Alice in Wonderland non è solo un romanzo e nemmeno soltanto il nuovo film di Tim Burton (del quale in questo articolo trovate informazioni, immagini e recensioni): è uno stile ben definito fatto di abiti in stile gothic lolita, con accessori e decori che celebrano orologi e conigli, tazzine e cuori rossi. C’è chi si sente ingenua come Alice, chi altezzosa come la Regina Rossa o dolce come la Regina Bianca, chi pazza come il Cappellaio Matto o misteriosa come lo Stregatto.
Con l’uscita del film, molti brand si sono lasciati incantare da questa fiaba, sia per questioni di marketing e pubblicità, sia perchè è stato rispolverato un mito che è nel cuore di tutte le fanciulle.
Abbigliamento, accessori, trucchi e persino toys da collezione: da marzo 2010 la caccia è aperta per accaparrarsi le edizioni speciali e limitate. Non ci resta che inseguire anche noi il Bianconiglio e tuffarci nel Paese delle Meraviglie.

Alice in Wonderland is not just a novel or the new Tim Burton movie (in this article you will find information, pictures and reviews about this movie): it is a well-defined gothic lolita style with dresses, accessories and decorations that celebrate watches and rabbits, coffee cups and red hearts. Some people feel as naive as Alice, some as haughty as the Red Queen or as sweet as the White Queen, some as mad as the Mad Hatter or as mysterious as the Cheshire cat.
With the release of the film, many brands were enchanted by this tale, in terms of marketing and advertising, and because it is a myth that has always been in the heart of all the girls.
Clothing, accessories, makeup and even toys collections: from March 2010, the hunt is open to get the special and limited editions. We just have to chase the White Rabbit, and to fall on Wonderland.

Alice au Printemps des Merveilles

Printemps, il famoso department store di fashion e luxury brands di Parigi, dal 1 febbraio al 13 marzo 2010 ha celebrato l’uscita del film con un allestimento “da meraviglia”, ingolosendo i francesi che dovranno attendere fino al 24 marzo per l’uscita del film.
Le sue vetrine comunicano un’atmosfera sognante e surreale e vedono come protagonisti numerosi brand del settore del lusso che hanno realizzato abiti e allestimenti speciali in onore dell’eroina della Disney: Ann Demeulemeester, Alexander McQueen, Bernhard Willhelm, Charles Anastase, Christopher Kane, Chloé, Haider Ackermann, Manish Arora, Maison Martin Margiela e Nicholas Kirkwood. Protagonista di ogni vetrina è un manichino in versione Alice con una maschera da coniglio sul volto. Ogni marchio ha interpretato e messo in scena ciò che più lo ha attirato della fiaba, rendendo coprotagonisti degli oggetti bianchi in versione big-size: dei libri, un fungo, una bottiglia con scritto Buvez Moi (dal francese, Bevetemi), una tazza con dei dolci con scritto Mangez Moi (dal francese Mangiatemi), una teiera, un orologio da tasca, delle carte da gioco, la regina degli scacchi bianchi e un fantastico coniglio fatto di fiori.

Printemps, the famous department store which sells fashion and luxury brands in Paris, from February 1 to March 13, 2010, has celebrated the release of the movie with a “wonder” installation, enticing the French who will have to wait until March 24 for the release of the film.
Its shop windows communicate a dreamy, surreal atmosphere and many luxury brands made clothes and special fittings dedicated to the Disney heroines: Ann Demeulemeester, Alexander McQueen, Bernhard Willhelm, Charles Anastase, Christopher Kane, Chloé, Haider Ackermann, Manish Arora, Maison Martin Margiela and Nicholas Kirkwood.
The protagonist of each shop window is a Alice-dummy with a rabbit mask on her face. Each brand has interpreted and staged some details of the tale, making white objects in big-sized version become co-stars: some books, a fungus, a bottle that says Buvez Moi (”Drink Me”), a cup with sweets on which is written Mangez Moi (”Eat Me”), a teapot, a pocket watch, playing cards, the queen of the white chess and a fantastic rabbit made of flowers.

Un vero peccato che le calzature customizzate di Nicholas Kirkwood siano un pezzo unico. Azzurre, con tacco a scacchi bianco-nero e applicazioni con rose rosse, tazzine e orologio da tasca: sono proprio delle scarpe adatte per andare nel Paese delle Meraviglie.

A pity that the customized shoes by Nicholas Kirkwood are a unique piece. Blue shoes decorated with a heel with a chessboard pattern and with red roses, coffee cups and pocket watch: the proper shoes to go in Wonderland.

Tom Binns & Disney - Disney Signature & Disney Couture Jewelry

Tom Binns, designer irlandese di gioielli, ha creato ufficialmente due linee di bijoux per Disney, ispirandosi ai protagonisti del film di Tim Burton. I suoi gioielli sono barocchi, ricchi di elementi, decori e intarsi, quasi fossero dei tesori. Cilindri, tazzine, orologi con orecchie da coniglio, cuori rossi plasticosi, merletti bianchi e molto altro ancora. Qualcuno potrebbe definire cheap le sue collezioni, ma per noi fan di Alice sono veramente kawaii.
La linea Tom Binns for Walt Disney Signature è composta da sei gioielli esclusivi in edizione limitata che vanno dai $1,000 a $2,000, venduti in boutique selezionate.
La linea Tom Binns for Disney Couture, creata in collaborazione con Lucas Design International, è invece composta da 35 pezzi “più economici” che vanno da $100 a $500.

Tom Binns, Irish jewelry designer, has created two official lines of jewelry for Disney, inspired by the protagonists of the movie by Tim Burton. His jewelry is baroque, richly decorated, with inlays, like real treasures. Cylinders, cups, clocks with rabbit ears, red plastic hearts, white lace and much more. Someone might call them cheap, but for us, fans of Alice, they are really kawaii.
The line, that made Tom Binns for Walt Disney Signature, is composed of six exclusive limited-edition jewels, ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, sold in selected boutiques.
On the other hand the line, that made Tom Binns for Disney Couture, created in collaboration with Lucas Design International, is composed of 35 pieces “more economic” ranging from $100 to $500.

Swarovski - The Disney Collection 2010

Per la primavera 2010 Swarovski propone una linea di gioielli dedicata a Disney, e in particolar modo ad Alice in Wonderland.
Swarovski ha riprodotto fedelmente la collana che Alice indossa nel film che ha come soggetto uno sparviero e un ciondolo a forma di chiave. La proposta più originale e irriverente è la collana con pendente a forma di testa dello Stregatto, nei nuovi colori proposti da Tim Burton: non più viola, bensì grigio con striature azzurre. La linea Flower Garden è dolcissima, con collana, orecchini e bracciali sui toni del viola e del lilla, con dei simpatici fiori che ridono. Ispirate al Cappellaio Matto, una collana e un braccialetto con bobine di filo e forbici. Per la Regina Rossa, una parure con cuori rosso brillante e gli altri simboli delle carte da gioco: gioielli molto eleganti e raffinati. For spring 2010 Swarovski has made a line of jewelry dedicated to Disney, and especially to Alice in Wonderland.
Swarovski has faithfully reproduced the necklace that Alice wears in the movie, that is a pendant with a hawk and a key. The most original and irreverent piece is a necklace with a pendant which represents the head of the Cheshire Cat with the new colors offered by Tim Burton: not purple, but gray with blue stripes. The line Flower Garden is very sweet, a purple and lilac necklace, earrings and bracelets, with some nice flowers that laugh. Inspired by the Mad Hatter, a necklace and a bracelet with coils of thread and scissors. For the Red Queen, a parure with bright red hearts and other symbols of playing cards: very elegant and refined jewelry. Stella McCartney, fashion designer inglese, ha realizzato una collana e un braccialetto in edizione limitata con charms in plexiglass, di colore marrone e nero, a forma di coniglio, del cilindro del Cappellaio Matto e dei simboli delle carte da gioco, impreziositi da perle e cristalli Swarovski. La scelta dei colori non è in linea nè con il film di Tim Burton nè con il cartone animato della Disney: troppo tristi per essere ispirati a una fiaba.
Il bracciale è venduto a $395 e la collana a $425.

