It seemed like just a couple of minutes ago that we posted of Street Fighter IV coming tonight. Wait, it was just a couple of minutes ago. Street Fighter IV has arrived onto the iPhone at approximately 8:10 Pacific Standard Time.

Of course, as for all iPhone games, expectations should be kept in check until you actually get some hands-on time. To me, the controls look a little bit iffy, and pulling off all those combo attacks seem to be quite difficult. Nonetheless, it would be best not to judge a game by its screenshots and actually start to play the game.

The features included are as follows:

Fight as eight Street Fighter characters in seven different environments.

Full move sets including Unique Attacks, Special Moves, Focus Attacks, Super Combos and Ultra Combos.

For a true arcade experience, battle head-to-head on Bluetooth against friends and foes alike.

Robust “Dojo” boot camp transforms neophytes into Street Fighter masters in five in-depth lessons.

Customize the controls for your style of play. Move the buttons anywhere you want on the screen and set the level of transparency.

Unleash super moves with a tap of the “SP” button, or toggle it off from the “Options” menu if you want to enter the button combo manually.

Four levels of difficulty.

Let’s just hope they don’t release a Super edition weeks into the release of Street Fighter IV. Street Fighter IV costs $9.99, and there is no lite version available.

Here’s an excerpt from the game description:

Roll your way through the Floating Ruins, explore space on the Orbital Platform, and finally finish the fight in Drallo’s Fortress. With over 100 keys to collect, Bounce On 2: Drallo’s Demise will keep you playing and playing. Find hidden secrets, fight against unique bosses, collect gems, get best times and track them on Plus+ leaderboards, earn Plus+ Awards, and more!

It seems like Bounce On 2 will be released this month, as the trailer makes the game look quite complete to me. Of course, don’t quote me on that as it’s all speculation.

If you want to try Bounce On for free, there is a lite version available. This should give you a slight taste for how the second one will play like.

According to an article on Joystiq, Street Fighter 4 will be released into the App Store tonight. Capcom has apparently stated that it could appear any time within the next few hours. Get ready for some old fashioned button mashing! Wait a sec…

HADOUKEN!

Street Fighter 4 has been one of the most popular fighting franchises in the history of fighting franchises, and the release on iPhone should prove to be quite successful. While Capcom has a knack for ruining games for the iPhone, it’ll be interesting to see how everything plays out.

If you aren’t familiarized with Street Fighter IV and its predecessors, check out this excerpt from Wikipedia:

Street Fighter, commonly abbreviated as SF, is a Japanese fighting game in which the players pit the video games’ competitive fighters from around the world, each with his or her own special moves, against one another. Capcom released the first game in the series in August 1987.

And that’s that. Expect Street Fight IV to drop into the App Store TONIGHT!

It seems like EA’s announcement of Tiger Woods ‘11 that will feature the Ryder Cup wasn’t the only big news; Tiger Woods PGA Tour ‘11 is coming to the iPhone. Yes, we know that 2011 is quite far from today, as the year 2010 has just begun. But, it’s good to know that EA has decided to keep up with the franchise on the iPhone.

The original Tiger Woods on the iPhone received a Must Have rating from us, as it has and still is the best golf sim on the platform. Golf has been a sport that hasn’t been tackled too much, but EA definitely delivered.

Here’s an excerpt from Techulous’s article about Tiger Woods PGA Tour ‘11:

The Ryder Cup, a competition hosted by Ryder Cup Europe LLP and the PGA of America, brings together the best American and European golfers in a team competition format, and the cover of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11 is a direct reflection of the tournament – as Tiger Woods denotes the U.S. team and Rory McIlroy represents the Europeans. McIlroy, hailing from Northern Ireland and currently ranked 9th according to the Official World Golf Rankings, has posted several impressive showings early in his professional golfing career. Last year, McIlroy had five top 10 PGA TOUR finishes including a third-place tie in the 2009 PGA Championship and made the cut in all four majors. As an amateur, McIlroy also has a strong history in team play events, which include appearances in the Junior Ryder Cup and Walker Cup.

