The CVSA has announced that its annual International Roadcheck initiative will take place May 12–14, 2026. During this 72-hour enforcement effort, inspectors across the United States, Canada, and Mexico will review commercial motor vehicles and drivers for compliance with safety regulations at weigh stations and temporary roadside inspection locations.

Most inspections will follow the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a comprehensive process that evaluates both driver requirements and vehicle condition.

For drivers, inspectors will review items such as:

Licenses and qualifications

Hours-of-service records and electronic logging devices (ELDs)

Medical certifications and seat belt use

Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse status (U.S.)

Signs of impairment

Drivers found with serious violations may be placed out of service until the issues are corrected.

For vehicles, inspections will focus on critical safety components, including:

Brake systems, tires, lights, steering, and suspension

Cargo securement and coupling devices

Fuel and exhaust systems

Frames, driveline components, and windshield wipers

Passenger-carrying vehicles will also receive additional checks of emergency exits, seating, and electrical systems.

Vehicles that pass inspections without critical violations may receive a CVSA inspection decal, which is valid for up to three months and indicates recent compliance.

Each year, International Roadcheck highlights key enforcement priorities.

For 2026, the driver focus will be on ELD tampering and falsification of hours-of-service records, with inspectors watching for manipulated or inaccurate log entries.

The vehicle focus will be on cargo securement, emphasizing the prevention of shifting, falling, leaking, or improperly secured loads that create roadway hazards.

Data collected during the three-day inspection period will be analyzed and released later this year to track safety trends across the industry.

This year’s special focus is on brake drums and rotors, key components that affect braking efficiency and safety.

Vehicles with no critical violations may receive a CVSA decal, while those with out-of-service issues will be sidelined until repairs are made. In addition to inspections, educational efforts are underway to raise awareness among drivers and carriers about proactive brake maintenance.

The powerful initiative by Project-61 is bringing awareness to the harsh reality behind the average life expectancy of Commercial Truck Drivers-just 61 years of age. Drivers are dying roughly 15-20 years before the average American, largely due to factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, poor sleep and smoking.

Project-61 Mission Statement: “Project 61 aims to improve the life expectancy of CDL drivers by raising awareness, providing resources, and educating drivers on a healthier lifestyle.”

Law enforcement personnel in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. will conduct commercial motor vehicle inspections, educate drivers and motor carriers about the importance of brake safety, and provide brake inspection and violation data to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) for this year’s Brake Safety Week, scheduled for Aug. 24-30.

Note: CVSA also offers resources to help drivers, motor carriers, owner-operators and mechanics prepare for Brake Safety Week.

CVSA-certified inspectors will carry out routine inspections of commercial motor vehicles throughout the week, with a particular focus on brake systems and components. This year’s brake-safety initiative places additional emphasis on drums and rotors. Problems with brake drums and rotors can reduce a vehicle’s braking effectiveness. Detached fragments of drums or rotors may fall from vehicles during travel, potentially causing damage to other vehicles or leading to injuries or fatalities among the driving public.

Commercial motor vehicles identified with brake-related out-of-service violations, or any other out-of-service violations, will be taken off the road until those violations are resolved.

Throughout Brake Safety Week, inspectors will record information related to commercial motor vehicle inspections, brake systems and components, and brake-related violations, and submit that data to CVSA. In some areas, inspectors will utilize performance-based brake testers (PBBT) to measure vehicle braking performance, and will provide PBBT-specific data to the Alliance. CVSA will compile, examine, and release the findings publicly later this year.

Brake Safety Week aims to improve commercial motor vehicle brake safety across North America by conducting roadside inspections and raising awareness among drivers, mechanics, fleet operators, and owner-operators about proper brake inspection, maintenance, and operation to help prevent crashes.

For most small businesses, the deadline to file the Beneficial Ownership Information Report with the Department of the Treasury is January 1, 2025, in order to comply with the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA). The CTA exists to reduce, or even extinguish, illicit financial activity.

The Act went into effect on January 1, 2024, but only companies created or registered to do business in the US before January 1, 2024, have until January 1, 2025, to file initial reports.

Companies created or registered in 2024, however, have 90 days to file once the registration takes effect.

Anyone refusing to report may be subject to civil penalties of up to $591 per day. They may also face criminal penalties of up to two years imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000.

According to Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen, “The launch of the United States’ beneficial ownership registry marks a historic step forward to protect our economic and national security. Corporate anonymity enables money laundering, drug trafficking, terrorism, and corruption. It harms American citizens and puts law-abiding small businesses at a disadvantage. Having a centralized database of beneficial ownership information will eliminate critical vulnerabilities in our financial system and allow us to tackle the scourge of illicit finance enabled by opaque corporate structures.”

Ultimately, the CTA creates additional transparency in business ownership. This act now requires all reporting companies (which are defined as privately held companies, both domestic and foreign, registered to conduct business in the US) to provide beneficial ownership information with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

A beneficial owner is defined as any individual who owns or controls at least 25% of an organization, or exercises substantial control, directly or indirectly, as:

a senior officer (president, CEO, or general counsel).

a point of authority to appoint or remove senior officers, board members, or those within similar roles.

one who make important decisions regarding the organization’s business, finances, or structures.

Eligible small businesses should be prepared to report their full legal company name, business address, state or jurisdiction where first formed or registered, and taxpayer identification number (plus qualifying identity documents). The beneficial owners will need to be prepared to share their full legal name at birth, home address, and a copy of their US driver’s license or passport.

Much of this same information might be required by the business’s financial institution, in order to gain protection from being used for illegal activities.

Please note: some organizations quality for an exemption. This includes large companies with more than 20 full-time employees in the US and $5 million in gross sales receipts from US-based sources, inactive entities (since before 2020), some non-profits, and small businesses that are members of the National Small Business Association (NSBA).
