Take a look at some of the world's most fabulous fountains and let your mind flow with the way of the water.

The Unisphere - Queens, New York City, USA

It's not really a
fountain that's in the spotlight here, but rather the giant steel
representation of the Globe that sits within the pool in
Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York. The Unisphere was
constructed as the symbol of the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair,
whose theme was "Peace Through Understanding", and
represented the idea of global peace and interdependence. The
construction is 140 ft (50 m) high, 120 ft (37 m) in diameter and
weighs 900,000 pounds (408 tons).

The Magic Fountain of Montjuic – Barcelona, Spain

Located at the head of Avenida Maria Cristina in the Montjuïc neighborhood of Barcelona, the Magic Fountain delights visitors with a fabulous display of light and water acrobatics. Multicolored plumes dance in three concentric circles to the rhythm of music ranging from The Godfather theme to a Spanish zarzuela. The fountain counts as many as 3,620 water jets and pumps 2,600 litres of water every second. What a show!

Vaillancourt Fountain - San Francisco, USA

Ever since its debut
in 1971, the Vaillancourt Fountain has been stirring controversies,
mostly because of its awkward concrete limbs that people have called
“"howling obscenity" and "pestiferous eyesore"
among other epithets. Now that its design is heavily outdated and the
city refuses to splash the annual $250,000 on electricity costs to
pump 30,000 gallons of water through the monstrous tubes, the
fountain has become a night refuge for the homeless and is hated
stronger than ever. Pland have been developed to remove the much
despised “attraction”, but Armand Vaillancourt, a French
Canadian artist who sculpted the fountain, says he's going to fight
like a devil to preserve his work.

Giant Wild Goose Fountain - Xi'an, China

Set against the
backdrop of the majestic Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the music fountain
ranks as the largest of its kind in Asia and is probably the most
spectacular free attraction in Xian. Distributed over an area of 16.8
ha, the water jets shoot irregular streams to the rhythm of music and
make for a particularly thrilling display at night, when the fountain
is graciously illuminated by LED lights. With such
a marvelous entourage, the spirit of
the glorious Tang Dynasty can truly be felt, whether you are a
Buddhist pilgrim or a random visitor.

King Fahd’s Fountain - Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Shooting 1023ft (312m) up in the air at a speed of 233 miles (375 km)
per hour, King Fahd's donation to the city is the world's tallest
fountain and one that truly takes the breath away. It is located off the
coast of Jeddah in the Red Sea and consists of a single massive plume
of water that, on a calm day, reaches higher than the Eiffel Tower.

Dubai Fountain - Dubai, UAE

The largest, the tallest, the wealthiest – Dubai is very much into record-breaking, ans so it is with the mind-boggling fountain set on the 30-acre manmade Burj Khalifa Lake, at the center of the Downtown Dubai development. Over 6,600 incandescent lights and 25 color projectors generate a mesmerizing visual spectrum of over 1,000 abstract compositions, making it the brightest spot in the Middle East, and quite possibly in the entire world. The fountain is 275 m (902 ft) long and sends water 150 m (490 ft) into the air, accompanied by a wide range of tunes, from classical to contemporary Arabic and world music.

Oval Fountain - Tivoli, Italy

The astonishing UNESCO-protected garden of Tivoli hides a bewildering 500 fountains but one deserves particular attention. Cascades from an egg-shaped basin into a large pool backdropped by a rustic nymphaeum, Fontana dell'Ovato is a quintessence of Italian classiness and taste in architectural undertakings. Visitors may walk behind the semi-circular wall of water through a shaded arcade thickly overgrown with vine and peopled with marble nymphas. No wonder the place is the most popular destination for day trip from Rome.

Moonlight Rainbow Fountain - Seoul, South Korea

With nearly 10,000 dynamic LED nozzles running along both sides of the 1,140m long Banpo
Bridge, the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain is the longest of its kind
and one that adds a romantic quality to the otherwise hectic and
business-soaked city. When night falls, the bridge turns into a
stage for a riveting performance of water, light, music and color.

Trevi Fountain – Rome, Italy

In the maze of narrow, meandering streets, Rome hides a sparkling jewel held to be a triumphant example of Baroque finesse and the natural artistry of water - one of the world's most stunning fountains and a work of art in one. Trevi is not just a cold piece of marble glued to the facade of the Palazzo Poli. The play of light, shade and wind makes it move in a mesmerizing rhythm that the hypnotized public yields to subconsciously. Legend has it you will return to Rome if you throw a coin into the water, which results in an estimated 3,000 euros tossed into the fountain each day.

Crown Fountain - Chicago, USA

A major tourist magnet and a vital addition to the city's world-renowned public art collection, Jaume Plensa's Crown Fountain is a unique tribute to the people of Chicago first and foremost. Located centrally in downtown Chicago's Millennium Park, two 50-foot glass block towers sequined with light emitting diodes project video images of the citizens who, well, spit out water to the utmost delight of visiting kids. Though the beginning were tough (many feared the artwork's size would violate the aesthetic feel of the park), the fountain has found its way into the city's popular culture and is now a pride and joy of most Chicagoans.

The Fountain of Wealth – Suntec City, Singapore

Right at the heart of the commercial complex of Suntec City, the world's largest fountain epitomizes all that's true of Sinagpore: wealth, grandiosity and harmony. The design iderived from the Hindu mandala, which signifies the universe and symbolizes unity of all who dwell in the Lion City. Legend has it if you walk around the Fountain’s central base with your hand immersed in the water and make a wish, it will soon come true. Doubtful, but it doesn't hurt to try...

Bellagio Fountains – Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

In the kitsch realm
of Las Vegas, the Bellagio Fountain Show may actually be the only
spiritual experience to be had... if we don't count a staggering win
at the hotel's casino, but that's improbable anyway. The dancing
waters that come to life on an 8-acre lake have become the city's
major attraction that never fails to mesmerize spectators gathering
around the pool every half an hour. The musical background tends to
be a little too pompous, but hey, it's Las Vegas.

People head out on the town, champagne flows, music blasts from every corner and awe-inspiring firework displays light up the skies. Here's where the turn of the year gets a really special entourage.