And according to Techulous, the iPhone version will arrive as early as June 8th. Of course, we’ll keep you posted once more news starts to appear.

The Hero by Chillingo and Traplight Games flew into the app store this week. As the name suggests, you play as “The Hero,” charged with saving the city from all kinds of bad guys, putting out fires, exterminating insects, high fiving your fans, and just all in all being a great superhero. Oh yeah, you get to save a few parachuting babies in your travels.

Graphically The Hero is a work of spectacular piece of art. Lots of tiny details are included and even on the small screen readily apparent. From the fire escapes to the signs on the buildings, nothing is overlooked. Even your fans are visually sharp as they wave to you flying by, awaiting their high five. This Hero needs to be his own public relations agent you see, and in the hustle and bustle of saving the city, needs to find the time to high five his adoring fans to keep his fame points high. Doesn’t seem fair that after all the Hero does for the city he has to keep his reputation and fame high, but lose faith with the city residents and it’s mission over. So those fans are what keeps the Hero going.

Not only do the fans keep the Hero’s fame points high, they also provide the fuel for three special super powers that help the Hero in his quest to rid the city of the evil that lurks around every corner.

Lots of content abounds with Chillingo’s Crystal Integration jam packed with awards and online leaderboards. A campaign mode with 15 different quests to solve unlocks a survival mode along the way. But at it’s very core is a fun game that allows you to lose yourself in the fantasy world and if only for a few minutes at a time, you can be the Hero that saves the city.

Likes:

Graphics: As mentioned, this game is a work of art. No detail is left unturned and it’s very evident that a lot of work and attention went into making this game a beautiful sight. The sounds from the residents and the flashing cars when the Hero accidentally crashes are a nice distraction.

Storyline: With 15 missions assigned by the Chief of Police and constant reminders from Ms Rose regarding your reputation and do’s and don’ts, there is a theme that carries from one mission to the next. Interspersed with humor, subtlety and cleverness is cute bantering that should not be skipped. The reminder, in the form of a reprimand, not to destroy the residents vehicles was especially funny.

Controls: You control the Hero with either a virtual joystick or by tilt control. The virtual joystick is very responsive and since I am not a fan of tilt control found the choice refreshing. Boost and power up buttons are located on the screen as well, and little indicators are visible showing you how close you are to activating these power ups. A nice touch. Directing you are colored arrows on the screen, each color a different threat level. These are very helpful to guide you to the most imminent places of danger in the city. My one wish would be that the Hero could turn a little quicker. Sometimes my turns felt like high wire aerial acrobatics moving from one place to another. A bit more precision would be welcomed in this area.

Dislikes:

Mission Progress: While during each mission there is an update of the percent of the mission you have finished as you progress, some sort of steady progress bar would be helpful to indicate how close you are to fulfilling the mission requirements. Juggling your fame in the form of high fiving your fans, putting out fires, catching babies, and catching bad guys of one sort or another is pretty hard work, so it would be great to gauge how close you are to the end of each mission. A few times I completed the mission with merely one more high five, so some kind of clarification on that would be appreciated.

Overall, The Hero will have you clamoring for more as you will feel you need to save the city from more ill wills. Good thing this Hero is around for what appears to be the unluckiest city in the world, and he is prepared to fend off a variety of evils to keep its residents safe. Working to unlock all the achievements will lead you back to playing more and more and with that will come the satisfaction of a job well done. And heck, saving all the babies in their parachutes is reward in and of itself.

I like to think of the first Ragdoll Blaster game as being something of a cult classic among iPhone gamers. At first glance it’s a relatively simple-looking affair, a physics-based cannon game with inventive levels and funky doodle graphics. You’re given as many ragdolls as you may need, and the aim of the game is to complete all of the levels via ragdoll-target-collision-engineering. In plain English: shoot the targets with the ragdolls. It became something of an addiction to regular players, so unsurprisingly when the sequel was announced a small cheer of approval could be heard from the secret room behind the bookshelf.

