The latest web site traffic statistics for the Original Prop Blog, as of December 31, 2011 (Q4 2011).

The following is a guide of the various aspects being tracked each month:

• Requests/Hits: Every element on every page (i.e. each photo or graphic) is counted as a server “request” or “hit” (so visiting the main portal may result in 20-30 “hits”); however, a caching plug-in was implemented in May 2009, which may result in an under-reporting of actual traffic.
• Page Views: Every visit to a unique page – the main page, a static page, or any article – should return a “Page View” result of one per page (though, as noted, this may now be under reported due to caching and different tracking software)
• Visits: “Visits” are the number of times one user browses the site, and visits one or more pages.
• Unique Visitors: “Unique Visitors” are the number of uniquely identifiable users that visited the site. May 2009 was the first month of reporting this feature, it will only be reflective of that date, not historically.

Now that I am back in the States, I thought I would take the time to review the results of the overwhelming number entertainment memorabilia auctions that took place throughout the month of December.  Interestingly, while I personally met with a number of participants in our field while traveling in England and France this month, the one unsolicited and seemingly universal topic brought up by all was the question of “the Bubble”.  Is there a bubble?  If so, what are the contributing factors, and when and how will it burst?  And what would the consequences be on our art market?  Since the results of these high profile auctions speak to these notions and related speculation, I thought it would make sense to frame my results analysis in this discussion.

It would seem the the origins of widespread talk about “the bubble” come from the first Debbie Reynolds auction held by Profiles in History back in June (see “Impressions, Questions: Profiles in History’s Debbie Reynolds Sale Event Raises the Bar on Values Realized at Auction”).

Of course, the biggest news out of that auction was the sale of the Marilyn Monroe dress from The Seven Year Itch for over $5.6 million (with fees), though there was some post-sale analysis and questions that were of interest as well (see “The Marilyn Monroe Collection Blog Asks: “Was It THE Dress?” (Profiles in History’s Debbie Reynolds Auction)”, “The Marilyn Monroe Collection Blog: New Evidence “The Seven Year Itch” Profiles in History Subway Dress Altered for “Bachelor Flat”?”).

In any event, there is no denying that new benchmarks for prices were realized in this historic auction, which led to open questions about whether it was a unique sale with special circumstances, or a sign of further growth in the field.

Given the number of auctions with quality material offered at public sale this month, it would seem an appropriate time to look at those results and consider the state of the market.

• Comment: It is interesting to compare classics – like Elvis and The Beatles – with more contemporary acts (i.e. Lady Gaga), though Michael Jackson material seems to do the best with Julien’s Auctions.

 Notable Results – Hollywood & Marilyn Monroe:

Lot 44: Sean Connery James Bond Never Say Never Again Walther Pistol – $10,880

• Comment: The unspectacular price realized is likely a result of the weak provenance offered with the piece, which was sold previously many years ago by Profiles in History – with appropriate authentication, the piece would sell in the six figures.

Lot 48: Conan the Barbarian Stunt Sword – $10,240

• Comment: It would appear that the recent Schwarzenegger-related scandals have not diminished interest/value in key pieces from his films.

Lot 58: Back to the Future No Tech Hoverboard – $5,440

• Comment: This is an interesting benchmark to compare against prices realized by Profiles in History in their end of month auction, which included a large number of lots from this franchise

Lot 75: The Big Lebowski Jeff Bridges Costume with Hoodie – $10,000

Lot 77: The Big Lebowski John Turturro Jesus Outfit – $28,750

Lot 85: The Big Lebowski Bowling Alley Ball Return – $16,875

Lot 91: The Big Lebowski Jeff Bridges White Sleeveless Coveralls – $11,250

Lot 92: The Big Lebowski Jeff Bridges Robe and Shorts – $21,250

• Comment: The Dude abides – and Lebowski items command huge prices, reflective of the fact that the Cohen brothers movie is cemented as a cult classic; interestingly, the Jeff Bridges coveralls were claimed “stolen” back in 2007 (see “eBay Auction: Missing Big Lebowski Costume”).

Lot 518: Elizabeth Taylor 1973 Golden Globe Award – $43,520

• Comment: Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards continue to realize very high prices in the marketplace.

Lot 524: Steve McQueen Le Mans Gulf Oil Jacket – $44,800

• Comment: This is of interest in that Profiles in History sold Steve McQueen Le Mans wardrobe this month as well, which is listed as a notable result in their end of month sale further below.

Lot 649: Marilyn Monroe Joseph Jasgur Negative & Copyright – $21,875

• Comment: These photos and associated copyrights were highly publicized, and this lot represents the highest price realized among the grouping.

