How to Make a Dreamcatcher and How to Make it Catch Bad Dreams

Dreamcatchers are great to help kids with nightmares. I made some and I want to show you how to make a dreamcatcher too because it was fun and maybe you'll need it one day like us. And you also might need to know how to use it, how to make the dreamcatcher catch those nightmares (we had to learn, it wasn't that easy!).

It all started one day when Adrian came to me saying that he had been having scary dreams and he thought he needed a dreamcatcher. Well, good thing he provided me with the solution to his problem! So I immediately started to find out how to make him one, and it really had to be quick because he did complain every night about scary guys coming in his dreams. I researched and then went out and decided to get colorful twines and decided to make the ring out of sticks, I love the natural look of it.

How to make a Dreamcatcher

-Scroll down for step-by-step images-

Supplies:

Color twine
Sticks (Not too big so you can fold them a little)
Hemp twine (preferible brown to blend with the sticks)
Feathers
Beads

Instructions:

For the ring. Grab about 3 sticks together and with a little bit of hemp twine tie them looping around the sticks several times in both ends and in the center if necessary.
Grab 2 or 3 more sticks and tie them together with the first group. Tie the knots wherever you consider necessary. Don't try to bend the sticks too much at this point.
Continue tying more sticks to the group until you have a long line and you can bend it well enough to make a ring and tie them all back around. The circle we made was about 7-8 inches wide.
For the web. Cut about 10 feet of the color twine and roll it up in a ball.
Tie a knot with one end of the twine around the ring of sticks.
Loop the twine around the ring following the arrows in the graphic below (go first on top of the ring and bring it in from behind it going over the twine again), leave about 1.5" in between each loop, make them tight.
When you reach the first loop again start looping on the middle of the first loose area that was left in-between each loop and pull it tight, continue doing this until you reach the center.
Tie a knot in the middle when you are done weaving the whole ring and cut what's remaining of the twine.
For the feathers and beads. Grab 2 or more feathers and tie a knot around them with twine. You can hang them on the bottom part of the dreamcatcher any length you want. My suggestion is to play with different lengths and hang at least 3 feathers to it.
If you want to add beads, make a knot before looping the bead in so it will stay in position and then make another know afterwards and add another and so on.

Tip: It can be made with so many different things, you can also add beads looping them in the web while making it and add special details that the person will identify with like long strips of fabrics hanging, felt shapes, etc.

Tips for how to make a Dreamcatcher catch bad dreams

After I made him the dreamcatcher, we hung it on one of walls by his bed and tried it. He woke up the next morning saying: Mami, the dreamcatcher didn't work. Oh no! I wasn't really prepared for it not to work!! So we tried different things for several days until it did finally work, but it took us one full week while those bad dreams kept showing up! So here is how we recommend to use a dreamcatcher effectively:

Hang it over the head of your bed. It will be the closest to your head were your dreams occur. We hung it over the side of it the first time and we believe that wasn't helping at all.
Make sure it is clean. If you just made it, it will be clean but as time goes by remember to clean it once in a while.
Make a prayer every night before going to sleep. I sat with Adrian and talked to the dreamcatcher asking it to help get rid of the bad dreams
Be specific. We said out loud what things were the "Bad and scary" parts of the dreams so the dreamcatcher would know exactly what to go for.
Try to think about good and fun things before going to sleep. And lastly, you also have to help a little by thinking good feelings before going to bed, the more you help the dreamcatcher the better!

After all those days, these were the steps we covered and it finally worked! Adrian is happy with his dreamcatcher and hasn't had huge nightmares anymore. If he comes up again with one I'll try to clean it and help him think about good things again. Oh and of course I had to make Maya one too, so the pink one in the pictures is hers!

Tutorial para hacer un Atrapasueños y cómo hacer que atrape las pesadillas

Los atrapasueños (o atrapapesadillas) son amuletos que ayudan mucho a los niños con las pesadillas y les quiero enseñar como hacer un atrapapesadilla a ustedes también ya que es divertido y a lo mejor algún día les va a servir de ayuda como a nosotros. Ya también necesitarán una pequeña guía de cómo usarlos para que atrapen bien esos sueños feos (no fué fácil para nosotros, tuvimos que aprender como hacerlo!).

Todo empezó un día en que Adri me dijo que estaba teniendo pesadillas y que necesitaba un atrapasueños Me gustó que me dió la solución a su problema de inmediato por lo menos y a mi que me gusta "hacer" cosas me puse de inmediato a buscar como hacer uno. Y fué rápido todo porque de verdad que el todas las mañanas se quejaba mucho de que tenía unos tipos que daban miedo en sus sueños... Pobrecito! Entonces averigüé y le hice uno con cordón de color y un anillo hecho de palitos de arbol que me gustó mucho.

Como hacer un Atrapasueños (Dreamcatcher)

Materiales:

Cordón de color
Palitos naturales (Que no sean muy grandes para que se doblen un poquito)
Hilo de cáñamo o encerado (preferiblemente marrón para que se confunda con los palitos)
Plumas
Cuentas o bolitas

Instrucciones:

Para hacer el aro. Agarra como 3 palitos juntos y con un poquito del hilo amárralos juntos en las puntas y en em medio si es necesario.
Agarra otros 2 o 3 palitos más y átalos al primer grupo de palitos en al punta. Has mas nuditos donde creas necesario para que se mantengan unidos los palitos No trates de doblarlos mucho toadavía.
Continúa atando más palitos al grupo hasta que tengas una tira larga y la puedas doblar para que se haga un aro y entonces átalo bien. El aro quCuando termines has un
Para hacer el tejido. Corta como unos 10 pies del cordón de color y enróllalo en una pelotica.
Haz un nudo con una punta del cordón en el aro.
Ahora pasa el cordón por el aro según como indican las flechitas en el gráfico de arriba (por encima del aro, luego sácalo de atrás y vuélvelo a pasar por encima del mismo cordón). deja como unas 1.5" entre cada vuelta y ponle tensión.
Cuando ya le hayas dado la vuelta al aro continúa enrollando el cordón de la misma manera pero ahora por el medio del cordón que quedó entre cada vuelta anterior. Continúa haciendo esto hasta que llegues al medio.
Haz un nudo con el mismo cordón en el miedo bien apretado para que no se salga todo el tejido y corta lo que quede de cordón.
Para la parte de las plumas y las peloticas. Agarra unas 2 plumas juntas y amárralas con el cordón. Luego amárrala a la parte de abajo del atrapasueños a cualquier altura. Mi sugerencia es que las cuelgues todas a diferentes alturas y al menos 3 cordones con plumas.
Si quieres añadir peloticas o cuentas haz un nudo antes de meter la cuenta para que se sostenga en su lugar y sigue añadiendo como más te parezca.

