I am happy to announce Nostalgia Bandit — a new boutique auction house I built from the ground up, structured around the principles this blog has always argued for: research-driven authentication, controlled terminology calibrated to actual evidence, and honest disclosure of gaps where they exist. The first sale is 96 lots of authenticated music memorabilia from artists who shaped Gen X, Millennials, and contemporary culture — Coldplay, the Beastie Boys, the Cure, Muse, Jane’s Addiction, No Doubt, Sonic Youth, the White Stripes, the Goo Goo Dolls, Steve Stevens, the Cars, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joan Jett, the Flaming Lips, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Grimes, the Black Eyed Peas, the B-52’s, Portishead, Ride, Mazzy Star, the Damned, and more — plus an MTV Video Music Award (Moonman). Stage-played instruments, music video-used wardrobe, tour-used gear, and one-of-one artifacts with documented provenance.

I know this audience is primarily Hollywood-focused, and music is not the lane most OPB readers came here for. So I want to be specific about what comes next: future Nostalgia Bandit auctions will draw from the broader universe of pop culture — including original props, costumes, and production-used material from film and television. That work has always been what I came up doing, and it remains a category I have spent the last twenty-four years collecting, authenticating, and writing about. Music is the inaugural focus because it is the category in which the institutional infrastructure is most generationally lopsided and the work most needed. Hollywood will be in scope as future auctions develop.

A few things about Nostalgia Bandit’s approach that anyone who has read OPB will recognize immediately:

Every lot is researched and photo-matched where possible. The catalog reads like a research document, not a marketing piece. Where evidence exists for a stronger attribution, that attribution is made plainly. Where it does not, the language is calibrated downward and the gaps are disclosed. Specific terminology — screen-matched, photo-matched, stage-played, recording-used, attributed to — is applied deliberately, with definitions consistent with the methodology I have argued for here for nearly two decades.

Every winning bidder receives a Nostalgia Bandit Letter of Provenance. This is not a one-page generic COA. It is a multi-page document on archival letterhead, hand-embossed seal, hand-signed in four colors, reproducing the complete catalog description in full — designed to travel with the artifact through every owner who comes after, so the context never separates from the object. We don’t erase history. We add to it.

You deal with me directly, end to end. Not a department, not a rotating specialist. The same person who researched and wrote the catalog entry is the person who answers your questions about the lot, signs your Letter of Provenance, and oversees your shipping. If you have spent any time around me through OPB, Prop Talk, the Movie Prop Discussion Forum, or my work at Julien’s, you already know what that means in practice.

A couple of lots I would flag for OPB readers specifically — pieces that may register more vividly to this audience than to a general music collector:

The Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill-era stage-used turntable case (1986–1987). A working tour case with the kind of documented production-use, period-correct wear patterns, and attributed graffiti tagging that OPB readers think about every time they evaluate a film prop. Screen-matched to Soul Train (1987) and photo-matched to The Joan Rivers Show (1987). Cey Adams and Dave “Shadi” Scilken graffiti tags, both independently authenticated.

The Sonic Youth Fender Musicmaster (1992) — Lee Ranaldo’s stage-played, music video-used, photo-matched and screen-matched guitar from the band’s “100%” video. The video itself is a cultural artifact of the early-90s alternative rock moment. The instrument is the documented physical object from that production.

The Cure Roland JX-3P synthesizer (1983–1987) — Porl Thompson’s stage-played and studio-used keyboard from one of the band’s most consequential creative periods.

The Steve Stevens Rebel Yell pedalboard (1983–1987). Custom-built by Stevens, used to record the album at Electric Lady Studios, photo-matched to Saturday Night Live (1984) and screen-matched to the MTV New Year’s Rock N’ Roll Ball (1983). Signed LOA from Stevens. Idol and Stevens were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2026 in April.

The Cars Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 synthesizer (1979–1984) — Greg Hawkes’ stage-played and studio-used keyboard from the band’s most active and culturally definitive period. The Prophet-5 was one of the most consequential synthesizers in popular music; this is one tied directly to the era and artist that brought it into mainstream rock production.

The Coldplay Chris Martin “Make Trade Fair” shirt (2002–2004) — stage-worn during the A Rush of Blood to the Head tour, hand-customized by Martin (neckline, sleeves, and hem cut for stage movement), and band-signed in black marker by all four members. Inscribed in Martin’s hand: “COLDPLAY gig shirt 2004.” A wardrobe object with documented use, customization, and signed authentication.

This article is by its nature self-promotion for Julien’s Auctions (where I serve as COO), but I believe it is consistent with my past articles sharing news and insights about Star Wars with followers, so I’m making an exception in this case, as I am in a unique position to share new information about Star Wars.  I wanted to put a spotlight not so much on our lots in an upcoming auction, but on Jack Warford and his story behind some of the iconic photography of original model starships from the original Star Wars in 1977.  All of this background was completely unknown to me prior to working on bringing some prints and original photos to auction this year.

I do from time to time get very involved with some of the material that we bring to auction at Julien’s.  I’ve been working with Sue Warford, widow of Jack Warford, for most of this year with a very unique collection.

I had never heard of Jack Warford before she contacted me, but once I saw his work, I was very familiar with some of the images that he created with the original Star Wars.

This was somewhat similar to when I had worked with Colin Cantwell, bringing his never before seen concept artwork for Star Wars to auction back in 2014.

In the case of these beautiful prints that I worked on this year, unfortunately, Jack Warford had passed away in 2018.  But I have had the pleasure of getting to know his widow, Sue, who has been an amazing person to become acquainted with over the past six months.

Sue, now 84, worked with Jack in their photography business.  Both Magnum Photographers, they had photographed many in and out of Hollywood, including Ronald Regan, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and more.

Because she does not have a computer and is not online even via smart phone, we discussed Jack’s work on Star Wars at length over the phone before I ever saw images of his work, but I knew right away what iconic images she must have been describing.

When I finally received the limited number of prints that he made of his work in 1977 (most blown up to 16×20), this was affirmed.  I felt a bit like I was uncovering long lost treasure, as many were familiar, yet different, and I am fairly certain a number of the images have never been published.

Along with the Star Wars prints were other photography examples from his career, as well as some amazing shots of Jack (some by Sue herself).

Most interesting was that Sue kept a letter with an account of his experience working on Star Wars… in his own words.

While not a traditional auction house thing to do, I was determined to share his story within our printed and online catalogues, to in some manner memorialize his account for fans and historians.

Again, this is just his first-hand, personal account of his own experience, which obviously cannot be verified one way or another with the passage of time.  But in my searching the Internet and asking some Star Wars-savvy fans and collectors about Jack Warford, no one knew who I was talking about or his role in working on the film, so I feel it is important to in some way record his history, which otherwise might have been completely lost.

