Hyapatia Lee was born Vicky Lynch on 11 November 1962, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Although she is three quarters white and only one-quarter Cherokee Indian, she identified with her Native American ancestry. When she was nine, Hyapatia’s mother married an architect named Don, who moved both mother and daughter into the city. “Don and I did not hit it off right away… He was the arrogant, pushy, sometimes out-and-out rude, type… He was always right, and his word was absolute and final. He enforced his rule with his fists. My weak, small-framed mother had no confidence in herself at all and even though she thought his manner was becoming more and more abusive, she could not protest… She didn’t want to rock the boat.”

“I remember one rainy night I couldn’t sleep. I was afraid of the thunder and lightening. I was scared and asked my mom if I could sleep with her and Don. I was not allowed to close the bathroom door when taking a shower or bath, and he would always come in and stand there, pretending to do something at the sink, whenever I bathed.”

The situation was made worse because Hyapatia’s mother was training to be a surgical nurse, and was therefore often away at school. “Whenever my mother wasn’t home, Don would come up from behind me, grab my breasts and comment on how big they were getting. He’d ask me what size bra I wore now and far had I gone with the boys. Was I a slut yet? Did I let any of my boyfriends touch me there, and he would touch me there as an example. Over the next year sexual and physical abuse became routine, with Don often hitting both Hyapatia and her mother. One night Hyapatia returned home to find her mother “worse than I had ever seen her. Her face was bruised and her eyes were almost swollen shut. I could hardly recognise her.” This proved to be he turning point. Her mother took the children and left home, moving into a beach house with a friend of hers named Charlene. Charlene had four children and also just left an abusive marriage. Although Mary and Don divorced, Hyapatia did not find family life any easier. “My mom was still trying to ‘find herself’ and it appeared she thought she had gotten lost in the bedroom because that was where she and Charlene kept locking themselves… I knew what they were doing in the bedroom all the time. Even if my mother didn’t want to admit it to me. I had seen them in bed together. It didn’t upset me that she was having sex with another woman. I was only angry that it took her away from having a relationship with me because she was always too busy.” At the age of 14, after running away from home a couple of times, Hyapatia decided to save up enough money to return to Indianapolis, eventually moving in with her grandmother again.

As a teenager in Indianapolis, Hyapatia was sexually active but emotionally frail, drifting from one partner to the next. At 15 she fell in love with an older man with whom she had a two-year relationship. "I worried about keeping his affection, so I figured, I better do this [give him a blowjob]… This guy and I did dinner together. I was 15 and he was about 28. We had been having sex regularly, and one of the times I just went down on him and surprised him. I was anxious at first, and too quick. He helped me. I planned to go to New York and try to make it on Broadway.” Once she got there though, she came face-to-face with the ‘casting couch’ and decided to return to Indianapolis. “I really had to find a way to make money”, so following the advice of a friend that already worked as a stripper, she decided to audition at the same club. “I had totally given up on the idea of my ever becoming a successful actress… It was time I made some money off of the enjoyment men got from my body… Why not take off my clothes and get paid $400 a week for what men had been taking from me all my life? It was good money.” Having just turned 18 she got the job and began working as a stripper at The Red Garter.

As a stripper she adopted the stage-name Hyapatia, which means ‘Similar to a cat’ in Cherokee. “There was something strangely ironic about the whole thing. I was terrified to go out in public, drive, talk to strangers, look people in the eye, and yet, Hyapatia felt in control and powerful when she snuck out onto a stage… The consistency of me stirring up lust and exercising my right not to have my body touched gave me a power and control over my life I had never known… They actually thought I was sexy! I couldn’t believe it.”

“I moved back in with my grandmother again and continued to dance. She did not like my job, but she understood and even helped me sew my dance costumes.” While working as a stripper she decided to enter the Miss Nude America contest that was taking place in Indiana. “With all the other beautiful girls there I didn’t think they’d waste their time on me. You can imagine my surprise when I won the contest. I thought it was rigged, and later on someone confirmed my suspicions. The club I worked for bought me the title.” A few weeks later the 18-year old Hyapatia also entered the Miss Nude Galaxy contest. “This place was far bigger and more legitimate… There were over 70 contestants and the audience was three times as big… I was surprised that I won again.”

Bud Bennett was a friend of her therapist and helped in her recovery. “For three months he took me out, came with me to work and dropped me off at home without even holding hands. This was so strange… Was Bud gay? By now, I was falling in love with him… I actually wanted him to kiss me, hold me, and perhaps even make love to me. Before I had met Bud, I was beginning to think I’d never feel that way about a man.” She would later claim: “I was like a rose bud that had opened too early. I had to shut down for a while. Then with Bud, I opened up again." A year later the two of them decided to get married, and in accordance to Cherokee tradition, he took her surname.

“For a while I continued to dance at The Red Garter but it became more and more obvious that Bud considered my work to be a threat. Somehow he thought I liked turning guys on for an ulterior motive other than my ego. So I agreed to quit. Bud quit his job too, and got a better one with a finance company.” Financial problems, however, soon led her back to The Red Garter, and touring the lucrative US strip club circuit. She persuaded Bud to join her on the road, promising to support him herself. “I did not feel safe anywhere in the world except onstage. I felt I needed him and to me it was a fair trade at the time.”

Bud reluctantly agreed, later claiming: “My mom thought I was acting stupidly. She said I was just facilitating my then wife’s selfish agenda and should care more about myself than I was… I met Hyapatia Lee, fell in love, got married and helped her pursue a career in adult entertainment. My educational background proved useful… and I seemed to have a knack for people management.”

In 1981 Hyapatia entered the Miss Nude Galaxy contest for a second time. “It was fabulous for my career when I won again! I made my first appearance in Playboy’s February 1982 issue in ‘The Year In Sex’ review and on the Playboy channel in America Uncovered. I even got offered a part in an adult film, but I did not take the offer seriously.”

Things began to change for Hyapatia and Bud in 1982. “Porn stars like Kandi Barbour, Lee Carol and Desiree Cousteau were touring movie theatres and doing their rendition of a strip act. Marilyn Chambers and Seka were doing it too… After one of these ladies had gone through a particular circuit, it would take months before customers would venture back into the theatre… We had reached an impasse. The money we were spending on the road was not worth the profit… [Bud] suggested that we might be in the wrong end of the business, that maybe we should consider making a few movies. Then we could demand the same kind of money these stars were making.”

They moved to California, and in October 1982, one month before her twentieth birthday, Hyapatia’s first soft core photo layout appeared in the adult magazine Swank. Over the next few weeks Hyapatia modelled for numerous other magazines, including Penthouse, before finally signing an exclusive contract with adult company Caribbean Films, and agreeing to appear in her first porn movie, ‘The Young Like It Hot’ (1982). Although this was her first release, the first sex scene she ever did in front of the camera was with Randy West in ‘Naughty Girls Need Love Too’ (1983). According to Hyapatia, Caribbean “was to let me shoot this movie provided they would not release it until after ‘The Young Like It Hot’ came out.”

“I had a fairly small part and was only to work for two days. Bud’s mom also lived in the city [San Francisco] and she came down to say hello. She was a very understanding mother who knew exactly what was going on… I was worried about the sex scene now only because of Bud. I was afraid he’d flip and get angry or jealous… It started with a slow, seductive strip while Randy lay eagerly in bed. Things were going very smoothly. I looked over at Bud who smiled approvingly. Then came time for the actual sex. I followed Ed’s directions as Randy spread my legs and began to go down on me. I looked for Bud, but he was nowhere to be seen… I was riding on top of Randy now, trying to hurry the scene along so I could find out why Bud wasn’t on the set like he was supposed to be… When the scene was over, I searched for Bud and found him looking for me. It seems he was forcefully taken aside by two apes that explained that it would be better if he stepped off set as a precaution. They said the director thought he would lose it and ruin the scene. We were livid!”

Hyapatia’s next two films were ‘The Young Like It Hot’ and ‘Sweet Young Things’. In the former she worked alongside Kay Parker, who “took me under her wing and gave me some advice about how I should not be afraid to stand up for myself and let no one push me beyond my boundaries.” Hyapatia would later state: “I never did any anal, or DP's or S&M. I never did anything that made me feel uncomfortable.” In both these films the only man she had sex with was Bud. “I thought it was quite a hoot that I got paid for having sex with my husband. I was totally relaxed and found it exciting.”

Once the films were being released, people started to recognise Hyapatia in public. “I was in shock… Bud gave me a lecture on anonymity. He said that I should’ve known I would have no more private life when I started making these movies. I really didn’t think that many people watched them… People started to recognise me in restaurants and on the streets… At first it was nice, but then it got to be a scary invasion of privacy.”

“The editor for Oui magazine, Peter Wolf, had a friend named Alexis X… One night, Peter, Alexis, Ron Jeremy and his girlfriend and I all went to [the swingers club] Plato’s Retreat… Alexis asked me to dance with her because she didn’t want to get hit on and I agreed… some guy came up and asked her if she was Alexis X. He had seen her movies… She started to feel a need to live up to her reputation and before I knew it, she was stripping on the dancefloor right in front of me. That’s when the guy recognised me. Before I could say much, Alexis was kissing and groping my body. Soon I was naked… It was very exciting to be the centre of attention.”

Hyapatia and Bud soon became renowned for their swinging and drug-taking lifestyle. She would later claim that the swinging stories were simply untrue rumours, "I have been monogamous most of my life outside of my movie work. I never participated in the lifestyle. It was just a job." Bud himself contradicts this: "After Hyapatia and I had been in the business three years, we became monogamous. Hyapatia had sex with other guys when we were married because it was her job. The roles required it.” In other words, it was not until Hyapatia retired in 1986 that her swinging lifestyle ended.

People that knew them in the early 1980’s confirm this. Porn actor Jerry Butler recalls in his autobiography how he “met Hyapatia a few years ago in Chicago at the Consumer Electronics Show. She and her husband Bud invited me up to their hotel room. We talked as she sat there crocheting. I knew they were swingers and was getting tense because Bud kept suggesting that I fuck his wife – with him watching… Lying on the bed, Bud finally told me very bluntly, ‘Maybe you’d like to screw my wife. But I normally like to eat the guy’s ass out while he fucks her.’ My sneakers practically tied themselves, and I ran back to my hotel!”