Sydney, Australia

Why Sydney? Thanks to its location, it is among the first major cities to welcome the new year. How cool is that? The harbor attracts more than 1.5 million revelers with numerous waterfront events, including traditional rituals by the indigenous people and a spectacular Harbour of Lights Parade with more than 50 illuminated cruise boats circuiting the harbor all night. If you want to melt with the crowd lege artis, remember the wardrobe color of choice is black. If you don't feel like being part of the collective New Year frenzy, though, lay down a blanket at North Head of Sydney Harbour National Park, a relatively tranquil vantage point for gazing at the phenomenal pyrotechnic displays of over 80,000 fireworks traditionally set off from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Scots do know how to party, and it is quite obviously the capital with the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle that attracts the greatest crowds. The four-day Hogmaney celebrations starting on December 29th with the torchlight parade last well until January 1st or even 2nd and feature anything from live music, outdoor bar events, massive street parties, concerts in the Gardens and folk dancing lessons at the Keilidh. When the clock strikes twelve, be prepared for deafening bursts of fireworks and the communal singing of Auld Lang Syne followed by a traditional kissathon in which thousands are expected to exchange friendly kisses.

Venice, Italy

Venice. By luca_76

Venice is magical all year round and the splendor culminates for La Festa di San Silvestro, when the fireworks lit up the sky, music blasts from St. Mark's Square and wild partying lasts until the crack of dawn. The city offers a compelling blend of romantic charm and the glitz of high society events, including the Golden Opera New Year's Eve performance and the New Year's concert at La Fenice Theater.

Tradition wise, try a typical lentil dish that symbolizes good fortune, take a dip at the Lido Beach if you dare, share a communal kiss at the stroke of midnight, and watch your head as some Venetians still practice an old custom of throwing useless things out their windows, which is to signify purification before the New year is entered. The turn of the year kick-starts a series of joyous events, and if you're still around on the 6th of January, make sure you catch a glimpse of the Befana races, when local men clad in women's clothes race boats along the Grand Canal.

As a former hippie paradise and a realm of swaying palms, snow-white sands and sparkling waters, Goa seems to be the perfect place to start your new year with a bang. Visitors go gaga over psychedelic trance parties in the open air while locals stick to their long-established traditions and feast in the little villages scattered all over the island. Whatever you do, your New Year stay in Goa is going to be marked with triple “f”: foof, fun and feni (a type of fiery liquor made from either coconut or the juice of the cashew apple).

Barcelona, Spain

With the reputation of the most alluring Spanish party hub, Barcelona certainly doesn't slow down for Noche Vieja. Las Ramblas, Plaça Catalunya and the Plaça Reial fill up with thousands of merrymakers who dance, sing, bar hop and wait for Spaniards' beloved New Year's Eve tradition. When the clock strikes midnight, everyone eats one grape per chime, with each grape signifying good luck for the twelve months of the upcoming year. Then the party really gets into full swing. From rock to salsa and flamenco, whatever music you fancy, you'll find a spot for yourself in Barcelona. Yet if indoor events are not your thing, head over to the beach and gaze at star or crawl from bar to bar in the Olympic Port. If you manage to greet the morning at the waterfront, don't miss an almost traditional breakfast of hot chocolate and churros.

Bangkok, Thailand

Whether you fancy raving clubs with renowned DJ's spinning their stuff, private parties or collective outdoor countdowns and firework extravaganza, Bangkok doesn't fall short of world-class attractions on New Year's Eve. The major countdown takes place in front of Central World Square, with several hundred thousand people greeting the New Year, dazzled with fabulous light shows and accompanied by live on-stage performances by popular local artists.

If outdoor gatherings don't appeal to you, go a little more intimate and splash out on a candle-lit dinner at one of the riverside hotel restaurants or posh rooftop venues. You'll get gourmet food, privacy and some of the best views of the firework displays. If you're on a tight budget and prefer a more dynamic locale, dance the night away in one of the clubs along the Khao San Road, but of course, there are hundreds of other venues around the city. This way or the other, you're not going to be bored in Bangkok at this time of year.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Of course nothing
compares to Carnival parades, but 2.5 million folks gathering on
brightly illuminated Copacabana know how to turn Rio into a world's
greatest New Year's Eve party under the open sky. The celebrations
fall smack in the middle of the summer season in Brazil, which boils
down to skimpy outfits, amazingly shaped bodies, high temperatures
and sizzling beach life. On that special night, stages are set
along the beach with live music shows and the stroke of midnight sets
off a spectacular fireworks display launched from boats anchored in a
safe distance from the beach.

If you want to stick to Cariocas'
tradition, wear white to symbolically undergo a spiritual renewal and
leave your problems behind. As part of an offering to Yemanja, the
deity of the seas, a lot of people throw flowers into the water or
buy specially prepared miniature beauty kits and put it on the surf
in a little wooden boat. Most of all, forget designer clothes and
open shoes. You wouldn't want your Gucci dress sprinkled with
champagne and your feet hurt with broken glass.

The list wouldn't be complete without the
all-time classic and the largest New Year's Eve celebration in the
United States – the party on Times Square. A million of revelers
flock to New York City's most dazzling district to watch the famous
ball drop from One Times Square skyscraper
and be showered with a ton of confetti released once the ball touches
the floor. Star-studded musical performances, balloons, spectacular
pyrotechnic displays and thousands of parties going on in the entire
city – New York knows how to make things right at the turn of the
year.

______________________________________________________________________________

So where are you partying this year?

Barbados, Maldives and Morocco have been on the standard list for a
while now. Well, there's no accounting for tastes, they say. But if
you're dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones you used
to know, ”where
the treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in
the snow”, consider the following cities.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague's Old
Town is fabulous at any time of year, but Christmas transforms it
into an unearthly performance of light, colors and scents. Every year
the Staroměstské náměstí
(Central Square) turns
into a bustling stage for hand-made puppets, wooden toys, children
dancing in traditional costumes and visitors who eagerly become part
of this magical performance. Whatever the weather, the markets
throughout the Old Town are always open, crowded and buzzing with energy. But
it's more about a special a atmosphere than pure shopping. A shot of
Becherovka
(traditional spicy liquor), a bite of Trdelník
(cinnamon sugar pastry) and you're all set for one of the best
Christmas experiences one can imagine.