Tip: Se puede hacer de muchas maneras, también puedes añadir cuentas mientras que estás tejiendo lo de adentro o añadir tiras de tela colgadas en la parte de abajo o figuras de fieltro... Cualquier cosa que sientas que identifique a la persona que será dueña del atrapasueños.

Tips para usar un atrapasueños

Después de que hice el atrapasueños lo colgamos en la pared al lado de su cama y lo probamos una noche. A la mañana siguiente se despertó diciendo: Mami, el atrapasueños no sirvió. Ay no! La verdad no estaba preparada para hacer algo más allá del mismo amuleto, así que probamos con varias cosas por muchos días hasta que al fin funcionó! Pero nos tomó como una semana en que el pobre seguía con sus pesadillas y se levantaba diciéndo que no se habían espantado. Así que aquí les dejo mis recomendaciones para usarlo y que de verdad se vayan esos sueños feos!

Cuelga el atrapasueños arriba de la cabecera de la cama. Estará ubicado lo más cerca de tu cabeza donde ocurren los sueños. Nosotros lo colgamos en la pared de al lado y como que no servía mucho.
Asegúrate de que esté limpio. Si apenas lo acabas de hacer sabes que está limpio pero mientras pasa el tiempo acuérdate de limpiarlo de vez en cuando.
Todas las noches antes de dormir hazle una oración. Yo me senté con Adri y le hablamos al atrapasueños directamente pidiéndole que porfavor se llevara esos sueños malos.
Se específico. Le dijimos en voz alta cuáles eran específicamente las partes de los sueños que le daba miedo.
Piensa en cosas bonitas antes de dormir. Por último hay que ayudar al atrapasueños pensando ya desde el principio en algo que nos guste mucho.

Todos estos pasos los intentamos uno por uno durante todos esos días y al final por fin funcionó! Adrian está contento con su atrapapesadillas y no ha tenido sueños feos desde hace tiempo. Si viene alguna pesadilla de nuevo trataré de limpiarlo y ayudarle a pensar en cosas bonitas otra vez. Ah y porsupuesto después le hice uno a Mayita también, el rosado es el de ella!

A Letter for Mom on Mother's Day

I really like this photo of my mom, it makes me realize what an influence she has made on me, I see myself there clearly. And I love that.

Mami,

You have influenced me always. Ever since you started taking us every weekend to the museums and to the theater; ever since you were taking your camera everywhere and you had your own home photo-studio; ever since you left for months to study in Europe while I spent time with grandma.

Ever since you made me try all types of instrument classes, dancing classes, sports and anything there was so I could choose a favorite.

Ever since you decided to get a Master's degree, and take us along with you for 2 years to the US where we learned a new language and we broadened our whole world.

Even when you were working day and night as an acclaimed architect and we got to attend many Library Building inaugurations that YOU designed (You made us so proud and what a way to show us that you can accomplish anything you desire in life!).

Ever since you kept telling me that you thought I would love to go to college for Graphic Design (Moms really know everything!) and then you kept telling me to move out of the country and learn learn learn...

All these amazing life experiences have influenced me. I am now an independent, strong, artistically inclined, passionate woman and mother and I owe this all to you.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I want to say thank you once again for everything, for teaching me all these traits that now I am passing along to Adrian and Maya. So remember that you are still Powerful and Fearless and that because of you, there will be many more generations to continue what you have taught.

Una carta a mi Mami en el día de la Madre

Me gusta mucho la primera foto de arriba de mi mamá, me hace darme cuenta de la influencia que ha tenido en mí, me veo claramente reflejada ahí, y eso me encanta.

Mami,

Desde siempre me has influenciado. Desde que nos llevabas todos los fines de semana a los museos y al teatro; desde cuando llevabas tu cámara para todos lados y hasta tenías tu estudio de fotografía en la casa; desde que te fuiste a Europa a estudiar y mientras tanto pasé un tiempo en casa de mi abuela.

Desde que me metiste en cuanta clase había, de música, de instrumentos, de deporte y demás para que experimentara y escogiera mi favorito.

Desde que decidiste obtener un Masters en Estados Unidos y llevarnos contigo por 2 años a aprender un nuevo idioma y a que se nos abriera el mundo y se nos ampliaran los horizontes.

Incluso desde cuando estabas trabajando mucho como una arquitecta famosa y fuimos contigo a la inauguración de muchos edificios de bibliotecas diseñados por tí (Nos hiciste muy orgullosas y además nos demostraste que ¡se puede lograr todo lo que desees en la vida!)

Y desde que me dijiste: Hija yo creo que a ti te gustaría la carrera de diseño gráfico (¡La verdad las mamás lo saben todo!!) y después me seguías diciendo que me fuera a otro país y así aprendiera mucho más...

Todas estas experiencias de vida maravillosas me han influenciado mucho. Ahora soy una mamá y una mujer independiente, fuerte, artística, apasionada y todo esto gracias a ti.

Y no lo tendría de ninguna otra manera.

Te quiero dar las gracias Mami, una vez más por todo lo que me has enseñado e inculcado, ahora es mi turno de enseñar todo esto y de influenciar a Adri y a Maya. Así que acuérdate que eres muy influyente y valiente y que por tí seguirán muchas generaciones que continuarán este camino.

Primero se van a la página de Ebates.

During Hispanicize I got to attend a private luncheon organized by Latina Mom Bloggers and P&G. The profesional stylist and image-maker Irma Martinez partnered with P&G's campaign: Have you Tried This Yet? And she was there to give us all some fashion tips for this season...

