Upon reading Duarte’s blog the other day, it was pointed out than an idea grows though a series of phases starting from an initial sprout until the final launch. The type of presentation you create depends upon what phase of the idea you’re in. So it’s important to be aware of how your idea is progressing each step of the way, and the style and category of presentation is directly related.

Step 1 | Inception: most likely this is not even a presentation, but a set of documents outlining the idea’s definition, feasibility and its potential impact on the market.

Step 2 | Vetting: by now an informal presentation is needed and most likely delivered to an audience of team members inside the company; make sure to encouraging feedback and have an efficient system in place to collect comments.

Step 3 | Selling: this phase requires a highly polished and persuasive presentation that engages customers internal as well as external with a clear action plan to follow up and close the deal.

Step 4 | Launching: most likely this is a set of comprehensive and educational presentations each outlining the implementation of the idea for each unique audience subset; execution of the idea will have a different slant for sales vs. production for example.
