Honestly we think, this is the best iteration of Ovi store we have seen from Nokia. Looks like the folks at Nokia took a long look at the list of complaints reviewers and users kept throwing at them and finally took the time to iron them out before churning out their update for their app store. After all they are competing with iTunes App store and lest we sound raucous, we think the Ovi Store is ready for a head-on fight with Apple’s iTunes App store. Read more »

Nokia 5800 v40 Hack Now Available: Get Those Unsigned Apps Now!

If unsigned apps are your forte, then we have something for you which might make you jump from your couch or whatever you are seated on, reading this post of ours. The game has a feature rich design with a customizable user interface. You can choose between a number of designs for your pieces. You can even change the screen layout and boards to different shades of color. If you are an expert player and understand the movement notations then you can change your view mode which allows you see the corresponding notations of all of your game moves. This game allows you to enjoy your play with the computer as well as your friends. You can switch on your Bluetooth and set the game to listen for new users in the preferences and play via Bluetooth with your friend. You can even play the game with your friend via SMS, you simply create a new human user and select it from your contacts.

You have a number of AI (Artificial Intelligence) users already created in the game with different proficiency levels (Expert/Intermediate/Beginner). Playing with the AI users is just amazing and you can spend hours playing this game. The very first game i played on my mobile i spent an hour because it is really addictive when you don't wanna lose and play till your very last piece is gone. Speaking about the stability of the game and resource consumption, it is designed for Nokia 5800 and runs smoothly and never gets your phone stuck.
We know about the capabilities that Fring adds to your mobile phone when it comes to communicating over a number of IM services. We can interact on Gtalk, Skype, Yahoo, Aim, MSN, ICQ, Twitter and Facebook with Fring using WiFi or the data connection. The latest version of Fring brings Video Calling over Fring/Skype which is amazing and Fring claims itself to be the only such application providing such a service.

To use the video calling service all that you need to do is just search for the Fring/Skype contact on Fring and choose Video Call from the calling options. The video call facility is available to 'Fring -> Skype' and 'Fring -> Fring' calls. I hope they bring out video calling over Yahoo, MSN and Gtalk also. So now you can video chat with your friends either from Fring or Skype on PC.

UC Browser is just another browser not really as good as the Opera Browser for the Nokia 5800 i reviewed in my last post. However, it has come long way since i last knew about it. It was buggy and unstable when i last used it. UC Browser 7 is an all new avatar of the last version i laid hands on. It is much more stable and refined, displays the webpages just like you see on your PC browser.

Browsing over this browser on Nokia 5800 was a fine experience. In terms of functionality, i would say it surpasses Opera. It has an inbuilt download manager which supports low speeds over the 2G network. The download manager allows you to save your download anywhere on the phone, something which is not available in Opera 10 Beta 2. It somehow restricts the download to the phone memory only.
I have reviewed the previous versions of Opera 4 and Opera 5 for Nokia 5800 which happened to be the J2ME versions. Opera 4 was a nice one but Opera 5 somehow was not stable on Nokia 5800. Opera Mobile 10 Beta 2 is a symbian version and works flawlessly on Nokia 5800. The entire layout and user interface which appears on Nokia 5800 gives a feel as if you are not browsing on Nokia 5800 and you are on an entirely different phone.

We have been waiting to get our hands on this browser from our 5800s since long and the dawn of 2010 has finally bought this amazing browser to our dear Tube 5800s.

So, what’s the thing with this Skyfire which made this browser win the “People’s Voice Best Mobile Application” in the 2009 Webby Awards? Well, we have already spilled the beans on this one-flash support and couple that with “blazing fast” browsing speeds and you have one gem of a browser for your mobile phones. Ok, so if it’s that good how does it fare on our 5800s? Hit the read button to find out. Read more »
Wondering what? Let’s say you are traveling to some exotic location, the local language of which is as alien to you as the humanoids on Pandora of James Cameroon’s Avatar, then you are in for luck as ABBYY have just released another one of their revolutionary OCR based apps for 5800s- ABBYY’ FotoTranslate.