Here are some of her tips:

Don't need to spend lots of money on your clothing, make sure you always follow the best fits for your type of body and develop a style according to that (See tips below)
For girls with rectangular shape bodies the peplum style is great (the ones that have ruffles attached to the waist line)
Crossed tops if you have an hour-glassed body (big bust) and if you add pencil line skirt it will look even better
Use pants to the waist if you have a circular body and top it with a wide flowy blouse
For girls with pear shaped bodies she recommends smaller tops and high waist pants
Esmerald is the color of the year!
Black and White, tuxedo jackets and pleated skirts are IN!
Bright color skinny pants or floral skinny pants are not just for models, they are very trendy and you just need to find a good top for them

She also shared some tips with the P&G products

The Have You Tried this? program from P&G provides us with bright ideas to improve their everyday, I loved how she gave us ideas to use them in different ways. The one tip that I really loved is Use a little cup with Downy Shimmer Unstopables in your clothing drawer and by your shoes and it will make them smell so so good!

En Hispanicize tuve la oportunidad de ir a un almuerzo privado organizado por Latina Mom Bloggers y Procter and Gamble (P&G). La estilista profesional Irma Martinez está asociada con la P&G y su campaña ¿Ya Probaste Esto?. Ella estaba ahí para darnos muchas ideas y tips de moda para la temporada...

Aquí están algunos de sus tips:

No hay necesidad de gastar tanto dinero en ropa, siempre asegúrate de saber que le va mejor a tu tipo de cuerpo y desarrolla on estilo de acuerdo a eso (Vean los tips en los siguientes puntos)
Para chicas de cuerpo con forma rectangular (sin muchas curvas), el estilo péndulo es muy bueno (es el que tiene faralaos justo en la cintura)
Para las chicas de cuerpo estilo reloj de arena (con bastante busto) les queda bien usar las blusas cruzadas en frente y si las combinan con falda tipo lápiz aún mejor
Usa pantalones a la cintura si tienes un cuerpo circular (con barriguita) y ponte una blusa holgada encima
Para las que tienen el cuerpo estilo pera (bastantes caderas) ella recomienda blusas cortas y pantalones de talle alto
El color esmeralda es el color del año
El blanco y negro, las chaquetas estilo esmoquin y las faldas plisadas están muy de moda
Los pantalones pegaditos ya sea de colores vibrantes o de estampados florales no son sólo par modelos, con tal de que consigas una blusa que le combine bien, todo el mundo se lo puede poner

También compartió unos tips para usar los productos P&G

El programa ¿Ya Probaste Esto? nos ayuda a todos en la casa y en el cuidado personal, a mi me encantó que Irma compartió varios tips de como ella los usa de diferente manera, la que me gustó más fué: Agarra un potecito lleno de Downy Shimmer Unstopables y colócalo en su gaveta de ropa o en el closet junto a los zapatos y sejará todo oliendo muy rico!

Yo recibí una cesta de productos para probarlos yo misma y tengo mis favoritos, vean las fotos de los productos arriba en detalle y se darán cuenta cuales son!

Today I am very excited to be part of a Blog Hop with the Latinas for Latino Literature celebrating “El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros” (Children’s Day / Book Day) with many latino authors and illustrators. 20 days of celebration, from April 10th to April 30th, 20 authors or illustrators in 20 blogs!

One of the very firsts books I got for Adri was the Gracias - Thanks book by Pat Mora and illustrated by John Parra and we love it so much, sometimes we read it and then play "I spy" with it because the illustrations are so rich and full of fun nice details. I am very honored to have the award-winning illustrator John Parra here in my casita for all of you... Grab a cup of coffee or tea and learn about the meaning of "Día" and more about John Parra:

April's Día Celebration

April is a wonderful month filled with special meaning and celebration. In fact the origins of the name April is very meaningful as it is derived from Latin, from the verb meaning “to open.” Its expanded explanation in the Roman calendar associates it as a celebratory time of year when "fruits and flowers and animals and seas and lands do open." What a wonderful and fitting description to now include as we celebrate with our youth, the opening up and reading of books for “El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros” (Children’s Day / Book Day). This event, Día, is a time when we honor kids and bring them to read and celebrate literature, together as ALL children, from all cultures, backgrounds, and languages. By opening up their world through this amazing celebration we participate and encourage them to expand their mind’s imagination through a rich and diverse cultural history.

Recently I had the privilege to illustrate artwork for two children’s books that share in the spirit of “Día”. The first book is entitled, When Thunder Comes, written by J Patrick Lewis. The book profiles seventeen civil rights luminaries from around the world, each represented in portraits, showcasing their struggle and commitment to justice, peace, and tolerance. One portrait from the book is that of activist, Sylvia Mendez, whose dedication to learning and education helped challenge society to become the first Hispanic in the United States to be integrated into a segregated, all white, school system. Her courage and results soon opened up the possibilities for other people of color to the opportunity for a better, respectful, and more diverse education for all.

The other recently illustrated children’s book of mine is, Round is a Tortilla, written by Rosanna Thong. The book focuses on learning and identifying a world of shapes all around us, as shown in a celebration of Hispanic and Latino culture and identity. Though each of these books takes a different look at subjects, they both share a love of reading, learning, and culture supported through our “El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros” events.

In celebration of Día de Los Libros, three original children’s book paintings of mine are going on display in Richmond, Virginia, at Broad Rock Branch Library, seen with fellow children's-book art from illustrators Joe Cepeda and Lila Weaver along with author Meg Medina on hand to dedicate and discuss the exhibition. The art will be on view from April 26 to May 31 of this year.

As a children’s book illustrator, I am always amazed how reading and learning can transform people’s lives, give them hope and meaning, and open them and those around them to actual change. It is this power of literacy and diversity that we celebrate and honor in Día. May you enjoy and celebrate yours!

John Parra is an award winning illustrator, artist, educator, and designer. His artwork has been showcased and displayed in numerous gallery shows and museum exhibitions throughout the United States. He has also received honors and accolades from The American Library Association (ALA), The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, The New York’s Society of Illustrators, The Art Directors Club of New York, REFORMA, The Christophers, and Latino Literacy Now.