Another porn actor, Tim Connolly, had a similar experience: “Kelly Nichols and I met Bud Lee with Hyapatia Lee… Bud was just a porn star husband. He was trying to push us into swinging with him. At that point Kelly and I had done some swinging and weren’t that interested. I don’t know why because boy, in retrospect, the whole concept of me fucking Hyapatia Lee and Kelly Nichols sounds pretty good. But at the time I think I was turned off by Bud’s suitcase pimp attitude. Kelly obviously didn’t want to sleep with him. And that’s a big part of it, you know? No matter how much you want to get involved, if your partner doesn’t want to fuck the guy, then…”

According to Bud: “For a long time I struggled with whether I was a loser or not. Hyapatia told me, ‘Don't get a job. I need you or I can't do this job.’ It was excruciating to me to be what some producers call a ‘suitcase pimp’ – a guy who's willing to accept that his wife or girlfriend fucks other men because it makes a lot of dough, but they don't like it, so they put her down for it. But they won't call her a slut unless they're really mad at her.”

During the early 1980’s, the US porn industry was awash with cocaine; Hyapatia and Bud were no exception, and it was not until 1985 that they finally quit the habit. She later said: "It was taking over our lives... One day we looked at each other and said 'this is stupid. We are spending money on something that, by weight, is more expensive than gold. ' And we quit.”

Hyapatia was very selective with films, so unlike her peers Ginger Lynn, Amber Lynn, or Traci Lords, she did not make that many movies. The ones she did make though, were usually good. During her first three years in the porn industry, Hyapatia only made seven films: ‘Naughty Girls Need Love Too’, ‘The Young Like It Hot’, ‘Sweet Young Things’, Hyapatia Lee’s Body Girls’, ‘Hyapatia Lee’s Let’s Get Physical’, ‘Hyapatia Lee’s Tasty’ and ‘The Ribald Tales Of Canterbury’. After each film was released she would tour the country’s strip club circuit as an established porn star. As is usually the case she would make much more money stripping than by actually making the films. Nevertheless, the arrangement was putting a strain on their marriage. “I was rather fed up with Bud treating me like a workhorse. He wanted me working as often as possible, regardless of my mental or physical health… I never cheated on Bud behind his back, but I sure did dream about it. There was never a chance, even if I had wanted to follow through. He was always there, constantly by my side.”

According to Bud, “I think I felt as though I was not doing the best thing for me during the first couple of years. Then I found a place in this career she [Hyapatia] had chosen, I became more and more comfortable with what was happening in my life… I was able to fulfil a young man’s fantasy and become a director of adult movies.” One of the films he directed was ‘The Ribald Tales Of Canterbury’ (1985), one of the most expensive and successful porn movies ever made. In this well-made costume piece Bud films one of his wife’s best scenes as she has a torrid threesome with Mike Horner and Jon Martin.

By this point Hyapatia had become one of the biggest porn stars in the States. “I simply became the character I was portraying and when that character really wanted to have sex with someone, so did I. I was a blank slate to put a persona on and when I wasn’t acting, Hyapatia Lee was happy being whatever they expected of her. I felt like people liked me… I was interviewed, either in person or long distance over the phone, almost daily… I felt important and loved.” “I was fulfilling my fantasies, and not just my sexual ones, and getting paid for it. People were asking for my autograph and joining my fan club. It was hard for me to see how this business could be anything other than good.” Then in 1985 Caribbean closed down, and Hyapatia’s exclusive contract was terminated.

As a free agent she decided to sign with Essex. “We were to do 6 films in one year and get a total of $100,000. The offer seemed too good to be true and it took us about a month to decide to say yes. It might’ve been one of the worst moves we could have made.” After only three films, and feeling cheated financially by Essex, Hyapatia agreed to her contracts termination. “I was not happy taking $35,000 of what was originally a $100,000 contract, but there was no choice.”

By 1987 her marriage with Bud was beginning to fall apart. “It became apparent that this marriage was not going to last much longer. I didn’t think I would ever get married again if I left Bud, after all, who would want to be married to a Porno Star? I decided I was not going to leave this relationship empty handed. I wanted a baby first, and then I would divorce him. If things smoothed out by the time that happened, perhaps I would stay.” After three miscarriages she eventually gave birth to a baby boy. "When my first child was born, it took about nine months to adjust. The hardest part was to adjust to what other people's views of mothers and motherhood is, because it's a sacred space, as compared to other people's stereotypical views of what a porno star is."

In late 1988, she decided to return to the porn industry. “People were starting to forget about me… I needed to get something redent on the shelves in order to increase my demand on the dancing circuit.” According to Hyapatia, however, the script of her come-back movie, ‘Saddletramp’ “had been haphazardly butchered and the amount of money that was in the budget somehow never found it’s way to the set. The movie was thrown together and my only real sex scene shot uncommercially short. The total effect was devastating. It sucked!”

A few months later she signed an exclusive contract with Vivid. Although her figure and breasts had filled out as a result of childbirth, she was still stunningly attractive. “My first movie for Vivid was ‘Sleeping Beauty Aroused’ (1989) and I was very surprised how thrown together it was. The business had gone through quite a change in the last year.” “I was aware that I was, at the time, the only Native American working in the business. I was finding myself being put in more and more situations that exploited this and reinforced stereotypes… All this prompted me to get a new hairstyle. I cut and permed my hair. It was not a very popular decision, but I did not look as Indian.” Over the next two years she proceeded to star in some of her best films to date, such as ‘True Confessions Of Hyapatia Lee’ (1989) and ‘I Do’ (1989). Just as she was re-establishing herself as one of the top porn stars in the industry, Hyapatia became pregnant again. Once more she retired to give birth to her second son in 1990, only to return in 1991 just as insatiable as ever.

“Now that we had two children, I did not feel the need to be involved in the adult entertainment business anymore. In fact, I frankly wanted out. I felt it was now Bud’s turn to finally get a job and support his family… I was still under contract with Vivid to do a few more movies. Paul Thomas always directed the Vivid movie. At first he was fun to work with… With the passing of the years, his interest had waned. Each movie I made with him was worse than the one before.”

Although Bud directed one of her last great films, ‘Centerfold’, in 1993, their marriage had started to fall apart again. Their relationship had always been complex, with Hyapatia later saying: "Survivors of incest and rape need to feel in control. For our violations were not primarily sexual, but matters of power." According to Bud: "Hyapatia and I frequently reversed the roles. She'd roll on top of me, wrap a hand around my throat, slap me, and say: ‘Eat my pussy, and you better make me feel good. Understand?’ Coming on a woman's face is debasing to her, but if that's what she wants, it's ok. I'd rather have a woman swallow my cum because then I feel that she's experiencing me in every way. She's saying, 'I accept you Bud. I accept you fully.' Pissing inside someone after you come is interesting." He would also recall how she always called him ‘Daddy’ when they had sex, implying that she was searching for something missing during her turbulent childhood.

The power politics of the marriage also moved beyond the bedroom into the world of finance. “Bud felt anger and embarrassment at what we had done. He felt like the whole world was laughing at him. Everywhere we went people would ask questions like: ‘How can you let your wife do that?’ and ‘Don’t you fulfil her needs alone?’ He was also painfully aware that I earned every penny.” "When I met him, he was a secretary-treasurer for a finance group. Then we got into the business. He adjusted to my schedule. This business glamorises women, and pays them more than men. Our society is sexist. It expects men to be the major wage earner. And when he realizes that she makes more, it damages his self-esteem… He feels looked down upon... emasculated. The natural response is to get angry. He cannot beat up society, he can only get out his frustrations on something physical within his reach."

Hyapatia would later say that Bud first beat her in 1987. “We had both been drinking and the stress was at a peak… He was going on and on about how I was using him and everyone was laughing at him and how he had no respect or job of his own and therefore no money of his own. He grabbed my purse and struggled with me. After throwing me to the ground, he took the keys and got in the truck to leave. I went after him and he tried to run me over with the truck!” According to Hyapatia he repeated this half-a-dozen times over the next few years. Once in a hotel room in Canada, she claims Bud attempted to strangle her after another drunken argument. “I found Bud standing over mein my room with his hands around my throat. I pretended to pass out so he would think I was dead and finally let go, which he did.”

The final straw came in 1992 when Bud was talking on a public telephone as she waited beside the car for him to finish. A stranger recognised her, and came over asking for an autograph. “I talked to the man, was as polite as could be, signed his autograph and expected him to leave. Bud was still ignoring me. The man headed for his car and I thought I should get back in ours as quickly as possible. When I reached the door, I realised the man was right behind me… He stood by the door with me and I couldn’t believe it when he unzipped his pants and started to masturbate! It was dark and all, but we were on a pretty busy street, with lights and traffic going by. It didn’t seem to bother him. Eventually the guy came on my shoe and finally left. Bud was still talking on the phone… It was apparent that Bud would no longer protect me at all.” They finally divorced in 1993.

Hyapatia Lee continued making porn films throughout 1993, before eventually retiring later that year for the third and final time. Fear of AIDS and falling budgets were the main reason for her departure. "I thought people in the business would be more responsible [about AIDS]… Budgets plunged in the late '80s. Producers no longer sought to make movies... I remember one night we were working overtime... While lying on the bed, I looked up and saw lights exploding. I dove away just in time. I could've been badly burned... Everything became wall-to-wall... double anal... circus acts.” In 1993 she was inducted into the X-Rated Critics Organisation Hall Of Fame for porn stars, but by this point she had turned her back on the industry, describing it as “scummy... It's changed for the worst since the Golden Age."

According to Hyapatia she has no regrets about her past: “[Porn] did help me become more at ease with my own sexuality and in control. I learned so much about the human sexual condition and its deviations… When I started doing this work, it made me feel good about myself. I did not feel abused or used.” “The business gave me self-esteem and self-confidence. It allowed me to explore my own sexuality… Through my movies, I was trying to better society by creating a more open view of human sexuality." Nevertheless, she admits she has since moved on: "It was in the past... If someone wants to hate me, they can always find something, but few people give me any trouble over my films. It does not affect my kids.”

