It’s 9:30 A.M. on a Friday in Cambridge, England, and ARM CEO Warren East looks annoyed. Bloomberg has just reported that UBS has downgraded his company’s stock to a sell. The news is plausible, since ARM (which used to stand for Advanced RISC Machine) depends on the troubled cellphone market. But it turns out that Bloomberg simply got the wrong ARM. “They confused us with a South African mining company” — African Rainbow Materials — East explains.

This sort of thing happens all the time to ARM (ARMH), a microchip designer with $546 million in revenue last year. Nestled in this leafy college town an hour from London — and 5,000 miles from Silicon Valley — it’s easy to overlook. But ARM may be the most important technology company no one has heard of. Its low-power chip designs serve as the brains of 98% of the world’s cellphones. And the company’s technology can be found in myriad other gadgets and devices, including digital TVs, iPods, videogames, video recorders, and even Pleo robotic dinosaurs.

ARM draws basic blueprints; essentially the company designs the core of the chip. Chipmakers such as Qualcomm (QCOM), Texas Instruments (TXN), Samsung, and many others license those designs and then customize them, sending ARM a small royalty — usually a few cents — for every gadget that rolls off the assembly line. “I don’t think they’ve ever lost sight of who their customers are, what their business is,” says Michael Rayfield, general manager of the mobile business at Nvidia, the graphics-chip maker. “ARM has done a nice job of maintaining leadership in the ultra-low-power [chip design] that is necessary for cellphones.”

As cellphone sales, which represent more than half of ARM’s revenues, have plateaued in recent years, the company’s financial growth has slowed. Revenue grew 78% from 2004 to 2006, for example, but only 6% last year. Profits, at $120 million in 2008, have followed a similar trajectory. (ARM’s profit margins, 21%, are slightly higher than those of its peers.) The flattening growth helps explain why ARM’s shares are trading at only half of what they were two years ago.

But ARM is at the center of a crucial technological shift. The lines between phones and computers are blurring as devices like iPhones and BlackBerrys, which use ARM designs, offer everything from e-mail and web surfing to movies and spreadsheets. These days the most popular services — Facebook, YouTube, iTunes , Google — no longer require being tethered to a PC. With traditional computers beginning to lose their primacy, competition in chips for smartphones and other non-PC devices is intensifying.

For ARM it means facing off against a ferocious new competitor: Intel (INTC). The chip titan has declared its ambition to conquer cellphones and other gadgets the way it did personal computers, and steamroll ARM in the process. For its part, ARM is trying to expand by entering a nascent market in which Intel already has an advantage: netbooks, the mini-computers designed mostly for e-mail and web browsing. East thinks his corporate David can prevail over the chip Goliath. As he puts it, “ARM is 1,750 people, but we punch way above our weight.”

An organist in his local church, East, 47, is mild-mannered but capable of the occasional brash proclamation. He acknowledges that Intel is a brilliant competitor and a matchless manufacturer. But, as he puts it, “Intel’s got an old-fashioned business model. ARM’s got a 21st-century business model.”

After two hours here is what I made ~ A poor dinasaur with hardly any skin, bleeding, no teeth, burnt by a fierce sun of rampant energy. He is dying and he knows it.

BUT oh the image handling is superb but what excites me most is the 3D. I am in the process of resurrecting my Silicon Graphics 64-Bit Workstation ~ HA! again, I bought siggi 12 years ago ~ Windows has finally caught up!

This is ptofessional stuff come to the PC and the learning curve while steepish isn't too bad if you have a good pair of hiking boots, a native guide and a path well travelled.

Mike Figgis shot the movie Time Code over a period of two weeks but not as re-takes, but rather making the whole same movie again and again. View in 4 screens The final credits say:

What Figgis demonstrates is that a theatrical film can be made with inexpensive, lightweight digital cameras and that the picture quality is easily strong enough to transfer to 35mm. He also experiments with the notion of filming in real time, which has long fascinated directors. Alfred Hitchcock orchestrated “Rope” (1948) so that it appeared to be all one shot, and Jean-Luc Godard famously said that the truth came at 24 frames per second, and every cut was a lie.”

