Developing custom iOS applications for enterprise customers and projects is a much different experience than developing for the App Store. However, the average price of an App Store app is approximately $1.54, and nearly 54% of all current App Store apps are free. This creates a tremendous gap in perceived value for clients who want custom enterprise applications developed. This presentation takes the experience of a 20+ year technical veteran with experience in mobile, back end services and large scale enterprise web applications and walks through differences between developing applications for the enterprise and explains the reasons why developing an enterprise mobile application costs more than you might think. Developers and consultants may also be interested in hearing ways to explain application development complexities and costs to their prospective clients.

Steve McCoole is a Principal Consultant at Object Partners where he has been focusing on developing an enterprise mobile development practice, delivering applications to client that include: Oracle Retail, The Tile Shop, St. Jude Medical, SICK USA and Donaldson Corporation. He has over 20 years of experience developing solutions from embedded to large-scale Java Enterprise web applications for diverse clients including IBM, Sun, Novell, Best Buy and Thomson Reuters.

Batch processing is a critical aspect of many organizations. Batch jobs can be complicated to do well. Spring Batch 2 can make it easier. During this talk, we will look at the basic concepts of Spring Batch. We will look at the difference between item oriented processing and chunk oriented processing. We will cover the concepts of reading, processing, and writing items. Spring Batch makes testing easy using available open source tools and, since it uses Spring’s dependency injection framework, isolating units of work and mocking are second nature. After an overview of the Spring Batch basics, we will dive right into non-trivial jobs built in Spring Batch. We will see them run, and walk through the configuration and source code. We will see implementations of many of Spring Batch’s key features.

Grails has grown in the last few years from a framework designed to quickly develop and deploy new web applications to being a critical tool for developing production ready enterprise applications. Being built upon Spring, Grails can utilize enterprise ready and proven technologies such as Spring Batch 2 to accelerate development by quickly integrating existing technology and configurations into new applications. In this part of the talk, we will explore the integration of Spring Batch 2 into a Grails application using the Grails Spring Batch plugin. We will review the various configurations options that the plugin exposes by default, how to extend the plugin, and how to reduce Spring Batch job configuration verbosity by using Groovy DSL instead of XML.

The highly-productive Grails web application framework combines the powerful Groovy language with the tried-and-true Spring and Hibernate frameworks. JavaScript client-side frameworks (such as Backbone.js and Angular.js) simplify developing high-power dynamic, cross-browser apps. In this presentation I will discuss combining these two technologies to create a rock-solid Grails RESTful backend application and a full-featured, dynamic JavaScript front-end app. Along the way we’ll learn about how these technologies provide flexiblity in architectures, a clear separation of server and client code, deployment flexibility, and increased testability.

This tech talk will introduce Flex — Adobe’s open source framework for building rich web applications. The presenter will build a Flex application to demonstrate the use of Adobe’s FlexBuilder tool, touching on some highlight features of the Flex framework. Components of that Flex application will then be used to create a desktop AIR application through the use of a Shared Library. To wrap things up, presenter will show how to get started with FlexMonkey — Gorilla Logic’s tool for automating testing of Flex and AIR applications.

Batch processing is sometimes viewed as the “old” approach which is no longer relevant. Most new technologies today focus on real-time functionality. But there are many jobs that work well as a batch job. Long running tasks, repetitive tasks, and tasks reliant upon heavily shared resources all benefit from a batch architecture. Given the large pool of resources familiar with Java, it is natural to look for a solution within this domain. Chad Moller will talk about Spring’s solution to this need: Spring Batch. You will learn when to apply batch processing to your current environment, and you will learn how to leverage Spring Batch to create solutions for these common tasks. Spring Batch provides many batch features out-of-the-box, and you will learn how to best utilize these features to enhance the scalability and reliability of your applications. This talked is geared toward developers interested in learning how Spring Batch can be used in their jobs.

The idea of a tester-developer isn’t new, although they are often hidden in teams as the “automation guru”, the “(testing) tool smith”, or “Senior Test Engineer”. These are testers who have a solid background in QA tools and techniques, but also have a development background and can write automated scripts or even (gasp) help with coding. While agile teams in particular look for people with these skills, this kind of tester can provide great value for groups using any methodology if you know how to take advantage of them. This talk covers what it takes to be a tester-developer and how to foster those talents to take advantage of this kind of person on your team. Based on personal experience and insights from leaders in the QA community, she will show you examples of the value you can derive from embedding your technical testers in the development team and what works to incorporate them most effectively.
