Spend some time getting to know the history, culture, politics and customs of the country where you’re studying. This will allow you to gain a better understanding of how the country works.

When making new friends, try to include making friends with people who have lived in the country for a while. This way, you can learn the language (including common phrases), find out where to hang out and cultural norms to help you gain the full experience of studying away from home.

If you are looking to find a job, talk about tuition or school related questions talk to your schools’ International Student office. They will be able to provide you with useful information and resources.

How to make the most out of your school year

We wanted to provide everyone with a few tips on how to have a fun, productive year back-at-school.

Set goals for yourself, whether you want to improve your marks, study abroad next year, getting back into shape or meeting new people. If you write it down- you are more likely to achieve your goals if they are written on paper for you to see on a daily basis.

Don't let your readings and essays' pile up- designate some time after each class to go over your notes, and making sure to stay up-to-date on your assigned readings- seriously, this helps you retain information and increase your understanding of the subject.

If you find yourself falling behind in a class, don’t wait until you’re a week away from your exam to get help. Ask your professor for extra help or look into hiring a tutor.

Participate in school activities, so that you can feel part of the community and you’ll be able to meet more people. This will also give you a more hands-on experience of being at a four-year school and its campus life.

Remember that University/ College is about learning to balance your social life, work, studies, friends, significant others, etc,

Tips for Freshman academic success

So you're about to start your freshman year at college/ university and are excited and maybe a little nervous about what to expect. The important thing is remembering to start your year off right by effectively managing your studies and developing good work habits.

A few tips on how to be successful at school:

Manage you own schedule, make sure to grab a syllabus for each class and write down all due dates on a large calendar where you can see them every day. This way you’ll be aware of what papers and exams are coming up.

Start your projects as soon as you can, that way you can have time to review your work, or get feedback from your professors or TA's.

Don't make your class lectures about catching up with your friends, sit at the front of the class if you have to and make plans to hang out with your friends later.

Don't be that student always showing up late for all of your classes, everyone will stare you down and you’re probably going to miss out on something important.

Do ALL of the assignments that get assigned. Even if it's a mini-assignment and only worth 5%- the extra marks can add up and can make the difference between your grade point average.

Try to review your notes after you leave class, this will reinforce anything you learned and help you retain information so you won’t have to cram as hard for exams.

VMware recently added vCenter Server Standard and VMware vCenter Lab Manager 4.0 to the list of free titles offered under the VMAP program to eligible students and faculty. VMware and e-academy have partnered to distribute product licenses to verified academic users worldwide. Product license include:

How to furnish your student place on a dime

If you’re moving into your own student housing this September- you probably understand the stress of trying to figure out how to afford new furniture for your new place. It doesn’t have to be that stressful, you just have to be resourceful; here are a few tips to help you:

Starting by asking your family members if they have any furniture they could donate to your Broke Student House Furnishing Fund, even old cutlery sets and pots and pans that never get used. You can help them by offering to help clean out the attic or garage to find some of these gems.

Check out the deals on Craigslist- seriously that site can have some amazing finds to deck your place out.

Check out yard sales, you can always bargain with the seller, as they usually just want to get the item out of their place.

Check out your local used furniture store or thrift shops. You can always find the cool retro piece and make it new with a splash of paint or stain.

Lastly- be creative which what you already have.