Lot 765: Marilyn Monroe / Norma Jeane Handwritten Letter – $37,500

• Comment: Interesting to compare and contrast with some of the other Monroe letters sold by competing auction houses in other notable results within this feature.

• Comment: Again, an interesting point of comparison with other Monroe costumes sold by competing auction houses.

Overall, Julien’s Auctions, while holding events that cross many of the popular culture arts (historic, film, television, sports, music), they seem to do best with more classic material over contemporary, and do very well with Michael Jackson pieces, though strength with certain properties (such as The Big Lebowski) shows that they can realize “Profiles-like” prices on more current material as well.

Interestingly, the second Debbie Reynolds auction was also in Beverly Hills on one of the same days that the Julien’s Auctions event was running.

The first Debbie Reynolds auction earlier in the year astonished many in the field with the incredible prices realized on the majority of the items sold.  With the follow-up, the general feedback that I have been receiving is that the magic did not appear to repeat.  However, estimates set on most items were modest, so most everything sold through.

• Comment: The big winners in this sale were Marilyn Monroe wardrobe pieces and movie cameras used on classic films.  Generally, the balance of the items sold in the hundreds and single digit thousands of dollars.  Though I am not as well versed in the classic Hollywood material, it would seem that the superior material was part of the first sale, so one would not therefore expect a repeat with this sale.

The results of the Premiere Props auction cannot be evaluated, as they do not make the results public (any item listed on the iCollector site states “Winning Bid Undisclosed”).  In addition to an aversion for transparency, some of the material that was offered from non studio/direct sources exhibited provenance that, in my personal opinion, left a lot to be desired.

• Comment: On a personal note, this is one of those auction results that I find difficult to process and comprehend – $13,000 for an autographed poster?  It reminds me of an autographed screenplay in the LOST auction by Profiles in History selling for about $15,000.

Hollywood Auction 46

This was the second major Profiles in History sale in the same month.  Again, results can be perused via the iCollector website: Icons of Hollywood Session 1  |  Icons of Hollywood Session 2

Probably of equal interest of what sold and for how much is which lots were passed with no bids, and the start price/estimates on those lots.  I believe this speaks directly to the “bubble” discussion topic.  Though in having just reviewed the full results, there were far fewer passed lots than I expected based on my feedback from other hobbyists who paid attention to the auction at the time.  I believe that because some of the passed lots were higher profile items, the lack of sale made a bigger impression of the success of the event overall.

Having said that, when I personally perused the hardcopy catalog, I was struck at the high starting bids/estimates on many items (which are typically dictated by the consignor), and the fact that the bulk of items have sold through, it is actually quite a feat.

As a preface, there are so many incredible results in this sale, it is a challenge to pare it down to highlights, so consider the number of items and that this is a purely subjective editorial of what is of particular interest to me on a personal level.

Lot 555: Robin Williams “Mork from Ork” Signature Space Suit Costume – $49,200

• Comment:  I was a big fan of the show at the time of the original broadcast as a kid, so it was nice to see that this survived, but more, it is a remarkable sale result, all things considered – this costume would not have sold for this much 5 years ago.

Lot 570: Monica’s Frame Around Door from Friends – $52,275

• Comment: Though an iconic piece from a classic modern day sitcom, over $50,000 is a staggering amount for what it is…

Lot 589: Bela Lugosi Signature Dracula Screen-Worn Cape – Unsold (Start $1,200,000 | Est $1,200,000-$2,000,000)

• Comment:  I have not researched the provenance on this piece, but assuming it is authentic, it would obviously be an important piece, but I don’t personally view it as breaking the million dollar barrier (or anywhere close to it), and it would appear that the marketplace agrees.

Lot 617: Kenneth Strickfaden “Nebularium” Lab Device from Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein – $49,200

• Comment: On a personal level, the handful of lots associated with Bride of Frankenstein, for me, was the most exciting material in the auction.

Lot 637: Judy Garland “Dorothy” Test Dress – Unsold (Start $60,000 | Est $60,000-$80,000)

• Comment: This was one of the lots referenced by some as an indication of… something… regarding this auction.  Interestingly, this did not sell, yet one of the spears sold for about half as much, and I feel like I’ve seen those spears appear at auction again and again.  I don’t personally collect Wizard of Oz, but if I did, this would be of far more interest to me than one of many spears used by background characters, so I’m a bit surprised that this one did not sell.  I’m also a bit confused about the results from the first Debbie Reynolds auction and these pieces, in that “test” ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz fetched $627,3000 and Dorthy’s “test dress” sold for $1,119,300… yet another “test” dress here went unsold with a $60,000 opening bid?  If someone can explain this to me, please contact me or publish a “Reader Comment” below…

Lot 638: Judy Garland “Dorothy” Screen-Used Dress – $282,900

• Comment: Again, if a “test dress” sold over the Summer for over $1M, why did a “screen-used” dress only realize a quarter of that here?

