So I was back in Santa Barbara working on a new project and was lucky enough to randomly stumble upon my SF homies from Super Best Friends Club at the ATM machine (small town). They reminded me that Pance Party was in mid-tour in support of their new EP, and were playing at Indochine that night with support by Sticky K. I was like 'catch you later then' and we did the obligatory Top Gun high-low five and peace'd out.

After the complimentary bar crawl that my new 'job' required I was able to stumble in and catch the end of Pance Party's set. I was stoked to see the joint slam packed with bass-infused revelers while DJ Vice was just a block away. Oh, how far we have come SB! (Good job Zander) Pance Party has grown a lot as well in the last year as their live set embraced more than just the banging hardcore fidget/electro sound they had become so well known for. Their new EP reflects this as well...go buy it. Good luck on the rest of your tour boys. See you in SF soon!

Alex Gopher is a phenomenal musician, and one whom I have had the great opportunity to interview in light of his upcoming release this month! He has remixed tracks by artists such as Fischerspooner, Kraftwerk, Kid Sister, Shinichi Osawa, Dada Life, LadyHawke, and more. The double CD My New Remixes will release in the US on March 16th, 2010 and will be accompanied by his first North American tour in ten years. Check out the interview below along with his 'mini mix' video. We will post some of his new tracks in the near future.

NHNF- How is life treating you at the moment?

AG- I'm back from some holidays in Mexico so I'm really good! Now a lot of work to do but my batteries are fully charged. A new studio set-up to come in the next month or two gives me even more joy.

NHNF- Growing up in France, what ways do you you think the music scene influenced or affected your style of music? Are there any local artists in particular that have influenced or inspired you?

AG- French music is really a small part of my musical culture. When we played rock music with Nicolas & JB (who became Air) in our band Orange, our only inspirations were from the US & the UK. Even though I've always been a huge fan of Serge Gainsbourg. When electronic music arrived, my friend Etienne de Crecy was the first to influence me. The EPs & album "Motorbass" he did with Philippe Zdar was a real point of departure.

NHNF- You are a man of many envious talents- guitar, bass, drums, piano, singing, DJing. Where did you pick up these skills?

AG - Sometimes I think I should have done less things but in a better way...But it comes from my nature, I like to experiment with new things, I like to learn and more than that, I like to do things by myself. I need a guitar? I try to play it. I need a singer? Well, I have a voice, no? So I sing.
Sometimes it gives something quite fragile, simple, but that's something that I love in music, that is close to the definition of rock or punk music, and electronic music of course. In all kind of Arts, I definitely prefer simplicity.

NHNF- You mentioned working alongside Etienne de Crecy and the members of Air in the beginning of your career. I notice you have further collaborated with them on some tracks on your release. Will we see more tracks coming from you guys even further in the future?

AG - To be honest, I don't know... All of us have our own careers, but each time I do a new album I ask Etienne, Nico & JB to help me! And because they are real close friends, I'm sure we will collaborate again...

NHNF- Being one of the pioneers of "French pop", or the French Touch movement, how do you feel the genre has progressed or changed since you have started producing?

AG- That's funny to see the original movement took two different ways. There is the one that I'm more in, represented by Kitsune & Ed Banger and the one much more popular represented by Bob Sinclar or David Guetta. But musically there is a natural evolution which is for me directly linked with what we did over ten years ago. In the beginning of the century, I thought this movement was dead, but it has risen again and that is really rewarding.

NHNF- How do you think your music has evovled since you started?

AG- My interest in music is always linked to new tests, new experiences. I always try record after record not to repeat myself and to always change my sound. My music and my sound is often changing by reaction. When I did my more rock & song oriented album, it was a reaction to the long Superdiscount 2 tour with Etienne de Crecy which was really techno.
This new album of remixes was a reaction after my more rock sound to go back again in an electronic way.

NHNF- Your first tour in the US for more than a decade is throughout late April/May of this year. What cities are you most pumped on playing at?

AG- I have really good memories of my first tour, cities like LA, New York or Phoenix are places I wanna play again!

NHNF- What is one of your favorite tracks to play live and why?

AG- It's changing very often! But I have played the remix I did for "Push" by Shinichi Osawa for more than two years now... I like it cause it's really musical but really danceable and funky at the same time, and it fits with all kinds of atmospheres. I'm proud of it!

NHNF- With the release of your double CD "My New Remixes" coming out in the US this March, what can we expect?

AG- We are releasing this double album as a physical double CD and digitally on itunes store and all the main platforms. And of course we are working on the tour to go with.

NHNF- Can you give us an idea of your music-making progress?

AG- I'm an old-school producer, I work with mainly hardware instruments. I have a studio which is quite classical with an analog mixing desk, Protools and a lot of vintage equipment- synthesizers, drum machines, effects... I often melt real instruments and samples, so guitars or basses are always plugged-in and ready in my studio. The computer is my tool to add the modern touch.

NHNF- What new artists today do you find yourself listening to?

AG- In different categories, people like Proxy, Soulwax, Clap Rules, Vampire Weekend, MGMT.

