The first Sunday in April, is General Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. It is a weekend full of faith promoting messages, gospel teachings, and love from our Heavenly Father. I hope you take time to participate with your families! This year, conference falls on Easter Sunday! What a neat gift.

The Primary talks for the month of April are based on the Come Follow Me lessons for children. Each talk is simple to read and understand. I hope they help make speaking in church easy for your family. Sunday mornings with kids can be a bit hectic!

Primary Leaders are welcome to download and print all of the April Primary Talks here.

April 12 Primary Talk: I Can Have A Soft Heart

In the scriptures we learn that Jesus wants us to have a soft heart. What does that mean?

A soft heart means we are willing to listen, to learn, and to feel the Holy Ghost. When our hearts are soft, the Lord can teach us important things.

There are examples of people in the scriptures who have hard hearts. They do not want to do what the Lord asks them to do and they refuse to see the miracles that happen around them. It is sad to see how much they miss out on because they choose to turn away.

The Lord says, “I will soften their hearts.” When our hearts are soft, we are kinder, we forgive faster, and we want to follow Jesus. I hope we can have soft hearts.

April 19 Primary Talk: Jesus Is My Rock

A rock is strong and steady. It doesn’t move when the wind blows or when storms come. When we say Jesus is our Rock, it means He is someone we can always count on. He never changes! He will always help us.

When life feels hard, or when we feel scared or unsure, Jesus can give us strength. When we pray, read the scriptures, or try to follow Him, it’s like standing on a strong rock that keeps us safe.

Jesus loves us so much. He wants us to come to Him. He promises to support us just like a strong rock supports everything that stands on it.

I know that Jesus is our Rock. He is always there for us, and He will never let us fall.

April 26 Primary Talk: Commandments Help Us To Be Happy

Jesus gives us commandments because He wants us to be happy.

Jesus loves us so much! That’s why He gives us commandments. They aren’t to make life harder—they’re to help us make good choices and return to Him.

It’s kind of like flying a kite. A kite needs a string to fly. If you cut the string, the kite doesn’t fly higher—it actually falls. The string gives the kite the support it needs to soar. Commandments are like that string. They guide us and help us stay close to Jesus so we can be truly happy.

When we keep the commandments we feel the Holy Ghost. That feeling brings real happiness.

Holding on to the commandments makes it possible for us to soar.

For many years, Relief Society meetings were structured primarily around the lesson. We would study a talk together, discuss a few questions, and then go home. There is absolutely value in gospel instruction, but recent direction from Church leaders has reminded us that Relief Society meetings are meant to be something more powerful than a classroom experience. They are meant to be a council. That shift changes everything.

Instead of simply talking about gospel principles in theory, we begin to counsel together about real life — about our families, our faith, our struggles, and the needs of the sisters around us. When we do this under the influence of the Spirit, something remarkable happens: revelation that is scattered among many hearts begins to come together. And that revelation helps us act.

Relief Society Discussion Questions and Thoughts for “Counseling Together”

“Heavenly Father meant so much more for His daughters in this space. We are meant to counsel together and to receive the revelation that is scattered among each of us to help one another. There is a reason we’re all in that same geographical space. He knew the problems we would face, and He knows the spiritual and temporal resources that are within our own Relief Societies.”
— Sister Kristen M. Yee

Relief Society Is Meant to Be a Council

The Church handbook and leadership resources have emphasized this idea clearly. We are not simply attending a lesson. We are a council with a purpose.

From the Church website:

Sunday elders quorum and Relief Society meetings should include “sufficient time” for “meaningful gospel instruction and discussion” about recent general conference messages (General Handbook, 8.2.1.2, 9.2.1.2). But an elders quorum or a Relief Society is not a class or a lesson. We have a work to do, and we do more than just talk about that work. Rather, we “sit in council” and promote righteous action—action that will help us all progress along the covenant path “with songs of everlasting joy” (Doctrine and Covenants 66:11).

When Relief Society truly becomes a council, it allows sisters to bring their experience, insight, and revelation into the conversation. And the Spirit can guide those conversations to meet real needs.

You can read more about this principle here: To Sit In Council

The Purpose of Counseling Together

As we counsel together, we keep these purposes in mind:

Living the gospel of Jesus Christ

Caring for those in need

Inviting all to receive the gospel

Uniting families for eternity

Those purposes shape the types of conversations we have in Relief Society. Instead of discussions that stay abstract or theoretical, we ask questions that help sisters reflect on their real experiences living the gospel.

Every conversation should also connect back to the Savior. No matter the topic—family life, trials, service, parenting, or discipleship—the discussion should ultimately point us toward Jesus Christ and His power to help us.

Why Questions Matter

One of the simplest ways to create meaningful Relief Society discussions is by asking good questions.

The right question can:

Invite the Spirit

Encourage thoughtful reflection

Help sisters share experiences and grow united

Reveal practical solutions

Strengthen testimonies

How have you made your prayers more meaningful?

Turning Discussion Into Action

One of the most important parts of counseling together is what happens after the discussion. If we just talk and leave it there, the council hasn’t really fulfilled its purpose.

President Jean B. Bingham, former Relief Society General President, taught: “At the end of your council, you need to have assignments. The most important work happens between meetings.”

In other words, when we counsel together and receive impressions from the Spirit, we should also act on those impressions. At the end of the discussion, leaders might invite sisters to consider a simple challenge, such as:

Reaching out to someone who might need friendship

Trying a new scripture study habit

Inviting someone to join them at church

Strengthening a family tradition

Serving someone in the ward or neighborhood

These small commitments turn discussion into discipleship.

What If No One Talks? Encouraging Participation in Relief Society

Almost every Relief Society teacher or leader has experienced this moment: you ask a thoughtful question… and the room goes completely silent. It can feel awkward, but it’s actually very normal. Many sisters want to participate—they may just feel shy, need time to think, or wonder if their thoughts are worth sharing. A quiet room doesn’t necessarily mean the question didn’t hit home. Sometimes the discussion just needs a little help getting started.

Give Sisters Time to Think

Often people simply need a moment to reflect. Instead of quickly filling the silence, allow a few seconds for people to think. A short pause can give someone the confidence to speak. You might even say, “Let’s take a moment to think about that.”

