Unfortunately NHNF will no longer be providing you with new posts as we have decided to retire the blog. We here at NHNF have all moved on in different directions and will no longer have the ability nor the time to dedicate any energy to the blog. It was a nice run while it lasted and we will keep the archived posts on here for awhile so if you wanna grab some old French House or DJ friendly mashups feel free to peruse through the last couple years via the categories or blog archiver.

I myself am jumping on board as music director for friend, Bryden Lando's company Future Heretics and their action sports line, HX. We will have a fun and exciting blog on both sites full of funny videos, great music and fashion-oriented content. As for Swayzak, you can catch him just about any weekend destroying clubs in beautiful Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Our Quick Picks author, Ben Abstrakt is still doing his thing in the Bay and I'm sure he will find a new way to share his love for all things bassy. We thank all of our dedicated readers for the support over the years.

Teaser For The Soon To Be New Sensation, METROPOLIS

I've always considered myself to have an ear for success. Not my own mind you but that of unknown bands/performers destined to become super stars. When I first heard Trapped In A Box back in the day by the then greatly unknown but locally adored No Doubt, I remember telling my mom (who was driving us to Mammoth at the time) that this Gwen chic was gonna be a star. When I first saw Blink (before the 182) at the Showcase Theater in Pomona (after Skreech from Saved By The Bell opened for them...gotta love the 90's) I told my buddy Ryan that they would be the SoCal pop punk sellout band of all time. And when I first heard a demo from a then 16 year old kid named Joey Youngman (you know, Wolfgang Gartner...) after DJing some party in SLO in '99, I pretty much knew the guy was gonna blow the eff up ('... America's new top talent' - Pete Tong, 2010.)

So, that being said, you should know that the new group I am about to unveil has my success ears perked and my insides feeling real good. While they are friends of mine who have already found some success with their first project (to be left un-named for now), this in no way played any role in my opinion of their new musical enterprise. To be flat out honest, I was blown away by the songs I heard during a late night after party in their studio. The overall soundscapes and compositions in much of what I heard have that almost Depeche Mode vibe going on but with a much more modern production quality and feel. Think Miike Snow meets The Knife with even more edge and you may be getting close. This teaser demo really doesn't do the band justice as it features mostly bangers and not much of their orchestrated pop-y stuff that I felt set them apart. That is the key. In order to get to that level of success experienced by the aforementioned artists, you need to have your own sound that is different but be listen-able and catchy as well. I think these guys nailed it. Here's the teaser for what's to come... Welcome to Metropolis.

We watched LCD Soundsystem's last live show ever on my laptop via Pitchfork last night while making dinner, eating dinner, cleaning up after dinner, making dessert, eating dessert, smoking and drinking all the while. That's cause the show was over 3 and a half hours long!... which made for one helluva dinner party. Mr. Murphy seemed to be having a good time too!...up until the emotional finale and sudden ending. A fuckin classic show I will never forget...all seen from the comfort of my own house!

Bag Raiders Tonight At The Rickshaw Stop.

If you live in San Francisco and like the Bag Raiders, you are already VERY familiar with the Rickshaw Stop and Popscene. Premiere indie party in the city for years. 'Nough said. For those of you who don't live in SF and like the Bag Raiders, you now have a great excuse to visit our fair city. A little last minute I know but this dynamic indie-electro duo hailing from Sydney literally does bring the sunlight. Fog city San Fran is expected to be a perfect sunny 75 degrees today and tomorrow. (That alone being an amazing reason to visit!!)

Of course, these guys have been hot for awhile now. With a massively successful recent slew of releases, including their critically acclaimed self-titled first album, their new hit single 'Sunlight' and their upcoming remix of Monarchy's 'I Won't Let Go', it appears that the Bag Raiders are destined to raid our Summer here in the States as well. Coachella Spotlight :: Everyone Do The Monarchy Flashmob Dance

I am all for safe dancing but this is taking it to a whole new level! Apparently, the indie-dance phenom, Monarchy is bringing on stage this golden Zentai Travolta at this year's Coachella Music Festival. The dancer Take Some Crime, who made this video in his basement for fun, is now having his dreams come true with a trip to Coachella and a live performance with the band during 'Love Get Out Of My Way'.

Monarchy is promoting the dance as a Flashmob, hoping that their fans will learn the moves and join in during the chorus of the song. If this was any other band, I'd call this out as a cheap publicity gimmick but with these guys, who have remained anonymous to stay true to their music, I believe ART is still the focus. Blown away by their recent outpouring of blissful indie-electro pop, I had already planned on catching their set this year but now am double pumped to see what happens when 1000 desert revelers break out into unison, following the smooth moves of this golden boy Youtube sensation. Will you join in??

