Network Marketing - Economy causing people to key into networking opportunities

In a soft economy, more people are turning to network marketing, according to Kim LaChapelle.

The 48-year-old holds the title of independent consultant and national vice president with Arbonne International.

Six years ago, LaChapelle began selling skin care products for Arbonne.

Founded nearly three decades ago and based in Irvine, Calif., Arbonne is best known for its anti-aging Swiss skin-care products, but also has products for weight loss, personal care, aroma therapy, nutrition, baby care and hormone balancing.

The company relies on a network of sales consultants who recruit other people to sell the product, as well.

LaChapelle said the more people a sales consultant recruits, the bigger the potential earnings are.

It’s called “network marketing” or “multilevel marketing.”

Companies such as Amway, Avon and Herbalife work under similar arrangements for most of their sales.

“There’s a world change going on,” LaChapelle said. “A lot of people like to refer to it as the economy, but in my opinion it is not a recession, but we call it that. We see a world shift going on. We see companies downsizing and outsourcing. From the automotive industry to corporate banking, jobs are being condensed. Network marketing has become the darling. It’s a way people can take back their lives. They can get time freedom and financial freedom.”

LaChapelle recalled her 16-year employment as a banking analyst.

“It wouldn’t have mattered how much schooling I had,” she said. “I was never going to be the president of the bank. There was a glass ceiling, and I could only earn so much.”

She said now that she has partnered with a network marketing company, her potential for income and growth is unlimited.

“Here’s the bottom line — no matter what is going on in the world, people have hair and people have skin,” LaChapelle said. “I don’t care how bad things get, women are always going to wear their lipstick.

“You can see it anywhere you go. Women are wearing their mascara, their lipstick and foundation. They are still looking for anti-aging skin care.”

LaChapelle said the responsibility of a consultant is to book parties and one-on-one appointments.

“They need to share these amazing products with family and friends,” she said. “As a consultant, you can sell at both retail and wholesale. At some point, your retail clients will want wholesale, and when you flip them over to a wholesale status, every time they order, you will get a 15 percent commission off their sales, plus at consultant level, you’ll get 4 percent and that keeps bumping up as you move up the management level.”

She said district managers receive 8 percent commission, and compensation builds as they climb the ladder.

“The compensation plan is really vast,” LaChapelle said. “It can sound a little complicated at first, but it’s only because it’s so generous.

LaChapelle said the company gave consultants a 15 percent raise this year.

Something else that’s new is consultants need to sponsor two people in two out of three months after joining the company.

“As of Feb. 1, Arbonne enhanced our success plan,” LaChapelle said. “It’s putting more money on the table for people working the business.”

She said active consultants can be enthusiastic without being annoying.

“Arbonne products sell themselves, so all we want to do is share them,” she said.

LaChapelle suggested that consultants give out product samples and ask potential clients for a commitment to try the product.

“That’s it, just getting the product into their hands,” LaChapelle said. “Once they have the product, they fall in love. The product literally sells itself.”

Anyone booking a home party receives free products.

“Very successful people who understand the concept of creating residual income typically are the ones that make it in this business,” LaChapelle said. “Whether it’s a woman who scrubbed toilets in a day-care center or a doctor, teacher or lawyer, they get it. They want their life back. They’re tired of trading hours for dollars. They want to spend time with their families.”

Since joining Arbonne in 2003, LaChapelle said she has become a national vice president and earned a Mercedes-Benz.

To maintain that level of management status, LaChapelle and her nation of consultants and managers must maintain a minimum group volume of $160,000 in monthly sales.

LaChapelle said an income of $50,000 to $100,000 a month is not unusual for those at the national vice president level.

She estimated that there are 15 national vice presidents in the Detroit area.

According to www.arbonne.com, the average compensation for a national vice president is more than $23,000 per month.

Consultants’ monthly compensation averages about $70, district managers average $242, area managers average $1,214 and regional managers average about $5,030, she said.

Carrie Reaume of Brownstown Township joined Arbonne nearly three years ago.

Reaume, director of behavioral health at The Guidance Center in Southgate, found out about the network marketing opportunity at a fund-raiser.

“I researched the company, the compensation plan and what they were doing in terms of global expansion, and I got really excited about the company,” she said. “This is a way you can make some substantial money.”

Reaume said the company’s compensation plan and quality products helped make her decision to become a consultant.

She spends 15 hours a week outside of her full-time job promoting the products, and schedules four home parties a month. In about eight months, Reaume reached the level of district manager. She has close to 50 consultants on her team and said the income she receives each month helps to pay bills.

Her income as a district manager averages $400 to $500 monthly.

“Arbonne is a great company for people looking to replace income or pay a few bills,” Reaume said.

Today there are more opportunities for consumers to explore natural beauty products because of the growing interest in green cosmetics. In fact, the natural and organic product industry was among the fastest growing in 2008, according to a 2009 report in Organic Monitor. Market research from NPD Group highlighted in 2009 noted that 64 percent of women are choosing natural over conventional beauty products.