In a 1993 interview she said: "Our sons will grow up with an un-neurotic attitude toward sex and nudity. There is nothing to be ashamed of in what I do. I'm more concerned with other influences, such as society's moral judgements and violence on TV, which is the true pornography. I'm concerned about their friends from school, teachers… Kids can be vicious to each other. What path my sons decide to take in their adult lives is entirely their business. I wouldn't recommend nor disallow porn involvement. If they decided that is what they want to do, I would sit them down and give them some advice. Who better, right? I would tell them not to do anything they don't want to do, which is true for any profession."

In 1997 she married for the second time, and in March 1998 gave birth to her third son. She was now living back in Indianapolis and running a website through which she sold her old films and memorabilia. Around May 1998, however, it was announced on the internet that she had relapsed into a childhood illness, diabetes, and passed away. Her website broadcast the message: “Please set up a fund raising sale on my behalf for my medical and burial expenses. I have no medical insurance and my family can’t even afford the doctor’s bills, not to mention the cost of a burial.” It was later revealed that the entire affair was a scam designed to make money. Bud would later claim that she was alive and well living in rural Indiana.

Regardless of her later actions, Hyapatia Lee remains one of the most important figures in 1980’s US porn. Although never as popular or prolific as her original peers, Ginger Lynn, Amber Lynn, or Traci Lords, she maintained her status as a top porn star until her final retirement in 1993. In her early films she appeared petite and delicate; after 1988 she came across as more mature, confident and curvaceous. She was always extremely sexual though and enjoyed her work until the end. When she no longer enjoyed herself, she quit.

Growing up with her mother after her parents split, she attended a strict all-girls school, before going to college in Prague. While there she took part in the 'Velvet Revolution' of November 1989 that saw the country split in two. At age 18 Lea set her sights on modelling. When meeting her for the first time her Czech agent told her: "You look as beautiful as Claudia Schiffer, but more perverted." Lea eventually lost her virginity when she was 19. "I was with a student my age named Michel, it was his first time as well. I was making use of the fact that my parents were away for the weekend and had left me in charge of the house." By now Lea was modelling underwear, but the lure and glamour of Paris soon attracted her. She later admitted that: "I fell in with certain agents that lacked scruples. They basically told me: 'if you want to work, you have to sleep with people.'" Lea later described herself at this point in time as "a young timid Czech girl", but she was unwilling to return to the Czech Republic. She began not only having sex with agents, but soon found herself drifting towards soft-core, and then hard-core photo shoots. "I started to do nude pictures and found I was very good at it. Not every model can make good nude pictures. In fashion you are just some person wearing some other person's clothes. In nude pictures you are yourself. You need a special confidence to carry it off well. And from nude modelling it was a short step into adult movies."

Lea had not had a particularly promiscuous youth, but claimed: "When I have sex in front of the camera, and it's with a man that excites me, it's an added turn on." In 1995 she moved to Germany and made her first hard-core porn film using the pseudonym Annie K. Her first on-screen sex was a lesbian scene with her Czech compatriot and friend Jennifer Dior. The film, however, was a semi-professional affair directed by Ralf Scott, and conditions left a lot to be desired. She later recalled how "I found myself working with amateurs who simply wanted to degrade me. When the filming finished I was left with my face covered in come and no showers in which to get washed."

Lea was close to quitting the business, but decided to make one more film for Private entitled 'Le Jardin De Venus' (1995), directed by Ian Nicols. Nicols later recalled, "While filming ['Le Jardin De Venus'] I found a superb young Czech blond that today calls herself Lea Martini. I was really lucky to have found her, because the casting agency in Antwerp had sent me photographs of dozens of girls." During the shoot she fell in love with her co-star, French porn actor Bruno Aissix, and the two of them became inseparable. During the film he introduced Lea to anal sex, in a scene she later described as the most intense and satisfying she had ever experienced. "I love Bruno, he's an exceptional man. Outside of the business we are completely faithful to each other, but that doesn't stop him from offering me delicacies. I'm bisexual. A beautiful woman is as delicious as chocolate mouse. I love threesomes with Bruno and another woman that excites me. If I would have a relationship with anyone other than Bruno, it would definitely be with a woman." Following this movie Nicols directed, produced and edited 'Antefutura' that was tailored especially for Lea and Bruno.

Everyone was enthralled by her enthusiasm in front of the camera and 'Le Jardin De Venus' became a massive hit. She had a beautiful firm body, an alluring face and wonderful natural breasts. At the time she admitted that she didn't really enjoy the sex. Sometimes she would orgasm on the set, but on the whole she viewed it as a job, even comparing it to working in a post office every day! She later admitted that: "I rarely have an orgasm on set. Bruno believes it's because I'm such a professional." Nevertheless, Lea found the porn industry an educational experience. "Everything to do with sex I have done first on film. The first time I do oral sex was on film. The first time I do anal was on film and the first time I make love to woman was on film. I am glad about that. Porno pushes you to do new things and I would never have had sex with a woman otherwise and I like it very much... My background was very conservative, you see... my life in Czechoslovakia was very sheltered. No one ever discussed sex openly. I didn't know about things like anal sex, group sex, adventurous stuff, until I started in the industry. And these things are great fun. I have more confidence now, more money and a very exciting sex life." Lea suddenly found herself in demand throughout Europe and soon moved back to Paris with Bruno where they made a number of porn films together. Bruno was not jealous, however, and Lea was often filmed having sex with other men. In 1996 she moved to Italy where she adopted the name Cinderella and worked with Mario Salieri.

By mid-1996 she had returned to France and adopted the name Lea Martini. Her big break came later that same year when she came to the attention of French film director and producer Marc Dorcel. Dorcel ran VMD productions, the largest adult video company in France, and was responsible for turning Laure Sainclair, Anita Blond, Anita Dark, Maria De Sanchez and Olivia Del Rio into major European porn stars. Dorcel cast Lea in his movie 'La Ruee Vers Laure' (1996), opposite Laure Sainclair, Anita Dark and Olivia Del Rio. This proved to be the turning point in Lea's career and she soon became a mainstay in Dorcel productions.

Under the guidance of Marc Dorcel, Lea not only appeared in some of the best porn films made in Europe during the 1990's, but also became much more relaxed during her sex scenes. The new conditions and surroundings meant that she no longer compared it to 'working in a post office', and began to enjoy herself. This change in attitude could be seen in her performances. Lea always had class, but she was now able to somehow mix this with schoolgirl innocence while simultaneously taking part in some of her nastiest sex scenes to date. "Sometimes I like to be fucked really hard and violent, mix pain and pleasure. Lea was always selective about the movies she starred in and approached the industry with a professional attitude. "I prefer to make less money, and appear in better films. I have time. I'm planning on having a long career. That's one of the reasons I refuse to do double-penetrations. I don't want to be an actress that does everything in a few months. I'll do my first double-penetration when I consider the time is right, in a movie of my choosing and with actors that turn me on." In late 1997 she claimed: "I've only made 19 films in 19 months. But I've done lots of photo shoots for various magazines. I don't think you become a star by simply making lots of films."

Her status within the porn industry meant that Lea's mother was now aware of how her daughter made a living. Her reaction though was supportive. "We talk every day and she is very proud that I am doing well, but she won't watch my movies - thank God! But sometimes we do discuss sex. I rang up the other day and mentioned: 'Oh mum, I had such a difficult anal sex session yesterday' and she was like: 'Ooh, anal sex - how do you do that? What does it feel like?' and so on. So I said 'Well, mum, you have to use cream and control your breathing and try to relax' and so on. Anyway, a couple of days later she called me all excited and said: 'Hey, guess what? I did anal sex last night'. My mum is 50 years old and I teach her that!"

Along with a number of other European porn stars, Lea now turned her attention to the US market. She began by appearing in a number of low budget productions with Bruno, and although Lea still looked beautiful, she was these films only redeeming feature. She then teamed up with Dutch porn star Helen Duval and starred in 'LA Lust' (1998), directed by Jane Hamilton (aka Veronica Hart). This well filmed and very erotic movie finally launched Lea into the mainstream of the US market. Her beauty, and especially the fact that unlike most US porn stars Lea did not have silicon breasts, meant that she was soon in demand. Nevertheless, she never achieved the same level of success she had enjoyed in Europe. Lea and Bruno had started to drift apart as early as mid-1997. "It is difficult to have a relationship in this business. It's strange, and you might think me a hypocrite, but I don't want a man who would be prepared to let me fuck other men for a living. And it is nearly impossible to have a proper relationship with a male adult actor because he has to save himself for film. Me, I can fuck as many times as I need in one day, but the men have to save their cum for films and you cannot have a deep loving sex life if your boyfriend can't afford to cum when he sleeps with you. Also you'll see your boyfriend sleeping with your girlfriends on set and it is like - my God, where am I?" Although they remained close friends, by 1998 Lea had broken up with Bruno.

Following her split with Bruno, Lea decided to retire from porn. Although her exposure to the industry meant that she was now a confident woman that enjoyed sex, fame and money, her strict Catholic upbringing constantly caused doubts. In 1997 she confessed: "Sometimes I wonder what my life would have been like if I had never got involved. But you cannot know, can you? Sometimes the Catholic in me feels bad about what I do. I think that when you give sex for a living, a part of you disappears... I find myself thinking about just packing it all in. But I can never go back. Whatever I do, even if I become a mainstream actress, I will always be an ex-porn star."