La palette in edizione limitata Book of Shadows di Urban Decay, marchio di make-up americano, si apre come un libro pop-up: ecco che Alice e la foresta di funghi prendono vita.
Per creare il look Alice in Wonderland ci sono: 16 ombretti, 2 matite per gli occhi, una nera e una azzurra, e una confezione mini di Eyeshadow Primer Potion. Ogni ombretto porta nomi ispirati alla fiaba: Alice per l’azzurro, White Rabbit per il bianco, Mad Hatter per il marrone, Queen per il bordeaux e tanti altri, ma solo i nomi sono nuovi, perchè gli ombretti sono gli stessi della linea continuativa di Urban Decay.

Le pubblicità e i trailer hanno iniziato a martellarci dallo scorso anno, qualsiasi ragazza (o giovane donna) che ami ancora le favole è da allora in trapidazione e guarda con desiderio i numerosissimi gadget e le linee che i brand hanno dedicato a questo evento.
Di che cosa stiamo parlando? Del film dell’anno ovviamente, che per ogni ragazza kawaii che si rispetti non è “Avatar”, bensì “Alice in Wonderland” di Tim Burton.

The advertisings and the trailers have begun to bombard us since the last year, any girl (or young woman) who still loves fairy tales has been raring since that time and looks longingly the many gadgets and the lines that the brands have dedicated to this event.
What are we talking about? The movie of the year, of course, that for every self-respecting kawaii girl isn’t “Avatar”, but is “Alice in Wonderland” by Tim Burton.

Già dal 2008 Tim Burton rilasciava interviste che lasciavano ingolosire tutti i suoi fans e gli amanti di Alice:

“È un progetto divertente. La storia è ovviamente un classico con immagini, idee e pensieri iconici. Ma nonostante tutte le versioni del film, beh, non ne ho mai visto uno che abbia veramente avuto un impatto su di me. È sempre rappresentato solo come una serie di strani eventi. Ogni personaggio è strano e lei è solo come se vagasse da un incontro all’altro, come una sorta di osservatore. L’obiettivo è quello di tentare di farne un film avvincente, dove si evince psicologia dei personaggi, e di portare freschezza, mantenendo tuttavia la natura classica di ‘Alice’. E, si sa, realizzarlo in 3-D si addice abbastanza bene al soggetto. Così sono entusiasta di farne una nuova versione, ma anche di avere gli elementi che la gente si aspetta quando pensano al soggetto”.

Alla fine dopo la prima a Londra, il 25 Febbraio di quest’anno, finalmente sono trapelati i primi pareri e le prime review, lette avidamente da chi aspettava l’uscita nelle sale i primi di marzo.

Since 2008 Tim Burton has given interviews that make his fans and Alice’s lovers take a fancy:

“It’s a funny project. The story is obviously a classic with iconic images and ideas and thoughts. But with all the movie versions, well, I’ve just never seen one that really had any impact to me. It’s always just a series of weird events. Every character is strange and she’s just kind of wandering through all of the encounters as just a sort of observer. The goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of ‘Alice.’ And, you know, getting to do it in 3-D fits the material quite well. So I’m excited about making it a new version but also have the elements that people expect when they think of the material”.

Finally, after the première in London, on February 25, the first opinions and reviews were leaked, and were read avidly by those who waited for the release in the cinemas in early March.

Com’è questo Alice in Wonderland? / How is this Alice in Wonderland?

Sicuramente è diverso da qualsiasi cosa ci si aspettasse da Tim Burton, è un cocktail tratto dagli originali libri di Lewis Carroll, “Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie” e “Attraverso lo specchio e quel che Alice vi trovò”, come del resto lo è stato l’illustre predecessore della Disney datato 1951, dall’inconfondibile atmosfera surreale e gotica del visionario regista evidentemente influenzato dal tocco buonista della casa produttrice Walt Disney Pictures; infatti troviamo un’Alice con degli obiettivi, con un destino già tracciato, quindi non il solito protagonista burtoniano outsider e insicuro.
Aggiungiamo un tocco di psicadelia, una rivisitazione psicologica dei personaggi e un filone principale che segna la strada di Alice e il cocktail è pronto.

We didn’t expect this of Tim Burton, it is a cocktail with the characteristics of the original books written by Lewis Carroll, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass”, as indeed was the predecessor Disney movie released in 1951, with the unmistakable surreal and gothic atmosphere of the visionary director who is obviously influenced by the fine sentiments which mark the producer of the movie, the Walt Disney Pictures; in fact we find Alice who sets her targets, with a marked destiny, so she is not the usual Burton’s outsider and insecure protagonist.
To complete this cocktail we add a touch of psychedelia, a interesting psychological study of the characters and a main plot which marks the Alice’s destiny.

Trama / Plot

Alice ha 19 anni e, dopo la morte del padre, viene organizzata una festa a sorpresa con influenti personaggi della borghesia vittoriana. La sorpresa è tutta di Alice che scopre di essere la promessa sposa del “buon partito”, ma poco avvenente, Hamish Ascot.
Confusa e spaventata scappa e nei pressi del giardino, dove trova il Bianconiglio che correndo entra in un buco. Troppo curiosa per non sbirciare, si sporge e vi cade ruzzolando fino alla famosa anticamera dove su un tavolo trova un’ampolla con l’etichetta “Drink Me”, che la farà rimpicciolire e le permetterà di entrare nel Paese delle Meraviglie.
Qui sarà accolta come una salvatrice predestinata e, tra tanti incontri con i personaggi che hanno animato la nostra infanzia, si ritroverà ad affrontare la missione affidatale: affrontare in un combattimento la Regina Rossa e il suo esercito per liberare il Paese delle Meraviglie dalla tirannia.

After the death of her father, it was organized a surprise party for Alice, who is 19 year old, where influential people of the Victorian bourgeoisie were invited. But the real surprise for Alice is the discovery of her engagement with the “good match”, but not very handsome, Hamish Ascot.
Confused and scared she runs into the garden, where she sees the White Rabbit which comes into a hole. Too curious not to peek, she leans over and falls into the hole tumbling to the famous hall where on a table there is a phial labeled “Drink Me”, which will make her shrink and will let her enter in Wonderland.
There she is welcomed as a predestined savior and, after many encounters with the characters who enlivened our childhood, she faces the task assigned to: a fight against the Red Queen and her army, to free the Wonderland from the tyranny.

Questo film è un incanto per gli occhi di tutti gli amanti dello stile gotico e surreale, che desidereranno avere gli abiti dei protagonisti e vivere tra le magiche scenografie. La cosa che più mi è piaciuta sono state le architetture dei castelli delle regine: il castello della Regina Rossa con il tema delle carte da gioco di cuori, decorato con cuori, velluto rosso e fenicotteri, contrapposto a quello della Regina Bianca, che ha il tema degli scacchi bianchi, con siepi, balconate e statue a forma di testa di cavallo.
Quello che proprio non mi ha convinta e che mi ha molto delusa è stata la trama…

Il personaggio che mi ha stupito è stata la Regina Bianca: non era la regina buona e pura che mi sarei aspettata, ma una donna che sbatte gli occhi per avere ciò che desidera, che col sorriso crea pozioni a base di dita mozzate e che poi dice di non poter uccidere il drago Ciciarampa perchè, a detta sua, ha fatto un voto. Secondo me la Regina Bianca è più crudele e falsa della Regina Rossa.
Pollice in giù per il finale, a partire dal ballo assurdo del Cappellaio Matto e fino ad arrivare ad Alice in versione mercante che sale su una nave alla conquista della Cina.