But it may surprise consumers to learn how many skincare lines and cosmetics contain harsh chemicals or dangerous toxins. In a recent assessment of ingredients in 15,000 selected cosmetics and personal care products, the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit focused on threats to public health and the environment, found that 22 percent of all conventional products -- 3,300 commonly purchased items -- may be contaminated with harmful ingredients.

In contrast, products such as Glimpse feature green chemistry that includes select botanical ingredients that are nutrient-rich and free from dangerous ingredients. The cold processing of Glimpse preserves the natural potency of the phytonutrients found in the mangosteen and other active ingredients, while minimizing the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process.

In contrast Glimpse notably does not contain any of these ingredients or those on a longer list of 15 found to contain toxic elements.

Hollister noted that consistent with the Glimpse clean and green promise, XanGo has signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. The coalition's goal is to protect the health of consumers by requiring health and beauty industries to phase out the use of chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems, and replace them with safer alternatives.

By signing the Compact, XanGo pledges that all products in the Glimpse brand meet European Union (EU) formulation standards, which are much stricter than the U.S. regulations concerning the use of chemicals in health care products. By adhering to the EU standards, none of ingredients in Glimpse will harm the earth or wildlife. Unless stated otherwise, all financial information presented below, throughout this report, and in the consolidated financial statements and related notes includes Mannatech, Incorporated and all of our subsidiaries on a consolidated basis.

Notes

The global financial crisis, combined with the steep decline in customer demand and uncertainties associated with the shareholder and Texas Attorney General litigation that was settled in the first quarter of 2009, have intensified our need to accelerate cost-cutting measures and has forced us to reevaluate certain business priorities. During 2008 and the first quarter of 2009, we implemented various initiatives to reduce expenses while staying committed to our strategic plan of developing new, innovative science-based products, strengthening financial results, and adding value to our shareholders and independent associates.

The uncertainty associated with the current macro-economic conditions led us to take steps to improve our operating cost structure. In July 2008, we eliminated approximately 60 employees, or 15% of our U.S. workforce in an effort to reduce expenses and improve profitability. In addition, in January 2009, we eliminated over 25 permanent and contract positions. We anticipate roughly $4.5 million in annual future savings associated with these reductions. Depending on the severity and length of the financial crisis and its impact on our business, it may be prudent to take similar actions in the future. We also continue to eliminate non-essential costs and have postponed certain projects and international expansion plans in the near term.

Good day, and welcome to the PrePaid Legal Services first quarter 2009 earnings conference call. Today's conference call will be recorded. At this time, I would like to turn the conference over to Mr. Randy Harp, please go ahead.

Good morning. This is Randy Harp, Chief Operating Officer of the company. I want to welcome you to the 2009 first quarter earnings conference call for PrePaid Legal Services. Joining me here at our home office in Ada, Oklahoma, is Steve Williamson, our Chief Financial Officer.

Before we begin, I want to remind everybody that the conference call will contain forward looking statements, including our expectations of future results and future plans. The actual results might differ materially from those projected in any forward looking statement. Additional information concerning risk factors that could cause the results to differ materially from those forward looking statements are contained in our press release announcing this quarter's earnings as well as our disclosures in our public reports on Forms 10K, 10Q, and 8K filed with the SEC and available on the SEC Edgar website as well as our own website.

At this time, I would ask our Chief Financial Officer, Steve Williamson, to step through the more significant financial highlights for the first quarter of 2009.

I will first kind of go over the big picture of the quarter, give you a little summary. We had $3.1 million less in total revenues; and we had $4.2 million less in expenses and taxes, which resulted in a 7% increase or $1,159,000 increase in net income with a 9% decrease in diluted shares outstanding. That gives us an 18% increase in diluted EPS or $1.52 for the quarter.

2008 membership revenues decreases 2% primarily due to the decrease in the average premium in force and as we saw in the press release a reduced number of memberships outstanding. Associate services revenue declined primarily due to the lower eService fee that we receive for that product that we make available to the associate sales force. Other revenue is primarily the amortization and income of the $10 enrollment fee over a threeyear period that we collect on the nongroup memberships. This revenue has declined due to the decline in the new membership [inaudible].

Membership benefits decreased 3% more than the 2% decline in membership revenue due to the reduced benefit cost of our ID theft memberships. Remember that we entered into a new agreement with Kroll that reduced payments by $0.25 per member per month on January 1, 2009, and we have one more of those $0.25 per member per month reductions that will come into play on January 1, 2010. So we'll see another improvement or reduction in the benefit ratio first quarter of next year. The benefit ratio for the first quarter of 2009 was 33.9% compared to 34.2% for last year's first quarter.

Source: About.com The headlines are certainly enticing, especially in today's troubled economic climate. The idea of making money right away without any special skills or major investment appeals to the immediate need, while the promise of residual income appeals to the desire to not end up in your current financial position ever again. And some highly reputable network marketing companies have been built on this marketing & distribution structure... Avon, Mary Kay, Xango, Shaklee, Quixtar, Prepaid Legal, Ambit Energy, Amway, and more.