A GREAT way to give the sisters time to think is to send out the council questions before the lesson via whatever communication method you use: email, text, Circles, GroupMe, etc. Have them think about it a few days before Sunday comes.

Share a Simple and Personal Example First

If the room feels hesitant, it can help for the teacher to share a brief example. Hearing a simple, sincere answer often helps others realize their experiences are valuable too. When a Relief Society leader or teacher is open and vulnerable, it helps the other sisters feel like they can do the same.

Consider Your Questions

Most silence after a question comes from sisters either being unsure what the question means, feeling nervous about speaking up, or assuming the answer is too obvious to share. So, before you even ask the question, make sure it’s clear what is being asked and that it’s a good enough question to inspire more than just “basic” responses. To alleviate nerves, be vulnerable and open, when presenting the question.

Ask Sisters to Share Ahead of Time

Before Sunday evening comes, consider the nature of the question and reach out to a couple of sisters to specifically invite them to share their thoughts during the discussion topic. The more often someone speaks up, the easier it gets for them. Sometimes that initial personal invitation can get the ball rolling for more discussion in future councils.

Acknowledge Every Contribution

When someone does speak up, simply thanking them for sharing helps create a safe environment where others feel more comfortable participating. Over time, as sisters see that their thoughts are valued, participation naturally increases.

Even when discussions are quieter, meaningful things can still happen. The goal isn’t to force conversation—it’s to create a space where sisters can strengthen one another and feel the Spirit together.

Relief Society Is a Place of Revelation

Relief Society has always been much more than a weekly meeting. It is a gathering of covenant women who bring unique spiritual gifts, life experience, and inspiration.

When we truly counsel together:

The Spirit teaches us.

Sisters feel heard and valued.

Practical solutions emerge.

Faith grows stronger.

The Savior becomes the center of our conversations.

And just as Sister Kristen M. Yee taught, Heavenly Father placed us in our wards and Relief Societies on purpose. He knows the needs we will face. And He also knows the spiritual and temporal resources that exist within the women sitting beside us each Sunday. When we counsel together in faith, those resources begin to unfold—and Relief Society becomes exactly what the Lord intended it to be.

These printable primary talks are provided to help make speaking in Primary easy and fun for your child! They are written based on the Come Follow Me Topics for the month of March. I love that the Old Testament can be broken down into simple messages of love, reverence, obedience, and peace!
March 1 Primary Talk: Obedience Brings Blessings

When we choose to obey Heavenly Father, He can bless us and help us feel happy.

Obedience means following God’s commandments and doing the things Jesus taught—like being kind, praying, reading scriptures, and helping others.

In the scriptures, Heavenly Father promises that when we keep His commandments, we will prosper and be blessed. That means He will help us, guide us, and give us peace.

I know that when I choose the right, I feel happy inside. Heavenly Father loves us, and He gives us commandments because He wants us to be safe.

March 8 Primary Talk: Covenants Bring Us Closer To God

When we make covenants with Heavenly Father, we promise to follow Him, and He promises to bless us. We make covenants when we are baptized and when we take the sacrament each week. These covenants help us remember Jesus and try to be like Him.

When we keep our covenants, we feel the Holy Ghost more. The Holy Ghost helps us feel peace. And He guides us along the path back to Heavenly Father. Covenants bring us closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

I know that keeping my covenants helps me feel safe, happy, and loved. Heavenly Father wants to be close to us, and covenants are one way He helps us return to Him.

March 15 Primary Talk: We Can Flee Temptation

Heavenly Father loves us, so He gives us help when we face temptation. Temptation is when we feel like doing something we know isn’t right. We all feel that sometimes, but we never have to face it alone.

The scriptures teach that the Lord will always provide “a way to escape” temptation. That means He will help us choose the right. He might help us by giving us a good feeling from the Holy Ghost, reminding us of a commandment, or helping us think of something better to do.

When we pray, read scriptures, and listen to the Holy Ghost, it becomes easier to walk away from temptation and choose the right. Every time we choose the right, we grow stronger and closer to Jesus.

I’m grateful that the Lord helps me escape temptation and choose happiness.

March 22 Primary Talk: Jesus Saves Us

Jesus came to earth because He loves us. He taught us how to live, He showed us how to love others, and He gave His life so we can be forgiven and return to Heavenly Father.

Because of Jesus, we can repent, feel peace, and have hope. He saved us!

Jesus asks us to help others come closer to Him. We can do that by being kind, sharing the gospel, being a good example, and loving people the way He did. Even small things—like including someone, helping at home, or saying something nice—can help someone feel the Savior’s love.

I know Jesus is our Savior, and I’m grateful He came to earth for us. When we follow Him and help others, we help bring His light into the world.

March 29 Primary Talk: I Can Be Reverent

Reverence means treating sacred things with love and respect. Sacred things include the chapel, the scriptures, the sacrament, and the temple. When we are quiet, listen, and act kindly in these places, we show Heavenly Father that we honor Him.

Jesus taught us to love God with all our hearts. One way we show that love is by being reverent.

Reverence helps us feel the Holy Ghost and helps us remember that we are in a special place or doing a special thing.

When we show reverence, we are telling Heavenly Father, “I love You!”

I’m grateful that we can show love and respect to God and Jesus by being reverent.

Let’s get right to it. Yes, I will totally send you a free Book of Mormon without missionaries and this offer NEVER EXPIRES. There’s absolutely no strings attached. Nobody is going to come knocking at your door. You will not be on the ‘Mormon’ radar. You’re totally safe, my friend. I have sent out thousands of Books of Mormon all over the world (40+ countries) and have been doing it for years. There’s no funny business here. I don’t share your address, name, email, etc. It seems to be a common concern from those who email me, so I wanted to get that out of the way right now. Are we good??

Sweet. Okay!

A few things about ordering your free Book of Mormon Without Missionaries …

Pretty-Please DO NOT Order If …

If you are currently an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I am going to KINDLY ask that you NOT email me asking for a package. I use my personal time and money to put together and ship these packages, so it gets kinda pricey and time-consuming.

