Will Dr. EVIL knock on Nikon’s door? (Nikon EVIL camera recap)

No, no that Dr. Evil. I am talking about EVIL camera (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens). There has been a lot of talk lately on that topic. Other companies are not shy of releasing EVIL products left and right, the latest one being the Ricoh GXR, which has a cartridge system that packs the lens and the sensor into one interchangeable piece. After RED, this is as close as you can get to a modular camera (btw few months ago there were rumors about a Nikon modular camera). Olympus E-P2, Panasonic GF-1 and Samsung NX-10 (not yet released) seem to be the most popular EVIL models at that time. The latest rumors are that Sony and Fuji are expected to be next to release EVIL cameras. Canon is quiet. Some rumors pointed to a Canon micro format camera, but nothing substantial so far. And the we have Nikon...

All of the Nikon EVIL camera information so far has been based on patents filed by Nikon Corporation. Filed patents don't mean much - they may or may not materialize and a patent may not even be granted for a some applications. Many companies file patents just to protect something they may use years from now or not use at all. It is important to note that all of the EVIL related patents has been filed by Nikon in the past few months. The first interesting thought is that the long rumored MX product line could actually mean MicroX, even though some of the previously rumored MX resolutions are too big for an EVIL camera. I will try to recap all the information we have so far on the rumored Nikon EVIL camera: Lenses (to convert to full frame equivalent, multiple the focal length by x2.5):

All of the above lenses have an image diameter of 17 mm. Currently Nikon doesn’t have a camera with 17mm sensor (diagonal) which is smaller than 4/3rd format (21.6 mm). In some of the patents the lenses are described as “employable as an interchangeable lens system”. If Sony comes with an EVIL system next week, it will be interesting to see the sensor size. If the diagonal is 17mm, we will have a BINGO since this is where Nikon will get their sensor from (speculation). Body:

The unanswered question (for now): is Nikon filing all those patents to make sure that if needed they can jump in the EVIL world in the future or they have solid plans to release an EVIL camera in the next few months?

All of the Nikon EVIL camera information so far has been based on patents filed by Nikon Corporation. Filed patents don’t mean much – they may or may not materialize and a patent may not even be granted for a some applications. Nikon patents for this week – Nikon EVIL camera again

In this post I will use the patent interpretations from a NR reader who has a much better “patents reading abilities” than me:

We have another 32 mm f/1.2 lens (for the 17 mm format sensor) which will make a 80 mm equivalent (patent# 20090273851):

The same above patent refers to “employable as an interchangeable lens system”.

Patent 20090273841 is for diffractive optics, similar to Canon’s Diffractive Optics lens technology. Interestingly 20090273851 also refers to potential diffractive optics.

One thing that may be of interest is the Oct. 15th patent 20090256952 – this sounds mundane, focus detection but it’s about phase detection auto focus in the image itself, I don’t think anyone has this. The kicker is this is one of 2 dozen patents on this technology going back to early 2007 and all of them reference use in an EVIL camera:

The bottom line: Nikon has been after an EVIL camera since 2006 and they’re looking for autofocus performance in this system.

Nikon D700 replacement timeframe

This one is coming from nikonistas.com (Google translation) – this is something like a Q&A session with Carlos Ormazabal, Nikon Product Manager for Spain, Andorra and Portugal (updated translation):

So, if you’re willing to wait for the baby D3S, count 6 to 8 months.”

If I am understanding this correctly: 6-8 months before the D700 replacement is introduced.

Ellis Vener made a comment on photo.net:

“More fast wide angle prime lenses are definitely in the pipeline, but I can’t say more than that.” (from Oct 29, 2009, 09:53 am).

If you read his first comment on this thread, Mr. Vener had the opportunity to shoot with the Nikon D3s almost right after it was released, so I would assume that he does have some insider information.

Interesting comment on dpreview: in 2010 we should get:

- D500 (DX)
- D800 (not D700x) with 18MP (not 24MP)
- A new wide angle prime lens
- A new mid range zoom lens with VR
- A super tele zoom lens with VR (all lenses expected by February, 2010 – for details see older post)

This is pretty much nothing new (it seems that we now have a rumor consensus for all those lenses), except the 18MP sensor. Two weeks ago I received a tip that Nikon has been actively working on a 16MP full frame sensor – maybe they redesigned the 16MP chip and turned in into a 18MP?

I got a report from the UK that people who pre-ordered the 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII were asked to make a payment. Shipments should be starting soon (officially scheduled for the end of November).

Zeiss will be releasing some new ZF lenses: “around a 180, 135 focal length (the 180 will probably be macro)” – this is coming from a guy with a lens tattoo on his forearm, it must be true!

Again: Nikkor AF-S 35mm f/1.4 coming soon (source). See also this patent (full pdf available here).

f = 35.863, FNO = 1.45 and the lens diagram:

Nikon rebates (Part 2)

Ok, lets start with Germany: 10% off accessories when you buy a Nikon DSLR (full pdf available here).

Nikon UK have announced to dealers that there will be rebates of £50 on D5000 and £30 on D3000 from 5 Nov to 10 Jan, 2009 (Jessops has some Nikon D90 bundle deals and £10 off Nikon D5000 lens kit on their website, but I don’t think they are part of Nikon’s rebates program).

In the US rebates are announced just a short time in advance. For example few days ago, US Nikon dealers received their rebates schedule for Nov 1 through Nov 21 (I am still working on getting the full details on this rebate schedule). The rebates are mainly for Coolpix cameras and entry level DLSRs (D3000/D5000). I was told not to hold my breath for rebates on PRO level DSLR or lenses.

Right now Ritz Online has a $50 “Nikon instant saving” on the D3000 and $20 on some Coolpix models on their front page.