Each level presents you with a cannon from which to fire your dolls and a target to hit. Between the two lies a contraption or obstacle, often of rather ingenious design. Sometimes you’re given nothing more than a stack of boxes to navigate, while other levels require you to set complex pieces of machinery in motion before finally firing the ragdoll which automatically gets carried to the target. The variety is almost staggering.

Take a peek under the surface, and the game transforms into something really quite deep. It’s all thanks to the inclusion of unlimited ragdolls per level. What some may see as an easy solution to making the game appeal to less-skilled players, others see as an opportunity. It works more or less like a reverse scoreboard. In most games the goal is to reach as high a score as possible, but here the objective is to conserve dolls and finish each room with the lowest number you can manage. It’s much, much harder than it sounds, and to see your name in the leaderboards will require an admirable degree of dedication. This is where the whole cult thing comes in, while other people are happy with merely finishing a level and moving on, some stay behind and experiment.

So in which ways does Ragdoll Blaster 2 (referred to as RB2 from here on) differ from the original? To be honest, not very many. The artwork has seen a significant upgrade, the sound has been revamped, there’s a massive selection of new levels (obviously) and the introductions of a few new elements within those levels. The whole game has been polished and refined, but underneath it all, the core game remains more or less the same. I consider this a smart choice, successful game developers know not to fix what isn’t broken, and Backflip Studios have followed that rule to the bitter end. All anyone ever craved was more, more, more, and that’s exactly what they got.

Likes

New graphics: Backflip Studios decided to ditch the sketchbook doodle approach with their new game, and the artwork it’s been replaced with is more than adequate. RB2 delivers a steampunk theme which is consistent throughout all of the levels and menu screens, and needless to say, it fits the game like a glove. It also presents a few new opportunities that doodle graphics couldn’t deliver, as we are now able to differentiate various elements from each other, fire, ice, grass… even outer space makes an appearance, complete with it’s signature weightlessness. It’s these things that propel the game away from it’s predecessor and make Ragdoll Blaster 2 a whole new experience.

Addictiveness: Just when I think I’m done with the game, something makes me go back for more. Occasionally it’s a forum post, hinting at a newly discovered trick for reducing a level score, sometimes an idea pops into my head for a possible alternate solution to a puzzle, but more often than not… I just want to play. There’s always something I can improve on, a technique that needs perfecting. Despite logic dictating that there must be a finite conclusion (i.e. all levels completed with one ragdoll), there’s never a shortage of experiments to be had.

Ingenuity: After five minutes with the game it should become apparent that the included levels were not designed within half an hour. They start off fairly plain and obvious for the sake of having a somewhat relaxing difficulty curve, but tutorials aside, the level setups are very, very impressive. Each and every one of them has been meticulously planned and prepared and the contraptions Backflip Studios have come up with are nothing less than inspiring. You’ll be assembling gears, powering pistons, destroying and creating obstructions, riding trains, detonating explosives and even skydiving before you’ve seen everything the game has to offer. It’s an absolute avalanche of amazing ideas, with only one, slight drawback…

Dislikes

No level editor: It seems somewhat unfair that I would list this as a dislike considering there’s not actually anything there to dislike, but in all seriousness, this game was made for level editing. The biggest flaw with RB2 is that it will inevitably end. It’ll take a long time and there’s no doubt we’re getting our moneys worth, but the inclusion of an editor, either in-app or online, would have elevated the game to new heights.

Requires patience: If you’re going for a leaderboard score, patience is not the word. Some of the highest (read: lowest) scores require use of either a glitch in the game engine, or a very particular event to occur with the physics engine. Don’t get me wrong, the game isn’t buggy at all, and that’s the beauty of it. These events are rare enough that a regular player may never see them, but a dedicated leaderboard hound will need to hunt them down. I think the largest number of times I’ve reset a level is around 100, and the longest I’ve waited for a physics event around 25 minutes. That’s 25 minutes of sitting there, doing nothing but eyeing the screen to ensure my device doesn’t go to sleep and watching my doll slowly but surely make his way down a ramp, at a pace of around one pixel per minute. Naturally, if you don’t care about scores, this entire paragraph need not apply, but if you do… prepare yourself now.

