Sometimes, it's about timing. Sometimes, it's about distance. And sometimes, it's about making difficult choices for the people you love, even when it hurts.

Produced by YPC Stage, Mapanakit! Mga Dulang Bittersweet is a moving collection of three one-act plays written by Eljay Castro Deldoc and directed by BJ Borja. Drawing inspiration from contemporary settings and regional Philippine literature, the production celebrates stories rooted in different experiences while giving them new life on the Manila stage.

Even before the curtain rises, the production already knows how to set the mood. The moment you step inside the IBG-KAL Theater, you're welcomed by a playlist of emotional hits from the '80s and early '90s. It instantly creates a nostalgic atmosphere that almost made me want to grab a microphone and sing along while reading the lyrics projected on the walls. It's a simple but effective touch that eases the audience into an evening of stories about love, longing, and heartbreak.

One of the things I appreciated most was seeing artists from Biñan coming over to tell these stories. In a theater scene often dominated by highly commercialized Metro Manila productions, Mapanakit! reminds us that some of the country's most compelling stories continue to come from the regions. More than simply entertaining audiences, the production opens a window to voices and narratives that deserve to be seen and heard by a wider audience.

The first play follows Sir Banakon and his student Hershey Mae, portrayed by Ross Pesigan and Jury Sanchez, respectively.

I'll admit that I was a little conflicted during the opening scenes. I found myself frustrated by Hershey Mae's apparent indifference toward the mysterious disappearance of her classmates. Instead of immediately connecting with the story, I was distracted by the stream of scientific theories and concepts that almost felt like watching an episode of The Big Bang Theory.

Thankfully, everything changes once Sir Banakon begins sharing his own perspective. His quiet compassion slowly reveals the emotional heart of the story, reminding me that this is, after all, a love story—just not in the way I initially expected. Once I embraced that idea, the play became much more rewarding.

Its biggest takeaway? Sometimes love doesn't demand immediate answers. Sometimes, it simply waits for the right time.

Ilihan at Kalingaw

The second play stars Gab Pangilinan as Ilihan and Euden Moje as Kalingaw.

This story reminded me of Filipino classics like Florante at Laura, where love is tested by circumstances much bigger than the lovers themselves. Coming from different worlds becomes Ilihan and Kalingaw's greatest obstacle, making their journey both beautiful and heartbreaking.

Among the three plays, this one offers the richest cultural experience. The production thoughtfully incorporates regional traditions into its staging, creating a visually engaging performance that celebrates Bicolano heritage without losing sight of its intimate love story.

Gab Pangilinan shines in the role, delivering her lines naturally in Bicolano before translating them into Filipino, allowing audiences unfamiliar with the language to remain emotionally connected without sacrificing authenticity.

I especially loved the ending. Rather than forcing a conventional happily-ever-after, the play immortalizes Ilihan and Kalingaw's love through poetry, suggesting that while people may be separated by fate, love can continue to live on through words and memory.

The final play features Phi Palmos as France, Loudette Barias as Kris, and Kokoy de Santos as Noel.

Without question, this is the most mapanakit story of the trilogy.

France and Kris share a friendship that immediately feels genuine. It's the kind of relationship many people can relate to, especially those who've experienced how years of closeness can slowly unravel because of a single life-changing circumstance. In this case, that circumstance comes in as Noel.

The first half is light, funny, and heartwarming. It lulls you into believing you're watching a feel-good story before the emotional shift arrives. You may already have an idea of where the story is heading, but knowing doesn't soften its impact. Jolina Magdangal songs were also delightfully intentionally integrated in the background that amplifies the emotions in each scene.

Maybe it's just me, but weddings always carry a different emotional weight. Here, the wedding becomes more than a celebration. It becomes a space where forgiveness, acceptance, and impossible choices collide.

When France finally says, "Ganito ang pinangarap kong kasal," the line lands exactly as it should. The performances make you hope that love will somehow find a way, only for the story to challenge your own values about commitment, family, and choosing the life that ultimately makes the most sense—even if it comes with heartbreak.