Quebec City, Canada

Christmas
in Quebec City means home cooking, traditions passed on from
generation to generation, and a lot of merrymaking. Plus it's so
unbelievably beautiful. Narrow streets lined with tiny, sparkling
firs, buildings dusted with snow, music and live street theater exude
Old World charm captured in a winter fairy tale. At the famous Marche
de Noel (Christmas
market), both recreational and shopping conscious visitors will
find a myriad of treats for themselves, from hand-crafted toys,
hand-knitted winter accessories and ceramics to maple products,
liquors and traditional baked goods.

Vienna, Austria

If there's one city in Europe that
combines sophisticated elegance with cozy warmth, it must be Vienna
during Christmas time. On the one hand, there's the splendid
Schönbrunn
Palace, lavish City Hall building and numerous classical
concerts to give the holiday some pathos, and on the other, there's
the reputation for one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, with
beautifully decorated wooden stalls lining market squares,
hand-crafted gifts, impossibly good apfel strudel, cheer-inducing
Glühwein, and a lot of
singalong fun.

truly magical Christmas:
heaps of snow, Christmas
trees decorated with sparkling lights, reindeer walking past your
window, Christmas
carols, nativity scenes, and the outstanding beauty of Lapland, with
the awe-inducing Aurora Borealis to lit your way to the manger. It's
exactly what you remember from the fireside tales told in your
childhood days. And hey, that's where Santa has his residence. Christmas in the Arctic Circle? You bet!

Celebrate Christmas in Cologne, where the extravaganza of culture, gastronomy, traditions and history flares up every December, backdropped by the mighty cathedral, the Kölner Dom. Streets are flooded with lights, music, puppet theaters and holiday cheer, with the magic of Christmas best captured in the legendary Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market). After all, what’s Christmas without goodies? Stuff on traditional sweet delicacies and wash them down with aromatic mulled wine to warm your frostbitten limbs. Then watch artisans at work, take a ride on the merry-go-round and go skating on Heumarkt. Great fun guaranteed. 2 million visitors a year cannot be wrong.

York is much more than just holiday shopping spree
and strolls in the blizzard. The city is amazing in itself at any
given time of year, but this festive season is all about iconic
sights and the feeling of togetherness that they generate in the
crowd. The giant Rockefeller
Center Christmas Tree,
Macy's window display, fabulous decorations on Sixth
Avenue, skiing in Central Park – they may all be cliché, but
there's something about them that makes the horrendously huge city a
cozy place with a family-like feel to it. If New York is normally
called a city that never sleeps, then what name could possibly
describe it in the Christmas season?

celebrations with sightseeing in Bruges. Wandering through the
medieval town, Belgium's undeniable crown jewel, with its historic
buildings, picturesque canals, winding streets and charming bridges
is a treat in and of itself. Add to it Belgian chocolate and a whole
flurry of special events that take place at this time of year,
including the Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival, and you've got
Christmas to remember for a lifetime.

Falls and 23 other miracles of natural creation – go try and pick
just seven! Is there any point in discussing the superiority of one
over another? Nevertheless, the list of New7Wonders
of Nature has been announced, whether we think it's
unfair or not. The choices are still provisional as the voting
calculation is now being validated and the confirmed winners will be
announced not earlier than during the Official Inauguration
ceremonies early in 2012. Here's what we are expecting to
find among “the Great Seven”.

The Amazon

The Amazon. By Edson Cavalari

Encompassing seven million square kilometers and spreading over nine
countries, the Amazon Basin comprises the most astounding and most
species-rich tract of tropical rainforest on Earth. Over 500 mammals,
175 lizards, over 300 other reptile species, one third of the world's
birds and about 30 million insect types compete for survival in the
thickets of the canopy jungle. The life force of the rainforest - The
Amazon River - is the largest river in the world by volume and for much
of its path, it can be as wide as 11 kilometers. With a total flow
greater than the top ten rivers worldwide combined, the Amazon gushes
around 105 billion liters of water into the Atlantic every minute. Not a
single bridge crosses the Amazon.

Halong Bay

Halong Bay. By Butch Osborne

Countless tourists flock to Vietnam
with the sole purpose of witnessing the wonder of Halong Bay. Some
1,900 islands and islets - mostly uninhabited and unaffected by human
presence – make up for approximately 1,553 square kilometers of a
stunning seascape. Enormous caves and numerous lakes found inside
some of the islands are yet another factor that makes Halong Bay an
unmissable corner of the world. Here and there, floating villages of
fishermen are supported by enormous karst formations – a picture
that dwells in the heart forever after.

Iguazu Falls

No words can describe the collective splendor of 275 falls making
up Iguazu. Found on the border between the Brazilian state of Paraná
and the Argentine province of Misiones Falls, the semi-circular wall
of gushing water extends over 2,700 meters and is surrounded by two
national parks that brim with rare species of wildlife. Two paths are
available for tourist. Take the lower one leading to the base of the
falls to get sprayed all over or choose the upper circuit for an
astounding panoramic view of Iguazu's majesty – both options will
leave you completely at a loss for words.

Situated just off the southern tip of
South Korea, Jeju Island is a perfect getaway for those keen on
hiking, catching sunsets over the ocean, riding horses or just
winding up on sandy beaches. Although tourism is taking a firmer and
firmer grip of the island, it manages to retain its paradisaical
quality and many of the facilities are kept low-key. A central
feature of Jeju is Hallasan, the tallest mountain in South Korea and
a dormant volcano, which rises 1,950 m above sea level.