Lot 639: Judy Garland “Dorothy” Screen-Worn Ruby Slippers – Unsold (Start $2,000,000 | Est $2,000,000-$3,000,000)

• Comment: If “test” ruby slippers sold in Debbie Reynolds I for $627,300, why no buyer at $2,000,000 for what have been touted as the hero, screen-worn slippers?  Some argue that these are the most iconic props in existence, so $2M does not seem as though it would be an unreasonable value – why no sale?

Lot 644: Bert Lahr Screen-Worn “Cowardly Lion” Costume – Unsold (Start $2,000,000 | Est $2,000,000-$3,000,000)

• Comment: Again, this is an interesting lot for comparison purposes with other auction houses and their respective, comparable material.

• Comment: A staggering amount for original poster artwork.

Lot 794: John Chambers Three Personal Make-Up Cases – $79,950

• Comment: This is also a huge and somewhat surprising amount, and I believe reflects that there is some depth within the hobby of significant buyers that are interested in material that is not as obvious as Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, Wizard of Oz, etc., and are willing to pay large funds for material that truly excites them.

Lot 805: Michael J Fox “Marty McFly” Jacket from Back To The Future – $36,900

Lot 859: Mattel Hoverboard from Back To The Future II – $27,675

Lot 860: Hero Remote Control Pitbull Hoverboard from Back To The Future II – $18,450

• Comment: There was a lot of interest in this piece, which has been well featured in the mainstream media and at places like San Diego Comic Con.  Vehicles are always a bit more challenging to find buyers for, but this is probably on the lower side of what many expected.  Having said that, it realized over half a million dollars, so it is still very impressive. (see OPB exclusive Photos and Videos)

Lot 899: Steve McQueen Gulf Griving Suit from Le Mans – $984,000

• Comment:  This is another staggering amount for one wardrobe set, and shows that, if there is a bubble, it certainly has not burst yet.  A friend believes the suit was offered for sale on this website earlier this year for a fraction of the price realized in this sale by Profiles.

Lot 934: Christopher Reeve Superman Costume from Superman III – $36,900

• Comment: This appeared to be a genuine set, and the price realized is actually on the lower side; I speculate that the problems with the costumes in the marketplace at large have damaged the value of the authentic pieces that are in the marketplace, as many simply don’t want to risk capital at all at this point.

Lot 982: Red October Submarine from Hunt for Red October – $116,850

• Comment: Truly an incredible price realized for a model from a non-classic (but very good none the less) film.

Lot 988: Michael Keaton Batsuit from Batman Returns – $49,200

• Comment: As with the Wizard of Oz spears, this is one of those pieces that seem to be present in just about every auction… yet still realizes an impressive price (given that there seem to be dozens of these, or the same ones are auctioned over and over).

Lot 1082: Star Trek TOS Type-1 Hand Phaser – $79,950

• Comment: I know TOS Trek pieces are exceedingly rare (and highly replicated), but given the result, I am left to assume that this one was genuine – I have not had the time to look into this one any further.

Lot 1099: Darth Vader Promotional Costume – $147,600

• Comment: A little over a year ago, Christie’s in South Kensington offered the other of this set of two Darth Vader costumes at auction, though that was was marketed as original and the catalog cover marketing did not help it to garner a bid (with a $250,000 reserve).  As covered in past OPB articles (see “Christie’s Entertainment Memorabilia Auction November 25th In London, Catalog Available Online”, “Prop Talk Podcast #010 – Ed Zine, Darth Vader Costume Collector”, “Christie’s “Pop Culture” Auction Held Today: James Bond Pistol Exceeds Expectations, Darth Vader Costume Goes Unsold”), the Christie’s pieces was embroiled in controversy, which Profiles seems to have successfully sidestepped by marketing the second set as promotional.

Lot 1104: Screen Used Piece of Death Star Surface – $18,450

• Comment: On a personal note, this one falls into the Harry Potter poster category for me… there are seemingly endless pieces of Death Star floating around in the marketplace, so what makes this one worth upwards of $20,000 is a complete mystery to me.

Lot 1130: Jack Skellington Filming Miniature House from Nightmare Before Christmas – $49,200

• Comment: Again, Profiles realizes extraordinary prices on dozens of small miniatures from Nightmare Before Christmas…

Overall, from my perspective, this was another truly remarkable sale for Profiles in History.  The tremendous size and scale of the catalog, the number of truly high end items, and the prices generally realized across the board.  And this speaks directly to the “bubble talk”.  Is this sustainable?  Is the marketplace large enough to continue to absorb this much material, at this rate, with this level of pricing?