A special mention also goes to Kokoy de Santos. Despite this being only his second theatrical production, he carries himself with remarkable professionalism and confidence on stage. He blends seamlessly with seasoned theater actors, never trying to outshine them but instead serving the story and his fellow performers. It's exciting to see him continue exploring theater, and I genuinely hope this won't be his last. He has the potential to take on even more diverse and challenging roles in future productions.

It's complicated. It's painful. And it's the story that stayed with me the longest.

Mapanakit! Mga Dulang Bittersweet succeeds because it trusts the power of sincere storytelling. Rather than relying on spectacle, it allows its characters and the emotions they carry to take center stage. Each play explores a different kind of love: one that patiently waits, one that lives on through poetry, and one that asks us to let go for the sake of others.

Beyond the stories themselves, I admire what YPC Stage has accomplished by bringing regional literature and artists to Manila audiences. It's a meaningful reminder that Philippine theater extends far beyond the capital and that our regional languages, cultures, and stories deserve the same spotlight as mainstream productions.

I watched Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 4: Oh Sh*t! It's Live! last July 12 at the PETA Theater Center with my niece, and we were both genuinely excited. Seeing the franchise come alive on stage—led by the one and only Eugene Domingo—already felt like an event we didn't want to miss.

From the very first few minutes, the show proves that it's incredibly timely. It wastes no time throwing jokes about current events and personalities, including Alex Eala and Hidilyn Diaz, with Eugene Domingo delivering the punchlines in a way only she can. She has this unmatched ability to make even the boldest jokes land effortlessly, reminding everyone why she's one of the country's greatest performers.

One thing I immediately appreciated was how naturally the production introduced its cast. If you're not a regular theatergoer, the opening makes it easy to get to know everyone. Their backgrounds, achievements, and recent credentials are smoothly woven into the show, making every performer feel familiar before the story even fully unfolds.

And then came the Ugeng-gengs.

Forget the usual teenage gangs you imagine hanging around Manila malls. These ones are proudly from Alabang, and that alone already tells you what kind of comedy you're about to get. Eugene Domingo, as the self-appointed "mother" of the group, places herself on a hilarious pedestal of superiority. She's loud, unapologetic, over-the-top, and completely entertaining. Every scene with them was pure fun.

Fans of the original Septic Tank movies will also love how the production continues its tradition of poking fun at acting styles. The first film introduced unforgettable jokes about "TV Patrol acting," "elevator acting," and "as is, where is" acting. This fourth installment levels it up by taking playful shots at different schools of acting and theater institutions.

Dulaang UP and PETA—both closely associated with Eugene Domingo—become part of the jokes. Repertory Philippines, known for producing internationally recognized talents like Lea Salonga, also gets its moment. But the biggest laugh for me came from the introduction of the completely absurd and brilliantly original "Four Corners Acting." I honestly couldn't stop laughing. It was one of those jokes that's so ridiculous, yet somehow makes perfect sense within the show's world.

What surprised me most, however, was how the comedy slowly transformed into something much bigger.

The play offers a sharp satire of the Philippine theater industry. It asks a question that many probably haven't stopped to think about: Are we really experiencing the Golden Age of Philippine Theater, or just the Golden Age of Metro Manila Theater?

As someone who lives in Metro Manila, I honestly found myself agreeing. Most of the productions that receive attention, praise, and media coverage happen within Metro Manila, while many theater communities outside the capital remain largely unnoticed.

The show also doesn't spare its audience.

It cleverly points out how theater has sometimes become a badge of being "cultured," where watching plays turns into bragging rights instead of a genuine appreciation of the art. I loved that the production wasn't afraid to challenge everyone—artists, producers, audiences, and even itself. Nobody was safe, and that's exactly why the satire worked.

More importantly, it reminds us of what theater is really supposed to be.

Beyond entertainment, theater has always existed to educate, challenge perspectives, question power, and fight for something bigger than itself. The show asks whether that original purpose is slowly getting lost beneath commercial success and spectacle. It raises uncomfortable questions while making you laugh, which is exactly what great satire should do.

By the second act, the production becomes even more ambitious.

