Το παρακάτω είναι ένα άρθρο μου που δημοσιεύθηκε στην ετήσια Ελληνική έκδοση του Economist με τίτλο Η Ελλάδα/Ο Κόσμος το 2013. Δημοσιεύθηκε στην ενότητα “Επιχειρηματικότητα: θετικά παραδείγματα”.

Στο νέο βιβλίο του με τίτλο “Future Perfect” ο Αμερικανός συγγραφέας Steven Johnson υποστηρίζει ότι μια νέα κοινωνική δύναμη αναδεικνύεται στον κόσμο: μια δύναμη που αποτελείται από απλούς ανθρώπους, συνδεδεμένους σε δίκτυα συνεργασίας (online και οffline), που παράγουν αγαθά, ιδέες, υπηρεσίες και κοινωνικά κινήματα, σε ισότιμη βάση.

Παντού, αλλά και στην Ελλάδα, βλέπουμε αυτά τα συνεργατικά δίκτυα να ξεφυτρώνουν δίπλα μας καθημερινά: startups κάθε είδους, χώροι co-working, Kickstarter projects που εξασφαλίζουν χρηματοδότηση από απλούς ανθρώπους, εκδηλώσεις και συναντήσεις που οργανώνονται και συντονίζονται online “στο φτερό”, είναι λίγα μόνο παραδείγματα. Όσους συμμετέχουν σε αυτά τα νέα δίκτυα ομότιμης συνεργασίας, ο Johnson τους ονομάζει Peer Progressives (ομότιμους προοδευτικούς), και διαβλέπει ότι είναι η μόνη σοβαρή πρόταση διεξόδου στο παρωχημένο βιομηχανικό μοντέλο οργάνωσης των δυτικών κοινωνιών.

Μετά από 1,5 περίπου χρόνο λειτουργίας του Taxibeat στην Αθήνα, μπορώ να έχω τη βάσιμη υποψία ότι η υπόθεση των Peer Progressives δεν είναι απλώς μια φαντασίωση. Με το Taxibeat δημιουργήσαμε μια πλατφόρμα πάνω από την οποία οι ίδιοι οι χρήστες των υπηρεσιών ταξί μπορούν να επηρεάσουν την ποσότητα και ποιότητα της παρεχόμενης υπηρεσίας. Ο πελάτης βαθμολογεί τον οδηγό για την ποιότητα των υπηρεσιών του, ενώ με την επιλογή του να καλέσει τον έναν ή τον άλλο οδηγό, δείχνει την προτίμηση του σε αυτούς που, π.χ. διαθέτουν wi-fi στο αυτοκίνητο, ή παιδικά καθίσματα, ή μιλούν Αγγλικά. Έτσι, η προσφορά υπηρεσιών βελτιώνεται και προσαρμόζεται στις ανάγκες των χρηστών της - σχεδόν σε πραγματικό χρόνο.

Η μέχρι τώρα επιτυχία του Taxibeat στηρίζεται στο γεγονός ότι οι χρήστες των υπηρεσιών ταξί ήταν παραπάνω από πρόθυμοι να το κάνουν αυτό. Με βάση τα στοιχεία μας, σε πάνω από το 65% των δρομολογίων που γίνονται μέσω του Taxibeat, οι πελάτες βαθμολογούν τους οδηγούς που τους εξυπηρέτησαν. Ίσως αυτός ο αριθμός να μην λέει πολλά σε κάποιους. Σκεφτείτε όμως μόνο ότι, στα περισσότερα κοινωνικά δίκτυα που απαιτείται η συμμετοχή των χρηστών για τη δημιουργία κάποιας αξίας (π.χ. Wikipedia, Ebay, Reddit), ισχύει ο νόμος Pareto: το πολύ 20% των χρηστών συμμετέχει στο 80% του περιεχομένου που παράγεται.