If you are currently a member of The Church and would like a physical copy of the book, your Bishop has them available. Oh, and if you wouldn’t mind sharing this post, that would be wonderful. Thank you for understanding!!!

If You’re Ready to Order Right Now …

There’s a few things (all below) that I would love to share with you. But, if you need to come back to it later and get this party started, here’s what you need to do.

In the United States or Canada: Email me at ladies@oneshetwoshe.com with your NAME and MAILING ADDRESS. In the subject line, put something like ‘Book of Mormon Request.’ That’s it.

Outside of the United States: Email me at ladies@oneshetwoshe.com. To prevent expensive returned packages, I need your NAME, ADDRESS, and PHONE NUMBER. I’m not going to call you, I promise. This is for the post office in your country to call you if there’s a delivery issue (and, it’s not unusual that there is…. so, PLEASE add that phone number.) In the subject line, put ‘Book of Mormon Request.’

But wait, a few important things before you email your request:

Please don’t ask me to ship a book to someone who hasn’t requested it. Too many books have been returned to me from people who don’t actually want them, so it ends up wasting money. If someone wants a book, I prefer they request it for themselves.

Please use your REAL name. I know it’s tempting to give me a fake name, in case I’m tricking you and actually sending missionaries to your house and putting you on a mailing list. I’m not. I don’t know how else to convince you. But, using a fake name can cause issues with shipping and books returned to me. This seems to happen a lot.

Please double check your address that it is EXACTLY how it should be written on the envelope I send. Again, too many books have been returned because of an “incomplete” or “incorrect” address. For shipments outside the U.S., please read the next bullet point…

For shipments outside the United States or Canada, please include your phone number for me to add to the package. It allows the post office to contact you if they have questions about delivery. I will not ship to these continents without a phone number with the address on the package.

I can only send you ONE book. If you want more than one, you can purchase them on the Deseret Book website.

I don’t have Bibles, The Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, or study guides available to send out. You can also purchase those on that same site or read them online (see the bottom of this post for info on that.)

This offer doesn’t expire. Sometimes I update the post publish date, to help alleviate your fears that I’m not doing this anymore. But, even if this post doesn’t seem super current, I promise… I’ll still send your book out.

And again, if you’re a member of the Church already, please ask your local Bishop for a Book of Mormon, rather than have me send you one.

Basically, what I’m getting at is…

I receive multiple requests every single day, which I really LOVE, but I just ask that you respect that this is my personal, family money (a blessing from God) and monetary donations from a dear friend that I am using. Each package costs anywhere from $6 to $30 to send, depending on where it is shipping to. So, I am spending several hundreds of dollars every single month. It’s a lot for me, but it is worth it, because this book is awesome and if approached correctly, will change your life for the better. I know that God will bless me to have the money I need to ship these books for Him. So, don’t hesitate to ask. I just wanted to make sure we avoid being wasteful of God’s money, as much as possible, and following the guidelines above really helps! Thank you!!

And, if you want…

If you want to, I would love for you to share with me, in your email, what prompted you to send your request. It’s always fun to get some insight on where my readers are coming from in life and feel a little personal connection when I send the free Book of Mormon out. But, totally optional. I just love when it happens.

What happens after I get your email…

I respond to every email I receive, but it seems like two weeks is my average email response time… so, don’t think I’m ignoring you! I try to hide from my 7 kids and sit down once a week to catch up on emails.

When I email you, I’ll send you my list of awesome resources to help you learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and understand The Book of Mormon better, when you read it.

I ship the packages out once a week. I know it can be a bummer to wait, but it makes this project a little more doable, when I can do a bunch at once. However, see below on where to go to learn more while you’re waiting for your package to arrive.

Of course, if you would like to have missionaries come, I think that’s awesome. They can give you a free book, teach you more, attend church with you, etc. You can line all of that up at The Church’s website, Come Unto Christ. But, I’m leaving that up to you to take care of.

Why Am I Doing This??

I love Christ. I love the scriptures, especially The Book of Mormon. And, I love my family. The world can be so chaotic and disheartening. But, there are a few things that incite true joy, keep me calm, give me direction, bring me hope, and comfort me… and it is THOSE things, in THAT order: Christ, His Word, and my family. I have learned, just from being alive in this world, that those feelings seem to be in short supply. People don’t always know where to find them and are often lonely, angry, confused, bitter, defeated, guilt-ridden, scared, etc. It doesn’t need to be that way. The knowledge of where to find peace and joy has been so valuable to me and my family. I have to share it!

If you are looking for those wonderful feelings, if you want to step away from the negativity, receive some guidance, and feel some peace, let me tell you something… every step you take TOWARDS Christ will bring light to your life. It’s not some hokey made-up nonsense, like some people would have you believe… it’s absolutely true. And, why not test it out for yourself? Like, sincerely test it out… coming at it with an open heart and a true desire to know, and to have what I claim is available. Try it and see how you feel inside. It’s worth any effort. I promise.

There’s a scripture in The Book of Mormon, in the book of Moroni that reads…

“And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.” Moroni 10:4-5

The super cool thing is you don’t need to blindly believe. I don’t want to convince you. You can know for yourself because God believes you should know for yourself. He knows that you need your own personal witness of what’s true, to truly focus your life correctly. He wants that for you and the truths you need will come from His Spirit. The confirmation won’t come from me, from your neighbor, Google, your pastor/priest/church leader, parent, anyone… it will come from The Spirit, specifically to you. I think that’s a pretty awesome gift from God.

Above, I mentioned taking steps towards Christ. This is a one-step-at-a-time kind of thing and every step counts. Taking steps can be a variety of things: saying a prayer, reading your scriptures, attending church, serving others, and so on. It can even be as simple as sending me an email asking for this free package and desiring to learn more. That’s a step, because The Book of Mormon testifies of Christ over and over and over again! And, when you receive it, take another step and crack it open. Heck, maybe take a double-step and pray beforehand to be guided, while you read, to know whether what you are reading is of God or not. EVERY STEP YOU TAKE TOWARDS CHRIST WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE… a wonderful difference.