Anyone who enjoys one RB game will undoubtedly enjoy the other, as the basic idea behind both is identical. If the first game brought a smile to your face, you’ll fall instantly in love with the sequel, and if RB2 is your first venture into ragdoll humiliation, it’s well worth your time and money checking out the first game too. Either way, Ragdoll Blaster 2 serves as a classic example of how well a physics game can work on the platform, it’s addictiveness will see you through to the end, it’s charm is almost unparalleled, and perhaps above all it is unique, a rare achievement in these modern times.

Vector Tanks, released last year by Peter Hirschberg, was a remake of the 1980 Atari arcade game Battlezone and hooked me instantly. Since then, Hirschberg has teamed up with a few other individuals to form BlipTime Studios. As a studio, the team has re-released his original game as Vector Tanks Classic, and more recently published a pseudo-sequel Vector Tanks EXTREME. And if the classic version is a rain shower, then Vector Tanks EXTREME is a friggin’ hurricane, and a retro-styled frag fest of the highest caliber. All hail neon carnage, glowing debris and frivolous nuclear mayhem!

Vector Tanks is unabashedly retro. The game is entirely comprised of outlines without texture or fill. The landscape is draw in dark purple lines, power-ups in bright purple lines, environmental obstacles in red, opponents in green, and projectiles and explosions in white and green. All else is black emptiness. Graphics whores have no business here, but will be missing out on one of the most over-the-top, action-packed games in the app store.

Played in a 3D perspective, the action in Vector Tanks EXTREME is fast and furious. In all honestly, you don’t stand much of a chance and you’re not likely to last long. The point of the game is simply to survive for as long as possible, taking down as many opponents as you can in the meantime and thereby increasing your score. Destroyed tanks will drop power-ups that you collect by driving over them, including a shield recharge, rapid fire, rail gun, homing missiles and nuclear bomb. These power-ups are essential to surviving the game, as your default cannon is slow on the fly and slower to reload. Jeeps, helicopters and three types of tanks will assail you from all directions as you play, and land mines will rip you apart if you’re not careful. Luckily, it’s every tank for itself and the enemies will fire on each other as well as on you.

Vector Tanks’ unique control scheme may take some getting used to, but is ultimately very effective. Using thumbs on each side of the screen, slide both thumbs up to move forward, and one thumb up or down on either side to turn. Tapping the center of the screen will fire your current weapon. Weapons are cumulative as you pick them up, but your most powerful weapon will always be equipped; when ammunition is depleted, your next most powerful weapon will become active.

Likes:

Intensity: Intense, white-knuckle action is what Vector Tanks EXTREME is all about, and it delivers like no other game in the app store. I’ve praised games before for their nonstop action, but VTX takes nonstop action to a whole new level. It’s a game that really gets you worked up and your adrenaline pumping. Grandmaster Flash ought to write a song about it called “Green Lines”, being as Vector Tanks EXTREME has so much in common with cocaine. And yes, that’s an old-school reference for an old-school game; look it up, kiddies.

Double-Whammy Retro-Ferocity: Retro graphical stylings are the first whammy. Retro difficulty is the second whammy. Not only does VTX look old-school, but it will whup you old-school too. I warned you before the game would kill you quick, but here’s the tricky thang: it will keep you coming back for more.

Audio: One thing that’s not retro is the audio. Instead of the beeps and blips of old-timey arcade games, you will instead be immersed in the purr of your tank’s engine, the concussive bursts of explosions and the endless rattle and boom of large arms fire. Optionally, players can enable voice tracks by Jon St. John, well-known for his role as Duke Nukem, or Jeff Straub. Headphones gamers will also benefit from positional audio. There’s no music in the game, but the sound effects do a pretty good job of filling the silence. If one must have music, I recommend playing old-school rap on the stereo while you play; a game this old-school deserves no less.