But then there's the down side... "Do I really want to pitch this to all my friends?" "Can I actually make money at it?" "How do I know it's not a scam?"

If you're considering an MLM, CDM, or network marketing opportunity, ask these six questions to determine whether a network, multi-level, or consumer direct marketing is worth your while (and your money).

Who is your upline? Take it all the way to the top. What do you know about the person who introduced you to the opportunity? Can you trust what they tell you? Are they willing to divulge exactly how much they've been making? And what about the founders of the company (assuming it's a newer company)? Have they been successful and reputable in their previous businesses? Investigate your entire upline just like you would a business partner you'd never met before.

What is the product? Is it something that would sell well in a retail store or via other traditional marketing and distribution channels? What's the competition like? How convincing are you going to have to be in order to sign up customers? If you're not an experienced salesperson, don't expect to become one overnight. You're going to have to become an evangelist for the product, so make sure you believe in it.

When will you start actually making money? Don't fall for the line that it takes months or even years to show a profit. You should be able to recoup any investment and start earning income within just a few weeks if there's really demand for the product. Making a living at it is another story. You need to be able to work it part-time in addition to other steadier income sources. Will you realistically be able to do that with this company?

Where is the product being promoted and where can you promote it? Is the company doing advertising and publicity of its own to help create demand for the product? And what restrictions are there on where and how you can promote it (advertising, web sites, etc.). There's not a right or wrong answer to that question - a wide open policy is more flexible for you, but for everyone else, too. If you're prepared to be highly competitive, that's fine, but if not, you may prefer to work with a company whose policy is more restrictive.

How were you recruited? Were you recruited primarily as a customer, with just a mention of "income opportunity", or was the primary pitch about the business opportunity? The ethical way to build a downline is to sign people up as customers first, and then if they like the product, they'll be drawn to become a rep. A hard-sell on signing up as a rep right at the outset should send up a red flag for you.

Why are you doing this? This is perhaps the most important question of all. If you're doing it because you think it's going to help you out of a cash crunch, forget it. If you're doing it because you think you're going to be rich in a year, well, it's fine to have a vision, but don't bank on it. On the other hand, if you really believe in the product, that gives you the best likelihood of success with it.

There are no absolute right and wrong answers to these questions. The point is to make sure that you're going into it with your eyes wide open. Many people have made a lot of money in network marketing, MLM, and consumer direct marketing, but many more have ended up wasting a whole lot of time and money chasing a pipe dream. You can ensure your success best by being sure you're getting into the right opportunity in the first place.

Man accuses Usana of operating as pyramid scheme

A Clark County man has sued Usana Health Sciences Inc., alleging the big direct marketer of nutritional and cosmetic products operates as a pyramid scheme in which independent distributors must focus on signing up more distributors as opposed to selling products.

Joseph Chirco, in his lawsuit filed last week in Clark County District Court, seeks to have the suit certified as a class-action representing all Nevada Usana distributors. His Las Vegas attorney is John Nowakowski.

Chirco claims to have lost money by purchasing a Usana distributorship.

He alleges violations of Nevada's deceptive trade practices act and accuses Usana of consumer fraud, of failing to disclose all required facts about its marketing program, of unjustly enriching itself at the expense of distributors and of civil conspiracy.

"Those already in the pyramid are greedily incentivized to recruit more and more distributors to grow the base for the benefit of those higher up on the pyramid,'' Chirco's suit charges. "It isn't until one is locked into a distributorship that it becomes clear that merely selling products to consumers without a pyramid position is not a realistically sustainable option. The only way for an associate to economically stay afloat is to recruit lower ranks for the Usana pyramid."

A Usana spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment on the allegations, which the Salt Lake City company has faced before in various lawsuits.

In its annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it's careful to comply with marketing laws.

"Associates are encouraged to build and manage their own business group by recruiting, managing, and training others to sell our products. Associates are compensated on sales generated by their business group, and they can also receive compensation by purchasing products at wholesale prices and selling them at retail prices," Usana said. "We believe that network marketing is an effective way to distribute our products because it allows person-to-person product education, which is not readily available through traditional distribution channels. This personal touch may enhance consumers' awareness of the health benefits of our products, as well as motivate them to live and support a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, we feel that network marketing appeals to a broad cross-section of people, particularly those seeking to supplement their income, start a home-based business, or pursue entrepreneurial opportunities other than conventional full-time employment."

As of Jan. 3, the company said it had 198,000 active associates who bought products; and 71,000 active "preferred customers" worldwide who bought products for personal use but did not re-sell products. Active was defined as someone buying products within the past three months. Of $429 million in net sales in fiscal year 2008, 88 percent was generated by associates and 12 percent by preferred customers, the company said.

"Although we have, from time to time, modified our network marketing system to comply with interpretations of various regulatory authorities, we believe that our network marketing program is in compliance with the laws and regulations relating to network marketing activities in our current markets," Usana said.
