Bulldog Backup Offers Users The Chance To Fix Their Online Backup Costs For The Next 5 Years

Bulldog Backup are offering users the chance to snap up a 1 Terabyte online backup account for just £1.25 ($1.96) per month with the cost fixed for 5 years.

(PRWEB UK) 30 January 2012
Bulldogbackup.com, the Scottish based Online Backup and Storage Company today announced a new promotional offer that is sure to warm up computer users this winter.

For a limited time the company is offering new subscribers the chance to fix their online backup costs for the next 5 years. And that’s not all; customers who sign up during the promotional week can get Bulldog Backup’s One Terabyte Protect account for just £1.25 ($1.96) per month.

Bulldog Backup’s Protect account allows you to easily and automatically backup all your pictures, music and other files to the cloud. Files can then be accessed or downloaded from anywhere or restored to your machine should your hard drive flame out.

Dougie Fisher, Bulldog Backup’s CEO, explained the reasoning behind the offer;

When we were looking at putting together our promotional campaign for 2012 I wanted to make the best offer possible available to our customers but at the same time give them the peace of mind that their backup costs won’t jump dramatically at the end of the first year. All too often promotional offers are for a limited time and I wanted to address that with this one.

When asked if this offer is likely to be repeated the answer was a resounding no.

The company is in the fortunate position of being able to chase market share aggressively in what is a highly competitive sector. This really is a onetime offer which we hope people will take advantage of and get onto our platform.

It’s not all good news though, such is the strength of the offer the Company has had to limit the offer to the first 70,000 users.

You can get your One Terabyte Protect online backup account by visiting Bulldog Backup, selecting the One Terabyte Protect account and entering the following code at the checkout: bullbonanza00. (Offer runs from 31st January to the 29th February 2012)

Bulldog Backup is a Glasgow based technology start up founded in 2010 by current CEO Dougie Fisher.

DVD restores used to be an option, at a cost of $99. This is now replaced by a 28 GB USB drive (that’s about 7 DVDs of space), at the same price.

Unlike DVDs, you can reuse the USB drive when you’re done restoring your files. In addition, even the most compact netbooks have a USB port, while they may not have a DVD drive.

Our Backblaze review will soon be updated to reflect this change.

The job to build the app was posted on oDesk.com: “Dropbox-to-IDrive” Windows+Mac app

One reason users do not change online backup services is because they’d have to upload their data once again. If a service could create a migration option, switching to that service would be easier. However, even this app (which is a step in making migration to IDrive easier) will “copy data from Dropbox to local cache” and then “transfer from local cache to IDrive account.”

I still believe DropBox is the easiest way to sync files between systems and share with others, but this tool is a great feature for IDrive customers looking to drop DropBox.

While Mozy Stash works as a stand-alone service, the cloud storage space it uses is shared with your Mozy online backup account. If you still have an unlimited account, you’ll need to convert it to a metered online backup plan.

Mozy Stash Installation

Installation is a breeze: agree to the terms of the license, choose where to install Stash, then click Install.

Mozy Stash Set-Up

Once the Mozy Stash software is installed, you begin the set-up process. This involves logging in to your Mozy Account, linking your computer & selecting the location of your Stash folder (which can easily be changed), then syncing your documents.

Using Mozy Stash

Mozy Stash adds an icon in the Windows taskbar; right-click, and you’ll be presented with a menu of options, including Stash’s current status, quota usage, and a link to Preferences.

The preferences for Mozy Stash are divided into two pages: Status and Settings.

The Status tab of the Mozy Stash Preferences window doesn’t give you much to do. You can pause syncing, or click a button to view your Mozy account. However, the Settings tab allows you to unlink (remove) the current computer from the Mozy Stash account, change the Stash folder location, throttle your upload speeds, control whether Stash automatically loads when starting Windows and whether or not to show notifications.

While you can change the Stash folder location, whatever you choose, the folder name will be Stash. Therefore, you cannot select an existing folder to be your “Stash” folder. For example, if you thought you could choose your entire “Documents” folder, that’s not true. If you choose your “Documents” folder as the Stash folder location, a folder named “Stash” will be created within “Documents,” and files copied into the new folder will be synced amongst your linked computers.

Mozy Stash Mobile Apps

Your Stash works as an online repository of documents, which you can access from your mobile device (Android or iOS). You can view and download files, but cannot upload them at this time. Future versions of Stash will have this functionality (remember, it’s in Beta!).