Selectable Difficulty and Modes: Depending on how quickly you’d like to be destroyed, Combat mode allows you to choose from difficulty levels including Novice, Medium, Expert and iNsAnE! Surviving higher difficulty levels long enough will net you massive piles of bonus points. There’s also a Rage mode that grants you unlimited lives and firepower to wreak as much destruction as possible within two minutes. Of course, so much of Rage most is spent dead that it’s almost not fun. Almost. And, just in case you are lacking in Hardcore and overflowing with Weak Sauce, there’s a practice mode in which enemy tanks don’t shoot back.

Dislikes:

No Multiplayer: A game like this desperately needs multiplayer. It screams for it. And not stupid four-player matches like Eliminate, but 8-16 players would be awesome.

Vector Tanks EXTREME is not for the faint of heart. But if action is your drug, then VTX is like crack. If you are foolish enough to be put off by the game’s retro graphics, then you deserve to be missing one of the best action experiences on the app store; frankly, I count the retro-stylings as one of the game’s assets. But I’m old-school and hardcore like that. I grew up playing games that demanded perfection, that didn’t hold your hand through to the end. Vector Tanks EXTREME is a welcome throwback to times when games were brutal and fun. And if that’s too intense a prospect for you, there’s always Vector Tanks Classic, a watered down version of the same great gameplay. But having whet my teeth on the EXTREME, I can’t go back. Oh yes, I’m extreme. It’s gallons of Mountain Dew and hours of tank battles for me.

I must admit, Transformers toys were pretty awesome. When I first saw the commercials for them, the song was so catchy that I found myself singing/yelling it right to my brothers’ faces. But, of course, I never found myself going to Toys R’ Us and purchasing the plastic machine, as it was a waste of money for a person of my age.

I never admitted the coolness of these action figures though, and it never was until the movie was announced that people started to think of Transformers as cool. And like almost all the guys out there, Transformers was cool for one reason and one reason only: Megan Fox.

But enough with my little spiel, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Turn-based strategy is a popular genre on the iPhone, Transformers G1: The Awakening fits right in. Need I say more?

Likes

Strategy: Transformers G1 cleverly implements the Autobots’ ability to transform into vehicles through distance, having you to think strategically on when to transform or not. This turn-based strategy game has enough strategy to keep you playing the game, and while it isn’t especially deep, it’s perfect for the most simple sorts of people and the most complex.

Gameplay Balancing: The story slowly progresses, so perfectly in fact, that it keeps you playing the game. Gameplay balancing has been perfectly matched to feature one of the most balanced games I have ever played. The perfect balance lead to me playing for over two hours straight without realizing the passing time. It definitely got me hooked in, and that’s when you know a game is a good game.

Battle Animations: Amidst the horrible graphics, the battle scenes are pretty amazing. The cell-shaded graphics work well in such an intense environment, and I have to commend Glu for their work in this sector. The battle scenes are definitely the best I’ve seen in a turn-based strategy game so far.

Multiple game modes: Transformers G1 has multiple game modes that should keep you busy for quite a while, and although it doesn’t boast of the content found in Battle for Wesnoth, it has enough for that price tag. The game modes also provide slight variations for those times when you feel like playing something other than the main story mode.

Dislikes

The other visuals: The other visuals, besides the battle scenes, are pathetic. I don’t know if they went for a retro look or what, but the visuals don’t impress me at all. For one, the overall game is way too small. By that I mean the text is small, the robots are small, and zooming in doesn’t help at all. Playing zoomed in only makes the experience worse instead of better, leading to small robots and small text. Along with that, the pixelated look doesn’t fair well in this environment at all.

Lack of Online Multiplayer: All the other TBSs like Battle for Wesnoth and Robocalypse contain online multiplayer, so it would seem fair to point this out as a dislike. It would have been nice if they added it though, but alas, it seems like they have declined to include this feature.