This film is a pleasure to the eye of all the lovers of gothic and surreal style, who want to wear the clothes of the characters and live in that magical scenery. The thing that I liked the most was the architecture of the Queens’ castles: the Red Queen’s castle decorated with playing cards, hearts, red velvet and flamingos, as opposed to the White Queen’s one, on the theme of white chess pieces, hedges, balconies and horse’s head shaped statues.
What really have not convinced me and has disappointed me very much was the plot…

The character that surprised me the most was the White Queen: she isn’t the nice and pure Queen that I expected, but a woman who blinks to get what she wants, a woman that with a smile on her lips creates potions made of cut off fingers and then says that she can not kill the Jabberwock because she made a vow. In my opinion, the White Queen is crueler and falser than the Red Queen.
Thumb down to the ending, from the Mad Hatter’s absurd dance until Alice who becomes a merchant who wants to capture the Chinese market on her ship.

È un film che consiglio di vedere perchè Alice in Wonderland, con una vena grottesca e in alcuni punti macabra, rende bene l’inquietezza di Alice, scaraventata in un mondo bizzarro e all’inizio incomprensibile.
I paesaggi non rispecchiano quelli immaginati quando ero bambina, ma rappresentano bene un’idea adulta delle scenografie, maestose, poco rassicuranti e gotiche, da far perdere i punti di riferimento persino ad un adulto. Di certo sono davvero affascinanti e rappresentano più di un contorno a tutto il film, perchè “parlano e raccontano” già da sè.
I personaggi sono azzeccati e Alice, con occhiaie e vestito azzurro spiegazzato era perfetta.
Gli unici punti che ho ritenuto forzati riguardano proprio la trama, capisco che l’idea di dare uno scopo al viaggio della protagonista sia un legante tra i vari incontri, ma questo filone principale non mi ha convinta e mi è sembrato che non rispecchiasse bene nè lo stile di Tim Burton, nè quello Disney.

Mi è piaciuto invece moltissimo il riferimento al film di animazione della Disney, è come se questo film ne fosse il seguito, mettendo in scena la seconda visita di Alice a Wonderland.
Bocciato totalmente il finale dove Alice diventa una commerciante avventuriera marittima, davvero poco credibile. Perchè l’ex socio di suo padre dovrebbe ascoltare una ragazzina di 19 anni, che ha avuto un’idea banalissima e che ha piantato suo figlio sull’altare?

I recommend to watch Alice in Wonderland because, with a bit of grotesque and macabre atmosphere, communicates very well the Alice’s restlessness, thrown into a strange world and at the beginning incomprehensible.
The landscapes do not reflect those imagined when I was a child, but represent very well the adult idea of majestic, not reassuring and gothic scenographies, that make even adults lose their landmarks. They are definitely really fascinating and don’t represent a minor element in the whole movie, because “communicate and tell the story” by themselves.
The characters are apt and Alice, with rings under her eyes and a rumpled blue clothes is perfect.
The only forced point is the plot, I understand that the idea of giving a purpose to the journey of the main character links the different meetings, but the main plot doesn’t convince me and I think that it doesn’t reflect well nor the Tim Burton’s style, nor the Disney style.

I like very much the reference to the Disney animated movie, it’s as if this movie was its sequel, staging the second visit of Alice in Wonderland.
Totally rejected the ending where Alice becomes a marine merchant adventurer, absolutely not believable. Why would the associate of her father listen to a 19 year old girl, who had a banal idea and left his son?

Ivan Ricci (1980 - Roma, Italia) è un illustratore e designer di papertoy decisamente kawaii, sia di nome che di fatto. Dal 2004 infatti, in seguito alla creazione di una serie di character denominata “kawaii-style“, ne assume il nome come nickname. I suoi personaggi, carini e arrotondati, hanno uno sguardo felice e un sorriso perenne sulle labbra: orsetti, biscotti, cartucce per la stampante, valigette mediche e tanti altri. Con kawaii-style anche gli oggetti inanimati prendono vita e sorridono.
Alcuni suoi papertoy sono stati inseriti nel libro Papercraft della casa editrice tedesca Gestalten pubblicato nel settembre 2009 ed è di Ivan Ricci anche la cover di Computer Arts 135 del mese di novembre 2009.

Ivan Ricci (1980 - Rome, Italy) is a really kawaii illustrator and papertoy designer, in name and in deed. In fact, after designing a series of characters called “kawaii-style“, he have kept that name as a nickname since 2004. His cute and rounded characters, have a happy look and a perpetual smile on their lips: teddy bears, cookies, ink cartridges, medical bags and many others. With Kawaii-style even inanimate objects come to life and smile.
Some of his papertoys were inserted in the Book Papercraft edited by the German publisher Gestalten in September 2009 and Ivan Ricci illustrated also the November 2009 cover of Computer Arts 135.

Cos’è per te il kawaii?
1. Kawaii is not only a part of your name, but also a well-defined characteristic of your style of drawing.
What is kawaii for you?

Il kawaii è qualcosa che mi mette di buonumore. Trovo rasserenante circondarmi di personaggi kawaii e lo scopo delle mie creazioni è quello di diffondere questa sensazione di serenità e allegria anche agli altri.

Kawaii is something that puts me in a good mood. I find it comforting to surround myself with kawaii characters and the purpose of my creations is to spread this feeling of serenity and joy to others.

2. Tra i tuoi personaggi dolci e carini, spuntano anche delle corna ed elementi splatter.
È un modo per dare un tocco maschile a uno stile grafico che di solito è prettamente femminile?
2. Among your sweet and cute characters, we’ll find even horns and splatter elements.
Is a way to give a man’s touch to a graphic style that is usually strictly feminine?

Non so se sia questo il motivo, però so che mi piace realizzare lavori che possano piacere sia ad un pubblico femminile che maschile. In Giappone, ma anche in Corea e in Cina, il kawaii gode di un certo riscontro anche tra il pubblico maschile, mentre in Occidente la cosa è assai più circoscritta.
Devo dire però che i mie lavori al momento hanno riscosso consensi in egual modo da entrambe le parti. Per il discorso “corna e splatter”, mi piace creare personaggi un po’ dispettosi o a cui capitano cose spiacevoli… tanto poi guariscono tutti! :-)
Ad ogni modo, credo che il tocco maschile si veda anche nella scelta dei colori.

I’m not sure why, but I know that I like to create works that could please both female and male audience. In Japan but also in Korea and China, kawaii is well successful also for the male audience, while in the West it is much more circumscribed.
I have to say that at the time my works have been acclaimed equally by both audiences.
About “horns and splatter,” I like to create characters a bit naughty or that light upon something unpleasant… in the end everybody recovers! :-)
Anyway, I think that the male touch is also in the choice of colors.

3. I tuoi papertoy sono così carini che potrebbero trarre in inganno chi li guarda e indurli a pensare che non siano così difficili da realizzarle.
Invece, quanto studio progettuale c’è dietro ogni modello?
3. Your papertoy are so cute that could mislead who looks at them and making think that they are not so difficult to design.
How much planning study is there in each design?

Per creare un papertoy occorre tempo. In alcuni casi lo sviluppo è veloce, mentre in altri più lento; mediamente ci vogliono circa un paio di settimane di lavoro.
Comincio fissando le idee su un blocco da disegno poi, quando il risultato mi soddisfa, passo alla realizzazione del template in vettoriale. La maggior parte della lavorazione è spesso dedicata alla customizzazione, soprattutto quando mi diverto a realizzare più versioni utilizzando la stessa grafica di base.

It takes many time to create a papertoy. In some cases, the development is fast, while in others slower; on average it takes about a couple of weeks of work.
I begin by focusing the ideas on a sketchbook and then, when the result satisfies me, I begin to make the vector template. Most works are often dedicated to customization, especially when I enjoy creating different versions using the same graphical base.

4. Si dice che gli artisti abbiano sempre il desiderio di vedere le proprie opere in versione reale. Famosa è la leggenda secondo la quale Michelangelo colpì con un martello il ginocchio del Mosè chiedendo alla statua “Perchè nn parli?”.
Anche tu, con i tuoi papertoy, cerchi di dare in qualche modo vita ai tuoi personaggi?
4. It is said that the artists always desire to see their works in real version. It is famous the legend where Michelangelo struck with a hammer the knee of the Moses statue commanding “Now speak!”.
Even you, do you try to give life to your characters through your papertoys, somehow ?

