From the outset, the tradition linked Marian devotion with Manila’s cultural life. Revived in 2019 before being paused by the pandemic, it returns this year as a tribute to a city where faith, culture, and fashion continue to meet.

This year’s celebration also carries a meaningful social purpose, with proceeds and partnerships intended to benefit Young Focus and the Children’s First 1000 Days Coalition, supporting programs for children, families, education, and nutrition.

Further expressing his enthusiasm for the procession, Mayor Isko said: “Wala nang gasolinang kailangan dahil lakad ito. Ang ganda naman... we practice what we preach. Sabi ko, energy saving.” His remark reflected his support for a celebration that offers hope and solidarity amid today’s global challenges.

Meanwhile, the event is also in close coordination with government partners for security and traffic management for an orderly celebration. The Philippine National Police (PNP) has committed at least 300 personnel for security, while the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will assist in traffic management. The participation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines as arch bearers is also being arranged.

The program culminates in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, a work that demands expressive depth. Expansive in scale and rich in emotional contrasts, Mahler’s symphony transforms simple melodies, challenging both the orchestra and the audience with its intensity. The MSO will be joined by selected members of the UST Symphony Orchestra in a side-by-side performance to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the UST Conservatory of Music, as many past and current MSO musicians have been connected to UST as students and faculty members.

Joshua Dos Santos, guest conductor

Joshua is an internationally celebrated conductor whose career has spanned Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Trained in Venezuela's legendary El Sistema, he began music at age seven and made his conducting debut at sixteen under the mentorship of Maestro José Antonio Abreu. Appointed associate conductor of the Simon Bolivar Chamber Orchestra in 2023 he has earned major acclaim from around the world.

Emanuel John Villarin, violin

EJ is an award-winning violinist and Hanns Eisler scholar. An student at the Universität für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin and first prize winner of the New York Young Performers Prize (2021) and NAMCYA (2020), he is an acclaimed Filipino violinist and MSJO-Standard Insurance scholar, performing on a master-crafted Gencer Cerit Eskisehir violin.

Christian Wrona, viola

Christian is a Filipino-Canadian violist and Hanns Eisler scholar. Currently studying at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, Christian is an Asian Youth Orchestra alumnus, mentored by renowned artists including Tabea Zimmermann and Kim Kashkashian.

UST Symphony Orchestra

The University of Santo Tomas Symphony Orchestra (USTSO), established in 1927, is a distinguished ensemble within the UST Conservatory of Music. Philippine Educational Theater Association once again proves its strength in socially grounded storytelling with the Set B of Control+Shift —a moving collection of performances that reflect the realities of struggle, resistance, and survival. Through two distinct yet thematically connected pieces, the production delivers narratives that are both intimate and deeply political.

“At Nagkatawang-Tao ang Verbo” feels especially resonant, coming fresh from the season of Lent. The piece draws a powerful parallel between the Passion of Christ and the lived experiences of ordinary citizens from Navotas and Malabon. By weaving the structure and tone of the Pasyon into its storytelling, it elevates the suffering of marginalized communities into something both sacred and urgent. Much like how Christ stood against the Pharisees, the play reflects the quiet yet persistent resistance of the powerless against those in authority. It is a painful mirror of reality—one that does not attempt to soften its message, but instead confronts the audience with the truth of systemic struggle.

Meanwhile, “Baga ng Gumuguhong Langit” shifts the focus to the lives of children caught in the crossfire of war. Despite its relatively minimal script, the piece is rich in meaning. The repeated words “tago” (hide) and “takbo” (run) take on dual significance—at once evoking the innocence of children’s games and the urgency of survival in a war-torn environment. This contrast heightens the emotional weight of the narrative, showing how conflict distorts even the most basic aspects of childhood.

What ties both pieces together is their reliance on physical storytelling. Even without heavy dialogue, the performances communicate clearly through movement, expression, and music. The actors bring depth and texture to their roles, proving that sometimes, the body speaks louder than words. The choreography and sound design work hand in hand to create an immersive experience that allows the audience to feel, rather than just understand, the stories being told.

This connection is further deepened through the recurring imagery reminiscent of the Pietà—a mother cradling a lifeless body. In both productions, this visual language becomes instantly familiar and emotionally charged for a largely Filipino, Catholic audience. It transforms individual loss into a collective experience of grief, echoing not only religious suffering but also the everyday tragedies faced by marginalized communities. The Pietà image bridges the sacred and the secular, reinforcing how these stories of pain and sacrifice are not distant—they are happening here and now.

3 Lessons from Women who Successfully built Careers in Freelancing

Mia and Dana share their freelancing journey and career growth at the She Talks Asia Summit 2026.

