Baseball - Take me out to the ballfield so I can root for the hometown Myrtle Beach Pelicans as they take on the rest of the Carolina League. As the "A" team for the Texas Rangers, the Pelicans have plenty of future stars on their field of dreams. Homestands coming up include games June 4th-7th, 14th-17th, and 28th through July 3rd. FREE Family-Friendly Events - North Myrtle Beach welcomes you with festivals & flicks to make your beach vacation even more special. The Music on Main concert series presents The Herringbones on the 7th, Leggz playing classic rock on the 21st, and Atlantic Groove performing beach music hits the 28th. These concerts are from 6:30 to 8:30 at Main Street's Horseshoe or the Main Street Stage.

Additional FREE Family-Friendly NMB events in June include the Sounds of Summer concert at McLean Park from 7 to 9pm on the 15th and Movies @ McLean with an outdoor showing of "Puss in Boots" on the 8th - showtime begins at 8:40. (see more info online)

Celebrity Concerts - Catch some exciting performances at the House of Blues and Alabama Theatre, both located at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach. The June concert schedule at the HOB includes The Little River Band (8th), Gretchen Wilson (9th), Dr John with Gov't Mule (12th), and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals (21st). The hot ticket at the Alabama Theatre is for the Vince Gill concert June 14th.

New & Improved Farmers Market Reopens May 25

Be sure to check out our local Farmers Market when you’re vacationing in North Myrtle Beach this summer. The market is located off Highway 17 on 1st Avenue South (turn right at Martini’s Restaurant). There’s plenty of on-site free parking and lots to see while you wander among the booths.

Two new open-air, metal-roofed shelters connected by colorful shade sails will provide over 4,000 square feet of covered space for farmers and vendors to display and sell their fresh produce, fruits and merchandise. Vendors and shoppers will welcome the shaded relief from the summer sun, protection from the occasional summer shower, and the new restroom facilities.

As a member of the Waccamaw Market Cooperative, the North Myrtle Beach Farmers Market supports Certified South Carolina Grown products. The market will be open beginning May 25th on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Locals and vacationing families love visiting the Farmers Market to fill their pantries with a wide variety of healthy, locally grown foods. Last summer, I made a habit of stopping by at least once each week to pick up a basket of tasty tomatoes and a box of juicy South Carolina peaches. Often, I’d find a watermelon or cantaloupe begging to come home with me, too.

In addition to produce, you’ll find vendors selling everything from local shrimp and seafood to jams, jellies, honey, and handmade crafts. I’ve even picked up some very helpful gardening tips and beautiful potted plants from Jay & Connie at the Tropical Nursery booth.

Another great feature… the Market is conveniently located just across from the wonderful North Myrtle Beach Public Library. You’ll find lots to read, a wide selection of movies to check out, and plenty of computer terminals with free WIFI.

Come on out to the Farmers Market this summer. Fresh and local is definitely the BEST!

Go Green at the St Pat's Festival in NMB

March is shaping up to be a fun month with Spring pushing and shoving to get here as early as possible.

Off-season rates are amazingly affordable and the weather has been wonderful. There are early blooms all around and tons of fun things to do. Some of our suggestions for the next few weeks include:

The annual St. Patrick's Day Festival on March 17th in North Myrtle Beach has one of the largest parades on the Grand Strand with more than 100 floats and entries. The parade starts at 9am but you'd better head to Main Street early to claim your prime viewing area along the sidewalks. Feel free to bring along a folding chair and get ready for a fun morning.

When the parade is over, the fun is just beginning. Now it's festival time! You'll find over 125 vendors displaying their arts & crafts, festival treats and more. There will be two stages with continuous entertainment - music, dance, and more music. Be sure to bring the "wee" lads and lassies, too! There'll be a kids' FUN ZONE with rides, inflatables and games.

Scheduled entertainment includes the New York Shields Pipes & Drums, Triple Toe Cloggers, Wake District Pipes & Drums, the bands Barleyjuice and Ceol na Gael. Remember to wear something green.