The classic play Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas by Aurelio Tolentino is transformed into a grand musical that hilariously drifts farther and farther away from its original material. Watching the creative process completely spiral out of control becomes one of the funniest parts of the show. Every cast member commits fully to the chaos, making each unexpected turn even more enjoyable.

There are also technical and staging surprises that you simply won't fully appreciate from photos or videos. The production uses areas and stage elements that many theater shows don't normally maximize, keeping the audience constantly curious about what might happen next.

By the time the curtain fell, I honestly wished I could watch it again.

Unfortunately, every performance is already sold out. If the production ever gets an extension, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another ticket. Although after everything Eugene Domingo goes through in this installment, who knows if she'd still want to climb back into the septic tank one more time?

One thing is certain: Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 4: Oh Sh*t! It's Live! isn't just a comedy. It's a love letter to Philippine theater, a fearless critique of the industry, and a reminder of why live performances continue to matter. It makes you laugh, makes you think, and occasionally makes you question whether you've also become part of the joke.

ANG LIKNAYAN NG ATING MGA KATAWAN
Hershey Mae (Jury Sanchez) sneaks into the school’s chemistry lab under the pretense of conducting an experiment, but she is really there to confront her teacher, Sir Banakon (Ross Pesigan). He has rejected her controversial research paper, arguing that its methods and conclusions are unscientific and dangerous. The paper has already stirred chaos in the school, as several students took its claims seriously—leading to a suicide attempt, a viral fight, and a missing student.

Sir Banakon believes the study must be dismissed before more harm is done. But Hershey Mae insists that her research is grounded in real observation and experience. What she is trying to prove, above all, is that some truths—especially about love—cannot simply be invalidated.

Ilihan at Kalingaw, in a mythical realm, Ilihan (Gab Pangilinan), the poet-historian of the Buringkantada tribe, is tasked with recording the stories their elders deem worthy of memory.

When the council discovers she has secretly written love poems for Kalingaw (Euden Moje) —a man she is forbidden to love—she is summoned to face punishment. Kalingaw urges her to flee before it is too late, but Ilihan refuses. She believes love, too, deserves a place in their history. By standing by her words, Ilihan challenges the tribe’s rules about what can be remembered—and risks paying the price for a love story they refuse to acknowledge.

France (Phi Palmos) and Noel (Kokoy de Santos) have been a couple since college, keeping their relationship quiet while maintaining the appearance of normalcy around others. Their closest friend, Kris (Loudette Barias), has long been their confidante and constant third wheel, witnessing the sweetness and intimacy of their private love story. For years, the three navigate life together while carefully protecting the secret. The balance begins to break when one of them decides to follow society’s expectations of masculinity and a conventional life. He was last seen on stage in The Sandbox Collective’s Lungs.

First Lady of the Philippine Theater Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo takes on the roles of the Doctor, Therapist, and Mom. Alongside her is King of Philippine Theater Audie Gemora who will appear as Paul and Dad.

Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo is a multi-awarded actress with extensive stage credits. Her iconic roles include Eva Peron in Evita, Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Fantine in Les Misérables, Maria in West Side Story and The Sound of Music, and Miss Hannigan in Annie, among many others. Her onscreen work includes the television series One Good Day and films such as Ang Larawan and EDJOP. Most recently, she played Maria Callas in Masterclass and Adult Woman in Spring Awakening.

Audie Gemora’s name is synonymous with the performing arts. Hailed the King of Philippine Musical Theater, he has appeared in over 70 plays, spanning Broadway and West End productions to original Filipino works. His acclaimed performances have earned him major accolades, including Gawad Philstage awards for Sweeney Todd and The Producers, and a Philstage Gawad Buhay for La Cage Aux Folles. He is the current President of PHILSTAGE. He recently starred in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Little Shop of Horrors, and Spring Awakening.

PETA Opens “Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 4,” Bringing the Franchise’s Signature Satire to Live Theater

After months of anticipation, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) officially opens the first live theatrical installment of the iconic satirical franchise, “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 4: Oh Sht! It’s Live sa Cheter!”, running from June 19 to August 16, 2026 at the PETA Theater Center.