Mozy Stash Web Access

You can also access your Stash via the web, just like you can access your files backed up with Mozy online backup. However, at this time, you can only view and download files – uploading them back to Stash via the web is coming soon.

Mozy Launches Stash

Signals a sea change in the classic online backup market

SEATTLE – January 25, 2012 – Mozy® today announced public beta availability of Mozy Stash™, a new feature that provides Mozy customers with a simple way of keeping their files up to date and available across multiple computers, smartphones and tablets. Now Mozy customers enjoy an unprecedented service that combines Mozy’s industry-leading online backup with the ability to synchronize files across multiple computers with Stash.

Use of Multiple Devices Changing the Backup Market

In the seven years since Mozy helped pioneer the online backup market, the way we access and interact with our data has changed significantly. In addition to the growing adoption of smartphones and tablets, many people are using multiple computers. Mozy ensures photographs, music and documents accumulated over the years are protected for a lifetime, while making those same files available wherever you are, on whatever device you’re carrying.

Mozy has always protected its customers’ data against catastrophic loss, said Russ Stockdale, General Manager of Mozy. With Stash, Mozy customers will see a huge increase in the value they get from protecting their data with Mozy. Stash makes it easy to move from your computer at the office to your computer at home, without having to email files to yourself or mess around with USB drives.

Simple and Complete

The growing popularity of various file synchronization tools illustrates how our data needs have matured. While some of these tools enjoy wide acceptance, they force their customers to sacrifice complete protection for the availability of only a subset of those files created and accumulated over a lifetime. The combination of Mozy online backup plus Stash provides a complete data solution.

Stash uses a simple single-folder model which complements your online backup so that all your data is available where and when you need it, even if you choose not to synchronize it, said Stockdale.

Daniel Shirley, a MozyHome customer in Greensboro, N.C. concurs. I’ve been a Mozy user for a few years and was anxious to try out the Stash beta to keep my files up to date between my computers at work and home. Stash was very easy to set up. But what I like best is that even when I forget to put a file in my Stash, Mozy online backup ensures that I can still find it online, and then download it. Everything is right there. The complementary value of online backup and Stash can’t be overstated, especially when comparing it to other providers.

Together, Mozy online backup and Stash ensure that all files are protected and available to you from anywhere and from each of your computers as well as from iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Code 42 Software Releases Updated CrashPlan Mobile Apps for Elevated Security Accounts

CrashPlan and CrashPlan PRO apps updated to support highest security settings

(San Francisco – Macworld?iWorld 2012 Booth #910 – January 24, 2012) – Code 42 Software Inc., developers of award-winning onsite, offsite and online backup solutions for consumers, businesses and the enterprise, today announced updates and new security enhancements to the CrashPlan and CrashPlan PRO mobile apps. The latest version adds support for the two elevated security options used by many CrashPlan users. Users who have specified private passwords or private encryption keys for their backups, now have full access to their CrashPlan archives from the free mobile apps, without giving up the extra security they prefer. Code 42 will be demonstrating the updated apps, along with CrashPlan, CrashPlan PRO and CrashPlan PROe at Code42′s Macworld booth #910.

We took our time adding this feature, because of the extreme importance we (and our users) place on the security of CrashPlan, said Matthew Dornquast, co-founder and CEO, Code 42 Software. We had to be sure it was right and it was worth the wait. Not only have we added support for the highest security levels, we’ve dramatically increased the performance of the app when downloading from your archive.

The CrashPlan apps let CrashPlan+ or CrashPlan PRO users browse their backup archive, in the cloud, and download any files to any Apple iOS, Android or Windows device with just a tap. The apps are optimized for both phone and tablet devices, and feature built-in viewing for many common file types. An exclusive one-tap update feature informs the user when a file has been updated in their backup archive and retrieves the latest version of any changed file(s) with a single tap.

The mobile CrashPlan and CrashPlan PRO apps are currently available for free download via the Apple iTunes App Store, Android Marketplace, Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace and Amazon Appstore. The apps require a current subscription to either CrashPlan+ or CrashPlan PRO. A CrashPlan PROe app is expected to coincide with the release of CrashPlan PROe 3.0 later this year. To learn more about Code 42, visit their Macworld booth (#910) or www.code42.com.

While we’re working on bringing more of them onto this site, we keep finding many of these companies are nothing more than resellers of Livedrive.

Livedrive has a Reseller program which allows anyone with $60 to start their own online backup service. But as we’ve seen with Backify, things don’t always end well.