Με λίγα λόγια, οι χρήστες του Taxibeat ξεπέρασαν κάθε προσδοκία συμμετοχής σε μια υπηρεσία με κοινωνικά χαρακτηριστικά. Το μεγάλο αυτό ποσοστό σηματοδοτεί πολύ περισσότερα πράγματα. Όποιος βαθμολογεί έναν οδηγό του taxibeat, ουσιαστικά το κάνει για να βοηθήσει όλους τους άλλους που θα τον ξαναδούν διαθέσιμο. Αυτή η διάθεση αλληλοβοήθειας δείχνει ότι, όταν οι άνθρωποι έχουν τα μέσα, κάνουν ό,τι μπορούν για να αναπτύξουν το κοινωνικό τους κεφάλαιο.

Τι σχέση μπορεί να έχουν όλα αυτά με την Ελλάδα και τη σημερινή κρίση; Ίσως τίποτα, ίσως και πολλά. Πιστεύω ότι η ανάπτυξη των συνεργατικών δικτύων, έτσι όπως τη βλέπουμε να συμβαίνει σήμερα σε πολλές πόλεις της Ελλάδας, αθόρυβα, μπορεί να επανασυνδέσει τον σπασμένο κοινωνικό ιστό. Δεν πρόκειται για κάτι που θα συμβεί με μια σωστή ή λάθος πολιτική ή κυβερνητική επιλογή. Είναι κάτι που συμβαίνει εν αγνοία όλων αυτών.

Μικροί επιχειρηματίες και κοινωνικές ομάδες προσπαθούν να δώσουν λύσεις σε προβλήματα, και τα καταφέρνουν μέσα από δίκτυα αλληλοβοήθειας, χωρίς βοήθεια από το κράτος αλλά και τις μεγάλες επιχειρήσεις (όπως π.χ. τράπεζες) που αγνούν όλο αυτό το γίγνεσθαι. Εμείς στο Taxibeat για παράδειγμα, τους πρώτους μήνες μας στεγασθήκαμε στο Colab (το πρώτο co-working space της Αθήνας) όταν ακόμα δεν είχαμε αρκετούς πόρους για να νοικιάσουμε γραφεία, ενώ την πρώτη μας μικρή χρηματοδότηση τη λάβαμε από το Openfund, ένα χρηματοδοτικό σχήμα που δημιουργήθηκε μέσα από τις μηνιαίες, αυτο-οργανωνόμενες συναντήσεις του Opencoffee.

Πιστεύω ότι οι Peer Progressives της Ελλάδας έχουν ακόμα πολύ δρόμο να διανύσουν, παρόλα αυτά δείχνουν να είναι η μόνη θετική μας προοπτική. Πολλές φορές, τις καλύτερες, τις δημιουργικότερες επιλογές σου, τις κάνεις όταν είσαι με την πλάτη στον τοίχο. Ελπίζω ότι αυτο θα συμβεί και τώρα.

On startup events, ecosystems and what founders really care for

My good friend Nikos Moraitakis wrote a really good piece yesterday on “the topics you won’t hear on panels”. It was the same day that the Athens Techcrunch meetup event took place so I guess the timing was good.

Nikos thinks that, more than talking about generic issues on these events, issues like culture, strategy, disruption, etc., event organisers should focus more on issues that founders face on their startup daily life. He gives numerous good examples of founders looking for advise and recommendations about e.g. finding a good accountant, or UI designer, or office space, payment solutions etc. He concludes with the thought that he would be looking for events that “feel more like the startups section of Quora”.

While I don’t disagree with the need to organise our startup ecosystem around systems that will help each other on practical “real life” daily needs of a startup, I do think that we need to keep the bar high on keeping the founders’ focus on the big picture of starting and running a business. And public events are one of the few ways to keep the focus on these issues.

First of all, I trust that founders are capable of finding solutions to the problems Nikos mentions - otherwise they wouldn’t be entrepreneurs in the first place. This is basic stuff for an entrepreneur. And with the help of the internet, you just have to be connected with your peers in order to ask for help. If you can Google your need, or ask a question on Quora, or ping your followers on Twitter, Facebook or Google+, then you have high chances to find the solution to your problem.