I found the movie an intellectual joy, my eye sweeping around the four cameras while letting the rising and falling of the sound direct my focus to one of them. With a little practise I was able to concentrate on all four screens at the same time, ‘out of the corner(s) of my eye’ . A non-focus, wide-eyed zen meditation technique.

Cinematic technique aside, the overall story itself is about the making of a movie at Red Mullet Studios, (Figgis’ own) in downtown L.A. It has five main characters:

1. The sensitive, “real” wife of the studio owner, torn in love, in therapy
2. The rich bitch lesbian in her stretch limo with her wire-tap
3. Her girlfriend wannabe actress
4. The Studio Owner, genius, drunk and screwing the wannabe actress
5. The Movie itself has its own life, its own character, its own screen-in-a-screen

The rest of the cast are awesome. Of note: Drug pushing security guy; beautiful auditioning actress; “Q” the mobile massage guy; pretentious Leiberwitz-quoting Russian-loving female existential singer avante garde wannabe movie director; the director casting a movie and the staff of Red Mullet.

The Story: A Love Story

Cinema semiologists speak of the “disjoined signifier,” and by that they refer to the separation of the viewer from the signified–in this case, from the story.

Love the soundtrack: Jazz, the movie is cinematic Jazz, punctuated with The Polish Symphony Orchestra and featuring Everything But The Girl

The Celtic Tiger ~ 12 years ago we owned CelticTiger.com. This was our site. [sorry I was really into Japanese at the time - can't remember what it had to do with Ireland, lol] It is now owned by Heartland Solutions, Inc. a Florida company making electrical transformers.

The Cyber Café ~ We started our own association, country wide, IICA > Irish Internet Café Association. We would have monthly meetings, hosted by a different café each month. We would make rules about pornography and such things. There were 19 of us. (Not a bad site for 1998.)

Y2K ~ [WARNING : THIS SITE CRASHES FIREFOX 3.5] Remember the scare 10 years ago? Every computer in the whole wide world was going to die in the first minute of 2000. Ha! We were ready!

Pubs ~ Fancy a pint? Pubs were beginning to get on line. Have a look > chintzy wallpaper and reflecting leprechauns but it did use a database.

Seems like a very good improvement. It certainly is fast.

I added febe, a back up manager, firebug for web development (html 5 development plus editing tools plus web site speed plus CSS verification…..) and colorzilla which allows for colour picking on site.

That will keep me going.

Firefox has always been my default browser but I also used Chrome because it was much faster ~ I will give them a speed test.

Released only a few hours ago it is approacing 1 Million downloads (Watch in Real Time Here)

The New iPhone from Apple

iPhone review

On Friday I bought a new phone, first in 5 years. I had heard about the iPhone but thought “not for me” then a new one arrived 3G (s). I read about it and it looked good. I needed a new phone so I put my name down. Two weeks ago. Got a call on Wednesday saying it would be in on Friday. 26th June

Got it about 5.30pm. Back to the shop ’cause I didn’t know how to put the sim in…back again cause I couldn’t register it. I am really stupid, no really, it was so easy…..needs to be plugged into PC. The interface is superb, synchronisation uploading & downloading are very fast.

So I am up and running. Added my contacts and texted everyone with my new number cool interface, very smart and intuitive – a smart phone. So I started to explore. Safari compass, gave me my exact position and then gave me step by step details on how to walk to St Stephen’s Green from 11 Church St Tullamore, 94.1 km, 19 hours and 2 minutes….

Went to my websites, explored them, book marked them and linked them to my iPhone home page, did this with more sites. Sent some emails. Ok Internet works. Registered with iTunes store.

Took some pics, texted them, emailed them, then did the same with video – so easy. Set up call divert from my old phone, set up voice mail on my new phone, made a voice file or two.

Next day installed http://cooliris.com get it for your PC as well; installed sky news and Google -Google Earth too. I needed a document handler so bought this app for €4.95. (email as attachment). I then spent a couple of hour’s just playing – best toy going! (I think it is important to enjoy yourself while being serious)

Enjoyed picture taking without a flash and made a few videos again excellent quality. I set up an Apple id. I logged into YouTube. Joined Wimbledon and imeem. Made a serious video about the phone, took me four tries to get it reasonably ok -will put it up on youtube tomorrow. Went down the pub and started typing this ~ wide screen, two thumbs.