Initially established to conserve the endemic Komodo dragon, Indonesia’s Komodo National Park now protects the entire biodiversity of the three larger islands Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller ones, all of volcanic origin. Craggy hillsides, lush vegetation, snow-white beaches and azure waters surging over coral make up for a serene, multicolored vacation setting. The presence of the giant, aggressive lizards, however, gives the park a certain air of harshness and thrill.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River winds through a cave located about 50 km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. A clear, inviting lagoon framed by ancient trees has formed at its mouth, but is not in the least bit foretelling of what you are going to see as you enter the abyss in a tiny rowing boat. Serene and sparking on the outside, the 8.2 kilometer navigable river takes you into a dark, sinister realm of overwhelming silence and giant karst formations. Molded over hundreds of years, the impressive stalagmites and stalactites often resemble real life objects and creatures. Until the 2007 discovery of an undeground river in the Yucatan Peninsula, the Puerto Princesa river was reputed to be the world's longest subterranean waterway.

Table Mountain is a South African icon
and the most recognized landmark of Cape Town. The flat-topped
formation with peaks reaching 1,086 m above sea level has withstood
six million years of erosion and is the only natural site on the
planet to give name to a constellation of stars - Mensa, which is
Latin for "the table." A distinguishing feature of its unique ecosystem is
the richest, yet smallest floral kingdom in the world, including over
250 different species of daisies! The mountain is discernible from
almost everywhere in the city and yields some absolutely dazzling
views of Cape Town's fabulous beaches. A cable car ride to the top is
an unmissable experience that forever throbs deep in the heart.

Summer moves on but your travel radar needn't die down. Make the best of the autumnal aura, inhale the thick scent of foliage, listen to leaves rustling underneath your feet and watch them waltz around with the wind. Where? Here's a couple of places where the season looks at its most adorable.

Kyoto, Japan

You've heard of Kyoto as the number
one place to hit in the cherry blossom season? Now try to picture the
infinite pinkishness turn into the sea of bright red and you
understand why the city is also one of the world's most enthralling
destinations to observe fall foliage. Amidst a backdrop of temples
and shrines, the Japanese maple trees draw so many visitors in the
second half of November that it seems there are actually more people
than leaves in the city. Despite the crowds, venture into Kyoto
Imperial Park, take a look around Kodaiji Temple, and make sure you
indulge in night viewing, when the trees in several spots are
beautifully lit up for visitors.

Maiko Sayaka under autumn leaves. By onihide

Saimyou-ji temple. By Marser

Quebec, Canada

Winter's skiing season may be the best known of Quebec's natural offerings, but it's not the only one. In concert with the autumnal equinox, multicolored foliage is unfolding throughout much of the province and crisp chill provides the perfect backdrop for remote escapades. Pristine reserves, majestic mountain ranges and windswept coastlines sit on the wilderness front while sidewalk cafés, perfectly manicured gardens and history-soaked quarters await in the metropolises. Montreal and Quebec City are ablaze with color, so urbanites will get their share of autumn delights as well. But it is only off the beaten track that you get to see the full radiance. Parc national de la Gaspésie is a must, Bleu Lavande will make a perfect spot for agrotourism, and a rail cruise on the American Orient Express will stir more emotions than you are probably ready to handle.

Lachute, Québec. By Imapix

Montreal. By judo_dad1953

New England, USA

The New England Fall is almost a legend. Nowhere else in the entire USA does the season look so rich, juicy and fairylike. Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut - they all exude captivating charm, but it is the sugar maples of northern New England that put on the most spectacular golden display. See it, smell it, feel it, touch it – you won't be able to stop feeding on this splendor with all your senses. The bad news is, however, you won't be alone. When the foliage is ablaze, New England swarms with tourists, so planning ahead is your ticket to ensuring a hassle-free, memorable stay. Booking lodging in strategic locations is the best you can do. Consider Litchfield, CT, Quechee Gorge, VT and Bethel, ME.
Bavaria, Germany

Flower-clad houses, idyllic meadows, grazing sheep and cows dangling their little brass bells - Bavarian countryside oozes tranquility through every pore. Go figure it gets even quieter and less hectic when autumn strikes with its wondrous palette of colors. It's definitely the best time for hiking and sightseeing. However, if alpine splendor and castles perched on top of craggy cliffs don't quite appeal to you, then Oktober Fest with its pork knuckles, rivers of beer and high-spirited Bavarians surely will. This much-loved festival running from September 17th till October 3rd may well be the principal reason why the region is worth visiting in the fall.

Douro Valley, Portugal

The growing season has come to an end,
the vine-covered hills are dressing into all shades of red and the
ever-colorful Porto gets some extra orange glamor. Can there be a more
romantic time to indulge in the region's viticulture offerings? Step

tread the grapes accompanied by a local accordionist at the Quinta de

North Xinjiang, China

Covering about one-sixth of China's total territory and peopled in mere 4.3%, Xinjiang is the place to go if you're looking for undisturbed solitude and virginal scenery. Whereas South Xinjiang is mostly desert, the northern part offers purely mountainous landscape, extensive grasslands, pasture-based culture and endless delights for keen hikers. Why go in autumn? The contrast between the emerald waters of Kanasi River and the copper-tinted world around it is perhaps one of the most captivating sights to behold ever. Kind of reminiscent of Dali...

Transylvania, Romania

How about
Halloween in Transylvania? Whether you give any credence to the
blood-curdling lore and legends, it's hard to avoid shivers when
the thick autumn fog falls upon the hills, leaves crackle underneath
your feat and the wind races through the galleries of Bran Castle.
So, if you're a fan of getting the creeps, Transylvania is more than suitable a place to test your composure. Nature lovers will certainly find
an equal share of delights. Hiking is really big here and the
Carpathians look truly amazing when clad in autumnal colors. And if
you're in for scenic rides, go check the Transfăgărășan – by

Bieszczady, Poland

Bieszczady is a place you fall in love with at once. This last bastion of true wilderness in Poland is
where you learn humility towards nature and people, get an insight
into your primitive longings and take a different perspective on
what's important in earthly existence. Life-changing contemplation only comes natural in the metaphysical aura of autumn in
the mountains. Tiny settlements in the middle of nowhere, age-old
orthodox churches, endless stretches of deciduous
forests and uncharted routes that have barely seen a human foot
– if you enjoy wandering aimlessly from dawn to dusk, Bieszczady
will do the trick. And make sure you prick up you ears for some
blood-curdling howls at night – they say the region is known for the highest

chatterers, smooching lovebirds, armrest hogs and selfish seat
recliners – we hate them all with the utmost passion. But nasty
travelers get classified not only by the infuriating things they do
on planes. Every now and then a list of the world's most annoying
nationalities gets published, stirring as much consenting laughter of
those at the receiving end as it does clamor among those who find themselves
complete the roll call. Here's 8 that always get the dubious badge of
their countries' bad ambassadors, together with 8 reasons why we are ready to turn a blind eye...

