Northwest Trails v1.62 – Fixes Trails Above N 50°

This is just a quick release to correct the major issue in version 1.61, a skewing of the data north of 50 degrees north latitude that resulted in trails being off around 75 feet in BC and AB up to miles off in Alaska. I’m still trying to determine how that could have happened, but luckily thanks to back-ups I was able to restore things to their correct locations and re-integrate the recent additions. I apologize for not getting a fix out sooner, but I was gone all last week on vacation with limited computer time. I should know better by now not to rush a release out just before leaving!

Re-incorporating the affected data ended up being a fair amount of manual labor, so there was a lot of opportunity for human error. Please let me know if you see any issues!

Northwest Trails v1.61 Released – Now with More BC!

It’s been a busy month! This release marks one of the the biggest additions of data that Northwest Trails has ever seen. Perhaps the most significant change is a wealth of data in the North Vancouver, BC, area gleaned from Garmin Connect courtesy of Simoneyes. We are now starting to see BC fill in a bit like it should (though there is still a long way to go)! In addition, version 1.61 includes a revamping of trails in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie and Wenatchee National Forests courtesy of new Forest Service data provided by Hiker.org, plus the addition of or adjustment to a myriad of rail trails in the Northwest courtesy of TrailLink.com. That’s all on top of a cornucopia of data submitted by NWT users old and new alike.

Anytime there is this much change to the data I get a little nervous, as it just means more opportunities for me to mess something up. So, please take a look and let me know where you spot any errors.

New Releases of Northwest Trails and Northwest Topos Today

As many of you are aware, Northwest Trails has never displayed properly in Garmin’s BaseCamp software, and with the new release of MapSource 6.16.1, it was failing to display properly there as well. This was due to changes in the way that Garmin was handling the preview map in the software. Well, after some trial-and-error I discovered the cause of the issue and this release makes the changes that allow the trails to display as expected in both applications. Hooray!

Even bigger changes are present in the new release of Northwest Topos, although they are perhaps not as visible to the average user. These changes have resulted in a complete overhaul and re-export of each and every map tile in the mapset. Foremost among the changes is that the tiles are now broken out by WGS84 coordinates rather than NAD27 coordinates. In simple terms, this means that the tile borders are oriented directly north-and-south (and east-and-west) in MapSource and on the GPS, thereby helping to minimize the gapping that occurs between tiles when they are not so oriented. I’ve also overhauled the hydrology to properly break out perennial and intermittent streams, added a number of missing POIs, and updated the contour line intervals in many areas.

Northwest Trails v1.57 Now Available

Thanks to a project shipping at work, a family vacation, and a mother in the hospital, it’s been a very busy couple of months! This means that I haven’t been able to get a release of Northwest Trails out for a while and so this one is packed with new submissions.

There have been some significant changes behind the scenes on the project as well. You’ll note that the downloads are considerably smaller now despite containing more data. This is because I have moved from using GPSMapEdit for generating the Polish MP files (the files used to compile the map images that install on your computer and in your GPS) to Global Mapper. With Global Mapper, I can automate the entire mapset creation process so that once I have all of the trail changes in the database, I can effectively push a button, sit back, and wait for the process to pop out the finished install package. It saves a lot of manual effort and reduces the chance for human error in that sequence of steps. Global Mapper also stores the data displayed for different zoom levels in a different way than GPSMapEdit, leading to the smaller file size.

I now have the Northwest Topos process automated as well, which is an even larger time saver and will mean that I can release Northwest Trails and Northwest Topos concurrently with the same up-to-date trail information. First, though, I need to get some other changes in for Northwest Topos before releasing the next version.

I’ve been busy updating various mapsets during the past month and am ready to release new versions of three of them: Northwest Trails, Northwest Snow Trails, and Northwest Topos!

I’ll start with Northwest Topos, since the most significant changes have happened there. Coverage for Washington is now complete with the addition of many new tiles since version 0.04. Perhaps more significant is the fact that I’ve abandoned the idea of using 40′ contour intervals for all tiles. As I worked on more and more tiles (especially those covering the Columbia Plateau), it became clear that 40′ was simply too great an interval for many areas. I am now in the process of converting all tiles to follow the intervals seen on the USGS 7.5-minute topo maps of the same areas. Thus, for relatively flat areas you will see 10′ contours, while for in-between areas (like the Puget Sound lowlands and foothills), you will see 20′ intervals. Only the most mountainous areas will use 40′ intervals. The conversion process will take some time, so for now you will see a mish-mash of converted and unconverted tiles.

Two New Versions of Beta Mapsets Posted

I’ve posted new versions of a couple of mapsets today:

Northwest Topos

It’s been a while since I’ve updated this mapset, although I’ve not lacked a desire to do so. If all goes well I will have Washington State complete (and the mapset out of “beta” status) within a month. This update adds a few new tiles and allows you to select normal or high visibility trail types at install similar to Northwest Trails.

Northwest Snow Trails

This is a new mapset that contains cross-country ski trails, snowshoe trails and snowmobile trails for the Northwest. For those of you remember when Northwest Trails included snow trails, you’ll recognize that this mapset contains all of those trails that were peeled out of that mapset a year ago. It also includes a number of new additions. I consider this very much a “beta” in that the coverage is definitely lacking (note, for example, that popular destinations such as West Yellowstone, Seeley Lake, et al. are void of data). Hopefully it won’t take long before we get these areas filled in. Send in your data!