Hoy estoy muy emocionada de ser parte del Blog Hop organizado por Latinas for Latino Literature para celebrar El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros con muchos autores e ilustradores latinos. Son 20 días de celebración, del 10 de abril al 30 de abril, 20 autores o ilustradores en 20 blogs!

Uno de los primeros libros que Adri tuvo fué el libro llamado Gracias-Thanks de Pat mora ilustrado por John Parra y nos encanta, muchas veces después de leerlo jugamos "Veo Veo" con el porque las ilustraciones son tan chéveres y llenas de muchos detalles. Yo me siento super honrada de tener a este ilustrador al cual admiro muchísimo John Parra aquí en mi casita virtual! Así que agarren su cafecito o su té y aprendan el significado del "Día" y aprendan más acerca de John Parra:

Celebración del "Día" en Abril

Abril es un mes maravilloso lleno de un un significado especial y de celebraciones. De hecho el orígen de la palabra abril es muy significativo porque se deriva del verbo “abrir” en Latin. Su definición ampliada en el calendario romano se asocia con la época de celebración del año en que “las frutas, las flores, animales, mares y tierra de hecho se abren.” Que maravilla de descripción y que perfecta le queda para ahora también celebrar la juventud, el abrir libros y leerlos para “El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros” . Este evento es un día en el que homenageamos a los niños y los traemos a celebrar la literatura todos juntos como niños, de todas las culturas y de todos los idiomas. Al abrirles el mundo a través de esta celebración tan maravillosa estamos fomentando y estimulando a que la imaginación de sus mentes se expandan a través de una historia cultural muy rica y diversa.

Recientemente tuve el privilegio de ilustrar para 2 libros infantiles que comparten este espíritu de celebración del “Día”. El primero se titula, When Thunder Comes (Cuando llega el Trueno), escrito por J Patrick Lewis. El libro exhibe a diecisiete celebridades del derecho civil alrededor del mundo, cada una de ellas tiene un retrato, donde se muestra su lucha y su compromiso con la justicia, la paz y la tolerancia. Uno de los retratos del libro es de la activista Sylvia Mendez, la cual, por su dedicación y su educación ayudó a retar a la sociedad y se convirtió en la primera hispana en los Estados Unidos que integraron en un sistema escolar todo de raza blanca. Su valor y los resultados que logró rapidamente abrieron otras posibilidades de oportunidades para una educación mejor, más diversa y con más respeto para otras personas de color y para todos en general.

El otro libro que acabo de ilustrar es, Round is a Tortilla (Redonda es una Tortilla), escrito por Rosanna Thong. El libro se enfoca en aprender todas las formas alrededor de nosotros, mostradas en celebraciones de la cultura e identidad hispana y latina. Aunque cada uno de estos libros tiene temas diferentes, los dos comparten el amor a la lectura, el aprendizaje y la cultura apoyados en los eventos del “El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros.”

Para la celebración del Día de Los Libros, 3 ilustraciones de libros originales mías serán exhibidas en Richmond, Virginia, en la biblioteca de Broad Rock Branch, estará junto a otros trabajos de compañeros ilustradores Joe Cepeda y Lila Weaver y también la autora Meg Medina estará disponible para hablar acerca de la exhibición. El arte estará allí desde el 26 de abril hasta el 31 de mayo de este año.

Como ilustrador de libros infantiles siempre me impresiona ver como el leer y el aprender pueden transformar la vida de las personas, les puede dar esperanza y sentido y hasta abrirlas a un verdadero cambio. Este poder de conocimiento y diversidad es el que celebramos y al que rendimos honores en el Día de los Niños. Espero disfruten y celebren con los suyos!

John Parra es un ilustrador galardonado, artista, educador y diseñador. Su obra se ha exhibido en numerosas galerías y exposiciones en museos alrededor de los Estados Unidos. Hispanicize 2013 Recap #1

Hispanicize is over and I still can't believe it. I now have tons of photos, tons of business cards and tons of great memories to keep!

As I was leaving to catch the plane I was on the phone with a friend and he said: Oh you're going to a conference in Miami now? Those conferences are never in a place like Minnesota?? They are always somewhere fun... Have a great vacation! And it's true, nothing against Minnesota but Miami is quite some destination (Not only to vacation -Ahem- I did work!). And I think it's the perfect place for Hispanicize.

Everything there breathes latino, everywhere you go there is latin food, and latin music in the background -- which if you ask my sister at any moment in time she will be able to tell you the name of the artist, the album and the name of the song playing, all this while she is having a deep conversation with you!

So now you get the setting right? (Oh add some good humidity too!) Now add lots and lots of people from all over! The first night we got to go to dinner with the people from Lowe's who sponsored us, and the next day we were able to check out the booth which was amazing considering the space. I saw a before and after and couldn't believe it. Too bad I didn't take pictures of before! But it did make me think more about our little patio, it needs so much love and even though it't little I know it can get nice and cozy with the right decoration.

The planters that you see in the photos below are an idea featured on the Lowe's Creative Ideas magazine, I really like them but they seem a little hard to make for me and my abilities. Although now that I keep looking at these photos and I see my poor I-need-some-love patio, I'm thinking my abilities might improve and I might make these planters! What do you think? Should I???

The booth was really a little oasis to get some rest and relaxation. The furniture was pretty cool too, maybe I should just replicate all that for my patio!?

At Hispanicize there was also Art being made everyday, I loved seeing a different artist painting outdoors (donating their time and art for charity), I then realized I didn't take pictures of all of them :( You see, at the conferences it's quite hard to be in the moment + share on social media + take all the photos you're going to want for the posts. Can't do it all, but believe me, the art was amazing, just by these photos below you can tell right?

Going there with my sister was such a great experience, I felt I could introduce her to so many friends that I tell her about but she never met before plus now that she is blogging too, I can share a lot more with her and she is even considering opening a new blog, it would be health/fitness related which is something she is very passionate about.

There were tons of parties, I mean every night there was something going on, not only one thing but several cause Hispanicize also involves the music and film industry, so there were movie previews and big shows like Jessie and Joy! I was sad I couldn't make it to that show for example but we went to visit my family that night and had a great time.