Indians

Indians don't fair well in the
politeness stakes as hoteliers all over the world describe them as
rudest, most indifferent to local culture and least likely to tip.
Local cuisine is also something they will approach with suspicion,
and the level of noise they generate is considerably higher than
what's on average considered tolerable. Anything that exculpates this
off-putting reputation? Well, despite the fact that rudeness really
is a national problem in India, other attributes need to be
interpreted in terms of a specific cultural pattern. Tipping is not a
norm in India. Nor is saying thank you, and nobody makes fuss about
it there. Quite the contrary, aggressive haggling runs in the Indian
blood and so is the tendency to speak quite loudly. On the other
hand, cross-cultural etiquette should apply to everyone and it is the
awareness of some universal rules that makes traveling a pleasure for
both the guest and the host. After all, when in Rome ...

Taj Mahal, Agra. By RTQ

Greeks

OK, this one is quite controversial. As host Greeks are considered exceptionally warm and friendly, but somehow got on TripAdvisor's list of the most annoying tourists. What may be to blame? Well, Greeks can be very loud and disruptive in public, often speaking too loudly, yelling at each other and fully exercising their range of explicit vocabulary (perhaps hoping nobody will understand). They also tend to be quite demanding of restaurant staff and will often complain about the service or quality of food. Heavy smoking doesn't win them friends either.

Santorini. By polarkreisthiele

Russians

The list of wrongdoings committed by
Russian tourists is as long as the Volga River. Some of them however
are so ridiculous that they seem more of a legend than real offenses
to travel etiquette. OK, they may have terrible taste in
fashion (happily combining tracksuits with golden jewelery) and
appalling table manners (belching and swearing through meals). It's
also within belief that they sport their money around (expecting
hotel staff to be their servants) and cut in line in bars. But the
idea that they load doggie bags with buffet food and hide sunloungers
in their rooms overnight to make sure they get a spot at the pool in
the morning seem a little far fetched. Or maybe?

Chinese

Fine. So what did those courteous,
respectful people do to get on the list? Well, perhaps the reason is
because “they cruise the gambling tables like Baracuddas with a
sore stomach”, as one tourist to Vegas has nicely put it. The thing
is that for the Chinese traveling is a relatively recent phenomenon,
and a luxury that still not everyone can afford, so once they are
out, they feel compelled to make the most of the moment. And that for
instance boils down to the fact they always want to look at their
finest (including wearing ties and high heels when hiking in national
parks), tend to enjoy high level of noise and opt for sightseeing in
large groups, often blocking passages, obstructing views and simply
disturbing silence. But can we really be mad with them? It seems we
just need to give them a little time to learn how to be tourists.
Luckily, the Chinese foreign ministry have issued guidelines to help
Chinese tourists learn appropriate behaviors when traveling abroad.

British

The British are a hard nut to crack.
For three years in a row, they have been named as messiest, meanest,
scruffiest and worst
behaved … but only in Europe. In Greece, for instance, local
residents and business-owners held a protest against British
tourists, because "they get drunk, they exhibit themselves in
front of our eyes", and frequently get arrested for random acts
of violence and vandalism. Outside Europe, however, British
holidaymakers hover around the top in the worldwide Best Tourist
rankings, with over 15% of the surveyed commending them for their
generosity and politeness. Weird...

Germans

Before
the Russians arrived on the international scene, it was the German
tourists
who fell subject of habitual jokes about hogging
sunloungers at the crack of dawn. But much as they've been knocked
off the top spot, they still have enough vice to secure themselves a
place on the podium. Not only are they claimed to be the most
fashion-challenged tourists (right beside the Americans), but also
get really bad marks on politeness towards waiters and hotel stuff.
There are even rumors that they've been frequently caught stealing
from tip plates on bars. Some of us have apparently been hit by the
crisis harder than others...

Neuschwanstein Castle. By MPOBrian

Americans

Just as with the British, putting a
clearly-defined label on the lot of American travelers would be quite
unfair. They were holding the 'worst tourists' crown for years,
mainly for their noisiness, frequent complaining, bad taste in
fashion and obnoxious remarks on why none of the locals spoke any
English. And although there's still quite a lot to do to shrug off
the reputation of a slobby, noisy, ignorant American, the US tourists
have managed to warm up their image abroad, basically by getting top
marks for generosity, as the biggest spenders and tippers, and
readiness to try local cuisine.

Horseshoe Bend, AZ. By NikonKnight

French

For years the Americans have been the undisputed champions of
holiday rudeness. But it seems their reign has finally come to an
end in favor of the French. A survey by Expedia reveals they come
across as penny-pinching, impolite, inattentive to local customs and
least ready to try a new language. Who in fact hasn't been at
the receiving end of this indifference?
It's true that the French have been blessed with a fabulous country and don't need to go abroad much. Consequently, they may not be familiar with travel etiquette and even a bit stressed when on holiday. But does this really excuse arrogance?

Provence. By publik_oberberg

_____________________________________________________________________________

Just to finish it all off, do you think
the label of the world's worts tourist can really be stuck on any
particular nationality? And isn't it that we can put up with anything
– scruffy clothes, bad table manners, ignorance in terms of local
culture and language – as long as we are addressed with courtesy
and respect?

more aptly. Meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish, this UNESCO
protected wonder does look like cascading royal terraces floating in
the infinite sea of strikingly white fluff. The site has been formed
by limestone-laden thermal springs which let the calcium deposits
grow into potholes, stalactites and cataracts, and the best part is
that you can take a dive into the curing waters. Legends are told
about Pamukkale's beautifying powers – you may believe them or not
– but its medicinal properties to the ills of asthma and rheumatism
are quite tangible. The bath itself is all the more exciting that it
can be enjoyed amidst the dignified remains of ancient Hierapolis.