Despite her doubts Lea remained in contact with the industry and continued to make the occasional appearance on film and in magazines. Her relationship with Bruno also remained friendly. While photographing him and his new girlfriend for a hard-core shoot in Cannes in 2000, she constantly goaded him by shouting: "Hey Bruno, when your girlfriend dumps you some day, tell her to call me, I want to fuck her!" Lea had by now relocated to London and moved behind the camera. "I'd rather work behind the camera now. I'm thinking of starting a series entitled 'Lea Martini Casting' or 'Lea Martini Girls'… Will I return to working in front of the camera again? I don't know, who can predict what will happen? Since quitting I have worked for Andrew Blake in the US, and a month ago I did a scene for Marc Dorcel. Despite having the figure and face of a model, and appearing in some extremely hot sex scenes, Lea was always something of a chameleon, often even referred to as an 'Ice Queen'. Anita Blond once recalled: "Lea is an actress that really turns me on at the moment. I find her body perfect. When she is in front of the camera she seems to transform, sexually exciting any actor or actress that she is with. Off camera she is subdued, calm and reserved. I find her completely wonderful." A reporter that met her in Cannes during the film festival of 2000 remembered: "When Lea decides to take part in the social life you realise just how good an actress she really is. She becomes the centre of attention, telling jokes, laughing, and being extremely flirtatious with both men and women. Other times, when she's alone, she's as silent as a tomb, melancholic even."

When she was still making films Lea admitted: "I don't imagine that mainstream film producers are going to come knocking at my door… I want to live in Paris and become the Pamela Anderson of porn." In a sense she achieved this, becoming, along with Sylvia Saint, the most famous porn star ever to come out of the Czech Republic. Although Sylvia Saint eclipsed her in the US, in Europe she remained one of the top stars of the European adult industry. Today Lea is romantically involved with porn producer Giancarlo Bini, whom she plans to marry. She lives in England but moves between cities: "I enjoy coming to Cannes for the weekend or for a holiday… London is a vibrant city, it's very exciting to work there, but it's also very tiring. I also return to the Czech Republic sometimes to see my family. Sometimes I visit Paris." According to Lea "I have no regrets about being a porn star. I found it very interesting and I was very happy with what I was doing." As a result she has left the door to further porn films open, and continues to occasionally appear in nude layouts for European magazines.

Crystal Wilder was born in Brooking, South Dakota, on 13 September 1967. “I had a wonderful childhood. My family were very close – real strict though. I was considered a rebel, you know, because I kinda did my own thing, even though it might hurt my parents. You know, drinking, partying, staying out late, sneaking around, staying overnight with the boyfriend. Which they never found out about. I was basically a good girl, but in their eyes, they were so strict, that I was considered a rebel. I just felt I had to take that freedom and just use it the way I wanted to. I was youngest of two. I have an older sister. Two years older.”

According to Crystal, as a teenager, “[I wasn’t] super outgoing. I had my close friends, and that was about it.” Nevertheless, she was a cheerleader in school, despite admitting, “I wasn’t really into sports. I was into swimming, but not basketball or anything like that.“ She eventually lost her virginity while still at high school. “I was 15. A boyfriend that I had been dating – he did it to me. The first time I liked it. It was just the excitement of getting the first time over with that kind of overwhelmed me.”

Leslie Bovee was born in Bend, Oregan, and began the 1970's working as a TWA stewardess. She soon quit her job with the airline to work as a go-go dancer and stripper because the pay was much better. In 1979 she joined Annette Haven, Wade Nichols and Eric Edwards in 'Love You' (1979), one of the most obscure yet interesting adult films made during the late 1970's. It was in fact the porn debut of mainstream director John Derek, husband of Bo Derek. Unlike most porn films the sex was not overly explicit - although nothing was hidden. John Derek shuttled his cast between Los Angeles, San Francisco and Hawaii in order to get the feel he was looking for, and the results are lush and beautiful. 'Love You' is not a typical porn film, and involves extensive dialogue as two couples come to terms with the notion of swapping partners. Although Bo Derek did not appear in the film she produced it and was constantly on the set with the four porn stars as her husband's consultant.

By the early 1980's Leslie had quit porn. "I had just broken up with the man who had helped me start in the business. I hadn't been enjoying the work as much as I used to - stardom can be very demanding - I did a lot of personal appearances, TV, and radio; then I got arrested and put in jail while doing a strip show tour. I started to feel cheap and and dirty and the feeling really got to me. Even today I don't tell a lot of people about my career. Don't get me wrong, the main reason I got into the business was that I was bored... bored with the straight life. This was a back door into acting, and an easy climb to stardom. I did it for the notoriety, some hot times and good money. I regret very much that I never got to be in a high quality film like 'Roommates' (1981), because one of my goals in the business was to be a pioneer."

She eventually established herself in San Francisco where she said she pursued "a sexually, politically and socially free lifestyle." Since then she has been inducted into both the XRCO and AVN Performers' Halls of Fame. According to her former boyfriend Stuart Allen: "When last heard of, in 1990, she wrote me to tell me she had just had a baby boy. I wrote back and that was it. If I had to guess, I'd say happy, healthy and living life in Long Island." Lisa Trego was born on 3 July 1959 in Moline, Illinois. She had an unremarkable childhood, describing herself as a "Midwestern farm-girl." "I was a tomboy as a kid, played with the boys. Still do, only it's different now. I think it was good for me growing up there. You had to develop your imagination, because there was nothing really to do." She eventually lost her virginity just before her 16th birthday. "I was mad at my boyfriend at the time I lost my virginity, but his two best friends were available. They did me in the back seat of a Firebird for about three hours. They'd take turns driving and fucking me over the country roads, bumping and humping."

Lisa admits she was not attractive as a teenager. "I was overweight and wore my hair like my mothers… when I dropped 40 pounds the whole picture changed… Before I lost the weight, all I had was enormous breasts, they were the only really attractive thing about me. It was a lot more expensive than living in Illinois, so I figured that I had to make big bucks quick and modelling sounded like a way to do it… I was eighteen at the time and I just turned nineteen when I started modelling… I started doing girlie modelling in August of 1978." Although Lisa didn't mind having sex in front of the camera, she remembered being quite inexperienced at the time. "I'd only started giving head a year before, so how was I to know that lip service was required when they would bark, "Get the guy up!' Learning how to use garter belts was also a treat. I know even experienced performers who still occasionally will put the panties on under the garter belt, which makes for a good deal of unintentional comedy when you're trying to remove them on camera."

The following year Lisa starred in her first full-length movie, when film director Svetlana offered her a role in '800 Fantasy Lane' (1979). Before filming began, however, she was told to lose weight, "Svetlana put me on a strict diet, no food, just vitamins." This fight to keep her weight down was to continue throughout her career as a porn star. However, according to Lisa, the atmosphere on the set was terrible. "She's [Svetlana] a tyrant… we worked twenty hour days. We were fed cold hot dogs and drank cold coffee… I worked with her in my third film, which was 'Ultra Flesh' with Seka. I thought for sure that Svetlana would have changed her ways because '800 Fantasy Lane' was her first feature also. I made excuses for her, I thought, well, she just didn't know what she was doing… So by the time 'Ultra Flesh' came around, I thought she would have straightened up her act, but she really hadn't." Despite the unpleasant surroundings of her first porn film, Lisa De Leeuw never considered quitting the business. "I really don't know why I continued. I think it was probably because the money was good and I enjoyed the acting aspects of it."

According to Lisa, her boyfriend Doug enjoyed watching her have sex with other men on screen, but her family back in Moline had no idea what their daughter was doing for a living. In 1980 she admitted: "I don't think they know about it. Well, they might. I talked to them about a month ago, and they asked questions, but in a kind of a roundabout way, about what I was doing. But they wouldn't ask me outright. And if it ever comes down to it, I'll tell them. But right now, well, they're so redneck farmer, you know, you don't dare shock them, especially when they are older people. Because my parents are in their fifties. And they've been raised with one standard, and you don't come out and say, 'Mom, I'm doing this!' I wouldn't want them to keel over."

The first film she actually enjoyed making was 'Pro-Ball Cheerleaders' (1979), although she caught pneumonia during the filming after having sex for three hours in a rain-soaked field. "After that everyone decided that they liked me wet. They kept putting me in these water scenes." One such scene was in 'Garage Girls' (1980), where she had sex with John Leslie in a shower. It was not only the best sex scene of the film, but also one of the best of her career. The highpoint, however, came with her appearance in 'Amanda By Night' (1981), when, after numerous previous nominations she finally won the Award for Best Supporting Actress. Lisa was cynical about the awards though, claiming: "it was a lot like the Academy Awards - a lot of it was political… After that, I received two Erotica’s which was nice, but I wasn't even invited to the awards those years. "A lot of people think that when you're in porno films that you're very loose, that you'll screw anybody, photographers, directors, that you go to swing parties every night, and I don't! I've had several photographers come into the business and they think automatically that if they're shooting a girl they're going to get her into bed. And it's not true. Most girls that I know and respect in this business come in, they do their job, they get paid, they leave… If they wanted to be hookers, they'd stand down on Sunset Boulevard, or something."

Although never as popular as other porn stars of her time, such as Seka or Veronica Hart, Lisa De Leeuw was, by this point, one of the most successful actresses in the industry. Furthermore, despite sometimes clashing with her on a personal level, her co-stars enjoyed working with her. In his autobiography Jerry Butler recalls: "Lisa De Leeuw is an abundant, extreme personality… For some reason I also found her to be sexy. No matter how much of a primadonna she was, no matter how demanding she was, Lisa transformed from a big, bold, untouchable landmark into a flesh and blood woman when my dick was going in and out of her."

By this time Lisa had also married her boyfriend. "He did a few films… He really didn't get too many roles though. He encouraged me because I was young and everybody wanted me and he could sit home and collect the money and then harass me to find him parts in films! Budgets had dropped, and as a result so had standards. The elaborate settings and scripts that had existed when Lisa first entered porn was a thing of the past. She was overweight, and as acting was no longer a necessity, she could not hope to compete with new younger porn stars of the era such as Kascha or April West. Lisa De Leeuw began to slowly fade from public view.

Although by her own admission she entered porn in order to make money, Lisa never condemned the industry. "I will never look down on it… there's so many people like Linda Lovelace who now makes her money by degrading the business and I don't think I would ever do that because it has been very good for me. It's given me more self-esteem, more confidence. I've gotten to see a lot of the world. I've made a lot of money. I've made a lot of great friends. Vanessa Del Rio, Samantha Fox… There are just a lot of really good people in the industry. Most people on the outside look at it and go 'Oh yeah, they're all tramps and sluts - instead of having dinner they're having orgies' - and we're really not like that… I'm not saying I don't like sex, but my all time fantasy has been to do it in a bed without high heels and a nylon garter belt… without having to yell, 'Oooh, I'm coming, I'm coming'. And in the missionary position too, which they never do!"