Problems: Battery life seems very poor, ran out of memory, haven’t found support for Adobe (must have it). Then disaster: battery warning, I left it for a bit then plugged it in. Left it for 2 hours, tried it: nothing. Went online no help could be found. 3 hours: nothing. Went to bed. Woke up & tried it and nothing. Very disappointed. Took it back to the shop, ok come back in an hour. Ok. Went back “sorry too busy, come back tomorrow? or here is the apple support number….”

Went home, a bit sad as I thought I had found a great piece of serious hardware.

Phoned Apple support: “Ok, hold both buttons down at the same time” And it all came back to life! Battery? “Just flick the switch on the side to turn off 3G and the battery will last 3 times as long, have a nice day”

Cool. Time to post my video to YouTube. Tried 3 times but couldn’t get it to work -don’t know why…..yet. Given my experience it is probably me . The video is a .mov file so it is huge. I will convert it and reduce the size by about 70% (flash or windows)

So, new kid on the block, good looking, rich, street smart, sexy, really intelligent, fits in with the cool guys but your parents will love him.

O2 Neil Young and Father's Day

I am awed, once more.

It was my birthday on March 26th and it was one of the big ones. A decade milestone. My daughter Sekani bought me a ticket to see Niel Young at The Point sometime in June. I thought how cool she is and thought no more about it really.

Time passed and I was very pleased with myself. The websites were looking really good and I had mastered Flash and video. I had become a web hosting company.

I got a text message from Majella, my ex, saying Niel Young was on Sunday. Oh. Well I didn’t think I’d go, make up some excuse. I had seen Niel Young in 2001 ~ it was Ok but I couldn’t see much, it was a hassle getting to Dublin and even more of a hassle getting home afterwards. I would make some excuse.

Sekani came round the next day. “You going to see Niel Young on Sunday, Dad?” “Sure darling”, I shouldn’t be so lazy!!! I guess I could do it…….

Sunday came. It was 10.30 am. Mick, who was staying with me, asked if I was going to the concert. Shit! Yes. Went on to Kearns Buses website, there was a bus but I phoned them to make sure.It was at 2.30pm. It was 11.30am now. So I had a shower and got changed. Found a nice sweater made by….. The Point! Seemed like an omen. Went to the shop and got a salad. Had €70 so Ok.

Dermot came round to pick up his laptop that I had upgraded. Mick and Dermot talked about the Kilkenny v. Galway hurling match played in Tullamore, yesterday. The both said I would be too hot on a sweaty bus (no a/c on Irish buses) and I should dress down. Nah. Dermot left, it was 1.30pm. Mick told me to play some Niel Young but I couldn’t really find anything, they were all a bit played out. But I put on “Hey, hey, my,my” rock and roll will never die.

2.10 ~ left home, went to the bank and got out an extra €40. Waited for the bus. Hey! saw a poster in a shop window. It was Father’s Day! Cool.The bus came and I paid my €13 return. Found a seat. Directed the a/c stream to my face. Reclined the seat and fell asleep.

4.15 ~ we were in Dublin. Turned off the a/c as I was a bit chilly. Pulled up at O’Connell Bridge and before getting off double checked with the driver about the 10.25pm bus back from ???? Brewer St. Girl gave me their pamphlet. The bus driver said “You don’t know where that is, do you?” I told him I would get a cab.

Had a fag and soaked up the vibe, watching the traffic and the people. It was sunny and warm and summer. Feeling good, looking good. Needed a pee so turned round and there was a pub, a big one. Re-leaved my self and ordered a pint of Guinness. Watched the screen behind the bar and spotted a widget I could use. The pint came and I went and sat down near a big screen and watched some highlights of the Kilkenny match.

Fancied a smoke so found the smoking area. Usually I am a bit shy, but that was the old me! I was confident, self assured, OK kind of a guy now. Cool I was! I sat down next to a lady and commented how the view of an alley was a bit depressing. We chatted. She was from Coventry, on holiday and off to visit some relatives in Westmeath tomorrow. She finished her cigarette, wished me a nice day.

I had a sip of beer, rolled another fag.