Another idea that would help a lot, would be to find ways for more in-person, casual, unorganised interactions between members of this ecosystem, mainly by trying to concentrate this community in an area of the city. Imagine like having open coffee meetings, not every month, but every day, every hour. You go out for a coffee or lunch and bump against random people from your community, talk about small stuff, but sometimes really important stuff. And there you could find solutions to trivial tasks and problems from people you see randomly. Serendipity can make miracles. This is a point I tried to make in yesterday’s Techcrunch event, and Mike Butcher illustrated later better than me.

But the really hard task, is staying close to the bigger issues facing you and your startup. For what it’s worth, what defined me as a person and entrepreneur is the culture and values that I’ve built over the last several years. And this culture and values are the driving force behind my every day “small” decisions.

For instance, I need to hire UI designer for my company, so I go out seeking for help. But how can I judge which of my recommended professionals is the right for me? It’s exactly the “high-order” decision I’ve made early enough, that I want my company to be a design-driven company, therefore I need a senior designer with the potential to take over a C-level position in my company, and define the answer to the “what we stand for” question in our market.

And when I’m looking for an office space for my company, it’s exactly this high-order decision and culture that make me decide to invest in this space recommended to me, instead of another. So, there is no “small” need or decision that is not driven by a number high-level decisions (which form our culture) even if these decisions are sometimes made unconsciously.

This is part of a founder’s personal development project. You need to educate yourself constantly and learn from the experience and ideas and learnings of others, and find the right fit for you. Not every advice or insight is good for you, but if you keep exploring the world of ideas and values you will definitely find the right culture for you - and consequently the company that you’re building.

So, coming back to the discussion about events, I think these should be a good opportunity to help founders stay close to this bigger picture. And I am always amazed to go back every now and then and watch Simon Sinek explain why you have to “start with why” building your company. Or, watch Steve Jobs explain why “focusing is about saying no”. This is important stuff for a founder, and the bad thing about these trivial daily tasks is that they increase the distance between you and this “big picture” stuff.

Now, I don’t mean to say that event organisers do a good job on this front - far from that. But still, this is exactly what I would ask from an event organiser: do a really good job of helping me stay close to the big picture, to the most important things in life and business, so I am able to take the right daily decisions based on a culture that makes sense for me and my organisation.

Σε όλη μου τη ζωή ήμουν επιχειρηματίας. Τα τελευταία 8 χρόνια ήταν η εξαίρεση. Η τελευταία μου επιχειρηματική προσπάθεια ξεκίνησε το 1999 και εληξε το 2001. Ήταν ένα τεχνολογικό startup που δημιούργησα επηρεασμένος από τη φούσκα των dot com που έσκασε το 2000. Το δικό μου startup τελείωσε άδοξα ένα χρόνο αργότερα.

Όπως κάθε φορά που κάποιος αποτυγχάνει, έτσι κι εγώ πήρα ένα πολύ σημαντικό μάθημα. Λάθος, πήρα πολλά μαθήματα. Στη δεκαετία που ακολούθησε δοκίμασα πολλά πράγματα δραστηριοποιούμενος στο Internet και τα Social Media.

Για κανένα από αυτά δεν αποφάσισα (παρόλο που μπήκα σε πειρασμούς) να το μετατρέψω σε κανονική επιχείρηση. Κυρίως επειδή οι εμπειρίες που είχα, με βοηθούσαν να καταλάβω που υπήρχε μια βιώσιμη επιχειρηματική ιδέα, και που όχι.

Εδώ και δύο χρόνια ήξερα ότι το μέλλον μου ήταν στις mobile τεχνολογίες. Η αλλαγή που φέρνουν στην οικονομία και την κοινωνία θα είναι πολύ μεγαλύτερη από όσες αλλαγές έχουμε δει μέχρι σήμερα να φέρνει το Web αλλά και τα Social Media μαζί.