“The Bubble”

Having gone through the results of thousands of lots across many auction houses for events that took place over just a few weeks… my initial impression is simply that it is a collective (and maybe literally) a ton of material, sold for many millions of dollars.  The biggest question I have is: who is buying this material?

There is a distinct “online hobbyist” component to this field, but this component is only responsible for a small percentage of what is sold into the marketplace.

I find that there is a lot of mystery surrounding who is buying the rest of these assets.  As such, it is that much more challenging to speculate about “the bubble”, and make predictions about the future of the hobby, in that there is not really enough information even available to guess at what the hobby is today, let alone where it is going.

As such, I can only really subjectively offer my views of values, and whether I feel that they are 1) inflated and 2) sustainable.

Are values inflated?

I think one inherent problem with the auction house system is that in some ways, it does not offer a true market value on items.  It is somewhat manipulated by starting bids/reserves and estimates.  I believe that many people that consign to auction houses are doing so with hopes of hitting the lottery, in many ways, and try to achieve this by setting high reserves and estimates.  This is then compounded by hype, which manifests in a variety of ways.  So there is a concerted effort to convince the marketplace of value, leading up to an auction (particularly on the high end, high profile pieces).

Interestingly, in this case, this month, this did not seem to work with the ruby slippers offered by Profiles in History.  The set is arguably among (if not the) most important pop culture artifacts of our time, yet no one in the marketplace felt compelled to spend $2,000,000 for these pieces.  More has been spent on lesser pieces.

So are we on the cusp of seeing some push back on the rocketing trajectory of values on the best of the best that these auction houses are offering?

Though, as noted, there were few high profiles passes at the latest Profiles auction, there were still some passes on some really important and desirable material, and the results at the first Debbie Reynolds auction over the Summer still eclipse the results of the two Profiles sales this month.

However, this could merely be a rolling plateau of values, not the bursting of a bubble, and perhaps things will more or less stay within these ranges for some time.

Another thing to consider is that we are in the midst of a global financial and economic crisis, and even still, we are seeing staggering prices on what amounts to most people at large as “memorabilia” and discretionary spending.

Eventually, the economy will improve and grow, and one would assume, at some future date when times are better, this will contribute to additional growth in this field.

So are these values sustainable?

That is probably a more difficult question to answer as, again, I really don’t have a grasp over who is buying this material, and why they are buying it.

Preservation efforts? A hobby?  Investment?

So I don’t really have an answer.  But as noted in my opening, in having met with a number of savvy members of our field, “the bubble” seems to be on the mind of many, and I get the sense that many of them feel that we are in the midst of a bubble of some sort.

The true test of whether a bubble has occurred will be when we see a solid, consistent trend of 1) “like” pieces substantially underperforming compared to the results of directly comparable pieces that sold in the past, and/or 2) of pieces coming back to market and selling for substantially less than what was realized in the prior sale.

I would be interested in feedback from others on the state of the market, and perhaps I will revisit the topic with my eventual year in review article.

This is the seventh and last in a series of photojournals covering concerts during my trip to England and France. Tonight I attended a Rihanna concert at the O2 Arena in London, England on December 20th, 2011.

Rihanna is definitely more (really pure) pop and the most contemporary and mainstream of the shows I’ve been to in England and France in the past two weeks, and thus doesn’t require much explanation nor introduction.  She has been a very prolific and successful recording artist and is probably one of the biggest worldwide acts at the moment.  She also just released her sixth album in seven years, ‘Talk That Talk’.

Calvin Harris, the collaborator on ‘We Found Love’, her leading single on the new album, opened the show with his electronic style music, which was really spectacular, and literally had the venue bouncing (and he ended his set with the single, as did Rihanna close out her own show with the same).

The concert by Rihanna – truly a “show” in every sense of the word, was actually quite spectacular in its size, scale, scope, and sheer energy.  I clocked the set list at about 22 songs at upwards of 2 hours, which left me wondering how Rihanna has the energy and ability to put on such a performance – it was really amazing.  In addition to Rihanna and her band were, as one would expect, many dancers but also a lot of moving set pieces and what not on stage as well.  It is really quite a production.

The last three shows (12/20. 12/21, 12/22) held at the O2 Arena in London are actually being filmed for a DVD / Blu Ray Disc of the concert, which will be edited together and released next year (early 2012).

One thing that struck me during the performance itself was that Rihanna really seems to connect directly with fans during the show (in many cases, literally), and I noticed one moment in particular in which she actually seemed a bit overwhelmed with emotion from the massively positive feedback and energy from the enormous crowd, and turned her back and seemed genuinely choked up about it for a few seconds.  It’s actually quite refreshing to see someone with such natural ability as well as real fame still grounded in such a way.