ABBYY FotoTranslate comes in as many as 8 versions as of now offering word-by-word translation between German, Italian, Russian, and English. I found it really interesting in the sense that you can upload all your documents (Only PDF and Powerpoint currently) on their website and view it on your mobile without a supporting application. What i mean is that to view the power-point or pdf documents that you upload, you don't need a Adobe Acrobat or Quick Office application installed on your Nokia 5800 to view them. There is a ShareMySlides application that can be used to see these documents on your phone which is absolute free at this time.
Nokia 5800 now has a free turn by turn navigation with voice and visual guidance across 70 countries. Of-course, this has come late but Nokia has finally kept our faith in it. Iphone was launched with free navigation and Google Maps already had a free version for Nokia 5800. With strict competition with other brands offering free navigation, this is a bold move from Nokia.

Not just the navigation, all the related features are free too, like free weather updates, free lonely planet and michelin guides. 2010 is all set to witness a new business strategy from Nokia. I would say that the latest firmware update and now free navigation are nice gifts for all the Nokia 5800 fans.
The new Nokia Ovi Maps with free navigation has an online mode toowhich allows you to get your location without downloading the maps on the go. It works somewhat like Google Maps. There is a bad news for all those Nokia 5800 owners who have still not updated to the firmware version 31.0.008 or higher. The new Ovi Maps is compatible only with the latest firmware v31.0.008 or higher.
I wish you a very happy navigational weekend. It is one more reason to get ASAP a car holder for Nokia 5800. Go and explore with the new free navigation service from Nokia. I know it must be hurting guys with Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition who paid more to get a lifetime navigation. To download visit the new Ovi Maps, visit http://nokia.mobi /maps on your phone's browser or click here to download directly on your PC.
I have it confirmed on the Nokia Update Finder that the upgrade does exist for my region and others too. Here is a list of all the products codes for Nokia 5800 which are eligible for this new upgrade.

With this new upgrade, we have a similar home screen like that of Nokia 5530. There is the much awaited kinetic scrolling but unfortunately not in the main menu, application menu and the browser which i feel are the main portions where we need kinetic scrolling. Anyways, it is better to have something than nothing at all. As we know with every upgrade, there is a significant touch response and overall performance improvements. Some of the phone menu icons have been changed. On the UI part, there are some additions which include new screen alarm, slide to unlock during call, new screen incoming call when the phone in locked. You also have an updated Real Player and Ovi Contacts installed. Another major change is the removal of the alphanumeric keypad in the landscape mode. Now on moving the phone, the portrait mode alphanumeric keypad changes to the full qwerty keypad.
This is a positive sign for all the Nokia 5800 users as this update has come after a very long time since the last one and proves that Nokia has not forgotten its first touch screen baby.

Nokia Software Updater is a standalone application for updating Nokia 5800's device firmware. Updating phone's firmware adds some enhancements to phone's basic features, also improve the overall device performance apart from removing identified bugs from the previousfirmware.

Nokia Betalabs has launched the compatible version of Nokia Software Updater for Windows 7. It is still a release candidate and may contain bugs. However, this version of the updater has better USB connectivity with Windows 7.

The RC version of the Nokia Software Updater will not install any special pre-release firmware updates for your phone. It is the regular application which is now enhanced to support Windows 7. Some of the basic requirements for using this software is the availability of good internet bandwidth. Your phone should have a sim card when connected to the updater. Also, make sure to follow all the onscreen instructions.

What should be avoided while upating the firmware? Use the PC Suite mode when connecting the phone to the computer. Do not use any USB hubs for connecting the phone to the computer instead use the direct USB port of your computer.

The installation package is 23 MB in size and can be downloaded free of cost. The software installation is available in all the international languages - chinese, french, italian, german, portuguese, spanish, russian, polish, dutch, croatian, malay, etc.

Download NSU - English
Yeah, the much awaited Firmware Update v40 finally lands at our Nokia 5800. The update brings with it Kinetic Scrolling and a New Home Screen similar to 5530’s.