Sì. Mi piace l’idea di poter creare un personaggio tridimensionale con il quale, magari, si può anche interagire. Poi la filosofia dei papertoy è meravigliosa! Mi rende felice sapere che tante persone sparse in tutto il mondo hanno un mio toy nella loro stanza.

Yes. I like the idea of creating a three dimensional character with whom, perhaps, you may also interact. Then the philosophy of papertoy is wonderful! It makes me happy to know that many people all over the world have one of my toy in their room.

5. La passione per i manga ti ha permesso di scoprire la tua strada nel mondo dell’illustrazione.
Quali sono i tuoi manga e anime preferiti? Ce n’è qualcuno in particolare che ti ispira per i tuoi lavori?
5. The passion for manga has allowed you to find your way in the world of illustration.
What are your favorite manga and anime? Is there someone in particular that inspires you for your work?

Per quanto riguarda i manga, Il mio autore preferito è Osamu Tezuka. Amo tutti i suoi lavori, in special modo Black Jack, La Storia dei Tre Adolf, Kirihito e MW. Di Black Jack poi c’è quella serie di splendidi OAV creata da Osamu Dezaki e Akio Sugino… una vera meraviglia per gli occhi!
Di fumetti in passato ne ho letti davvero molti e continuo a leggerli tuttora, sebbene in misura minore e non soltanto giapponesi.
Per quanto riguarda l’animazione, la mia serie preferita è Neon Genesis Evangelion. Mi piacciono i film di Miyazaki, Mononoke Hime sopra a tutti. Insomma, la lista sarebbe davvero lunga… per riassumere posso dirvi che generalmente leggo Shonen e Seinen.
Ad ogni modo, penso che il mio lavoro non venga direttamente ispirato da nessuno di questi titoli in particolare.

As for manga, my favorite author is Osamu Tezuka. I love all his works, especially Black Jack, Adolf, Kirihito Sanka and MW. Concerning Black Jack there’s the OAV series, beautifully created by Osamu Dezaki and Akio Sugino… marvellous!
In the past I have read quite a lot of comics and I still read them, although lesser and not only Japanese manga.
As for the animation, my favorite series is Neon Genesis Evangelion. I like Miyazaki’s movies, Mononoke Hime above all. In short, the list is really long… to sum up I can tell you that generally I read Shonen and Seinen.
Anyway, I think that my work isn’t directly inspired by any of these titles in particular.

6. Le tue illustrazioni hanno tinte sgargianti e piatte, senza alcuna sfumatura.
Che importanza ha il colore nella tua arte? C’è un colore che ti identifica in particolar modo?
6. Your illustrations have bright and flat colors, without any gradations.
How important is the color in your art? Is there a color that identifies you specifically?

Il colore è molto importante. Sono minimalista e quando realizzo qualcosa cerco di non abbondare con i colori, anzi di usarne il meno possibile. Posso dire che, bene o male, i colori mi piacciono tutti ma mi identifico in particolar modo con il ciano. Nei miei lavori, quando possibile, cerco di usare prevalentemente i colori primari. Un colore che “ho messo da parte” da tempo è il nero, specialmente nei lavori kawaii. Lo stesso discorso vale per le sfumature.

The color is very important. I’m minimal and while I’m creating something I try not to abound with colors, or rather, i try to use colors the least possible. I can say that, for better or worse, I like all the colors but I especially identify myself with the cyan. In my works, when possible, I try to use mostly primary colors. Black is a color that “I put aside” for a long time, especially in the kawaii works. The same goes for the gradations.

7. Alla linea “kawaii-style” si affianca la linea “murti” con grafiche che richiamano alle religioni orientali.
Come è nata questa serie di personaggi? Cosa ti affascina del folklore orientale?
7. The “kawaii-style” line comes abreast of “murti” line, with graphics that remind the Eastern religions.
How is this series of characters born? What fascinate you in the Eastern folklore?

Le Murti sono delle rappresentazioni fisiche di divinità indiane, quindi per questa serie di lavori l’ispirazione parte dall’Induismo e i suoi particolari dei e demoni. Poemi epici come il Ramayana e il Mahabharata sono tra le mie letture preferite. Forse sarò un po’ blasfemo (si tratta pur sempre di testi sacri!), ma devo dire che i combattimenti descritti nel Ramayana farebbero impallidire qualsiasi shonen, Dragon Ball compreso. Le potentissime divinità combattono i demoni lanciandogli contro missili di energia spirituali potentissimi, un qualcosa di molto simile ai colpi dei personaggi inventati da Toriyama. Oltre alle religioni mi interesso di leggende, festività, usi e costumi dei vari popoli orientali, e non solo. Il mio libro preferito è Lo Scimmiotto, conosciuto anche come Viaggio in Occidente.

The Murti are physical representations of Indian divinities, so this series of works is inspired by Hinduism and its particular divinities and demons. Epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata are some of my favorite readings. Maybe I’ll be a bit blasphemous (they are sacred texts), but I have to say that the fights described in the Ramayana are ahead of any shonen, Dragon Ball included. The powerful divinities fight against the demons by throwing missiles of powerful spiritual energy, something very similar to the strokes of the characters invented by Toriyama. In addition to the religions, I am interested in legends, festivals, costumes and traditions of various people in the East, and beyond. My favorite book is Journey to the West.

8. Graphic designer per lavoro e illustratore kawaii per diletto.
Speri che un giorno il tuo hobby diventi il tuo lavoro?
8. You are a graphic designer and a kawaii illustrator for hobby.
Do you hope that your hobby will become your job?

Sì. Spero di riuscire a trovare il modo per dedicarmi a tempo pieno alla linea kawaii-style, e alla realizzazione degli altri miei progetti.

Yes. I hope to find the way to dedicate myself full time to kawaii-style line, and to the realization of my other projects.

9. Come graphic designer, cosa pensi della qualità della pubblicità e delle grafiche italiane, che nonostante i numerosi giovani talenti, sono spesso meno creative, ironiche e originali rispetto a quelle straniere?
9. As a graphic designer, what do you think about the quality of Italian advertising and graphic, that despite the many young talents are often less creative, humorous and original than those abroad?

Vero, nel nostro paese è difficile potersi esprimere in modo particolarmente creativo e originale. All’estero si osa di più, ma si possono trovare bei lavori anche da noi. Il problema è che spesso il cliente non capisce che avere una buona immagine fa la differenza, e che per ottenere una buona immagine bisogna affidarsi a persone esperte investendo tempo e danaro.

It’s true, in our country is difficult to express ourselves in a particularly creative and original way. Abroad people dare more, but you can find nice works in Italy too. The problem is that the customer often does not understand that a good image makes a difference, and that to get a good image it is necessary to rely on experienced people investing time and money.

10. A cosa stai lavorando? Stai progettando una nuova serie di character?
Tra le tue grafiche abbiamo visto la tua collezione di t-shirt. Si possono già acquistare? Hai intenzione di ampliare la collezione?
10. What are you working on? Are you planning a new series of characters?
Among your graphics we’ve seen your collection of t-shirt. Is it already possible to buy them? Are you going to widen the collection?

Le idee sono tante ma il tempo per realizzarle non e mai sufficiente!
Attualmente sto lavorando ad un nuovo papertoy in collaborazione con l’amico Cartoontoys, a nuove illustrazioni kawaii, ad un importante aggiornamento per il mio sito internet e a tanti alti progetti. Quello che vorrei di più è che qualcosa si concretizzasse. Ad esempio le t-shirt a cui fate riferimento non sono ancora state prodotte.

The ideas are many but the time to make them is never enough!
I am currently working on a new papertoy in collaboration with my friend Cartoontoys, on new kawaii illustrations, on an important update of my website and on many other projects. What I want most is that something could be materialized. For example, the t-shirt to which you refer have not yet been produced.

Kawaii Contest: What’s in your bag?