If you haven't heard yet, things have been kinda getting dark lately in the world around us: tsunamis, nuclear disasters, daily volcano eruptions and earthquakes, mass animal die-offs, wars in the Middle East, etc etc. I am actually watching CNN again for the first time since 9/11...their stoked, ratings are soaring!

I've decided that if this is the sign of the apocalypse, I'm not going down like some chump in a bunker, choking down potassium iodine pills and re hydrated potatoes. Eff that! Life's too short. The long time Planet Mu (label of the year so far??) contributor is usually a little more on the IDM tip, but here he delivers a post-dubstep cut and it's some of his best work yet. 'Allele' is bouncy bass and big drops up against some classic breaks and come out sounding real nice. Flip for a proper slo and lo bass exploration.

Following up 'Footcrab' with what IMO is an even sicker cut, the man aka Headhunter brings the big 808's once again to blow up any and all dancefloors. Interesting mix of blissed-out breakbeats here that come in a variety of fine flavors. The title track sounds like a mid 90's Hidden Agenda track on 33. Skip to the super hot T. Williams remix for a Night Slug style stepper with a bit of wobble and tons of energy. Nice.

The Strokes "Angles" Album Review Part 1

I love The Strokes. Always have. I've seen these guys a bunch of times with some of the most important people in my life and I will cherish those memories forever. That being said, I unfortunately will not cherish this album forever. It has a couple key moments where I was glad that they gave it another go but those moments are way too far and few between (as if i didn't think that on the last album) and they really don't feel like classic moments. It sounds like guys that are way out of touch with one another. It feels forced and nothing sounds worse than when you try and force the magic of musical inspiration. I would like to just say wtf, these guys are over it, I'm over it, lets just forget this tired ass relationship and bask in the memories of a better time. My love says otherwise. It says lets do a review! Don't give up Patty. These guys have crafted some of the best damn jangle rock ever... stroked. Surely there must be something here. Lets find out... but be warned, I love the Strokes so some of these words will be harsh...but its out of love.

Machu Picchu: D+

Machu Picchu is one of those "OK, lets get to the chorus cuz I know full well where your jammy reggae infused doodlings have led me in the past and I want to go there Jules. I wanna go there fast". Then something terrible happens. The hook isn't a hook. He starts yelling some chant at me. I don't know why. I don't know what the fuck is going on. WHAT? What are you saying Jules? What is it? Theres a cool guitar riff for a minute. Rinse repeat and were done.

(30 seconds left in the track guys. Do something cool! Oh. OK. Just more yelling. Whats that? Go fuck myself? Right. Got it.)

Under Cover of Darkness: C+

The Single? The verse sounds like a bad attempt at early 80's metal with a fuzzy bass hook. Its just not good. Its not even really worthy of a review save for the literally ten seconds of uncanny coolness at 0:48 - 0:58. It just makes no sense. And then they never do it again. How can you have ten seconds of catchy con leche and then the rest of the song be...well, you've heard it. Long story short, you guys need to hang out more before you try and craft your single or at least be able to pick out the catchy parts of your own fukin song. Painful in the worst way.

Two Kinds of Happiness: C

Way too traditional. Nothing to see here kids, move along. It sounds like the Cars in the studio with U2 on a take where the edge really stepped it up! Really went there man. Epic... Next time, just punch me in the dick. If you were going for mediocre, you my found it.

You're So Right: F

Should really be called "You're So Wrong". Wrong to write this. Wrong to think people would like this. Wrong to rip off Crystal Castles "Crimewave" so blatantly. Wrong to think you would get away with it. Well I guess you're not wrong about that completely...yet. The opening lyric, "Tell me what happened" really couldn't be more fitting, could it? I don't even want him to tell me what happened, I just want to move on to the next song. Thomas Crown Affair. No wonder it was only two minutes. Boo.