Anyway, THAT is why I’m doing this. I want you to have the ultimate joy and peace inside that you crave. When you request your package, I’ll be sure to include some of my more personal thoughts and experience, typed up, about why this is important to me. But for now, I’m going to refer you to this post about the Mormon religion: 10 Reasons I Love Being a Mormon (member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I feel like that will give you a little more insight.

A Super Short Introduction …

I’m Mariel. I’ve been running this blog for nearly 14 years. It started out as a blog all about ideas for women, but as my family grew and my mind was focusing more on ‘family,’ I decided to change the focus of the blog to exactly that… FAMILY. ‘Or so she says…’ is all about family ideas and since my religion is heavily family-focused, it only makes sense to share this with you today.

Spending time with my favorite people… my family!

What is The Book of Mormon??

The first video is a simple explanation of The Book of Mormon.

The second video is one of my very favorite testimonies of The Book of Mormon, shared by Elder Holland, an apostle of The Lord. In his video, he will be referencing the murder of The Prophet, Joseph Smith, who was called to translate the ancient scripture plates so that we could read them today (The Book of Mormon.) By denying what he knew to be true, he could have saved his life. He could have save the lives of those he loved and stopped the persecution of his family, whom he loved so much, and all of those who believed in his role. His testimony was sealed by his death.

“So it was with me. I had actually seen a light, and in the midst of that light I saw two Personages, and they did in reality speak to me; and though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true; and while they were persecuting me, reviling me, and speaking all manner of evil against me falsely for so saying, I was led to say in my heart: Why persecute me for telling the truth? I have actually seen a vision; and who am I that I can withstand God, or why does the world think to make me deny what I have actually seen? For I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would offend God, and come under condemnation.” – Joseph Smith

Where to Learn More While Waiting for Your Package…

There are lots of places you can find information about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints online. However, a lot of it conflicting. Who is telling the truth?? My suggestion is go to the source… go straight to the websites of The Church. It’s straight-forward and uninfluenced by opinions or experiences, as people are not perfect, inside or outside of the church. Nearly every question you have can be found addressed on one of them: Come Unto Christ (awesome site, geared towards those wanting to learn more) and The Church of Jesus Christ. (a site, mostly used by members of The Church, but has so many great things to learn from!)

Also, The Church has released a series of videos depicting the events in The Book of Mormon. They really bring the scriptures to life, and help you better understand what you read.

How Do I Order Again??

For this, I’m going to send you back to the beginning of the post for the most detailed information and things to make sure of, before you send your email.

How to Read the Book of Mormon Free Online

You can TOTALLY read the Book of Mormon free online or listen to Book of Mormon audio. There are a couple of great options…

The Church’s website, www.thechurchofjesuschrist.org, offers the entire book of scriptures for free to read online, as well as the Bible, Doctrine & Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price. There is also an option to listen to the scriptures on the bottom right corner of each chapter.

If you would rather listen to the scriptures on your phone, I would suggest getting the Gospel Library app. I’ve found that listening to the scriptures is a different experience than reading them. They both add to your understanding in a different way. I like doing both! On the Gospel Library app, you can also access The Church of Jesus Christ’s magazines, hymns, lesson manuals, and videos. It’s an awesome resource.

There are a couple other sites that claim to offer The Book of Mormon online, but I’ve found their sites to be glitchy or unsecured. Once again, I would just go to the source.

Please Help Spread the Word About This Offer…

You can pin this image, or the one at the top of the post. Or, share the post on any social media outlet you use. Help me offer something good online, to help combat the negative! Anything would be appreciated!

A couple last things about receiving a free Book of Mormon without missionaries …

This offer doesn’t expire, unless I say otherwise. So, for now… go ahead an email me to get your free Book of Mormon (instructions shared at the beginning of the post.)

Comments are turned off on all of my spiritual related posts. I’m about kindness and positivity and I want my readers having a good experience while they’re here. Turning off comments helps ensure that is the case.

The beautiful watercolor Christ print in the pictures is from Castel Arts.

February 1st – I Can Do Hard Things

Sometimes we have to do things that feel really hard. It might be learning something new, being brave at school, or choosing the right when it isn’t easy. Hard things can make us feel worried, but we don’t have to face them alone.

Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us and want to help us. When we pray, They listen. When we try our best, They give us strength and comfort.

In the scriptures, Enoch, David, and Esther all did hard things because they trusted God, and He helped them be brave. We can trust God too.

When something feels big or scary, we can pray, ask for help, and keep trying. God will guide us and help us feel strong inside. I know that with God’s help, we can do hard things

February 8th Primary Talk – I Can Choose To Follow Jesus

Today I want to talk about making good choices and how they help us follow God.

Heavenly Father loves us so much. He wants us to be happy. Every day, we get to choose what we will do. Even small choices matter.

When we choose to be kind, we are following God.

When we choose to tell the truth, we are following God.

When we choose to pray, read scriptures, or help someone in need, we are coming closer to Heavenly Father.

Sometimes making the right choice is hard. But when we try our best, Heavenly Father helps us. I’m thankful that Heavenly Father trusts us to make choices. And I’m grateful that He helps us every day.

February 15th – Jesus Leads Us To Heaven

Today I want to talk about how following Jesus helps us get to heaven.

Jesus showed us the perfect way to live. He was kind, loving, and always chose the right. When we try to be like Him, we come closer to Heavenly Father.

We follow Jesus when we pray, read scriptures, go to church, and help others. We follow Him when we forgive, share, and choose to be kind even when it’s hard. Every good choice brings us a little closer to Heaven.

Jesus promised that if we follow Him and make sacred covenants, He will guide us and help us return to Heavenly Father someday.

I like the Primary song, “I Will Walk With Jesus” and I know that when we walk with Him, he will lead us home.

February 22nd Primary Talk – God Hears Our Prayers

Heavenly Father loves us, and He always listens when we pray. Even when we feel small or unsure, He hears every word and thought in our hearts.

The Bible teaches us this. When Daniel prayed, even though he was in a lion’s den, God heard him and kept him safe. When Hannah prayed for a baby, God heard her and blessed her with Samuel. When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, Heavenly Father heard Him too.

These stories remind us that God listens to everyone—children, grown‑ups, prophets, and even His Son.

When we pray, we can feel peace and comfort because the Holy Ghost helps us know that God is near. He may not answer right away, but He always hears us and helps us in the best way.

