Ispirate da questa collezione, abbiamo immaginato una ragazza mentre aspetta il cavaliere che l’accompagnerà ad un ballo in maschera, lasciandosi accarezzare dalla brezza primaverile.

Alessia Iannetti è un’artista italiana, di Carrara, che ha recentemente tenuto la sua prima mostra personale, Daphne Descends, alla Dorothy Circus Gallery di Roma.
Lo stile di Alessia si può ricondurre alle correnti Neo Surrealista e Neo Pop, le sue opere mettono a nudo la sua interiorità e la sua visione onirica del mondo, sospesa in un luogo senza tempo dove ammiriamo bambine e adolescenti che popolano boschi e foreste, nascondendosi e proteggendosi, facendoci quasi sentire il fruscio delle foglie e l’odore della natura in un’atmosfera che ci seduce e ci turba allo stesso tempo.

Alessia Iannetti is an Italian artist, who recently held her first solo exhibition, Daphne Descends, at the Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome.
Alessia’s style is connected to Neo Surrealism and Neo Pop movements, her works show her inner self and her dream vision of the world, suspended in a timeless place where we admire little girls and adolescents that inhabit the woods and the forests, hiding and protecting themselves, making almost hear the rustle of the leaves and smell of nature in an atmosphere that seduces and disturbs us at the same time.

1. Da cosa scaturisce il nome scelto per la tua prima mostra personale, “Daphne Descends”?
1. Where does the name of your first solo exhibition, “Daphne Descends”, come from?

“Daphne Descends” è il titolo di un brano degli Smashing Pumpkins tratto da “Adore”, il loro quarto album che uscì nel 1998 quando avevo 12 anni. Ho deciso di intitolare così la mia prima mostra personale come tributo a uno dei miei gruppi preferiti e alla mia adolescenza.
Il ciclo di opere “Daphne Descends” si ispira al mito di Apollo e Dafne e raffigura alcune ninfe e bambine evanescenti, “in fuga” verso un universo naturale e fantastico. I loro corpi di porcellana si riavvicinano all’umano al tocco di fragili insetti che risanano le fratture sugli incarnati diafani. La metamorfosi è l’unica possibilità di evasione e sopravvivenza. I loro sguardi svaniscono celandosi tra le foglie, mentre rampicanti intricati nascondono e proteggono i loro corpi che si fondono con il bosco selvaggio. Le braccia si irrigidiscono, le dita delle mani si allungano fino a diventare rami, i piedi si deformano in radici che si ancorano al terreno, ma, sotto ai petti di corteccia, i loro cuori continuano a battere e a bruciare. Ancora vivi e in salvo.

“Daphne Descends” is the title of a song by Smashing Pumpkins from “Adore”, their fourth album which was released in 1998 when I was 12 years old. So I decided to name my first exhibition as a tribute to one of my favorite bands and to my adolescence.
The series of “Daphne Descends” works is inspired by the myth of Apollo and Daphne depicting evanescent nymphs and girls, “on the run” to a natural and fabulous world. Their bodies, made of porcelain, become closer to human skin at the touch of fragile insects that heal the fractures on their diaphanous complexions. Metamorphosis is the only chance of escape and survival. Their gazes disappear hiding among the leaves, while matted climbing plants hide and protect their bodies that merge with the wild forest. The arms stiffen, the fingers become branches, the feet are deformed in roots anchored to the ground, but, under the cortex breasts, their hearts keep beating and burning. Still alive and safe.

2. Da dove trai ispirazione per le tue opere e qual è il processo creativo che ti porta a realizzarle?
2. What are your inspirations and what is your creative process?

La musica, i libri, i film e le immagini alimentano la mia fantasia, ispirano sentimenti ed emozioni, disseppelliscono ricordi passati o recenti che si trasformano in quadri.
Certe volte a ispirarmi è un soggetto, un viso particolare, altre volte la musica, il testo di una canzone, un immagine, un ricordo. Credo di essere “guidata” da un forte sentimento di malinconia che mi spinge a fissare nella mia arte gli attimi che svaniscono, come i fatti della mia storia personale che vengono filtrati dalla mia immaginazione, per poi apparire nelle mie opere sotto forma di simboli. Le idee nascono nella mia mente come vere e proprie visioni che spesso abbozzo sulla carta in modo molto stilizzato. Quando trovo un soggetto adatto a rappresentare i personaggi e le scene che ho immaginato lo inserisco all’interno di un ambiente e realizzo molti scatti, per poi scegliere, alla fine, quelli che più si avvicinano a quella che era la mia visione iniziale.
Quasi tutti i miei lavori nascono dalla riproduzione di questi soggetti reali attraverso il disegno che si stravolge piano piano per mezzo dell’introduzione di elementi fantastici all’interno della composizione.