I was fortunate in that I had VIP seating with a post show, back stage meet and greet, so I was able to meet Rihanna as well, which was really a pleasure.  Below is a photo of myself with Rihanna, which was a wonderful way to close out my trip:

This is the sixth in a series of photojournals covering concerts during my trip to England and France. Tonight’s performance was Echo and the Bunnymen, held at the O2 Academy in their hometown of Liverpool, England on December 17th, 2011.

Echo and the Bunnymen were one of the few classic “alternative” 80s-era bands that I’d never seen perform live and in person, so when I was putting together my trip and found that they were playing in Liverpool around the same time, which is the town in which they were formed, I expanded my London-Paris trip to include a quick jaunt over to Liverpool (which I was already familiar with from the Coldplay charity gig I attended their last year, nearly a year to the day).  In fact, I pretty much retraced my steps from last year, taking the same train from London to Liverpool (though today I started my journey much earlier, out of Paris in the morning), waiting for a taxi at the same spot where we ran into Chris Martin (he wasn’t on my train this time), staying at the same hotel, and passing the Royal Court Theater and other places that we met up with other Coldplay fans from around the world.

In any event, I was very excited to finally have an opportunity to see this band, and in particular, see them perform my two favorite songs of theirs (which also happen to be their biggest mainstream hits).

The band was formed in Liverpool in 1978, as part of the “post-punk” movement.  They have definitely found more success in their homeland than in the U.S. and elsewhere, where their works were relegated to the “alternative” or “modern rock” subgenres during the 80s.

I know they came onto my radar with the Anton Corbijn-directed “Lips Like Sugar” music video, in which visually they appeared in some ways similar to both Depeche Mode (in dress) and The Cure (in stature and… hair).

Another classic song of theirs, “The Killing Moon”, has been helped along by featuring in the score of cult classic Donnie Darko (and, to a much lesser extent, Gross Pointe Blanke).

Most recently, they have done some touring which features the playing of their first two albums (Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here) in their entirety, though tonight’s set list included a variety of material (note: tonight’s show sold out, and they actually added a second night, which occurred last night).

My experience in finding a spot in this totally open, general admission/standing event was akin to that of the New Order show – somehow finding early access and walking right to the front (though in this case I was front row, far right, not centered).  The crowd was very enthusiastic, and very dedicated to the band.  I spoke at length with one woman who has been following the band since the very beginnings.

This marks the fourth Coldplay performance I’ve seen this year (having seen them in Madrid, Spain in October and in Los Angeles California in July, as well as in London a few days ago).  As such, I will keep the write up to a minimum.  This is my first visit to France, but having arrived just yesterday afternoon, have not had too much opportunity to explore the city as of yet.

Tonight’s show was very similar to the one in London on Friday, with some tweaks to the set list (some shuffling around, and playing ‘Shiver” in place of “What If” and “Don’t Panic”).

While I was on the floor, close to the stage in London, I opted for seating at this show for the different perspective.  As such, photos aren’t as close up, obviously, but gives larger sense of the arena than was the case with the London gig.

Unfortunately, the WiFi at my Paris hotel is surprisingly worse than what I had at the London hotel (with a 200 MB daily cap as well), so I will be updating the article with videos in the future (quite a few of them).

This is the fourth in a series of photojournals covering concerts during my trip to England and France. Tonight I attended a Duran Duran concert at the O2 Arena in London, England on December 12th, 2011.

Duran Duran were one of the biggest acts in the early days of MTV.  Going up at that time, from my perspective, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince were the huge solo acts, Billy Idol was the king of the alternative scene, and Duran Duran was the biggest alternative band.  Duran Duran really had perfect timing and a lot of other elements that made them immediate stars at that time.  They had a very keen sense of style, understood the power of the music video and was very innovative in taking advantage of the medium to help spread awareness of their work, they also knew how to manipulate the media with overt sexual imagery, and their music was very catchy upon a first listen.  They created a sound and brand all their own, and embraced the lifestyle of being in a global band.  Singer Simon Le Bon seemed as though he was born to front a rock band.  If ever there was a band destined to create a James Bond film opening track, it was Duran Duran (see ‘View To A Kill’).

While there have certainly been a number of line-up changes over the years in the guitarist department, and given that most 80s bands haven’t endured past that era, it is remarkable that Duran Duran has consistently put out some great tracks over the years, keeping them relevant and turning new fans onto their classic material.  Today they feature Le Bon, Roger Taylor on drums, John Taylor on bass, and Nick Rhodes on keyboards.