In this post are some photos of many friends and this is very little, maybe next time I will make a video with slide shows of just people photos, I think that would be cool!

I'll come back next week with more Hispanicize, the yacht party, beautiful designs everywhere and products I saw!

Hispanicize se acabó y todavía no lo creo. Me quedaron un montón de fotos, de tarjetas de presentación y grandes memorias que guardar.

En el camino al aeropuerto estaba hablando con un amigo por el teléfono y me decía: Ah, vas a Miami a una conferencia? Oye pero esas conferencias nunca son en Minnesota por ejemplo?? Siempre son en lugares divertidos... Que tengas buenas vacaciones! Y es verdad, nada en contra de Minnesota, pero es que Miami es un destino muy chévere (No sólo para vacaciones -Ajem- Yo si trabajé!). Y me parece que es el lugar perfecto para Hispanicize.

Casi todo lo que se respira allá es latino, a donde quiera que vayas hay comida latina y música latina de fondo; por cierto que si andas con mi hermana y en cualquier momento le preguntas que canción están tocando, ella te puede decir el nombre, el cantante, el albúm, etc! Y todo esto mientras que está teniendo una conversación muy profunda contigo! Jaja!

Entonces ahora sienten el feeling no? (Ah y añadan un poco de humedad!) Y ahora agreguen mucha gente de todos lados! La primera noche fuimos a cenar con la gente de Lowe's nuestro sponsor, y el día siguiente pudimos ver el stand que tenían preparado el cual me sorprendió, para el espacio que había hicieron un diseño super lindo, yo que lo vi antes y después les digo, que estuvo maravilloso, que lástima que no le tomé fotos al "antes". El diseño me hizo pensar en mi propio patio porque es un espacio mas o menos del mismo tamaño y está que necesita de todos, se que una buena decoración lo haría ver bello.

Las jardineras que ven en las fotos aquí en el post son una de las ideas que está en la revista Ideas Creativas de Lowe's, la verdad es que me encantan pero me parecieron muy dificiles para hacerlas yo. Aunque ahora que me la he pasado viendo y viendo estas fotos y veo mi pobre patiecito que necesita cariño estoy cambiando de opinión, creo que si las quiero hacer! Que dicen? Las hago??

El stand si parecía un oasis para ir a relajarse y descansar. Los muebles también estaban muy chéveres, debería de decorar mi patio tal cual!!?

En Hispanicize también había arte todos los días, me encantó ver todos los días a un artista diferente pintando al aire libre (donando su tiempo y arte a caridad), y me di cuenta que no les tomé fotos a todos :( Ya ven, es que en las conferencias es un poco dificil vivir el momento, compartir en las redes sociales y además tomar mil quinientas fotos para después, no, que dificil, no se puede hacer todo! Pero créanme, con estas fotos que les traje aquí (ver arriba) se deleitarán y se dan una buena idea.

Fué una experiencia muy chévere ir con mi hermana, es la segunda conferencia que vamos juntas pero esta vez fué mucho más gente y pude presentarle a tantos amigos y amigas de las que siempre les cuento y además ahora compartimos aún más ya que ella está blogueando también y quiere abrir un blog nuevo de salud y ejercicios lo cual es algo que a ella le fascina.

Hubo muchas fiestas, todas las noches había algo y no solamente una cosa sino varias a la ve porque como Hispanicize también involucra la música y el cine latino habían previews de películas y shows de gent como Jessie y Joy. Yo no pude ir a ese concierto pero nos fuimos a ver a mi familia esa noche y la pasamos muy rico.

3 Amigas together! Las 3 amigas juntas!!

En todo el post pueden ver una cuantas foticos de gente y de amigas y son tan poquitas las que tengo, creo que la conferencia que viene hago un slide show con muchas fotos solo de gente! Que les parece?

La semana que viene vuelvo y les enseño más de Hispanicize, que todavía me quedan muchas fotos, de otras fiestas, de la fiesta del yate, de muchos diseños bellos que vi!

It seems that my Instagram is always full with these categories: Kids, People, Places, Crafts, Design and Food. But I think they all can be under one big category: Moments, which covers everything, because Instagram is all about capturing every moment right? I picked some of my favorite Instagram moments since January which was my last Instagram Amor post.

Al parecer mi Instagram está siempre lleno de imágenes bajo las siguientes categorías: Niños, Gente, Lugares, Manualidades, Diseño y Comida. Pero todo está bajo una gran categoría: Momentos, la cual cubre todo porque Instagram se trata de capturar cada momento no? Hoy escogí mis momentos favoritos de mi Instagram desde Enero que fué la última vez que compartí mi post de Instagram Amor.

Every time we visit a park here in San Diego I am reminded that we live in such a nice place and I appreciate the city even more after our move.

Cada vez que visitamos un parque nuevo aquí en San Diego me quedo loca porque es preciosísimo y me hace recordar que de verdad vivimos en un sitio muy especial y que que bueno que nos mudamos aquí.

And how to forget when my dad came to visit?? He loved it and wants to come back, we had lots of great family time.

Y cómo olvidarme de los momentos en que mi papá vino de visita? Le encantó y quiere regresar pronto, tuvimos muchos momentos chéveres en familia.

Dulce de Leche Trifle

I have a little obsession with all jars, I really like them and I love the fact that now a days I see all types of desserts made in jars. It just makes the food look so personalized and so much for inviting to have one of those dessert jars for yourself!

So I decided to make my own dessert on a jar: Dulce de Leche Triffle. In fact I made 2 desserts in a jar and I already have plans to make another one. The second one I made was for Spoonful, I'll share more photos of that one here soon too but for now take a look at deliciousness, super yumminess Dulce de Leche Trifle.

And guess what? It's very easy to make!

Dulce de Leche Trifle

10 small meringues broken into pieces (with your hands)
1 tub of of whipped cream (about 2 cups)
About 2 cups or more of fresh strawberries chopped very small and blueberries (you can replace with any fresh fruit)
1 cup of dulce de leche (I like to buy the one that comes that's easy to squeeze out)
Pretty Jars (4 jars to be more specific)

Start with a layer of meringues, then the fruit, the add the dulce de leche (squeeze in a good amount!) and finally the whipped cream, make sure you get at least 2 times of all of the layers so the jar looks well rounded with lots of layers. The mix of crisp and soft textures of this dessert is the best! Oh and the dulce de leche flavor combined with everything else there... Sigh!

