Last term OSWM took some time off. That time was used to reflect on where the club is, where it came from, and where it is going. With that I would like to introduce you to a Fresh Start. This fresh start is for the club to get back to what made fun and exciting to be a web developer, before money and politics got in the way, before red tape and personal issues clogged the creative process. ThisFresh Start is to take you back to doing web simple because you love to do it and you want to do it well and master your craft. To know yo are the best and prove it. To yourself and your peers. We are OSWM and we are the best at what we do!

Hey everyone,
I have finally taken over the OSWM Pres. blog. I am looking forward to posting all kinds of resources and tutorials to benefit the members of this club. But first, I want to thank Daniel one last time and congratulate him for being the foundation of a strong community of web developers. If it weren’t for people like Daniel and Richard OSWM would not be where we are today. So if you see them in the hall or at a meeting just thank them again for the wonderful job they did building this club from the bottom up. We love you guys!

Show your love for the brotha’s and comment on this post!

Well, its been a while since i’ve posted here and the PHP & Database project has gone CRAZY! I completed the first form that posts the info to the DB and sends an email out to a few folks letting them know someone’s been added.

I have recently been working with Javascript and AJAX along with PHP to create a new DB project. It starts with a login system that checks for a username that was encrypted on creation (via secure webform I also created) then goes to a function panel. This panel includes a Google-like auto suggest feature, drop-down lists populated by names and info from different tables in the DB and even prints out a report with names, and files that link together to display pdf files.

A new project began last night, borne out of the need for a customer to be able to update his Events page on a site I helped John Shacklette build. This too includes a login panel and a page that allows the user to post new events via web form. Simply put, its a content management system (CMS). This too I built from scratch. I hope to add an update and delete panel soon and then i’ll post the link for you to see it.

I also plan to post full tutorials for the login system and the CMS soon.

Well, well…the internet jus keeps gettin better. So lately I’ve been a lil upset trying to find the best browser out there. I don’t hold much loyalty to one or the other…I just want what works. I love the FoxMarks bookmark synchronizer in Firefox, I love the tab integration with Win 7 that IE8 offers, and I love the Suggested Sites Speed dial in Chrome…actually…I REALLY like the Speed dial thing, because Google is really able to find the site I visit most and there all right there when you open a new tab as opposed to the Speed Dial plug-in for Firefox that you have to manually assign.

Well, Google Toolbar now brings the Google Suggested Sites Tab to FF and IE! Hit the link to see a screenshot of the tab page in all its bodacity running in Firefox: Click Here

No word on the Aero Peek support for Windows & yet, but this is great for now.

The Featured portfolio section of the OSWM site is to take somewhat of a duplicitous nature (like that word? Me too). It would, at first, seem great to have YOUR portfolio being promoted on the main page of OSWM. There is, however, a catch. The featured portfolio of the term is to be critiqued by the entire club. Now, don’t be too alarmed. The criticism must be fair and in good spirit or the renderer risks public tarring, feathering and flogging. The idea is to give us a chance to see what other designer/developers think of our work before we really begin to unleash it to the world. Now we return to the point where we’re thinking, “Hmm, this IS a good thing.”

So as new portfolios as completed and submitted, they will be selected to be featured on the site…starting with mine. Let the games begin! We will begin critiquing next club meeting. Which will actually not be until Wednesday, May 13th.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Wise words from the Bible :) For us at OSWM, or any organization, we face the same challenge. The current leadership of OSWM is a group of people who are excited about development and technology, ready to put in long and hard work, and personally vested in the success of our members and future members. We have goals of building a solid network of talented people, growing the club into the largest and most recognized of all the clubs at ECPI, and even spreading to the other 14 campuses. We would like to pay for certifications, software, computers, scholarships and so on. We would like to offer workshops for not only our members, but prospective high school students in the community. All of these things can be accomplished, but they take time.

This is why involvement is key. As the leadership of today passes on into the workplace, new leadership with the same hunger and vision must take their place in order for these goals to become a reality. They must take on the extra hours, sacrifice the extra time. This of course is not only to the benefit of the club, but also to the one stepping up to the challenge. The leadershp and collaborative skills acquired will be used in the workplace and will prove to be invaluable, not to mention the sparkle that this type of involvement adds to a resume.

We need Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Reporters, Webmasters, and so on. We need the new members to become leaders and the leaders to become alumni. We need people willing to help and be helped. What’s your function? What skill or talent do you have that you can lend to the group? You have something. Maybe you just need the opportunity to use it. They say in life everyone has a circle of responsibility. Some draw a circle that only encompasses themselves. Others draw a circle around family or friends. Still others draw an even bigger circle, affecting the lives of many people. How big is your circle? Discuss.