Taken For A Fool: A

I'm finally paying attention! Ratatat bass fuzz! Catchy lyrics! They are starting to sound like a band I used to really really love and I feel the blood rushing back to my face. Could it be? Could it really be? I gotta admit, after that last one, I'm a bit skeptical. I'm guarded, but I get one verse and the whole thing is going down smooth as eggs. I'm really getting into it. Classic down stroke riffage over the fab five up beat. That man is a drum machine in the flesh, viva Italia! Nick is doing his damn thing like he showed up to do something today. Good for him. Then I get really excited. They hit me with the old "second verse before the chorus" which for any self respecting Strokes fan, is (or definitely could be) a very good sign! Sooo, I keep listening and like they stepped out of 2003 with something to prove, BAM, It just washes over me. The whole chorus just delivers BIG, right on time and I'm whisked away. This is what the Strokes should be. This is what the Strokes are. Welcome back boys. Been too long. Sorry for the harsh words. I could talk about the trite little breakdown but why get negative at a time like this? Calling out to his mama? Forgivable. Whatever. Fact is they just brought it. So far, on this album, this track is in a class of its own. Ding dong. Who's there? One of your favorite bands back from the dead! I love these guys.

Once again, our buddies over at Future Heretics will be one of the major highlights at this year's LA Fashion Week. I was stoked and honored to do the official mix for their show and the companion CD. This year's theme is 'Explore' so we got 'deep in the jungle' with the first few tracks and then kept it dark and moody with some great electro classics.

Scoring Movies...It's Now All The Rage: Chemical Brothers Get In On The Action

With 'alt' dudes like Trent Reznor and Daft Punk scoring films in 2010 (and Reznor even winning an Oscar!), I guaranteed that we would be seeing a lot more big name electronic and indie producers throwing their talents towards major motion picture soundtracks this year. And guess what!? The Chemical Brothers have done just that with their score for the action thriller Hanna, which is due for limited theatrical release on April 8th.

The movie actually looks pretty badass featuring a stellar cast including Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), Eric Bana (in a typical Bana-esque stud role) and Cate Blanchett (as the villain). Like the movie Kick-Ass, this film features a young girl who is trained in the art of assassination and survival by her ex-CIA father and must go out and kill people to protect him. From the trailer, the most immediately appealing part for me was the Chemical Brothers' score. It seems to hit right on with the the pace and style of the movie. Like Reznor, these guys have always made cinematic-sounding music so this only seems like a natural progression and could possibly result in a lot more work like this...Oscar in their future possibly??

I occasionally play an 'ironic hip hop' night in the SF Mission at a little bar called Gestalt. Great joint that serves like 25 German beers on tap and stays sweaty most the night. Good times, great eclectic crowd. I play about 85% 90's hip hop, 10% indie/backpack rap and only about 5% new shit. We have been hesitant to write anything else since our Charlie Sheen post last week as he is still killing it in the press (and the Google juice is still flowing) but I think we found a parallel subject that is relevant to his story and our overall love for all things re: French house music: Daft Coke.

As Pitchfork brought to light last week, the French house duo we admire so much is getting its own set of Coke bottles dedicated to their image. I guess Pepsi isn't the voice of a new generation anymore. We find it funny that the literal meaning of 'daft coke' is 'bad coke' which I don't think anyone really likes, not even Charlie Sheen. Why our robot friends have decided to sell out in this manner is pretty obvious...for the mula, but will they please get back in the studio and start making some more jams already?? Charlie Sheen Is Our Hero!!

What do hookers, blow and 3 night booze binges add up to in Hollywood?? A very successful sitcom and a whole lot of bloodsucking media attention. Modern day celebrity is a very strange thing. Once at the mega-famous level, the more sex tapes and arrests, the more money you make for everyone involved. The agents, the network execs, etc are all secretly rooting for that next 3 night porn star blow bonanza.

No one better represents this right now than Mr. Sheen... "Two and Half Men", while completely formalistic in approach, is still killing it because of Charlie. A recent poll showed that 90% of the show's avid fans said that they could care less about Mr. Sheen's drug abuse as long as he does a good job on the show. That's the beauty of entertainment, you are free to do whatever you want as long as it doesn't effect your ability to 'bring it'. While I want to feel bad for the guy and his addiction issues, I really just wanna hang with him for one night. I mean, what could be better than a night of binge drinking and 9/11 conspiracy talk with a few naked 10's walking around? Here are some new tracks to go along with that magical night!!

The universe works in weird ways. 1 day after publishing this post, Charlie Sheen's show, "Two and a Half Men" got the axe from CBS after he lambasted EP Chuck Lorre on the Alex Jones show today. He called Lorre 'a stupid stupid little man' and 'a piece of shit'! That will definitely get you cancelled!! The guy knows no bounds and we love him even more for it!!! Now download those tracks bitches!!