I’m thankful that we can pray anytime and anywhere, and that Heavenly Father is always listening.

I Am A Child Of God: Primary Talk January 11

I know that I am a child of God. That means Heavenly Father loves me very much. He knows my name and cares about me.

“If the Lord were speaking to you directly,” President Russell M. Nelson taught, “the first thing He would make sure you understand is your true identity”

When I remember that I am a child of God, it helps me make good choices. I want to be kind, honest, and helpful because I want to be like Him.

Knowing I am a child of God also helps me when I feel sad or scared. I know I am never alone, and Heavenly Father will help me when I pray.

I am thankful to know that I am a child of God, and I love Him.

We Look Like Our Father: Primary Talk January 18

Has anyone ever told you that you look like your mom or dad or your brothers and sisters? Families look alike!

Did you know that Heavenly Father created us in His image. That means that we look like Him! Our bodies are a gift from Him, and they are very special.

Because our bodies are sacred, we should take care of them. We can exercise, get good rest, eat healthy foods, and talk about ourselves in a positive way!

When I remember that my body is created in the image of God, it helps me feel thankful and confident. I know Heavenly Father loves me just the way He made me.

We Can Pray: Primary Talk January 25

When Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden they could talk to God. He walked with them and talked with them. When they had to leave the Garden, they could no longer be with God.

They missed talking to their Father in Heaven! So, they learned how to pray. They prayed in the name of Jesus Christ.

When they prayed, they were able to feel close to God again. We can connect with Heavenly Father when we pray too! He is there to listen to our prayers.

I am grateful I can talk to Heavenly Father through prayer. He loves me and I know he loves you too. When we pray, we can feel close to Him.

There is a specific kind of silence that settles over a home when a child decides to walk away from the faith of their upbringing – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It isn’t the peaceful silence of a clean house or a sleeping toddler. It’s a heavy, echoing silence that lives in the empty spot on the church pew or the noticeable absence from family prayer.

I vividly remember the pain from hearing, “I don’t really care about getting married in the temple,” or the “I’m glad I was brought up a member, but I don’t really see The Church being a part of my life” kind of comments. It’s HARD, right?! I get it. As a mother of 7 children, ranging from the age of nine to the independent world of young marriage, I have learned that our hearts have a way of expanding to hold both immense joy and piercing grief at the exact same time. If you are reading this today with a lump in your throat because your child is currently “wandering in strange roads,” I want you to know first and foremost: you are not failing, and you are not alone.

Wayward Children: A Latter-day Saint Mother’s Covenant Hope

In our culture within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we talk a lot about the “ideal.” We celebrate the missions, the temple weddings, and the steady testimonies. These are beautiful things, worthy of celebration. But sometimes, we can inadvertently create a space where parents of wandering children feel they have to hide their heartbreak. We start to wonder if our “forever family” has a broken link, and worse, we wonder if it’s our fault.

Today, I want to peel back the layers of that shame and look at what the scriptures actually say—and what they don’t say—about covenant-keeping parents and the children they love.

Why LDS Parents Struggle with Guilt When a Child Leaves the Church

When a child chooses a different path, the adversary’s first move isn’t usually to attack the child; it’s to attack the parent’s peace. We start spiraling in shame, if we are not careful. We re-watch the home movies of our lives in our minds, looking for the exact moment we messed up. Maybe we weren’t consistent enough with family prayer. Maybe we were too strict. Maybe we weren’t strict enough. Maybe that one argument ten years ago was the tipping point.

We tend to interpret our child’s agency as a direct reflection of our parental worth. But if we look at the very beginning of the story of “wandering,” we see a different pattern. Heavenly Father is the only perfect parent to ever exist. He did everything right. He provided the perfect environment, the perfect instruction, and the perfect love. Yet, in the premortal world, one-third of His children chose to leave.

If a perfect God can have children who exercise their agency to walk away, why do we expect ourselves to be more successful than He was? Agency is not a flaw in the plan; it is the heart of the plan. Your child’s choice to wander is an exercise of the very gift God fought to give them. It is a testament to their identity as an individual, not a final report card on your motherhood.

Scriptural Promises for Parents of Wayward Children: The “Nevertheless” Hope

There is a verse in The Book of Mormon that has become a lifeline for me. It was written by Jacob, a man who knew a thing or two about family drama. He watched his older brothers, Laman and Lemuel, rebel against their father and cause deep divisions that lasted for generations. He saw the pain it caused his parents, Sariah and Lehi.

In 2 Nephi 10:2, Jacob writes something that feels like a warm hand on a trembling shoulder. He says, “For behold, the promises which we have obtained are promises unto us according to the flesh; wherefore, as it hath been shown unto me that many of our children shall perish in the flesh because of unbelief, nevertheless, God will be merciful unto many; and our children shall be restored, that they may come to that which will give them the true knowledge of their Redeemer.”

Did you catch that word? Nevertheless?? Jacob doesn’t pretend that unbelief isn’t happening. He doesn’t say, “Don’t worry, they’ll all be active by next Christmas.” He acknowledges the “perishing” and the “unbelief.” He validates the pain. But then he pivots. He reminds us that God’s mercy is not a finite resource that runs out when a child becomes stubborn.

The promise of “restoration” in this verse is a covenant promise. It suggests that because of the parents’ faithfulness to their covenants, the Lord keeps a special, watchful eye on the children. He doesn’t violate their agency, but He certainly “hedges up their way” with opportunities to remember who they are.

There are many wonderful faith-focused scriptures that have helped me, as a mother, as I navigate raising children in this fallen world. Here are a handful more:

How Social Science and Research Support the Hope for “Prodigal” Children

While we rely on the Spirit for comfort, it is incredibly validating to see that secular research often mirrors these spiritual truths. If you feel like your influence has vanished the moment your child stopped attending church, the data suggests otherwise.

The Bengtson Study: Spiritual DNA and the Long Game

Sociologist Vern Bengtson conducted a landmark 35-year study called Families and Faith. He followed over 350 families across multiple generations to see how religion was passed down. His findings were a “nevertheless” moment for parents. Bengtson found that for high-commitment groups, specifically including Latter-day Saint families, the intergenerational transmission of faith is remarkably high.