Transformers G1 is a solid turn-based strategy game, but it isn’t perfect by any means. I didn’t find any issues with the gameplay itself; I just found issues with what they didn’t include. With must have TBS titles like Mecho Wars and Robocalypse including so many features, it’s hard to justify our highest award for this strategy game. But still, those in search of some noteworthy strategy games on their iPhone should include Transformers G1 in their list.

Marco Mazzoli’s Spirit is a game that truly embodies the spirit of the app store. Tightly woven, elegantly presented, thoroughly engrossing, incredibly fluid, easy to pick-up and play, difficult to put down, Spirit is a paradigm example of independent game development for the iPhone.

The concept is simple: using touch controls to direct your spirit, you must quickly encircle opponents to create a void in space. Opponents caught within the void — either because you’ve encircled them, or because they fly into the void before it closes — are whisked away into oblivion. Clearing the board advances you to the next stage, and difficulty gradually ramps up as you go, pitting you against a greater variety of foes, in greater numbers. You can net more points by linking voids, creating multiple voids on-screen at once, or by ensnaring multiple foes in a single void.

Control is pretty intuitive, though takes some getting used to. Touching anywhere on the screen and moving your finger will cause your spirit to follow a coinciding course from its current position. Whipping your spirit around the screen can easily result in unintentional collision, but there’s no better control scheme I can imagine. It just takes some practice to get the hang of moving.

Likes:

Visual Presentation: Similar in appearance to the geoDefense and Geometry Wars, Spirit is drawn in neon shapes, and the playing field is grid in space. It’s nothing we’ve not seen before, and looks pretty standard in still shots. In motion, however, the game really shines. The field warps and distorts, like ripples disturbing the surface of a pond, when enemies come into existence, when your spirit moves at high speeds, or when one of your voids begins to tear at the fabric of space. The overall effect is that of a game played on water, rather than in space and it is quite beautiful to behold. The colors are vibrant and attractive, enemies are easy to discern from the playing field and there are several nice, little touches adding visual flare: the explosion and explosive distortions across the field when you die, the streaking of light as it’s consumed by void or when stages advance, the way the grid flashes into existence at the start of a stage, and the constant and random shifting of colors as the game progresses.

Audio: The sound effects and music create less of a soundtrack and more of a soundscape, adding to the fluidity and zen-like nature of the game. If the visuals and play are the game’s body, then the audio is its breath.

Gameplay: Spirit plays out through stages of progressing difficulty, though advancing feels more like evolution than stage progression. The core component of gameplay is essentially trailing circles around your opponents, reconnecting with your own wake before it dissipates to complete the circle. Enclosing enemies thus draws them into the void. Throughout the game, the concept remains unchanged, but ramps up in difficulty such that it never becomes boring. There’s a certain amount of unpredictability in the evolution of stages; while difficulty seems to increase on a steady curve, the opponents you face in each stage will change on each play, and so you never know quite what to expect as you move from one stage to the next. This goes a long way in keeping the game interesting to replay.

Extra Lives: Extra lives occasionally become available as you play, but are handled in a unique way that really ties them into gameplay and adds to the strategy of the game. They show up randomly during levels, tethered by a chord to an enemy. To liberate the extra life, you have to draw the enemy into a void. The trick, however, lies in doing so without the extra life also being consumed. By cutting between the enemy and the tethered 1-UP with a void, you can severe the connection, freeing the 1-UP for collect. If you’re not careful, however, the 1-UP will also be consumed by the void and lost to you. It makes them challenging to collect, especially in crowded stages; creating such a precise void puts you dangerously close to collision. But when you do manage to rescue one of them, you will really have accomplished something. There’s risk in the rescue, but great satisfaction to be had as reward.

Enemies: There’s a great deal more variety in the opponents you will face than you might expect from a game like this. Some enemies meander aimlessly through the field and some will pursue you relentlessly. Others will avoid you, making capture difficult. Then there are stationary cannons which can temporarily wall you into a small space with lasers, the snakes, which can only be defeated by catching their heads in a void, and ships which patrol in a fixed path. Even amongst those enemies which move seemingly at random, movement and behavioral characteristics vary.

