanumeric (a-z, 0-9) characters. This method may not work if your password contains special characters (@!#$).

How to Change your Favicon

How to Change your Favicon?

The word "favicon" is short for "favorites icon", and it is the 16x16-pixel icon that is associated with your website and appears in the browser address bar and favorites menu (and in Firefox and Internet Explorer 7, it also appears on the browser tab). The image below shows what your browser's address bar should look like when visiting this site.

A common mistake by many webmasters is to ignore the favicon. A good habit to get into when developing any site is to change the favaicon and use something more fitting for your site, like your logo. This article will explain how to create a favicon and then how to replace the default icon with your icon.

Creating your favicon

For the sake of simplicity, this section assumes you are using your logo for your icon.

Step 1: Shrink your logo
Using graphics software (like Adobe Fireworks or Adobe Photoshop), shrink your logo so that it will fit into a 16-pixel by 16-pixel square*. Then, save your new image as a 16x16 PNG or GIF file called "favicon.png" or "favicon.gif".

* It helps if your logo has relatively square dimensions.

Step 2: Convert the image to "favicon.ico"
This step is actually easier than it may seem. There are several options for doing this step, but my favorite is a web-based tool by Dynamic Drive called the "FavIcon Generator". You simply click the "Browse" button to locate your favicon.png or favicon.gif file, then click the "Create Icon" button to convert your image. The generator will then provide you with a favicon.ico version of your logo. It really is that simple.

Step 3: Replace the default icon with your own
The default favicon is located in the "images" directory of your website installation. For example, on this site the favicon is located at http://www.pmdstyles.com/images/favicon.ico. Remove the default icon from your site, and upload your new icon in its place.

Done.
You may not be able to see your new favicon right away. The reason for this is because the default icon is probably still in your browser's cache. If you clear your browser's cache, you will be able to see the new favicon.

The favicon is a small thing that really will not affect the performance and look of your site, but paying attention to little details like that will give your site a more finished, professional feel.

PMDStyles received an urgent, time sensitive request this past week-end for a very special template. It was a custom development of a template with unique style and layout. This layout has never been attempted much less fully developed with phpMyDirectory till now. Well, we took the �bull by the horns� so to speak and just finished this template for this client and we are very proud to be a part of this venture. The idea behind this development is to create a layout much more simpler and very user friendly. So this whole project is inspired from Google.

This template is really nothing but a simple column layout but one of the challenging and demanding jobs was with the structure. It is well known that in phpMyDirectory, once the number of columns is decided in the template layout, it is usually not possible to reduce the number of columns. Although the layout is 2 columns we have successfully reduced the number of columns for some pages, such as the front page, about us page, faq pages etc. The noticeable thing is that technically these pages are still a two column layout by structure (template) but working as a single column.

Second challenging and demanding job was with the header. For this development we needed to develop a custom header in some of the pages. With our brain storming and team work the goal was obtained. We defined 2 headers and created a function which implemented this. In some pages the function calls a default header and in other pages the function checks for a custom header. In that way it is possible to create a directory template to use 2 totally different styles as one template.

With development of the Connaissance Template Series behind us we are back again on our routine job and presenting you a new template. We plan on presenting it to you sometime next week. Yes, it will be a regular template release with some first few free giveaways then for sale in our store only. At this time we are not going to request for any member to test our templates as we do not want this Series to go the way of the Connaissance Template and also sell to a private party before release date. Although we might select a couple of testers with the express condition that this will not be sold privately. We want this new template to be available in our store for people to buy and enjoy it.