When The Force Was With Me

George Mather was a good friend of mine. He was a general, all-around film person who belonged to Screen Actor’s Guild and the Director’s Guild, was occasionally a non-union cinematographer and usually had his fingers in more pies than Little Jack Horner. When he needed a photographer, he called me, whether it was to shoot a casting portfolio of his current girlfriend, and he had a lot of those, or to do working portraits of all the staff members of an entire studio. On one particular occasion, he called to see if I would be free on a certain Sunday in 1977 to take some pictures of some models.

I had photographed many models for their portfolios, for ads, and I was a staff photographer for the short-lived fashion magazine, California Girl, so I said “Sure.” He told me to call Gary Kurtz, the producer of this picture he was working on for details. I did. It seems that the models in question were not the breathing, posing, photogenic female kind, but models of space ships for a science fiction movie shooting at this rented barn near the Van Nuys Airport that had been dubbed Industrial Light and Magic. The pictures were to be for publicity and promotion. I calculated a price for that and agreed at five hundred for the afternoon.

When I arrived at the studio, accompanied by my wife, Sue, and my next door neighbors, Tom and Peggy Marks, who had been invited to come and watch by George, we were given coffee and the grand tour of the works in progress by John Dykstra, the special photographic effects supervisor. The model makers had been having such a wonderful time building the space ships that they had fallen behind in production and schedule and were over budget. When George was hired as production manager and whip cracker, only one shot had been completed, the shot of the pod with C3PO and R2D2 (named for a roll of magnetic tape, roll 2, dialog 2) blasting down to the planet below from the blockade runner. The part of the movie with the live action had been completed months before and the actors had all gone home. The Millennium Falcon that had served for a set in England for the actors, only showing a quarter of the whole ship, had cost less than a third of the three foot diameter model used by Industrial Light and Magic, henceforth referred to as ILM, for the full-body shots in action. On the day we arrived, they had just finished what turned out to be the opening shot of the movie. The three-foot long model of the Imperial Cruiser was upside down on a plexiglass pedestal with a blue neon light inside chasing a two inch model of the blockade runner. For the reverse shots of the blockade runner, carrying Princess Leah and the two droids, they used the largest model they made, being over six feet long. In some photographic processes, called Blue Screen, blue will disappear, and it is easy to strip in another piece of film. It goes back to the dawn of movies, in The Great Train Robbery when the train comes rolling by the open window in the telegraph office. If you cover an actor’s face and hands in blue, presto, the invisible man. It explains why newscasters can never wear blue shirts.

John showed me the setup of the shot they had just taken. The camera was mounted on a dolly running on railroad tracks beside the models and the wide angle lens was only a couple inches above the model as the computer oozed it by very slowly. Nearby was a monitor. He turned it on. The picture was in black and white negative, inverted so you were looking at it from underneath instead of above. The tiny blockade runner flashed across the screen and then the imperial cruiser came by. It kept coming. It still kept coming until it passed by and the engines were visible I was completely blown away. “You just got my three bucks, (the cost of a movie ticket then)” I said. In most, if not all, of the shots of the ships, it was the camera that moved in a predetermined path, operated by instructions from a computer, not the ships. Backgrounds would be added later along with the blasts from the engines.

ILM had made a deal with a Japanese model maker to send them all the rejects of their model cars or whatever. For example, where the mandibles or jaws of the Millennium Falcon join the main body between the upper and lower plates, you can see the oil pan and transmission of a model Mercedes Benz. The sprues that held the plastic parts together during the casting were put to work as piping.

The model makers at ILM had a wonderful time playing, as evidenced by the missing plate on the Millennium falcon with a skeleton curled up inside that no one would ever see – one of the reasons George Mather was called in as expediter.

It was time to go to work. Gary Kurtz showed me the different models he wanted shot – the Millennium Falcon, several different X-wing fighters, some Y-wing fighters, the set up shot with the tiny blockade runner and the Imperial Cruiser, the full size blockade runner, used in reverse shots of the interception, which was the largest model they had made, being over six feet long, and some surface shots of various scales of the surface of the Death Star to use as backgrounds. Whatever lighting I needed would be provided. Since this was supposed to be outer space where there is no atmosphere to diffuse the light, I used one large floodlight for a single source with no fill, as if the model were lit by a nearby star. I set up my Linhoff 4 X 5 camera, using a six-inch Golden Dagor lens, about as fine a photographic setup as is available. After setting up each shot as if the ships were in action, not merely static models, I called in Gary to take a look at the lighting and setup before I tripped the shutter. One shot I was particularly proud of was of an X-wing fighter, front on with one laser on a wingtip pointed right at the camera. This shot was the one that wound up on lunch buckets, game box covers, and t-shirts as well as publicity shots and posters and may have been the most published photograph of 1977. An animated copy showed up in the Star Wars computer game.

The next day, I took the Ektacolor negatives to Spectra Color Lab in Burbank. My wife and I were going out of town on a shoot, so we arranged to have the negs and the contact proofs picked up. Upon our return, I called George. He said he was appalled I rushed to his office to take a look and some of the shots had blue flashes on them, something I had never seen before.

I found out this was caused by the high degree of static electricity at the studio that made sparks when the dark slides were pulled out of the film holders. I called Gary Kurtz, apologizing and offering to do a reshoot. He said the pictures were just fine and since the images would be stripped out and stuck on starfield or Death Star backgrounds, there would be no problems since most of the flashes were not on the ships bodies and the others could easily be taken out. I asked Gary Kurtz if I could borrow the negatives and make some prints With Gary’s blessing, I made several copies of each of what I considered to be the best shots, mostly in 16 X 20 with a few 8 X 10’s.

It would be awhile before I heard from Lucasfilm again. And then when I did it was an invitation to the cast and crew screening of Star Wars, not THE Star Wars as it was under the shooting title, at the Director’s Guild Theater on Wilshire Boulevard, lunch to follow at Dr. Munchie’s. George and Marcia Lucas had just finished editing the film, and no one else had seen so much as a working print. It was not Episode IV, A New Hope, but just Star Wars. There was no scene between Han Solo and Jabba the Hut; that would be added later.

There was a burst of applause from the cast and crew on the opening shot that I described, another when the modified elephants made up like bantas appeared and when the stars took on a Doppler effect as the Millennium Falcon jumped into faster than light speed. When the lights came on, it was plain that the audience was more than pleased with what they had done, Almost everyone, that is. The feeling was jubilant, Mark Hamil was surrounded by a heard of friends and relatives, but as the theater emptied, Harrison Ford, shoulders hunched, hands in pockets, staring at the floor in front of him, slouched down the aisle very much the loner wearing a cloud of gloom. Wearing our “May the Force Be With You” buttons that had been passed out as we walked in, we proceeded to Dr. Munchie’s where we were adequately wined and dined. After eating, Sue and I were sitting on some steps talking to John Dykstra when Harrison Ford ambled up, still wearing his dark cloud. He had enjoyed maybe one too many glasses of wine. I asked him why he was so depressed. He replied that he hadn’t worked as a actor in nine months since the live action was finished and he didn’t know if he would ever work again. We all tried to cheer him up in vain. He was convinced this was the bottom point in his life and his career. We all know he did work again, quite a few times and the world may have gained a movie star, but it lost a wonderful carpenter.

