Warm Days, Festivals, Fiestas and Fun...

Spring is well under way here at The Beach and May is shaping up to be a wonderful month for family trips, weekend getaways, and excellent deals on Myrtle Beach golf packages.

May's first weekend is a grand one with the 27th Annual Rivertown Music & Arts Festival in historic downtown Conway on May 4th. Festivities include the Chicora Classic Car show, the Farmers' Market, and performances by lots of young local talent - dancing, singing and more! The evening is topped off with a street concert featuring The Steady Hand String Band, The River Whyless (formerly Do It To Julia), and stellar mandolin-player Jenni Lyn Gardner & Friends. Other music events this weekend include an encore appearance by the popular Oak Ridge Boys on stage at Barefoot Landing's Alabama Theatre. For the younger set, Band of Horses will be center stage in the Concert Hall at the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach.

If your tastes run more toward theatre and stage, you're in luck. The spring run of The Color Purple will end this weekend with two performances Saturday (May 4th) and a matinee Sunday (May 5th) at the Theatre of the Republic in old town Conway. Click for details.

The weekend of May 11th marks the return of MayFest on Main. It's Cool to Keep it Clean!

Low-Impact Beach Vacationing is Great for the Environment and Everyone.

That's right... it's very cool to NOT leave your mark on the beach. Keeping our wonderful beach clean and beautiful takes a lot of effort from everybody. The City of North Myrtle Beach does an excellent job of raking and cleaning the beach early every morning so you and your family can enjoy playing and relaxing by the surf. Receptacles are conveniently placed every few hundred yards near the dune line so there's no excuse for leaving trash on the beach.

Please take a few minutes before you leave the beach each day to make sure you're not leaving any water bottles, beverage cans, or other trash behind. Enjoy those tasty, frozen treats you purchase from the beach vendors but please don't leave the containers and plastic spoons on the sand when you leave. Make the short stroll and drop it all in the nearby trash can. Your effort will make a difference and is truly appreciated. It may even set an example for those around you, too!

The City has a few newer regulations to make your beach time better and safer. Due to the increased use of canopies, tents and other large shading devices on the beach, new rules are in place to prevent them from interfering with public safety and emergency rescue personnel from having swift access to people who may need assistance on the beach or in the water. Shading devices may not be set up on the beach before 8 AM and must be removed from the beach by 7 PM daily. Detailed information can be found online.

Beach walks are some of the most pleasant ways to unwind and exercise. In the summer, you'll often see me and an amazing number of families, couples and singles out enjoying a stroll by the ocean... especially in the evening when it's cooler. Make some time and take a walk - relax and listen to the surf, check out the moon, stars and planets.

Celebrate Independence Day in North Myrtle Beach!

The Week of the Fourth is always a fantastic time at the beach with festivals, parades, concerts and a night sky streaming with fiery rockets, booming starbursts and sparkling showers. 19th Annual North Myrtle Beach Fireworks Spectacular - blasts off from the Cherry Grove Pier at 3500 North Ocean Boulevard starting at 9:30 pm. It's a popular show so we suggest you hit the beach well before the first rocket's red glare. Bring a beach chair, a cooler with snacks and beverages, settle in and enjoy the pyrotechnic celebration. Salute from the Shore - 4th of July Military Flyover of the SC coast gives you a chance to honor our armed forces as you salute the flyover by four F-16s of the 79th "Flying Tigers" Fighter Squadron. The flyover starts at the NC state line at 1 pm and continues south, ending at Hilton Head Island at 1:30. For the Grand Strand area, we suggest being on the beach before 1 pm. New & Improved Farmers Market Reopens May 25

Be sure to check out our local Farmers Market when you’re vacationing in North Myrtle Beach this summer. The market is located off Highway 17 on 1st Avenue South (turn right at Martini’s Restaurant). There’s plenty of on-site free parking and lots to see while you wander among the booths.

Two new open-air, metal-roofed shelters connected by colorful shade sails will provide over 4,000 square feet of covered space for farmers and vendors to display and sell their fresh produce, fruits and merchandise. Vendors and shoppers will welcome the shaded relief from the summer sun, protection from the occasional summer shower, and the new restroom facilities.

As a member of the Waccamaw Market Cooperative, the North Myrtle Beach Farmers Market supports Certified South Carolina Grown products. The market will be open beginning May 25th on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Locals and vacationing families love visiting the Farmers Market to fill their pantries with a wide variety of healthy, locally grown foods. Last summer, I made a habit of stopping by at least once each week to pick up a basket of tasty tomatoes and a box of juicy South Carolina peaches. Often, I’d find a watermelon or cantaloupe begging to come home with me, too.

In addition to produce, you’ll find vendors selling everything from local shrimp and seafood to jams, jellies, honey, and handmade crafts. I’ve even picked up some very helpful gardening tips and beautiful potted plants from Jay & Connie at the Tropical Nursery booth.

Another great feature… the Market is conveniently located just across from the wonderful North Myrtle Beach Public Library. You’ll find lots to read, a wide selection of movies to check out, and plenty of computer terminals with free WIFI.