Music, books, movies and pictures feed my imagination, inspire feelings and emotions, dig up past or recent memories that turn into paintings.
Sometimes I’m inspired by a person, a distinctive face, other times by the music, the text of a song, an image, a memory. I believe to be “guided” by a strong feeling of melancholy that makes me catch in my art the moments that fade away, as the facts of my personal story that are filtered by my imagination, to appear in my works as symbols. Ideas come into my mind as visions that I often sketch on paper. When I find the right topic to represent the characters and the scenes that I have imagined, I insert it inside an environment and I take some photos, then I choose those which are closest to my original vision.
Almost all of my works come from the representation of these real pictures through the drawing, which is slowly twisted through imaginary elements added in the composition.

3. Ci sono degli elementi che ti affascinavano da piccola e che adesso ti ispirano nella creazione delle tue opere?
3. Are there any elements that fascinated you as a child and that inspire you now in your works?

Tutte le mie opere si riconnettono in un modo o nell’altro alla mia infanzia, al particolare modo che avevo di guardare il mondo, con un misto stupore, meraviglia e inquietudine. Era come se il mio sguardo fosse filtrato da una lente d’ingrandimento magica che mi permetteva di perdermi nei dettagli della realtà, ma anche di deformarli. Mentre giocavo, rimanevo spesso incantata da alcuni elementi naturali e dai loro dettagli: le nervature delle foglie e dei petali dei fiori, la trama ripetitiva delle cortecce dei pini, i motivi sulle ali e sui corpi degli insetti, il piumaggio degli uccelli che osservavo vivi o che trovavo morti, o semplicemente il profumo e la consistenza della terra. Tutti questi elementi sono rimasti impressi nella mia mente e mi sembra ancora di poterne percepire gli odori e le sensazioni. Durante l’infanzia, ho sviluppato una vera e propria ossessione per il lato misterioso e oscuro della realtà, rimanevo sempre molto impressionata dai dettagli inquietanti delle favole e crescendo ho ricercato quel lato nella letteratura e nel cinema. La paura era un elemento che mi faceva fuggire, ma che mi attraeva allo stesso tempo. La ricerca del lato oscuro che c’è in tutte le cose si riflette nella mia arte in quell’elemento inquietante che caratterizza ogni opera, anche la più luminosa.

All my works are reconnected in one way or another to my childhood, to the peculiar way I used to look at the world, with a mixture of amazement, wonder and restlessness. My eyes were like filtered through a magnifying magic glass that makes me lose in the detalis of reality, but also deform them. While I was playing, I often got enchanted by some natural elements and their details: the nervatures of the leaves and of the petals, the repetitive texture of the bark of pines, the patterns of insect wings and bodies, the plumage of the birds that I watched alive or I found dead, or just the scent and the texture of the earth. All these elements were imprinted in my memory and I can still perceive smells and sensations.
During childhood, I developed a real obsession with the dark and mysterious side of reality, I was always very impressed by the disturbing details of fairy tales and growing up I looked for that side in literature and cinema. The fear was something that made me run away, but I felt myself drawn to it at the same time. The research of the dark side that is in all things is reflected in my art in that disturbing element that characterizes each work, also the brightest one.

4. Come si inserisce la musica nel tuo processo creativo? Quali canzoni inseriresti in una playlist ideale?
4. Where is the music in your creative process? What is your perfect playlist?

La musica è la mia più grande ossessione ed è anche la colonna sonora del mio processo creativo. Non inizio mai a lavorare senza prima aver scelto qualcosa da ascoltare che sia adatto per dipingere, qualcosa che riesca a far fluire le idee, a ispirarmi e che, allo stesso tempo, riesca a mantenermi concentrata sul mio lavoro.

Music is my biggest obsession and it is also the soundtrack of my creative process.
I don’t ever start to work without first choosing something to listen to that it is suitable for painting, something that makes the ideas flow, that inspires me and that, at the same time, makes me focus on my work.

5. In Daphne Descends molte opere sono realizzate su legno, perché hai deciso di utilizzare questo tipo di supporto?
5. In Daphne Descends many works are painted on wood, why did you choose this kind of material?

