Northern Today to cease publication for summer, new concept, design will greet campus in August

Northern Today is taking the summer off. The next regular issue will publish Monday, Aug. 23. Staff in the Division of University Relations will spend those off months developing a new conception of Northern Today with broader coverage and reader appeal in a format that is more dynamic and interactive. When the new Northern Today is unveiled in August, faculty, staff, students and even members of the local community will find opportunities to participate.

Paul Carpenter remembers well the desolation of the New Mexico desert at night, how his sore and swollen feet somehow managed to keep turning the pedals on his bicycle while the road�s shadows and his own tired mind played their own tricks. Enveloped by cold and darkness, and deprived of sleep, the chair of NIU�s Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education spent three full days and half of a fourth in pursuit of a 1,044-mile goal.

Kathi Bennett to lead women�s basketball

Kathi Bennett, a veteran collegiate head coach who has guided three programs to eight NCAA Tournaments and five conference championships while posting a career winning percentage of .628, has been named head women's basketball coach at Northern Illinois University. Bennett becomes the ninth head coach in program history.

NIU, Illinois Valley Community College forge partnership for nursing degree completion program

NIU and Illinois Valley Community College will begin in the fall of 2011 to offer a bachelor�s degree completion program for registered nurses who live and work nearby.

Faculty from NIU�s School of Nursing and Health Studies will travel to the Illinois Valley to teach the introductory course and the capstone course while the rest of the classes will take place online.

Engineering names dean�s suite after NIU alum, longtime friend

NIU�s College of Engineering and Engineering Technology has honored a longtime supporter by naming the dean�s suite in honor of Arthur and Florence Graffam.

�We are delighted to name the dean�s suite after the Graffams,� Dean Promod Vohra says.

Former NIU administrator Ken Beasley dies, served as assistant to President La Tourette

�Dedicated� is how former colleagues describe retired NIU administrator Kenneth L. Beasley, who died May 12 at the age of 79. Beasley, a native of Bedford, Ind., began working at NIU in 1964. During his tenure, he held several positions, including assistant to former President John La Tourette. He retired in 1992.