Jigokudani - Nagano Prefecture, Japan

There's nothing like a relaxing bath. By chris-lh

    Hostile
forests, treacherous cliffs and boiling water that bubbles out of
almost invisible cracks in the frozen ground have earned it the name
“Hell's Valley”. But it's not so much the springs themselves that
attract hordes of visitors to the park as the wild Japanese Macaques
that descend to the valley during the winter months to thaw their
bones in the steamy pools. Watch them cuddle together and play in
deep snow. So hilarious! Of course, Jigokudani is not all about
monkeys. Skiing routes abound and so do opportunities to take
massages, visit temples, participate in authentic tea ceremonies, try
Japanese archery or cook soba noodles. All in all, a stay full of
genuine relaxation and fun.

Huanglong - Sichuan, China

Thousands of years of geological
evolution have shaped this solitary land into a wonder beyond
measure. It's not much of a surprise that Huanglong Scenic and
Historic Interest Area has been declared a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO. As you enter the valley, you'll immediately be awed by
images of snow-clad peaks, thick virgin forest and clusters of
outstandingly beautiful ponds that sparkle with a wide range of
colors from orange and yellow to green and blue. Blooming flowers,
swift waterfalls, bottomless caves, butterflies fluttering their
wings above your head and a number of endangered animals add to the
overall splendor of this “Fairyland
on Earth.”

Champagne Pool - New Zealand

There's
a geothermal haven to be explored within the Wai-O-Tapu
Thermal Wonderland,
just 20 minutes drive south of Rotorua.
There, in a natural bush setting and among bubbling mud pools, you
will find a few prominent examples of world's most amazing geothermal
features. Walk
across
the Artist's
Palette
via a wooden walkway, watch Lady
Knox Geyser
erupt to heights of up to 20 meters and above all, be left agape at
the colorful splendor of 65 m-deep Champagne
Pool.
CO2 bubbles truly make this unusual spring look like a pond of Dom
Pérignon, except that the vibrant hues make it so much more
exquisite.
What a visual treat!

Travertine Hot Springs - Bridgeport, CA, USA

Doesn't this rock remind you something? By renefulcrum

Located south of Bridgeport, along the eastern front of the Sierra,
Travertine Hot Springs is an enjoyable stop on the way from Yosemite …
for those who know of its existence. There are no markers along the
highway and the place is largely a secret so it basically remains as
natural as it gets. Clothing is optional so be prepared for nudity
around. Probably the best thing to do is just strip it all off and let
yourself go. And they say there's nothing like going on a night with a
full moon high in the sky.

Grand Prismatic - Yellowstone, WY, USA

Ring of fire - Grand Prismatic. By Tyler McCall

Nothing describes this star attraction
of Yellowstone's Midway Geyser Basin as accurately as its very name.
It's grand - approximately 370 feet (112.8 m) in diameter and over
121 feet (37 m) deep – and prismatic – with a mesmerizing rainbow
of colors representing variations on the temperature of the water.
But words can give you but a mere idea of what Grand Prismatic really
is like. A cyclop's dreadful eye, a ring of fire, the gate to hell – people have described it in a variety of
ways, but the experience is always one-of-a-kind. If there's one
thing that you – as a tourist – should ever splash out on, it's a
helicopter ride that shows you all of this splendor from up high.

Blue Lagoon - Grindavik, Iceland

“Energy for
life through forces of nature” - so goes the motto found on Blue
Lagoon's website. 50 kilometers off Reykjavik there sits Iceland’s
most popular geothermal spa and one of the most recognized wellbeing
retreats worldwide. Six million liters of milky-white seawater and
open views across the lava fields make it not only serene but also
quite surreal an experience. Of course, the self-applied treatments
in steaming waters and semolina-like silica mud pools come with the
package of soothing massages and splendid accommodation to give you
the kind of pampering you'll hardly find elsewhere in the world.

Mammoth Hot Springs - Yellowstone, WY, USA

Welcome to the world's greatest natural chemical laboratory, where
heat and water have molded a complex system of outstanding travertine
terraces, which constantly change shape and color. Located
near the northern entrance to Yellowstone and accessible the year
round, Mammoth Hot Springs make for an ideal day-trip attraction and
one of the most astonishing sights in the whole park. Both the Lower
Terrace Trail and the Upper Terrace Loop give you access to
convenient overlooks that allow unobstructed views of the area and
reveal the multicolored splendor in all its glory.

just as firmly as legendary quotes. And while some have absorbed Don
Vito's "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse"
into their everyday lexicon, others will muse over how absolutely
adorable young Michael Corleone looked against the undulating
landscape of Sicily. So, here's a host of destinations that not only
provide a tangible context for the script and play a major role
in creating mystique, but also showcase the world's multiple faces
and inspire for travel.

Dead Horse Point, USA - Thelma and Louise

Thelma and Louise - final scene

The story of gullible Thelma and charismatic Louise may not be
altogether original, but it certainly fires the imagination with
Utah's brick-red colors. An enjoyable combination of road movie, police
chase, friendship and cheeky feminism makes us fond of the two
protagonists, and our hearts freeze as their car flies off the edge
of the cliff in the final scene.

The unexpectedly dramatic ending stirs emotions, and so does the
legend of Dead Horse Point. Towering 2000 feet above the Colorado
River, the neck of the formation was used by cowboys to corral and
capture wild horses. One time a herd of unwanted mustangs was
inadvertently left waterless behind a 50 feet fence, where they died
of thirst. Dead Horse Point is a marvel of form and color that,
despite its grim history, never fails to awe visitors.

Ngong Hills, Kenya - Out of Africa

Out of Africa

This ultimate
love story starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep made Kenya's
outdoor splendor known to the world outside of Africa. As the
two star-crossed lovers make it through the ups and downs of life and
their relationship, the viewers become acquainted with the wild
spirit of safari country outside Nairobi, where the Ngong Hills roll
gently along the Great Rift Valley and dignified roars of lions echo
in the dry air.

