The Georgia Tech football team began its offseason early morning (5:30 AM) workouts this morning.

Through these doors passed the 2009 ACC Champions this morning.

Spring practice won’t start until March 29th with the Spring game scheduled for April 24th.

The bus would be leaving the day of the game at approximately 10:00AM and returning the same day following the game.

Top 5 Pictures From The Game

1-A-Back Anthony Allen catches the first Touchdown pass of the 2009 football season for Georgia Tech on a 26 yard fade to the southwest corner.

This was the Yellow Jacket’s only score in the second half after a 31 point first half. Josh Nesbitt completed 6 out of 11 passes for 141 yds with no interceptions. His percentage is not representative of his accuracy since the receivers dropped a number of his accurate passes.

1b- Anthony Allen and Demaryius Thomas celebrate after Allen’s touchdown reception.

Thomas caught 4 passes for 101 yards including a long 56 yard bomb.

2- Defensive End Derrick Morgan enjoys the thrill of making a play while Morgan Burnett acknowledges him in the background.

Derrick Morgan had 2 sacks in the game (5 tackles total) M. Burnett had 5 tackles, 1 pass breakup and 1 interception.

3- B-Back Jonathan Dwyer takes a knee in prayer during the halftime break.

Dwyer rushed for 95 yards & 2 touchdowns including a 74 yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.

4- Team captains take the field: 54- Sedric Griffin, 10- Martin Frierson, 71- Cord Howard

5- Paul Johnson, eager to take the field, rushes the Ramblin Wreck.

From May 21st to July 2nd I was at my version of a summer co-op. I graduated from Marine Corps Officer Candidate School on July 2nd. The last 10 days have been time for rest, recovery, and catching up with the college football world.

Now that I’m up to speed with all the latest news and rumors, the North Avenue Bulletin is back online.

NCAA Football 2010

The official release date of NCAA Football 2010 is tomorrow Tuesday July 14.

The past season on the flats has made an impact on the college football video game world and Georgia Tech’s offense on the game has largely been revamped.

Check out the video showing you our 18th ranked Yellow Jackets against Virginia Tech.

NBA Draft Lottery 2009 results

On April 20th when Gani Lawal announced his intent to go into the NBA draft, most Yellow Jacket fans were feeling good about his chances of coming back next year.

A few mock drafts later, it looks like Gani’s chance to be drafted relatively early has only gotten better:

NCAA 2010 Features Georgia Tech Offense (Details) [Video Games]

Background

If you’ve played NCAA Football from EA Sports you know that Georgia Tech’s offense doesn't work like its supposed to in the current generation of the game.
And if you’ve follow Georgia Tech football you probably know that we run a variation (no tight ends) of the “flexbone”, although some prefer to call it the spread option.
EA sports has recognized the impact of the triple-option scheme in major college football following Georgia Tech’s & Navy’s success in the last few seasons, so they’ve revamped the flexbone in the new NCAA Football 2010 scheduled for release on July 14, 2009.

Their “goal was to take it above and beyond anything that had been done previously with the Flexbone offense on any platform.”

They’re using the “Navy Coach’s” film as a model for the new improvements.

“Last summer we were able to acquire the actual coach’s game film of the Navy Flexbone offense.”

Congratulations to Sean Bedford, Mario Edwards and Zach Krish, Georgia Tech’s newest football student/athletes on scholarship.

Bedford, a redshirt junior from Gainesville, Florida has received a great deal of attention throughout the spring as he worked his way up to the first team center position.

Sean is one of the few Aerospace Engineering majors playing for the Yellow Jackets, this scholarship recognizes his effort on the field and in the classroom.

Krish, also a redshirt junior from Snellville, Georgia has been making similar strides on the gridiron and with his academics. He’s a Civil Engineering major and along with Bedford walked on to the team his freshman year (2006).

Edwards, a RS Junior as well, transferred from Virginia Tech roughly a year ago (last summer) and has been working his way up the depth chart to the #1 wolf position where he played during the T-Day game. Mario is majoring in History, Technology, and Science (HTS).

They are all class acts, and we look forward to seeing more of them on the flats for the next few years.