But here is the part you need to highlight: the study found that many children who “drifted” in their late teens and twenties often returned to their parents’ faith or core values in their thirties and forties. This suggests that the “Spiritual DNA” you provided isn’t destroyed; it often goes dormant during a season of self-discovery. You are playing the long game, and the data says the odds are more in your favor than the current “empty chair” suggests.

The “Relational Warmth” Factor

Data from the National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR) shows that the single greatest predictor of a child maintaining or returning to their faith isn’t how many seminary classes they took, but the quality of the relationship they have with their parents.

Children who feel they can talk to their parents about their doubts, mistakes, and disagreements without being “shamed” or “shut down” are significantly more likely to return to the fold. This aligns perfectly with the gospel principle of unconditional love. By focusing on the relationship rather than the “compliance,” you are actually doing the most effective “missionary work” possible for your child’s soul.

This is something I can vouch for. I have a son who fell away, but has since come back. He speaks of our close relationship during that time: that he felt our love and desire to have him be an active part of the family, despite his faith concerns. It gave him room to struggle and the humility to come back when he was ready.

How Covenant Promises and Generational Mercy Protect Our Families

For those of us who have made sacred covenants in the temple, we often wonder what those promises mean for our children who aren’t currently keeping theirs. While we know that everyone must eventually choose for themselves, the scriptures are overflowing with the idea of “generational mercy.”

In Exodus and Deuteronomy, the Lord speaks of showing mercy unto “thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.” In Psalm 103, we are told that the mercy of the Lord is from “everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.“

Think about that phrase: unto children’s children. This suggests that your faithfulness creates a spiritual canopy that extends over your descendants. You are building a reservoir of grace that your children can draw from, even if they aren’t currently contributing to it themselves. When you keep your covenants, you are inviting God to work on your family line in powerful, persistent ways. And, HE WILL.

The Power of a Parent’s Prayers for Wayward Children

Perhaps the most famous story of a wayward child in our scripture is that of Alma the Younger. He wasn’t just “inactive”; he was actively trying to destroy the Church. He was the “worst-case scenario” parent’s nightmare.

And then, an angel appeared.

What is fascinating is why the angel appeared. The angel didn’t say, “Alma, you’re so special I had to come down here.” Instead, the angel said, “The Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is thy father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee… and for this purpose have I come to convince thee of the power and authority of God.” (Mosiah 27:14).

I have spent many hours reflecting on that verse. It tells me that my prayers and efforts to keep my covenants aren’t just “feel-good” exercises. They are actual, spiritual forces that can move the hand of Heaven to intervene in a child’s life.

Does this mean an angel will appear to every wayward child? Probably not in a literal, flaming-sword kind of way. But it does mean that God responds to a parent’s faith by sending “angels” in other forms. Maybe it’s a specific friend who enters their life at just the right time. Maybe it’s a song they hear on the radio that triggers a childhood memory. Maybe it’s a moment of quiet reflection during a difficult trial that softens the soil of their heart.

One of my favorite talks on this subject is by Sister Wendy Nelson, called “My Soul Delighteth in the Covenants of The Lord,” where she speaks of our ability, as covenant makers and keepers, to call upon angels to help us in our lives. And, not just ANY angels… she invites us to ask for specific angels. I remember saying that very prayer, asking God to send my sweet best friend, Katie, who passed away at age 19, to look after my own 19 year old daughter. It was a little awkward at first, like, “am I really allowed to do this??” But, I felt the confirmation, deep inside, that not only was it okay, it was GOOD and God would honor my request.

When Children Stop Listening: Trusting the Lord as the Master Teacher

One of the most common sources of anxiety for parents is the feeling that we’ve lost our influence. When a child stops coming to us for advice, or worse, stops listening when we share our testimony, we panic. We feel like the only bridge to their salvation has been washed away.

But Isaiah 54:13 offers a promise that should calm our nervous systems: “And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children.”

This is a profound shift in perspective. If your child will not be taught by you right now, that doesn’t mean they aren’t being taught. The Lord has a curriculum for your child that you cannot see. He is a master teacher who knows exactly how to reach a stubborn heart.

He teaches through:

The natural consequences of life choices.

Those empty feelings that come from seeking happiness in “broken cisterns.”

The beauty of the world that whispers of a Creator.

The unexpected kindness of strangers.

The “still, small voice” of The Holy Ghost

I remember times where I had just had a “great” talk with my wandering child. I would quickly pray and beg God to “make a move,” because I had JUST had a bold conversation with my child, and “now” would be an ideal time. Wouldn’t ya know it, God doesn’t always like my ideas. And, good thing He doesn’t, because oftentimes, when I think I’m right, I find out God knows WAY better. He knew there was an even better moment coming… a moment where His message and love would be felt more distinctly. And, it worked! It worked that way with my son and now I’m patiently waiting for that same moment for my daughter.

(Speaking of being patient, this talk was HUGE for me. It really opened my eyes to my own ineffectiveness and impatience, and my need to wait on The Lord. It’s called The Honest Truth About Our Messy Families by Joseph Grenny.)

Your job is to be the parent—to love, to welcome, to feed, and to listen. God’s job is to be the Teacher and the Savior. When we try to take over His job, we usually just end up stressed and push our children further away. When we trust Him to do His work, we find the “great peace” that Isaiah promised.

Redefining “Success” in Parenting When a Child Leaves the Faith

We need to be very careful about how we define a “successful” parent. If we define success as having children who are all perfectly active and “temple-worthy” at all times, then many of the greatest prophets in history were failures.

Lehi was a success, even though Laman and Lemuel rebelled. Adam and Eve were successes, even though Cain chose a dark path. King Mosiah was a success, even though his sons were wayward for many years. I could go on and on…

Success in parenting is not about the outcome; it is about the offering. It is about the daily, consistent effort to love as God loves. It is about keeping our own covenants, even when it’s hard. It is about keeping the door to our hearts—and our homes—wide open.

If you have loved your child, prayed for them, and tried to show them the light of the gospel, you have succeeded. The rest of the story is still being written, and it is being co-authored by your child and their Savior.