“is this chair free?” He was about thirty with a foreign accent. He was a kiwi and I commented how I had just watched Lord of the Rings and how beautiful New Zealand was. He said Ireland was beautiful and rainy just like NZ. He was single and a welder, working on a gas pipeline. We chatted, potted life stories. One of his basic philosophy’s in life: Help the youngsters starting out, 3 out of 5 make it. “Well we are all in this life together…..”

I finished my pint and walked out into the sunshine. Looking around, smiling, enjoying the afternoon. Went and sat on a memorial watching the comings and goings of O’Connell bridge. Got a family guy to take a photo. (Beware Des Bishop’s knackers and Dubs). Took a few pics, the street, the Liffey, humming the Foggy Dew. Went for a stroll, took more pics ~ The Post Office with it’s bullet holes. I found myself next to a statue of James Joyce and got a streetcleaner to take a pic. I sent it to Mick.

6.10pm ~ found a taxi. “The Point please” Chatted about the economy 425,000 unemployed. Depressing. So he asked me who I was going to see? He said great! And did I know his birthday was the same as Niel Young’s?

6.25pm doors open in ten minutes. So, no longer the Point eh? It was The O2. It was June 21st 2009, Father’s day. With Neil Young. We were let in and I looked around. Got myself a pint. Hmmm.. could see the stage a bit and the underside of stairs. Hmmm. Checked out there was a smoking area. Finished my pint and walked up the stairs to the arena seats. WOW! WOW! WOW!

Welcome to the 21st Century.

Calmed down a little bit and went for a fag. Guy came over and sat down next to me and in a thick Belfast accent said “take a swig o this” passing me a half bottle of whiskey. I took a good swig and let out a yell! We introduced our selves, “Colin” and a fan. Ha, we were at the 2001 concert together. “Fancy a smoke?” Colin asked. I declined. Then after a few minutes, wtf, gimme some. So comfortably high now. “Keep on rockin in the free world Colin”

8.15pm ~ I had found my seat. Block L 55 155. Right at the back, right in the middle. Perfect. Centre : The Stage, lhs : big video screen for close ups, rhs: the same.

8.35pm, the lights go out, 12,000 people start cheering. Single spotlight on the mike, close up video screens flicker on, there he is : Niel Young 1945 ~ Now. Looking a bit old perhaps but… He says “Hi…Welcome…Thanks for coming” We all roar back. The middle aged civil servant next to me cheers. Niel starts to sing….hey hey….my, my…rock and roll will never die. I wipe away the emotion flowing down my cheeks. I sing along.(Oh The Sound Quality ~ Dolby Best!) He finishes and the crowd erupts. He plays Cinnamon Girl. Full on Rock guitar. I rock, I play air guitar, I know the riffs. He climaxes five times with the drummer. The crowd goes wild.

He goes to the mike and says he is having a good time. He turns on the front spot lights and illuminates US! All of us, full house us. 12,000 of us. We scream Yeah! House lights off. he puts on his harmonica and walks over to the piano. He plays……he sings….he plays the harmonica as only he can. He has totally got us. In fact there is no ‘us’ it’s ‘We’. He plays some more songs, he plays the organ, the electric slide hawaiian guitar is featured. He stops and goes to the mike…

“I’ve got a friend in the audience. This is for you. Happy Father’s Day” and he plays My Favourite Song ~ Harvest Moon. I cry and sing. It can’t get any better. Lord let me die now…..

9.45pm I checked the time. I would have to go soon. It’s ok, boy have I had a good time. One more song, then the bus.

Down By The River. I shot my baby….dead……ooohhhh…shot her dead….

But it was new! It was old! It was classic. It was Neil Young. At the chorus it was we singing, sometimes you could barely hear Neil. ………

10.05pm Gotta go. Moved out into the still-light night and hailed a cab.. “??????? Brewer St please.” I’ve got to get my bus home. He asked if I was sure busses go from there? I handed him the leaflet the girl had given me. He pulled over to put on his glasses. Oh Ok, it must be a private bus. I gave him a €3 tip he wished me a happy life.

10.22pm I remembered the street from seeing Avril Lavigne at the old Point with Sekani. I was in the right place. Cathal Brugha St

10.30pm Got on the bus with two others. Re lived the concert as we motored through the total darkness of the countryside.