A few days later the film opened and was an immediate smash hit. My pictures, uncredited, were splashed all over Time magazine that called it “The best film of the year.” The edition of Newsweek put the first thorns in my side, when my pictures were credited to Richard Edlund, the special effects cinematographer.

I wrote a letter to Gary Kurtz suggesting that I put out a special edition of signed and numbered photographs I heard from Lucasfilm asking if I thought they should get a slice of the pie, to which I agreed, and I later heard from Fox that I should forget the whole idea. At least I had the prints I had made for myself.

Another thorn appeared when I found my photographs used on lunch buckets, t-shirts, and games, and all sorts of ancillary items going along with the movie. Another was to see a set of three fighters made from the same image with that tell-tale electric blue splash on their sides advertising Nikkor lenses. The original agreement was for publicity and promotion and this was going way beyond that. Star Wars may have been shot with Nikkor lenses, but the illustration was not. I called Gary Kurtz to complain. I was informed that everyone who worked for ILM was an employee whether for one day or the whole run and the product of their labors with all rights was the property of Lucasfilm/Twentieth Century Fox. Oh, yeah? If I was an employee instead of an independent contractor, where was my W-2 form? It was time to call a lawyer.

It would seem that according to copyright laws, while the image may belong to the creator, the rendering belongs to the photographer.

In the course of the lawsuit amidst depositions, questions and answers, there were some numbers discovered on the edge of the negatives. No one had the faintest idea what they were for. Richard Edllund excluded the photos of the surface of the Death Star and such as had blue static electricity streaks and claimed all the rest as his. My attorney was not an intellectual properties lawyer and did not cut me the best settlement. While the financial settlement was about what I would have been paid if I had collected what I should have plus the lawyer’s cut, the credits went to Richard Edlund and all rights went to Lucasfillm/Twentieth Century Fox. A man who became one of my closest friends and was an intellectual properties lawyer and he claims he would have cut a much more attractive deal, that would have included penalties for copyright violation.

We did eventually discover the reason for the numbers on the edge of the negatives, they were placed there by the photo lab that processed them in the first place. Those numbers were on the photos Edlund conceded were mine. They were also on the rest of the photos I claimed as mine and Edlund claimed as his, proving rather conclusively that they were mine, but that is not part of the official settlement.

So, I had the money, but no credits and no rights. I did, however, have the prints I had made with Gary Kurtz’ blessing. I gave a few away and the rest lay in an Ektacolor paper box for the next thirty three years.

Below are some of the images that are part of his collection.  Essentially, there were 19 total unique images made of the various starships represented in this collection, though all were produced in 1977 and some duplicated vary based on how they were developed and aging over time (though all were kept in photo boxes, so sheltered from sunlight all these decades later).  The images in our catalouge are essentially photographs of photographs, so I can’t stress enough how stellar that they look in person (they are printed glossy, so extremely difficult to photograph without reflection and too large for us to scan):

Interestingly, I had mentioned Colin Cantwell, and he is very relevant here as well, in that Jack Warford was given a set of 148 unique 4×6 photos that he believed were taken by Richard Edlund before he was hired to do his own starship model photography.  This extensive collection of 148 unique images also include photos not just of the filming models, but the prototype models created by Cantwell, offering some never-before-seen angles of these rare production pieces.

The entire first season of Prop Culture is dropping on the Disney+ streaming service starting May 1, 2020, featuring all eight episodes.  The series by ABC Studios and Cinema Relics Productions and distributed by Disney+ is a documentary/docuseries featuring host and Executive Producer Dan Lanigan as he revisits popular Disney films from the perspective of learning more about the people who brought the movies to life as well as taking a closer look at the props, costumes, and other production assets, techniques and effects employed in each.

My updates on the Original Prop Blog have been sparse since the beginning of 2019, as I worked as a producer on this series and then immediately moved into my full-time role with Julien’s Auctions, so I have been very, very busy.  Since my last update in early January, I have since taken on the role of Chief Operating Officer with Julien’s and I’ve also completely relocated to Los Angeles, so have had no time to publish my typical articles on the site.

Since I personally worked on Prop Culture, I, of course, wanted to update the followers of the Original Prop Blog as to it finally being made available to watch on Disney+.

I have had an ongoing tradition of publishing an annual review of my personal observations and opinions with regards to the business of buying, collecting, selling, and preserving original pop culture artifacts used in film and television productions (see 2007 Year in Review, 2008 Year in Review, 2009 Year in Review, 2010 Year in Review, 2011 Year in Review, 2012 Year in Review, 2013 Year in Review, 2014 Year in Review, 2015 Year in Review, 2016 Year in Review, 2017 Year in Review, 2018 Year in Review). This will be the first year since launching the Original Prop Blog that I won’t be publishing such a review.

A lot of interesting events and developments had taken place over the course of the year.  However, in 2019, I was so busy, I did not have time to keep up with it all and report back here…  though I had every intention of doing so.  For that, I apologize.  In the future, my hope is to carve out some time to publish interesting content here again (whether in written or video form).

For anyone who is interested, I can share a little bit about my own personal and professional experiences in 2019, which funny enough directly pertain to this art market.  It was a truly unbelievable year for me last year – one that I never could have imagined.

At the very start of the 2019, I began work on a docuseries for ABC Studios for Disney+ that is all about movie props and costumes.  I’m not sure what I am authorized to say about this show prior to its release, so I will pretty much leave it at that, but it was a very interesting experience to be sure.

Once I completed my work on the show, I went on to begin a new career with Julien’s Auctions.  I’d consulted to Julien’s for many, many years, but this was a major change for me, as I went on to work for the company full-time in a newly created position as the Director of Marketing, New Media, and Contemporary Pop Culture.

This was an amazing opportunity.  I wish I could tell just some of the stories about experiences I had throughout the year.  I was very involved with the company in many different capacities…  and very, very busy!  Hence the lack of updates on the Original Prop Blog since August.

We had a lot of amazing things up for sale and many auction events – which I would have loved to have promoted here on this site – but I was so pressed for time.  I took the position that if I didn’t have time to cover ALL of the industry, I thought it appropriate to simply go silent while I was engaged with other things.

In any event, I very much look forward to 2020.  This month, I’ve taken on a new role at Julien’s Auctions as Chief Operating Officer (COO), so I will be very centrally involved in managing all facets of the business.