Practical Advice for Loving Your Wayward Child Without Losing Your Peace

So, what do we do in the meantime? How do we live in the “waiting room” of faith without losing our minds?

First, we have to learn to separate our child’s worth from their current beliefs. Your child is not a “project” to be fixed; they are a soul to be loved. When we see them only through the lens of their “inactivity,” they feel it. It creates a barrier of judgment. Try to see them as God sees them—not as a “wayward child,” but as a beloved son or daughter who is currently learning some very difficult lessons in the school of mortality. Take note of their good qualities, compliment them. Tell them reasons you are proud of them. Have FUN with them. Don’t live in a gloomy space and become unpleasant to be around. Show interest in their lives, outside of the church. How is their job going? Tell them something funny that happened during your day. Take them to lunch and keep the conversation light. Help them feel your sincere love and LIKE for them, despite their faith struggles.

Second, keep your own light bright. Sometimes, in our grief over a child, we let our own spiritual habits slide. We stop feeling the joy of the gospel because we are so focused on their absence. But your child needs you to be a lighthouse, not a fellow traveler in the dark. Keep your covenants. Go to the temple. Find joy in your service. Show them that the gospel makes you a happier, more loving, and more peaceful person. That is the most powerful testimony you can ever give. Find REST in knowing that God will step in when the time is right. Keep your faith strong!

Find ways to appreciate the challenges your child brings into your life and the personal growth you are seeing because of those challenges. A positive focus will serve you greatly. You will feel greater peace and your mind will be in a better place to receive inspiration. As a bonus, your child will sense your calm faith and feel your love in a more true way.

Third, pray for “proxies.” Pray that the Lord will send people into your child’s life who can say the things you can’t, and who can be heard in ways you aren’t. Often, a child needs to hear the truth from a peer, a mentor, or even a stranger before they can hear it again from a parent. Of course, that includes The Holy Ghost and angels, that we are encouraged to invite into our lives for help.

God Loves Your Child More Than You Do

If there is one thing I want you to take away from this, it’s this: God loves your child more than you do.

That feels impossible, doesn’t it? We feel like our love is the ultimate force. But our love is a drop in the ocean compared to the love of the One who bled in Gethsemane for them. He knows why they are struggling. He knows the wounds that haven’t healed, the questions that haven’t been answered, and the pressures they are facing.

He is not pacing the floors of Heaven, wringing His hands in frustration. He is the Good Shepherd. He is specialized in finding the one who is lost. And because of your covenants, He has a “claim” on your family that He will not easily let go.

Your story is not over. Your family is not “ruined.” You are in the middle of a very long, very complex chapter, but the Author of our faith knows how to write a beautiful ending.

Hold to the nevertheless. Keep your feet on the covenant path and your arms open wide. God is still working in the quiet, in the dark, and in the “far country” where your child may be wandering. He is the God of the return. He is the God of the restoration. And He is very, very good at bringing His children home.

The Holy Ghost Helps Us Understand The Scriptures: December 7 Primary Talk

Today I want to talk about how the Holy Ghost can help us understand the scriptures.

The scriptures are full of wonderful teachings. But sometimes, we may not always understand what we read, even though we try our best. That’s where the Holy Ghost comes in!

In John 14:26, Jesus said, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things.” This means that the Holy Ghost will help us learn and remember all the good things we need to know from the scriptures.

So, whenever we open our scriptures, let’s pray and ask the Holy Ghost to help us understand. The more we listen to Him, the better we can learn and follow the teachings of Jesus.

I know that when we listen to the Holy Ghost, we can understand the scriptures more clearly and feel closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus.

Prophets Guide Us To God: Primary Talk December 14

Heavenly Father loves us very much. He wants us to know what is right and how to follow Him. One way He shows His love is by giving us prophets.

Prophets teach us what Heavenly Father wants us to do. They help us understand His commandments and remind us to follow Jesus Christ. When we listen to the prophet, we are really listening to God’s will for us.

Just like in the scriptures, when people followed prophets like Moses or Nephi, they were blessed. Today, if we follow our prophet, Dallin H. Oaks, we can be blessed too.

I am thankful that we have a living prophet to guide us. I know that when I listen to him, I am learning what Heavenly Father wants me to do.

Creating Love At Home: Primary Talk December 21

When we follow Jesus and try to live the way He taught, our homes can feel warm, peaceful, and happy. Jesus showed us how to be kind, how to forgive, and how to love one another. When we do those things at home—like helping our family, speaking kindly, and being quick to say “I’m sorry”—the Spirit can be with us.

Jesus said, “Love one another; as I have loved you.” When we follow that teaching, we bring His light into our homes.

Even small choices like sharing, obeying our parents, or praying together invite happiness.

I know that when we follow Jesus Christ, we can feel more peace and love at home. I’m grateful for His example and His teachings that help us be more like Him.

Jesus Is The Light Of The World: Primary Talk December 28

Jesus Christ said, “I am the light of the world.” That means He shows us the way to go, just like a light helps us see in the dark. When we learn about Jesus and try to follow Him, we feel His light in our lives.

Jesus’s light feels warm, happy, and peaceful. We feel it when we pray, when we read the scriptures, when we sing Primary songs, and when we choose the right. His light helps us not feel afraid and reminds us that we are never alone.

I love feeling Jesus’s light because it helps me know what is right and helps me feel close to Him. When we follow Jesus, His light can shine in us and help us share His love with others.

I am grateful that Jesus is the Light of the World.

I was recently released as my ward’s Relief Society president. Looking back, I feel like one of our greatest successes, as a presidency, was following God’s inspiration to revamp our service committee to help them become more effective. This underutilized committee went from only managing meal deliveries and funerals to proactively blessing the whole neighborhood with light and love. They provided a backup to ministering companionships and eased the burden on our Relief Society presidency. This committee was SO wonderful that I’ve chosen to do a Relief Society leadership training for all the wards in our stake on the blessing of effective Relief Society committees, both Service and Activities. (Side note: I’m currently serving as the Stake Relief Society President.)

As I prepare for this upcoming leadership training, I figured I might as well share the information and handouts online, so other RS presidencies can ponder on this idea too. Maybe it’s something that can bless your own ward!