Regarding relevance, Duran Duran were just in the news here in London today, in their Daily Mail, in a news story that is fairly consistent with those back in the 80s… one of their racy videos not getting play on the cable music channels due t0 controversy over images of cavorting supermodels:  “Girls On Film: Duran Duran are transformed into the world’s leading supermodels in the 80s icons’ controversial new video“

Their tried and true marketing strategy probably works even better today than it did in the 80s, as now when such stories run, all one has to do it turn to the Internet to view the controversial content (if it isn’t embedded in the online version of the new story as it is – which it is in this case).

Below is their latest video (though more of a short), which was also played in the background onstage during the performance of the song in the concert tonight:

Getting to tonight’s show, it was fantastic.  While the Coldplay concert at the same venue Friday night had an open floor, this was reconfigured for Duran Duran with no standing/general admission seating – it was all sectioned and numbered seats (I was on the floor in the 12th row).  Funny enough, there were still some random “MX” butterflies around here and there from the Coldplay show and the “Under One Roof” charity gig at the O2 the following night.

Duran Duran had a fairly lengthy set, featuring many of their biggest hits with a smaller mix of some newer material off of “All You Need Is Now”.  The fact that some big hits weren’t played is a testament to the depth of their overall catalog.

A true showman, Le Bon was quite interactive with the audience, literally jumping into it a few times for some one on one participation, which including having an attendee start off ‘Reflex’ and toward the end, having another introduce him (he didn’t want to introduce himself).  There was also a Twitter intermission, in which any tweet classed #duranlive appeared on the giant screen behind the stage (and some were quite funny).

One of the highlights for me was during the performance of ‘Wild Boys’, in which they mixed in a bit of the classic 80s hit ‘Relax’ by Frankie Goes To Hollywood:

I hadn’t seen the band perform live since the early 90s, so it was awesome to see them again now, and also to see them play in London.

As noted in the previous reports, the hotel wifi is very slow, so more videos will be added to this article at a future date.  I am changing hotels to Paris tomorrow, so maybe I will have better luck there.

This is the third in a series of photojournals covering concerts during my trip to England and France. Tonight’s performance was Front 242, which was held at the Koko in London, England on December 11th, 2011.  This was their special 30th Anniversary Show.

Front 242 are a Belgium band that was a pioneering force in electronic music and especially the subgenre called “Industrial” music.  Much of the early music in this genre was based around samples of heavy percussion sounds.  I personally didn’t start following them until 1988, with the release of their ‘Front by Front’ album, which had the song ‘Headhunter’ and related music video by Anton Corbijn, which received play on MTV’s ’120 Minutes’, which was a favorite program of mine back in the mid 80s to early 90s.  Below is the video, which remains one of my favorites (even among Anton Corbin’s own works):

The song itself also remains my favorite of the band’s songs, as it is a bit more traditional in structure than much of their other work.

I feel that the genre of industrial music is kind of like abstract art, in terms of how to receive it, interpret it, etc., and I tend to prefer music that, while maybe a bit edgy or experimental, is also catchy and hooky, and much of industrial music at large is stripped down a bit too much from what makes “pop” at large work (and popular), but that is also the point of it. Some songs seem to be all chorus, while others perhaps lack a chorus entirely, and industrial songs are generally not “sung”, but shouted.

Other industrial bands, including some of the bands that supported tonight’s show at the Koko, include forms of protest messages (in the songs and, in the performances in words and images on giant screens that are even more overt), much like punk and other genres.  Interestingly, the imagery and tone of the music is often clothed in that which it seems to be protesting against…  as an example, opening band Nachtmahr, with images of war and destruction, and words like “WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER” emblazoned against a giant screen, while the band is dressed in military attire and the lead singer screams lyrics.  Again, it is all a bit like modern art, and open to interpretation and analysis.

In any event, enough with the primer and personal observations about the genre at large…  the concert itself tonight was quite an experience.

As most of my UK friends are not familiar with or were uninterested/unavailable to attend, I went to this one solo.

I was at first struck by the amazing exterior of the venue, which is absolutely incredible (even in London, which is beauty at large in terms of architecture).  Inside was surprisingly just as stunning.  It also drew a crowd of varying but alternative fashion, which is always a fun experience.  I think the niche nature of industrial music brings together a “like” crowd and that always generates some great energy for a gig.

I arrived a bit late, but caught the last half of opener Global Citizen, and other supporting groups included Empirion and the aforementioned Nachtmahr.  All were very different and gave highly enjoyable performances.

I had an opportunity to chat with a number of people before and in-between the opening acts, and it seemed like almost everyone I spoke with was in some way connected with one of the bands.