When we saw Mowbe (really? Mowbe? Moby? Mozy… I see what you did there) launch recently, we immediately checked out their website. Right away, we knew it was a Livedrive Reseller. How?

Briefcase

Livedrive reseller’s don’t hide the fact that they have this briefcase feature, and they don’t bother giving it a new name, either. When you see briefcase as a feature, it’s a good sign you’re looking at a Livedrive reseller.

Standard Icons

When you’re building a business on $60 / month, you probably don’t have the time, resources, or care to create new icons or be creative when listing features:

Livedrive Reseller Icons

Mentions of Livedrive

When copy & pasting text from the Livedrive website to their own, many Livedrive resellers sometimes forget to put their own company name in! For example, from mowbe.com/compare-products.php

We need to update our Livedrive review, but when we last tried it, the service was pretty miserable. Then the CEO made some libelous statements about us on their site (don’t worry, we saved a copy of it). But, when we reexamine this service, we’ll try to ignore the past and give it a fair chance.

Code 42 Software Closes $52.5 Million in First Round of Funding Led By Accel Partners

Code 42 Software Inc., developers of (CrashPlan) award-winning onsite, offsite and online backup solutions for consumers, businesses and the enterprise, announced the company has secured $52.5 million in venture funding. Led by Accel Partners with participation from Split Rock Partners, the funding will be used to accelerate product development and increase Code 42′s global market share via expanded sales and marketing efforts. This is the first major investment from Accel Partners’ recently announced Big Data Fund, dedicated to funding category-defining infrastructure and application companies in Big Data.

Founded by Mitch Coopet, Brian Bispala and Matthew Dornquast, Code 42 Software launched CrashPlan, personal data protection and backup software, in 2007. The intention of CrashPlan was to reinvent backup by developing an easy-to-use technology to protect data whenever and wherever it is created. After introducing CrashPlan to consumers, Code 42 used the knowledge gained in that process to develop and deliver software that is enterprise-grade.

Just five years after launching CrashPlan, Code 42 now manages and protects over 100 petabytes of data globally. In addition to CrashPlan for the home, Code 42′s product lineup includes online backup solutions for the SMB, CrashPlan PRO, and private and public cloud solutions for the enterprise, CrashPlan PROe. All products offer multi-destination, cross-platform, continuous protection onsite, offsite and online. With 86 employees, Code 42 has experienced more than 500 percent growth over the last three years.

We launched CrashPlan in 2007 with the intention of protecting the world’s information when it’s created, where it’s created, in real time. said Matthew Dornquast, co-founder and CEO of Code 42 Software. The explosion of mobile devices and cloud services has created big data and security opportunity for the enterprise. The CrashPlan suite of products is ideally positioned to provide continuous, real time data management and protection within these organizations. Accel has the unique ability to identify significant industry trends like ‘Big Data’ and ‘The consumerization of IT’ and help entrepreneurs translate those trends into category-defining global businesses. The insight and experience of our investor team will be invaluable as we scale Code 42.

Code 42′s state-of-the-art, enterprise backup solution, CrashPlan PROe, is in use by more than 4,000 customers globally including: Adobe, Google, Groupon, HP, Intuit, Kraft Foods, LinkedIn, NASA, National Geographic, Salesforce.com, Stanford University and The University of Texas. The adoption of Code 42 solutions by leading enterprise customers reflects the unmatched combination of security, scalability, and flexibility the company provides. Code 42′s flexible delivery model enables enterprise customers to simply and effectively protect their data onsite or offsite, via private or public clouds. According to founder Matthew Dornquast, Code 42 offers enterprise customers multiple paths to meet their data protection needs, united by common guiding principles: security, scalability, and ease of use.

Ping Li of Accel Partners and Michael Gorman of Split Rock Partners will join Code 42′s board of directors. Li commented, Big data continues to revolutionize data centers across all industries, opening up a massive market for entrepreneurial activity. As devices and the data they generate continue to explode, Code 42 is primed to make a profound impact on information data management for consumer and enterprise devices with their cloud back-up and future innovative big data applications. The company’s technology is unrivaled and Code 42′s profitable business model has proven itself. I’m excited to work with Code 42′s top notch team and support the company’s continued growth.

Code 42′s financing is the largest venture round in a private Minnesota-based software company, said Michael Gorman, managing director, Split Rock Ventures. By any measure, Code 42′s venture round is a seismic event in the Minnesota tech landscape and is further evidence that technological innovation is alive and well in Minnesota.