Ho scoperto l’utilizzo del legno come supporto per lavorare frequentando le lezioni di Omar Galliani in Accademia. Sono rimasta affascinata da questo tipo di materiale e ho capito che sarebbe stato l’elemento adatto a rappresentare i miei soggetti. I miei mezzi sono stati da sempre matita, penna e carta, mezzi istintivi, immediati, che non necessitano di alcun tipo di preparazione e il legno mi consente lo stesso tipo di approccio immediato alla mia opera. Il legno è un supporto solido, “vivo” e interessante dal punto di vista materico per le sue caratteristiche venature e i suoi nodi che lo rendono una texture naturale, molto particolare, su cui iniziare a lavorare. Inoltre, in questo caso, il legno si sposava perfettamente con il tema della mia mostra.

I found wood as base for my work attending Omar Galliani’s classes at the Academy. I was fascinated by this kind of material and I realized that it would be perfect to represent my art. My tools have always been pencil, pen and paper, instinctive, immediate, which do not require any kind of expertise and wood gives me the same type of immediate approach to my work. Wood is a solid material, “alive” and interesting from the tactile point of view for its grain and its knobs that make it a natural texture, very peculiar, on which to start working. Moreover, in this case, the wood goes perfectly with the theme of my exhibition.

6. Le tue modelle sono adolescenti o bambine. C’è un significato particolare dietro questa scelta?
6. Your models are teenagers or children. Is there a reason for this choice?

Le mie modelle si muovono in un non-luogo che non è soggetto allo scorrere del tempo, cristallizzate nelle età di infanzia e adolescenza, i periodi più affascinanti della vita, caratterizzati da sentimenti puri, istintivi, forti e spesso contrastanti. In questi periodi è concesso sognare e soffermarsi a indagare la propria interiorità, esplorando le mutazioni che l’anima subisce nella sua crisalide in divenire, nel passaggio dall’infanzia all’età adulta. I miei personaggi sono esseri in fuga dai rintocchi di quell’orologio che potrebbe condurli alla trasformazione del corpo e del cuore, a quella crescita che potrebbe privarli per sempre delle chiavi d’accesso ai regni segreti, conducendoli ad una disconnessione con la loro natura fantasiosa.

My models are in a place where the time is still, they are crystallized in the age of childhood and adolescence, the most fascinating moments of the life, characterized by pure, instinctive, strong and often conflicting feelings. In these spans of time we are allowed to dream and to stop investigating their inner self, exploring the mutations of the soul in its chrysalis in the becoming, in the transition from childhood to adulthood. My characters are beings fleeing by the strokes of that clock that could lead them to the transformation of the body and the heart, to that growth that could deprive them forever of the keys to the secret lands, leading a disconnection with their imaginative nature.

7. In alcune opere vediamo il cuore delle protagoniste portato all’esterno del petto, cosa ti affascina di questo soggetto ricorrente?
7. In some works we can see the heart of the protagonists out of the chest, what fascinates you about this theme?

Sono sempre stata attratta dall’anatomia del cuore umano e dal cuore in qualità di simbolo dal grande fascino estetico e dal forte potere evocativo. Il cuore è l’unico organo di cui percepiamo costantemente la presenza, svolge una funzione meccanica ed è coinvolto in tutte le modifiche fisiologiche connesse al manifestarsi delle emozioni. Per gli antichi il cuore era la sede dell’anima ed è divenuto un simbolo di spiritualità. Il cuore che rappresento nelle mie opere è una sorta di versione anatomica del cuore sacro dei miei personaggi.

I’ve always been attracted to the anatomy of the human heart and to the heart itself as a symbol with a great aesthetic appeal and evocative power. The heart is the only organ whose we perceive the constant presence, it carries out a mechanical function and it is involved in all the physiological changes related to the emotions. For the ancients, the heart was the place of the soul and it has become a symbol of spirituality. The heart represented in my work is a kind of anatomical version of the sacred heart of my characters.

8. Le tue opere spesso dipingono delle adolescenti nella natura. Sei più interessata all’interazione tra natura ed essere umano o vuoi comunicare anche un messaggio ecologista?
8. Your works often represent adolescent girls in the nature. Are you more interested in the interaction between nature and human being or do you want to to communicate an environmental message?

Nelle mie opere, la natura è semplicemente la rappresentazione di un mondo fantastico, la materializzazione del mio paesaggio interiore. La natura, il bosco, rappresentano per me l’inconscio. In quel luogo selvaggio, istintivo e disinibito i miei personaggi archetipi si muovono e si nascondono. Se le mie opere siano in grado o no di suscitare anche una sorta di sensibilizzazione ecologista non lo so, ma lo spero davvero.