Earning through freelance work has never been more accessible. With a stable internet connection and numerous job platforms, opportunities can come from anywhere – and for many Filipino women, they do. A 2020 study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) showed that an increasing number of women are engaging in online work because it lets them earn while balancing home responsibilities.

But access doesn’t always mean ease. Freelancers face inconsistent income, unpredictable clients, and little guidance on how to navigate it all. For longtime freelancers Mia Juan and Dana Novales, building a career online has meant learning these lessons in real time. With more women entering the freelancing field, they share three lessons they’ve learned:

1. Build real relationships, not just transactions.

Freelancing can make work feel transactional. You get assigned a task, submit the work, get paid, and then move on. But the most successful freelancers don’t treat work that way.

In such an unpredictable field, being remembered matters.

According to Dana, “Real relationships are built on service, not strategy.” Every “Well done!” or “Good work!” can open doors to new opportunities, so don’t waste them. Instead, take an extra step to establish a real relationship with your clients: check in, understand what they need, and find ways to make the process easy for them.

2. Set up systems that work for you.

Handling different clients with different ways of working can get overwhelming fast. For Mia, having systems for your workflow simply makes this easier and helps manage client expectations.

That can be as simple as being clear about what services you offer. “It’s basically saying this is what I can offer and setting a clear boundary of what you do not do. That way, there is no miscommunication of responsibilities, which happens commonly in freelancing work,” she shares. It also helps to have a proper onboarding flow – having contracts, timelines, and payment terms in place before you start, not while you're already in the middle of the work.

3. Find solutions that work for your peace of mind.

Some challenges only appear once you’re in the midst of them, and for many freelancers, realizing that foreign payments come with fees, delays, and uncertainty is when freelancing starts to feel stressful.

“Earning in USD sounds exciting–until fees, forex, and delays eat into your income,” Dana points out. Liu won the attention of the classical music world during the 17th International Chopin Competition, where she established herself as one of the foremost interpreters of Chopin.

Not only did she win the competition’s 3rd prize, but Liu was also awarded on Polish radio as the audience’s favorite, winning the Best Mazurka Prize.

A musical form of Polish origin, Frederic Chopin’s Mazurkas are among his compositions that distinctly show his nationalism and deep admiration for his native culture. Liu will play her Op. 30 set alongside the Polish composer’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor, Op. 35, whose third movement contains the famous “Funeral March.”

One of the most memorable moments is hearing “Noong Unang Panahon.” Many of us know this song from our elementary days, so it’s exciting to realize that it comes from this production. It adds a personal and emotional touch to the experience.

All-Kundiman Night: Arthur Espiritu leads fundraising concert at MiraNila

A rare evening of Filipino music is set to take place this May as internationally acclaimed tenor Arthur Espiritu headlines his first-ever all-kundiman concert, Mga Awit ng Pag-ibig at Kundiman. Happening on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at Gallery MiraNila in Quezon City, the one-night-only performance also serves as a fundraising initiative for heritage conservation.

Presented by MiraNila Heritage House & Library in partnership with The Blue Leaf, the concert brings together a distinguished lineup of artists who share a deep connection to Filipino musical traditions. Espiritu is joined by award-winning soprano Stefanie Quintin-Avila and celebrated pianist Najib Ismail, creating a program that highlights both vocal and instrumental excellence. The evening also pays tribute to Ambassador Tomas C. Benitez, whose passion for kundiman helped preserve its place in Filipino cultural life.

At the heart of the concert is a curated selection drawn from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ newly recorded 13-track archive. This project, developed in collaboration with the Manila Chamber Orchestra Foundation, marks a significant step in digitally preserving Filipino classics performed by some of the country’s finest voices. The repertoire traces the evolution of kundiman, from its roots in patriotic expression to its transformation into zarzuela, love songs, and modern art music. Works by composers such as Nicanor Abelardo, Francisco Santiago, Constancio de Guzman, Ernani Cuenco, Levi Celerio, and Augusto Espino will be featured, offering a rich look at the musical figures who shaped the nation’s sound.

Espiritu, known for his performances on major international stages, arrives fresh from his title role in Prince Igor at the Munich Opera House. A recipient of the George London Award and the Scala Award at the Belvedere Competition in Vienna, he has built a global reputation for his powerful tone and commanding presence. His return to a repertoire rooted in Filipino tradition gives this concert a distinct sense of homecoming. Quintin-Avila, recognized for her clarity and range, reunites with Espiritu following their acclaimed collaboration in 2024. She continues to gain international attention, with an upcoming appearance at the Gleam International Early Music Festival in Belgium. Completing the trio is Ismail, whose career across Europe, Asia, and Australia has been marked by a strong commitment to promoting Filipino composers, making him a fitting musical anchor for the evening.