Lisa never understood the public's negative attitude towards porn. "I confess that I'm baffled by the ratings system. Dragonslayer depicted baby eating, and it was rated PG. Rape, maiming, killing are only rated R, but sex... I saw all these previews for the reissue of 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' on primetime TV. Usually followed by the news with a big headline: Porno Bust! They can't decide which is more obscene - death or sex?" Lisa also admits that she has no time for anti-porn feminists: "I'm proud of my body; I got my weight down from 165 to 120 [pounds], and I should have the right to put my best foot forward. If a club owner hires a singer, he's giving her an 'opportunity', but if he hires a topless dancer, it's called 'exploitation'. In both cases the performer is combining her natural beauty with the craft and artistry she has developed."

In 1988 she said in an interview: "Ten years from now, I can't see myself actively involved in acting or stripping or anything like that. It's just that it comes to a point in your life where you gotta say, 'This is what I want to do and I don't want to keep nickel and diming in the business.'" Unfortunately Lisa De Leeuw became heavily involved with drugs, through which she became infected with the HIV virus. Various sources claim that she eventually died of AIDS on 11 November 1993, thereby becoming the only renowned female porn star from the Golden Age to ever to die of the disease. According to former porn director David Jennings, however, she was still alive in 2000. The case remains open. Regardless, she remains one of the best-loved stars of the early 1980's, and has since been inducted into the 'X Rated Critics Hall OF Fame'.

Jean Jennings was born in Florida on 13 February 1957. She ran away from home as a teenager and came into contact with Lenny Camp. FBI Agent Bill Kelly worked in Miami at the time and knew of Camp: “Lenny Camp used to photograph probably thousands of girls between the ages of fifteen and eighteen or nineteen, and he sampled the merchandise on frequent occasions – even with the young ones.” Camp was later sentenced to fifteen years for taking pictures of underage girls, but in the early 1970’s he supplied most of the models for adult films shot in Florida.

Jean Jennings was only seventeen when she made her first porn film ‘Full Moon Murders’ (1974). Porn actor Tim Connelly recalled: “Jean Jennings was total white fucking trash from Florida. She was underage. Hot. Cute. Sexy. Young. Blond. Tight body. Constance Money was one of the most beautiful and enigmatic women to enter US porn during the 1970’s. She began her career with the elusive ‘Confessions Of A Teenage Peanut Butter Freak’ (1974), using the pseudonym Christene Hoover. She only appeared in one mediocre threesome, but it included her only known on-screen anal sex scene. The following year she appeared in ‘The Joy Of letting Go’ (released in 1976) and the occasional underground loop, but failed to establish herself within the industry.

Her big break came in 1975 with her third full-length film, 'The Opening Of Misty Beethoven'. Constance Money originally thought the film was going to be an R-rated picture. "I was really screwed over, I thought, during the months it took to make 'Misty Beethoven', even though the picture turned out pretty well for me. I wasn't charmed by Radley - I am charmed by very few men - and I felt he didn't use me to my full potential."

Regardless, she increased her fee to four times the normal asking price and appeared in the surreal but excellent 'Mary! Mary!' (1976). "Making 'Mary! Mary!' took just a week and I had a great time with terrific people... I didn't go away feeling so broken down and degraded." Her next film was the psychological porn thriller 'Anna Obsessed' (1978), which also starred Annette Haven. Originally to be called ‘Obsessed‘, the film was rejected by almost every US distributor for being too disturbing. Nevertheless, it is now regarded as one of the best porn films of the 1970's. In it Constance Money is trapped in a sexually dysfunctional marriage with John Leslie, and is then molested by a mysterious stalker. She finds comfort in the arms of Annette, who then joins Constance and John in a threesome as the couple try to kick-start their sex-life. Eventually it transpires that Annette was the person stalking Constance all along, and seething with jealousy she attempts to kill John. The cinematography is sharp, the story intriguing, and the sex between Constance and Annette beautiful.

Despite being one of the most popular porn stars of the decade, and the only star to appear in two solo Playboy pictorials (July 1978, and May 1979), she only starred in seven adult films. Of these, the elusive ’Confessions Of A Teenage Peanut Butter Freak’ and ’The Joy Of Letting Go’, along with 'Misty Beethoven', 'Mary! Mary!' and 'Anna Obsessed', contained new material. The other two, 'Barbara Broadcast' (1977) and ‘Maraschino Cherry’ (1978) simply included sex scenes edited out of ’Misty Beethoven’ and left on the cutting room floor.

In 1980 she retired from the business. "Having done these films affects my relationships which is why I retired. A guy I'm going out with might go to a stag party where they show a tape, and other guys will say, 'isn't that your girlfriend?' During the early 1980's Constance Money lived with porn star John Leslie with whom she had a platonic relationship, claiming, "I could never get deeply involved with a man who's making sex films. Quite a few of them are robotized... and miserable in bed. John Leslie, who worked with me in 'Mary! Mary!', I like him a lot, though his sexual ideas are extreme. "Playboy flew several porno actresses to Los Angeles for a 'Girls Of Porn' pictorial they were doing. They put us up at the mansion... Warren Beatty was one of the guests. He kept following me around, trying to put the make on me... We did it the first time in the sauna. Hef and Constance Money came in and fucked right next to us. Bambi Woods grew up on Long Island in an upper middle-class family and attended an exclusive Catholic Girl's school as a teenager. She ran away in 1975, when she was sixteen years old, and got married. The marriage didn't last though, and by the time she turned seventeen she had divorced and returned home. Bambi Woods soon rebelled against her parents again and decided to hitchhike across the country to San Francisco, apparently carrying a small billyclub to dissuade any amorous truck driver who wanted to give her more than just a ride.

Bambi was 19 and living in San Francisco when she ran into financial difficulties. "I had a friend who had done a couple of the films and I owed her money. She told me that some producers had called her and were looking for some new faces and said I should go down and talk to them. She told me I was going to get paid something like a thousand dollars a day but when I talked with them, they were only offering three hundred and fifty a day." Bambi, nevertheless, accepted and was cast as Debbie in the now legendary movie 'Debbie Does Dallas' (1978).

The director of the film was originally planning on making a film called ‘Teenage Services’. Things changed when he met Bambi: “A young woman came into the studio that I was working in at the time, told me her story of woe coming back from Dallas trying out for the cheerleaders down there. So I called up my partner at the time and said I got an idea, why don’t we scrap this and we’ll do this? He said, ‘sounds like a good idea to me’. And that’s how it was born… It was really born out of her personality. She was as bubbly as you could get. She seemed to be healthy in her attitude to sex. The only thing she had a problem with that I was not aware of at the time was she had a drug problem. I named her Bambi Woods.”

'Debbie Does Dallas' was a well-made movie about a group of high-school cheerleaders. Despite popular myth, Bambi had never been a cheerleader for the Dallas Cowboys, although she did apparently try out for them once. "It's not about the Dallas Cheerleaders", she later said, "It's about these high school cheerleaders who want to become Dallas cowgirls. Herschal Savage, who also appeared in the film, would later recall “I never met Bambi Woods. I saw the film afterwards and I regretted not meeting her, because I think one thing that works about this film, even though technically speaking it’s, come on, it’s a porno film, it’s not good on many levels. But the fact that this girl is the object of the viewers desire and no one actually gets to have sex with her really created a great tease. Back then Bambi Woods was considered really beautiful.”

The film went on to become one of the top five grossing porn movies of all time. In order to make it they conned the top two administrators at the New York State University at Stony Brook into giving them full run of the campus, and even playing themselves in the film. Although they had no idea it was a porn film, the end result was an embarrassment for the state, from the governor down. The administrators lost their jobs and a state attorney got a much ignored lifetime injunction against any theatre showing the movie in New York.

Bambi had no intention of becoming a porn star. "The only reason I went in the first place was because I needed the money. I didn't go looking for it but I needed the money." After 'Debbie Does Dallas' was released, she supported herself by working as a stripper at New York's Melody Burlesque Theatre with other top names such as Seka, Kandi Barbour and Lysa Thatcher. Fred Lincoln, porn actor, director and producer later recalled: “I was the first person to ever put porno girls in theatres and nightclubs in New York. I did it by convincing this guy, Bernie, to hire Bambi Woods. He paid her three thousand dollars and told me, ‘If she don’t make this money back, you gotta pay us.’ She packed the club.” One visitor remembered having "Bambi Woods sprawled out totally nude across my lap, hands permitted anywhere - she just wanted a buck every 2-3 minutes or so."

In 1983, however, she decided to make a comeback, starring in 'Debbie Does Dallas II'. Jim Clark was again the director, but unlike the original, this time Bambi appeared in almost every sex scene. The film picked up with Debbie not making the cheerleading squad and travelling to see her aunt Sadie who ran a brothel. The film was not as successful or as funny as the original, and according to Clark, “the reason that film got so messed up was because a friend of hers from Brooklyn came up and turned her back on to things that she had been off, and she went off the deep end.” Although Bambi had a new image in the film, she was still as sexually explosive as she had been five years earlier. It was initially to be titled 'The Best Little Whore In Texas', but had to be changed for fear of legal problems. "It's very funny," she commented at the time, "I have stood right next to the original movie poster outside of theatres and no one recognizes me."

At the time Bambi planned to continue making porn films, including one that was to be a take-off on 'National Lampoon's Animal House'. She even admitted, "I fucked him last year. He's really great in bed. You might not think so, but John Belushi is a great lover." Apart from one Swedish Erotica loop though, she once again disappeared from public view. It was not until 1985 that Bambi Woods finally starred in her third and final porn film, imaginatively named 'Debbie Does Dallas III' (1985). Unlike her previous two films, however, Bambi only appeared in nude non-sex scenes. The sex scenes she does appear in are actually out-takes from her previous two 'Debbie' movies.