No Loading: Spirit contains no loading screens, contributing greatly to the feeling of fluidity in the game. Menus are easy to navigate, fast, responsive and lead you directly into play without any breaks. If you want to break off play and restart your game, you can do so almost as quickly as you can tap the screen.

Bonus Stages: Bonus stages come at set intervals during play, providing a welcome repose from the main game and a chance to really wrack up points. You cannot die in bonus stages. Instead, the screen becomes flooded with yellow and red opponents. Consuming yellows in your void increases your score, while consuming red decreases it. The object is therefore to collect at many yellow opponents as possible within a limited time, while trying not to consume the red.

Dislikes:

One Mode: There’s only one gameplay mode in Spirit, and it would be great to see a few more such as a survival mode, time trial mode, and a mode that extends the ideas already presented in the main game as bonus stages.

Being of solid concept and immaculate presentation, Spirit is an easy recommendation. The coming 1.1 update promises Open Feint integration, which will allow players to compete globally for highscores. My high is currently a hard won 232,840. Honestly, I can’t think of any reason not to buy this one. Still shots do the game no justice at all; it’s beautiful and loads of good.

Gameloft seems to be the only contender so far in the App Store’s race in proving itself as capable of first-person shooters; no other developer has truly released first-person shooters with this high of a production value. But of course, that just means more money for Gameloft right?

Their first, true first-person shooter, Modern Combat Sandstorm, received a Must Have award from us for being one of the best shooters we’ve ever played on the iPhone. Of course, with the announcement of BIA 2, we had some high expectations for Gameloft’s release. But alas, these expectations were never reached, as it almost feels as if Gameloft took a step back in time, when controls were a bit janky and the AI was all pre-scripted.

While BIA 2 was a lot more action-packed than both Modern Combat and NOVA, there were some major flaws that puts this shooter behind the rest.

Likes

Graphics: They’ve really updated the graphics from the first Brothers in Arms to the second. Along with the transition from third-person to first-person shooter, the graphics and animations have been greatly improved, almost to the point where you can’t believe it. Gameloft always has a knack for graphics on the iPhone, and they definitely showed it here with graphics that may just be better than NOVA.

Action: If you like non-stop action from one minute to the next, this is one game that definitely fits that category. Enemies come in the swarms, and you’re left to be shooting from one person to the other. Grenades are flying everywhere; this is war. Brothers in Arms 2 is the most action-packed shooter to date on the iPhone, and for those looking for a game with no breaks, Brothers in Arms 2 is just perfect.

Online: I expected this to be smooth, and they delivered. I haven’t had much online connectivity problems, and it’s just like any other Gameloft first-person shooter.

Dislikes

AI: AI is poor in this game; so poor in fact, that it’s pre-scripted. Their movements, their shots, everything is pre-scripted. I would have liked a more… smarter AI that had a mind somewhat of its own, attacking and running around to find cover. Instead, you find some enemies out wide in the open shooting at you as if they want to die. The AI in NOVA was adequate, and while not impressive, it was acceptable. The AI in Brothers in Arms 2? Not acceptable.

Controls: This is an area that Gameloft has hit right on the dot for the past 5 or so games, but for some reason, they decided to be lethargic and swim in their pool of money. I found the controls to be very insensitive to my turning and my touch, leading to slow turnarounds when the enemy was to my right or to my left. They are acceptable though, just not as good as their other games.

Brothers in Arms 2 is a step back from NOVA, that’s basically all I have to say. Gameloft did a wonderful job with NOVA, including the online multiplayer and controls, but they seemed to really cut down on their cash output for this title. It’s still a solid first-person shooter packed with action; I just had some problems with the AI and controls. While Gameloft isn’t known for updating their games, it would be nice for them to play around with some better controls.

Brothers in Arms 2 was developed by Gameloft, and I played through version 1.0.9 on my iPhone 3GS. The price is $7.99.
