well the verdict in the oscar grant case has been determined and johannes mehserle has been charged with involuntary manslaughter -- only one step above an acquittal. is this what justice looks like?

do you cringe when someone says "transgendered," too? this piece tries to capture why ...& while GLAAD is never my first choice for determining how lgbtq's get portrayed in the media, their grammar lesson does make a lot of sense!

*trigger warning*

Oprah talks explicitly with 4 convicted child sexual offenders in a 2 hour internet special. HOLY FUCK this pretty much blew my mind. such frank details, real call outs of accountability by O directed at these men, confessions of one's own experiences with sexual abuse as children -- i was so entranced. part of me really respects this conversation between Oprah, the convicted offenders, and their therapist. it takes a lot of courage for these men to admit their faults to anyone, let alone an international audience. on top of that i saw what i perceived to be real processing of their emotions about what they've done, and even a slight attempt to move forward if at all possible, based on how long these men have been in therapy and legal systems. unfortunately, that process of forward motion is so often blocked by not only the very systems serving offenders, but by the extreme social stigma of being a convicted sexual offender. did you know that now in NY state you can actually sign up to receive text messages on your cell phone alerting you when a convicted sexual offender moves to your neighborhood? you can even choose if you want to hear about 1, 2, or 3 tiered offenders! what is this fascination/repulsion/oppression of folks deemed the utmost of sexual perverts -- without knowing the full extent of their stories and experiences which may have lead them to commit such acts? isn't it time to start working on breaking the cycle before further condemnation?

casey has a really great post up at lord if you got lungs about some recent adventures in racism through an experience at the boston children's museum. excellent descriptions and a frank confrontation with some really awful material being taught so blatantly to children. chk it out!

yes, ive been reading this book (instead of my homework even!) but hey - its about a hampshire we can only imagine through our own experiences so many years after. the best part is that the author talks about places i know and have lived in so thats kinda cool. plus the story isnt that bad. its a perfect cheesy, mindless, yet mildly interesting cuz you know the scene he's talking about kinda book. if you went to hampshire, try to check it out if you want something light. if you wanna borrow my copy (which im borrowing from another alum!), lemme know & ill pass it along.

well? what did you think? i was...well...intrigued, for sure. its definitely held all of my attention for a whole 10 minutes on multiple occasions now. the style and the visuals (from the costumes to the sets) were pretty outstanding. the coke cans in gaga's hair? chk. honey b's blue military outfit & her facial expressions? chk. the pussy wagon? chk. i loved how lesbionic and witchy the whole thing was, too. and the pop culture refs/influences in production quality (thelma & louise, pulp fiction, any road movie with outlaws in the desert) were on point.

i didnt love and am in fact highly disturbed and frustrated by - the opening scene where two women in positions of power strip gaga and declare "see i told you she didnt have a dick" (especially since her recent strap-on fotos); the use of the prison industrial system as a setting for the perpetually present violence against and sexualization of women in gaga's vids; the smoking sunglasses -- stupid and disgusting.

January is Drag History Month!

How fun is that?!

In honor of this fagulous occasion, I wanted to share with you one of my all-time-favorite-for-ever-and-ever drag queen performances:

International Chrysis was a member of Hot Peaches, an amazingly flamboyant performance troupe formed in 1972 (Marsha P. Johnson also worked with them!). Apparently there's a documentary about her life -- Lord knows I wanna get my hands on that! International Chrysis has been called one of New York's most influential drag and trans performers -- as you can surely see in those vids! She died in 1990 at the age of 39.

Let's all just take a moment to thank her for her contribution to this world & to remember all our other queer elders who have done so much before us.