Paul Johnson’s first Tweet… & GT Madden Ratings

About a week ago I found @CoachPJ on Twitter, an account that claims to be used by a Paul Johnson.

As with most celebrity Twitter accounts I was skeptical at first on the authenticity of the account, so I checked who “Coach PJ” is followed by to see if any GT Athletics accounts followed him back and surprisingly he DOES have Tech’s official @GTAthletics account following him (they're only following 18 people) as well as a few other GT fans and AJC users.

As of now, he still hasn’t posted any Tweets, but if/when he does I’m interested in what he’ll talk about. Will the account be controlled by an assistant and use it mostly for recruting, will Georgia Tech’s coach share his thoughts on life via 140 character messages, or will it be a mix of the two? We’ll have to wait and see.

EA Sports recently released the rookie ratings for its Madden 2010 game scheduled for release this August

Only three Georgia Tech players made this version of the roster: Michael Johnson (73 Overall), Vance Walker (69 Overall), & Darryl Richard (50 Overall). See their full stats here.

What a wonderful saturday. Excellent football weather, great crowd, Tech celebs, good football.

Below are a few photos from today’s game which matched the #1 Defense (Gold Team) against the #1 Offense (White Team). The Gold team won 31-28.

“The Last One”

Motivation and Intensity

Throughout today’s practice you could notice the players were playing harder and moving faster than usual.

During the first set of drills, the defense was so pumped about this being their last spring practice that it looked as if they had just scored on an interception.

Practice ended about 5 minutes early, and the first half of the periods were done about 20 minutes early.

Practice Notes

A handful of high school prospects watched today’s practice, and the overall crowd was around 25 people.
2 quarterbacks took all the snaps during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, although they all wore limited contacted shirts.
The wide receivers and defensive backs ran a 1-on-1 blocking drill (with the recievers protecting a hat on the ground) which Head Coach Paul Johnson watched very closely. Without a doubt, his observations of these players during this drill will affect the depth chart.

It’s hard to say which players truly stood out during these drills since often one side was over whelmed due to mismatches between the player’s strengths.

Coach Johnson also observed closely the 1-on-1 passing drills as he scouted which receivers had the best catching ability.
The beach (injured player area) hasn’t been getting any smaller throughout this week.
During 7-on-7, the offense progressively got closer to the end zone every 3-4 plays.

Practice Observations

During the first period of 11-on-11 the run blocking was not at its finest and the longest play was a 20 yd pass to Roddy Jones.
During the second period of 11-on-11, a large number of the plays were pass plays and the offensive line did a good job protecting the pocket.
Jon Dwyer had a strong carry up the middle in which nobody could bring him down.
Preston Lyons had two carries (one against the 1st team D and 1 against the 2nd team D) where the blocking and his running combined for major yards.
Bay-Bay had a very nice play in which he flashed his elusiveness after the catch.
Derrick Morgan showed his vertical ability when Dwyer tried to block him low while protecting the passer.

Tuesday throws things off

Today’s practice begun at 4:15, but for some players it started at 5:15, some ended at that time, and some weren’t able to come at all. That’s what happens when practice happens when practice gets switched to Tuesday, a day on which many students have labs and/or other classes which they can’t really miss.

There was also a much smaller crowd than usual out there today, I probably counted about 13 people at the most.

Practice Notes

All the quarterbacks practiced today (to some extent).
Good weather, but a chilly wind showed up towards the end.
Today’s uniform was helmets and shoulder pads.
- The team did do a 11-on-11 scrimmage but the plays were blown dead when the ball carrier was tagged
Actor Quenton Aaron was at practice for the first time in at least a week. He worked with Coach Ciano a little bit.

Practice Observations

I noticed a new “pass” play out there that will spice up our offense.
Willie White had the catch of the day on a one handed catch in the end zone on a fade route (during 7-on-7).

Last Practice Tomorrow

The Jackets have one more practice left Wednesday @ 3:30 PM. Weather forecast is 65° and sunny.

Beesball Tonight

The Yellow Jacket Baseball team just started its game against the bad guys. The game won’t be on TV but it can be heard on WREK radio and tracked HERE. As of the last edit the score was 2-0 in favor of the good guys.

Monday's practice re-scheduled

The Yellow Jacket football team will not be practicing today due to today's weather.