Το περασμένο καλοκαίρι, από ένα τυχαίο γεγονός, είχα την ιδέα που τελικά μετεξελίχθηκε σε αυτό που είναι σήμερα το Taxibeat. Παρά την πολύ δύσκολη συγκυρία, σε συνθήκες οικονομικής κρίσης και αποσύνθεσης του κοινωνικού ιστού, αποφάσισα να κάνω ένα μεγάλο βήμα. Να ιδρύσω ένα τεχνολογικό startup και να δώσω στην αγορά μια καινοτόμα υπηρεσία.

Για να υλοποιήσω την ιδέα με βοήθησε ένας γνώριμος από πολλές δουλειές στο παρελθόν, ο Κωστής Σακκάς που κάνει το web development. Ήμασταν ήδη μια ομάδα δουλεμένη και δοκιμασμένη. Επειδή όμως η ιδέα αφορούσε μια mobile εφαρμογή - κάτι που δεν είχαμε ξανακάνει - την ομάδα συμπλήρωσε με ιδανικό τρόπο ο Νίκος Δαμηλάκης, ο iPhone developer της ομάδας μας.

Εξασφαλίσαμε χρηματοδότηση και υποστήριξη από το Openfund (στους ανθρώπους του οποίου χρωστάμε πάρα πολλά) και ξεκινήσαμε να χτίζουμε την υπηρεσία μας από τον φετινό Φλεβάρη. Δουλέψαμε πολύ σκληρά όλο αυτό το διάστημα. Δημιουργήσαμε ένα τεχνολογικό προϊόν με πάρα πολλές τεχνικές προκλήσεις. Ταυτόχρονα δημιουργήσαμε ένα στόλο από ταξί που δεν φανταζόμασταν ούτε στα όνειρα μας όταν ξεκινάγαμε - ανακοινώσεις σύντομα.

Σήμερα είμαστε έτοιμοι να ξεκινήσουμε.

Θεωρητικά, το Taxibeat είναι μια υπηρεσία που σε βοηθά να βρεις εύκολα και γρήγορα ταξί από το κινητό σου και να το καλέσεις. Στην ουσία όμως φιλοδοξούμε να αλλάξουμε τα δεδομένα σε αυτό τον κλάδο. Πιστεύουμε ότι με τη βοήθεια της τεχνολογίας μπορούμε να φέρουμε μια μεγάλη αλλαγή, που θα κάνει καλύτερο και πιο αποτελεσματικό τον τρόπο που μετακινούμαστε στις πόλεις.

Η υπηρεσία αποτελείται από 2 iPhone εφαρμογές, μία για τους οδηγούς ταξί που ανήκουν στο στόλο του Taxibeat, και μία για τους επιβάτες που θα αναζητούν ταξί. Η εφαρμογή για τους επιβάτες θα είναι διαθέσιμη από την Τρίτη το πρωϊ, και θα μπορείτε να βρείτε το direct link από το site μας (ή με αναζήτηση στο iTunes). Γιαυτό για την ώρα δεν υπάρχουν τα σχετικά links στο website.

Είναι ένα project για το οποίο είμαστε πολύ αισιόδοξοι, και οι φιλοδοξίες μας ξεπερνούν τα σύνορα της Ελλάδας. Στην ιστοσελίδα μας έχουμε τη βασική περιγραφή του τι είναι και τι κάνει, ενώ σε επόμενα posts στο blog του Taxibeat θα είμαστε πιο αναλυτικοί.

Θα στείλουμε σχετική ανακοίνωση στα γνωστά Μέσα :-)

With the Spotlight on Andreessen and Horowitz, it was interesting to learn about the firm’s ‘army’ of 20 partners and associates sourcing talent for their portfolio companies, just like VC A&R’s - a term borrowed from Saul Klein of Index Ventures, who got video-interviewed at Midem in Cannes yesterday.

not buying enough is called out as stealing.

It’s more than obvious that the market needs regulation on behalf of the consumers’ interests, defending their right to select their communication channels (like Skype) within the telco’s network.