The fate of Bambi Woods in the mid-1980s became a mystery and later the subject of a documentary, ‘Debbie Does Dallas Uncovered’. According to the Art Director of the original ‘Debbie’ movie, “She was a little bit shy and a little bit hesitant… She was a private girl from a tremendously different upbringing and she was all of a sudden in a whole different world..” Clark claims, “I heard that in 1986 she died of an overdose, but I’m certain not sure.” According to Eric Edwards, on the other hand, “From what I heard from other sources I think that her parents rescued her from this industry and took her away into seclusion and probably gave her counselling.”

Regardless as to what actually became of Bambi Woods, she remains one of the iconic stars of porn's golden age. She may have starred in these movies for financial reasons and had no intention to take her involvement in the industry any further, but she will forever be remembered for her role in 'Debbie Does Dallas'. For many Bambi Woods was Debbie. According to the films distributor, Bob Burge, “Bambi was the girl next door. She was the cheerleader. She had that cheerleader look. She had that girl next door look.” Today the film is perhaps the most well known porn film ever made. In Japan a series of comics were named after it, while in Australia there was even a rock band touring the college circuit called 'Debbie Does...' In 2002 it was transformed into a successful mainstream Broadway musical, thereby bringing the original movie, and it's main star, even more exposure.

Brigitte Maier was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on 7 August 1952, but moved to the USA with her parents when she was four years old to settle in Chicago. She grew up in a conservative middle-class family and eventually attended a Catholic all-girls school. Her first foray into the world of cinema was at age 15 when she appeared in the drama 'A Margem', in 1967. Determined to escape what she saw as a mundane middle-class lifestyle, Brigitte relocated to Los Angeles when she was 17. "I got off the plane and wow, man; I was in love with the place. It's not cold like Chicago."

Once in Los Angeles Brigitte worked in a number of dead-end jobs in order to support herself. "I worked here and there, and finally got a job as a topless dancer, and then I made some little films." From 1971-1972 she appeared in a number of cheap 8mm porno loops, before starring in her first full length American adult movie 'Tongue' (1973). Brigitte had by now grown into an extremely attractive 20 year-old woman, whose deceptively innocent appearance reminded one of the girl-next-door. Nevertheless, scenes in 'Tongue', which showed her obviously enjoying facial come-shots, soon made the industry notice her. Within a couple of months she had made her second porn film entitled 'Fulfilment' (1973).

In September 1973 she was offered $1,500 to star in a Swedish porn film named 'Porr I Skandalskolan [aka School for Scandal]' (1974). At the time Brigitte was beginning to question her lifestyle in the industry: "There were times in LA when I stayed up nights, crying and screaming that I’d never be in another porno film. I guess I became oversensitive. My sexual feeling is something special to me, and I don’t want to have it fucked around with." She decided to move to Stockholm and give the porn industry another chance, and admits that "something magic happened... It was really great. The setting was an old castle and we got to live there for six weeks."

She remained in Stockholm after finishing the movie and one night found herself in a club with fellow American porn actress Levelle Ruby. "That's where I met Lasse Braun… He's one of the top pornographers in Europe. His real name is Alberto Ferro. He's an Italian. I liked him the moment I saw him. He's got black hair, black eyes, a long black beard, he dresses all in black. He looks diabolic." "Levelle called him over and we were having a real happy conversation when he said, ‘I am the King of Porno’! And Levelle said she [Brigitte] is the Queen of Porno! I’m not sure if that was true, but I was okay with it at the time... There were no rooms available at all in Stockholm, so he said to us, you can come up to my room and share it, and we were used to that, so we said okay, fine. I thought he was interested in Levelle because they were talking and everything, but Levelle stayed in one bed, and he and I stayed in the other bed!"

According to Levelle: "It was kind of cute because he said ‘one of you will have to sleep with me!’ And I said ‘well sorry, but I can’t.’ so of course my friend that was with me, she had to sleep with him." Brigitte would later admit "That was my big break, meeting Lasse."

Alberto Ferro had spent the previous few years making high quality European porn loops. He viewed himself as an anarchist revolutionary, at war with society's moral values. "Show things the way they are! You have to shock them! You’ve got to hit them in the face so they say ‘Oh, why are you doing this? This is bad!’ So you get a big reaction. And the bigger the reaction, the better for the movie and the sexual revolution, which is the aim of my work." In Brigitte he found a kindred spirit.

Brigitte: "I'd like it if I could live only in my sexual dream world. Pornography lets me do that. I'm working in an open, almost artistic way, and pornography helps liberate people, helps them understand their hidden desires. So when they put it down, man, I say to hell with their bourgeoisie, middle-class values!"

Levelle: "Because of birth-control, for the first time one had this freedom to have sex without the consequences of pregnancy… Without this freedom to express your sexual appetite I don’t think pornography could have advanced to the stage it did."

Brigitte: "Having sex was just part of the social scene. I would go to Amsterdam with my girlfriends and we would party with friends at their apartments and at the end of the night we would have sex with each other. I’m not a lesbian, but it was part of the whole thing."

Alberto was hoping to produce and direct his first full-length film and Brigitte appeared ideal for the main part. Within a few months later she moved in with him as a permanent houseguest in Stockholm. He was attracted to Brigitte not only because of her beauty, but also because of her apparent naïve charm and innocent looks. Together they moved to his company's headquarters in Breda, The Netherlands. His new project was to be called 'Penetration', and was to be shown at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival.

At the time the distribution of sexually explicit 35mm movies in Europe was still limited to a few small theatres in Denmark with no minimum box office guarantee. Germany was still under strict prohibition of any pornography. The US market was complicated because foreign porn films couldn't go through US customs and no American theatre would showcase a smuggled movie. In the rest of the world there was no adult film distribution whatsoever. As a result Alberto knew that there was little or no chance to recoup the production costs. In order to save money, he decided to shoot 30 minutes as a documentary, add five of his most humoristic existing loops, and a 4-minute cartoon that he produced in the spring of 1973.

Alberto began shooting the documentary section in early November 1973. The idea was to shoot a loop with Brigitte Maier and have a cameraman shoot Alberto at work on the set. He designed an abstract and unconventional set upon which he acted out his directorial role with deliberate pompous style as he attempted to get Brigitte and two male stars to complete the act he had in mind. Alberto wanted to present something that would, at the time, appear shocking. Brigitte was to participate not only in a double penetration scene, but also a double anal penetration scene. Alberto knew that seeing the beautiful and innocent looking Brigitte take part in such an act, before having both men come all over her face, would cause shock waves throughout Cannes. Brigitte later recalled: "I think it was just a stupid idea and Alberto knew it wasn’t possible, and he wanted to scare me! I think it was part of his comedic mind. Because the premise was really frightening!"

According to Levelle, Alberto and Brigitte had a complicated relationship. "I don’t perceive him as being a violent person. Anything he does has to do with giving people what they want… He has a need to dominate. It’s an inherent male need. Most men want to dominate women. And some women want to be dominated by men... Brigitte was the kind of person that had a need to give her life over to someone else. And Alberto, he didn’t have a desire to run your life, his desire was to have you serve his life."

Brigitte: "He helped me discover some of my masochistic tendencies. I really freaked out – I had never been aware of them before… I’m turned on by people who present some kind of authority to me, sexually speaking. I wouldn’t dream of being anything but a masochist now."

'Penetration' was finished in March 1974, and in May the same year, became the first porn film ever to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival. It was a resounding success. During the era of 'Porn Chic', the film was viewed as Europe's answer to the US movie 'Behind the Green Door'. As a result of the exposure gained from the film Brigitte Maier posed for Penthouse in July 1974, being heralded as "the next reigning queen of the pornographic scene".

The film was picked up for the US market by a Greek-American filmmaker present at the festival. He realised that the title 'Penetration' was too strong for the American audiences, so he changed it to 'French Blue'. With Alberto's blessing the film premiered in New York in December 1974, and, according to Variety magazine, immediately became one of the top 50 grossing movies of the year. In his review of the film for Variety, film critic Sege claimed: "As a general rule, humour and hardcore don't keep company. The funnier the explicity, the less erotic the film. But this Dutch import manages to combine generous amounts of both elements. Seems a good bet for hardcore situations. Essentially, the Lasse Braun production takes a humorous behind-the-scenes look at the making of a hardcore loop. A pompous, blustery director (portrayed by Braun himself) directs two guys and an unusually attractive femme (Brigitte Maier) in a futile effort to mount an anal sex act involving all participants."

Alberto and Brigitte both moved to the States in order to promote the film, and were immediately sued by Penthouse magazine. The movie's publicity campaign had quite legitimately advertised Brigitte as 'Penthouse Cover Girl, Star of French Blue'. In the ensuing lawsuit Penthouse demanded the immediate confiscation of all film prints and huge damages, but lost the case.

While in the States Brigitte returned to her native Chicago in order to visit family and friends. Unfortunately her reputation as a major porn star in both America and Europe had proceeded her. By her admission the visit "didn't go very well… It's like, first my high school friends would be shocked at what I was doing. And then they'd be afraid I was going to steal away their old man. They thought it was perverted, but they were the ones who were perverted. Most of them are married to each other now and have kids and conform to all the rules, even though they're still young. They're just like their parents." The hardest part of the visit, however, was confronting her parents. The European success of 'French Blue' had already led to her being on the cover of Penthouse as well as a photo layout inside. "And that's when it really hit the fan, man… I said in the interview how I was into porno and all that, you know, and my daddy bought that issue of Penthouse, and I guess it really blew his mind when he saw who was on the cover."

Nevertheless, Brigitte Maier, like many other adult stars of her time, such as Brigitte Lahaie and Annette Haven, truly believed that porn was a revolutionary tool that could be used to confront the moral contradictions of society. "Middle class people just don't understand. Myself, I'm just a simple girl, not some kind of bizarre freak. I just like to feel good, you know? And if people would let their fantasies hang out and not repress them, they wouldn't be so bottled up and violent. Lasse Braun's got his head together. He thinks women should be themselves and make love freely and not be afraid of their desires. And he thinks sexuality should be more divorced from human relationships. If you can enjoy the pure physical relationship of just two people together - or three people, you know - and not get all involved emotionally, it's a lot better… You know something? A lot more people would be as weird as I am, if they really thought about it."

