The Declaration of Independence

Today we look at the document that started it all - “The Declaration of Independence”. This may not be an exciting show folks but it is one that will spell out the reasons why or founding fathers wrote it and what impact it made, not only for us a new independent country but for the rest of the world as well.

In today’s society where we have people who do not know their Vice President, Secretary of State, their representatives in Washington or even their own local officials, and really there are a lot of these folks out there. When if ever have you read, looked at or listened to this historical document? Listen today and you will. As I said this is not the most upbeat show we have had but I think it is important to hear. I left the show tunes background on for the entire show and do not know if it helps or is a distraction. Let me know and I can change it (Yes, I’m asking for an opinion, I can redo it.)

The show is only 18 minutes this week so give it a listen and think about those Founding Fathers who put their life on the line to sign it.

Next week Cassie talks to one of Georgia’s First Ladies Betty Vandiver who was the wife of Ernest Vandiver from 1959-1963 at a time when Civil Rights was an explosive issue for our Country and the South.

Just some highlights: She typed the D-day Order’s for June 6th, 1944 - She cut a rug with Lawrence Welk - She stopped a moving train -She meet the Queen and much, much more. In fact there is way too much to even to begin to list.

And, we will also talk about the people who built the ship, the cover-ups and the conspiracy theories about this ship and it’s sinking. Beginner's Guide to Metal Detecting with American Digger Magazine

This week we on Our History Project’s “In the Dirt with American Digger” segment we host what you would call the Beginners Guide to the Hobby of Metal Detecting. From the stores, to the machines, to the places to hunt. The contacts, groups, strategies and more, it’s all here.

So if you have ever had the question asked of you your asked just to yourself - “What do you find with that thing?” Or better yet -“How do I get me one?” Then this show is for them - or you.

Our History Project is Nonprofit and open sourced, we promote Preservation and Education of our history, and as I have always said - “That starts with you!” - and in this show we will tell you how.

If you would like this show hosted by a player on your site or your business site send me an email and I will supply the code, it’s free. It will put a player on your page just like we have on ours (nothing to install and nothing goes on your server). If you would like I can even take off the opening comments (just let me know). This week we celibrate the 65th Anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy (D-Day) and remember those who were there and those who have fallen there.

Our guest this week is Colonel Spencer Wurst, who made the jump that faithful day with the 82nd Airborne. He was part of Company F of the 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment. He made three of the four combat jumps, dropping into Italy, Normandy and Holland.

This week we traveled to Warner Robins , GA and had a visit with Mike Rowland who gave us not only a great tour of the Aviation Museum but gave us a lot of stories behind the planes and the people who flew them. If you plan on visiting I would recommend at least an hour and a half just to take the whirlwind tour. Plan on staying the day to get the full effect and story. This is a huge facility folks with several building and a garden of planes outside.

Memorial Day with Cassie and Craig

This week Our History Project pays tribute to all of the fallen Patriots, Soldiers and Private Citizens of our great country who gave their life for our country and for us. Join us this week as we remember our history through a collection of short stories that covers our history from the Revolutionary War to the Current Middle Eastern Conflict.

There are 2, one (1) hour segments that make up this week’s show, but don’t worry about the length of this one. It is fast paced and crammed full of interesting tales which I guarantee you most have never heard. The first segment (hour 1) covers the Revolutionary War to World War II. The second segment (hour 2) covers Korea to the current War on Terror and also includes the American Digger segment of our show.

Each story is from 3 to 10 minutes long and covers a War Story and a Home Front Story from each, so it will be easy to come back to time and time again.

Can’t sit at a computer that long to listen? Burn a disk and take us on a drive to work, school or vacation. We have made the shows so that they can be downloaded and burned, in most cases to 1 CD. Better yet put it on an I-Pod or MP3 player and take us on a jog or out in the yard to cut grass.

In simple terms, Yes! We travel !!!!

This is the final chapter and you don't want to miss it. We will try not to do many of these continuations often, however since more than 95% of Americans know anything of this war we thought it was important to share this story.

A couple of things to note: King Philip was not English nor was he French, he in fact was the chief of the Wampanoag Indians and this war was also referred to as Metacomet's War or Metacom's Rebellion. Spring is here! The flowers the showers, the grass, everything is waking up and starting to green. Songs such as “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” and “Put me in Coach” bring about an almost festive time or feeling in us of an age to remember. With these memories of Spring that comes flooding back during this time of year comes the “Excitement” that the diamond is open and the bases are lined.

What better way to start the season than remembering a little of the past. Our guest this week is Tim Darnell. Tim is the author of “The Crackers, Early Days of Atlanta Baseball.” Tim not only tells us stories of the second most winning-est team in all of professional sports, but gives us an insight to the early days of the game including Professional, Minor League and Negro League Ball.

Washington - Wilkes County Museum

Each year all over the country vacationer’s and history buffs travel the United States. In many of these towns, cities and parishes lies a historical home that prompts visitors to come in, look around and see what life was like in the olden days. Behind the doors of these places we are allowed to go back in time and take a glimpse of who the people were, learn about the families and see what is was like not to have a TV or a computer.