NHNF- What are some of the challenges you have encountered in your career as a musician?

AG- One of the most difficult things for me is to find the right balance between composition & production. In modern music, both are of equal importance. The right balance gives this magic thing that makes a track a good track. That's my obsession. You have to analyze it and think about it, but at the same time forget it to be fresh and innovative...very difficult!

NHNF- What would you be doing if you weren't a musician?

AG- I'd like to be a photographer. Or a car repairer!

NHNF- When DJing, what artists do you like including in your set? How do you mix it up?

AG- I never think in terms of artists but tracks. But of course there are some bands or names that are often coming up again in my sets. These days, Dada Life, Proxy, my friend Etienne de Crecy, Soulwax, are in good place.

NHNF- Any food for thought or advice for aspiring DJs and producers?

AG- It's much more simple to become and be booked as a DJ when you are a producer. And now with the softwares, it's really easy to do tracks with just a computer. It's just about inspiration and talent. So go ahead and try! But be original & self-critical with yourself, it's the only way to progress.

NHNF- What's the future looking like for Alex Gopher? Anything we should be anticipating? (Aside from your release in March!)

AG- I'm working on a new album with another French producer, 25 Hours A Day. And I'm preparing new releases on my own label Go 4 Music, from UK artists Pablo Decoder & Tim Healey, and from a French yong producer Sovnger.

NHNF- Finally, if your life had a theme song- what would it be?

AG- Difficult question... New Order "Blue Monday"

I have been holding out on sharing these guys for my own selfish pleasure. The more and more I listen to them though, I feel it’s my responsibility to share. Downtown Party Network is a Lithuanian duo with a refreshing disco'd out sound. I am always putting their tracks on repeat; catching myself in a floating musical mind state. Its members include Dj Saulty who was voted best Lithuanian DJ of 2010 and experienced producer and pianist Bradka. Their synthy, Nu Disco sounds will put you in a trance and take you through space.

This summer their new EP is coming out on Eskimo Recordings + a remix for dutch guys TJ Kong and Nuno Dos Santos on Compost recordings. You can also expect a remix for Justin Robertson’s project Deadstock 33s on the label “Is it Balearic?” I went ahead and posted some of my favorite tracks and remixes by them. Enjoy!

I got hyped up on some "Tron Legacy" leaks I heard this week and decided to break out a few Daft Punk club classics. These aren't your everyday blog remixes. Most of these cuts are solid in the popular clubs and can let a regular crowd know that you are down with the real ish.

1) Discotech - Kanye Daft Transition (104-112BPM)

This is a very smooth transition track from Kanye's "Stronger" into "Robot Rock." Old School but definite crowd favorite.

2)Daft Punk vs. Talking Heads - Burnin' Psycho Killer

A rough mix which needs some serious "cue points" but works well early at the scenester spots. Worth a try for sure.

3) Michael Jackson - Rock With You (Daft Punk White Label Mix)

CLASSIC!

4) Daft Punk - Short Circuit (Pat Swayzak "Freeze" Edit)

12:30am track to get from Top 40 to House. Get it.

5) Daft Punk - Emotion (Ali's La Plage Edit)

I wouldn't play this out at the club unless I was in the lounge, but SO solid on the mix.

So I am off to play a Bulgarian House Party tonight in Boston...don't ask! I wonder if they will dig some of The Bulgarian? Or is that like assuming people in Turkey actually eat Turkey? Anyways, listening to some of his tracks got me into the banger, slammer sort of mood. Here are a few goodies for your grab bag.

Hatiras has been around since I first started DJing back in the late 90's and he has always found ways to reinvent himself. Adding a little wobble to his big building, driving sound works on this remix of Soap.

2 Year Anniversary Warehouse Party!

It’s that time again, but with each party, they just keep getting better. Its Danceism’s 2 year Anniversary this Saturday, Feb.27th! For those who haven’t read my previous praises of their parties, you need to get your head in the game. I hate to be a broken record but Danceism throws the best parties LA has seen in awhile. This isn’t your schmooze, stuck up Hollywood club (crap). This is the combination of music, art and down to earth people.

This being the 2 year Anniversary- expect only the best. I’m talking a massive warehouse party including not only the diehard Danceism goers, but we have BBE and Gotta Dance Dirty friends also joining in the festivities so this is going to be epic. This month they have Mr. White, who I have seen tear it up at Control almost every Friday, along with Ben Oprstu, Robot Love, Bones, Doc P, Asaa & SP and Sean Kim. If you miss out on this one, you’re an idiot.

The Extrawelt remix goes deep electro. Excellent.

I love how retro everyone is these days...calling their digital mixes 'mixtapes' as if anyone still owns a tape player or even a CD player for that matter. Yet, if anyone could get away with calling their mix a 'mixtape' it would be these guys, The Diogenes Club. The Parisian group, Acid Washed is not some cheese ball 80's big hair metal band like I first looked up here but rather a hip spaced out disco duo 'deteriorating sound amongst souvenirs, friends, home studios and analogue equipment' as their Myspace page so pointedly and ambiguously points out. A mix of 80's, house and Washed Out, their music is definitely both fun and intelligent and something to look out for in 2010. Here is their remix of Wolfmother which I think is far superior to the original.