She also viewed porn as an emotional form of art. "I need the same basic resources to do erotic art that any other artist, sculpture or musician uses… Let the sociologists, psychologists and journalists explain it. I just live my art.... I know that making love before the camera turns some people on, but not me. I’m not an exhibitionist… I really get into the person I’m with. The fact that the camera is there picking up the energy between us is an extra turn-on. But if I’m not with a person that excites me, it doesn’t matter weather the camera is there or not. If I fuck that person it’s just sex, and something is lost."

Brigitte had been paid $500 for her role in 'French Blue'. Yet by 1975-1976, the Dutch press acknowledged that it had become the top grossing film of any kind ever made by a production company in The Netherlands. Brigitte did not appear concerned. "None of the big porno stars have made money… Harry Reems never got a penny of percentage for all those movies he made. But I may get a percentage next time, if I work right. This is just the beginning."

Brigitte Maier proceeded to appear in a number of European B movies, until Alberto Ferro contacted her again asking her to star in his upcoming film 'Sensations'. In order to finance the film Alberto and Brigitte flew to Cleveland to meet the American financier Reuben Sturman. Sturman and Alberto had worked together in the past, with the American using many of the latter's loops in his peep show business. According to English pornographer Tuppy Owens in her 1992 book 'The Making of Sensations', Sturman "showed little enthusiasm. He sat, expressionless, listening to Alberto enthusing and gesticulating over his film story. Franklin's strength was his silence; Alberto's was his gusts of vivid imagery, coloured even brighter by his bizarre English and his forceful hand gestures. Meanwhile, Brigitte took off her clothes and sidled across the floor to Sturman who pressed a button, locking the door. Reuben puffed on his pipe and rocked in his chair as his dick grew in Brigitte's mouth. While Alberto talked on, the little Jew gradually lost his composure… Maier sucked him in slow steady gulps. As the veins in his forehead swelled, he shot his spunk down the porn star's mouth. 'I'm prepared to give you $50,000' Reuben told Alberto shortly afterwards."

Alberto Ferro eventually managed to accumulate $250,000 and shot 'Sensations' during the first two months of 1975. It begins in England with an innocent Brigitte Maier boarding a ferry at Dover in order to visit her boyfriend in Amsterdam. On the ferry she meets a number of tourists from the Continent and agrees to join up with them later on. The film then follows a shocked Brigitte through The Netherlands and Belgium as she is exposed to various sexual perversions. She eventually meets her boyfriend, only to find that his occupation as photographer involves him fucking his models. Distraught, she finally joins up with her friends from the ferry again as they visit the art gallery of 66 year-old Jean Villroy and his wife (played by Tuppy Owens). Here all Brigitte's morals and inhibitions are waylaid as she finds herself willingly sucked into a world of exhibitionism, bisexuality, group sex, golden showers and cocaine. The film ends with her surrounded by a dozen men and women, all making love to her, and eventually sucking her, literally, into an abyss of sexual gratification.

The final scene of the orgy took place on Alberto's personal oversized bed, and was shot in Breda on the last working day. The ending wasn't scripted as it came out. Brigitte was to have a sudden surge of shame after having been fucked by everyone, before running nude out of the bedroom and disappearing into the night. But time was short. The whole sex scene, with the involvement of so many characters prior to Brigitte's flight, took more time than planned. According to Alberto's principles, everyone had to have at least one real orgasm in every sex scene. So, when he realized that he was going overtime, he improvised the whole eating scene and the circling of the seven nude characters around Brigitte. The wonderful ending was basically the result of a miscalculation and necessity.

Tuppy Owens, writer and founder of The Sex Maniacs Ball, also appeared in the film. "I was in sensations because I thought ‘I’m33 years old now, and if I don’t do it, it will probably be too late’. And I was trying to do everything I could… It was a laugh! I have adored being in that film and I like the idea that quite a few people have probably had a wank over me!"

According to Brigitte: "It was an attempt to put a film that came from our field into the mainstream. It was one little attempt to elevate it from peepshow status to something that could be considered a part of the culture."

'Sensations' was a major success both at the Cannes Film Festival and in theatres across the continent, remaining one of the best adult films ever made in Europe. Brigitte Maier's successful portrayal of an innocent American girl led astray, along with the fact that most of the cast had never appeared in porn before, only added to its appeal. In Germany it eventually grossed more than 'Emmanuelle' and 'Deep Throat' combined.

Due to restrictive US import laws Alberto had been forced to bring the movie into the country through Canada, disguising it as a medical film concerning the study of human neurological reactions. By this point Brigitte had become Alberto's girlfriend and the two of them moved to New York in order to await the film's arrival. The operation was a success, and on 2 November 1975 a full-page advertisement appeared in the Sunday edition of The New York Times, advertising the movie's premiere on the 4th. In the States the movie received rave reviews, but perhaps because of its extreme depictions of sex and drugs, its European success was not emulated to the same degree.

The January 1976 edition of Playboy wrote: "Imported from the Netherlands, with American-raised Brigitte Maier as its star, Sensations is the best bet of all for outright voyeurs whose criteria for a sex movie begins with beautiful girls and potent males and ends with an orgy. Writer, producer-director AGF the man behind Lasse Braun films, famous for short, bawdy stag reels and one so-so feature called French Blue has finally got it together in a plot less but sensually pulsating sextravaganza about a day in the life of a Minnesota girl visiting swinging Amsterdam. Brigitte, irresistible and photogenic right up to the space between her front teeth, looks more like the available girl next door than a reigning porn queen, though her air of interesting innocence merely hypes the appeal of a half-dozen other Sensations starlets with fine figures, sultry voices and vices to match. The musical score alone offers a simultaneous tune-up and turn-on."

Screw wrote: "Sensations is superb! This film is so hot that I recommend that any theatre preparing to exhibit it, wallpaper their place with asbestos to prevent it from burning to the ground."

The New York magazine WINS declared: "Sensations is what porno (GOOD PORNO) should be all about."

Jim Holliday said: "Sensations demonstrates that there is nothing better than a great foreign film. I would rate this French film as the hottest foreign entry ever made, and even on a professional level, Sensations belongs in the all-time top five...so sumptuous that sex is an art. Braun's penchants give his pictures a singular tilt toward the kinky side of town. His characters are as interested in the psychological aspects and the interpersonal dynamics of sex as the mechanics and sensations of it. The individual's need to control is in conflict with his wish to let go, and out of this struggle comes much of the tension and drama in a Braun movie. Europeans seem to have a culturally derived attitude toward screen sex that gives their pictures a distinctive quality different from those made in America."

Bill Margold also rated it as one of the best porn films ever, claiming: "Sensations goes where Emmanuelle could only dream about."

The film's success Brigitte moved back to the USA, where she appeared in Playboy in December 1975. She also starred in a string of European and American porn films, such as 'Puss O Rama' (1975), 'The Second Coming Of Eva' (1975), 'True Way' (1975), 'Love Camp' (1976) and 'Kinkorama' (1977), as well as a number of 8mm loops with stars such as John Holmes. None of them managed to repeat the success of 'Sensations', or even 'French Blue'. Brigitte eventually became disenchanted with the US porn industry. "Americans can’t seem to separate an enthusiastic porno actress from a prostitute. I’m not a hooker – I just have fun. But in America when I’m asked to do a porno film, I’m essentially being asked to turn a trick. In Europe directors care about me and my emotions and feelings. Here it seems like sex is still treated as a taboo, as something unnatural. Fucking in American porno films seems staged and the camera just shows close-ups of a cock and a cunt. In America you go to a set and they want you to screw some guy you’ve never even seen before. It’s too artificial. The Europeans try to capture feelings and emotions, so they show the faces and the whole body. Maybe it’s because they take enough care to find people who are naturally attracted to each other. I did a shooting in London with a guy from Mexico City. He had so much style… aristocracy… dressed beautifully… long fingernails… got along great with everyone. You sometimes think such a nice guy will not be able to make it happen, but we got into a trip that was natural for us. I had met him a few weeks earlier and wanted him right away, but we didn’t have a chance until the day of the shooting. He was very gentle and slow, and I went really wild – I didn’t have to act at all."

Brigitte eventually retired in 1978. She later married, had children, and moved with her husband to Rome, where she became involved in the Italian women's movement. She has since given out mixed feelings about her involvement with Alberto Ferro, a man with whom she has forever been linked. Twenty years after her retirement she claimed in an interview: "I wasn’t very good. I wasn’t like the porno actresses today that just love it so much! I wasn’t like that. I didn’t want it. I did it, but I was just a young girl and I was mixed up a little, because I agreed with all of Alberto’s philosophy but I shouldn’t have used myself for it. I allowed myself to be. But I was really in love with him at that time."

Alberto: "She was good. She was sometimes disappointing because I am very demanding, and sometimes she was excellent! So in general she was a good person and we had a good relationship for a while. And like every relationship, because I don’t believe in eternal relationships, it ended."

Levelle: "She was this person that felt she should be the greatest porno star in the world, and interestingly enough... she meets the man that could help her be that. So it was a marriage made in heaven!"

Tabatha Cash was born in 1974, in Paris, France. Although she later claimed to be of Japanese-Italian extraction, in reality her father was from Algeria and her mother was French. She grew up in the South Paris slum of Cit6 Massy, but claims: "I lived for 16 years in a Paris South suburb and I really enjoyed myself!" While growing up, Tabatha was a flat-cheasted skinny girl. "By 12 or 13, my breasts started growing before all the other girls but it also stopped earlier, and when I looked at myself, it gave me a complex. So I had my breasts operated on twice, because if I was a man, I would hardly be aroused by a girl as flat as [Jane] Birkin."

Tabatha was a strong-willed teenager, who had an aversion to work. "I was romantic and loved the idea that I'd meet a charming prince one day. I wanted to be like a princess and not work." She was developing into an attractive young girl, and knew how to use what she had in order to get what she wanted. "My first kiss was with a guy who had spots and greasy hair and was very ugly. I was in love with another teenager but I didn't want to kiss him because I didn't know how. So I learned with the ugly guy, it was so unpleasant." As a teenager, Tabatha developed an obsession for money. "I wasn't like all the other little girls saying, 'I want to be a doctor' or anything. The only dream I had was to have money." At first I was a model pupil at school, then I started needing much more pocket money than my parents could afford. I shoplifted a little but mostly pick-pocketed. At fifteen she was finally arrested and sent to a young offenders prison for four months. She later claimed: "I'm not proud to have been in prison, but I'm proud of not having been a victim. I have no regrets about that."