For
spirited travelers with a taste for the
real thing, following the footsteps of Karen Blixen
might just be the extraordinary adventure they're craving. There is
a walking trail along the tops of the Ngong Hills. Somewhere on the
eastern slopes, the solitary grave of Denys Finch Hatton overlooks the extensive game reserve.

Ngong Hills. By /Sean

Maya Bay, Thailand - The Beach

The Beach

Those who didn't drown in Leo's
hypnotizing gaze or somehow weren't gripped by the plot had as many
as 119 minutes to feed their eyes with paradisaical images of
Thailand. Most of the filming was done in divine Maya Bay on Phi Phi
Leh island. This turquoise realm of snorkeling and kayaking,
sheltered by 100-meter high rocky outcrops, formed a heavenly backdrop
for a story as grisly as the depths of hell. Ever since the movie was
released, Phi Phi Leh together with its sister island Phi Phi Don
have seen a rapid increase in tourist numbers, which makes the spots
a little less pristine but certainly worth a go as the beaches are
said to be of world prominence.

The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, USA - The Shining

The Shining

The artistry of
Jack Nicholson would allow him to build suspense even wearing a bunny
costume in the Easter egg hunt, but the role of the gloomy Rockies
and eerie Stanley Hotel in creating the movie's spine-tingling
atmosphere can't be denied. Kubrick turned the luxurious historic
building overlooking the Estes Valley into the seat of madness, with
endless corridors that promise no escape and spiritless interiors
that trap in confinement despite their loftiness.

Today the hotel
bids visitors welcome with glistening light, old-world charm,
state-of-the-art amenities and breathtaking panoramic views ... as
well as a ghost tour for the most daring. All this for anything
upwards of $150. What a treat!

Matmâta, Tunesia - Star Wars

Tatooine

Tatooine floated somewhere in ‘a galaxy far, far away’, but the locations for George Lucas's remarkable fantasy are quite easily accessible in Tunisia. A few kilometers southwest of Gabes spreads the mountain town of Matmata, home of the otherworldly troglodyte dwellings and a memorable set of Star Wars Episode IV: New Hope. If you've ever been wondering how on Earth Lucas managed to so authentically create the extraterrestrial ambiance in 1977, the harsh, barren, eroded landscape of Tunisian desert is the most comprehensive answer. A real treat for an avid fan is staying overnight at the Sidi Driss Hotel, where the interiors of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's house were filmed and some of the set dressing from the movie can still be seen.

Sicily, Italy - The Godfather

The Godfather

Although the lion's share of Francis Ford Coppola's classic saga takes place in rapidly industrializing New York, it does withdraw to the pastoral, rustic Sicily - the ancestral home of the ill-famed Corleone family. The town of Corleone, however, was too developed at the time of shooting, so the choice fell, among other places, for Savoca. On entering the charming hillside village, you will immediately notice Bar Vitelli, where Michael discusses his proposed marriage to Apollonia with her father. This is where you will also find the church they wedded in. Winding roads, tranquil ambiance, Sicilian hospitality, stone-flagged buildings and vine-covered terraces – Savoca is a perfect place for a leisurely weekend with the story of unyielding family values and grim revenge under the skin.

Savoca. By Rocks in Silence

Dharavi Slum, India - Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire

      Some movies grab our hearts
with marvelous scenery, others impress with outstanding acting.
Slumdog Millionaire does none of these. Its competitive advantage is
the agonizing realism of the way it features Asia's
largest slum. On the one hand there's a love thread and
the
"rags
to riches" motif, on the other, we get to witness misery that
goes beyond imagination and it's not easy to rub out this picture.
Oppressive odor,
heart-breaking conditions and religious violence are a depressing
reality for about 1
million people in Mumbai's Dharavi.
Now that it's been popularized by the Oscar-winning production,
the slum draws
countless visitors willing to "get the real taste of distress".
And while the revenues are said to go directly to the community,
whether to recommend the visit or not is a hard nut to crack.

Dharavi Slum. By marcusfornell

Tongariro National Park, New Zealand - The Lord of the Rings

Mordor

The decision by Peter Jackson, a born and bred New
Zealander, to film The Lord of The Rings in his home country may have
been due to deep patriotic feelings. But it quite fortunately
coincided with the fact that there are few places on Earth to rival
this little piece of Oceania in its mystique and awe-inspiring
beauty. So omnipresent is New Zealand's splendor that it even bursts
through the grandiose facade of computer-generated graphics, which
the movie could largely do without and still manage to project the
air of fantasy.

Guided tours take you to the most memorable locations,
including the lush areas around Matamata that was used to portray
Middle-earth and the stunning Tongariro National Park that provided
locations for Mordor, with its three grand volcanoes and dizzying
open spaces.

The grass is greener on the other side
of the fence – this is becoming a guiding life principle for
increasing numbers of people these days. Sometimes it's only about
relocating to a different part of a country, but the most restless
types will go to the end of the world to find their own Shangri-La,
where they can live for peanuts and call themselves expats oh so
proudly. Ideally, it should be a place that's cheap, beautiful and
prosperous, but then again, you can't always have your cake and eat
it, right? If you've been toying with an idea to leave everything
behind and start a simpler life, here's yet another list of cheap
countries to live in to broaden your options.

No breakdowns of
costs are attempted; just another set of hints for those who
seriously think of an expat life and are ready to scour other sources
for reliable data. Here's where your dollars will certainly go a long
way.

Indonesia

A perfect morning at Nusa Dua beach, Bali. By sektordua

Idyllic
islands, fabulous wildlife, legendary sunsets and unsurpassed
architectural glory – there must be a price for all this. You think
Bali and images of exorbitant prices blur your vision of life in
paradise? Mistake! Much as the glossy resorts may rip you off, life
in Indonesia is extremely cheap.
Whether you fancy living on a tropical island or in the heart of
bustling Jakarta, making
ends meet should never be problematic. And if it wasn't for oppressive
humidity, Indonesia would probably be
one of the most sought after destinations to retire. Another catch is
that the unemployment rate
is very high and the available jobs are usually low paying, so you're
a lot better off running an Internet business of your own.