I really do appreciate all of the contact that I’ve had with collectors and others in the industry throughout last year.

I did wear my “Original Prop Blog” hat with one-on-one interactions with hobbyists who reached out to me directly, and I hope that I have been able to at least provide some direct assistance with my efforts.

I have also referred many, many people to the Movie Props group on Facebook, which I feel is a tremendous resource for collectors.  Though my participation has been limited, I am a big fan.  Back when I helped to run the MPF forum years and years ago, my biggest gripe was that people could participate without using their real name.  With this Facebook group, it is required by default.  With around 30,000 members, it is just amazing and what I always hoped an online forum about this hobby could be.  So I suppose if I had to pick my #1 favorite thing of 2019 as part of my annual list, it would be a big vote of support and admiration for that forum and those that make it happen.

This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2019. 2019 is the first year that Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! exhibited pieces from the collection in the main exhibit hall.  On display was the lightsaber prop purchased from Profiles in History and attributed to use by Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back, the Han Solo blaster from Return of the Jedi purchased from Julien’s Auctions, and a Hoverboard from Back To The Future Part II and a bullwhip from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.  In that I cataloged the Han Solo blaster for Julien’s, I noticed that it appears to have since been damaged (and as you’ll note in the photos, the handle of the blaster is held in place by some gum-like material in this display.

This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2019. This is the first year that there was not separate exhibit space for both Warner Bros and DC Comics.  In 2019, DC Comics has been folded into the Warner Bros exhibit.  This now mirrors Marvel, which has one exhibit space as Marvel Entertainment.  I would say that this is reflective of the current state of the comic book business, which I suspect is heavily subsidized by films (at least in the case of Marvel) and other programming, as well as licensing and merchandising.  Sadly, while comic books used to be the primary business for Marvel and DC when I was growing up, it’s now likely to continue to shrink and may eventually go away altogether.  In any event, the Warner Bros booth had some original costumes from Batman films on display (with more on display at the Comic-Con Museum (which is off site, so I did not attend)

This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Comedy Central is rebooting the old Crank Yankers show (originally created by Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel.  I actually used to watch the original, as I moved to L.A. in 1995 when Adam was Mr. Birchum and Jimmy was the sports guy on KROQ, so I’ve followed their careers for many decades now.  This exhibit was pretty fun and interesting, as you could pick up a phone and hear pre-recorded crank calls.  Maybe just as funny was watching younger attendees puzzled about how telephones work.  In any event, the staff said that these were original, production used puppets, so they qualified for some coverage on the Original Prop Blog.

This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Tom Spina was one of the first collectors I came into contact with back in 2002, and one of the first guys I met in person in 2005.  As Tom and his businesses – Regal Robot (“art decor and furniture”) and Tom Spina Designs (“unique creations for marketing, trade shows, theme parks, film/video, collectors, museums… anyone!”)- are based on the east coast, I was thrilled to learn that he was not only attending San Diego Comic Con this year, but also exhibiting as Regal Robot.  He brought along a lot of cool merch (as an official licensee for his Star Wars products).  Of course, Tom is know all around the world for the peerless work of he and his colleagues in not only their creative work but restoration and display work for original props, costumes, and other film and television production assets.

This is part of my ongoing series of YouTube videos, with a follow up to my recent look at the Bonhams “TCM Presents … Wonders of the Galaxy – Science Fiction and Fantasy in Film” auction that took place today, May 14th, in Los Angeles. This latest video editorial provides an update to Lot 162 described as “A complete Darth Vader costume from The Empire Strikes Back/Star Wars Episode V”.  Shortly before the auction was scheduled to begin, the status of the costume was changed to “WITHDRAWN”.  However, the Darth Vader gloves from Star Wars were not withdrawn, though failed to reach the unstated reserve, stalled at $28,000.

The Los Angeles Times published a news feature about the costume an hour or so before the auction, though it was updated a few times throughout the day, and ultimately provided the following statement from Bonhams:

“Bonhams, together with Mr. [Bryce] Kermit Eller and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, agreed to withdraw from auction the Darth Vader costume from ‘The Empire Strikes Back.’”

This is part of my ongoing series of YouTube videos, with this one taking a close-up look at the upcoming Bonhams “TCM Presents … Wonders of the Galaxy – Science Fiction and Fantasy in Film” auction taking place on May 14th in Los Angeles.  This latest video editorial specifically takes a closer look at Lot 162 described as “A complete Darth Vader costume from The Empire Strikes Back/Star Wars Episode V”. 

Features about this Darth Vader costume have been all over the mainstream media, particularly circa May 4th (“May The 4th Be With You”).  Many of these mainstream media articles and broadcasts would lead the average viewer to believe that this costume was made for and even worn in The Empire Strikes Back.  However, some in this art market have differing views, believing that it was not production made, but made specifically as a “touring costume” or “promotional costume”.

Per the article from Reuters, the statement from Profiles in History is as follows:

“In light of conflicting information regarding the origin of Roger Christian’s Lightsaber, Profiles in History has decided to withdraw the piece from this auction until Mr. Christian can clear up the inconsistencies that have been brought to our attention”

This is a Part 4 follow-up my Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3 close-up looks at the “[o]riginal production used “Luke Skywalker” lightsaber from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope from the collection of Oscar-winning set decorator Roger Christian” featured in the upcoming Profiles in History “Hollywood Auction 96” taking place on December 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th (the lightsaber specifically is scheduled to go under the hammer on December 13th). This latest video highlights a “Reader Comment” made today by Roger Christian himself.  As he took the time to respond to some of my questions in my prior videos as well as correct a few mistakes made by me, I wanted to bring attention to the comment that he published in order to share it with anyone who might have watched prior videos on YouTube and/or read prior articles here on the Original Prop Blog.  One of my primary questions was whether or not the prop lightsaber seen in the photos on the Letter of Authenticity (LOA) is the same lightsaber or a different lightsaber from the one up for auction and as seen in the photos published by Profiles in History in their auction catalog and in the online listing at iCollector.  Today, Roger Christian says that: “[t]he two photos immediately below my signature in my COA depict the exact same lightsaber that is being sold by Profiles in History”.

In your comparison photos there is a scratch on the lever of the clasp holding the bubble strip that matches exactly in all three shots: the image you took at Comic Con, the image I shot for authentication, and the image from Profiles in History’s catalog. My authentication images were taken in darker lighting conditions which explains the darker impression of that rivet head on the lever. Lighting changes everything, especially with chrome objects.
You state the ringed bracket holding the bubble strip is made in a fixed position. This is simply not accurate. When the lever is loosened, the ring assembly can be moved. This explains the different position of the bubble strip you noted in your comparison and also explains the variation you saw on the corners of the T-strip because you were comparing two different T-strips since they are located at different sides of the hilt. The variable positioning of the bubble strip is seen by looking at the original set photos from the film.

