The Basics of Non Profit Grants

You may be starting up an organization that has great aims and philanthropic purposes. This is a noble task, and the pride that comes with doing such noble work is second to none. There is no greater feeling than to know that you’re able to make even just one person’s life better in this world we live in.

Yet how can you feed hungry people if you don’t have food? How can you educate children if you don’t have books or even chalk? How can you spread a message of love and hope around the world if you don’t even have shoes on your feet?

No matter how ascetic your objectives are, you can’t change this fact: money is essential if you want your organization to be able to do anything. As noble as any purpose can be, even the most basic of organizations need funding to function properly.

There is one way for your organization to get money for its objectives. And that’s through a non profit grant.

What’s a non profit grant?

Non profit grants are, to be simple, funding from certain individuals or organizations to your organization for non profit purposes. This is the main difference between a non profit grant proposal and a proposal for investment capital. The latter aims to use the money funded to make more money, while the former aims to use the money funded to reach the objectives of the non profit organization.

What’s a non profit grant proposal?

A Non profit grant proposal is, to be simple once again, a written document requesting non profit grants from a certain individual or organization. It basically outlines the objectives of your organization, how it matches or coincides with the objectives of the funding party, the plans on how you’ll go about achieving that objective and other relevant information about your non profit organization.

What do I get out of it?

Of course, the most important gains you’ll have from getting a non profit grant is the money. Other than that, you build up social and professional networks with the party that’s funding your organization. Plus you get more social awareness of your organization, as the funding party will then support your organization. The bigger the profile of the funding party, the bigger the non profit grant’s “advertising effect” is for your organization.

What are my responsibilities?

The most important responsibility you’ll have to bear when you’re given a non profit grant is to provide a way of showing the funding party you’re able to meet your objectives. You could even take it one step further and bring yourselves to exceed the objectives you initially set when you requested the grant. You’d better prove that you’re able to solve world hunger if that’s what your organization’s all about. Otherwise, you may have the really nasty experience of having your funding pulled out from under your feet.

So now that you know the four basics of non profit grants, you may want to consider writing up a proposal for your non profit organization. After all, no organization would function without funding.

Where can i find grant opportunities for non profit in CA?

I know about Grantstation and Grantwatch, but i cannot seem to find other websites like this. Greatly appreciate some replies, thank you.

Are you a 501C3?

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It’s a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices."

For government grants, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes

There are also a number of corporations that give grants to nonprofits. Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/citizenship/giving/
provides support to Community-Based Technology and Learning Center (CTLC) organizations including Nonprofit—in the United States, 501(c)(3) designation—or a nongovernmental organization; Government funded and operated—a nonprofit organization that receives government funding or is a partner with a governmental; and schools.

I Have My Grant Proposal, What’s My Next Step?

I am wanting to start a non profit organization, I have my grant proposal with executive summary, intro and everything including my budget for what I need, what is my next step? Were or what do I do/go from here? And if I receive a grant, do I have to pay the grant back? How do I continue to get grants?

You can NOT obtain a grant before you are a non-profit, you need to be formed first.

Many foundations tout the importance of theories of change for effective grantmaking and require their grantees to include them in their grant proposals. In this session, Albert Ruesga outlines some of the conceptual and practical difficulties with theories of change. He argues that requiring grantees to produce explicit theories of change beyond what they usually include in their grant proposals does little to improve the art or science of grantmaking.

Where can I get a grant writer for a non profit?

I run a non profit organization and I am looking for someone who can write grant proposals for us. Where is the best place to find one or does anyone donate their services to a non profit?

If you are going to be depending on grants, you should either get yourself up to speed or hire a grantwriter. You may find someone willing to volunteer to do one, but to be successful, you really want someone who can’t do so on a regular basis, and who can grow their knowledge of your organizaiton through an extended relationship.

Can someone please help for writing a grant proposal for a weekend retreat for cancer patients?

I need help coming up with a draft proposal for cancer patients. I work at a rural settlement school and we would like to have cancer patients come for a weekend in the spring and relax and enjoy crafts and hikes and motivational speeches from cancer survivors. The room and board will be 130 dollars for each patient so we are asking for a $5000 grant because we are wanting at least 30 people to attend but no more than 40.