Who would have ever know when we first published this post that Charlie Sheen would be where he is now!...creating new pop culture terms such as #tigerblood and #adonisDNA and interviewing with every major news show in the world. After being fired from 'Two and Half Men', his 'Sheen's Corner', while a complete flop, still managed to pull in over a million viewers!! The guy may be half dead-looking and slightly off his marbles but you gotta give it up to him for sticking to his game plan and giving the establishment a big middle finger. #WINNING!!

The last few months I have run across enough dope Aniki tracks and remixes to merit a post. It's been awhile I know...we are all super busy running shit...so this is a testament to how much this dude's stuff effected me. I was amazed I had slept on him for so long and realized that this was probably due to the fact that the guy had originally come out of world more alien to me than Nascar...the hardcore scene. Fortunately for us the dude discovered the world of bassy fidget electro and hasn't looked back. From the demented Frenchified heads of Pilooski (you know, the guy who did that Frankie Valli remix now seen on Puma commercials...) and Pentile comes Discodeine. I first found out about them when I heard their grooving Joystick single a year or 2 ago but had no clue that this was from part of the same guy behind that Valli Beggin remix! Just goes to show that Pilooski isn't a one trick wonder.

Nightslugs Allstars Volume 1 (Night Slugs)

Brilliant first comp from my favorite label of the year, showcasing their talented roster of future music stars. The gang is all here including L-Vis 1990, Bok Bok, Kingdom, Egyptrixx, and Girl Unit plus a few newer names like Lil Silva and Jam City. All are class, including a beautiful, acid-bass tune from Jacques Green (definitely one to watch for in 2011), the bouncy VIP of Mosca's awesome and spaced-out 'Square One', and the tropical bass stepper, 'Bust Broke' by Kingdom. This label is at the forefront and not letting up! All heat!!

Brenmar - At It Again ep (Discobelle)

Oh yea! The smokin' hot Discobelle drops this ep from Chicago / NYC's Brenmar, and it is full of killers! The title track is a tropical bouncer that works up the vibe perfectly on its own at 140, but then gets turned into a 160 juke/footwork romp on a 3 way Chitown remix that is sure to set the floors on fire. 'Taking It Down' is smooth and funky r'n'b style garage cut, while 'You Make Me Say' goes back to the post-everything zone and then gets remixed into a cascading vocal storm by Ikonika and Optimum. Don't sleep!

Scuba - You Got Me / So You Think You're Special (Hotflush)

Single versions of two absolutely stunning tracks from Scuba's amazing Triangulation album. 'You Got Me' marches ahead with a some nice, snappy snares while some lush jazz pads and warm subs bass allow the glitches to creep in and sit perfectly inside. Flip for a slow motion breakbeat workout featuring some absolutely stunning vocals (who is that?!). Wow!

Appleblim & Ramadanman - Void 23 (Aus Music)

As much techno as it (sort-of) is (dare i say) dubstep, this dark and moody tune has all the right pieces in all of the right places. Bouncing along and creating a really intricate and tense vibe under some rattling percussion, this one will be move any discerning dancefloor into the right mood. As if it couldn't get any better, the mighty Carl Craig re-edits things into a funky, minimal techno groove that is pure class. Unmissable!!

Fantastic Mr. Fox - Evelyn ep (Black Acre)

Coming through with a sound similar to the chopped vocal styles of James Blake and Mount Kimbie, this is some dope synthed out and funked up post-dubstep business for ya. Each track has a punchy and beat heavy vibe,with some jazzy leanings that works as well at home as it would on your more forward thinking dancefloors. Quality.

Joy Orbison - BB / Ladywell (Doldrums)

Another gem from this Quick Six fave and a producer who never fails to push the boundries and perk up your ears. 'BB' is an analog techno-step straight outta Detroit - lush and funky. 'Ladywell' takes it a little more Chicago with the vocals, but keeps its heart in the motor city while reppin' that London sumting. Get it.

So I was playing last night with Gotta Dance Dirty's Tron Jeremy at this super sexy house party put on by Collaborative Media (never seen so many 10's in Sf in my entire life!) and Mr. Jeremy dropped this funky disco remix of Empire Of The Sun that had the DJ Falcon 'Honeymoon' sample in it. It worked perfectly and I took notice of who was behind this ingenious remix...Go Go Bizkitt!

I can't believe I slept on this guy, Tom Nelson, AKA Go Go Bizkitt! for so long! His French house style is unique and funky as all hell...I am calling him the new Treasure Fingers. He has in the time of about 6 months released a slew of dope remixes and has an EP avail on Beatport that is a must buy. I can't wait to see what else this guy has to offer. Here's a couple tracks to wet your palette.