Cost of
living in Indonesia

Paraguay

Paraguay still
remains quite off the tourist radar, and that's perhaps the first
thing that makes it a suitable place to settle down for a while. It
is also the least densely populated country in South America - though
it may not show in the major cities- so if you have your sights set
on becoming a cattle rancher (ranch
tourism is becoming increasingly
popular), this may be one of the best places to set roots. But the
reasons don't end here.

According to the Cost of Living Survey
conducted by Mercer, Paraguay is the
cheapest country in the world, where a
downtown apartment will cost you around $200 per month. Essential
commodities are inexpensive and the employment environment for the
qualified employee is quite favorable. And there is so much beauty to
explore that you may well consider staying here for good.

Paraguay

Bolivia

As one of the most hypnotizing countries of South America and at the same time the most impoverished one, Bolivia offers unforgettable experience for a supremely low price. A furnished apartment outside city center will set you back only $200, everyday necessities are cheap and the range of inexpensive produce amazing.

Bolivia is actually called South America's retirement paradise, and while the natives often struggle with the hardships of life, expats really get a lot more for their money. With natural gems such as Uyuni and Laguna Colorada, vibrant culture, exceptionally endearing people, and a range of climates to suit almost everyone, Bolivia may soon no longer be a target only for adventure travelers, but also for those who dream of an affordable lifestyle revolution.

Cost of living in Bolivia

Laos

Luang Prabang. By Allie_Caulfield

You will be surprised at how far your money can go in Laos, especially if you decide to experience the culture as a true insider. Expats usually make a fantastic living by local standards, with much greater purchasing power than in their own countries. If you're ready to further economize on accommodation (you can get an unfurnished single-bedroom apartment for $100) or get your food from local restaurants, you'll be able to afford pleasures such as spa visits, exciting weekend outings and taxis with a few hundred dollars on hand monthly.

Most foreigners choose Vientiane as the retirement location. The capital is an inexpensive and safe city to live in, with the country's best facilities available. The only major drawback is the relatively low quality of medical units and the shortage of well-qualified doctors. Otherwise, Laos is a perfect place for those who enjoy things 'easy' and value people's warm hearts above all comforts.

Cost of living in Laos

Nauru

If you've
been dreaming of an exotic home away from tourist attention, Nauru
may well be the place. This smallest island nation on earth is known
as a tax haven,
with costs of living rated as low to moderate. As far as shopping is
concerned, goods are mostly imported, which makes them basic and more
expensive than mainland, but the lack of taxes usually makes up for
the expenses, especially that the economic downturn has sent the prices
down a bit.

Nauru is definitely not a picture perfect tropical island fit
for an exhilarating holiday experience, but the quality of
entertainment and number of water sports options are enough for quite
a pleasurable lifestyle away from the
world. Perhaps it should not be the
ultimate choice for retirement, but otherwise it is a recommendable
destination if you just want to get out of the confines of a block of
flats in your urban jungle and see what it feels like to be an
expatriate in a place that many people haven't ever heard of.

Albania

Thethi National Park. By Krasta_Krau

Quite a
newcomer to the popular list of the cheapest countries to live,
Albania is definitely not for everyone. If you're looking for a
comfortable lifestyle devoid of worries, you'd better think twice
before you relocate. But if you're in for making a difference and
ready to make it rough, the country will reward you with complex
history, wondrous vistas,
ethnic foods, low cost of living and some of the warmest hearts in
the world.

Albania may not have the conveniences of
most western countries and it's probably far less
safe, but its reputation of the most impoverished and lawless
countries in Europe is to a large extent exaggerated. It's true that
corruption is rampant and every bigger transaction needs to be
carried out with utmost alertness, but there are endless accounts of
British citizens living a happy life in Tirana or Shkoder, so it's definitely doable.
Once again, just to be on the safe side – choose Albania only
if you don't mind a backpacker style.

Cost of living in Albania

Guatemala

Antigua. By szeke

Some say
that life in Guatemala is cheap if you're already quite well off in
your country. Well, it's true that an ordinary working person without
a backup from their homeland bank account will not live like a lord
here, but most expats find it exceptionally easy to get by on a few
hundred dollars without giving up on entertainment and paid leisure
activities. In fact few retirement spots are as attractive and
economical as Guatemala (especially Antigua). Go figure one
can get a comfortable three bedroom single family home on the beach
for $100,000! Food is great, people lovely, climate favorable and
cultural heritage astounding. Looks like Guatemala is on its way to
the top of the “Most Wanted” list.

Cost of living
in Guatemala

Nepal

Koshi. By TheDreamSky

It
usually starts out with a single trekking trip. Then people fall head
over heels in love with Nepal and decide to come back for longer. And it's not
in the least because of living standards. Nepal
is one of the world’s poorest nations, with over 30% of its
population living below the poverty
line. Floods and landslides plague
the most impoverished areas and the economy is almost completely
reliant on international aid.

Yet
there's something about Nepal that's irresistible and endearing. Most
expatriates make it to Kathmandu, where you can live a very high
lifestyle for around $500 per person (especially if there are two of
you), but there are things that you just have to get used to such as
intestinal problems and lack of sewage
treatment. Why do people decide to
leave their comfortable lives behind and come to Nepal? Perhaps
they're drawn by the country's life-changing
spirituality, the gentleness of its
people or the awe-inspiring landscapes. One thing's for sure: it only
takes time until you understand the truth behind the slogan Don't
try to change Nepal, let
Nepal change you that
you read as you land at Katmandu Airport.

Cost of living in Nepal

Vietnam

There are
no words to describe how enchanting Vietnam is. From the
kaleidoscopic versatility of its landscape to the culinary
delights, the country can be explored to no end, without much
damage to the wallet. Quite logically, if a country is a popular
budget travel destination, chances are it will make for a splendid
permanent abode. And that's certainly true for Vietnam. Of course,
the cost of living in urban centers is comparable to major cities
elsewhere in the world, but outside metropolises, opportunities for
affordable living and business are continually improving. And even
if you decide to splurge on a home, you'll save up on food, which can
be gotten for a song from street stalls.

Anything you can add to the list?