While I spent time on each of the three levels, I ended up settling in behind the engineering booth at the center level across from the stage.  I was impressed at how much effort and actual technology was involved in putting on this show – it was simply amazing.  All of those involved were very cool people to chat with as well.  I spent a good amount of time talking with Evil E, who is involved in the engineering and other responsibilities, and was surprised he took so much time leading up to the event to talk with me.  He was excited to have someone in attendance all the way from California.  They also allowed me to shoot a lot of photos and video of the engineering area and various components, as well as at work during the show (see video below).  I also thought it would be interesting to shoot some of the concert framed by the technology upon which it was built.  Interestingly, a great deal of music comes from that area behind much of the audience, including some keyboard playing and other effects.

The show itself was really quite an experience, as I never imagined, at this juncture, to ever see Front 242 perform live.  While I’ve seen other contemporaries in the genre, like Nitzer Ebb, in the past, that was many, many years ago.  It was fortuitous that this gig popped up and fit into my schedule while here in the UK.

Interestingly, while the planning of the show was very technical in nature, the set list was being changed all the way up to minutes before the start of the show.  Following the show, one of the technicians gave me one of their two set lists, and then Evil E gave me the other one (photos below) – funny enough they don’t match, and the most correct one had a last minute change as well to meet the venue curfew (Kampfbereit omitted).  Thanks again to those with the band for the hospitality (I was the last one out of the theater).

I feel very fortunate to have been able to attend their special 30th anniversary show, and love how the crew are so involved with their fans.  It was a great show, and I hope the readers enjoy the photos below.

This is the second in a series of photojournals covering concerts during my trip to England and France. Tonight’s performance was New Order, which was held at the Troxy in East London, England on December 10th, 2011.

I have been a huge New Order fan going back to the early 80s.  For those unfamiliar with the band, they were formed by the surviving members of Joy Division after the 1980 suicide of their lead singer, Ian Curtis.  Bernard Sumner took over vocals, Stephen Morris and Peter (“Hooky”) Hook continued with bass an other instruments, and Gillian Gilbert joined the reformed band, which had a strong electronic pop change in direction from Joy Division’s post punk sound.

Being a British band and breaking up a few times over the years, many have never had an opportunity to see them perform live, and the last break-up, with a division between Peter Hook and the other members of the band, left most fans suspecting that they may never see the band play together again.  The last time I saw them in concert was a Shoreline Amphitheater in 1993, and they have not even played in their homeland of England for five years until tonight.

The recent reunion all began with two concerts (one in Paris, one in Brussels) to benefit their friend and filmmaker Michael Shamberg, and tonight’s show was a “one off” performance.  The reunion was not without controversy, with founding member Peter Hook, no longer involved in the band, being publicly vocal about his disagreement with the new line-up.

Original members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, and Gillian Gilbert have been joined by Tom Chapman on bass guitar and Phil Cunningham as an additional guitarist.  All of them, save Gilbert, are also involved in the Bad Lieutenant, a band formed following the last break up of New Order (also involved are members of Jake Evans, who opened for New Order at the gig tonight).

In any event, giving the above and fortuitous timing, I was able to go to the concert tonight, and it was an incredible experience.

Coming off of the great Coldplay concert last night, friend and fellow hobbyist (and music aficionado) Oz went with me to this show, and we were extremely lucky on several fronts.

The tube/metro serving the Troxy is shut down this weekend, and poor planning on our part left us scrambling to find a way to the venue.  Ultimately, we were able to secure a taxi, and actually arrived late to the venue.  However, because I purchased my tickets from outside of England, they could not be mailed and I was to pick them up at Will Call.  There were many long lines, so I asked security which line we should wait in for Will Call, and he directed us off to an independent queue space… with no one else waiting in it.

Less than a minute later, we were directed into the venue.  We went to Will Call and I presented my passport – the employee knew my name immediately and handed us our tickets.  We were directed into the concert area, where we had general admission/floor/standing tickets.  It was empty.  We literally walked up to the front center position below the stage, and looked at each other, astonished.

As noted, Jake Evens provided a fantastic opening, and at one point, to my surprise, at one point I looked to the right of the stage, behind a curtain (that I could easily see past given my proximity to the stage), only to see Bernard Sumner himself watching the opening act, and then looking over to me and sharing a nice smile.  A surreal moment.

It was a genuine thrill to finally see New Order come out on stage, to the sounds of ‘Elegia’, which then transitioned into ‘Crystal’ (for which the official video, which played as backdrop here, served as the inspiration for the name of the band, The Killers – with the more hip and youthful faux band performing in the video as a bit of commentary on the music business).  Both of these run continuous in the embedded video below.  We were so close, I couldn’t fit the full stage into the frame of my camera for photos or video (even pushing the zoom out wider/further than what we were physically seeing).