In my work, nature is simply a representation of a fantasy world, the materialization of my inner landscape. The nature, the woods represent the unconscious to me. In that wild, instinctive and uninhibited place my archetype characters move and hide. I don’t know if my works can arouse a kind of ecological awareness, but I really hope so.

9. Nelle tue opere per te è più importante comunicare te stessa, le tue emozioni e i tuoi valori oppure creare un immaginario che susciti emozioni all’osservatore? Disegni per te stessa o per comunicare con gli altri?
Qual è il complimento più bello che ti è stato fatto come artista?
9. In your work is it more important to you to communicate yourself, your emotions and your values, or to create an imaginary that arouses emotions in the observer? Do you draw for yourself or to communicate with the others?
What is the best compliment you’ve got as an artist?

Da piccola, passavo molto tempo a giocare da sola nel giardino della casa dei miei nonni, è stato un momento prezioso in cui vivevo completamente immersa nella mia fantasia, distaccata dal mondo e libera, c’eravamo solamente io, il mio mondo interiore, e i personaggi che inventavo di cui mi piaceva immaginare ogni singolo dettaglio. È lo stesso tipo di sentimento che sento quando lavoro sulle mie opere, una sorta di libertà, un distacco da tutto, e a volte credo che quello che faccio con la mia arte sia cercare di rievocare quel tipo di sentimento. Disegnare per me è un istinto, un’urgenza personale, è il mio modo di dare vita a sentimenti, ricordi e visioni. Il desiderio di comunicare arriva in un secondo momento, quando il disegno è terminato e non sono più coinvolta in quel processo di trasformazione. Se, alla fine, riesco veramente a rileggere le mie esperienze all’interno dell’opera, allora mi viene voglia di condividerla.
Una volta, mi è capitato che un osservatore riuscisse a intuire i miei gusti musicali dalla visione delle mie opere. Quello è stato un bellissimo complimento.

When I was a child, I spent a lot of time playing alone in the garden of my grandparents, it was a precious moment in which I lived completely immersed in my imagination, detached from the world and free, there was only me, my inner world, and the characters that I used to invent and whose I liked to imagine every single detail. It’s the same kind of feeling when I work on my paintings, a kind of freedom, a detachment from everything, and sometimes I think that what I do with my art is to try to evoke that kind of feeling. Drawing for me is an instinct, an inner urgency, it’s my way to give rise to feelings, memories and visions. The desire to communicate comes later, when the drawing is finished and I’m no longer involved in the process of transformation. In the end if I can really see my experiences within the work, then I want to share it.
Once an observer was able to guess my musical tastes watching my works. That was a nice compliment.

10. Domanda sul futuro: a quali progetti stai lavorando e quali sono i tuoi sogni nel cassetto?
10. What projects are you working on and what are your dreams?

Attualmente sto lavorando a una serie di mostre collettive organizzate dalla Dorothy Circus Gallery. La prima mostra si terrà a giugno al MACRO di Roma, la seconda, “Lacrima Aquarium”, si terrà a Dicembre presso La Casa dell’Architettura-Acquario Romano; quest’ultima sarà la terza edizione della mostra itinerante “Pop Surrealism” e comprenderà i nomi più importanti della corrente Pop Surrealista mondiale.
Uno dei miei sogni nel cassetto è sempre stato quello di illustrare le copertine degli album dei miei musicisti preferiti…

I am currently working on a series of exhibitions organized by Dorothy Circus Gallery. The first exhibition will be held in June at MACRO in Rome, the second, “Lacrima Aquarium”, will be held in December at La Casa dell’Architettura-Acquario Romano; the latter will be the third edition of the traveling exhibition “Pop Surrealism” and it will include the most important artists in the world of the Pop Surrealist movement.
One of my dreams has always been to illustrate the album covers of my favorite musicians…

Undici ritratti di animali realizzati dall’artista pop surrealista Marion Peck.
La mostra intitolata Animals ha raccolto, dal 30 marzo al 27 aprile 2013 presso la Michael Kohn Projects di Los Angeles, le ultime opere di questa straordinaria artista che, insieme al marito Mark Ryden, è una dei pilastri di questa corrente artistica.

Eleven animal portraits painted by the pop surrealist artist Marion Peck.
Animals is the name of the exhibition, opened from March 30 to April 27 2013 at Michael Kohn Projects in Los Angeles, that collected the last works of this extraordinary artist who is one of the main exponents of this artistic movement, together with her husband Mark Ryden.

Difficile capire se si trattino veramente di animali, perchè di animalesco i protagonisti hanno solo le fattezze. I loro occhi esprimono sentimenti e parlano direttamente al nostro cuore: tristezza, tenerezza, solitudine. Alcuni ricordano gli uomini anche nelle pose, come il gattino bianco a letto malato, il cervo in piedi su due zampe o il topo, perfettamente vestito da clochard.