È trascorso ormai più di un anno dall’apertura di questo blog e vorremmo ringraziare tutti voi per gli incoraggiamenti che ci date. È stupendo vedere che ci seguite e che apprezzate i contenuti che inseriamo.
È quindi l’occasione giusta per indire un nuovo piccolo concorso.

In un articolo il Kawaii Boyfriend disse “La probabilità di trovare al primo colpo il cellulare nella borsa = cometa di Hale-Bopp, avviene una volta ogni centinaia di anni”.
Abbiamo borse come quelle di Mary Poppins il cui contenuto, a volte, è un mistero anche per noi!
Ma… cosa c’è nelle borse delle kawaii girls?

CandyBird è un’illustratrice francese di 27 anni, lanciata nel 2008 grazie alla sua comparsa nell’artbook “Pink Attitude - The Contemporary Female Creativity”.
È un’artista che dipinge mondi misteriosi e femminili, dominati dalla grazia e da sguardi taglienti che rendono le protagoniste delle icone di purezza e dei miti inavvicinabili.
CandyBird con misura riesce a dosare il bianco e il nero con colori pastello, forme sinuose e arrotondate con tratti grezzi che si armonizzano perfettamente all’atmosfera kawaii.

CandyBird is a 27 year old French illustrator, launched in 2008 thanks to her appearance in the artbook “Pink Attitude - The Contemporary Female Creativity”.
She is an artist who paints mysterious and feminine worlds, dominated by grace and sharp eyes that make the protagonists icons of purity and unapproachable myths.

Per i miei disegni non utilizzo quasi altro che Photoshop, a volte faccio prima degli schizzi, ma spesso preferisco iniziare direttamente dalla tavoletta. Amo la spontaneità e la sorpresa che può sorgere da uno dei miei disegni.

For my drawings do not use almost nothing but Photoshop, sometimes I do first sketches, but often prefer to start directly from the tablet. I love the spontaneity and surprise that can arise from one of own drawings.

È sempre stata attratta dal disegno sin dalla più tenera età e nei suoi disegni trae ispirazione da fotografie, musica e stati d’animo anche se alcune volte si lascia trascinare dalle emozioni del momento, senza una precisa idea iniziale.

In her illustrations the sophisticated girls, who seem sometimes pin-ups and sometimes dolls, are often accompanied by sweet puppies:

The animals are often present in my work. I think they are silent assistants who watch over my pieces. I like to put sadness and melancholy in my drawings. My animals are there to bring the softness or to alleviate those which accompany them.

Anche i tatuaggi possono essere kawaii e fashion. Espressione di noi stessi o accessorio moda? Forma di ribellione o standardizzazione? La risposta è entrambi.
C’è chi ha dichiarato definitivamente sul proprio corpo ciò in cui crede e i marchi preferiti.

Ladybastard si è tatuata sul braccio sinistro tutti i suoi character preferiti tra cui Gloomy Bear, Momiji, Moofia e Hello Kitty. Ma proprio attraverso il tattoo si dichiara vegana con la scritta “Vegan Pride”. Rivisita invece in modo kawaii un classico evergreen dei tatuaggi: la scritta tra le rondini.

Ed ora che è finita l’era del tatuaggio “da marinaio” alla Jean Paul Gautier, il tattoo torna a far capolino nel mondo della moda con la maison francese Chanel. Durante la sfilata Prêt-à-porter primavera estate 2010, tenutasi al Grand Palais di Parigi il 6 Ottobre 2009, modelle abbigliate in stile country-chic hanno stupito il pubblico con i tattoo trasferibili Les Trompe L’œil creati da Peter Philips.

Giorgia Vecchini - Kasumi black version (Videogame: Dead or Alive 4)

Giorgia Vecchini, nome d’arte Giorgia Cosplay, è la più famosa cosplayer italiana, titolo che si è guadagnata per merito, grazie all’attenzione e alla cura che impiega per realizzare ogni nuovo personaggio, ma soprattutto grazie alla sua passione.
Leggendo sul sito la sua biografia, sembra proprio che il suo successo fosse stato preannunciato: un’attrazione fatale verso gli anime e i manga, anni di studio di recitazione (all’inizio influenzata da “Il Grande Sogno di Maya”), una mamma sarta-provetta e un papà falegname, se aggiungiamo che Giorgia è del segno della vergine (segno caratterizzato dalla puntigliosità), non poteva che diventare una cosplayer apprezzatissima.
Il suo primo cosplay è stato quello di Sailor Mars nel marzo del 1997, e di quella esperienza Giorgia scrive sul suo sito:

“Fu bellissimo; in fiera eravamo in quattro gatti a far cosplay - metà di cui Dragonball - mi faceva sentire straordinariamente bene, soprattutto le foto, i complimenti e gli sguardi increduli dei bambini… da quel momento in poi andare ad una fiera in abiti civili fu una vera sofferenza”.

Giorgia Vecchini, stage name Giorgia Cosplay, is the most famous Italian cosplayer, a title that she has earned according to merit, thanks to the attention and the care to create each new character, but mainly thanks to her passion.
In reading her biography on the website, it seems that her success was predicted: a fated attraction to anime and manga, her studying of acting (in the beginning influenced by “Glass Mask”), a mother that is able to seam very well and a father who is a carpenter, if we add that Georgia is the sign of Virgo (characterized by punctiliousness), she could only become a highly acclaimed cosplayer.
Her first cosplay was Sailor Mars in March 1997, and Giorgia writes on her website about that experience:

“It was beautiful, in the fair there were few cosplayers - half of them playing Dragonball - it made me feel incredibly good, especially the photos, the compliments and the unbelieving stares of the children… from that moment on, it was a real pain to go to a fair with civilian clothing”.

Nella gallery che troviamo sul suo sito possiamo apprezzare dei veri e propri servizi fotografici, senza alcun trucco, perchè le fotografie non vengono ritoccate, solo qualche piccolo intervento per bilanciare i colori.
Cosplay ma non solo, Giorgia si presta anche a servizi di modeling, ha scritto un libro in collaborazione con Alessandro Bottero intitolato “Fenomenal Cosplay” edito da Struwwelpeter, gestisce il suo sito interagendo con i suoi fan e il forum direttamente collegato e tutto questo part-time, perchè Giorgia, come la Wonder Woman che interpreta agli eventi e anche in uno spot benefico per Mantova Tv, lavora part-time con i bambini e incide canzoni eurobeat per il mercato giapponese per la casa discografica Gogo’s music.
Adesso vi presentiamo l’interessante intervista che con nostra grande gioia ha accettato di rilasciare per non solo Kawaii.

Cosplay but not only, Giorgia makes modeling features, has written a book in collaboration with Alessandro Bottero entitled “Phenomenal Cosplay” published by Struwwelpeter, manages her website, interacting with her fans, and her forum and she does all these activities part-time, because Georgia, like Wonder Woman whom she interprets during the events and also in a commercial in aid of charity for Mantova TV, works part-time with children and records eurobeat songs for the Japanese market for the label Gogo’s music.

1. Quali sono le caratteristiche per valutare un cosplay? Quanto credi influisca il fisico nelle valutazioni dei giudici e nel giudizio delle altre persone che non fanno cosplay?
1. What are the characteristics to value a cosplay? How do you think that the figure influences the assessment of the judges and the opinion of other cosplayers?

Una domanda impegnativa ;) … dunque per quanto mi concerne i miei parametri di giudizio sono i seguenti:

a) Phisique du rôle : se un ragazzo/a non c’entra palesemente nulla con il personaggio che sta interpretando, potrà avere anche un costume meraviglioso ma non sarà mai, a mio modo di vedere, un buon cosplay.
Questo non pregiudica la scelta, del resto non ci sono vincoli, ma ci si deve ovviamente aspettare un riscontro poco caloroso.
Esempio banale: una stangona di 1,80 m con il cosplay di Memole dolce Memole ^_^
b) Fattura complessiva di costumi e accessori; rifiniture, scelta dei materiali, fedeltà nella riproduzione.
c) Gestualità, mimica, insomma l’impersonificazione del personaggio.
d) Il dettaglio in più che fa la differenza, e questo fa la differenza tra un bel cosplay e un ottimo cosplay.