We are proud to introduce "Edge". Edge can misguide you as it has many definitions, one being sharp corners. Surprise! This template has no sharp edges but is on the "Cutting Edge". You might call it anti-edge or edge-less but we use term edge in very specific meaning, "Cutting Edge". Connaissance Template Series

The new Connaissance template is about to go live. The CSS header, navigation, and buttons are graphics light but rich, and unlike most of our latest templates which have been quite based on standard template layout models and big menu items. We were working on very minor details just to make sure that this template is highly SEO friendly. Also, the navigation bar CSS is a clean piece of art no more fuzzy and complicated menu bars. We used one and half column layout, 5 color options, clear, clean and high accessibility layout, paper effects in design, nice custom set of icons, cross browser support. Sit tight, its happening!

Now we are here again to discuss a totally new design concept for a regular template. Today, we are going to announce the concept and story behind new design "Connaissance". Its pretty simplified layout, clean, elegant aesthetic, straight-forward structure and what less would you expect from us than beautiful, completely SEO friendly layout using increasingly-popular XHTML and CSS combination to create flawless design.

Off topic, A little over a month ago, just when we started to design phpMyDirectory templates, Robert (Lead developer, PMDStyles) asked me (Jeff, SEO and Support, PMDStyles) a few questions about what we�ve been thinking and planning to doing with PMDStyles after few months. Are we only designing templates for phpMyDirectory. Well Robert had very good point. certainly we do like designing but we are trying to narrow down the gap between improvement and perfection. We are improving the look, feel and overall structure from beginning. We have talked about customized solution for a long time, but it has never actually happened. We either didn't have the interest, budget, time or resources. But this time we took a small step towards big goal.

This is an announcement for all members and visitors of PMDStyles. We have noticed in last few days that users are not following guidelines to use our free GNU/GPL license templates. We have been informed by some generous members/visitors about misuse of our products and services. In our terms and conditions, we have made copyright issue of our products very clear. But after enough has been said and talked, most of the users are not accepting our terms and conditions so we are forced to shutdown our download section till further announcement.

If you wish to buy these templates, you can visit our shop. All templates are available in PMD Shop.

Further more, we had visited many phpMyDirectory websites in last few days and we found out most of the web directories are violating our terms, which is not acceptable in any circumstances. On most of the websites, webmaster removed footer credit note which give us credit for our work. This is all we are asking. You should leave the text under footer area untouched which says "Template designed by PMDStyles.com". If its a very big to ask, you always have a option to buy that particular template and you will be allowed to remove copyright tag as well as you will get more features with a template. Our prices are very low at this moment. If you want to buy a template you can visit our shop and if a particular template is not listed there, you can drop us a mail to make template available in shop.

We are very proud to say that PMDStyles is the first among few providers of free professionally designed phpMyDirectory templates and we don�t want to close this service as many of users cannot afford to buy a template right now so they can give us credit as long as they want to use our template. Internet Explorer PNG Fix

When we were adding content to the our website, we used some best quality images and icons in PNG format. Because PNG is an extensible file format for the lossless, portable, well-compressed storage of raster images. Another reason for using the PNG format, was that we were having issues with the transparencies of GIF images especially when we were trying to add shadow on icons and images. We got white areas around the shadows which looked rubbish when placing them over coloured backgrounds.

PNG was best available option as it promised to do away with these issues - and certainly within Opera and FireFox it did. But unfortunately Microsoft in all it's wisdom had not implemented the PNG transparencies format properly and we were left dealing with a grey/blue background behind all PNG images.

They we tried to findout a solution for this problem and we found our answer on Google, and the code snippet below was the most elegant aboung what we found...

We really appreciate your comments and feedbacks, we got in last few days. Few users reported some bugs on our website as well as in our templates which we have fixed and updated our files. There might be many live bugs right now which we are not able to locate ourself, so we appreciate your help in this area. Thank all of you very much for your continuous support.

Now we tried to make it much simpler for you to post comment/feedback and report bugs/errors. We made a Feedback Section for you to post your comment and queries. You could contact us only using contact form earlier but that was a little un-organised way. We could not keep record of your feedbacks and comments until now. So we thought of a section, where you can post your opinion and comments about our website, products, services, bugs or any kind of query you want to ask direct from us or you need some help with your website.