The reference photo with the red rectangles I took from an online publication which must have been your blog. It neatly illustrated what modifications I stuck onto the Graflex handle to make the lightsaber.

Primary Outstanding Question

As noted in my YouTube video – (per Roger Christian’s statement today “[t]he two photos immediately below my signature in my COA depict the exact same lightsaber that is being sold by Profiles in History”) – my primary outstanding question is the following:

How does one reconcile the statement made in the October 2017 Letter of Authenticity (LOA) (“This Lightsaber below is one of the originals…”) with the prior statement made in the January 2016 post on the Cinema Alchemist Facebook Page (“This is an exact prototype of Luke’s lightsaber…”), if both are referring to the same lightsaber depicted in the same set of photos?

Especially in the context of the prior statement made on the June 2015 Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything)?

What precisely is the definition of the word “prototype”?

This latest video primarily looks into additional discrepancies between the lightsaber depicted in the Letter of Authenticity (LOA) and the lightsaber depicted in the auction catalog, in the online iCollector listing, and that was on display at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, as well as Roger Christian’s own characterization of the same in various interviews over the years.

As updated with on-screen notes within the video, I did find that the documentary The Galaxy Britain Built: Droids, Darth Vader and Lightsabers appears to have originally aired in December 2017 on The BBC.  As a reminder, the Letter of Authenticity for the lightsaber in this upcoming public auction is dated October 2017.  I don’t have any information of the lead time of the documentary from production to release.

As noted in this latest video, since the publication of the first video, I was reminded that the consignor and owner of the current lightsaber up for auction – Roger Chrisitan – had years ago registered for the Original Prop Blog and posted a “Reader Comment” to challenge the authenticity and provenance of a prop in the collection of the National Rifle Association’s National Firearms Museum in Virginia.  The Natinnal Firearms Museum also have a Graflex flashgun which they claim is an original Luke Skywalker lightsaber that was from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.  Roger Christian replied to a “Reader Comment” from Jim Supica, Director, National Firearms Museum, saying in part “…the one shown here in the museum is simply an original graflex flax handle which anyone can buy”.

In preparing this YouTube video and article, I also noticed that one of the images in the current Profiles in History LOA for this lightsaber was borrowed from the very article to which Mr. Christian had published his “Reader Comment”.

This is part of my new, ongoing series of YouTube videos, with this one taking a close-up look at the upcoming Profiles in History “Hollywood Auction 96” taking place on December 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th.  As a follow-up to the previously posted overall preview of the auction, this latest video editorial specifically takes a closer look at Lot 1479 described as the “[o]riginal production used “Luke Skywalker” lightsaber from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope from the collection of Oscar-winning set decorator Roger Christian”. 

I recorded the video yesterday afternoon, and I wanted to make note of a few things that have happened subsequent to completing my video.

I mentioned toward the end of the video that I had applied to join the Facebook group, Graflex Addicts, and had not been approved.  This morning my request was approved, so thank you to those involved (I have since perused some of the on point discussions which I found enlightening, but such content is not reflected in this video as I just today gained access).

Also, I reference the tweet made my Mark Hamill yesterday, and if you watch my video, I took issue with the spin many mainstream media outlets put on reporting on his tweet by way of their click bait headlines – I speculated that Mr. Hamill was merely pointing out that there were many Luke lightsaber props made for the films, which is not consistent with some of the headlines I viewed yesterday…  well very early this morning Mr. Hamill replied with a new tweet in reaction to the two tweets (1 2) made by Mr. Christian yesterday, and pretty much confirmed exactly how I interpreted his original tweet.

Additionally, in reading some of the comments to Mr. Hamill’s tweets, I came across a link to a very well produced document about lightsabers used in the Star Wars films that I would have referenced in the video, but again, the video was completed and I just found it this morning, but I wanted to share it here as it is a wealth of information in a beautifully assembled PDF package: “Star Wars: The Lightsaber Prop Guidebook” Written and Designed by Seth M. Sherwood

Lastly, I did not notice until this morning that there is a second, newer publicly posted topic on the Replica Prop Forum which was started this week which has further commentary, thoughts and opinions as part of the public debate on this auction house offering made to the public: PIH Selling Another “Original” Luke ANH Hilt

As an aside, I mentioned in my overall preview video for the Profiles in History auctions happening in December, I would take a closer look at all of the Star Wars pieces in this auction.  I did not want to complicate this current video further (or make it even longer), so this video only looks at the one lot in this auction – the lightsaber attributed to the character of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope.

1479. Original production used “Luke Skywalker” lightsaber from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope from the collection of Oscar-winning set decorator Roger Christian who built all the original lightsabers for the first Star Wars film. (TCF, 1977) This lightsaber is consigned directly from Roger Christian, the original set decorator for Star Wars. Included is a signed Letter of Authenticity from Christian stating the following: “As the Academy Award winning set decorator for Star Wars: A New Hope, one of my responsibilities was to make the iconic Lightsaber for Luke Skywalker, the one below in the picture in Tunisia is one of them I created based on the Graflex flash handle. I handmade about five to use during the filming and the one you are buying is one of those used throughout the filming in London. This is the actual design of the Lightsaber from A New Hope, as presented to Luke by Obi Wan Kenobi as his Father’s weapon and part of my private collection. This original design had the bubble strip I placed in the clip, you can clearly see here and on the pictures below. Each lightsaber was hand made by me as Set Decorator, using whatever I could lay my hands on at the time to create the T-strip for the handle, the D-ring on the end and the bubble strip. My invention of creating the weapons, props and sets using real guns, scrap airplane parts and found objects gave Star Wars the organic reality look for the first time in science fiction cinema. This Lightsaber below is one of the originals and it is authenticated as made by me, the maker of Luke’s Lightsaber, for which I won the Academy Award. [Signed:] Roger Christian Oct. 2017.”

Included is a signed copy of Christian’s book, Cinema Alchemist, describing in detail how he made this iconic lightsaber, arguably the most iconic prop in the history of cinema. Highlights of the upcoming auction include Batman’s (Adam West) signature bat shield prop from Batman (1966-1968) (estimated $400,000-$600,000) and Riddler’s (Frank Gorshin) “?” green jacket ensemble from the first episode of the classic 1960s television series Batman (estimated $100,000 – $150,000), Uncle Martin’s 10-foot spaceship from My Favorite Martian (1963-1966) (estimated $80,000-100,000) and Captain Kirk’s (William Shatner) Grecian toga worn while kissing Lieutenant Uhura in one of the very first interracial kisses on television – that took place 50 years ago this month – on Star Trek: The Original Series (estimated at $60,000-80,000), as well as a stellar selection of over 50 costumes, sketches, jewelry and correspondence lots from Star Trek acquired from series costume designer William Ware Theiss.