Per quanto riguarda l’aspetto fisico, piaccia o meno, come in ogni campo artistico ha la sua importanza, specie, come dicevo poco fa, nella giusta scelta di un personaggio.
Ma dato che il cosplay unisce tante altre “discipline”, si può supplire magari con una buona interpretazione e una gestualità convincente.

An hard question ;) … So as far as I’m concerned my parameters of judgement are as follows:

a) Physique du rôle: if a boy or a girl has blatantly nothing in common with the character that is playing, he/she can also have a wonderful costume but will never be a good cosplay in my view.
This does not affect the choice, anyway there are no constraints, but they have not to expect a warm response.
Trivial example: a 1.80 meter tall girl with the cosplay of Little Memole ^_^
b) Total making-up of costumes and accessories; finishing, material selection, fidelity in reproduction.
c) Gestures, facial expressions, in short, the embodiment of the character.
d) The extra detail makes the difference, and this makes the difference between a good cosplay and great cosplay.

Regarding the physical aspect, like it or not, as in every artistic field it is important, especially, as I said earlier, for the right choice of a character.
Since the cosplay joins many other “disciplines”, it’s possible to compensate for a good interpretation and convincing gestures.

2. Qual è il cosplay che hai fatto che ritieni meglio riuscito? Ce n’è stato invece uno in cui non ti sei ritrovata? E infine c’è un personaggio che ti piacerebbe impersonare, ma che per motivi “tecnici” o “strutturali” non potrai mai farne il cosplay?
2. What is the cosplay that you’ve done that you feel more successful? Instead was there one that didn’t satisfy you? And finally Is there a character that you would like to impersonate, but for “technical” or “structural” reasons you won’t never make it?

Mah probabilmente Sailor Pluto, non credo sia un caso se anche all’estero lo riconoscono come uno dei miei “cavalli di battaglia”, sia nella versione normale che eternal ho cercato di aderire il più possibile a immagini e illustrazioni in modo quasi maniacale, continuando nel tempo a migliorare piccoli dettagli.
Per questo difficilmente un mio cosplay è uguale a se stesso.
Se trovo qualche “pezzo” che ritengo migliore (lenti colorate, parrucche, etc.) io lo sostituisco continuamente fino ad avvicinarmi a quella che secondo me è la perfezione.
Con buona pace della mia carta di credito.

Un costume che mi ha lasciato insoddisfatta e che ho deciso di lasciare a se stesso è quello della gatta Felicia di Darkstalkers.
A dire il vero fu uno dei miei primi costumi e con le abilità attuali senza dubbio potrei fare di meglio, ma nel corso di questi anni l’ho visto realizzato così tante volte e così bene che non credo di avere null’altro da aggiungere, pertanto preferisco considerarlo un “retired”.

Mi pungete sul vivo.
Un personaggio che non potrò mai fare per evitare di risultare ridicola è, ironia della sorte, anche il mio cartone animato preferito, vale a dire Creamy.
Insomma guardiamoci in faccia, con una sedicenne pressochè piatta e tanto esile non ho proprio speranza alcuna ;)

Well probably Sailor Pluto, I do not think it’s a case that abroad it is recognized as one of my best costumes, both in the normal version and in the eternal, I tried to stick as possible to images and illustrations almost painstakingly, continuing always to improve small details.
For this reason my cosplays are never equal to theirselves.
If I find any “piece” which I consider better than the previous (colored lenses, wigs, etc.) I replace it continuously until I get close to what I think is the perfection.
Unluckily for my credit card.

A costume that doesn’t satisfy me and I decided to abandon is the Felicia of Darkstalkers‘ one.
Actually it was one of my first costume and with the current skills I have no doubt that I could do better, but during these years I’ve seen it so many times and it was made so well that I do not think they have something to give more, therefore I consider it a “retired”.

You hit me where it hurts.
A character who can never be done to avoid being ridiculous is, ironically, my favorite cartoon, which is Creamy.
Well in truth, I have no hope of emboding a thin 16 year old girl who is almost flat-chested ;)

3. Capita che tu debba fare il cosplay di un personaggio perchè ti viene chiesto, e se non hai il tempo per prepararti devi affidarti ai costumi che ti forniscono gli organizzatori. Come ti comporti in quel caso? Ti capita più spesso di interpretare cosplay di tua scelta o richiesti?
3. It happens that you have to make the cosplay of a character because it is asked, and if you do not have enought time to prepare it you have to wear a costume furnished by organizers. What do you do then? Do you more often interpret cosplay that you choose than required?

In linea di massima gli accordi avvengono per tempo, quindi riesco a realizzare il costume richiesto secondo il mio stile e le mie modalità.
Ad ora solo in due occasioni non ho potuto realizzare in prima persona l’abito in questione; nel primo caso come testimonial di “Vanja”, personaggio di un fumetto del fumettista napoletano Enzo Troiano, e in seconda battuta al recente Gran Cosplay Ball di Londra.
Durante l’esibizione con gli ospiti stranieri han deciso che ognuno di noi doveva interpretare un personaggio Disney e a me è stata assegnata la bella Megara di Hercules.
Solo che due settimane di preavviso non erano affatto sufficienti, per via soprattutto di impegni pregressi.
Così ci ha pensato l’organizzazione a fornirmene uno simile.
Oggettivamente preferisco lavorarci sopra io, prima perchè mi conosco e posso provarli su misura, secondo perchè mi ci sento più a mio agio e terzo perchè sono piuttosto perfezionista in quello che faccio e il pressapochismo non mi entusiasma.
Quanto alla scelta, effettivamente talvolta sono piuttosto vincolata; diciamo che attualmente il margine è un buon fifty fifty ^_^

Generally the agreements are made on time, so I can make the costume required according to my style and my ways.
So far only in two occasions I could not make personally the costume; in the first case as a testimonial of “Vanja”, a character made by the Neapolitan cartoonist Enzo Troiano, and secondarily at the recent Grand Cosplay Ball in London.
During the exhibition with foreign guests, they have decided that each of us would had to play a Disney character and I palyed the lovely Megara from Hercules.
Only two weeks for making the costume were not enough, especially because of the previous appointments.
So the organization provided a similar costume.
Objectively, I’d rather work on it in person, first of all because I know myself and I can make to measure, secondly I feel more comfortable and thirdly because I’m quite a perfectionist in everything I do and I don’t like the carelessness.
As for the choice, sometimes i’m quite constrained; I can say that currently it is a good fifty fifty ^_^

4. Prima di presentare un nuovo cosplay al pubblico, chi sono i tuoi primi “giudici”?

… mi piacerebbe dirvi che lo finisco in tempo utile per valutare eventuali problematiche, ma di solito la volta che riesco ad indossarlo tutto intero è esattamente il giorno stesso del debutto… quindi è una sorpresa anche per me vederlo tutto insieme ;)

… I’d like to tell you that I finish in time to assess possible problems, but I usually wear the whole costume exactly in the same day of the debut… so it’s a surprise for me to see it complete ;)

5. Fare cosplay è solo travestirsi o anche sentirsi come un determinato personaggio? In che percentuale si deve essere modelli e attori?
5. Is cosplay just dressing up or also feeling like a character? What is the percentage to be models and actors?

Il termine cosplay è una contrazione di “costume” e “player”.
Va da sé che entrambi i lemmi hanno ugual importanza nell’aspetto pratico, sia quello del costume vero e proprio, sia quello che concerne il comportamento e la performance.
Avendo alle spalle anni di teatro, personalmente sono nata prima come “player”, ovvero privilegiando l’aspetto interpretativo rispetto a quello costumistico, e solo nel corso degli anni ho sviluppato altrettanta attenzione per la parte sartoriale.
A mio avviso un buon cosplayer è colui che sa bilanciare perfettamente entrambi questi aspetti, anche se non è sempre facile.
Ci sono cosplayer validissimi dal punto di vista sartoriale, ma che per eccesso di timidezza o altro si limitano a posare per fotografie senza interpretazione di sorta, altri dal carattere molto esuberante che si calano senza esitare nei panni del personaggio scelto, a discapito magari di un costume non tecnicamente ineccepibile.
Determinante in questo senso la scelta che sta a monte del personaggio: il cosplay più riuscito è sempre quello che, secondo me, coniuga al meglio le capacità di ciascuno (sartoriali, modellistiche, recitative, etc.) e l’affinità non solo comportamentale ma anche fisica con il personaggio scelto.