The team will practice tomorrow at 3:30 PM instead, and continue with practice on Wednesday.

I strongly recommend anyone who hasn't made it to a practice try and come out to one of these last open practices before the spring game.

A report of Friday & Saturdays practice will be up later.

Practice Report Day 10

4 more practices to go after today (and the spring game)

Atlanta provided the Yellow Jackets with a great temperature to get down to business on Rose Bowl field. The temperature was in the high 60s, and the sun was bright like a Fall Saturday’s afternoon.

Ever wonder what the beginning of practice is like?

I arrived at practice today before everyone else. Only thing on the Rose Bowl were the few baseballs that made it over the fence while the Beesball team warmed up prior to their 23-3 loss against Georgia Southern.

The first group of people to arrive on the scene were the assistants in their golf cart, followed by the camera crew as they setup the field bringing with them all the necessary equipment for a successful practice.

Coach Eric Ciano along with his strength and conditioning staff were the next people there. They set up the “beach” with all the lifting equipment and weights used to make the injured players strong.

The first player on the scene was actually former Jacket RB Tyler Evans who is no longer an active player on the roster, but has found ways to contribute from the sidelines.

Behind him were RS Freshmen K/P Chris Tanner and Cody Hutchings. Specialists are normally the first on the field and they use that time to warm up their long snapping/kicking/punting before the rest of the team arrives to practice special teams.

CB Jerrard Tarrant was the first non-specialist player to arrive from the locker room. His early arrival shows me that he wants more than anything to make up for the year of play time he lost and he’s doing a fine job working his way up the depth chart.

General Observations

Geoff Greco was back in action. Jason Hill was working hard from the moment stretches were over to get up to speed on the Defensive Tackle position.

Punt returning was emphasized again (more than Monday) and a smaller group of players were taking turns as returners.

The QBs were looking pretty sharp during 1-on-1 drills, but not so much during 7-on-7 (in part due to the receivers).

Live Hitting Observations

The offense ran an A-back misdirection play a number of times effectively. It took about 4 or 5 tries for the defense to stop it.

Preston Lyons was looking good running the ball up the middle, he had a 25 yard carry where he dragged a third of the team with him.

I’d say Alex Walker hat the hit of the day when he tackled the a-back the moment he caught the ball on a toss play.

Derrick Morgan made a good play breaking through the line and swatting down a pass.

In general I’ve noticed the defense hasn’t been playing (during the live hitting 11 on 11) with as much intensity and fire as earlier in the spring.

Practice Report Day 9

About Today

It might be April, but the wind chill in Atlanta today was in the 30s as the Yellow Jackets hit the Rose Bowl field for day nine of football practice.

Even though today’s spectators were few, Yellow Jacket commit Stephen Hill made an appearance along with a few other High School recruits/prospects.

General Observations

I noticed Tevin Washington is working with the special teams. Not as a returner, he was mostly used on the return team, not sure if this was his first day playing that role.

The Safeties and Wolf players did a drill that was fun to watch. The players gathered in a circle and one would jump into the middle and point at a player who would come at him similar to what you see Rams do in the National Geographic channel:

Jump to around 1:05 (and imagine they’re wearing pads and helmets)

Jason Hill and Emanuel Dieke were back on the field today getting a piece of the action.

The special teams period was not as long as last week, and more emphasis was placed on the punt return.

The QBs looked sharp during 1-1 passing drills, but the cold weather affected the receivers catching ability.

Scrimmage Observations

Jaybo Shaw and Cooper Taylor didn’t get an opportunity to shine today during the scrimmage period.

Luke Cox got many of the first team reps. He took a pitch down the sideline all the way, trucking one of the linebackers in the process.

Roddy Jones and Jamal Paige both had good runs.

Jason Peters is looking good as defensive tackle. He did a good job of stuffing the B-Back dive.

Jonathan Dwyer showed impressive burst on a short pass which he took a good distance.

Josh Nesbitt found Kevin Cone deep (50+ yards) in a man-to-man coverage situation.

The offensive line did a pretty good job forming protecting the pocket during pass plays.

Omoregie Uzzi was getting reps with the firs team.

We ran a play involving Roddy Jones which can simply be described with looking “awesome”.