A selection of highlights will be on display in an auction preview exhibition at Prop Store from Monday, November 26 to Saturday, December 1. The exhibition is open to the public and free-to-enter.

This is the first in a new series of videos that I will be publishing on YouTube, to supplement the ongoing content on the Original Prop Blog.  I have in the past published the occasional video on YouTube, but I saw the platform more as a place to host videos rather than as a “channel” per se, so mixed among content intended for the Original Prop Blog were other videos that had nothing to do with the Original Prop Blog.  So this is a brand new channel going forward, and my hope and intentions are to use the video format more regularly in order to produce some different content than what has been the norm.  Further explanations are provided in this first introductory video.

Truly pioneers in this art market for the past 15 years, the men behind online retailer and auction house ScreenUsed have been viewed by myself and many others as “collectors first”, as their passion for the artifacts that they’ve found, archived, and brought to market has always been quite evident if you’ve ever had the opportunity to talk with either of them in person or on the phone.  These have always been two guys that love film and television, and have always been excited by the magic of holding something special from a favorite movie or TV show.  Today, visitors to their famous website at www.ScreenUsed.com learned that they’ve decided to close up shop.

The announcement:

In addition to their online sales via their website, ScreenUsed launched their live auction business in 2012 and just earlier this year opened their SU Outlet store in Canoga Park.

In any event, I don’t know the reason behind their decisions, but I truly wish Desi and Jeff the best, and I hope that they will still be involved as collectors.

I came into the hobby around the same time that they launched ScreenUsed back in 2003, and I remember the excitement I had looking through the site at all of the amazing pieces that they had in their collections and up for sale.

I actually began my own original prop and costume collecting with the film Mystery Men.  It wasn’t a successful film, so things could be had relatively cheap.  Many of my first purchases were actually with ScreenUsed, and they were so helpful to this guy who was completely clueless about collecting at the time.  They also sold me some of my coolest pieces early on as I moved on to more popular films.

I remember the first time I visited Desi’s house and seeing his personal collection.  It was more impressive than anything I’d seen at public museums.  It was remarkable.  But not just the pieces, but the stories and histories of each that Desi would share as we went along.  He had such a wealth of information about each and every piece.  Research wasn’t a chore for him; quite the opposite.

So I am sad to see that this company will be no more.  ScreenUsed is one of the very few companies that I would refer people to (to buy and consign) knowing that it would be a positive experience.  Like I said, I hope the two gentlemen will still be around, but regardless, I will always hold them and their work and contributions to this art market in high regard.

The catalog for Sotheby’s “Creating a Stage: The Collection of Marsha and Robin Williams” auction is now online, featuring over 300 items from his lift and career, and time with his second wife, Marsha Williams.  In addition to entertainment memorabilia is art (particularly a lot of street art), decorative art, furniture, watches and more.  A portion of the proceeds is intended to benefit Human Rights Watch, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, Challenged Athletes Foundation, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and Wounded Warrior Project, as well as to help fund a scholarship at The Juilliard School in New York.  An exhibit in Los Angeles is running through September 14th with a follow up in New York from September 29th through October 3rd.  The auction will take place in New York on October 4th.

Online viewing and pre-bidding of lots began on August 11 and runs through August 25 at 10am PST. The live online auction begins at 10am PST on Saturday, August 25, 2018.

ScreenUsed has been hosting auctions and selling original film and television production memorabilia since 2003 with auctions active on their website year-round plus periodic special auctions. So I’ve been attending San Diego Comic Con since 1987 (when I was 14 years old), so I have a lot of history with the world’s most famous annual pop culture gathering.  Some years are better than others, though for several years running it has, from a subjective standpoint, felt like it was overall in decline (weighing the positives and negatives).  However, I believe that things have shifted direction in 2018, so here are my thoughts on Comic-Con International this time around.

There seems to be a consensus with at least some of the other old timers I know that things over the past few years have left us feeling a bit like things aren’t anything like they used to be.  And that won’t ever really return, as so much has changed in the past three decades.

Even the nature of comic books are large have changed dramatically, which has nothing to do with comic book conventions at all.  I was at a smaller con over the weekend talking with a comic store owner who travels to sell at conventions every week all over the U.S.  It doesn’t seem that many people even read comic books anymore, and the nature of comics as collectibles has changed dramatically.  Key issues are worth a lot more, and everything else, in many cases is literally worthless.  It’s quite strange how much things have changed.  And those that do still read comics are just as likely to download their comic books versus buying “real” copies at a store, because again, they just aren’t as collectible as they used to be.  The industry has really been flipped on it’s head compared to what it was in the early 90s.

But there is still a presence of comic books at San Diego Comic Con, though it will never be what it was.  It has certainly transformed to become more of a “pop culture” event.  And even that keeps shifting (in good and bad ways).

I had found myself feeling that four to five days was a bit much each year, so in 2017, I actually did all of my usual coverage all in one day, as the hassle of securing a hotel close to the convention has more and more each year become more a game of chance with the scrambling for what has become a hotel lottery system.

So with 2018, I basically told myself if I could get a hotel within a few blocks of the convention center, I would go the full length of the show; otherwise I would limit myself to a one day visit.  To my surprise, I was lucky enough to get the Hyatt Manchester, which is adjacent to the Marriott Marquis (where I’ve stayed many times), which in turn is adjacent to the convention.  And it was actually my favorite place I’ve ever stayed during Comic Con.  It was very close, but not too close.

There were some things that continued on in 2018, which I found unfortunate in past years.  Probably #2 on my list was the prevalence of dealers selling “loot boxes”.  I’ve always found this practice to be pretty despicable, in that for the most part predator dealers are taking advantage of children and ripping them off what was is essentially gambling.  Though gambling might be too kind a word, as that implies that there is a chance that a customer will be pleased with what they’ve gotten, or that there is a chance to get something with a value that is higher than what they’ve spent.  For those unfamiliar with the practice, a significant portion of the main convention center has been taken over by dealers selling mystery boxes… they sometimes promise what “might” be in them…  but obviously there is no oversight over any of it, so I assume it is all mostly just junk.  And this is being sold to kids.  And a lot of it is sold in boxes showcases various franchises and brands, and I suspect much of this is completely without license or authorization from the rights holders of those properties.  It’s akin to the trashiest, low end parking lot carnivals with games of chance rigged to be unwinnable, with big prizes no one ever actually wins.  I imagine that there are a lot of honest and legitimate dealers turned away from Comic Con each year due to space.  I would like to see all of these bullshit merchants not invited back, and to let Comic Con be a place that is not targeting minors to take advantage of them by fleecing them of their money, in exchange for worthless junk and disappointment.