Cosplay is a contraction of “costume” and “player”.
Both terms have the same importance in practice, whether the costume and the behavior and the performance.
I have acted for several years, personally I was born first as a “player”, favoring the interpretation than the costumes, and only over the years I have developed as much attention to the sewing part.
In my opinion a good cosplayer is who is able to perfectly balance both aspects, even if it is not always easy.
There are very able cosplayers from the point of view of tailoring, but because of the excessive shyness or other reasons, they merely pose for photographs without interpreting, on the contrary some others are very exuberant and play without hesitation the character chosen, perhaps to the detriment of a costume not technically flawless.
In this case the choice of the character to interpret is crucial: the most successful cosplayer is always who combines as much as possible the capabilities of each (tailoring, model building, acting, etc..) and the affinity, not only behavioral, but also physical with the character chosen.

6. Ti capita di partecipare anche ad eventi sparsi in tutto il globo, che differenze trovi rispetto all’Italia? Hai qualche curiosità da raccontarci?
6. You take part in events around the globe, what are the differences compared to Italy? Do you have any curiosity to tell us?

Le differenze variano da Paese a Paese.
Se in Francia, Germania e in Spagna possiamo dire che i nostri colleghi vivono il cosplay suppergiù allo stesso modo, ma senza raggiungere se non in casi isolati i picchi dei cosplayer italiani, in Mexico nel corso degli anni il miglioramento è stato esponenziale e tangibile.
Da loro “va di moda”, passatemi il termine, specie per le ragazze, avere un cosmaker, di solito il fidanzato, che realizza buona parte del costume e degli accessori ad esempio.
In Giappone non esiste il concetto di gara e più che cosplay è un cosphoto, e così via ^_^
Quanto agli aneddoti ne avrei tantissimi… ma lo spazio è tiranno… solo non dimenticherò mai l’emozione di aver ricevuto il premio al World Cosplay Summit in Giappone dalle mani del sensei Matsumoto (il papà di Capitan Harlock) mentre una delle giurate, cugina di Go Nagai, guardando il mio costume dell’arpia Silen – versione live - ha disegnato un manga con me come protagonista asserendo che era migliore il mio costume che quello del film realizzato in cg [ndr. computer graphics] *_*!

The differences vary from a country to another.
While in France, Germany and Spain, we can say that our colleagues see the cosplay pretty much in the same way, but without attaining the great results of Italian cosplayers, except in some isolated cases, in Mexico over the years, the improvement was exponential and tangible.
In that country it is “fashionable”, if you’ll permit me to use the term, especially for girls, to have a cosmaker, usually the boyfriend, who makes the great part of the costume and accessories, for example.
In Japan there is no concept of competition and more than a cosplay is a cosphoto, and so on ^_^
As for anecdotes, I would have lots… but the space isn’t enought … just i will never forget the thrill of receiving the prize at the World Cosplay Summit in Japan from the hands of Matsumoto sensei (the Captain Harlock’s father), while one among the jurywomen, Go Nagai’s cousin, looking at my costume of the harpy Silen - live version - drew a manga with me as the protagonist saying that my costume was better than that the one made for the film in cg [editor's note: computer graphics] *_*!

7. Are you involved in many activities, you are not only the most famous Italian cosplayer, but also a model, you manage your blog, your forum that is very popular and the events where you participate in “civilian clothing“. How can you coordinate everything?

Spesso me lo chiedo anch’io *_*, probabilmente per via del fatto che lavorando in maniera part-time riesco a conciliare le diverse esigenze (che mi portano via davvero una marea di tempo tra curare i contenuti sito, aggiornamenti fotografici, shooting, creazione costumi, pr, etc.)… o forse perchè ho la chiave d’accesso alla stanza del tempo di Dragonball… a voi la scelta ^_^

I often wonder to myself too *_*, probably it is due to the fact that I’m working part time so I can combine the different needs (which take me a lot of time for updating the site contens, photographic features, creating costumes, pr, etc.)… or maybe because I have the key to the time room of Dragonball… the choice is yours ^_^

8. Hai pubblicato il libro “Fenomenal Cosplay“. Ci racconti come è nato? È stato un progetto in cui sei stata coinvolta in tutte le fasi?
8. You have published the book “Fenomenal Cosplay“. Can you tell us how is born? Was a project where you have been involved in all phases?

La collaborazione con Alessandro Bottero, che ne è il curatore, è nata per caso durante una cena a Lanciano nel Fumetto, dove eravamo ambo ospiti.
Tra una chiacchiera e l’altra è uscita l’idea di pubblicare un libro a carattere fotografico circa i cosplayer italiani con un apparato semplice e pratico che potesse far avvicinare anche i neofiti.
Detto fatto, due settimane dopo eravamo già all’opera sulle bozze e prendevo accordi per gli shooting ;)
Ho chiamato a raccolta i cosplayer più bravi che conosco, anche se alcuni a causa del poco preavviso non han potuto presenziare, e con dei fotografi di tutto rispetto come Demis Albertacci e Bruno Sturman, nella splendida cornice del Parco Sigurtà (Valeggio Sul Mincio - Verona) abbiamo realizzato buona parte degli shooting presenti nel libro.
È stato un progetto molto interessante, anche se i tempi di realizzazione davvero stretti, e il risultato da onore e lustro alla bravura dei nostri cosplayer!

The collaboration with Alessandro Bottero, who is the editor, was born by chance during a dinner in Lanciano nel Fumetto, where we were both guests.
While we were having a chat, it came of publishing a photographic book about Italian cosplayers, a simple and practical way to introduce even the neophytes to cosplay.
Two weeks later we were already working on the proofs and making arrangements for photographic sessions ;)
I called the most talented cosplayers who I know, even if some of them couldn’t partecipate for the few notice, and we made the great part of the photos in the book, thanks to good photographers as Demis Albertacci and Bruno Sturman, in the splendid setting of the Sigurtà Park(Valeggio Sul Mincio - Verona).
It was a very interesting project, although the deadline for completing was really tight, and the result gives honor and prestige to the skill of our cosplayers!

9. Ci sono spesso molti pregiudizi verso che fa cosplay, specialmente in Italia, come affronti le critiche?
9. There are often many prejudices towards cosplayers, especially in Italy, how do you deal with criticism?

Non mi permetto di giudicare le passioni altrui, per quanto possa ritenerle quantomeno bizzarre, non vedo perché chicchessia dovrebbe permettersi di giudicare a priori qualcosa che non conosce bollandolo come una carnevalata o peggio.
È facile e comodo fermarsi alla superficie delle cose, ma come in ogni campo, basta davvero poco per capire che non è così.
Consiglio sempre a tutti di vederci all’opera, nel nostro ”ambiente naturale” durante le convention, per rendersi davvero conto di cosa siamo capaci e di quanto lavoro stia dietro tutti i nostri costumi.
Poi è vero anche che il livello dei costumi presenti ad una fiera può essere discontinuo, ma qui entriamo nel campo minato delle possibilità economiche di ciascuno, dell’esperienza e perché no, dello spirito con cui affrontare quest’hobby e del tempo da dedicarci.

I would not permit myself to judge the passions of others, as may be considered somewhat fanciful, I do not understand why anyone should afford to prejudge something that doesn’t know, branded as a clowning or worse.
It’s easy and convenient to stop at the surface of things, but as in any field, It doesn’t take much to understand that it is not so.
I always advise everyone to see us performing in our “natural environment” during the convention, to really understand what we are capable of and how much work is behind all our costumes.
Then it is true that the level of the costumes at the fairs can be discontinuous, but here we would talk about the economic possibilities of everyone, about the experience, and about the spirit with which a person deal with this hobby and about the time to dedicate to it.