The production embraces everything audiences have come to love about the “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” universe: humor, larger-than-life personalities, outrageous situations, and a meta look at the messy business of making art. The result is a theatrical experience that is hilarious, self-aware, and chaotic.

At the center of the story is a play within a play—a wildly ambitious adaptation of Aurelio Tolentino’s “Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas,” one of the most significant works in Philippine theater, first staged in 1903. Somehow, against all odds and perhaps better judgment, it finds itself inside the world of “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank,” where questions of power, resistance, and revolution are refracted through celebrity, spectacle, and theatrical chaos.

Caught in the middle of it all is Eugene Domingo, who recruits the “Ugeng-gengs” (a troupe of aspiring performers personally recruited by Eugene), rallies an eclectic team of collaborators, and pushes the project far beyond the limits of practicality. Visionary, charismatic, exasperating, and impossible to ignore, she becomes the driving force behind a production that threatens to spin gloriously out of control just as she tries harder and harder to keep it under her full control.

Yet the production deliberately resists easy or didactic conclusions. As playwright Chris Martinez explains: “The play doesn’t try to resolve that. It just puts it onstage.” The production invites audiences to laugh at them, wrestle with them, and continue the conversation long after the curtain falls.

That philosophy has always been central to the “Septic Tank” franchise. Previous installments challenged audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about independent filmmaking, commercial cinema, and historical revisionism. This latest chapter continues that tradition by exposing the tensions within contemporary theater and the society it reflects.

As Marlon Rivera, director of the first three “Septic Tank” installments and now a cast member in the fourth, puts it: “Once the tyrant is expelled and the star is covered in shit, does the audience walk out clean, or are they left holding the ticket stubs of their own complicity?”

Set during a night of drinking among friends, Boxstage Manila opens its new theater season with Tagay Para Sa Ex, a stage production about love, breakups, and the honest conversations that often surface only after a few drinks.

Written and directed by Dudz Teraña, president of Boxstage Manila and Senior Artist Teacher of the Philippine Educational Theater Association, the play explores how people navigate relationships after they have ended and how notions of love evolve with age, experience, and the world around them.

The story unfolds inside a low-rise condominium during a drinking session among five friends: Mark, a BPO team leader; Liz, a freelance designer; Benj, a senior marketing officer; Mich, a virtual assistant; and Poch, an events coordinator. As the night progresses, the characters begin to question their own emotional maturity, confront their differing moral views, and reflect on the choices they have made in love and in life.

In an era when relationships are often shaped by technology, social expectations, and online validation, Tagay Para Sa Ex presents situations that many people can relate to.

The characters discuss commitment, boundaries, ambition, and loneliness in ways that feel familiar, especially to audiences navigating modern dating, work culture, and digital connections.

Loosely inspired by What We Talk About When We Talk About Love by Raymond Carver, the play focuses less on romance and more on reflection. It invites audiences to sit with the characters as they speak honestly, sometimes awkwardly, about love that has changed or ended.

Some stories are written. Others are stolen and celebrated by the very people who should have known better.

2TinCans Philippines and The Kabilin Center present Ang Kawatan (The Thief), the second production of Kulukabildo II: Stories in Direct Light, running June 27 and 28 at The Kabilin Center, Eduardo Aboitiz Street, Tinago, Cebu City.

Directed by 2TinCans Theatre Company member, Vanessa Fe, and written by journalist and playwright, Maverick Avila, Ang Kawatan is a tragicomedy set during a live televised book launch — Open Book with Frankie, a fading cultural program.

Celebrated novelist Mateo Robles (played by Dave Feril) takes his seat across from veteran host Frankie (played by Lord Lawrence Latonio), ready to tell the story behind his acclaimed bestselling book. What he does not expect to walk into the studio and refuse to be invisible is Ana (played by Judee Kriselle Rallos), a young woman whose trauma he silenced, repackaged, and sold as fiction.

What unfolds is a public confrontation that cracks open the creative community it is set in, exposing the fault lines of complicity, victim-blaming, and the ease with which those who control the narrative can turn a stolen truth into a prize-winning lie.

