Iris pallida variegata

One of the more under rated iris varieties that we think deserves more recognition.

Its flowers may not be a large as some others, however the pale lavender blooms are attractive as well as being fragrant.

For us it is the ease of growing this plant along with the strongly variegated foliage which makes it have a longer seasonal impact in the garden than many other varieties.

Sternbergia Lutea (Autumn Crocus) is just one of a number of bulbs from the species that is well worth a place on the garden. Brilliant yellow flowers in Fall make Sternbergia Lutea (pictured left) is a real stunner.
Try growing Sternbergia Bulbs in a well drained sunny position, or in well drained pots.
Other Sternbergia species worth looking for include: Sternbergia clusiana, Sternbergia fischeriana, Sternbergia greuteriana.

Ficus dammaropsis (Dinner Plate Fig) pictured left is originally from the Highlands of New Guinea and has huge pleated deep green leaves up to 70cm across that emerge a bronze colour, and absolutely spectacular foliage plant. Sometimes called the 'Highland Breadfruit'. Remember that this is from a tropical rainforest, so although it likes the heat, it does not like hot direct sun, or dry conditions, in nature this can grow to be a large tree, in cultivation they tend to reach 5m. Ficus dammaropsis needs protection from frost and is a little difficult to propagate as in nature pollination is by a Fig Wasp, only found in New Guinea.

Fritillaria Sibthorpiana is from Turkey and has attractive elegant yellow flowers.

We love Fritillaria and have grown the one pictured from seed.

Fritillaria Imperialis or 'Crown Imperial' is another great Fritillaria and

of course the 'snakes head fritillaria or Fritillaria meleagris with its chequered flower in either

the red/brown form or the white form make great specimens.
