Garage sale season has finally begun here, and man, it felt like it took forever to get here this year – I thought winter wasn’t ever going to end!  This past weekend was Victoria Day here in Canada, so it was a long weekend, which usually means there isn’t too many garage sales.  However, I made out pretty well at the few I could find!

After looking for green Pyrex casserole dishes for what seems like forever, I lucked upon another one this past week!  No lid, but that’s OK, since you don’t always need a lid anyway.

Add liquor decanter bottles to the list of things that I have been looking for forever, but now seem to be plentiful.  This one isn’t quite the same as the other two that I have, but the glass pattern was similar enough, and for 25 cents, I wasn’t about to pass it up!

I was super excited to find these Pyrex mugs in my Spring Blossom pattern.  Both Corelle and Pyrex made mugs with this pattern on them (and they were meant to coordinate), but I was always hoping I would come across the Pyrex ones at some point.

I am guessing these mugs were from the later 70s since they make mention of being microwave safe on the bottom!

And finally, I am not 100% sure if these are mid-century or not.  I bought them because I thought the blue glass would go well in my bathroom (which it does), but other than being Avon glass, I don’t know much about them.  I believe Avon glass is quite collectible.  Does anyone out there know any more about Avon glass?  I would love to know more!

Anyone else come across any good finds this past week?  I’d love to hear about them!

You know how it is, you are cruising around the web and then all of a sudden *whammo* you come across something really, really cool and your heart kinda skips a beat. Well, that’s what happened when I came across the Steel Kitchen Corporation website. NEW steel kitchen cabinets…..that you can order in the exact sizes that you need…..amazing!!!!

I know that Viking stopped production of the new ‘St. Charles’ brand steel cabinets, but they may make a comeback eventually as I heard another company may possibly take over production (maybe they have already???), but I had no idea that any other companies were actually manufacturing steel kitchen cabinets at this time.

Though these cabinets may not be the perfect vintage recreations of older style steel kitchen cabinets, how awesome to have another option available if you really want the metal cabinet look and you don’t want to wait years and years to put a set together that will fit your particular kitchen! Plus, it looks like they have lots and lots of cool options like glass front doors and pull out trash bins amongst other things.

All of the cabinets are made to order in south Florida – three cheers for American made!!! The indoor kitchen cabinets are constructed of 20 gauge stainless steel with the option of 18 gauge. You can get either a full stainless steel cabinet (box and door) or order just the door in stainless and the box constructed in wood. In looking over the pictures on the website, the wood interiors look very well made so if you were looking to save some money it may be a good option.

I sent off an e-mail to Steel Kitchen Corporation to see if I could get any more information and I received a response back from Carlos:

“Our cabinets are made with 100% stainless steel ( interior and exterior ). You may combine doors with different colors of mica to create a classic, modern or vintage design.

Our cabinets go by modular units, from 9 in. to 48 in with a 3in. increment.

Prices vary from $ 500 to $ 1500 per modular unit. An average kitchen has around 10 modular cabinets, so a 100% stainless steel kitchen will run from $ 7000 – $ 10000.

Also, we manufacture plywood interior cabinets with the same door fronts we use for our high end lines. This will give you the benefit of having the same look, for a lower cost ( 25% less ).”

I asked for clarification on the painted/wood look cabinets, as the website said there were more colors available, here is the reply back.

“The colors that you saw, are not painted. This are Formica sheets, that comes in many different colors and also in wood grains.

We could also paint the doors in case there is no available Formica color.”

As you can see in the picture below, the aqua looks painted – but it is actually a panel insert. I wanted to know if this could be changed out over time since we sometimes like to change up the look of our kitchens.

Here is his reply back:

“The Formica goes behind the frame and behind the Formica there is a panel of high density foam, which the Formica is glued to.

It is possible to change the Formica sheet in a future.”

So you could change it out from time to time if you wanted to, which is a cool option to have.

So, last week, I showed you some cool things that I saw on my trip that I didn’t buy. This week, I am going to show you what I did buy!

I really like these vintage 70s Tupperware glasses – I fear that vintage Tupperware might become my next collection obsession!

I’ve been looking for a liquor decanter set for some time now, so when I came across this one, I just had to snap it up – especially since I found it at a thrift for $4!

The lid on the one bottle has discoloured a little, but for that price tag, I can definitely overlook it.

Although I usually try to stick to dog statues, I absolutely could not pass up this lion – isn’t he gorgeous?  He’s fairly big, too, and looks great on my TV stand flanking my puma.

