In 1997, Jeff Kelley started making sandals out of inner tubes and indoor-outdoor carpet out of his garage. Today Jeff Kelley’s company, Sanük, is a $30 million a year company that pumps out its unique style of footwear all over the world! I got a chance to sit down with Kelley and learn about the ups and downs of starting his own footwear company and some of the decisions, sacrifices and triumphs that came along with it. Sanük sponsors a diverse group of professional athletes ranging from surfers like Donavon Frankenreiter and Dave Rastovich to rock climbers like Chris Sharma and Randy Leavitt. One of the things I took away from this interview was how much passion Jeff has for what he does and how he puts that passion into every design that comes out of the Sanük factory.
(And just in case you’re wondering, “Sanük” is the Thai word for happiness and balance.)

In 2005 Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book called “Blink”. In it, Malcolm discusses that moment when we first see something and are able to—in an instant—make a decision on whether we will like it or not, if it is good idea or bad a one, if it is real or fake. Well, this week I sat down with Creative Director Mike Robertson and Mike is one of those people who has mastered his “Blink-instinct”. He has the ability to know in an instant if a creative idea is worth looking at or if it is just simply not going to work at all. Most of my own editing skills come from years of watching Mike in the edit bay and seeing how he uses his “instinct” to make his edit decisions. He has a vast knowledge of advertising and has worked for some of the largest agencies in the world on some of the largest accounts. Mike is a true creative thinker.

Ten years ago, I got my first full-time job as a designer under the management of Chris Epting. I can truly say that without a doubt, Chris was one of the coolest bosses I ever had. Since then, we have both gone on to do other things. I went on to become the producer of OnAAiR and Chris went on to become a writer and has since written 16 books on pop culture. His books have been best sellers and have gotten him national acclaim. Obviously, I am the one who came out on top. This was definitely a cool interview for me. Besides getting to catch up with Chris, it was very cool that while we were doing the interview Chris’s son Charlie was across the room kicking it with my son Maximus talking about dinosaurs. P.S. Chris, you and Charlie owe Max and me a dig!

My name is Marcus Vadas and I am the host and writer of OnAAiR. We have some cool guests lined up to come on our show. Most are people I have worked with in the past. Others are people whose work I’ve been following for years even though I haven’t met them. All are at the top of their game and have provocative ideas about advertising and arts.

I am also stoked about the OnAAiR team. They are all experienced pros in their fields. Jim Hancock edits and shoots all our OnAAiR episodes, Rich O’Neill is our producer and operates the fisheye camera, Chris Swenson lights the show and runs camera two. John Reynolds makes sure our equipment is there on time and set up properly. These guys all work at the Post Modern Group where the show is filmed. I am fortunate to have PMG backing this show!