11.47pm Arrived back in Tullamore. I thanked the driver for the excellent service. I was the only one getting off.

Midnight. Put on the kettle for a cup of coffee. Had a fag. A tear or two rolled down my cheek. Sorry, getting old I guess. I am 60. I am only just starting to peak

My alter ego and Internet Freak, par excellance, now styles himself as “The Widget King” and maybe he is!?

We start off with the Twitter Widget that everyone knows and loves so I won’t bore you with it. But things start to get interesting with http://pjfbncyl.com/news.html . Can’t go anywhere without Music? Well this is the widget for you. Radio Widget is a search engine for Artists / Composers ~ from Akon to Beethoven. You can also search for a musical instrument (try harpsichord and see what you get.) Appearance is important and you may have eschewed Wallpapers on your PC as tacky. Not so now with the Wallpaper Widget! Some people have given Wikipedia a bad name. Personally I think it is a great resource. Google thinks so, techcrunch (mashlogic plugin) thinks so. Music be the food of love....I have discussed this in my music page. The reason I mention it here

If you need help you could email me with a specific question ~ I’ll do my best to answer promptly. You could join the forum by registering or logging in to the Forum and start a topic. Someone or me will be monitoring it. The Forum is really a great way of getting things moving ~ take your time registering, there is no rush. If you get it right the first time you won’t have to do it again right? Remember you are here to have fun as well. It is OK to make mistakes. From my experience everyone on the Internet is kind, friendly and willing to share. If you are not able to share much at the moment ~ don’t worry…YOU will become a resource too! Sure there are scams, spams and pushy marketers, you are not stupid and never part with your hard-earned cash immediately, think about it, book mark it ~ if its any good it will be there tomorrow despite : Act Now! Limited Offer! Only You! Expires in 24 hours! Crap! LOL.

There are 30 day free trials too. Early on I downloaded everything, the try-before-you-buy scheme is great. But for God’s sake don’t install anything that asks for global dominance of stuff like associating all your .jpg files with the program. Unless its from someone like Microsoft or Google. Always trust Google and you won’t go wrong. What is more all Google stuff is generally free. Picasa is a great example, it will index all the images stored on your computer. Yes all of them, even the one you took of your dog five years ago that you had totally forgotten about. Google Earth is another great example. BTW if you don’t like a program or its too expensive then uninstall it. If the program is any good it will uninstall easily. I tend to dislike money back guarantees that ask for your credit card details and promise a refund (tho I use it myself) but if you don’t like it take them up on it. If you ask and they don’t then report them! You have rights!

PC Maintenance. MUST be done. You are probably running Windows so once a week get rid of all those Temp files for example. DeFrag regularly. A lot of these tasks can be automated. Please please back up regularly, set a restore point regularly. Don’t trust your computer (sorry ~ had to be said), trust yourself. Your computer has a memory, don’t trust it, it may be showing you old stuff that is no longer real, no longer up-to-date. Close down your computer and start fresh. If any program, browser, plug in wants to update itself then just do it. Always have the latest version, trust Adobe for example. Pay for a good anti-virus program like Norton, don’t scrimp on essential stuff ~ you will regret it. P.S. If you are doing anything : save every 5 mins, save before you have a cup of coffee, Save before you fuck up not after.

Finally, what you are reading is free. This template was free. Searching for stuff is free. The Forum software was free. Twitter is free. This domain costs me $28 per month. My Internet connection costs me €40 a month. I only have a basic Laptop. I have experience, I have time. Its yours. What’s special?

Became a DJ this week on blip.fm and have a feed on my web site for special stuff I play. What a fantastic resource it is. I now have music everywhere I surf. OMG it is music eclectic gone mad. I haven’t failed to find a song yet. I have my own playlist and I play requests for people or I just play songs for people for the craic. I was a DJ in my twenties in Torremolinos and I rocked Harry’s Bar. Now its the world aka The Internet, which has become my real home. I live online now. Totally . Blip.fm encapsulates The Internet. Not only does it deliver, it interacts. This is new generation for me – the two-way process. Passivity is really gone the way of all flesh. I fell in love with The Internet when it first came out. It was my socialist dream come true. Everything was free! Guess what? It still is. The Internet sings to me now and I sing a long, occasionally I solo. In perfect 3 part harmony.