While making these desserts I also realized and confirmed how I really love to cook sweets, I like to cook a little bit of everything but I am definitely more inclined to cook desserts and to make them look pretty because what I enjoy the most of all is styling the photo, shooting it and well, editing it of course, so it's the whole package all together, I LOVE this! I hope you enjoy the photos and the dessert as much as I did!

Tengo una pequeña obsesión con frascos, me encantan y me encanta que ahora está de moda hacer postres en frascos, los he visto mucho. La presentación de un postre en un frasco lo hace más personal y especial que sea uno solito de esos para tí!

Así que decidí hacer mi propio postre en un frasco : Trifle de Dulce de Leche. De hecho hice 2 postres en frascos, el otro lo hice para Spoonful, ya les traeré más fotos de ese pronto, pero por ahora disfruten de este deliciosísimo Trifle de Dulce de Leche.

Y saben qué? Es super fácil de hacer también!

Trifle de Dulce de Leche

10 suspiros pequeños rotos en pedacitos (con las manos)
1 pote de crema batida (como 2 tazas aprox)
Aproximadamente 2 tazas de fresas picadas en pedacitos pequeños y arándanos (se puede reemplazar con cualquier otra fruta fresca)
1 taza de dulce de leche (a mi me gusta la que viene en botellita lista para exprimir)
Frascos bonitos (4 frascos para ser más exactos)

Empieza poniendo una capa de suspiros, luego la fruta, luego el dulce de leche (no escatimes y exprime un buen!) y finalmente la crema batida, asegúrate de repetir cada capa al menos 2 veces en el frasco para que se vea más bonito el frasco. La mezcla de texturas suaves con texturas crujientes es lo mejor! Ah y el sabor del dulce de leche combinado con todo esto... Ummmm!

Después de hacer estos postres me di cuenta de cuanto me gusta cocinar dulces, a mi me gusta cocinar un poquito de todo pero definitivamente que me inclino más por los dulces y me gusta acomodarlos bonitos porque lo que más más me gusta es diseñar la foto, tomar la foto y bueno, editarla por supuesto, todo el paquete junto, ME ENCANTA! Espero que disfruten las fotos y el postre tanto como yo!

I've been kind of quite this week here and this is the reason! I've been preparing to go next week to Miami for Hispanicize thanks to Lowe's. In fact my sister is also coming to represent Dari Design Studio, so we are trying to squeeze in lots of work this week since we're not going to be working full time, we leave next Monday and I'm so excited! Hispanicize, allá voy!

He estado un poquito callada esta semana aquí en el blog y esta es la razón. La semana que viene estaré de viaje en Miami para la conferencia Hispanicize gracias a Lowe's. De hecho mi hermana también irá representando a Dari Design Studio así que estamos tratando de meter todo lo que podamos de trabajo esta semana ya que la siguiente no tendremos casi tiempo., nos vamos el mismo lunes, estoy muy emocionada! Ya ha pasado mucho tiempo que no voy a una conferencia de bloggers y que no veo a muchas de mis amigas blogueras. El año pasado hice un post de fotos de Hispanicize para que lo vean si no lo han visto.

Spring is Here + Easter Celebration!

It's amazing how kids are drawn into the outdoors. I got to hang out with them by myself this last Friday and Saturday. On friday they both had the day off so I hung out with them, I took them to an Easter egg hunt party at a park and it was very fun, immediately after we arrived they felt like fish in the water; they played in the sand, grabbed a ball and ran all over the place. I love to see them like that and it feels so new again because Spring just arrived, having warmer weather feels great, we get to enjoy the outdoors even more!

Es impresionante como los niños se sienten tan atraidos a los espacios abiertos, al aire libre. Este viernes pasado y ayer sábado me tocó estar con ellos. El viernes no tuvieron clases así que me los llevé a una fiesta de Pascua con búsqueda de huevitos en un parque que estuvo muy divertida, inmediatamente al llegar los niños estaban como peces en el agua, se fueron a jugar con la arena, jugaron con pelotas y corrieron por todos lados. A mi me encanta verlos así, me trae tanta felicidad y es que se siente como si fuera la primera vez porque la primavera ya llegó y el tener un clima más calientico se siente cheverísimo.

Yesterday I got to hang out with them again cause Derek was out making beer (did I tell you he brews beer?) and so we went to a park (Mission Bay, our favorite!) and flew a kite. Adrian had been asking to take him fly the kite day of the week so finally we had the time and made it. And again there they were having so much fun being outdoors, running, playing, it's amazing. Those moments are the best, watching them having fun with these simple things. I know that we will be doing a lot of outdoor activities these coming months, we are ready to take it all in!

Ayer sábado también me la pasé todo el día yo sola con ellos porque Derek estuvo haciendo cerveza (Ya les había comentado que el hace cerveza?) y entonces nos fuimos al parque (A Mission Bay que es nuestro favorito) y volamos un papagayo. Adri me había estado pidiendo que fuéramos a volar el papagayo desde que empezó la semana así que por fin fuimos. Y apenas llegamos ahí estaban los dos divirtiéndose como nunca en la grama, corriendo, jugando... Un maravilla. Esos son los mejore momentos, momentos en los que disfrutan con las cosas tan sencillas. Yo se que nos esperan muchos más días así con actividades al aire libre durante los meses que vienen, estamos listos para disfrutar esta primavera!

Marbleized Easter Eggs

I wanted to make the eggs different this year so I looked and looked and I tried out the marbleized egg dyeing technique, the results are quite pretty! It is not that hard but I would love to have tens of dozens of eggs to practice with and perfection the technique. I learned from my app I got last year from Martha Stewart, it was totally worth it! Remember? We did our Easter eggs with rubber bands last year.