Beyond the performance, the concert carries a deeper purpose. All proceeds will support the MiraNila Conservation Program, which has been instrumental in restoring vulnerable artworks and is now focused on urgent structural repairs after severe flooding in 2025 affected the 94-year-old heritage house. The event offers audiences not only a chance to experience world-class music but also an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage.

Guests can expect an immersive evening that begins with registration and access to the gallery, accompanied by refreshments. Heritage house tours will be available in the early part of the program, offering a closer look at the site’s history and architecture. The concert itself runs from 6:30 PM to 8:10 PM with an intermission, followed by a meet and greet with the artists. Food and refreshments will continue to be available until the evening concludes.

Theater Review: Dulaang UP's "Ang Kaliitan ng Kasalukuyan"

Dulaang UP’s Ang Kaliitan ng Kasalukuyan takes on the familiar yet still urgent story of the overseas Filipino worker, using an intimate staging and a mix of theatrical forms to bring the experience closer to its audience. While the production succeeds in creating emotional access, it also shows some unevenness in how its ideas are carried through.

At the center is Sandino Martin as Bulan, who delivers a steady and sincere performance. He keeps the character grounded, especially in quieter moments where the weight of isolation is more felt than spoken. His portrayal becomes the anchor of the play, particularly when the material shifts between tones.

The staging works in the production’s favor. The intimate setup allows the audience to feel involved rather than just observing from a distance. Projections are used throughout and are generally well integrated, helping set the mood and context without taking attention away from the actors. These choices support the storytelling and give the play a strong visual identity.

The show also attempts to combine several disciplines, including musical elements, drama, puppetry, and advocacy. At its best, this mix adds variety and keeps the performance engaging. However, not all transitions feel smooth. Some segments stand out more than others, making the overall flow feel uneven at times. The versatility of the set helps bridge these shifts, but the structure can still feel fragmented.

The first part of the play is one of its stronger sections. It presents a relatable picture of an OFW returning home, from the frustration of traffic to the sudden closeness of family members. These moments are handled with warmth and familiarity, capturing the mix of comfort and tension that comes with going back to one’s roots. The sense of nostalgia is clear and effective, giving the audience an easy point of connection.

A key highlight is the exchange between Bulan and his older sister. Their dialogue is direct and emotionally charged, offering some of the most honest moments in the play. The sister’s lines carry insight and lived experience, and the tension between them feels real. This scene stands out because it is clear, focused, and grounded.

Ang Kaliitan ng Kasalukuyan raises important points about distance, family, and survival, but does not always sustain the same level of clarity across its runtime. It is at its strongest when it leans into simple, truthful moments rather than layered concepts.

The production runs until March 29 at the IBG-KAL Theater in UP Diliman.

Joining the lineup are Italian musicians Lorenzo Travaglini and Davide Semmarchi, representing Bosco Studio, whose contemporary neoclassical compositions blend classical piano traditions with modern cinematic textures. Their appearance marks their first visit to Asia, where they will not only perform but also engage with the local music community through cultural and educational initiatives.

FEU presents Pundaquit Virtuosi in "The Seven Last Words by Joseph Haydn" on March 31

Far Eastern University through the FEU Center for the Arts presents the Pundaquit Virtuosi from Zambales in Haydn's Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ with reflections in between in the FEU Chapel surrounded by The Stations of the Cross, a National Cultural Treasure by National Artist Carlos "Botong" Francisco.

The FEU Center for the Arts (FCA) continues its Tutti Concert Series with Tutti Strings, featuring the Pundaquit Virtuosi from Zambales in a special Lenten performance of The Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ by Joseph Haydn.

Presented in partnership with the FEU Campus Ministry, this free concert will take place on March 31 at 5 PM at the FEU Chapel, offering the Tamaraw community a moving musical reflection in preparation for Holy Week.

Founded in the quiet coastal village of Pundaquit, San Antonio, Zambales, the Pundaquit Virtuosi is led by internationally renowned Filipino violinist Coke Bolipata. Through his vision, music education has become accessible to children in the community, transforming lives and nurturing young talents through classical training and performance opportunities. Reflecting on the significance of the featured piece, Bolipata shares, “Haydn’s Seven Last Words is a rare piece of music: one that invites stillness. It does not dramatize Christ’s suffering so much as meditates on it.”

Composed in 1786, Joseph Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ is a deeply contemplative masterpiece originally written for Good Friday services in Cádiz, Spain. The work consists of seven sonatas, each reflecting one of Christ’s final utterances on the Cross, framed by a solemn introduction and a powerful concluding movement. Revered for its emotional depth and spiritual intensity, the piece invites listeners into quiet meditation through expressive melodies and profound musical storytelling.