It’s hard to understand if they are really animals, because their eyes express feelings and speak from the heart: sadness, tenderness, loneliness. Some of them remind of men even in the pose, such as the white kitten sick in bed, a deer standing on two legs or a mouse dressed like a tramp.

L’attenzione per gli sfondi e la composizione della flora sono chiaramente ispirate al Rinascimento fiammingo.
Il nostro sguardo, dopo aver fissato a lungo gli intensi occhi del protagonista, si posa sullo sfondo viaggiando tra le verdi vallate.

The backgrounds and the composition of the flora are inspired by the Flemish Renaissance.
After watching the deep eyes of the protagonist, we admire the background and we are lost between the green valleys.

Il 22 Aprile è la Giornata della Terra, un’occasione molto importante che serve per ricordarci quando sia prezioso l’ambiente che ci circonda, per non dare per scontate le bellezze naturali perchè, tutti i nostri piccoli gesti, ogni giorno, hanno un peso, un impatto, e siamo noi a decidere in che direzione muoverci.
Già in passato abbiamo presentato degli articoli a tema, 50 Modi per Salvare il Pianeta, Earth Day and Fashion Recycling e Earth Day and Inspirations, oggi vogliamo mostrare la bellezza della natura in un modo diverso, la natura indossata.

Cleric surprises us again, this time with handmade new romantic bags in faux leather and lace, framed by a chain.
Clutches are made in two versions: bon ton in white macramé lace and glamorous in beige-brown faux leather with baroque carvings and with Swarovski crystals to go out at night.

Lo scorso 13 aprile sono state inaugurate due mostre alla Corey Helford Gallery: “Japanese Ideology of Puberty” di Kazuki Takamatsu, ospitata proprio nella galleria, e “New and Rare Works” di Ray Caesar nello spazio CHG Circa.

Two exhibitions were opened at the Corey Helford Gallery on April 13: “Japanese Ideology of Puberty” by Kazuki Takamatsu, housed in the gallery, and “New and Rare Works” by Ray Caesar at CHG Circa.

Le opere di Kazuki Takamatsu colpiscono per la loro originalità, sono realizzate in acrilico e gouache, sfruttando la tecnica digitale del “Depth Mapping”, dove le figure vengono suddivise e colorate secondo livelli di profondità.

Kazuki Takamatsu’s artworks impress for their originality, they are painted in acrylic and gouache, using the digital technique of “Depth Mapping”, where the figures are divided into layers and colored according to their depth.

“Ogni gradazione, dallo strato più superficiale a quello più profondo, rappresenta la distanza e non ci sono luci e ombre. I colori bianco e nero sono la metafora della verità e del male, di razza e di religione”.

“Each graduation from surface to depth means the distance and there is no light and shadow. The color of black and white are metaphor for truth and evil, race and religion.”

La mostra “Japanese Ideology of Puberty” è un viaggio nella trasformazione degli adolescenti verso l’età adulta, dove le loro emozioni vengono proiettate metaforicamente nell’ambiente che li circonda.
I titoli delle opere sembrano delle poesie ermetiche, fanno riflettere sul significato che l’artista vuole comunicare e forse sul significato che cerchiamo dentro di noi.

“Japanese Ideology of Puberty” is a journey through the transition from adolescence to adulthood, where their emotions are projected metaphorically in the environment that surrounds them.
The titles of the artworks seem hermetic poems, they make us reflect on the meaning that the artist wants to communicate and perhaps on the meaning we seek within us.

“New and Rare Works” di Ray Caesar, è una mostra che ripercorre dieci anni di carriera di uno dei massimi esponenti del Pop Surrealismo, ospitando anche alcune nuove opere.
Sicuramente è un’occasione unica, per chi avesse la fortuna di passare per Culver City in California, di ammirare le meravigliose opere di questo artista, che si muove in un immaginario che richiama il sogno, in atmosfere Rococò, dominate da personaggi puri e inquietanti che evocano nell’osservatore sentimenti contrastanti e un senso di insicurezza.

“New and Rare Works” by Ray Caesar, is an exhibition that chronicles ten year career of one of the greatest painters of Pop Surrealism, housing also some new works.
It is a unique opportunity, for those who had the good fortune to go to Culver City in California, to admire the wonderful artworks of this artist, who represents dream set in Rococo atmospheres, inhabited by pure and disturbing characters that evoke mixed feelings in the observer and a sense of insecurity.