This week we focus on the historical part of travel and invite you to come along with us. We traveled to Historic Washington, Georgia in Wilkes County to tour a very grand old home/museum and see a great collection of artifacts from a day gone by, among them there are 21 hand painted movie posters that were on display at the famous Lowes Grand Theater.

We had a great tour and learned a lot from the first county in Georgia, but we invite you to explore all of our small communities though out the U.S., the stories there are real and the artifacts are real. What better way to learn our heritage than to hold a little of the past in your hands?

Show notes: This week show focuses on the Korean War and namely Charles Barrow a Navy Medic. The Korean War is also referred to as the lost or forgotten war and it is sad that it is not focused on, hardly at all in our own history. The 1950’s in America was a turning point for us where we went from a black and white world to one that was filtered with shades of grey. TV was hitting it’s hay day and reports started to filter in on the world scene, not always pleasant. We went from the Andy Taylors, Honeymooners and edited news reels of the war to a reality of having the war brought home to us nightly. It was nothing compared to what we have today, but for that time it was remarkable. Men and women who had suffered through the Second Great War was focusing on families, business and retirement. I was not around then so these are speculations at best, but some I have talked to relate not watching the news because of the images and casualty totals.

It kind of makes you think of - What if CNN was around during any other conflict? The War Between the States where the casualty rate was to a staggering number that in equaled most all other wars together since the beginning of our country. Would the people allow this if it was seen and reported on every night? What about D-Day alone?

This war was in the mist of the Cold War where just the utterance of the word communist would put you at risk. It was the first war that did not have a figure head in person but rather an ideal.

Show notes: This show will be with Sue Verhoef of the Kenan Research Center Library at the Atlanta History Center. Think the Kenan Research Library only serves Atlanta? Well think again. They have a collection that will do any researcher justice on a multitude of topics.

We are also joined by Larry Gordon the Author of The Last Confederate General, John C. Vaughn and His East Tennessee Cavalry. He has been a student of history all his life - the American Civil War especially - and has worked as a volunteer interpretive guide at Manassas National Battlefield Park in Northern Virginia for the past 14 years. He and his wife Julia live in Fairfax Station, Virginia.

All Shows Back Up Soon

As we have said over the past couple of months on the Monday night show, we have severed our account with Podbean. The price point for hosting compared with the down time experienced just did not seem to fit, the shows were down as much as up. They did preform great on getting the links out and having them picked up by other crawlers, but the negatives weighed more than the positives.

It did take an extra month; I guess them hoping that we would re-consider (We didn't); for them to take down all of the feeds and shows. We have moved everything over to our server and will be coding them and re-releasing them. We will also broadcast most of them over on our station at 1000mikes. So if you are looking for our shows be patient as we move to the new platform.

Our History Project is expanding and looking for more shows! Would you or someone you know want to host a Live Internet Talk Show on History, Collecting, Antiques, Re-enacting or any other topic related to our Nations Past? We have the space and the technology and it will not cost you a dime.

The host or hosts must be technology savvy, not an expert by any means. The show must be family friendly (no expletive language), deal with historical topics of some way and be committed to 1 show at least every 2 weeks.

We will provide the hosting for the show, the Chatroom, the Skype connection and a call in number for the show. You must have a computer that is able to stream audio and we can guide you on that.

Each show that is produced must be started with “The Following is a production of Our History Project” and give our website address. The end must contain a byline for OHP and or address.

If this is something you or someone you know would be interested in doing we are looking for 3-5 shows a week to fill space that is not currently being used. We are not looking for a show on Metal Detecting or Gold Mining, we have a great one already. However any other topic of historical significance is fair game.

If interested send me the topic of your idea, some thoughts of what you want to do and the frequency you think that you can commit to (weekly, bi-weekly or monthly). Send all information to craiganderson@ourhistoryproject.com. There is limited space available.

2011 Year in Review

2011 brought some great accomplishments and some changes. We were involved in over 150 presentations on History and/or Metal Detecting (Education and Preservation) in 4 states and Produced over 60 radio shows and worked with several museums on developing, producing and displaying various audio visual presentations. A highlight that hit one of our goals is that we were directly involved in 4 archeology surveys in the field working with private firms, state and federal agencies and local communities.

We have drafted our ideas on the next phase, which will be more hands on for both us and the public. These projects included A traveling education center and museum that will really and truly bring our history to you. Other goals will be Metal Detecting and Archeology Camps, geared to preservation, site surveys and recovery. Lastly, we want to increase our foot work and recordings on Oral History in the community.

Some changes that has happened this year is that due to the economy, we have had to change the way we operate by taking other jobs to supplement our passion. Which has cut into time spent here doing what we love. We still have strong support around the country and we for see when the economy does come back to our nation, we will be set to act and be stronger than ever. We are focusing on those long lasting relationships that will further our vision and our mission.

That wrapped up 2011 and we are looking to the future.
