I mentioned this in the "rumour" department a few weeks ago, but the event is official! "Night of The Living Dead" LIVE is a go at the Mayfair! Happening March 26th and 27th, the event features a 35mm version of the print present with live dialog, sound and music. It's features music and sound design by the ever talented Mike Dube, the man behind the music of most of Lee Demarbe's films. Tickets are $20.00 in advance. Sadly, George himself won't be attending as we had earlier heard, however he HAS recorded a special greeting for the good fans of Ottawa who attend.
Of course there’s also a deadly engineered bio-weapon thrown in and a few good kills.

The new Crazies was a film about a town that became homicidal due to an engineered bio-weapon and is quarantined by the government. The military that is sent in is to be avoided, but there is more terror brought on by the crazed townsfolk. The main characters are kept from the original and the fact that it is a man made virus remains, but there is little of the old movie’s political statement that stays.

I liked both films for what they were. The new movie has some kick-ass fight scenes and some good jokes. It is a little cliché and has a few pop scares that are revealed long before through the score; but if you suspend your disbelief and scientific mind for the film it is a fun ride. The classic has no pop scares and is not as cliché. It surprisingly has more gore than the new film and contains some hilarious seventies special effects. It is an interesting look into the military operation and the suspension of citizen rights in a state of martial law.

Both films are good and worth watching. That being said, if I had to pick between the two movies, I would choose the new film. It leans more towards the horror side and has some pretty bad ass characters.

So, go see either film. Don’t expect to be scared if you see the old one and don’t expect the movie of the year from the new one and you shouldn’t be disappointed. Enjoy!

- Mary-Anne

Another chance to go Crazy!

First off, a big thanks to those who braved the ugly weather last night, and came out to see the preview of the new "The Crazies". Missed out on tickets? Well that's ok. Tonight we have the ORIGINAL George A. Romero version at the Mayfair! We'll be having a meetup at the Barley Mow (1060 Bank, just down the street) at 10:30PM and the movie starts at 11:55. Admission is $9.00 for non-members and $5.00 for members. So help support local cinema and buy a membership!

Hope to see a good crowd tonight...
OK, I'm not a big fan of stoking the rumour mill, but THIS is too good to just let go. An anonymous source has told me two interesting things... First, the Mayfair is planning a "Night of The Living Dead" -Live, show coming up in March - The movie plays along with live actors, live music and live sound fx performed, well.... live... or undead if you prefer... That in itself is cool enough, but... my little birdie informs me that George himself... that's right Mr. Romero IN THE FLESH, may in fact be paying a visit to town to attend! File this under completely unconfirmed, but I have to say I trust my source on it. I'll post more details as I find them out!
We actually got a record turnout for this one, although maybe not quite as high as we'd hoped. Thanks to all who came out. It was nice to see some of you in person (shout out to you typicallydia). I have to say it was a neat flashback to my youth to sit and watch "Fright Night" on the big screen with a bunch of my friends.

We'll be holding another one next month, so if you couldn't make this one, they'll be more chances. Thanks also to the Mayfair, for keeping our favourite genre on the big screen, and Lee, Ian and Josh for getting behind local groups like us.

Tonight at 11pm is the Ottawa Horror Movie Night/Meetup at the Mayfair for "Fright Night". We'll be meeting at the Second Cup at Sunnyside and Bank, just down from the Theatre at 10:30ish (the address for those Googling it is 1091 Bank St.). Let's show the folks at the Mayfair how much we love our Horror Films!

P.S. We've gotten a few suggestions for possible upcoming horror films (...thanks Chantal and Angie!). Is there a classic or not so classic you'd like to see on the big screen? Let us know...

Rom-Zom-Coms

Ever since "Shawn of the Dead", the term "Rom-Zom-Com" has been bandied about... Romantic Zombie Comedy... usually it means one of the two main love interests is a zombie - although "Shawn" changed that formula somewhat (and was easily one of the best). Anyhoo... all this is a lead up to this post from the lovely Chantal and Angie at CinemaObssesed.com - one of my favourite movie sites and from Ottawa too! While they cover everything, the ladies obviously are horror fans as well, and turn this bit of news of yet ANOTHER lame Hollywood Rom-Com into something a little more interesting.... scroll down to the end if you're the impatient type...

Going the Distance: " Yet another rom-com coming our way! Going the Distance (2010) stars Drew Barrymore (yeah!), Justin Long (huzzah!), Christina Applegate (great!) and Ron Livinston (ok... you rocked in Office Space!) in a tale of love and long distance relationships. The movie takes place between New York City and San Francisco and is sure to be a cutsey-wutsey-lovey-dovey-mush-fest... But hey - we're in! Of course we are. Duh.

But seriously... Are we entering a new state of love and laughs in Hollywood? Why are we seeing soooo many romantic comedies following the oh-so-predictible formula? Guy meets girl, fall in love, oh no - a conflict of some sort, but wait - we really DO love each other. Happy happy joy joy. BORING!

We feel it's time for a zombie romantic comedy. It's time to spice it up a bit. Here are some classics that we think could be remade with a zombie twist:

When Harry ate Sally's brains

Undead in Seattle

Bridget Jones's Diary of the Dead

Never Been Kissed by a Dead Man

The Zombie Wears Prada

He's Just Not That Into Your Brain

Romancing the Corpse

My Big Fat Greek Flesh Eater

Thoughts? Anyone?

Get ready for hugs and kissies and zombie-free love on October 8, 2010. (Yaaaawwwwn)...
This is too cool to pass up. Matt "Creepy Puppet" Ficner is hosting a "Build Your Own Zombie" workshop on Feb. 13th. Space is limited, but if you like his shorts, puppets, or zombies here's a chance to learn from Matt himself. Matt, in case you didn't know, studied under Canada's Noreen Young (remember Read Along, and Under the Umbrella Tree?) as well as working at Henson workshops, so he knows what he's doing. A time for peace on earth, joy, happiness, and slasher films! In the spirit of season, here's a few Christmas goodies for your stocking!

First up, the trailer for the classic, CANADIAN horror film "Black Christmas" - the original 1974 version, not the questionable remake:

Next up, a little bit of "Santa's Slay" - an "interesting" take on the Santa legend...

Finally, let's close out with a little "Silent Night, Deadly Night"

Sleep well little children... and remember.... he's watching you!

KILLER63 IV LINE-UP REVEALED!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQENh1xWgF0/SygjHI8bIkI/AAAAAAAAAic/Zckg9e4-o04/s320/Killer63_Poster_2009_11x17.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415617157479998018" />

16 Projects from 11 filmmakers!