Users can backup 150GB for $4.95 / month, or 500 GB for $14.95 / month. This includes unlimited Windows, Mac, iOS or Android devices.

In addition, the upgraded mobile apps for iPhone and Android users now allow users to not only access their data remotely, but also backup contacts, videos and photos.

The final bit of IDrive’s latest announcement revolves around EVS, their data storage platform (comparable to Amazon S3 or Rackspace).

We’ll soon be updating our IDrive review with these latest details.

IDrive® Announces Universal Online Backup for an Unlimited Number of PCs, Macs, Smartphones and Tablets on One Plan; New ‘EVS’ APIs for Developers

Online backup and file sharing for an unlimited number of computers and mobile devices starting at just $4.95/month; IDrive mobile app enhanced; and new cloud APIs for developers to rival Amazon S3

CALABASAS Calif., Jan. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — IDrive has made public the latest versions of its Windows®, Mac® and mobile software – home users and small businesses can now protect as many computers, iOS and Android devices as they own with one easy plan – only at http://www.idrive.com.

We’re excited about the latest updates to IDrive, said Raghu Kulkarni, founder and CEO of Pro Softnet Corp. With a single account new customers can back up as many computers and mobile devices as they want and then view their files from any of those connected devices or on our website. Plus, the mobile app can now back up contacts, photos and videos and make them available online as well.

Those interested can create a free account and store their first 5GB at no charge.

IDrive offers two plans for home users: 150 GBs for $4.95/month or 500 GBs for $14.95/month, with no limits on the number of Windows, Mac, iOS or Android devices that can be protected or the length of time for file retention. For businesses, plans range from 50GB to 1TB starting at $9.95/month with priority customer support. Customers can receive two months free by paying annually and IDrive also offers 50% discounts for teachers, students and faculty. Full pricing details here.

Not All Backups Are Created Equally

Many backup services offer ‘unlimited’ storage space for a single computer at a flat rate, like $50 per year per computer – it sounds like a good deal at first, but back up 100 GBs from that one computer and you pay $50/year, back up just 50 GBs and you still have to pay $50/year: that’s where they get you, said Stephen Gold, Business Development Manager. Not only that, ‘unlimited’ storage plans almost always have very limited file retention, meaning they automatically remove data from your backup after you delete the files from your computer, usually just 30 days later. The question is, ‘What use is a backup that doesn’t contain files you accidentally deleted, say, six months ago?’ On the other hand, IDrive allows people to actually use all of the online storage they are paying for.

A quick summary of IDrive’s features and benefits:

Get full access to files from any PC, Mac, iOS or Android device,

Share any file/folder using an email address – easily swap large files with others,

Intelligent incremental backups/restores over a secure connection,

Available private key encryption for maximum security,

“True Archive” storage – data is never automatically deleted and the last 30 versions of each file are held without counting against GBs stored,

Continuous Data Protection for real-time backup of commonly used files,

No file size or type limitations – no bandwidth throttling,

Rapid Serve Restore – large restores can be physically shipped for quick disaster recovery,

IDrive builds its own hardware and software; the speed and performance can rarely be matched,

Live phone and 24-hour chat support.

IDrive Online Backup Mobile App Gets New Features

The IDrive mobile app makes it possible for users to access their account and share files while on the go. New updates bring the ability to back up contact information, photos and videos over a Wi-Fi or 3G connection to the IDrive cloud from iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices running iOS 4.0 or later as well as Google Android devices running 1.6 or later. The information is then made available via other connected computers and mobile devices as well as on the IDrive website.

IDrive is available for home and server editions of Windows and Mac OS X and for mobile devices in the Apple App Store and Android Market.

Why EVS (Encrypted, Versioned File System) for developers?

EVS was built to be faster, easier to secure and more affordable than other cloud platforms like Amazon S3, Rackspace and others.

As low as $4.95/month for 150 GBs of storage and no bandwidth fees – build and test apps using the free 5GB IDrive Basic plan,

Efficient and built-in 256-bit AES encryption with the option for a private user key for maximized security,

Upload/download thousands of files and folders with a single line of code,

The past 30 versions of each file are archived indefinitely – storage is calculated only for the most current version,

Incremental and compressed data transfers make uploads and downloads quick.

The EVS development team actively assists developers and partners with integrating APIs into their applications and new API codes can be created based on special needs.