New Order has such a fantastic catalog of songs, it was no surprise that much was left out; but what was played was done with great spirit, energy, and fun.  There were some surprises as well – after getting over the notion that I was actually seeing New Order play again, before my eyes, out they came with the song 5-8-6 – a non-hit favorite of mine, that I would never have imagined that I would ever see live.

The band closed out with Joy Division’s biggest hit, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, which was released right before Ian Curtis’ death.  It is also one of two songs I will see performed live during my European trip that was featured in the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

A few good bits of memorabilia were tossed into the audience – Bernard Sumner tossed out his guitar pick, which bounced off my hand and was rescued by the gentleman standing next to me, who was thrilled.  Drumsticks, set lists, more guitar picks…  I was lucky enough to secure two pieces.  The first I asked a roadie to get for me, which I assumed was Bernard’s set list, as it was taped to the monitor at his feet, but ended up being the typed out lyrics to the aforementioned encore closing song, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ (it was originally written and sung by Ian Curtis for Joy Division, which would explain the assist).  After most had cleared out, I also spotted one last played and discarded guitar pick on the stage, which a roadie was kind enough to retrieve for me (this one used by Phil Cunningham.  Photos of all below.

This is the first in a series of photojournals covering concerts during my trip to England and France.  Tonight’s performance was Coldplay, which took place at the O2 Arena in London, England on December 9th, 2011.

Having already seen the band play twice this year (Madrid, Spain in October and Los Angeles California in July), tonight’s gig was another unique performance by the band, with an evolving setlist (which included ‘What If?’ and ‘Don’t Panic’), it was also a different experience for me seeing them play a large arena in their homeland (I saw them play Liverpool and Newcastle last year, but those were small, intimate venues).  It was also a great vantage point for this show, being in the general admission standing area very close to the stage.

As introduced in Madrid, this show featured the new light-up bracelets for attendees, though the design has improved and now they lit up for three songs (‘Hurts Like Heaven’, ‘Charlie Brown’, and ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’) instead of just one.

It is late here in the UK (almost 4 am) and much on the agenda for tomorrow, so below are some photos from the event – the second of two videos to be uploaded within the next few days (slow WiFi at the hotel):

About a year ago, I published a series of uncharacteristically informal, personal, and in many cases off topic articles to close out 2010 (see London Journal 2010).  If doing it again to close out 2011 makes it a tradition, well, I can hope that is the case, but cannot predict if I’ll be making a similar trip next year.  In any event, I will be traveling to three major cities this year – London, Paris, and Liverpool (having visited both UK destinations last year; this will be the first visit to France).  As with last year, much of the journey will be adventures related to various rock/pop music concerts, but will again be meeting up with many of my friends in the television and movie prop collecting field, and visits to prop-related venues.

Of course, December 2011 will go down as a month with seemingly continuous entertainment memorabilia auctions; my review of those events will likely be in summary form via my annual “year in review” article for 2011.

November 2011

Working backwards, in late November I was able to catch one of the last live performances put on by The Pixies as part of their “Lost Cities” tour.  Playing in Napa, California, the band played through their landmark ‘Doolittle’ album, in order along with B-sides and a few extras.  It was a real pleasure to see them again, not having attended a live performance since seeing them play UC Davis back in 2004 as part of their first reunion tour, and shows in the early 90s and late 80s prior to that.

October 2011

In October, I have an opportunity to see Billy Idol perform at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA for the second consecutive year.  My favorite (relatively) local venue, I was fortunate enough to have front row center seats, literally standing right in front of Idol’s front center position for the entire show (as you will see from the photos below).  Because I was “right there”, I opted not to shoot video at this gig (but did from a few rows back the year before – “Eyes Without A Face”, “Rebel Yell”).  Last year I was lucky and caught one of Billy Idol’s autographed plates, and one of the bassist’s stage-used guitar picks.  This year, Billy Idol came off the stage and handed me an autographed set list, and I also got one of Steve Steven’s well-used guitar picks.  At the end of the show, Billy Idol reached down and handed us his one stage-used guitar pick, so now I have a full set spanning the two shows at the venue.

September 2011

In September, I went to one of Hall & Oates shows, which was incredible, as I’ve come to expect from seeing them many times over the years (including at Mountain Winery last year).  With such a deep catalog of hits, any fan of 80s pop music would not come away disappointed.

August 2011

In August, I caught a special one off Coldplay show benefiting MusicCares at UCLA.  This was another great Coldplay show, and like with the Madrid show, I had the benefit of VIP tickets and some special perks and front row in the seated section.  Two of the songs were recorded for the Jimmy Kimmel show, which aired later the same night (with some funny video with Jimmy Kimmel at the very bottom).