Who am I? Nobody special and that is the point, and the message. When I first joined blip.fm I was impressed but, me be a DJ? nah. So I left, for a whole month. Then a friend in Las Vegas played me a song @Enoxh, telling me succinctly to get off my arse and join the party. 3 days of practice and I am a party animal. OK. Over the top? Think of your most favourite song in the WholeWideWorld. Tell me and I will play it for you. I am serious. Go to http://blip.fm/pjfbncyl and ask.

Sometimes I only remember a fragment, a line, a phrase. Can’t remember the band or the title, only a fragment. So I type the fragment into blip.fm’s search engine. Hey presto found it. I preview it until I have found the original recording or an enhanced version (Stereo / Resampled) or a cover version, or a re-mix. More often than not I stick with the original. I just choose the best qualty. After I have listened to it, I blip it! Sharing with the world with a relevant message. It automatically updates my music on my website where I keep 20 of my songs. If I am listening to the public channel and hear one of my favourite songs I re-blip it. Currently =I will try to fix you Coldplay.

oh BTW and FYI I have fun. Logged in as “eazi listnin Dave ~ stuck in a lift? here we go…” and played Prodigy Breathe. Logged in as “traditional , conservative, old-fashioned values kind a guy” and played I’m on a boat (ft TPain) the hottest song on YouTube 2009 20 million hits. Meditation is the art of silencing the mind. When the mind is silent, concentration is increased and we experience inner peace in the midst of worldly turmoil. This elusive inner peace is what attracts so many people to meditation and is a quality everyone can benefit from.

What are the Benefits of Meditation?

I’ve been meditating twice a day for the past 9 years because I enjoy it. It may seem strange, but I feel happiest when sitting in perfect silence. The experience is difficult to express in words. It is akin to the “peace that passeth understanding”. It is also true that every meditation is not the same. Sometimes meditation is a struggle to control the mind, while at other times it feels effortless.

These are some of the benefits of meditation:

Improved concentration - A clear mind makes you more productive, especially in creative disciplines like writing.
Less bothered by little things - Do you sometimes allow yourself to get upset by little things? It is the nature of the mind to magnify small things into serious problems. Meditation helps us detach. We learn to live in the here and now, rather than worrying about the past or future. We do not worry about meaningless things, but see the bigger picture.
Better Health - There have been numerous studies pointing to the health benefits of meditation. The reason is that meditation reduces stress levels and alleviates anxiety. If we can reduce stress, many health benefits follow.
Knowledge of Self - Meditation enables us to have a deeper understanding of our inner self. Through meditation we can gain a better understanding of our life’s purpose.

Is Meditation Religious?

The great thing about meditation is that our philosophy/religious belief is not importanct. Meditation is about consciousness. The beliefs of the mind become trivial. We dive deep into the heart of the matter to gain access to our soul - our inner reality. Therefore, mediation can (and is ) practiced by people of different religions or no religion.

But I don’t have time To Meditate

Many people like the idea of meditation, but feel they don’t have enough time. When you really want to do something you can find time. Get up earlier or watch 30 minutes less TV. Meditation requires an investment of time, but clearing the mind makes the the rest of the day more productive. Nothing is better than the feeling of inner peace. What is the point in being tremendously busy but unable to enjoy it? Meditation is not about retreating from the world; it gives us inspiration. Whatever you do, if you have peace of mind, your work will be more enjoyable and productive.

How To Meditate

Like anything worthwhile, meditation requires practice. To get the most from meditation you need to do it every day. This requires a place and time where you will not be disturbed. Check out this cool mindmap pdf for inspiration: [1] meditation.pdf

Sit with a straight back. Don’t try to meditate lying down because you are likely to fall asleep. Meditation brings relaxation and peace but at the same time this is a dynamic peace. Meditation is quite different than the relaxation of sleep. When we really meditate, we are fully alert and conscious. Our sense of awareness is heightened. Afterwards you’ll have a positive feeling for the world and a renewed sense of dynamism.
Don’t eat before meditating. After a heavy meal your body will be lethargic with digestion.
It is not necessary to mediate in the lotus posture. It is fine to meditate in a chair, as long as the back is straight.
It is helpful to take a shower before meditating.
Burning incense and having a candle are not necessary, but they can add a little extra inspiration.
It is good to meditate early in the morning. It is said the best time is 3am, although, I feel it is more important to be awake and not sleepy, I meditate at 6.30am.