Just got the new Discotexas Forbidden Cuts Vol. 1 EP and it is good times all around. Really loving everything this crew is putting out these days. Funky, electro-tinged disco house at its new best. Moullinex and Xinobi bring some flavor on this new joint but newcomer Rockets really has a standout track going on here, 'Running To You' with its Moroderish filtered in bassline and big hooks. Look out for the next Discotexas release by another remix master a la Fred Falke, Justin Faust later this month. His new single, 'Holdin' On' has some hot remixes by both Moullinex and my favorite Nightriders which I included here as a super hot, no one has yet uber exclusive.

This Saturday Jan. 30th, DANCEiSM brings you SonicC- an 18 year old producer from Miami- new to the DIM MAK Record Label, along with resident DJs Ben Oprstu, Robot Love and ASAA, as well as Paul Devro (Mad Decent) and BONES (GDD). Tons of dope new stuff dropping to start 2010 in a huge way. Some of the most exciting stuff for me is the post-garage/bass/step/beats end of things. I am eating up the cross-breeding of genres and sounds that got going in 08 and fully took off in 2009. While the combination of techno and dub soundscapes is nothing new, throwing some broken beats and heavy dub drops with the wonk element of electro, and its bastard cousin of dare-I-call-it 'ambient garage', has really made listening to the cutting edge of music quite exciting. Here's to big things for 2010.

DJ Food - The Shape Of Things That Hum (Nin ja Tune)

Ok, DJ Food is back and the world is a better place because of it. The first track brings DJ DK of Solid Steel fame in to collaborate and they come out with a filthy dub breakbeat stormer with all kinds of build. So nasty in a nice way.

The rest of the EP is classic DJ Food with lush strings and wind work building the tension like the true master that he is. Essential.

Big set of remixes here with a bunch of different takes including a bass party by Herve, a jackin' big roomer from Laidback Luke and more, but the slow building nu-electro of the "Solo Loves Panorama' remix, which drops into a sick, quirky and majorly funky groove is my top pick. Kris Menace's 'Love On Laserdisc' remix does it right as well, with a beautiful vocal treatment (not that Dave Gahan needs the help) while plucking strings build the mood into a proggy big room hand-raiser. Excellent.

One of the female MCs that was just ahead of the vocal electro curve a few years back, drops this catchy single with a relatively simple flow, some jazzy horns but an undeniable hook. Starkey gets all twisted and steppy, while Zombie Disco Squad keep it smooth and deep.

Australia has been a haven for amazing electronic music the last 5 years. I don't know if it is the blazing hot sun frying people's brains or the topless beaches but whatever is going on down there I am glad that that one time prison colony has become what it is today. We all know about the Modular artists, Bang Gang crew, etc but there are some other peeps doin it right in the house/breakbeat scene as well.

One of these cats is Kid Kenobi who has been a long time all star DJ down under and has a number of quality productions/remixes to boot. The dude rocks the club proper with an assortment of sounds that never get old and is probably best known for this '07 breaky electro house track...

What really brought my attention to him recently though was through a mixtape fellow Aussies Destroy Disco did for Palms Out Sounds during the summer that I happened to listen to again while on a recent run. Destroy Disco have been killing it for years as well with their dope blend of dubstep and house and their remix of the new Kid Kenobi track is nuts. A must have really. Looking forward to much much more from these guys!

SebastiAn, the guy who opened my eyes back in '06 to 'dirty electro' is finally releasing his LP sometime in 2010. There has already been a lot of hype about his first released song that was part of the Ed Banger Christmas Promo EP. 'Threnody' takes its name from the title of a piece performed by the Polish National Symphony Orchestra about the horrors of Hiroshima. This is the source of the sample he tweaks and uses for the momentous drop that has got to be the longest, most drawn out intro ever and obviously a gimmick to hype up his upcoming release.

When I first listened to the track I almost had an anxiety attack...which is probably the statement SebastiAn was going for in regards to a lot of the music being put out the last two years! Once the track finally does drop however we have that classic SebatiAn distorted funk. As long as he sticks to that sound in his new album I think many people will be very very happy.

I've been getting some tracks from these guys in our blog inbox and after listening to their Dec '09 End of the Year wrap up promo I knew I had to give them some love on a French House Fridays post. While their name might sound French, the duo of Le Principle actually hail from Chicago and throw a monthly event called Trick Disco at the Subterranean every third Friday in Chi Town. While many of their original tracks are a throwback to the late 90's disco house that saturated house music at that time, they bring a bit of glitch and modern production quality to their music that makes them sound fresh and new. I especially like their bootlegs and have added a few for you here to enjoy.

Back in the saddle again after a crazy Christmas season. I'm going to start off this year with some flavor I found from an artist named Electro Sound.