Adorama has $30 instant rebates on the Nikon D5000 and $50 for D5000 lens kit. Nikon D3000 with 2 lens kit has a $100 instant rebate.

Ever heard of Nikon C mount or Nikon DS digital cameras? Yes, it does exists: Nikon just announced a SMZ-745T trinocular stereo microscope that comes equipped with a built-in 0.55x c-mount adapter permitting direct mounting of Nikon DS series digital cameras. The cameras looks like that:

Nikon D90 is rated #1 by Consumer Report (December, 2009 issue), followed by Olympus E30 and Canon EOS Rebel T1i.
Nikon’s net loss on camera unit smaller than previously projected
The name of the Metris (the company Nikon acquired recently) will change to Nikon Metrology NV (source). Metrology=the science of measurement.

Nikon patents for this week

Nikon patent applications published (made available to the public) this week:

Lens system: if I am not mistaken this patent appears to be for a zoom lens with 7-24mm focal length, maybe for a point and shoot camera:

Electronic device (built-in GPS): the figure shows a point and shoot camera that besides geotagging also displays a map on the screen.

Distortion correcting method, distortion correcting device: this patent seems to be for in-camera distortion correction.

Illumination device for photography and photographic device – my understanding is that this patent is for removing shadows of moving objects when shooting with a flash.
Mobile phone equipped with a camera – not sure why this was filed, a cell phone with a rotating camera/screen already exists, right?

Nikon signed a multi-year license agreement for access to WiLAN

Nikon is probably planing to push built-in Wi-Fi to new camera models – they just signed a multi-year license agreement with WiLAN which will provide Nikon with access to WiLAN technology for use in Wi-Fi-enabled products. Several Nikon Coolpix models already have built-in Wi-Fi (for example the Coolpix S50c). It is interesting to see if Nikon will add Wi-Fi to their DSLR models.

New iPhone app from Nikon

Update: it seems that this iPhone app is for the US market only.

Nikon somehow forgot to officially announce this new iPhone app (available in the app store since October 19th, 2009). I read about it on the Photographyblog and since the rumor mill is slow after the D3s announcement, I decided to post this online. This is Nikon’s second iPhone app (the first one was My PictureTown). The app is free and Nikon claims that will constantly update the content, which is a great idea. You can get more details on Nikon USA website.

I think this is suppose to be the official press release (taken from Nikon USA website):

I have posted a Nikon tattoo in the past. It seems that this is now becoming a trend: another Nikon D3x tattoo and a 85mm 1.8f lens tattoo. Update: another FX tattoo.
PDN PhotoPlus Expo is over. As aways, Nikon’s booth was packed. Pretty much every lens from their catalog was available and visitors could try them out. They also had several free seminars and some models (mainly for the consumer DSLRs). I did not get any good and reliable information on future products.

I will stick with my initial report on the next set of Nikon lenses (done before the D3s announcement):

Nikon AF-S 24mm f/1.4 lens: I expect this lens to be announced during the first quarter of 2010. Did not receive a lot of communication on that lens.

Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4 lens: based on a previously filed patent I think this lens should be coming soon – I say latest 9 months from now and as soon as December, 2009 unless Nikon filed that patent to throw us off. I had very strong indications that the Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR lens would be released (see this post), but I would never think that Nikon will release a DX lens with the Nikon D3s (actually my exact comment two week ago was “this is still a possibility”).

Nikon AF-S 100-500mm f/4-5.6 IF-ED VR lens: this lens should be released first or second quarter of 2010.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR: this rumor came from a Japanese forum. I have no other info on this lens.

We may have another Nikon announcement before this year is over.

The rumor is also that Cliff Mautner (click here for his 70-200mm f2.8G ED VRII review) is testing six more new Nikon lenses (source). This is what he wrote on his blog:

“The big box of lenses I just received will be heading back to Japan when I’m finished the campaign shoots, unless I accidentally forget to enclose the new 70-200 VRII with the package (just kidding Soichi-san)!!”

I don’t think he is working on a Nikon campaign for old products, so we will have some new glass coming soon.

Rumor: Nikon D800 instead of D700s/x

PhotographyBay received a tip that Nikon will not be updating the D700, but instead will release a completely new model – Nikon D800 with the following specs:

Video mode 1080p video recording (full HD)
High resolution 24.5 MP
High frame rate: 7 fps without battery grip (similar to D300s)
51-area Nikon Multi-CAM 3500FX (same technology as D3X)
Expected to be released before the end of the year

At that point I do not have any reliable info on that rumor. All sources point that D700 will not be updated anytime soon. Maybe this really means a new D800 that could coexists with the D700.

Nikon View NX 1.5.0:

Support for the D3S has been added.
Support for 64-bit versions of Windows Vista has been added. However, the software operates as with 32-bit systems.
Support for Mac OS X version 10.5.8 has been added.
Support for a function that allows position information taken from a GPS log to be written to image GPS tags has been added.
Various GPS information from a GPS log saved by a commercial GPS unit (receiver) or cellular telephone with GPS support can be added all at once to images.
The following GPS log formats are supported.
- NMEA-format files (.nmea, .nma, .log file extensions)
- GPX-format files (.gpx file extension)

Support for Epson E-Photo has been added. E-Photo is a printing utility bundled with Seiko Epson Corporation’s inkjet printer drivers.
An issue that sometimes resulted in decreased resolution, depending upon the pixel count entered, of image copies created using the “Convert Files” function has been resolved.
When lateral color aberration compensation was applied to RAW images then edited and saved using ViewNX Ver. 1.1.1 or Ver. 1.2.0, lateral color aberration compensation was sometimes not applied. This issue has been resolved.