One Pointed Concentration

However you learn to [2] meditate, you must learn to concentrate on one thing at a time. Usually, the mind tries to hold several different thoughts and ideas at once. When you sit down to meditate for the first time, you realize how cluttered the mind is. Mediation teachers have described the mind as a “mad monkey”. However, the mind can be tamed and forced to concentrate on a single thought.

One helpful technique is concentrating on a candle flame. Narrow your gaze to the small tip and block out all other thoughts. When you get distracted, go back to focusing on the candle flame. You can also use other objects like a small dot or flower. The important thing is that you concentrate only on one thing at a time.

Mantra

Another way to learn concentration is through the use of mantra. A mantra is the repetition of a sacred word. For example, you might repeat the mantra AUM a certain number of times. Repeating a mantra forces the mind to focus on a single thought.

Silent Mind

After you’ve practiced concentration and learned to focus on one thing at a time, you can proceed to the next stage: no thought at all. Achieving a silent mind is difficult, but when to attain it the experience is powerful. A technique I advise is viewing your thoughts as separate from your self. When a thought appears, make a conscious decision to throw it out of your mind. Over time you realize that you are capable of allowing or rejecting thoughts. Your real “I” is not a collection of thoughts, but something far deeper. This is the most significant realization of meditation - that you do not have to be a slave to your thoughts.

Through meditation, you attain the power to control your thoughts, and on occasion stop them completely. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t attain a silent mind straightaway. It takes time and practice. There is nothing really else to it; meditation is a simple and spontaneous action. Unfortunately, our mind is used to complication and it takes time to unlearn bad habits.

All while fitting in a busy work schedule, making sure the bills are paid and trying to keep some sort of social life. Before you think you are on the wrong website, don’t worry. This is The Positivity Blog. Today we’re going to look at some simple yet effective fundamentals you can implement into your world so that life starts working for you.

These simple truths can often be ignored, and you might just find that you’ve been shutting out the life of your dreams, rather than positively promoting it.

Making Life Work for You

The following steps are here for you to question yourself and your current path, but they’re also here to show how simple changes in your daily life can affect the overall picture.

1. Be Honest with Yourself and Others

Before you dismiss this as some ‘obvious advice’, let me explain. There’s one cold, hard truth I want to share with you today: if you are living the dreams of someone else, life is always going to be a struggle. What I mean by that is despite your religious views or upbringing, if you are on the path to achieve goals for others, then you will never find ease or fulfilment in your life.

Sometimes, parents and peers can push us into careers that they think are best for us or lifestyles that we simple don’t enjoy but we follow them because it is what they want from us. Your parents brought you into this world and your friends are there to support you, but there are certain things they don’t have control over - your career choices and ambitions. Ask yourself right now: “Am I really on the path I want to be on, or am I doing it for someone else?” Only you can know the answer, and only you can change the outcome.

If you realise you aren’t on the path you want to be on, build the courage to speak out about it. After all, this is your life, this is all we have. Make the most of it.

2. Work Smarter, Get Luckier

One of my favourite sayings goes something along the lines of “the harder I work, the luckier I get”. What this means is that more opportunities tend to arise when you start getting more done. There are other ways to get more done though, and that involves working smarter, rather than working harder.

Some good tips to work smarter include:

Realising areas where you are wasting time. This might be things like procrastinating or it might be spending too much time being social with friends instead of keeping focused on your to do list. Of course, getting out now and then isn’t a bad thing.
Getting up earlier. Not only does waking up in the earlier give you more time to work on the things you need to, but it’s also a very productive time of day. Mornings are often free of distractions that you are likely to get working at other hours.
Outsourcing what you can. For some people, outsourcing is seen as a waste of money when they could do something themselves. However, with some research about cost and results, you will find that it’s possible to outsource a lot of your work and still achieve great, if not better results.

These simple tips should work to give you more hours in the day so you can focus more on the likes of wealth creation, health and happiness. Ideally, your ‘work’ is towards your life dreams, so happiness is just part of the process.