Spring Music Concerts... over the next few weeks, the Grand Strand will see many hot acts take center stage at our popular venues including the House of Blues and Alabama Theatre at Barefoot Landing, Broadway at the Beach's Palace Theatre, and the historic Myrtle Beach Train Depot.

The Alabama Theatre will feature Don Williams on the 17th, a super Motown evening with the Drifters, Coasters and Platters the 24th, and Lorrie Morgan & Pam Tillis on the 31st.

The House of Blues has hot tribute bands bringing back the music of Metallica & Guns n' Roses on the 17th and Poison & Motley Crew on the 23rd. The BIG event is the Monday after the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament and gala concert with Hootie & the Blowfish and friends (Sister Hazel, Javier Colon and more).

South by Southeast Music Feasts wrap up their spring concert series at the Depot with the Randall Bramblett Band on the 10th.

At the Palace Theatre you can catch a lively performance of Hooray for Hollywood all through the month of March and a special performance on the 30th by Howie Mandel of America's Got Talent.

Try a day trip to Brookgreen Gardens and appreciate nature and the arts. Featured special events in March include the "Birds in Art" Exhibition and "Down by the Riverside" & Other Spirituals.

Do you miss seeing all of your family members? Do the family reunions you try to plan never really come together? Perhaps you never found the right location. Look no further; make your next reunion a rousing success by following these simple tips. Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach are prime locations for hosting family reunions. First of all, the name says it best… you’ll have the BEACH! Plus, your group will have a myriad of additional exciting attractions, amazing entertainment venues, wonderful dining and shopping opportunities, and more. You can be assured your group will have a full and fun experience. But before we venture off into the specifics of what our area offers, let’s start with some tips on how to plan a fantastic family reunion.

Tip #1. Use your reunion location’s chamber of commerce or convention and visitors bureau to assist with your planning. They provide an incredible amount of information, can assist you in checking rates, and provide helpful visitor guides. Not only are their services free, you can get all you need in one stop. We suggest trying one or more of our super spacious vacation homes or villas. Pirate's Voyage... Myrtle Beach's Newest Attraction

It's Buccaneers instead of Belles at Pirates Voyage.

Have you heard the latest? The spirit of the infamous pirate Blackbeard is returning to the Carolina coast! After a successful run of 19 seasons, Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede has undergone an amazing $11 Million transformation to become the newest Myrtle Beach attraction - Pirates Voyage. The booming summer vacation season will just be getting underway as this spectacular show changes its theme from plantations and southern belles to pirate's treasure and sword fights. The grand opening is set for June 3rd.

For those who are not too savvy on pirate history, Edward Teach - better known as Blackbeard - was one of the most notorious pirates and he roamed the Carolina coast from 1716 through 1718. A shrewd villian, he avoided the use of force when possible and relied on his fearsome image instead.

Why is he special to South Carolina? In May of 1718, Blackbeard's ships and crews blockaded the port of Charleston, stopping and looting all vessels entering or leaving. He continued the blockade and thievery for nearly a week in Charleston before sailing north to Topsail Island in North Carolina - passing just off the coast of what is now Myrtle Beach's Grand Strand.

The last ship he captured, Queen Anne's Revenge, was a short-lived prize for Mr. Teach as it became grounded on the shoals of Beaufort Inlet. It was a tremendous loss to Blackbeard of both ship and captured goods. Only six months later, his voyages were ended and he and his crew were no more.

Celebrate and appreciate history! Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for "fifth of May". Many people have the misconception that Cinco de Mayo is the equivalent of Mexican Independence Day. In fact, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. The Battle of Puebla is important for at least two reasons. First, the 4,000 Mexican soldiers were considerably outnumbered but they defeated the 8,000 soldiers of the much better-equipped French Army. Rivertown Music & Arts Festival

Saturday, May 7th, the historic city of Conway plays host for the annual Rivertown Music & Arts Festival. Usually featuring Blues, Jazz, and Gospel; rest assured… there is always something for everyone. Headlining the festival this year will be Sea Cruz at 4:30, Southern Blue at 6:00, and the main act, Sol Driven Train, at 7:30. The festival starts at 10 am, will keep on going until dusk and will include artist exhibits and demonstrations from the various genres of painting, pottery, jewelry, glass, metal and mixed media. Antique car enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the car show hosted by the Chicora Car Club. Gourmet food, hot dogs and local cuisine will also be available in the food court area. Dancin' in the Street and on the Beach in O.D.