#1 on my list over the past few years at San Diego Comic Con, on my personal negatives list, as been security.  Given the dangerous world we live in today, San Diego Comic Con has been a huge potential soft target, and I’ve always found it very worrying.  And experiencing the con, it has never felt very safe.  Much of it volunteer run, in past years walking the convention I would go hours without seeing an actual uniformed law enforcement officer, and the ease with which one could not only enter the convention (even without a badge or credentials) as well as do so with presumably faux weapons and/or unchecked cases and rolling luggage has always been worrisome to say the least.

2018 was the first year I’ve seen a real shift in beefing up the security.  It still needs a lot of improvement, but it was much, much, much improved compared with even 2017.  They shut down the main road in front of the convention center, which they should have done ten years ago.  They required at least a visual check on badges near the exterior of the convention center.  There was much more of a real law enforcement presence in and around the convention center.  And I noticed a lot of adjustments overall.  So kudos to the organizers for finally taking a big leap in the right direction on this front.

Overall though, I found the show to be very enjoyable.  There was an impressive presence of original props and costumes from the usual entities that showcase such things.  It didn’t “feel” quite as oversold as in past years.  So I left feeling pretty happy about the experience overall this year, and look forward to 2019.

This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Off site from the convention center, across the street in the Gaslamp District, there was a special event at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp: The DC Universe Experience.  The interactive experience – which included “Doom Patrol Chief’s Lab”, Titans Dick Grayson’s Loft”, “Harley Quinn Chaos Room”, “Swamp Thing Swamp Course”, and “Young Justice Watch Tower” also included a number of original TV and movie props and costumes from past and upcoming DC properties.  All was put together to promote the new “DC Universe” “digital experience” membership to watch, shop, read and connect.

The displays included all of the key super hero costumes from the upcoming Titans web television series that will air on DC Universe, based on the DC Comics Teen Titans series.  In addition were vehicles from Batman films as well as some other props and production documents and artwork, as well as a helmet from the original 70s Wonder Woman television series.  Much of this was on loan from the Warner Bros Corporate Archive.

This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Marvel is centrally located in the Exhibit Hall as per usual, though the exhibit space had original costume pieces up front and in a case this year, which is a departure from their usual open air displays up on the stage. I suspected Marvel might have more up their sleeve than what appeared on exhibit on Preview Night on Wednesday – Iron Man costumes – and stated if they added more as the convention went on, I would update that original article.  On Thursday, they added an example of each of the Captain America costumes seen in the related films, and I took so many photos I thought it would be better to publish a second dedicated feature.  This one shows the Captain America costumes worn by Chris Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War.  UPDATE Also see Wednesday/Part 1 with Iron Man, Friday/Part 3 with Thor and Part 4/Saturday “Women” & Part 5/Sunday “Villains”.

This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Profiles in History has been exhibiting at Comic-Con for many, many years, and on exhibit were movie props for the most part, from an as yet to be announced live auction.  The pieces ticked the boxes of many of their favorite franchises – Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Terminator, X-Men, Wizard of Oz, etc.

Interestingly (and completely coincidentally), Profiles in History and Prop Store each had their own versions of several pieces, with both showcasing game boards from Jumanji, First Order helmets from Star Wars, Dot Matrix masks from Space Balls, hoverboards from Back To The Future II, and Wolverine claws from X-Men.

Most interestingly, Profiles has unearthed yet another prop lightsaber attributed to the original Star Wars trilogy.

Schoppe Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Production Archive” that was featured in their “Hollywood Legends” auction this past weekend at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.  The highlight of the collection was an original Han Solo blaster movie prop from Return of the Jedi; James Schoppe served as the Art Director on the film, and was gifted several original props at the conclusion of the film production.  The collection was sold in live auction on Saturday, June 23rd, and the Han Solo blaster sold for $550,000 including Buyer’s Premium, and the winning bidder was Ripley’s Believe it or Not.  I was actually present for the auction, as well as shot video of some of the lots, so I thought I would share a few thoughts as well as the video of the Han Solo blaster selling

Funny enough, it was 11 years ago now that I was present for the World Famous Stembridge Armory Collection auction by Little John’s Auction Service in Los Angeles in 2007, in which one of the other original Han Solo blasters was sold at auction.  That was the blank firing version, and it sold for $201,600 with Buyer’s Premium.   You can read my accounting of that auction here:

With the “Hollywood Legends” sale by Julien’s on Saturday, the Star Wars section was set for the very end of the auction, with over 40 lots from James Schoppe closing things out.

In addition to the Han Solo blaster, there were two additional movie props – an Ewok axe and a Biker Scout blaster.  One thing I learned in talking with Mr. Schoppe is that the Biker Scout design is something that he came up with during production, and George Lucas himself chose that design among other ideas and that is what was duplicated for use in the film.

In addition to the three props were many other lots of original production paperwork and photos that captured much of the behind the scenes work that went into creating the film.  Mr. Schoppe himself was the one behind the cameras (also auctioned) for many of the photos sold in the auction.

As a note, the Star Wars collection was all offered at no reserve.  So if the highest bid on an item was $1, it would have sold for $1.  The lowest selling lots went for $192 including Buyer’s Premium, with the idea that anyone who wanted something had a chance.

In addition, Mr. Schoppe was present at the auction.  I’m not aware of any other high end Star Wars piece offered at public auction in which the consignor was a principal from the production and was not only involved in publicly bringing it to sale, but was also available for press and present on auction day as well.

The Biker Scout blaster was the first prop to come up for sale.  It had a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$30,000, and phone bidders drove the price up significantly past that estimate, ultimately selling for $90,625 including Buyer’s Premium.  This exceeded my own expectations, and I think potentially sets a new benchmark for blasters not associated with main characters in the original trilogy.

The Ewok axe came next among the three props, and it realized $11,250 including Buyer’s Premium.

There was a lot of excitement in the room once the Han blaster came up for auction.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the pre-sale estimate was $300,000-$500,000. Given that the last authentic hero Han Solo blaster sold for about $200,000 over ten years about, I thought that the high estimate seemed about right.  Pre-sale online bidding had already taken the price up to $150,000.

The action that followed on the high end was between two phone bidders.  The bidding stopped at $450,000 and that is where the hammer came down, resulting in a sale price of $550,000 with Buyer’s Premium.  Immediately the winning bidder was revealed to be Ripley’s Believe It Or Not.  Last year, Ripley’s paid $450,000 at auction for a lightsaber prop attributed to use by Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back.

All in all, I enjoyed watching the results of the auction, and hope that those who were interested in a piece of history from someone who helped make the film were able to win something.  It was a real privilege and honor to meet and work with Mr. Schoppe on his amazing archive of memorabilia related to his work on Return of the Jedi, and I am pleased that the Han Solo blaster is part of a collection that will be shared with the public in the future.