When Tabatha was released from prison she continued stealing and eventually became involved with a group of French neo-Nazi skinheads. Their leader was the son of a Turkish immigrant, called Serge Ayoub [aka Batskin], and at seventeen Tabatha became his girlfriend. It was then that she had a tattoo of a triple seven solar wheel (also the symbol of the South African Afrikaans extreme-right) done on her right breast. She later had a rose tattooed over this to hide it.

In 1991 her best friend was again arrested for stealing and sent to prison. Tabatha decided that picking pockets on the underground without a back up was too dangerous, and began to look for an easier way to make money. Tabatha admits: "I would do anything for the things I want." As a result, when she met a man who specialised in nude and hard-core pornographic photographs, she acquired false identification papers and applied for a job as a model. "I needed money because I have always been a big spender. I was still at school when I was offered to pose for nude photos. It was easy money and I could make more in one day than in a month with a regular job. The lure of gain overcame any resistance I could have." Tabatha did her first hard-core photo shoot when she was still seventeen. A few months after her eighteenth birthday she realised there was more money to be made doing movies, and appeared in her first hardcore porn film. "It was the fastest way to get out of my environment. It was purely for the money."

"Tabatha Cash was just the perfect pseudonym since cash was my only motivation. I was a bitch for porno. Full stop. Because that's just what selling your ass is, with or without the camera. I never tried to hide behind a hypocrite image of actress like so many others. From 18 to 20 I faced what I was doing. And then I could look at myself in the mirror every morning thinking: 'You're a bitch. That's the way you chose to earn your life, that's all.'"

Tabatha later claimed: "I never had any problems in front of the camera." "It takes half an hour to do a scene and it goes very quickly. It's not beautiful, so it's just fucking and it's very easy. I was never nervous because it was a job I decided to do and I know what it meant. I knew that to do a porn movie meant you had to fuck in front of many people. The first time I had no feelings. The first time I took the easy money, I liked it - that was the only feeling I had."

Would never take a come shot in the face. She had a certain glamour about her and deserved her popularity." Richard Pacheco also remembered her as "a talented actress. And she was great to have sex with." Annette herself believes that male porn stars "don't feel threatened by me like some insecure actresses might. That's their problem, not mine. 'Love You' is not a typical porn film, and involves extensive dialogue as two couples come to terms with the notion of swapping partners. Although Bo Derek did not appear in the film she produced it and was constantly on the set with the four porn stars as her husband's consultant. Annette later recalled: "Bo produced it and John wrote and directed the movie. We made it in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and did a lot of location shooting in Hawaii. It was an interesting experience. They're good people. I love them dearly."

One of the main things Annette stood against was child pornography. "I loath the thought of that. I have never seen any of it in the business, but that whole trip is too much. I still consider myself a lady." In attacking the negative stereotypes of female porn actresses she claimed, "It's because men in this society are allowed to have sex and women aren't. Therefore if women are participating in the sexual industry they get a lot of criticism. Men in the business get asked by people: 'Gee, what's it like to have sex with such a beautiful woman?' Whereas the women get asked 'How could you do such a thing?' And that's societal attitude." But there were other deeper issues at stake with Annette. "I thought it would give me an excellent platform from which to speak about sexuality, something I had an investment in doing… I had seen my girlfriends incestuously raped and forced to give birth. Patricia and Sharon were raped by their fathers. One was 13; the other was 17. The 13-year-old - 12 when she was raped - was forced to give birth and keep the baby. Patricia wanted me to find her an abortionist. I was 14. I didn't know how to find one; so I told my mother. She had both girls come to our house and take refuge, but the police wouldn't allow them to stay."

Nevertheless, Annette is realistic about the porn industry. "In the adult industry you're running into a lot of social stigma when you become part of it… If I want to become a lawyer, I'm going to have to fight the bar. I am going to have to prove to them that I am not guilty of moral failings… Because being in this industry puts a stigma on you. It's like: 'Oh my God, if they do it on screen, wow! We all know that girls aren't supposed to do it at all. And to do it on screen! Oh boy!' I'm proud of what I do. I don't deny it to anybody. It's called, 'If you don't like it, then you don't have to deal with me.' I don't think that most people could handle this job very well. I really don't. I don't think most people are emotionally equipped. I think you have to be a special kind of person. A person that can deal with the stress of having sex on camera. And then dealing with that position in life with society as a whole."

Not everyone shared Annette's beliefs concerning the value of porn. Actor/director John Seeman recalled how while filming 'Desires Within Young Girls' (1977), "I suggested that we shoot in this wooded area that overlooked the whole bay… Annette Haven and I were doing a scene. In the woods nearby, a woman was hiking with her son. She saw us and called the police. One cop came charging out of the woods. There were 20 of us. He took the film. Annette and I were arrested. I was released as I soon as I produced my California drivers license. Annette didn't have her license so she had to go to jail, where she spent most of her time signing autographs… We were convicted for nudity in public. We got off with a year or two probation."

Annette later recalled the same incident. "The production manager assured us that we would be secluded. No one would see us. If anyone came around we'd be warned… Naturally, while I was giving head to John Seeman, a lady and her child came by and called the police. They were right too. We had no business being there in public. I was, unfortunately, the only person in the group with no I.D. of my own… and I was the only one who got taken in… It wasn't bad. I was treated like a lady… four hours later I was bailed out and back on the set."
Annette & Mainstream Hollywood

During the mid to late 1970's Annette Haven became romantically involved with fellow porn star Paul Thomas and appeared eight times in various Playboy pictorials. In 1980 she renewed her relationship with Bo Derek by appearing in Blake Edwards' classic comedy '10', along with a number of porn stars such as Serena, Constance Money and Dorothy Le May. "I actually cast myself in '10' because I was involved in casting the party scene. I couldn't find enough females that were right, so I cast myself. It was fun… Julie Andrews and Blake Edwards were wonderful. Dudley Moore was a really nice guy and a genuine man. He took off his clothes with everyone else in the scene. There was no problem. He was absolutely cool." Dorothy Le May later recalled how "We were supposed to film for two days, but the weather wasn't right, and Blake Edwards didn't work if the conditions weren't to his liking. But we got paid anyway. And we'd [the group of porn stars hired for the film] get crazy in our Culver City hotel room. Annette Haven had her leather party one night and room service walked in. Jamie Gillis and Serena were there. Craziness. The hotel management didn't like us after that and we didn't get any more room service."

Annette's experience with Blake Edwards on the set of '10' was perhaps the only positive one she had from mainstream Hollywood. "He was extraordinary polite and nice. You can tell when someone's leering around you and he didn't do any of that. I actually didn't think that the casting coach existed in Hollywood. I actually for a few naïve years thought people got their roles for their acting ability… I have a lot more respect for my industry because at least we're upfront about it."

Her dislike of Hollywood mainstream though was also the result of personal interaction with some of its main characters. "I was pimped out by this piece-of-garbage publicist in LA. She set up this appointment for me to go down and see the people at Paramount… The premise was that the producer wanted this movie… So we had this big meeting in his offices, all very impressive. He and his confederate wanted a girl to work with who 'loved having fun, who loved to party'. After six hours of badgering, I got them to define what that meant: screwing them. At that point I terminated the interview. 'I screw on screen, but I don't screw producers.' Then he starts back-pedalling… So he put me up at the Beverly Hills Hotel. We were supposed to go out on a double date - his associate and this female. The two men tried to get the girl and me to have sex in front of them, which I wasn't going to do and neither was she. Then the confederate and his date left me and the Paramount person alone in the hotel room. At dinner I had eaten three Quaaludes and drunk a whole bunch of alcohol… I was really loaded, I know what my tolerance levels are, and I was about at my peak. I was okay except that he attacked me, and I wasn't in any shape to fight him off. He was coked up… So this guy stripped me and proceeded to do various things that were rather extraordinary. They got very perturbed when they found out just how very x-rated I was, and that was that." The role eventually fell to Melanie Griffith. Annette remained on the set as consultant, and later, having seen the finished product, expressed relief that she had not got the part, as she considered the film too violent. Her support for pornography and repulsion for graphic violence often influenced her career decisions. "I turned down the role of the head female werewolf in 'The Howling' because of their use of the porno shop in the front of the film. The maniac gets the girl into a peep show emporium and tries to rape her and the scenario was very negative about the sort of violence and degeneracy we saw and the adult business. I refused the part. I hated 'Hardcore', too, but that was such a joke film, I couldn't get too upset about it. It was ludicrous. I turned down $23,000 in February [1983] alone because of some violent or tasteless parts of the properties I was offered."

Annette did appear in a few mainstream productions that avoided extreme and graphic violence, such as the 'Hawaii Five-O' episode 'Boner of Contention'. The story involves McGarrett investigating the islands porn industry. Annette played the Five-O receptionist, while John Holmes appeared as the Chief of Police, and Seka as a Sea Life park attendant.

As the 1980's began Annette continued starring in quality porn films, such as 'Peaches And Cream' (1981), 'Memphis Cathouse Blues' (1982) and 'Bodies In Heat' (1983), but her appearances became fewer and fewer. The Video Age had just begun and younger starlets, such as Ginger Lynn, Amber Lynn and Traci Lords were out to claim her crown. Although none of these porn stars had the class or acting ability of Annette Haven, in a business that constantly seeks fresh faces, they began to overtake her in popularity. Furthermore, the advent of video meant that quality control within the industry began to slide. "They're trying to do these videos as cheaply and as rapidly as possible, and it shows… They don't know, or just don't care, about how much time and energy it takes to turn out something really good. In the mid seventies and even the late seventies, we were doing product that maybe wasn't all that terrific, but was getting better all the time." As a result she re-enrolled in college and began studying to be a computer programmer. One of her last films was 'The Grafenburg Spot' (1985) with Ginger Lynn.