Fe notes that this story is not new. It has always been there, just repackaged the same way Mateo repackaged Ana's truth into a prize-winning book.

“Tragedy doesn't come in loudly. It lives in the quiet moments: a community that keeps applauding, people who knew and said nothing. I didn't want to put a survivor's trauma on display. I wanted people to watch this and recognize themselves not as strangers to this story, but as someone who has watched another person be exploited and stayed quiet. It's the perfect setting to show that the live show was the one place Mateo cannot hide. However, the same system that exposed him is the one that never protected Ana,” Fe said.

The production marks Fe's directorial debut, a milestone made more meaningful by the story she has chosen to tell. She brings to this production both a director's precision and a woman's intimate understanding of what it means when a survivor's truth falls into the wrong hands.

Ang Kawatan is also the result of many years of creative partnership. Fe and playwright Avila first developed the story in college — a shared conviction that has taken three years to find its stage.

2TinCans Producing Artistic Director, Sarah Mae Enclona-Henderson, hopes that audiences leave Ang Kawatan carrying with them not only memories of a compelling performance, but also a renewed sense of curiosity, awareness, and responsibility.

“If the play encourages even one person to see an issue differently, ask a difficult question, or take meaningful action, then it has fulfilled its purpose,” Enclona-Henderson said.

Ang Kawatan arrives as the second installment of Kulukabildo II: Stories in Direct Light, a monthly theatre series running April through November 2026. Rooted in the Bisaya concept of kulukabildo — an informal exchange, the kind of honest conversation that happens when people feel safe enough to speak freely. The series features the distinct visions of eight emerging Cebuano directors under the 2TinCans Directors Program. The series opened in March with The Second Eulogy, directed by Mario Alcoriza.

Completing the cast featuring 2TinCans Theatre Company members are Shiella Pestaño-Gemperoa as Gab, Shane Rennel Ayong as Kirby, and Grant Bacaltos as Patrick. The production is supported by stage manager Regina Binueza.

As a hub for Cebuano culture and community, The Kabilin Center continues to serve as the home for stories that demand to be told — narratives that do not ask for comfort but ask instead for honesty, attention, and the willingness to sit with what is true.

The Italian Film Festival returns to Manila from June 26 to July 1, 2026, presenting six acclaimed contemporary Italian films, including the latest works by internationally renowned directors Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty, Youth) and Paolo Genovese (Perfect Strangers).

Organized by the Embassy of Italy in Manila in collaboration with Elephant Pictures, Cineforum Robert Bresson, the Philippine-Italian Association (PIA), and Shangri-La Plaza's Red Carpet Cinemas, the festival continues its mission of promoting Italian culture and strengthening ties between Italy and the Philippines through the universal language of cinema.

Known for its visceral, unsparing look at addiction, recovery, and the intoxicating allure of escapism, People, Places, and Things centers on an actress whose life has spun wildly out of control.

The intimate stage reading will bring the raw, electric emotion of Macmillan’s brilliant dialogue to the absolute forefront, guided by Jose-Gregorio’s fresh directorial vision.

The Manila Symphony Orchestra Foundation, Inc., together with Standard Insurance as presenter, and EastWest Bank and PAGCOR as co-presenters, proudly presents In Pursuit of Excellence: Celebration – The MSO Centennial Season, Concert III: 80 Years of Filipino-American Friendship. Held in partnership with Bagong Pilipinas, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and The Metropolitan Theater, this special concert commemorates eight decades of enduring friendship between the Philippines and the United States through an evening of world-class music and cultural exchange. The concert takes place on July 4, 2026, Saturday, at 7:30 PM at the Manila Metropolitan Theater.

As part of its Centennial Season, the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) commemorates a landmark event in Philippine history. Eighty years ago, on July 5, 1946, following the inauguration of the Republic of the Philippines, the MSO presented a Gala Symphony Concert at the Rizal Memorial Stadium as part of the national celebrations marking Philippine independence.