Marbleized Easter Eggs

Here is the step-by-step:

Dye your eggs with food coloring first and let them dry.
Mix 2 to 3 cups of warm water, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 15 to 20 drops of food coloring in a shallow bowl (let the liquids be at least 3/4 of an inch high). Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and mix with a fork to create the swirls.
Place the egg in the oil mixture and roll it around (not too much!) until you see the marble effect on it.
Take it out, blot it with a paper towel and let it dry.

TIPS: I think the oil works best if it's olive oil cause it's thick, I didn't have olive oil and made them with vegetable oil which I think was harder, so keep that in mind! Also, combining darker colors on top of light one creates a better effect.

Maya and Adrian had fun of course dyeing there eggs, my sister was here visiting so she participated too. She and I were the ones marbleizing the eggs and Adrian did a couple of the marble effects as well. Dyeing eggs is always so much fun, we didn't grow up with this tradition, we only did it once and I remember it been super fun but in Venezuela people don't really do this. We even have pictures from that one time, maybe one day I'll bring them here! Have a Happy Easter!

Este año quería hacer los huevitos diferentes así que busqué y busqué y decidí intentar esta técnica de marmolizado, me gusta como quedaron! No es muy dificil y no se requiere de muchos ingredientes pero si de práctica, me gustaría tener miles de docenas de huevos para practicar! Yo aprendí con la aplicación de Martha Stewart que compré el año pasado, vale la pena! Se acuerdan? Que pintamos los huevitos con ligas?

Huevos de Pascua Marmolados

Aquí está el paso a paso:

Tiñe los huevitos con colorante de comida y déjalos secar.
Mezcla 2 a 3 tazas de agua, 1 cucharada de vinagre y 15-20 goticas de colorante de comida en un plato no tan ondo (que el líquido sea como de unos 2 cms de alto en total). Añade una cucharada de aceite de oliva y mezcla con un tenedor creando los espirales de aceite en el agua.
Mete el huevito en la mezcla de aceite y ruédalo un poquito por todos los lados (no mucho!) hasta que le veas el efecto marmolado.
Sácalo inmediatamente y dale toquesitos leves con un papel toallín y déjalo secar por completo.

TIPS: Yo creo que funciona mejor con el aceite de oliva poque es un aceite grueso, yo no tenía aceite de oliva y tuve que usar aceite vegetal que es mas delgadito y creo que las ondas no me salieron tan fuertes por eso. También, si combinan colores oscuros fuertes con colores claritos les quedará mejor el contraste porque a veces si son de los mismos tonos el color de abajo con el de arriba, no se nota casi.

Maya y Adrian se divirtieron metiendo huevitos en los baños de colores normales. Mi hermana, que estaba de visita cuando lo hicimos, también participó y ella y yo nos encargamos más que todo del baño marmolado aunque Adri hizo unos 2 baños marmolados y le gustó también. Pintar huevitos es siempre divertido, nosotros no crecimos con esta costumbre, sólo lo hicimos una vez que me acuerdo que fué super divertido y ahsta tenemos unas fotos, algún día las traigo! Que pasen Feliz Pascua!

Easter Mini Cakes - Wordless Wednesday

I decorated these Easter Mini Cakes for Spoonful, the cakes are made from a confetti cake mix, they are super easy to do, I did it with cookie cutters and discovered the cute pearls which were my favorite to use for decorating. Check out the full tutorial at Spoonful!

Wonderforge Spring Games {Giveaway}

I am huge fan of board games, although it's been a long time since we don't play board games at home... At least adult ones! But now that Adrian is so big and he can follow directions of many more board games, it's really fun to involve him. We tried out 2 new games that Wonderforge has for Spring:

Ninja Turtles Clash Alley

I was impressed at how Adrian learned how to play so quickly, he has amazed me on his reading skills so he can now read the instructions by himself and follow them, as you know he is a fan of Ninja Turtles so this game was fascinating to him and to Derek! They kept playing for a while, they were very into it, they said it was fun because it has 3D elements and that you have to run, climb and jump through the board as well as defeat the bad guys. I guess it's different from any other board game.

I loved to watch how Adrian concentrated playing by himself for a long time, and he was adding cards, it looked like his math skills were put to test!

He even played with Maya sometimes, check out the video below were he is "showing" her how to play!

Easter Matching Game

This is the regular matching game that we all know but all Disney characters are dressed up for Easter, it is perfect for preschoolers like little Maya. She is starting to grasp the idea, I played with her a couple of times and then since she loves the character cards she started matching them in her own way and of course organizing like we all know she loves!

These games could be a great addition to kid's Easter baskets!

A mi me fascinan los juegos de mesa, aunque tengo años que no juego mucho aquí en la casa. Pero por lo visto eso va a cambiar porque ahora que Adri está más grande y puede seguir instrucciones y jugar juegos de mesa mejor entonces es chévere involuclarlo más. Probamos estos 2 juegos nuevos para la primavera de Woderforge:

Ninja Turtles Clash Alley

Me impresionó cómo Adrian aprendió cuper rápido a jugar este juego, su lectura está ya tan buena que puede leer el solito las instrucciones y seguir el juego, además como es fanático de las tortugas Ninja estaba fascinado con el juego y porsupuesto Derek también. Jugaron los dos por un buen tiempo y varios días. Dijeron que el juego es muy chévere porque tiene elementos en 3D, que tienen que correr, escalar y brincar alrededor del tablero y tratar de agarrar a los malos. Al parecer es bastante diferente a otros juegos de mesa.

Por mi lado, me encantó ver a Adrian como se concentraba jugando el solito por mucho tiempo con el juego y además sumando sus puntos en las tarjetas, se ve que lo pone a praticar las matemáticas!

Hasta le quiso enseñar a Mayita, vean el video (arriba) un poquito de cuando estaban jugando.

Easter Matching Game

Este juego es como un juego de memoria pero los personajes de Disney aparecen todos listos para la Pascua, es perfectop para niños en edad preescolar como Mayita. Ella está aprendiendo más o menos la idea del juego, todavía hay que enseñarle bastante pero ahí va, yo jugé con ella unas cuantas veces y estaba fascinada con las princesas, la Minnie y todo. Luego ella lo agarró y jugó solita buscando las parejas y ordenando las tarjeticas como siempre que es lo que le gusta!