3. Create Lasting Relationships

I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying “It’s not what you know but who you know”, well…it’s as relevant in 2009 as it ever was, especially in the current economy. Due to relationships I’ve created in the last year I’ve been able to:

Save money by getting free drinks and entry in almost all nightclubs that I visit.
Get a job half way across the world, doing what I love.
Save money on the likes of accommodation and car rentals.
Raise my overall ’social profile’ and become happier in the process.

I’ve wrote a guide on ‘How to Make Friends‘ but I’ll summarise the main points here. Realise that friends are abundant, there are literally billions of people out there you can connect with; therefore, don’t change for anyone. People want to see the real you, they don’t want you to change. Authenticity and honesty go a long way, at least to the people that will matter.

4. Open your Mind to the Possibilities

I did say that it’s possible you may be shutting out your dreams in your life and you may not even realise it. If you didn’t need money and could do anything in the world, what would it be? If you aren’t on the path to doing that, you’re in the wrong park.

Seriously, whatever you can visualise you can create. Our world contains college drop-outs who have started billion dollar companies, 3ft tall, 26 year old men dating multiple beautiful women, humans landing on the moon and NASA sending robots to Mars.

There are plenty of people out there who will be happy to tell you that you can’t achieve things, you don’t need to tell yourself as well.

Stick to your honest path, realise it is possible, create great relationships along the way and work smarter in the process. And you know what? Life will start to work for you, always.

THE PROBLEM

We all want to change but it seems the most difficult thing in the world. Why is that? Let me tell you of some research:

A psychologist wanted to carry out some tests on affecting peoples perception. He gave one group of volunteers a hot cup of coffee to hold in their hands and gave another group a cold cup of coffee to hold. He then asked the volunteers to rate a photograph of someone - did they think he was kind, warm, friendly etc. The volunteers that had been holding the hot cup of coffee gave SIGNIFICANTLY higher marks than those who had been holding the cold cup.

How did this happen? The volunteers did not even drink the coffee yet felt more positive towards the photograph! There's more....

A colleague noticed that when her clients left a therapy session, they were smiling. Initially she thought it was the effectiveness of the session but then she noticed that her eight year old son had drawn a small smiley face near the door handle.............

What was happening in these two cases (and there are thousands of examples!)? We are all affected by unconscious triggers that we are not consciously aware of!

Habits rule our lives, they are what make us say 'thank you' automatically when we are given something. It is working at the unconscious level that often determines our behaviour. These habits or unconscious processes are reinforced throughout our lives. Advertising is a prime example. Think of a chocolate ad, how it is filled with beautiful images, creaminess, pleasant music, attractive women in a state of bliss, maybe something forbidden or slightly naughty - all these building unconscious desires to get you to buy the brand - positive associations with eating chocolate. AND THEY WORK!

Poor You! You are a victim of unconscious desires that you have no control over. That's why so many regimes and diet fads simply do not work because they are not getting at the root of the problem.

But don't worry - you have already taken the first step in changing the way you behave. Just being aware of the above HAS CHANGED YOUR LIFE!

THE SOLUTION

Unconscious desires are notoriously hard to get rid of by just working at the conscious level. I could give you a list of things to say in your mind when confronted with a bad eating habit but this would only be superficial. I could beat you with a stick every time you opened the fridge (aversion therapy) and this could stop you (and then you could sign up for my "fear of fridges" therapy). No, neither of these ways are effective or practical or even desirable. It is only by working at the unconscious level that true change comes about - permanent change!

What we have to do is to get past the conscious level to a deeper region of the mind and it is here we will initiate change. Change will come about in a positive way. And what is more it is a pleasurable experience. You will enjoy the process and change the way you behave.

THE PROCESS

The techniques used in this process begin with taking you to a deep relaxed state. You will go beyond the conscious level to the unconscious where you are amenable to suggestion. It is here that the real, lasting accomplishments are made. The more you listen the easier it will be to enter a deep relaxed state, you will go deeper and deeper until the conscious mind disappears. You will enter a calm, peaceful, meditative state and hear positive affirmations about your eating habits. These will become deeply engrained in your being. Once this has been achieved your unconscious mind will remember them and act on them in your waking life.