Come on out to the Farmers Market this summer. Fresh and local is definitely the BEST!

Go Green at the St Pat's Festival in NMB

March is shaping up to be a fun month with Spring pushing and shoving to get here as early as possible.

Off-season rates are amazingly affordable and the weather has been wonderful. There are early blooms all around and tons of fun things to do. Some of our suggestions for the next few weeks include:

The annual St. Patrick's Day Festival on March 17th in North Myrtle Beach has one of the largest parades on the Grand Strand with more than 100 floats and entries. The parade starts at 9am but you'd better head to Main Street early to claim your prime viewing area along the sidewalks. Feel free to bring along a folding chair and get ready for a fun morning.

When the parade is over, the fun is just beginning. Now it's festival time! You'll find over 125 vendors displaying their arts & crafts, festival treats and more. There will be two stages with continuous entertainment - music, dance, and more music. Be sure to bring the "wee" lads and lassies, too! There'll be a kids' FUN ZONE with rides, inflatables and games.

Scheduled entertainment includes the New York Shields Pipes & Drums, Triple Toe Cloggers, Wake District Pipes & Drums, the bands Barleyjuice and Ceol na Gael. Remember to wear something green.

Spring Music Concerts... over the next few weeks, the Grand Strand will see many hot acts take center stage at our popular venues including the House of Blues and Alabama Theatre at Barefoot Landing, Broadway at the Beach's Palace Theatre, and the historic Myrtle Beach Train Depot.

The Alabama Theatre will feature Don Williams on the 17th, a super Motown evening with the Drifters, Coasters and Platters the 24th, and Lorrie Morgan & Pam Tillis on the 31st.

The House of Blues has hot tribute bands bringing back the music of Metallica & Guns n' Roses on the 17th and Poison & Motley Crew on the 23rd. The BIG event is the Monday after the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament and gala concert with Hootie & the Blowfish and friends (Sister Hazel, Javier Colon and more).

South by Southeast Music Feasts wrap up their spring concert series at the Depot with the Randall Bramblett Band on the 10th.

At the Palace Theatre you can catch a lively performance of Hooray for Hollywood all through the month of March and a special performance on the 30th by Howie Mandel of America's Got Talent.

Try a day trip to Brookgreen Gardens and appreciate nature and the arts. Featured special events in March include the "Birds in Art" Exhibition and "Down by the Riverside" & Other Spirituals.

Pirate's Voyage... Myrtle Beach's Newest Attraction

Have you heard the latest? The spirit of the infamous pirate Blackbeard is returning to the Carolina coast! After a successful run of 19 seasons, Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede has undergone an amazing $11 Million transformation to become the newest Myrtle Beach attraction - Pirates Voyage. For those who are not too savvy on pirate history, Edward Teach - better known as Blackbeard - was one of the most notorious pirates and he roamed the Carolina coast from 1716 through 1718. A shrewd villian, he avoided the use of force when possible and relied on his fearsome image instead.

Why is he special to South Carolina? In May of 1718, Blackbeard's ships and crews blockaded the port of Charleston, stopping and looting all vessels entering or leaving. He continued the blockade and thievery for nearly a week in Charleston before sailing north to Topsail Island in North Carolina - passing just off the coast of what is now Myrtle Beach's Grand Strand.

The last ship he captured, Queen Anne's Revenge, was a short-lived prize for Mr. Teach as it became grounded on the shoals of Beaufort Inlet. It was a tremendous loss to Blackbeard of both ship and captured goods. Only six months later, his voyages were ended and he and his crew were no more.

Rivertown Music & Arts Festival

Saturday, May 7th, the historic city of Conway plays host for the annual Rivertown Music & Arts Festival. Usually featuring Blues, Jazz, and Gospel; rest assured… there is always something for everyone. Headlining the festival this year will be Sea Cruz at 4:30, Southern Blue at 6:00, and the main act, Sol Driven Train, at 7:30. SOS Spring Safari at North Myrtle Beach

Dancin' in the Street and on the Beach in O.D.

It’s finally spring and the forecast is for beautiful, warm weather and tons of SOS beach fun! There will be a few thousand happy beach music and shag dance fans flocking to North Myrtle Beach to enjoy the best the beach has to offer. Kicking off today, the SOS Spring Safari is just about the biggest adult beach party on the East Coast with dozens of events scheduled for the the ten-day celebration.

Speaking of celebrations... the O.D. Arcade and Lounge is celebrating its 20th year as a a part of SOS and doing it in their usual style with "porch parties with the porch people”. There are three porch parties this year led by DJ Murl Augustine, aka, The Wild Thang. Make sure your vacation rental is pet-friendly.
The first important element is to make sure your rental accommodation permits pets. A variety of condos, houses and hotels will allow pets, usually for a nominal fee and with some restrictions. Other vacation rentals may have strict policies prohibiting pets in or on their property. Appropriate arrangements should be made and confirmed prior to arriving for your vacation. It may still be winter up north but it's definitely Spring at the Beach! With another weekend forecast of sunshine and temps reaching the 70s, I'm extremely happy that I live in North Myrtle Beach.