Estos juegos están chéveres para las cestas de Pascua que acostumbran a dar a los niños!

DIY Easter Egg Placemats and Activity

I've been busy preparing fun things for Easter. It's looking like this week I will be posting a lot of Easter for you!

Personalized Easter Egg Placemats
Today I want to share these Easter Placemats I created with Washi tape for Latinamom.me and of course for the kids! They loved them! I made a step-by-step instructions, you can go to LatinaMom.me to check it out.

Filling Easter Eggs Activity
After I set the table for the photos they sat down and enjoyed filling the plastic eggs themselves. We've never done it so they fill the eggs so I thought what a great activity this is...

Just set up little containers with jelly beans, marshmallows, chocolates and whatever else you want to add and let them fill the eggs. They spent at least half an hour opening, filling and closing, interchanging the eggs they wanted to use and all that. Of course these wont be the same eggs we'll use for the main Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday but meanwhile they have fun playing with them around the house!

Individuales de Pascua personalizados en forma de Huevitos

Hoy les quiero compartir estos individuales en forma de huevito que hice con teipe tipo washi, los hice para Latinamom.me y porsupuesto pensando en los niños que les encantaron! Para ver las instrucciones paso a paso pueden ir allá a LatinaMom.me.

Actividad de rellenar los Huevitos de Pascua

Después de que puse la mesa así para las fotos dejé que los niños jugaran y empezaron a rellenar los huevitos de plástico ellos mismos. Nunca lo han hecho ellos y entonces pensé que chévere esta actividad...

Sólo pon platicos con diferentes dulces como jelly beans, malvaviscos, chocolates o cualquier otro que se les antoje y deja que los niños rellenen sus huevitos como quieran. Ellos se la pasaron como mas de media hora entretenidos, abriendo y cerrando sus huevitos, intercambiando de colores y demás. Porsupuesto estos no son los mismos que usaremos para la búsqueda de huevitos el domingo de Pascua pero de aquí allá se divierten con estos jugando en la casa ellos mismos!

National Comedy Theater in San Diego

It's rare these days when Derek and me take a little date night, we are so busy and doing so much that it's hard, but as soon as we find some opportunity we jump right in!

So my sister was visiting this past weekend and she babysat the kids while we went to the theater to see a comedy show, and we had such a great time, it was an improv show they have at The National Comedy Theater here in San Diego.

It was the first time I went to that area of town where the theater is located, it's called Mission Hills and it has several restaurants and cafés in the same street, I need to go back and take pictures for a Cool Places in San Diego post! I was even yelling at Derek why he didn't take me there before, cause he said he used to go when he was younger a lot.

Anyways, if you haven't see an improv show before, you're missing out! It's hard to explain but what they do at National Comedy Theater is that they divide 6 actors into 2 teams (3 each) and play games against each other, -acting games-. There is a referee and the audience participates giving them ideas of scenarios, words to start with and so on. One of my favorite games were Sing it, where they start acting and all of sudden the other team calls Sign it and they have to keep acting with a song, it's amazing what they do, and really funny! These 2 guys kept signing about yoga and doing yoga poses together, it was hilarious.

Another game I liked was "I can do better", 2 actors start improvising and the others can come in a replace one of them yelling: I can do better! How? (they ask him) By acting better as a girl for example, and they come in and actually make it better!

We will for sure go back for more dates cause it's affordable and it will always be a different show since it's improvised, plus there are great restaurants to explore too!

Derek y yo tenemos ultimamente no salimos tan a menudo, hemos estado bien ocupados con trabajo pero cuando se nos da una oportunidad, la aprovechamos! Mi hermana vino este fin de semana que pasó de visita y cuidó a los niños una noche mientras que nosotros fuimos al teatro a ver una comedia, la pasamos tan chévere, nos reímos mucho, fuimos a ver el show de improvisación del grupo que se llama National Comedy Theater aquí en San Diego.

Es la primera vez que voy a esa urbanización aquí en San Diego y me encantó! Se llama Mission Hills y hay muchos restaurancitos, bares y cafés en la misma calle, tengo que regresar otro día y tomar fotos para hacerles un post de Lugares chéveres de San Diego. Hasta estaba regañando a Derek de porqué no me había llevado antes porque me dijo que el iba a ahí muy a menudo hace años con sus amigos.

En fín, si nunca han visto un show de improvisación, no saben de lo que se pierden, es dificil de explicar pero lo que hacen en este National Comedy Theater (Teatro de Comedia Nacional) es que dividen a 6 actores en 2 grupos de 3 y juegan juegos entre ellos, juegos de actuación. Hay hasta un referí y el público participa dándoles ideas de lugares donde supuestamente están o cualquier otra idea para empezar una actuación. Uno de mis preferidos fué uno que se llama "Cántalo" (Sing it), donde los actores están actuando normalmente y el otro equipo les dice de repente que canten en ese momento, es muy cómico, y hacen cosas increíbles. Habían dos actores que cantaron acerca de Yoga haciendo poses al mismo tiempo, fué demasiado bueno!

Otro juego que me encantó se llamaba "Yo lo puedo hacer mejor", mientras que dos actores estaban improvisando los demás podían interrumpir cuando quisieran y decir "Yo lo puedo hacer mejor!" Cómo? (le preguntan) Actuando mejor de una mujer (por ejemplo) y se intercambian de lugar y de hecho les sale mucho mejor y muy cómico!

De seguro volveremos porque cada vez que hacen el show es distinto ya que es improvisado y super accesible, además hay bastante restaurancitos que explorar!

Mango and Berry Smoothies

I made these these mango and berry swirly smoothies for Spoonful, they are super super easy and cool looking, a good alternative to serving regular boxed juice or sodas at kids parties! Hice estos batidos (o Smoothies) de mango y frutas rojas (fresas, frambuesas, moras, etc), son super fáciles y se ven bellos, una buena alternativa para una fiesta en vez de refrescos o jugos de caja, que les parece? Ah y estoy usando mucho las bandejas de fiesta que hice Pueden ir ver la receta de los smoothies ne Spoonful y las bandejas también! Feliz Jueves!