And there was absolutely no way I was passing up this Pyrex casserole – it’s in my pattern!  I’ve been looking for one of these forever, but was having a hard time finding one at a price I wanted to pay.  I find this size of casserole to be super handy for cooking side dishes, so it’s definitely going to get a lot of use.

Over the weekend I went to a really great estate sale and totally cleaned up! One of my scores was an entire box of unused craft kits!! Squee!!!!

The lady of the house was a member of a Craft Of The Month club (what a fabulous idea is THAT??) and she left behind all these unused kits! When I bought them I didn’t even know what the crafts were – it was kind of a mystery! After going through them I now know there are a few winners and a few that will probably go straight to Goodwill after I make them. But make them I will!

And you, my friends, are invited on my journey! Next week I’ll unveil my first attempt at making one of these kits.

In other news, I finally have another crewel kit available for purchase! This one is a small sampler and is perfect for someone who wants to try crewel but wants to start on a smaller, simpler project. I give you KitKat!

Whew! It has been a crazy couple of weeks around the ranch here in Michigan. But I am happy to say that things are finally settling down.  Well…maybe not settling down just yet. But spring is officially here and we have flowers everywhere, so that totally makes things worlds better in my book.

And just because we love to take pictures of flowers, here are some of the tulips, daffodils and other trees and plants we have blooming in our yard right now!

Don’t you love this one? I have no idea where this teeny, tiny tulip came from, but I love it. It looks like a mama tulip and her baby. And speaking of babies…

Yep, our spring baby is here!

So if you see a bit of spotty posting on my part, it is because of this little doll. Alexandra decided she was going to grace us with her presence about three and half weeks early, so Tom and I have been scrambling to get things settled down around here. But she is doing really well for being born early, and Tom is coping well, too.

Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I LOVE to look at thrift shops and antique stores when I am in a different city.  I find I often see a lot of the same stuff at home,  so I always find cool different things when I head somewhere else!  I’ve got some pictures of some neat mid-century things that I saw at the antique mall in West Seattle.

I had to get a picture of this, as this immediately made me think of our lovely blog hostess, Ruth – these baskets were all filled with vintage cookbooks!  Ruth, if you’re ever in that area, you should definitely take a look here, as you may find some great ones for your collection!

I really liked this ashtray, as it is such a mid-mod, boomerang shape.  However, I have yet to think of a good repurposing for vintage ashtrays – does anyone out there have any suggestions of other things to use them for?

Poodles, Poodles, Poodles!  These poodles were all so utterly adorable!

I liked this piece as well – this serving dish is from the Gourmates by Glo-Hill collection, which I have a collection of.  I just got a kick out of it having a Canada Centennial engraving on it, and finding it at a shop in Seattle!

They had so many salt & pepper shakers as well, including quite a few cute ones.  However, I found them to be pretty pricey – are salt and pepper shakers usually in the $25 and up range in the US?

So today I showed you all of the things that I didn’t buy … come back next Wednesday, and I will show you what I did buy!

A few weeks ago Mike and I were scrounging around a local antique/flea market-y type store. This place is a whole mish-mash of stuff, so you REALLY need to dig otherwise you could miss something good! There was a side room loaded with stuff they called “electronics”….even though some of the stuff really was not what you would consider “electronics”…..technically anyway. I guess their definition of electronics was anything that had wires???? Could turn on with a switch?…..I guess that would make it more “electric” than “electronic” though wouldn’t it? I digress.

There was a big sign proclaiming “Everything in this Room 75% off” and “ All Electronics 75% off”, wow – Really?!? Well you know this girl is all over a sale like that, so I just HAD to root around to see what I could find.

Right away I spotted this cute little vintage bathroom bar light. I came in for a closer inspection and saw that it actually looked like it had never been used, as most of the original parts were still sealed in the original bag…..and there was no sign of the usual dust and grime from a light hanging in one’s bathroom for the past 30 some odd years.

I looked closer at the price…..$3. The light was cheap from the start……but  taking the discount into account, yes – I am sure you are ahead of me here -  the light was all of 75 cents.

You just know that I could NOT pass up a cute vintage unused bathroom light for 75 cents!!!

And here is the whole kit and caboodle. You can see everything is here, even the instructions!

Here is the back of the wiring box. You can see the wires look like they have never been wired in for installation, and you can also see the old ‘Union Made’ sticker.

Here are the instructions. This light was made by the Frankelite Company in Cleveland Ohio. I tried looking the company up, but is looks like they no longer exist.

Here is a close up of one of the stars/snowflakes. The design is applied with tiny raised glass beads – it’s not just painted on.

And, one last look at the glass light cover…..super cute!