This year's program brings together works by Filipino and American composers whose music reflects the artistic exchanges and cultural connections that have shaped both nations over the past eight decades.

Opening the evening is former MSO Assistant Conductor Col. Antonino Buenaventura's prize-winning composition, "Youth", which received its premiere during the 1946 MSO Gala Symphony Concert. Conducted by the composer himself, the work portrays youth as "the epitome of vigor, energy, and love, standing at the threshold of life's journey". "Dedicated to the youth of the land whose faith in democracy and freedom has been kept inviolate even unto the gates of death," the piece captures the optimism, resilience, and aspirations of a nation emerging from war.

The program continues with Lucio San Pedro's "Concerto in D Minor" for Violin and Orchestra. Recognized as the first complete violin concerto written by a Filipino composer, the work was composed in 1948 as San Pedro's final output upon completing his composition studies at the Juilliard School in New York. The concerto reflects the educational exchanges that have connected Filipino and American music while occupying an important place in the development of Philippine classical music. This work will be performed by violinist Jeanne Marquez, a recent graduate of the Juilliard School with a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance.

Representing the American tradition are Artie Shaw's “Concerto for Clarinet”, featuring Jeanne's older brother, Jason Marquez, a Filipino-American principal clarinetist in Michigan and Texas; and George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture for orchestra", arranged by Robert Russell Bennett. Together, these works showcase the breadth of American music, drawing from jazz, popular music, and the symphonic tradition.

16th Gawad Buhay! Awards Nominations

The 16th Gawad Buhay! Awards nominations were announced on May 26, with Tanghalang Pilipino’s (TP) “Kisapmata” and The Sandbox Collective’s “Side Show” leading the tally with 14 nods apiece.

“Kisapmata,” a new adaptation of the eponymous 1981 film directed by Mike de Leon, was nominated for every category it was eligible for: all five performance categories, six design categories, direction and production of a play, and original script (penned by Guelan Varela-Luarca with the TP Actors Company).

“Side Show,” the 1997 Broadway musical about a pair of conjoined twins in vaudeville-era America, scored nominations for its four alternating actresses who played the twins, and was the only production recognized in all seven design categories.

Full House Theater Company’s “Shrek the Musical,” the 2008 Broadway adaptation of the acclaimed animated film from 2001, landed 12 nominations, while Barefoot Theatre Collaborative’s “We Aren’t Kids Anymore,” a song cycle by Drew Gasparini, followed with nine.

All 18 eligible Philstage productions that opened between January 1 to December 31, 2025 garnered a nomination. These nominations were drawn from a pool of 155 citations determined through four separate meetings by a 13-person independent jury of theater practitioners, academics, reviewers, and journalists. For the first time since 2015, every competitive category had a recipient for a citation. Among the 78 nominated individuals, 25 (or 32%) are first-time nominees.

The following productions were co-produced with non-Philstage member companies: “Come From Away” (Stages Production Specialists, Inc. with GMG Productions), “Kaliwaan” (Stages Production Specialists, Inc. with MusicArtes, Inc.), “Nobody Is Home” (Philippine Educational Theater Association with Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater), and “Via Dolorosa” (The Necessary Theatre with WHYNot Manila).

The 16th Gawad Buhay! Awards ceremonies will be held on July 28, 2026 at Aliw Theater, Pasay City.

In celebration of National Heritage Month and Flores de Mayo, The Manila Hotel, in partnership with Designers Circle Philippines, unveils “Flores de Primavera Y Filipiniana,” a captivating fashion exhibit at the Grand Dame of the Philippines.

Inspired by the idyllic beauty of the Filipiniana, the exhibit highlights the vibrant intersection of culture and creativity. The collection presents an exquisite blend of Terno and Maria Clara designs, influenced by the radiant hues and festive spirit of Flores de Mayo, rightly regarded as the “Queen of Philippine Festivals.”

Selected members of Designers Circle Philippines have transformed the storied Grand Lobby and Art Gallery into what the organization describes as an “effervescent Eden of floral Filipiniana,” where heritage fashion takes center stage amid the grandeur of the historic hotel.