The Most Effective Relief Society Service Committee

Here’s the gist of it: We called a service activity coordinator to be the lead of our new service committee. Together we worked with the new lead to fill her committee with Relief Society sisters. We asked that she meet regularly with her committee to discuss ways to show kindness to those in the neighborhood and ward who could use it. It could be someone who appeared to be sad or withdrawn at church, maybe the mother of a missionary who just left, or the Primary Presidency who just knocked-out a wonderful and time-consuming Primary program. It could be for a widow, or a sister who lost one of her parents or even a pet. It could even be for someone who seems like they have it all together and is doing great – maybe they’ve been forgotten as well. Basically the Committee was to keep their eyes, ears, and heart open to the little promptings of the Spirit pointing them to those who needed love.

At their meetings they were to discuss who was on their mind and also utilize the list of suggestions from the Relief Society presidency that would come to them after their own presidency meetings. And then they would make a plan. Maybe two of the committee members would go do a home visit with the sister. Maybe a couple other committee members would knock on the door of somebody else. Or, they might invite their chosen person to go for a walk or to lunch or even just drop off a simple gift at the door. There are so many ways that they could serve those who were on their minds.

And of course the service committee would still take care of all funerals and meal delivery needs. But, having this extra love assignment added to their list of responsibilities has been magical for our neighborhood.

We also asked that the committee plan two service projects for the Relief Society (and anyone else that wanted to attend) per year. Although we also had an activity committee who would plan activities, we found that most of them didn’t involve service (though still fun and spiritual.) So, by asking the service committee to head up the service activities, we were guaranteed to at least get two great service projects per year. Plus, they would tack on little service additions to any activities that the activity committee planned, such as bringing cans of food or gifts to donate to a special cause.

Once a quarter the service committee coordinator would send the Relief Society presidency a text report of all of the little acts of service that they had done. As a presidency, it was one of our very favorite things to read through that list and know that even more love was being spread and even more hearts were being reached. It’s been an amazing supplement to the ministering program and has eased the burden of the presidency. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this!

A few other notes on this special ward service calling:

As a fun bonus we were even able to call women to the service committee who don’t attend church. You know those people that love to serve but are not ready for church? They’re PERFECT for this calling! You know the people that show up to the neighborhood cleanups but don’t come to church? Call them too! It’s a wonderful calling because it’s hard not to feel the Spirit when you are serving somebody else.

We asked our service committee lead to really impress upon her committee members that this calling as a committee member was not an unimportant calling. When fulfilled, wonderful and even amazing things will happen. The regular meetings helped to keep committee members engaged and involved in the return-and-report principle.

The acts of service did not need to be reserved for the sisters of the ward and women of the neighborhood. We invited them to reach out to all people in our neighborhood, men and children included, if they had insight on special needs for them as well.

We found this committee very helpful as a backup to ministers. For example, if a minister was caring for one of her sisters who had been injured but didn’t feel like she had the time or means to give all the care needed, we could invite our service committee to help out as a backup. And, if the service committee needed more help beyond what they could offer, we would start reaching out to our other Relief Society sisters and neighbors.

Send out birthday cards or texts to the sisters in the ward.

Be the welcoming committee in the Relief Society room on Sundays.

Find volunteers for the cannery, temple cleaning, and branch assignments when needed.

I probably use my slow cooker at least twice a week, even more now that my days just got a lot busier!

The Easiest Santa Fe Chicken Soup (Dump & Go Crockpot Recipe)

One of our family’s favorite winter recipes is this easy slow cooker Santa Fe Chicken Soup recipe. Not only is it packed with flavor but it’s also pretty frugal to make too which is always a plus in my book! I love easy, delicious, crowd pleasing recipes that uses simple ingredients, many of which I usually always have on hand in my pantry, freezer or refrigerator. Best of all, even though it’s packed with lots of protein from the chicken and black beans, and is warm and comforting for a cold winter’s night, it’s light and refreshing too.

Why This Crockpot Soup Recipe Works

True “Dump & Go” Meal: No browning meat or chopping vegetables required. Just open cans, add chicken, and cook.

Pantry Friendly: You likely have 90% of these ingredients in your kitchen right now.

Healthy & High Protein: It’s naturally gluten-free and packed with lean chicken breast and fiber-rich black beans.

Freezer Friendly: This soup freezes beautifully, making it perfect for meal prep lunches.

Ingredients and Substitutions

One of the best things about this Santa Fe Chicken Soup is how flexible it is. Here is what you need and how you can swap things out:

The Chicken: I use boneless skinless chicken breasts, but you can also use chicken thighs for a richer, darker meat flavor.

The Broth: Use a carton of chicken broth or stock. If you are watching your sodium, opt for a low-sodium variety since the canned beans and tomatoes add salt.

The Spices: This recipe uses a custom blend of cumin, garlic salt, onion powder, and chili powder. Pro Tip: In a pinch, you can swap the individual spices for a packet of taco seasoning or ranch dressing mix!

Vegetables: We use black beans, diced tomatoes, and Rotel. You can easily add frozen corn, diced bell peppers, or onions if you have extra time to chop.

Want a Creamy Santa Fe Chicken Soup? If you prefer an indulgent, creamy texture, simply stir in 4oz of softened cream cheese or a cup of sour cream during the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Want some delicious toppings on your soup? Try some of these fun toppings:

Shredded cheese

Guacamole or avocado pieces

Sour cream

Chopped tomatoes

Tortilla chips or strips

How to Make Santa Fe Chicken in a Crockpot

Combine: Place the chicken breasts, rinsed black beans, tomatoes (undrained), Rotel, spices, and broth into the slow cooker. Give it a quick stir.

Cook: Cover and cook on Low for 6-8 hours or High for 3-4 hours.

Shred: Remove the chicken breasts, shred them with two forks, and return the meat to the pot.

Finish: Stir in the fresh lime juice and chopped cilantro right before serving to wake up the flavors.

Santa Fe Chicken Soup is light yet filling and super comforting on nights when the temperature is cold. I like to make a big batch in the slow cooker and then freeze the leftovers (if there are any) in individual serving dishes for easy lunches. I hope you enjoy!