It’s finally spring and the forecast is for beautiful, warm weather and tons of SOS beach fun! There will be a few thousand happy beach music and shag dance fans flocking to North Myrtle Beach to enjoy the best the beach has to offer. Kicking off today, the SOS Spring Safari is just about the biggest adult beach party on the East Coast with dozens of events scheduled for the the ten-day celebration.

Speaking of celebrations... the O.D. Arcade and Lounge is celebrating its 20th year as a a part of SOS and doing it in their usual style with "porch parties with the porch people”. There are three porch parties this year led by DJ Murl Augustine, aka, The Wild Thang. These fun events are on the calendar for 2PM Saturday, April 9th; 5PM Wednesday, April 13th with the the last porch party Saturday, April 16th directly after the big parade. The Arcade is also hosting a Ladies' Hat Party this year at 1PM Sunday, April 10th.

Of course, a highlight of the SOS Spring Safari is the ACSC/SOS Parade on Main Street. This 16th Annual Parade will begin at 1PM Saturday the 16th. More than 1,100 people participated in last year’s parade so get out early and find a good spot on Main Street to watch the festivities.

Top Tips for Pet Safety and Etiquette While on Vacation

All right! It's time for the family trip and Rover is coming along. For a fun and relaxing vacation, make sure you take the necessary steps to ensure your pet's safety on this adventure.

Make sure your vacation rental is pet-friendly.
The first important element is to make sure your rental accommodation permits pets. A variety of condos, houses and hotels will allow pets, usually for a nominal fee and with some restrictions. Other vacation rentals may have strict policies prohibiting pets in or on their property. Appropriate arrangements should be made and confirmed prior to arriving for your vacation. For those of you who wish to travel with your canine companion, Century 21 Thomas Beach Vacations has a selection of pet-friendly accommodations from which to choose.

Keep your pets hydrated.
It's easy to get overheated on a hot, summer day. A water bowl secured somewhere in your car and a few bottles of water will make traveling with your dog easier and safer. A resourceful suggestion... Keep a Frisbee in the car. It's excellent for playtime with your pup and can also be used as a water dish.

Exercise your pets early mornings or evenings.
Summer days can be very hot, especially from late morning to mid-afternoon. Take advantage of the more pleasant times of the day to exercise your pet. Remember to take a leash.

Obey local pet-related laws.
Municipalities each have their own rules and regulations regarding pets in public areas. Leashes are often required and pets may be permitted on the beach only during certain times of the day or in specific areas. When you take your pet outdoors, remember to carry a scoop and several plastic bags. Always pick up after your pets and remove any pet waste. BE RESPONSIBLE.

Be considerate of others.
When you take your pet along on your vacation, it is very important that you do not infringe on the rights of others. Dogs will bark... occasionally. Allowing continued barking or baying is unacceptable. By law, other families are entitled to "quiet enjoyment" of their vacation rental and time.

Myrtle Beach Area Fun for August

July zipped right on by and August seems to be in a rush, too. There's still loads of fun to be found at the Beach - from North Myrtle Beach to Myrtle's south end. A nice day trip to Georgetown or even Charleston isn't a bad idea either. If you and your family haven't taken a summer vacation yet, this is a wonderful time. Myrtle Beach Area Fun (July 16th - 31st, 2010)

HOT... SUMMER... FUN! It's been a fantastic summer here in North Myrtle Beach - lots of sunshine, warm surf, wide beaches full of smiling faces and laughing children. We were on the beach in Windy Hill Sunday with our grands, Archer & Oscar, and had a blast watching them play in the tidal pools and frolic in the surf. Their beach fun was capped off with a frozen slushy from Maggie, our favorite push-cart vendor... a pink slushy for Archer and a blue one for Oscar, naturally.