As mentioned last month, this week Prop Store is holding their first auction focusing on posters.  The Cinema Poster Live Auction in London on June 28th.  The principals behind Prop Store are well known for their love of Star Wars, so it is not surprising that their first poster sale features some significant pieces from the franchise, and what they star is “the most extensive collection of Star Wars posters ever to be offered on the open market”.  There is also an exhibit at London Odeon BFI IMAX cinema.

The catalog for the auction itself is an impressive collectable, with a non-standard size and the colorful images within, I enjoyed checking out what was in the sale…

The Daily Express have published a puff piece about Andrew Ainsworth (“the designer of the original stormtrooper”) today in an article by Gabriella Geisinger (see “How the Stormtrooper became Star Wars icon ‘More popular than Michelangelo’s David'”).  Ainsworth even compares himself to Michelangelo.  In the article, Ainsworth gives passing mention to Ralph McQuarrie for his original “sketch” of the Stormtrooper, and as in past interviews of course no mention at all of Liz Moore (who was responsible for the original Stormtrooper helmet sculpt) or Brian Muir (who was the first to sculpt armor parts).  And no mention of John Barry, (the production designer) or John Mollo (the wardrobe designer) who were also part of the team that created the Stormtrooper.  To be fair, Ainsworth deserves credit for what he did contribute to the original Star Wars film… but he always seems eager to take much more credit than is due.

The following images were released on the Replica Prop Forum many years ago now. These show two helmet sculpts which did not originate with Andrew Ainsworth, but, as I understand it, Liz Moore, and (as it’s been reported) predated Ainsworth’s work on the film. The example on the left is very close in appearance to the final Stormtrooper helmet design.

The massive Profiles in History “Icons & Legends of Hollywood” four day auction concluded on Friday, and it certainly illustrates some different results when compared to past sales held by the entertainment memorabilia auction house.  With over 2,000 lots, it was a tremendous amount of material for the market to absorb all at once, and I suspect that this was reflected in the results.  Though the official results have not yet been published on the official Profiles website as of the time of this writing, in going through the results published by internet bidding partner iCollector (and under the assumption that these results also reflect floor and phone bids), it would appear that approximately 45% of the lots were passed over with no bids.  I counted approximately 922 unsold lots, and adding up the total it appears that in the final sale that there were 2,050 lots (with 39 lots pulled prior to auction?)…  But the other compounding factor is how many lots were sold for far less than one might expect based on past sales.  Items that would ordinarily pull in $5,000+ were going for under $2,000 and sometimes even under $1,000.  With so much to choose from, it may have become a buyer’s market and it seemed as though some collectors were looking for deals – and finding them.

However, it seemed as though Profiles in many cases moved away from the “jackpot” reserve/estimate model (with a perceived higher than market value minimum bid required, so as to only require one bidder for a lot to realize a very high price), as many of the reserves/estimates on the lower and mid-level material seemed quite reasonable.

Of course, there was the periodic “home run” result, but these were few and far between overall, and there were some big misses in this regard as well.

I was fascinated reading the chat from collectors in various groups/forums as the sale carried on, as the reactions were quite different from what I’ve come to expect from these big Profiles events.

Leading into the auction, there was significant talk about issues with authentication and some of the descriptions as well as some pieces being outright wrong (leading out with the Obi-Wan lightsaber being pulled the same day the catalog was released online, and hence a number of lots being pulled pre-auction), so there was some added caution among savvy buyers, feeling an even bigger burden than usual to do their own research on lots that they were interested in buying (which everyone should always do anyway, regardless of the auction house).

Of course, one of the perplexing elements of this sale was the fact that a significant number of lots (though certainly not all) were identified by collectors as pieces from Planet Hollywood, yet “Planet Hollywood” appears no where in the catalog and auction descriptions.  So that critical piece of the history of the related items was not declared in the descriptions, and in some cases may be lost on the winning bidders of these items.  In this market, provenance and authenticity is everything, and in this case, a critical piece of information was not provided to potential buyers.

More, there is specific history with some of the pieces coming from Planet Hollywood that was lost in the translation.  As an example, prior to the auction I was in communication with Jim Latta, who worked with Planet Hollywood in acquisitions back in the day.  A friend of mine was interested in a high end piece in the auction, so I asked Jim about it.  He remembered that he was asked to take the lead in its restoration, as it was incomplete.  None of this history regarding restoration was part of the auction description.

I had a number of people reach out to me with specific concerns about specific pieces; some of these were pulled prior to auction and some were not.

I took a cursory skim through the results published on iCollector and have prepared some examples and highlights below…  All results include Buyer’s Premium.

• Five Figure sales ($10,000-$99,999): 93 lots or 4.5% of the total
• Four Figure sales ($1,000-$9,999): 654 lots or 32% of the total
• Three Figure sales ($100-$999): 372 lots or 18% of the total
• UNSOLD ($0): 922 lots or 45% of the total

Again, I am assuming that the iCollector results also reflect floor and phone bidders.

Per the Associated Press, the total for the sale was $6M.

Profiles in History has rightfully cultivated a reputation over the years of being THE go to auction house to get the highest (and sometimes “home run” and “jackpot”) results for your genre (sci-fi, action, fantasy, horror, etc) props and costumes.  While it is only one auction event, the management and results of this auction may alter that perception somewhat.  With almost half of lots passed and many going for below typical market value, it does not create a great sales pitch to future consignors.  More, their auctions seem to be getting bigger and bigger… creating a perception that there is way too much to promote pre-auction, and maybe too much for the market to absorb in one event.  Great pieces could easily get lost in the shuffle.  But this would attract buyers looking for deals.  So maybe a shift from seller’s market to buyer’s market.

I would imagine that if this sale was broken into two events – even if they were held just a few weeks apart – the pass rate would not have been as high, and the (relatively) lower end of the spectrum would have fared better.  But this is just my third party opinion (as someone who is not in the auction business).

It will be interesting to see if this is the start of an ongoing series of Planet Hollywood auctions or a one off event.

Writer Gary Baum has written an interesting primer on the art market for original production material from film and television for Hollywood Reporter, which was published today.  It takes a look at the market from several viewpoints – the increasing market and values, theft and fraud, some of the motivations behind collecting – and he interviewed principals in the industry such as Max Anderson of the Stan Lee Museum, Steve Sansweet of Rancho Obi-Wan, Darren Julien of Julien’s Auctions, James Comisar of the Comisar Collection, Joe Maddalena of Profiles in History, collector David Mandel, Jeff Pirtle of NBCUniversal, Brandon Alinger of Prop Store, Catherin Williamson of Bonhams, Laura Woolley of The Collector’s Lab, Jacob McMurray of Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture, Margaret Barrett of Heritage Auctions as well as law enforcement, and it also gives some history of the hobby (and business) of buying and selling high end memorabilia.