The update has just started rolling out and is not yet available in all parts of the world. Do check on your 5800 if its available for you via OTA (Over the Air) or NSU (Nokia Software Updater). The update also reportedly fixes dozens of minor bugs and adds some performance improvements. Read more »
If you have had a symbian phone before, you would have probably heard or had this app on your phone for this is one of the most popular apps on symbian front.

Like you guys know, keeping track on all your telephonic conversations is by no means an easy task. Don’t you wish there was an telephone call recorder app which could seamlessly record all your incoming/outcoming calls without the other party learning about it? If yes, is your answer, then Total Recall is what you need. Catch the screenshots and review, after the break. Read more »
Casinos and the bubbly nightlife right? Well, the same Vegas has been doing the rounds on the web but for a totally different reason this time around, courtesy Consumer Electronics Show or CES 2010 which recently concluded in the US abode of casinos and yeah Nokia did have a device or two up its sleeves but that’s not what we are gonna talk about here. We were more than amazed by this little preview of a promising game from Nokia- Bounce Boing Battle, which is a welcome addition to the gaming scenario on 5800s.

The game which brings real time interactive multi-player gaming to 5800s will be available for free on the Ovi store soon and is the latest addition to Bounce series of games, which are pre-installed on every symbian fifth edition and maemo 5 devices. While, its too early to call this game a must have, the trailers are hinting us that we would anyway, once it is out. Find for yourselves what makes us say so, afterthe break though. Read more »

XpressCut is a simple but powerful application to cut and save songs directly on your S60 5th Edition phone. Open XpressCut, select a song, set the start tag and the end. Once you pressed the save button it will create a new file and save the song. The quality of the new created file is good and can be send to your friends or can be used as a ringtone. Apparently, XpressCut is based on Phython and requires at least Python version 1.9.7. Install Python first and then XpressCut.

If you want uninstall multiple apps on a S60 device you can do it only one after the other, not several at once. This is without a doubt a pain and takes some time. With BatchUninstall, developed by Think Change, you can uninstall multiple application at once. You just need to select all apps you want to uninstall and click ‘Delete Selected’. Batch Uninstall works on all S60 5th and 3rd edition devices.
The Nokia DC-11 has a silver aluminum body which looks good indeed. However, you should take care of it as scratches come remarkable fast and leave their trace even faster. It weights 94grams and is with it’s dimensions (113×56×11 mm) really slim but still as high and width as a phone. Nonetheless it slips perfectly in a pocket and is so a handy companion. Read the rest of this entry »
Nokia Image Space has not been tested with Nokia 5800 however, it is known to support S60 5th Edition and tested on N97 Mini.

source:nokia5800.net

Who’s the best – Nokia 5800 or the iPhone

Long before i owned a Nokia 5800, even before it was actually launched, i was crazy over iPhone (This is the blog which I read). The prime reason for this was the touch screen revolution which iPhone brought with itself. But as time progressed and there were more devices launched with touch screens, i figured out some of the major restrictions which iPhone has in terms of technology and feature support.

I being a regular user of nokia phones, owned a nokia N91 and moving on to the new iPhone had the same expectations. On an initial review itself i was disappointed for i needed a dedicated data plan with the operator for operating the iPhone. It did not support the normal gprs that i had earlier. Moreover, i came bundled with few operators and i did not have the option of an unlocked iPhone (at least in India). The camera with the iPhone did not feature a LED flash. Comparing with the Nokia 5800, it did lack a number of stuff like for a battery replacement, i needed to visit a customer care center. The Bluetooth in iPhone did not connect to other brand phones. So sharing data was a big problem when it came to multimedia files. Also, iPhone does not feature a secondary camera which comes in handy in a video call.

Comparing other features of Nokia 5800 and iPhone give the iPhone an edge over Nokia 5800 but comparing their prices, it becomes obvious for iPhone to have that edge. iPhone has better memory support and processing power and it also has a superior graphics support. There are separate groups of Nokia lovers and iPhone lovers and both the groups have their own reasons for loving these phones. Nokia is telecom giant and known for making people's phone in all categories. With phones like N900 and N97, it seems that Nokia is all set to leave the iPhone way behind. Only time will tell who wins the race.

Specs from El iPhone Blog

source:nokia5800.net