10. Domanda sul futuro. Puoi darci qualche anticipazione sui tuoi progetti futuri?
10. Question about the future. Can you give us some anticipations about your future projects?

Progetti in vista ce ne sono diversi, per ora mi concentro sui miei prossimi appuntamenti esteri , dove sarò presente in qualità di ospite, a partire dal Portogallo il prossimo marzo, poi altre trasferte oltreoceano che stiamo definendo ^_^… quanto alla scelta dei prossimi costumi come al solito spazierò dai miei adorati anni ‘80, ai videogames, fino ai comics americani… insomma ce n’è un po’ per tutti i gusti ;)

There are a lot of future projects, for now I focus on my next appointments abroad, where I’ll be attending as a guest, from Portugal in March, then other overseas trips that we are defining ^_^… As to the choice of the next costumes as usual I will range from my beloved 80s, to videogames, up to the American comics… In short there’s a little something for everyone ;)

Il 9 febbraio 2010 il Kawaii Team ha avuto l’onore di essere invitato alla prima mondiale di “Hello Kitty the Show, musical di una favola moderna” presso il Teatro Nuovo di Milano, al quale ha presenziato anche l’amministratore delegato di Sanrio, Kunihiko Tsuji.

On February 9, 2010, the Kawaii Team had the honor of being invited to the world premiere of “Hello Kitty the Show, musical di una favola moderna” (Hello Kitty the Show, a musical of a modern tale) at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan, where also attended the CEO of Sanrio, Kunihiko Tsuji.

Un musical dedicato alle fan di Hello Kitty, grandi e piccine, e a tutta la famiglia.
Per capire quanto questa dolce gattina sia amata, basti pensare alla sfilata di vip italiani che hanno partecipato: Simona Ventura, Cristina Chiabotto, Jo Squillo, Belen Rodriguez, Maria Teresa Ruta, Susanna Messaggio, Daniele Massaro, Ana Laura Ribas e Ludmilla Radchenko.
Alla comparsa di Hello Kitty sul palcoscenico c’è stata un’ovazione generale del pubblico.
Tutti non vedevano l’ora di scoprire come sarebbe stata rappresentata. La gattina di Sanrio era una ragazza travestita in modo kawaii: una graziosa testa in peluche con il nasino che si illuminava e diversi outfit in stile principesco che rendevano l’insieme armonioso e proporzionato. Hello Kitty non era un pupazzo coccolone, bensì una gattina aggraziata, una specie di fatina che aiuta le ragazze a realizzare i propri sogni.

A musical dedicated to Hello Kitty fans, children and adults, and the whole family.
To understand how this sweet little kitten is loved, just consider the many italian celebrities who participated: Simona Ventura, Cristina Chiabotto, Jo Squillo, Belen Rodriguez, Maria Teresa Ruta, Susanna Messaggio, Daniele Massaro, Ana Laura Ribas and Ludmilla Radchenko.
When Hello Kitty walked on stage there was general applause.
All looked forward to find out how she would have been represented. The Sanrio kitten was a girl with very kawaii dresses: a nice plush head with the nose that lights up and different princess style costumes, that makes the whole harmonious and proportionate. Hello Kitty was not a cuddly plush, but a graceful kitten, a kind of fairy who helps the girls to make their dreams come true.

Il musical, 1 ora e 50 minuti di spettacolo interamente made in Italy, è stato prodotto da Poltronissima in collaborazione con Mas, Music Arts & Show.
Nello spettacolo spiccano le moderne coreografie di ballo, composte da 25 ballerini, tutti giovanissimi, e le musiche pop rock, cantate dal vivo su basi registrate, alcune in lingua italiana e altre in inglese, così orecchiabili che, finito lo spettacolo, le persone già le canticchiavano.

The musical, 1 hour and 50 minutes of a show entirely made in Italy, was produced by Poltronissima in collaboration with Mas, Music & Arts Show.
In the show stand out the choreography of modern dance, performed by young 25 dancers, rock and pop music, sung live on recorded track, some in Italian and others in English, so catchy that after the show, people were already humming.

Un plauso anche ai costumi, che andavano da moderni kimono fucsia con parrucche ricce biondo platino, a completi minimal bianco-neri con berretti a forma di caschetto alla Coco Chanel, fino a surreali tutine aderenti nere e rosa con le teste di Hello Kitty.

A praise also to the costumes, ranging from modern kimono with pink curly platinum blonde wig, to minimal black and white suits and tailleur with helmet shaped hats which remind Coco Chanel, and to surreal black and pink leotards with giant Hello Kitty heads.

La Trama / The Plot

Tre giovani ragazze hanno un sogno nella vita che vorrebbero realizzare: Mia vorrebbe diventare una rockstar, Sally una ballerina e Tania una pittrice. I loro destini si uniscono quando decidono di partecipare al concorso indetto dalla Fabbrica dei Sogni per diventare le Kitty Girls, ma la strada per coronare il loro sogno si mostrerà irta di difficoltà.
Si troveranno ad affrontare Sergej, il capo dei capi, nonchè stilista di Minimaltropolis, una città grigia e stereotipata dove il trend è lo stile minimal nero-bianco-grigio e dove sono banditi i colori. Appena Sergej vedrà Mia, Sally e Tania, esclamerà spaventato “Cosa vedono i miei occhi? Dei Cromi!”. Le tre ragazze infatti sono diverse da tutti gli altri abitanti: sono colorate e si esprimono con il loro look e le loro arti.
Ma lungo il cammino di Mia, Sally e Tania ci sarà anche chi cercherà di aiutarle, come Luis, guardiano di Minimaltropolis, Chira, segretaria di Sergej e… la mitica Hello Kitty!
L’happy end è assicurato.

Three young girls have a dream that they would like to make come true: Mia would like to be a rock star, Sally a dancer and Tania a painter. Their fates are joined when they decide to enter the contest announced by the Dream Factory to choose the three Kitty Girls, but the way to crown their dream will be full of difficulties.
They will have to face Sergej, the leader of leaders and the designer of Minimaltropolis, a gray and stereotypes city where the trend is minimal black-white-gray and where the colours are banned. When Sergej sees Mia, Sally and Tania, frightened exclaims “What do I see? Some colours”. In fact the three girls are different from everyone else: they are colorful and express themselves with their look and their arts.
But in this situation Mia, Sally and Tania will be helped by Luis, Minimaltropolis guardian, by Chira, the Sergej’s secretary and… the mythical Hello Kitty!
The happy ending is assured.

Le risposte potrebbero essere molteplici: c’è chi direbbe “l’uomo perfetto”, chi direbbe un dolce… qui abbiamo raccolto alcuni spunti.

Nel precendente articolo Japanese Drops: Kimono abbiamo trattato le caratteristiche, i tipi e gli accessori dei kimono, abiti dotati di grande fascino e bellezza, sia per i decori delle stoffe, che per le movenze che permettono a chi li indossa. Portare un kimono non è semplice e indossarlo da sole è complicato, visto l’elevato numero delle parti che lo compongono e la difficoltà nell’annodare l’obi dietro la schiena.
Il Kawaii Team ha assistito dal vivo alla vestizione del kimono: un evento affascinante, soprattutto per noi occidentali che non siamo abituati ad abiti così formali e complessi, composti da numerosi strati e che possono necessitare di aiuto per indossarli.
Secondo la tradizione, l’arte della vestizione del kimono veniva tramandata da madre a figlia. Oggi ci sono scuole che insegnano come indossarlo. E anche il Kawaii Team cercherà di tramandarlo a sua volta.

In the previous article Japanese Drops: Kimono we talked about the characteristics, types and accessories of kimono, piece of clothing with great charm and beauty, both for the decoration of the fabric, and for the movements that are made by the person who wear it.
